School has begun...All Gas, No Brakes! Now what???!!!

Here is a BOY (Beginning of Year) checklist of things I have in place the first few weeks of school! Important contacts! Make sure you have your Principal and/or Assistant Principal information such as phone, etc as well as dept head and/or team lead, custodian! (your best friend!)

I complete all the beginning of school paperwork as soon as I get it so it does slip under the radar.These things include insurance and benefits items (now usually online), taxes (w-4 , withholding, etc), campus personnel sheet, room set up check-sheet, compliance training, and other items your campus or district may require.

Is there a digital version where you are supposed to find pertinent information? My district has a central information spot, which is Classlink, for all of my applications. Everything from absences, grades, curriculum, content resources, and more are located in one digital spot.

Get organized early and often. Stay calendar-ready…a little frequently trumps a lot of catch-up. Include things as faculty meetings, department meetings, team meetings, test dates, grades due and submission procedures, BTS night, PTA/PTO, lesson plans due dates, Academic night, professional learning/development, and more. Here is a recap from my March article.

Timely Things in a Timely Manner I use a big desk calendar so I can see everything immediately.

I use colored gel pens to organize what I place on the calendar.

Important items in red. (Lesson plans, grades, T-TESS) Campus events in school color, mine is orange.

Campus meetings in green.

District items in blue. (PD, health, contract, tax, etc) Personal items in purple. (fav color) The unspoken rules of how things get done. First, make the office manager one of your best new friends! Are there copier procedures (limit? Paper etc)? Do I clock in and/or clock out? How do I report an absence? Required field trips? Buses? (Yes, this information will be in the faculty handbook, but a friend in the office is a friend indeed! And include the lead custodian on your list of best new friends!

Remember with everyone on campus…administration, faculty, staff, and students…it begins and ends with relationships. Take the time to get to know them…look them in the eye…and slow down a minute and focus on who is in front of you! Learn and play name games, SEL activities

and more throughout the year. And yes, these games can have academic twists on them. In September, I will include links to find various links to help you throughout the year. Remember PLAY is an important part of learning!

And lastly, I use a Big Binder to set up for my Evaluations/Summative conferences. I look at the rubrics of the evaluation rating system and section my binder with things all throughout the year as it happens.

This way, I am more prepared for my EOY (End of Year) Summative conference, which is a living, breathing document that my appraiser and I discuss walk-thrus, spot observations, evaluations, and more. My binder helps provide documentation to verify each rating on the rubrics. Most are scrambling at the end of the year, pulling from everywhere, trying to find things---but taking this time throughout the year makes a stressful end-of-year activity a true picture of the work that has been accomplished because of YOU! The year will go faster than you think! Take time to enjoy the moments of the day. Take time to enjoy the students you have. Take time to enjoy being a wonderful part of what makes our community…an educator!

2025 International Convention Ball State University, Indiana State University, and University of Arizona club members attended the International Convention in Austin, Texas this summer! The Alpha Delta Kappa Foundation provided $1000 to each club to send attendees. Having some FOMO? No worries, Summer of 2026 Alpha Delta Kappa will be hosting 3 Regional Conferences!

These will be in Las Vegas, Nashville, and New Orleans. Be on the lookout for applying for funding for your club to attend!
