Feliz Navidad! Welcome to our Sparkle & Shine issue. In our Exclusive Cover Feature on page 16 we talk to Edward Childs and Sylvia Moses from renowned real estate company, Smith Gore about their rebrand to Christie’s International Real Estate BVI and we tour their exclusive listing, Red Rock Villa on Virgin Gorda. In the lead-up to Christmas each year, Roy and I inevitably find ourselves running around town - grabbing the last stocking fillers and gathering all the final touches for the dinner table. Last year, while watching the boys play on the beach at Trellis Bay (as we so often do!), we ran into friends whose children are a similar age. “How’s all of your Christmas Day plans coming along?” I asked. “Easy!” they responded. “It’s just us this year, so we will open presents in the morning with smoothies for the kids and a bottle of bubbles for us, then head to one of the resorts for dinner” they continued. This time around, I’m thinking about their relaxed approach and I remind myself to tone-down the running around, just a little. There are all sorts of festive styles and they all have their charms. At VIPY, our festive pages are anything but relaxed. In our usual style, we cram as much content into our Sparkle and Shine issue as possible. miths Gore is no ordinary real estate agency. For more than 50 years, they have been providing custom advice to clientele locally and abroad who want to own their piece of the BVI’s unique brand of paradise - helping people make smart property decisions with the help of their deep understanding and abiding love of the islands. And this October, they entered a whole new chapter when they rebranded the residential sales and short-term villa rentals department as Christie’s International Real Estate British Virgin Islands (CIRE I British Virgin Islands), expanding their reach on the world stage, resulting in a stronger team and a perfect partner for clients looking to invest in the BVI. Sylvia Moses, business development manager for Smiths Gore, said one of
the reasons behind the change was the chance for a greater presence on the international stage. “While the name Smiths Gore is well known in the UK, US investors and those seeking to buy property in the BVI are not familiar with our name,” she said. “Although Smiths Gore had been an affiliate of Christie’s for many years, we felt the need to have a closer integration with Christie’s International Real Estate as a brand name which is recognised globally. This move to rebrand was made possible when CIRE I Caribbean was established earlier this year to promote the region and networking between the Caribbean affiliates.” She pointed out Christie’s International Real Estate is a LEFT CIRE BVI’s Road Town office, Britannic Hall on Main Street.

Weather the storms Smiths Gore was founded by Derek Dunlop in 1965 and although it initially shared a brand identity with a UK firm of chartered surveyors, the BVI office specialised in project management for early resorts and commercial developments. Over the years, Smiths Gore’s skillset enabled buildings to be developed in remote locations like Necker Island, Biras Creek, Peter Island, Pasea Trading Estate and Bitter End Yacht Club - all legendary properties that now have been attached to the company’s name for over half a century. And in 2017 the company expertly weathered the storms and rebuilt its iconic Britannic Hall office, which now stands on Main Street once again as a welcoming beacon to Road Town. “We envision a renewed Smiths Gore handling our professional work, commercial sales and long-term residential rentals and a vibrant innovative residential agency with CIRE I British Virgin Islands,” said Sylvia, noting that times are changing and even an agency with a rich history has to change too. ‘’We have taken on board the valuable insights of Generation Z and ensured that the new branding direction aligns more closely with their preference.”

This is the peaceful island getaway that I’d been dreaming of. The Main House Pavilion is the heart of the property and home to the bright and airy Great Room featuring sumptuous area rugs, dark wood carvings and bookshelves lined with exciting reads. The Great Room is the ideal hosting space for big groups, the communal area for the whole family to gather with plush daybeds and an oversized coffee table. Glass and wood-panelled concertina doors run along the front of the Great Room and open onto the terrace. They are set in rich, dark mahogany and fitted with warm-toned brass door hardware. Ceiling fans spin overhead in the vaulted wooden ceiling and the open front of the room capitalises on the cooling sea breezes. There is a state-of-the-art Bose entertainment system and a projector and screen for family movie night. The shaded terrace with a wet bar is just outside. The warm natural tones of the wood, the tile and the lighting provide a golden glow that deepens as the sun sets and the sky turns from gold to blush to pink. Consider moving to the observation deck if you fancy somewhere more tranquil for your yoga session. It is ideal for a bit of vinyasa flow while enjoying the sea views and the salttinged breeze. At one end of the pool is the Master Bedroom Pavilion offering an airconditioned king bed primary suite with a private covered veranda, walk-in closet, elegantly carved fourposter bed, a beautiful bathroom with
double sinks, L’Occitane toiletries and an exotic outdoor shower. The shower features a decorative copper leaf sculpture with delicate blue-green verdigris from Aragorn Studio. At the other end of the pool is the third pavilion, named Sugar Mill, sympathetically built around the vast boulders for which Virgin Gorda is known. All the pavilions at Sol y Sombra have been designed to complement and accentuate the environment around them and include exposed stone walls and charming natural features with the boulders coming into some of the rooms. Sugar Mill pavilion offers a ground floor air-conditioned twin bedroom, ensuite bathroom and a terrace. Above it, an air-conditioned queen-bed suite is accessed via a staircase curving around the mammoth boulder. This upstairs suite opens out to a deck and pergola, outfitted with hammocks and loungers, offering privacy and
a breathtaking vantage point with 180-degree sea views across the Sir Francis Drake Channel to the neighbouring islands and cays dotted along the horizon. Both suites also have outdoor showers. Outside, between the Main House Pavilion and the beach, the pool terrace has warm golden travertine tiles surrounding the 45foot oceanfront infinity pool. hinking of purchasing a diamond ring for a special someone this Christmas? Or, perhaps even ‘popping the question’. Sanjay Surtani from House of Luxury has some excellent tips, not to mention a gorgeous selection to choose from. “The decision to buy a diamond is an important one”, says Sanjay, a third generation jewellery business owner, who learned about and developed a passion for gemstones while studying at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the world’s foremost authority on diamonds. “We try to take the pressure out of that process”, he continues.

So we asked Sanjay for his top tips on how to buy a diamond ring. What should you look for when buying a diamond? Doing a little bit of homework about diamonds will help you understand what influences its value, commonly known as The 4C’s – Carat, Cut, Colour and Clarity. This will then help you decide the compromises you may be willing to make to fit your price range. It’s also useful to know his or her taste in jewellery, simple or bold, classic or modern? What colour gold do they like and what shape of diamond do they have a preference for? Check their jewellery box or if you’re still not sure, talk to a close friend that can also

Again, there is no pressure with size, because we can
always resize the ring once it has been gifted, but if you want to get as close as possible, ideally we would want to size a ring that your loved one wears regularly on either their left or right ring finger. Pavlova with Cream and Berries (FOR 8 - 10 SERVINGS)
Preparation time: 25 min Cooking time: 55 min Resting time: 1 h Total time: 2 h 20 min Difficulty: easy INGREDIENTS: • 4 large eggs; whites only, room temperature • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar • 1 1/4 cup sugar; divided • 1 tablespoon cornstarch • 1 teaspoon lemon juice • 1 1/4 cups heavy whipping cream • 1 cup fresh raspberries • 1 cup fresh strawberries; sliced • 1 cup fresh blueberries • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 300°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Place the egg whites in a large bowl. Add the cream of tartar and

beat on medium speed until soft peaks form. Gradually add in 1 cup of sugar and continue beating until stiff glossy peaks form. Fold in the cornstarch and lemon juice. 3. Spoon the meringue onto prepared pan; with the back of a spoon, shape into a 10-in. circle, forming a shallow well in the center. Bake until meringue is set and dry, 45-55 minutes. Turn off oven and leave the meringue inside, without opening the oven door for 1 hour. Remove from oven and let cool completely on the baking sheet. 4. Once the meringue is cool, add the heavy cream to a large mixing bowl. Beat the cream until it begins to thicken. Add the remaining sugar and beat until soft peaks form. 5. Transfer the meringue to a serving plate. Spoon the whipped cream over the top, forming a slight well in the center. Top with the fresh berries and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
