From the Editor Christmas in the Caribbean can be a little disconcerting for one who isn’t raised here. Hollywood has promoted the imagery that Christmas means snow and chestnuts roasting on an open fire; that said, we promise that the holiday season in the BVI can be just as merry, if not more so than the winter wonderland many residents and visitors are akin to. Not to forget New Year’s Eve witnessing one of the largest, globally renowned parties at Foxy’s on Jost Van Dyke – definitely memories to treasure…or misplace depending on how much holiday cheer you chug away. Our features this month like BVI HomeSense support the distinctive reasons for being here on the islands. Our cover piece depicts Turquoise Dreams, introduced by BVI Sotheby’s International Realty. This property for sale melds modernism with nature in a spectacular way, positioning fortunate owners at the epitome of Tortola’s grand views. Finally, VIPY’s Lauren catches up with Studio One Salon & Spa about their success as the multitalented combo service they represent and stellar services delivered. catering to the holiday health craze In our health conscious world, it has become fashionable to stay fit on holiday and even improve on physique, so that one returns home looking better than when they left. In partnership with FranklyFitness of New York City, Rosewood Little Dix Bay offers a holistic wellness programme designed to have guests ‘Moving Well, Feeling Well, and Being Well.’ FranklyFitness movement specialists lead classes in various stunning locations on resort grounds, harnessing Virgin Gorda’s beauty as the setting to focus on building the mind, body, and spirit. Professionals offer a full range of wellness options from traditional strength training, to more dynamic alternatives like boxing and yoga.  Meditation sessions are offered in tranquil settings like Casey Bay, the resort’s secluded relaxation beach, or the yoga platform, situated at the highest point on resort grounds, with stunning 360 degree views of the resort and the Caribbean Sea. The consultants are also certified to offer fitness lifestyle sessions, developing programmes tailored for the beginner to the professional athlete.

culinary journeys Innovation is the current motivation in Rosewood Little Dix Bay’s kitchen; Executive Chef Ricardo Cera recently joined the resort and his supervision is introducing several new food and beverage programmes. With over 15 years’ experience—most recently serving as an executive sous chef at Antigua’s Jumby Bay, A Rosewood Resort—Cera’s Portuguese background will spark in fresh seafood dishes, that embody complex flavours. His goal is to further highlight the excellent ingredients that can be had in the Caribbean with a focus on honouring the culture of the region. Chef Ricardo and Food & Beverage Director Fabio Petrone will also oversee the execution of a range of new dining experiences like Rosewood’s A Sense Of Taste programme, offering bespoke dining to guests with a demanding palate.  Visitors will enjoy excursions exemplified in the Anegada Lobster Experience. The Coral atoll is renowned for copious Spiny Anegada Lobsters; during the journey, guests will snorkel the reefs the lobsters call home, while learning about the crustacean. This followed by dining at ‘Big Bamboo,’ a restaurant known by oral tradition for being one of the best locales to enjoy grilled spiny lobster.  RLD dining options include a new intimate setting aptly named, Dining On The Rocks; a new table scene for up to four guests is arranged in a quiet nook between massive volcanic boulders, right along Little Dix Bay Beach; a canopy of sea grape offers cover and allows guests to look out on the bright stars above. By candle light and tiki torch, guests will feast on a custom curated menu designed the day before in collaboration with Chef Ricardo. Dining connoisseurs will be captivated by the diversity offered in both the cuisine and these special locations. With such amenities available, Rosewood Little Dix Bay appears to be in leading position to take BVI patronage on a vacation experience that fulfils all desires. WHERE TO BUY IN THE BVI? Words by Lucienne Smith – Smiths Gore Photography courtesy of Renata Macrelli

Last BVI HomeSense feature, we looked at compelling reasons to invest

in property in the BVI. Once you have decided to invest here, the next big decision is where to buy in the BVI. The communities and neighborhoods on each of the islands have so much to offer. Here we provide a brief overview of the islands themselves and some of the locations that you could be calling home.

Virgin Gorda Virgin Gorda is only eight square miles and has a population of approximately 3,900. The tranquility makes you feel as if you are somewhere time has forgotten. There is a village feel with everyone finding the time to say hello or wave as you pass by. Virgin Gorda is positioned at the eastern extremity of the Virgin Islands and is divided into three areas: • The Valley: a mainly flat area at the southern end of the island where the majority of the population resides in Spanish Town. As well as the level terrain, the attraction is the spectacular beaches which include The Baths and Spring Bay. The rock formations of The Baths are striking and many home owners have incorporated these ancient structures into the architecture of the buildings themselves. • Nail Bay / Mahoe Bay and Savannah Bay:  Nail Bay is located below Gorda Peak, the highest point on the island, which rises to 1,370 ft above sea level. Development—mainly holiday and second homes—has been restricted to the coastal areas, including Mahoe Bay and Nail Bay on the west coast, again surrounded by wonderful beaches. • North Sound: North Sound has long been known as a yachting centre but in recent years it has undergone a significant transformation and has forged an identity as a luxury destination which competes with the best in the region. Residential developments around North sound include Oil Nut Bay, Blunder Bay, and Leverick Bay. At the far end of North Sound, you find Mosquito Island, which had a limited number of lots for sale, all of which are now sold.

Jost Van Dyke At roughly threee square miles, Jost Van Dyke lies about five miles to the northwest of Tortola and can be accessed via ferry /boat from Tortola. It has a growing population of around 300 and like many of the neighboring islands, it is volcanic in origin and mountainous. The highest point on the island is Majohnny Hill at just over 1,000 ft. The island is a true, unspoilt beauty and the most frequent destination is Great Harbour which has a beach area lined with small bars and restaurants. Located a short distance away is White Bay with a stunning beach and a growing array of bars, restaurants, and guest cottages. Among its wellknown bars is the Soggy Dollar Bar, appropriately named because it is a common practice for boaters to anchor off the beach, swim ashore, and then pay for their drinks with wet money. With great bars, great food, and great music, this is a magical island with some fantastic properties available for purchase.

Great Camanoe This is an island for boat owners as there is no ferry. Great Camanoe is a small, privately-owned island which at 2.5 square miles is completely unspoilt. Living here is a bit like being shipwrecked apart from the fact you are living in luxury and are only a short boat ride away from restaurants, shops, and bars – it is simply idyllic. It has two residential areas: Indigo Plantation Estate and Privateer’s Bay Estate. Indigo Plantation is a secluded residential estate which offers complete privacy and designated dock space within the estate’s protected marina. Privateer’s Bay Estate is an established estate of 28 properties and includes a boat dock and a community area with a tennis court, beach, deck area, and boat yard workshop. The island is completely yours to explore. Residents use golf carts to move around, visiting one another for cocktails or to access two private beaches. Lee Bay is on the western side and has beautiful waters for swimming and snorkelling. Cam Bay is a National Park lending itself to lazy days with picnics and a good book. Although there are no commercial facilities on Great Camanoe, the island is close to mainland services including restaurants and a wide variety of amenities on Tortola and Beef Island. The Beef Island International Airport is only a few minutes away. Nearby are also Marina Cay, The Last Resort, and the new development of Scrub Island with its marina, restaurants, and shops.

Satellite Television Call for satellite internet services via VSAT, Inmarsat, Iridium, Globalstar & 4G.

Anegada Anegada is the most remote and the northerly of the British Virgin Islands, located approximately 13 miles north of Virgin Gorda. The island has an area of approximately 14 square miles and is a flat coral atoll with the highest point rising only 28 ft above sea level. The island is famed for Horseshoe Reef, which extends offshore to the east and which is the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean. This unique landscape gave Anegada its name which means ‘drowned land.’ Spectacular white sand beaches, clear waters, and the snorkelling are second to none. Island life is about fishing, diving, and enjoying the tranquility – and the famous lobster. There are a limited number of properties for sale but new opportunities do arise from time to time.

Other BVI Hideaways: The BVI archipelago has an abundance of remote cays and uninhabited and private islands, but there are a few other remote locations that offer residential opportunities. Scrub Island—just off the eastern tip of Tortola and overlooked by Great Camanoe—is a resort island with a select number of homes and condominiums for sale. Cooper Island, located approximately five miles to the south east of Tortola and accessible by boat has a boutique beach club situated at Manchioneel Bay on the North West coast of the island. Apart from the club, there are four private residences overlooking Manchioneel Bay.

…so the choice belongs to you.

Caribbean Jerk Lobster Dip No matter where in the world one can be found, the underlying premise behind any vacation or holiday is memories. We take photos, we seek adventurous excursions, and try new foods all in an effort to store the bank with exploits to retell. One of my favourite souvenirs are local recipes and ingredients from my travels. On board sailing and diving catamaran Lolalita, I enjoy introducing new flavours with a gourmet twist into the eternal memories of our guests. This recipe is especially great during the holidays – a perfect hors d’oeuvre to share with the ones you love.

Caribbean Jerk Lobster Dip 1-2 medium-to-large lobster tails Butter Minced garlic 8 oz cream cheese ½ cup sour cream Juice from ½ lemon 1 red onion, diced 1 handful sweet island basil, minced Local jerk seasoning Scotch Bonnet hot sauce Salt and pepper 4 sprigs green onion, diced With the lobster tails still in their shells, season the meat with garlic and butter. Grill until fully cooked and let come to room temperature. Remove lobster meat from the shell and dice into 1/2-inch pieces. In a large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese until soft; add in sour cream, lemon juice, red onion, basil, and lobster. Add jerk seasoning, hot sauce, salt, and pepper to taste. Serve in a large bowl and chill for at least an hour. Garnish with green onion and jerk seasoning and serve with crackers or tortilla chips. Serves 8

Restaurant dining is pure pleasure,

especially when the

entrée flavours are enhanced by the enjoyment of the hospitality received and the visually soothing surroundings. Now the winner of Virgin Islands Property & Yacht’s Readers’ Choice Awards Best BVI Restaurant for the second year in a row, Brandywine Estate Restaurant’s philosophy stands that cuisine taste, presentation, and restaurant atmosphere are equally significant. “We feel honoured to be recognised publicly by the BVI residents with this accolade again – and the international readers, as the voting system was so open this year. We are proud to be Readers’ Choice Best BVI Restaurant and look forward to defending our title again next year,” said Claudine Bourdon, manager of Brandywine Estate Restaurant, who served a selection of Chef Regis’ canapés during the event evening. Regis and Claudine Bourdon—head chef and manager—are a charismatic couple of culinary enthusiasts, as passionate about their food as they are to please their customers. Throughout the BVI, Brandywine has gained an outstanding reputation from the community and visitors for their impeccable service, warm hospitality, and delicious cuisine. “At Brandywine, you come for the experience,” said Chef Regis. “Everything plays a role – the music, lighting, views, ambience, service. The customer wants to see that you have made an effort for them, which is why I believe food presentation is equally as important as the taste.”

Brandywine offers an eclectic menu of French-inspired cuisine, changing constantly to keep guests intrigued yet maintaining favourites such as the lobster bisque, a creamy soup combing flavours to enhance the taste of the lobster in an modest way. “Regis works very hard to source and obtain the best ingredients possible and we think that really stands out in our dishes,” said Claudine, as her husband is able to order international requests for parties of all sizes who dine at the restaurant. The restaurant’s elegant interior presents fine-dining place settings with decor including three fish tanks of aquatic life found by Regis during his snorkelling expeditions, and the colourful artwork of the late Bernard Bourdon, Regis’ father, supplying a warm, family tone to the establishment. This Christmas will be extra special for Brandywine hosts, as the proud parents-to-be are elated to welcome a new member to the Bourdon household, adding to the warm, family atmosphere of the restaurant. With Studio One Salon & Spa

Time spent at a salon or spa is

relished as it is often a treat to pamper ourselves with a confidence-boosting fresh look. After catering to the British Virgin Islands community since January 17, 2014, Studio One Salon & Spa is proud to be widely recognised for their professional services, quality products, and welcoming hospitality. Nicoleta Bongarth, head cosmetologist and co-owner of Studio One, along with owners Eileen Bourke and Che Pemberton, were delighted to be chosen by the community as the third Best BVI Health & Spa at Virgin Islands’ Property & Yacht’s Readers’ Choice Awards 2015. “We really appreciate how many clients voted for Studio One. I’m very thankful that in only two years, our hard work has paid off and we have established a name for ourselves by building a positive reputation,” said Nicoleta. Nicoleta is the floor manager, skilled in hair, cosmetology, and aesthetics, with Eileen and Che working behind the scenes conducting the marketing and administration respectively.

The Studio One team also includes Julia Rusu, a multi-talented hair stylist, make-up artist and aesthetician, who has received unique training in

television and specialty make-up. Suelyn Parkinson is a registered massage therapist and has been working at the studio since its opening, having received training in how to provide indulgent deep tissue and hot stone massages, as well as manicures and pedicures. New to the Studio One team, Kathryn greets their customers with a smile as the main receptionist, training to be Nicoleta’s assistant. Several times a year, Nicoleta and the staff travel internationally to shows and workshops to stay ahead of the latest trends. “It is very important to train, because in our business there is always something new offered. We want to offer our customers services and products they can’t find in the BVI,” said Nicoleta. In summer 2015, Julia returned to her home country to become qualified in 3D micro pigmentation- semi-permeant make-up—the only salon/spa to offer this service in the BVI—and five star porcelain spoon facial treatments. “Recently during a conference in the United States, Studio One acquired Hair BTX- a revolutionary treatment that uses botanical ingredients to makes the hair manageable, strong and frizz free,” said Nicoleta. In addition to the exclusive services, the salon also takes pride in providing a unique client experience with a homely atmosphere. “The team at Studio One is like a family, and clients feel this vibe. We provide a happy ambience; we are happy working in our jobs and happy to make clients happy,” said Nicoleta with a smile. Over the holiday season, Studio One welcome new clients and encourage existing patrons to take advantage of their winter customer appreciation specials. They also invite the community to celebrate their 2nd anniversary on 17 January, 2016 with new promotions and exciting offerings as the salon continues to grow.
