SOPER’S HOLE REVITALISATION West End is bustling once again, with more shops and amenities than ever before BY A M A N DA U L R I C H

Soper’s Hole is a popular overnight anchorage and many businesses have returned and are open for business. This image: Caribbean Jules Photography

BACK IN THE 18th century, a former plantation owner, McCuthbert Soper, gave his family name to the West End Harbour, now called Soper’s Hole. Just off the southern coast of Tortola, Frenchman’s Cay protects Soper’s Hole and creates one of the BVI’s most picturesque first impressions for many visitors to Tortola. Frenchman’s Cay is connected to Tortola by a small bridge under which clear water flows constantly, creating a fantastic marina environment. Lined with quaint shops and a kaleidoscope of colours, Soper’s Hole is the Caribbean dream.

The well-protected bay and sandy anchorage always benefits from a cool breeze and is high on the list of overnight stays for charter yachts touring the Virgin Islands. Deep drafts also attract many beautiful mega yachts, especially in the winter. Cruisers from all over the world return, again and again, to find respite in their temporary home at Soper’s Hole. When Hurricane Irma barreled through the British Virgin Islands in 2017, Soper’s Hole in Tortola’s West End, like many other harbours in the archipelago, took a hard hit. Some businesses in the marina were completely levelled, while others struggled in the months post-storm to offer limited services

16 | V I P R O P E R T Y & YA C H T

from damaged buildings. Soper’s Hole was also virtually cut off from the US Virgin Islands; the hurricane destroyed the West End ferry terminal, meaning that visitors and residents travelling via ferry between Tortola and St. Thomas could only go through Road Town. But now, more than two years after the record-breaking storm, the scenic marina on the far western tip of Tortola is back on its feet with new-and-improved offerings. The protected anchorage with a water depth between 20-30 feet features moorings and full-service marina facilities including long term or overnight dockage with water and electricity available to all berths.

Other necessities for boaters like diesel, gas and ice are also available. A wide host of eclectic restaurants and shops entice boaters and land lovers alike. Soper’s Hole Wharf & Marina officially reopened on December 13, 2019 with a block party and invited islanders to visit both long-standing and brand-new businesses. As of August 2019, West End is also formally reconnected with neighbouring islands. A temporary ferry terminal was opened that month, and officials from Customs and Immigration are now on hand to accommodate international arrivals. Construction on a more permanent structure will continue into the spring.

VOYAGE OF A

LIFETIME TUCKED INTO SOPER’S Hole on West End, Tortola, VOYAGE Charter Yachts has been operating as a family-run business since 1995. They offer first-class service and an excellent experience onboard “AllInclusive, Captained and Bareboat” performance sailing catamarans and power cats. Robin and Jo-Ann Downing,

20 | V I P R O P E R T Y & YA C H T

the owners of VOYAGE charters, first arrived in Tortola in 1995 and instantly fell in love with the delightful, quaint West End location on Frenchman’s Cay so they made it the charter base for a fleet of VOYAGE yachts. Robin’s passion for boats began as a teenager whilst accompanying his grandfather on numerous fishing

expeditions off the coast of Durban, South Africa. During these trips, he developed a love for the ocean and a fervent interest in naval design, which eventually led to his national recognition in 1992, when he received the Centenary Boat Show Award for “Best Boat of The Year”. In 1994 Robin sailed from Durban to Cape Town and on to the Cayman

AFTER A DIFFICULT two-year rebuilding period, Arawak’s West End boutique is now open and ready for customers. Prior to the passage of Hurricane Irma, Arawak’s store and the neighbouring shops, provisioning outposts and restaurants located at Frenchman’s Cay formed an eclectic mainstay on yachting itineraries in the British Virgin Islands. But after the record-setting Category Five storm ripped apart the

docks at Soper’s Hole marina in September 2017, the entire West End community was forced to close its doors. Now, after significant reconstruction, Arawak’s boutique is ready to help spearhead the area’s recovery. After reopening in December 2019, the shop partnered with other local businesses in hopes that customers will once again want to return to the far western corner of Tortola.

“We are open but keenly waiting for the other shops to come back to give West End the draw it had pre-Irma,” explains Alice Lyons, a marketing and sales assistant at Arawak. “Previously, the boaters stopped into West End to replenish food supplies, fuel, ice and shop in the boutiques. COOPER ISLAND BEACH Club is a unique eco-resort on the picturesque Manchioneel Bay on Cooper Island. With sustainability at the forefront of all operations, it’s only natural that a custom-built microbrewery, powered by the sun, was the next evolution of this exceptional destination. Back 2012, the idea for the brewery was born, most likely over a beer with the owners. At that time, the resort was operating at around 75% solarpowered. An earlier investment in a private desalination and purification plant to produce clean and safe drinking water had enabled them to reach a major goal and stop selling bottled water. But cases of imported beer continued to produce numerous bags of aluminium waste. With little to no recycling available, the brewery is allowing Cooper Island to further reduce its waste output.

European Ltd., Cooper Island Beach Club pounced on the rapidly-growing demand for craft beer across the globe. “We felt that our clientele was ready for craft beer and we put a business plan together with our consultant. However, it wasn’t until we built new premises for the boutique, coffee shop and rum bar in November 2013 that we had the space to make it a reality,” said Sam Baker, Cooper Island Beach Club Assistant Manager. And Cooper Island Brewing Company was born. Efficiency was the name of the game when it came to designing the brewery itself. Working hard to save space, power and water, the three 500L fermentation vessels, kettle, mash-tun and whirlpool were custom built in stainless steel and shipped to the BVI within six months. A grain mill, glycol chiller and kegcleaning station are located next to the brewing room, along with walkin refrigeration to store the finished product in 30L (8-gallon) kegs. Installed in December 2015, the first batch of beer was on tap at the bar by March 2016. “We now have five fermentation

36 | V I P R O P E R T Y & YA C H T

vessels which allow us to produce 2500L of beer at a time and have six different beers on tap,” said Baker.

Sustainability The focus of the entire resort is having as little environmental impact as possible, and the brewery is no different. Only 570L of water is used to produce 500L of beer. The sun supplies the power for the resort’s power grid and a solar water heater on the roof supplies hot water for the mashing-in process and cleaning the brewhouse. The only imported ingredients are the barley, hops and yeast, as the rainwater and desalinated water is purified on-site. At the end of each production batch, no more than 50 gallons of water is used to clean the equipment and kegs. Everything is cleaned with environmentally-friendly products and the wastewater is collected to be used for garden irrigation. The spent grain goes to a local farmer for goat feed. In addition to doing their part to reduce waste, Cooper Island Beach Club gives back by supporting

the BVI Sea Turtle Programme (a partnership between ARK and the BVI Government) by donating $1 from every Turtle IPA beer sold.

The B eer General Manager Andy Murrant is a self-taught brewer with lots of assistance from Adam Conrad on staff. The beer selection caters to an international clientele and a sampler “flight” of six different beers is available in the famous Rum Bar. Guests will typically find a lager, pilsner, amber ale, wheat beer, IPA and British Bitter on tap, but seasonal offerings such as a Guinness-style stout and a new Kölsch featuring Sorrel grown on island will be released this month. The beer is exclusive to Cooper Island as they can only just keep up with demand at the resort. Guests can enjoy the great beer while on island, but 64oz stainless steel growlers are available for purchase to take beer back on boats and yachts. Other Cooper Island Brewing Company merchandise includes insulated cups, t-shirts, flags, stickers, bottle openers, signage and clocks. ■

VILLAS & VIEWS

THE BVI IS notoriously successful at celebrating the full moon with sandy toes and endless rum punch, however, we all revel in the beauty of occasionally being invited to an intimate dinner party surrounded by good friends instead. These gatherings give us time to hold real conversations and appreciate the views where the villa is nestled away. Dinner parties aren’t only a great way to initiate friendships, they’re

LEFT The pool terrace is the

perfect place for sunset cocktails or a casual BBQ with friends BELOW LEFT A well-stocked bar is the hallmark of a good host/ess. Fill with a variety of options so there’s something for everyone

one of the best ways to sustain them. Entertaining in your own home allows you to create your exclusive oasis and enjoy the evening at your own pace. Throughout our years of experience at Smiths Gore, we have learnt that an inviting hosting area is top of the checklist for many of our buyers. Whether this is an extended terrace commanding a magical waterfront position or a pool deck with room for lounging. Rest assured it will evoke an emotional connection to the property. It’s far too easy to let your mind wander and imagine yourself cooking up a feast at the BBQ or serving a pitcher of sangrias during the BVI’s golden hour. There is no denying that the BVI delivers plenty of inviting places to drink, but it’s not too often that you walk into someone’s house and they

have a fully stocked bar. Once you’ve laid eyes on it, it’s guaranteed to make you consider how easily you could build one in your own home! This really is the epitome of a special property with owners who love to host and is something we are seeing more and more of in the BVI. While many think that the seated dinner is under threat, it’s up to you, the host, to set the level of formality and protocols. The primary threat in 2020 comes in the form of culinary and dietary challenges. Therefore, it’s best not to overcomplicate the menu. Of course, communicate with all your guests prior to the evening and test the waters for allergies, however, a selection of pre-prepared dishes and salads through the centre of the table ensures you cater to everyone.

ABOVE Seating in groups

Top tips for hosting in the BVI TURN PHONES OFF Many of us have experienced delightful gatherings interrupted by continuous beeps and buzzing. Sitting down and sharing a meal with friends should be cherished. There is not a place setting for your phone so don’t invite it to join for dinner. CURATING THE GUEST LIST If the conversation

is flat, it really doesn’t matter how fluffy the mousse was. Mixing friend groups can be a blast, but it does require an attentive host to ensure the conversation moves along. One of the easiest ways to help people gel is to point out the things they share in common, then watch a new friendship take shape!

CITRONELLA CANDLES Candles are an easy way to add dimension and ambience to your tablespace without breaking the bank. However, mosquitos will be poised and ready to crash your party so be sure to have specific citronella ones.

ICE It sounds too simple, but living in the BVI comes with its challenges - like keeping beverages icy cold! Over-buy, keep it stored, and don’t run out!

42 | V I P R O P E R T Y & YA C H T

allow for great conversations and a shaded area means afternoon soirees stay cool

Transforming your beloved house into a fully-functioning restaurant for the evening isn’t the desired outcome when entertaining. You will want to be present as the night unfolds, keeping one eye on topping up drinks and the other on the flowing conversation. We spend so much of our time either at work or running errands all weekend long, why shouldn’t we enjoy the sanctuary of our own home with others? We so lovingly renovate it and make it a reflection of our personality so let’s share that with new and old friends over dinner. Making memories at home helps us fall in love with our property all over again and after all, it’s our life’s most extravagant purchase. ■

Bryan and Sarah Baeumler were on a family holiday in the Bahamas when they discovered an old resort dating back to the 1960s and immediately saw the potential for creating something rather special. Opened in February 2020, Caerula Mar Club is situated in the south of Andros, the largest of the Bahamian islands and also the least inhabited.
