Message from the Premier of the Virgin Islands Honourable Andrew A. Fahie Welcome, one and all, As Premier of these beautiful islands, we are delighted to welcome you with BVILOVE to our home, the British Virgin Islands. Our small cluster of islands with secluded anchorages, splendid beaches, world-class marine industry, and favourable trade winds, has combined to earn us the reputation of “Sailing Capital of the World.” After a brief hiatus to preserve the health and safety of all residents and guests, our magnificent archipelago has re-opened and re-emerged to showcase even more stunning pristine land and seascapes. But more significantly, as a people emerging from recent adversity, we have shown resilience and returned to our core values, which we call BVILOVE. BVILOVE is a mantra that unites not only the people of the Territory, but resonates through all the sectors of the economy and the various aspects of our lives. We love our British Virgin Islands, and we invite you to love this Territory too. In fact, we know that many of our loyal guests have had a lifetime love affair with the British Virgin Islands, and first-time guests quickly embrace us as well. I am pleased to say that we have a renewed focus on showcasing authentic experiences in the British Virgin Islands, celebrating our people, our culture, and rich heritage of hospitality. I congratulate and express thanks to Virgin Islands Property & Yacht magazine for joining us in spreading BVILOVE with this Christmas themed issue. I am sure you will enjoy the great gift ideas from local specialty stores, delicious festive food ideas and all the beautiful homes being profiled. However, we hope that your encounter with BVILOVE does not end in the pages of this magazine but that you will explore our many islands and cays and truly indulge in the many authentic experiences that we have to offer. Experience our local cuisine prepared by award-winning chefs or local cooks – I’m sure you will love our national dish of fungi and fish; go sailing with our many experienced captains and explore secret get-aways, where cobalt blue waves splash against powder white sand beaches; take a safari bus over our lush green hillsides for the most spectacular views; meet some of our colourful characters who are guaranteed to make your visit memorable; discover our many attractions from museums in Tortola, the colourful, laidback beach bars on Jost Van Dyke and nearby cays, the Greater Baths National Park in Virgin Gorda, the Conch Shell Mounds in Anegada and the many other unique experiences found throughout our entire chain of islands. At the end of your trip, we believe that the only difficulty you will face will be that of choosing your favourite island. If you are visiting, I implore you to take time for what I would describe as an amazing combination of pleasurable activities, unforgettable sightseeing adventures, and nature-induced relaxation, which will rejuvenate your body, mind, and soul. Our people are eager to welcome all visitors to our Territory, whether you are a repeat visitor or if you are making your maiden voyage to the British Virgin Islands. Welcome again and thank you for making the British Virgin Islands your destination of choice. Do have an enjoyable visit with us, and we look forward to greeting you with BVILOVE on your next visit! With BVILOVE, Premier Hon. Andrew A. Fahie

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Season’s greetings

Photographed by Carolina Ansaldo. Wardrobe by Arawak, hair by Studio One Salon & Spa.

On our cover

The breathtaking Amateras on Virgin Gorda, presented by BVI Sotheby’s International Realty. Photography by Javierto Mar.

Christmas is a time of joy in the British Virgin Islands. Virgin Islanders are passionate about Christmas; celebrating it with tradition and flair. I love seeing all the decorations in Road Town and there is excitement in the air as trees are purchased and planning goes into overdrive for the day. In our house with two young boys, we’ll be figuring out how to hold them back from excitedly knocking down the Christmas tree! No doubt we’ll be rising early on Christmas Day: there’s nothing like seeing their happy little faces as they tear the paper off their presents. However you and your loved ones celebrate Christmas, we hope that this issue of VIPY will give you a few ideas. Create your Christmas shopping list with gifts that can be purchased right here in the BVI. We feature some wonderful ideas in our first annual BVI Christmas gift guide on page 15. Personalise your Christmas gifts purchased in local stores with the clever and quirky handmade packaging ideas on page 64. A big part of the enjoyment of Christmas day is, of course, food. Gather together outdoors for a backyard Christmas celebration, see page 52 for all the recipes. And it wouldn’t be VIPY without a tour of some of the BVI’s most stunning villas. In our exclusive cover feature on page 22, BVI Sotheby’s International Realty presents for sale Amateras, situated in Princess Quarters, Virgin Gorda. Featuring 360-degree views from St Thomas right around to the Copper Mine, this property is truly breathtaking. Also on Virgin Gorda is Symbio villa, a secluded haven surrounded by lush tropical gardens, presented by Smiths Gore for short-term rental, see page 36. From all of us at VIPY, thanks for reading this year. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Erin PS: In our last issue we promised that we would confirm the date for Jill Tattersall’s art show at Nutmeg & Co. Opening night is Thursday 2 December 2021 from 5:30 - 7:30pm. The show is open to the public and will continue until 10 December. Masks are required. THANKS TO OUR SPONSOR THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS TOURIST BOARD

H E AV E N O N E A RT H A hilltop locale with impressive views anchored by Virgin Gorda’s iconic boulders help make Amateras a villa like no other. BY SARA SHERMAN P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y J AV I E R T O M A R

The beautiful, contemporary interior styling and furnishings at Amateras are a stand-out, not to mention the stunning ocean views from almost every window.

FROM WITNESSING A glorious sunrise over the Atlantic, to a magnificent sunset on the Sir Francis Drake Channel, every time of day or night at Amateras is a marvel. Surrounded by nearly 360-degree views of the stunning Caribbean seascape, this newly, completely renovated home is perched atop one of the best (and highest) points in Virgin Gorda. Meaning “Goddess of the Sun”, Amateras features a glowing exterior that warmly welcomes anyone into her comforting embrace. Maritha Keil and her team of Sotheby’s agents look forward to giving you a tour or helping you to purchase or rent this elegant work of art.

Location, location

Situated at the end of a quiet and privately owned cul-de-sac in Princess Quarters, Amateras is set on 1.5 acres of hilltop land that naturally incorporates the dramatic Virgin Gorda landscape while using the iconic boulders (also found at The Baths) and used as prominent features throughout the home and gardens. A multitude of wraparound terraces, balconies, and walkways capture unparalleled water views and seamlessly blur the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. Secluded and private, with lush tropical gardens, this property is a gem nestled amongst the boulders of the friendly island. Many long-term owners of the high-end restaurants or resorts on the island have chosen Princess Quarters as their special place to build their own personal residences, as this area is tucked away and off the beaten path.

Unparalleled beauty

Anyone looking for an outer island private home or vacation villa will be thrilled to see all that Amateras has to offer when they take a tour with any of BVI Sotheby’s representatives (listed below).

Its hilltop position with wraparound views help to make it the star of the show. Anchored by boulders at nearly every turn, you can choose to either sit and enjoy the windward seascapes with breaking waves rolling over the southern shores below, or sit poolside and watch the boats entering the Spanish Town Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour and distant sailboats weaving through the northwest island channel. Sip drinks facing the myriad of colours of a golden setting sun in the

western sky and begin stargazing from a vantage point that doesn’t get any better than this. Imagine laying in a hammock or comfortable daybed while watching an amazing display of evening planets and stars gradually come into view and ever so slowly begin to drift across 360-degrees of evening sky. Designed by Architect Michael Helm and built in 2007 by Chris Yates of Yates Construction, the home was constructed with some of the finest quality materials and has remained

structurally sound even after the passing of Hurricane Irma in 2017. With more than 50-years of experience of building in Virgin Gorda, Chris Yates remains one of the most respected contractors of her day, and is still appreciated for her high standard of attention to details and finishes. Safely located and hidden away in a partially gated community, this modern estate property offers ample parking for 10 vehicles along a circular paved driveway that gently leads up to an elegant, yet extremely

with a unique granite boulder garden. A meandering garden pathway using gently elevated stone steps and recycled plastic steps (purposely used for durability and low maintenance) help to provide easy access from the lower parking area to the hilltop main living or outdoor lounging areas which have been carefully placed among the tall granite boulders softened and flanked by the lush and aromatic gardens, fruit trees and greenery. In the main house, the sunken chef’s kitchen is a highlight of the

various dining, gaming, reading, or group lounging spaces. Granite countertops provide a wraparound bar/dining counter that seats 12; high-end quality wooden cabinetry and stainless steel appliances complete the kitchen. This is truly the “heart of the home”, a stunning gathering space for family or guests. A butler’s pantry and bar service area, with additional overflow visitors’ bath with shower, are located just off kitchen, which helps to make this main living area complete.

J OST VAN DYKE - SM ALL I S LAN D, B I G EXPERI EN CES

Packed with attractions, tiny Jost Van Dyke’s is one of BVI’s “must visits”. BY APRIL GLASGOW

46 | V I P R O P E R T Y & YA C H T

White Bay on Jost Van Dyke is one of the most renowned in the BVI - stunning white sand and an assortment of beach bars to sip and bob the day away!

“JOST VAN DYKE is a small island, but big on experiences.” This is what RaeNisia Scatliffe, BVI Tourist Board regional marketing manager, says about the 3.1 square mile island. “No one can get bored, there’s just always something to do.” In this feature, Scatliffe, along with other JVD faces share the JVD “gems” that visitors and locals alike love about the island

White Bay

If you’re sailing into the southern side

of Jost Van Dyke, you’ll see a white, pristine shoreline. That’s where it gets its name. White Bay is one of the island’s most popular beaches for good reason. Not only is the beach good for swimming because the waves are somewhat “broken” by the coral reef which protects the bay, it’s also the go to spot for sailors on day trips who are looking for good food, good fun and good vibes. Popular spots include Hendo’s and Soggy Dollar Bar, named for patrons’ usual form of payment – beach-soaked

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2021 | 47

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE A visit to Jost is never complete without a fun day spent at White Bay. A painkiller or two at Soggy Dollar, lunch at Hendo’s, a rum punch Ivan’s. Then on to One Love Bar, Gertrude’s or Coco Loco for a sundowner. OPPOSITE Jost Van Dyke’s beaches are what vacation dreams are made of.

dollar bills. Yes, you can dinghy in, but many of the bay’s visitors jump overboard and swim ashore. Also on the bay is Ivan’s Campground, ideal for people wanting to sleep in a tent under the stars or in the comfort of a quaint cabin on the beach.

Foxy’s

Even if you’re not from BVI, you may have heard about Foxy’s. Since1968, the beach bar and club in Great Harbour has been a crowd favourite for its cuisine, cocktails and spectacular entertainment. Weekends are the time to sample Foxy’s famous beach BBQ , where you may see the

48 | V I P R O P E R T Y & YA C H T

‘Yes, you can dinghy in, but many of the bay’s visitors jump overboard and swim ashore’ man himself – Sir Foxy Callwood, strumming his guitar barefoot (he never wears shoes) and singing original reggae and folk ballads. And yes, he’s a “sir”, as he was knighted by the Queen of England in 2009, for his work in tourism and preservation. Foxy’s son Gregory, resident and musician, says Foxy’s is the “party capital of the world”, known for its annual Old Year’s Night celebration, a huge attraction that brings together hundreds of partiers who come

to watch international and local musical acts, and ring in the new year with great fun and excitement. The pandemic has put a “pause” on the party, but interested patrons should continue to check out the Foxy’s website (https://foxysbar.com/) for updates on the next big event.

Methodist church

Methodism runs deep in Virgin Islands culture and the Great Harbour Methodist Church is a good reminder

J O S T VA N DY K E

ABOVE The Bubbly Pool is on the east side of Jost Van Dyke. Just a short 10-minute walk from Long Bay near Foxy’s Taboo - along the goat path by the salt pond. Check the conditions before you depart, as on rough days there can be rip currents. If seas are rough, watch from a distance, or on a calm day, relax in the pool.

of the islands’ history. Damage caused by major hurricanes has left the church only a semblance of its former glory, but it is still a good pit stop for history buffs and religious visitors.

Bubbly pool

Businessman and JVD’s elected representative Honourable Melvin “Mitch” Turnbull, says the entire island is special because it’s “one of the staples of BVI’s tourism product”. But one of his favourite gems is the Bubbly Pool, where “you feel like you’re in a jacuzzi.” The Bubbly Pool is a natural attraction on Jost Van Dyke’s eastern side. The “pool” is formed by the crashing of waves over and between a rock wall, forming a wading area fit for children and other seawater newbies.

50 | V I P R O P E R T Y & YA C H T

You can sit in the pool and enjoy the bubbles, and you’ll definitely want to take photographs of the relaxation spot, and the scenery, along the 20-minute hike to get there.

Little Harbour

The scene is idyllic, with glass-like water framed by lush green hillsides. Little Harbour is a different side of Jost Van Dyke: sailors dock up right next to Sidney’s Peace and Love Bar and relax with a drink in hand as they wait for a scrumptious local dish. Abe’s by the Sea is another Little Harbour restaurant, known for its fresh grilled lobster.

An upcoming gem - Jost Van Dyke Fish Festival The BVI Tourist Board is gearing up for the first ever Fish Frenzy/Festival on Jost Van Dyke in December. Many of the island’s residents are fishermen, and seafood is the highlight of many of its restaurant menus, so it was a

“no-brainer”, says RaeNisia. This new festival will be part of the annual BVI Food Fete celebrations. While Jost Van Dyke gems can be found in its great restaurants, beautiful scenery and fun events, Scatliffe also says JVD’s hospitality is the real diamond: “the people make it special”. ■ FOR AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO THE BVI AND TO GET THE MOST FROM YOUR VISIT, DOWNLOAD THE BVI NOW APP FOR FREE.

‘What could be more delightful on a balmy BVI day than a festive meal shared with friends and family’ 7. Place egg yolks in a heatproof bowl. Place bowl over a half-filled saucepan of simmering water and add the reduced vinegar; cook and whisk until just thickened for 1-2 minutes. 8. Gradually add the melted butter in a slow, steady stream, whisking constantly, until fully incorporated and the sauce has thickened. This should take 2-4 minutes. 9. Remove from the heat and stir

in the tarragon and some salt and pepper to taste. Cover and keep in a warm place. 10. Return the water in the saucepan to a boil and stir in 1 teaspoon salt. Add the turnips to the water and cook until tender to the tip of a knife, 8-10 minutes. Drain well. 11. To serve, arrange the beef in the roasting dish along with the turnips. Slice and serve with Béarnaise sauce on the side.

1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. 2. Rub beef tenderloin with olive oil; season with salt and pepper. Spread with horseradish and top with oregano; wrap in prosciutto slices, overlapping as needed. 3. Place tenderloin on a trivet inside a large roasting dish. Roast in the oven until the centre reaches 145°F on an instant-read thermometer, turning halfway. Cook for 45-60 minutes. 4. When ready, remove from the oven and transfer the beef to a platter; loosely cover with aluminium foil and let rest. 5. While the beef rests, prepare the Béarnaise sauce. Combine the vinegar, shallot, bay leaf, and peppercorns in a small saucepan. 6. Bring to a boil over high heat and then reduce to a simmer, cooking until reduced to about 1 1/2 tablespoons liquid, for 3-5 minutes. Take off the heat.

1. Preheat the oven to 300°F. Grease and line a 9-inch loose-bottomed cake pan with parchment paper. 2. In a large heatproof bowl, combine the chocolate, butter, cinnamon, and salt. Place the bowl over a half-filled saucepan of simmering water, stirring until melted and smooth. Set off the heat. 3. In a separate large mixing bowl, beat together the egg yolks and 1 /2 cup granulated sugar using an electric mixer until pale and thick, 3-4 minutes. Beat in cocoa followed by melted chocolate mixture. 4. In another large (oil-free) mixing bowl, whip the egg whites to medium peaks. Gradually beat in the remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar; continue to beat until sugar dissolves and the meringue mixture is thick and glossy, around 3-4 minutes. 5. Whisk about one-third of the meringue mixture into the chocolate mixture. Fold in the remaining meringue mixture in two additions. Spoon the batter into the prepared cake pan and gently rap the pan on a flat surface to help settle it. 6. Bake the torte until risen and dry to the touch, about 1 hour. When ready, a toothpick should come out clean from the centre. 7. Remove to a cooling rack, letting the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Turn out onto the wire rack to finish cooling. 8. In a medium mixing bowl, whip cream to soft peaks. Place torte on a cake stand or platter; top with whipped cream, berries, and a light dusting of powdered sugar.

GIFT WRAPPING

GIFT BAGS MADE FROM NEWSPAPER WITH PAPER DOILIES YOU NEED: old newspaper glue stick paper doilies puncher, ribbon HOW TO DO IT Fold a large piece of newspaper in the middle from top to bottom. Now fold the right and the left sides to the centre so they overlap a little. Glue this overlay together. For the bottom, fold a strip in the width needed from the bottom to the top, open it, fold in the sides so they form a triangle. Fold the upper half down and the bottom part up – again the paper has to overlay a little and is glued together.

Use the glue sparingly, so that none runs and sticks to the inside. Your bag is now ready now and can be filled with goodies. Fill the bag, then close it with a paper doily and some ribbon.

GIFT TAGS YOU NEED: brown cardboard (from old packaging), not too thick white buttons in different sizes old book pages black paper scissors, glue, black felt pen cutter, ruler, scissors, puncher, thin ribbon star-punch (optional) HOW TO DO IT First cut the tags in the size you need from the brown cardboard with a

cutter and ruler, then cut both the corners on one end of the tag. For the snowman: glue two white buttons to the cardboard, cut out a black hat and stick it on top. Draw two arms to the left and right with the felt pen. Cut out a few stars from old book pages and decorate the tag with it. For the Christmas tree: cut a triangle from old book pages. Cut it into several strips and glue them to the cardboard, leave some space in between. Don´t make it too neat, it looks nice if it is a bit topsy turvy. Cut a trunk and a few stars from the black paper, decorate the tree with it. Punch holes at the top end of the tags and pull a ribbon through it.

‘The eyes and buttons can be punched out with an office puncher and glued to the body. Names and wishes can be stamped or written on the belly of the snowman’

OLD TIN CANS FOR HOMEMADE COOKIES YOU NEED: tin cans self-adhesive film or self-adhesive office labels pencil, scissors spray paint tissue paper

SNOWMAN GIFT CARDS YOU NEED: white, black, orange cardboard three sizes of circle punches (or three different glasses and a pencil) scissors, glue, puncher ribbon lettering stamps (optional) HOW TO DO IT You will need three circles in different sizes for each snowman, which will be glued them together in a slightly overlapping manner. If you do not

66 | V I P R O P E R T Y & YA C H T

have punches, draw around three glasses with different diameters on the white cardboard and cut them out with scissors. The hat is made from the black cardboard, and the orange cardboard can be cut into a small triangle to become the nose. The eyes and buttons can be punched out with an office puncher and glued to the body. Pull the ribbon through a hole in the hat made by a puncher and there you go! Names and wishes can be stamped or written on the belly of the snowman.

HOW TO DO IT Remove the labels from the cans, being careful of the sharp rim. A strong adhesive tape can be placed around the opening to make it safe. Draw stars on the self-adhesive film, cut them out and stick them on the can. Spray paint the can in a space with good ventilation and an appropriate underlay, then remove the stars after drying. Put the homemade cookies into small clear plastic bags, then wrap them in tissue paper and place in the tins.
