2022 Annual Report

Our urgent challenge. Our strong commitment.

Our urgent commitment.

It is an honor to lead ALP because it lifts lives and changes futures. That wonderful truth brings with it a reading solution for the aspiring readers we serve. ALP students and their hope is what inspires me in leading this organization. What compels me towards urgency are the challenging truths about our work.

I want you to know exactly why you, and we, must commit to helping ALP meet this crisis.

I wish that all 3rd grade students in our schools could read at grade level. But right now, that is far from reality.

I wish that the thousands of children needing supplemental instruction had the same opportunities and access to education.

But today, these kids are further behind than ever before. And, these kids are the ones already facing huge challenges.

I want you to know exactly who ALP lifts up with the power of reading. I want you to know exactly how ALP helps aspiring readers.

I wish that fewer, not more, principals and teachers in our schools were desperately asking for help for their students. But this year, there are more educators urgently asking for ALP in their schools.

I wish we weren’t facing a reading crisis in our community. But the truth is, we are in exactly that crisis.

What resources, time and energy will we commit to meeting this crisis? My commitment as ALP’s leader is to make sure you respond to this question knowing three things clearly. Why. Who. How.

This annual report is an invitation to you. Join us in a commitment that can change students’ lives forever with ALP.

Steve

Our community is in a crisis.

Meet Sam.

Sam was painfully aware and self-conscious about his inability to read. “It’s too hard,” Sam would say to me, “I’m not good at it.”

During our time, he learned his letters and sounds. While he still struggled with blending words, I noticed he was self-correcting and one day exclaimed, “I’m getting good at this!”

Later in the year, I was reading to Sam when he stopped me and demanded that he read, saying “I want to read my book.”

Committed to growth.

20,000 students in grades K–3 in CMS have been identified in needing supplemental literacy instruction. The reach of ALP must intervene in the face of the stark reality. We as a community are in a literacy crisis. ALP is committed to ensure that all students across Mecklenburg County have access to our critical reading resources.
