Message from the Premier of the Virgin Islands

Welcome, one and all

As Premier of these beautiful islands, we are delighted to welcome you with BVILOVE to our home, the British Virgin Islands. Our small cluster of islands with secluded anchorages, splendid beaches, a world-class marine industry, and favourable trade winds, has combined to earn us the reputation of “Sailing Capital of the World.” Our magnificent archipelago has re-emerged to showcase even more stunning, pristine land and seascapes. But more significantly, as a people emerging from recent adversity, we have shown resilience and returned to our core values, which we call BVILOVE. BVILOVE is a mantra that unites not only the people of the territory but resonates through all the sectors of the economy and the various aspects of our lives.

We love our British Virgin Islands, and we invite you to love this territory too. In fact, we know that many of our loyal guests have had a lifetime love affair with the British Virgin Islands, and first-time guests quickly embrace us as well.

I am pleased to say that we have a renewed focus on showcasing authentic experiences in the British Virgin Islands, celebrating our people, our culture, and rich heritage of hospitality.

I congratulate and express thanks to Virgin Islands

Property & Yacht magazine for joining us in spreading BVILOVE with this special issue that celebrates Luxe Living. I am sure you will enjoy the many stories, talented people and spectacular scenery being profiled. However, we hope that your encounter with BVILOVE does not end in the pages of this magazine, but that you will explore our many islands and cays and truly indulge in the many authentic experiences that we have to offer.

Experience our local cuisine prepared by awardwinning chefs or local cooks–I’m sure you will love our national dish of fungi and fish; go sailing with our many

experienced captains and explore secret getaways, where cobalt blue waves splash against powder white sand beaches; take a safari bus over our lush green hillsides for the most spectacular views; meet some of our colourful characters who are guaranteed to make your visit memorable; discover our many attractions from museums in Tortola, the colourful, laidback beach bars on Jost Van Dyke and nearby cays, the Greater Baths National Park in Virgin Gorda, the Conch Shell Mounds in Anegada and the many other unique experiences found throughout our entire chain of islands.

At the end of your trip, we believe that the only difficulty you will face will be that of choosing your favourite island. If you are visiting, I implore you to take time for what I would describe as an amazing combination of pleasurable activities, unforgettable sightseeing adventures, and natureinduced relaxation, which will rejuvenate your body, mind, and soul. Our people are eager to welcome all visitors to our territory, whether you are a repeat visitor or if you are making your maiden voyage to the British Virgin Islands. Welcome again and thank you for making the British Virgin Islands your destination of choice. Do have an enjoyable visit with us, and we look forward to greeting you with BVILOVE on your next visit!

With BVI LOVE, Dr. the Honourable Natalio

Happy New Year!

In the BVI, I think that we all have the opportunity to experience luxury every day - just by walking onto one of our gorgeous, white sand beaches. As Roy and I hop across the white sand of Trellis Bay with our two excited boys in tow, the moment I love the most is seeing that aqua coloured water lapping on the shoreline. That to me is a luxury not many are lucky enough to enjoy.

In our LUXE LIVING issue, we have thoroughly enjoyed curating some of the most “in the lap of luxury” properties, food and living spaces for you to enjoy.

In our Exclusive Cover Feature, BVI Sotheby’s International Realty presents three properties, two of which are situated in the secluded, untouched Little Bay, Tortola. The third is situated on Virgin Gorda, which oozes luxury living at every turn.

Turn to page 34 to read all about Long Bay Resort’s phase two development - Long Bay Residences. Owners Brian and Shamra are no strangers to the development of exclusive resorts and are now putting this experience into creating luxurious, turn-key properties for purchase as second homes or investment opportunities.

In our Delish section, we were excited to watch private Chef Jacob Dearie create culinary heaven in the kitchen. Having previously worked in a two Michelin starred restaurant and apprentice Head Chef at Moskito Island. In 2021 Jacob launched Dearie Catering and is passionate about showcasing the fine flavours of the Virgin Islands. We follow that up with some sleek and chic dishes that you can create at home in our recipe feature on page 56.

In the fifth installment of our Young Entrepreneur series we meet Kevis Hughes. His background in luxury - from jewellery to tourism and his innate affinity for the super yacht industry make him a young man to watch. We tell his story on page 64. Finally, thanks for picking up your copy of VIPY - wishing you and your loved ones a very happy and prosperous 2023.

Creative Energy

Brandon Tang is no stranger to design. Prior to moving to the BVI in 2014, he founded a New York design studio after a career in fashion and design. ‘’I was traveling a lot but with the pandemic and a young family BVI became home base so I was encouraged by friends to do something here.’’ And so VISTA, a creative consultancy was founded earlier this year. “Creativity meets commerce,” explained Brandon. “I help clients with interiors, marketing, development and custom scents. For instance we just finished a custom rug for a villa and we’re creating a line of signature room and bath amenities for hospitality properties.”

With clients in the BVI, the US and Caribbean (USVI, St.Barts, Curacao) the word is out.

Ilaali Villa (pronounced Ee-lah-li)

If Little Bay Estate feels exclusive on its own, then Ilaali Villa feels truly resort-like. A beautifully maintained 1.8 acres supports a three bedroom main villa and a standalone guest cottage with two additional bedrooms. Perfect for multi-generational families visiting together or simply a great space to offer to friends - Ilaali Villa is a private getaway that is simply unmatched. This villa has been owner-occupied and is lovingly cared for, but offers incredible rental opportunities. The main house is spacious and full of natural light, taking full advantage of the hillside and of ocean breezes for cooler island living. The residential wing consists of the primary bedroom plus two others, each with its own en suite bath. The primary master bedroom overlooks the secluded beach below, meaning the sounds of the sea caress the property at all times. A wall of built-in wardrobe with shelving and cupboards covers one side of the room, meaning there is a place for everything that can be hidden behind the chic smoked glass sliding doors. The primary bath is modern and elegantly designed to maximise space and offer luxurious privacy. Double sinks, a large lighted mirror and a walk-in shower give the bedroom a spa-like feel. The spacious bedroom areas are beautifully decorated with porcelain and/or ceramic tiled floors and walls with high ceilings and overhead fans. Two large balconies off the primary bedroom are the star of the show, allowing for private space to enjoy a morning coffee or take in the beautiful ocean views at any time of day.

The two other large bedrooms in this main house are spacious and both have elegant bathrooms, one of which features a stand-alone bathtub with views over the sandy beach below.

Seaside Escape and Ilaali Villa are two exquisite homes offered by BVI Sotheby’s International Realty in Little Bay, which feel like their own private island. The road to Villa Ilaali is paved and the road to Seaside Escape is partially paved, deterring cruise ship traffic and keeping the tourist-hauling taxis away. Much like a private community, Little Bay is all about sanctuary and the quiet island life. The fact that there are no beach bars or restaurants means the only people who are there are usually those that actually live in the bay and who choose to stay quiet and secluded in their secret Paradise. The residents have the beach mostly to themselves with perfectly soft, white sand and no sharp corals or rocks to hinder the experience. Neighbours often see each other here, as it is a dog-friendly and clean beach that caters mainly to the neighbours and locals who value seclusion. If all of this isn’t enough to convince you of the idyllic living of Little Bay, then tack on that it is close to the airport, shops and ferries going to North Sound, Virgin Gorda and Scrub Island. It’s also close to Josiah’s Bay for surfing and the Sail Caribbean Dive Centre at Hodges Creek. Little Bay offers the best of both worlds; you’ll come for the convenience but stay for the peaceful island solitude.

Long Bay Resort, situated on the North West side of the main island of Tortola was reopened at the end of 2020 after a total refurbishment by owners Brian and Shamra Strange, a couple originally hailing from Malibu with a special affinity for the British Virgin Islands. The property and the couple that own it both have a special provenance that come together to create something truly unique.

Owner Brian is one of only 350 people in the world to successfully scale the Seven Summits - climbing the highest peaks in all seven continents including Mt Everest.

Whether you are planning a party with family, looking for a unique experience with friends, hosting a corporate event - there’s nothing

quite as exclusive and luxurious as private dining with Dearie Catering.

Born to be a chef

Some people are born to cook. Chef Dearie is no different. “I was born a chef” he shared as he reflected on his childhood years. He grew up

Testimonial

“Jacob created and executed a delicious and beautifully presented lunch for 14 people. Super responsive, flexible and accommodating with regards to menu planning, it was far better than going to any restaurant! We could not have asked for anything more - it was beyond our expectations. A joy to have in our home, our guests were blown away (and he left our kitchen spotless!).

Highly recommend!

Thank you Jacob!”

“Chef Jacob is a very talented and creative chef. He was the most pleasant surprise and delight of our experience in the BVl. Jacob is very thoughtful with his menus using only the freshest of ingredients creating delicious dishes leaving you wanting for more. We were astounded as to how he was able to accommodate gluten free, lactose intolerant and dairy free restrictions without sacrificing taste. Being a sushi snob from New York City, he was able to impress me and my guests with a fabulous sushi themed dinner.

Every plate is beautifully presented and his summary for each plate is interesting to listen to as well. One of my guests wished she could bring him to prepare all her meals. We can’t wait to engage with Chef Jacob again and have our clients experience his diverse cuisine.”

in the kitchens and dining rooms of the various restaurants, pubs and hotels his parents owned and operated in England. With his father being a chef himself, he was able to explore ingredients and his culinary creativityigniting what would later become a lifelong love of cooking. “I lived above the restaurant growing up and I’ve known from 11 years old that I wanted to be a chef”. At the age of 15, he left school and was given the opportunity of a lifetime to work as a Stagiaire at the Virgin Limited Edition property in Morocco. Shortly after that, still at the tender age of 15, Jacob’s career kicked off when he advanced to the position of Apprentice Chef at the Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’

Saisons in Oxford, England. It is a two Michelin starred restaurant created by Chef Raymond Blanc that served up to 200 guests per day. While there, he worked across the various sections in the kitchen, successfully completing the apprenticeship. He learned classic French cooking techniques, food presentation, farm-to-table concepts, time management skills and developed a strong work ethic. On his 16th birthday, while many teenagers would be out celebrating, Jacob spent his special day in the kitchen, doing what he loves most. With his unwavering dedication to his craft, Jacob continued to climb up the culinary career ladder, working his way up from humble beginnings

as Apprentice Chef to Head Chef at Moskito Island in the Virgin Islands. While he is formally trained in French fine dining, Jacob enjoys cooking a wide range of different cuisines. He is particularly passionate about showcasing the fine flavours of the Virgin Islands. It is this love of local food coupled with his vast knowledge and experience in the culinary industry that laid out the roadmap for his transition into entrepreneurship.

Bringing the kitchen to you

In September 2021, Jacob officially launched Dearie Catering, his own private luxury catering company with an aim to elevate the culinary scene in the Virgin Islands. He offers creative and unique dining experiences, positioning private dining as the latest luxury. Finding inspiration from his travels throughout Europe, South America, Asia and other parts of the world, Jacob can cook a wide variety of different cuisines. With all that he creates, he adds a touch of luxury to each meal by incorporating fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from local farmers and suppliers. “I am passionate about showcasing what the BVI has to offer and the potential of our local produce and seafood,” he told us. Not only does he employ a farm-to-table approach with his cooking, he also believes in eating well while fine dining. “I believe fine dining can not only be tasty but good for you as well.”That’s why he uses more modern techniques in the kitchen. For instance, he doesn’t rely on heavy classical butters and creams. Instead, he creates sauces that are lighter and healthier and

yet are still delicious. Regardless of what he’s cooking, the ingredients, the technique and flavours all come together in perfect harmony to create an unforgettable dish. After initial consultation, a bespoke menu will be designed specifically for you and your guests personal tastes and preferences. a LIFETIME of LUXURY

Luxury is a life-long love affair that starts long before you buy the thing you’ve always wanted. In the industry, many successful stories have their origins rooted in very humble beginnings. For many, they didn’t expect the life decisions they made to push them through the revolving door of an entirely new industry, affording them a special place in the world of luxury. Kevis Hughes, the luxe entrepreneur, is one such story. As part of this special Luxe issue of the magazine, we uncovered the story of how he got started in the luxury industry, his latest ventures and the secrets behind his ongoing success.

How it all started

When Kevis started out in the world of luxury, he had no formal training. But the way he was raised made

him understand the true value and meaning of luxury and created the conditions for his success later on.

When he passed someone on the street, he always greeted them with a “good morning”, “good afternoon” or “good night”. When his grandmother got part time cleaning jobs and needed his help, he never hesitated.

“When she needed my help cleaning the bathrooms, I went right in and cleaned. My brother was on glass duty and I did the toilets,” he told us.

These are just some of the principles that shaped his life, leading him to create brands that are authentic, precious and ultimately, human.

Before he graduated high school, he wanted to find a part time job of his own and wandered through the doors of Columbian Emeralds.

Initially, he applied for gift wrapping as it was during Christmas but when he came into work well dressed in

shirt and tie, his then boss had other plans for him. He ended up being the company’s gofer during that time and upon graduation, he quickly advanced to the position of sales associate. “My first impression was ‘it’s just pretty glass’… who’s going to spend $4,000 on it,” Kevis had wondered to himself. Yet, on the job he was introduced to the different semi-precious gemstones and learned the rules of sales and management. However, some rules are just meant to be broken.

Kevis vividly recalled one faithful day when a female cruise ship passenger walked into the store and asked to see a sapphire tennis bracelet. All the senior sales associates were busy at the time and Kevis really shouldn’t have shown her the bracelet but decided it was the right thing to do in that moment. By the time the customer

left the store, Kevis had secured a $10,000 sale, leaving the senior sales associates and his supervisor in disbelief at how he’d done it. This moment of “learning the rules and breaking them well” is what kick-started his career. There he was, paving his way into the luxury sector, never having any experience in it before. He went on to spend ten and a half years with Columbian Emeralds, working his way within the company. In his hands, the most amazing gemstones and precious metals in the world were transformed into beautiful works of art.

Another lifetime of luxury Kevis experienced two different extremes in his career in luxury. After learning the value of luxury at Colombian Emeralds, he went onto discover the art of putting it all together and curating the full destination packages at the BVI Tourist Board. In June 2009, Kevis was tasked to work with the BVI Tourist Board on a photo shoot for a magazine. He was responsible for curating the jewellery and assisting with overall coordination. By the end of the day, Kevis had made such a strong impression on the Tourist Board team that he was offered a job right then and there. From there, he jumped into the next phase of his career. He spent 9 years, another part of a lifetime in luxury, at the BVI Tourist Board. There, he led the charge at the BVI Tourism Board’s Marketing department where he added sophistication and style to everything from brand development to destination marketing. During his tenure, he mastered the art of luxury hospitality. He tailor-made unique experiences with luxurious products to create exclusivity and once-in-alifetime packages. After his third year

of being at the board, the BVI VIP Club programme, originally born in the German office, was introduced and brought to the BVI office. During that time, Kevis made sure the programme was a huge success. From celebrities to royalty to super models, Kevis had the unique opportunity to meet and work with a number of big names like Wendy Williams, Kevin Hart, Tyra Banks, Gisele Bündchen, Ludacris and even Prince Harry. He also played a role in the organising of a promotional plan with the Wendy Williams show where the

After another decade of luxury, he decided that it was time for him to embrace a new journey.

Being his own boss

In 2017, Kevis left the BVI Tourist Board to pursue his entrepreneurial path. From there, he set foot into the areas of super yachts, marketing and public relations and his first love - jewellery repair. First, Kevis needed to find a way to marry both his love for marketing and his wealth

growing in the Virgin Islands and wider Caribbean. Since its inception, it has grown tremendously, becoming the go-to resource for captains in need of assistance aboard luxury yachts. His third and final business (for now at least), Kiss the Jeweler, is his jewellery and watch repair company. It is currently closed as he is in the process of rebranding. To not reveal any surprises, you’ll have to keep a look-out for updates on his next move and what more will come as he continues to reshape the luxury landscape. In the meantime, he left us with a word of advice for anyone who is trying to make their way into the industry: “Obstacles do get in the way but often times we forget that by learning the rules we are able to break away from them.”
