Restorative Discipline: Part 2 – NOT 6-7 but 5-7! Stacy Redding Stacy Coalson Redding Music Specialist, M Ed, Administration Texas Beta Omicron
Last issue introduced Restorative Disciple. Restorative Discipline is an approach to conflict resolution in discipline matters with the focus on repairing harm and restoring relationships. A big paradigm shift happens from punishment to repair and restoration.
The following four elements must be prevalent in a high-functioning learning classroom: Structured conversations, Accountability, Empathy, Classroom climate, and Classroom culture. Here are 7 mindsets to build the foundation of the classroom for the 5 R’s to take place.
The 5 R’s of Restorative Discipline How to shift mindset to the 5 R’s. Restorative Disciple brings into focus these components to a thriving student and classroom. Beverly Title developed this framework that describes and develops true learning and growth. Relationships Respect Responsibility Repair Reintegration Each of these key components build/rebuild the classroom relationships and community. Trust is rebuilt as focus is put back on accountability, mutual understanding, connection, making things right, and welcoming individuals back. Michigan State University and the Minnesota Department of
Education demonstrates the “how” to incorporate through timely, engaging questions: What happened? (getting the story, not just facts and judgment) What were you thinking and feeling at the time? (reflection on inner state) Who has been affected by what happened, and in what way? (builds understanding of impact) What do you think needs to happen to make things right? (accountability and repair) What do you need to move forward? (need for healing and resolution) For those harmed or in the classroom, these two additional questions might be helpful. What has been the hardest thing for you? What impact has this incident had on you and others? Partnership for Los Angeles Schools suggests several activities with the use of the 5 R’s and Questions. These include, but are not limited to, individual conferencing and dialogue, victim-offender conferencing, active listening, motivational interviewing, conflict circles, circles of support, and restorative circles. Class climate of the moment and the culture that has been built will provide direction for which activities will best serve the student, situation, and purpose. Research and information are out there to help you! Keep asking questions! You will make decisions that later you question why you went that way.Education is a practice not a perfect skill but thinking about how you and your students facilitate the classroom will hopefully eliminate power struggles, problems, and all that will come your way. The final trilogy of Restorative Discipline next month will be more hands-on to facilitate your development of your restorative discipline concept for your classroom. Don’t be overwhelmed or frightened of this unknown…you got this! It is you plus your students equals relationships!

First, create a classroom community with shared values. (social contract, relationship contract, etc.) Make classroom inclusion and participation mandatory, setting the expectation that models, teaches, and reinforces classroom values.
