CONCEPT & OBJECTIVE

Given my performance throughout the MArch at the UPC, one of my professors (PhD candidate Jordi Portal) from Portal + Palluel Heritage Architecture based in Barcelona, invited me to join the firm and collaborate in the development for a chapel inside the iconic Santa Maria del Mar Basilica (SMM).

- Reactivate original use - Attract visitors - Contrast the neoclassical style - Ethereal wrapping with mystic lighting - Minimal presence of liturgic objects - Central table used as a radial altar

I was left in charge to materialize and bring to life the initial concept envisioned by the studio. I fulfilled their intuition with a touch of mine. The 1790’s Neoclassical Chapel (made by Francesc Vila) is located annexed at the back of the Basilica’s apse. It experienced a descent in activity which lead for it to be used as a storage unit in present times. Fortunately the new administration decided to reactivate its original use by commissioning the space, looking for a fresh and attractive intervention for visitors and the congregation.

PARTICIPATION - Concept development - 3D modeling - Construction details - Archviz - Presentation design - Furniture/object design lead - Architectural photography

The Chapel’s apse remains as a small storage unit blocked by a purple separation wall, allowing the rest of the space to adapt into a new radial configuration as opposed to the original linear one. The minimalistic approach searches to contrast the dense decoration of the neoclassical style against a clean textile mesh lit from the bottom up to create a mystic yet contemporary ambiance of transparencies. The wrapping of the mesh circles around the internal perimeter, enclosing a central table which also serves as an altar. The furniture is composed by a prefabricated cross, tabernacle and podium made out of brass, recycled acrylic, tubular frames, wood and lighting fixtures. The materials offer a remembrance for precious relics and sacred artifacts, plus the levity of a holy space. All elements are demountable if necessary in the future, meaning the intervention is harmless to the existing building by being retractable.

Barcelona 2021 The modern-vestige relics float behind the skin mesh presenting themselves as religious apparitions materialized with fine craftsmanship to grant a sense of preciousness, ethereality and mysticism.

The conceptual proposal, aesthetics, details and presentation design were beneficial for the firm to land the commission and is now under construction. The iPhone photographs show the precision and successful construction details used to install the project. The furniture and objects are still under manufacture.

REALISM RENDER

CONCEPT & OBJECTIVE

Recommended directly from Jordi Portal I was introduced to Kevin O’Leary, head of KOArchitecture in their second office in Barcelona City. They design and build luxury houses around the Seattle Area.

- Realism - Composition - Minimalism - Nature - Dusk and Snowy atmospheres - Low entourage

The project constituted visualizing different angels from the exterior and the interior throughout different moments of the days and the seasons around the year. The materiality responds to the climate and environment surrounded by the wetlands, thus giving us vegetations such as the weeping willow tree or the salix babylonica. The first one shows the dusk atmosphere where the sun is not so bright anymore and you can start appreciating the glow of the exterior lamps.

PARTICIPATION - Concept development - 3D modeling - Architectural visualization - Architectural photography

Then a sunny spring morning time where the aire is fresh and pure. The thrid is a rare moment of sunlight peaking after a heavy snowy storm. Finally the same snowy atmosphere but without the sunlight, is feels even colder and raw. All the images represent a scene of a housewarming pary with a bbq in the terrace, people arriving and leaving at the garage and a lush vegetation hugging the buildings.

03 Project: Mavero Medical Solutions

Client: Hospital General de México

Location: Mexico City, Mexico

Year: 2017

Area: 84m 2

Typology: Healthcare

Status: Completed

Healing Spaces

CONCEPT & OBJECTIVE

Invited by the HHRR team inside Mavero’s administration, I had the opportunity to join them by directing the architecture healthcare branch commercialized from Poland to Mexico. Mavero sells a broad range of medical technologies. From surgical utensils, cosmetics, prosthetics, and fully equipped operating rooms.

- 1st hybrid operating room in Mexico - Modernize with latest technology - Design and coordinate installation - Baby Blue wall panels - Lead radiation crystal fixture - 2 month span to complete installation -Promote and sell product/service

I was left in charge a team in order to design, communicate and engage with existing and potential clients. Hospital General de México is the largest public healthcare facility in the country with 944 beds. There was a bidding competition won by Mavero’s Founder Ing. Piotr Pawel Malinowski, who personally supervised my work. They were in need to modernize and update their surgery area. The design- build project consisted on a 84m2 hybrid operating room. A hybrid OR means it has a built in angiograph or x-ray imaging machine installed inside.

PARTICIPATION - Chief of Architecture Branch - 3D modeling - Construction details - Archviz - Presentation design and speaker - Supplier and client relations - Exhibition design for MedTech congress - 300sqmtr approx. of landed OR’s

The technology shipped from Poland, crafted and custom built, gets installed with milimetric precision to ensure the vacuum of the room doesn’t let bacteria in or out the OR. As part of the communications strategy we pitched clients the idea to modernize their OR’s adding a wallpaper to appease both the patients coming in for surgery and the staff itself. We showed the possibility of a screen wall and its academic-emergency applications. In this regard we also offered them branding services to renew their corporate image. The benefits of applying modular panels and aluminum structures is that everything is demountable easily for maintenance, relocating and speed of installation. In order to build a successful OR it needs first hand communication with other top market brands included in a project.

04 Project: Dinsmoor Acapulco & Otto Bar

Client: Grupo Classico (Díaz Brothers)

Location: Acapulco City, MEX

Year: 2015 - 2017

Area: 700m2

Typology: Bar- Nightclub

Status: Completed

This is the Rythm of the Night...clubs

CONCEPT & OBJECTIVE

My freelance endeavor was launched by friends in common introducing me with the clients to be. Grupo Classico has been leading the nightlife scene with the most exclusive bars around the finest neighborhoods in Mexico City and others around the country. They create 300 people bars that adapt every 6 months to one year. This ever changing experience for the overnighters is what keeps the interest to visit the venues and enjoy parties with inspiring designs.

- “Infinity” abstraction as design imperative for Dinsmoor Polanco - “Sea” abstraction as design imperative for Dinsmoor Acapulco - “Prehispanic” abstraction as design imperative for Otto Bar -Create unique spaces to enjoy the night

The first project was a competition in which I faced senior architectural teams in between five entries. The clients selected mine basing their decision on my spoken-graphic presentation and design originality. The persuasion continued as I gave them different configurations to choose from. They also appreciated the numbers showcased for the business plan and further agreement.

PARTICIPATION

This successful initiation granted me two following direct invitations to create another one in Mexico City and an extra in the legendary beach city of Acapulco in the State of Guerrero, MX. At this point they didn’t ask me to compete or to follow a concept but always to create it from scratch. There for I was granted full creative autonomy to explore volumes, textures, light and sound bounces.

- Direct business relationship with clients - Business plan and agreement - Design & construction - Team creation and job delegation - Project quality control and delivery - Post delivery customer follow-up

After one week of inaugurating Otto they upgraded the audio system due to the increased sonar experience created by crafted wood panels and wool wall curtains. I was in charge of every aspect of the project. From conceptual to furniture, light design, etcetera backed with their respective construction documents. Further supervision and delivery was sewn upon. On this period of time I was overlapping my employment as Chief of the Architecture Branch within healthcare company Comercializadora MAVERO, which meant a great deal of organizational skills, team making, job delegation, client interaction, supplier follow-up and so on.

05 AHX Project: Abud Country House

Client: Gabriel Abud Urquiza & Family

Location: Michoacán, Mexico

Year: 2020

Area: 1500m2

Typology: Luxury Residential

Status: Under Contruction

FOREST FREedOM

CONCEPT & OBJECTIVE

Requested by Gabriel Abud, I had the opportunity to design his family’s weekend country house in Los Azufres Area in Michoacan State, MX. Approximately 3 hours west-north from Mexico City.

- Weekend retreat manor - “Orthogonal” design imperative - Local stone for artesanal manufacture - Spacey lounge for gathering - Plenty of rooms for family and guests - Exterior/interior natural lighting and views interactions

The only project request made by the clients was for it to have orthogonality for the design imperative and local stone and wood as the main materiality. Given the large family and friends gathering it was necessary to contemplate a lot of space. It consists on a three storie bedroom settled on the A wing and a public use B wing connected by a corridor on the lower floor and a bridge on the first level. The house is located in the middle of the forest high up in the mountains, being privileged to enjoy an intensely changing forest climate. Given the altitude the local rock will help trap the sunlight to then release it at night for heat efficiency.

PARTICIPATION - Conceptual & design lead development - 3D modeling - Archviz - Construction site supervision - Design changes consultant

The dreamy ambiance created on the rigid volume is created by a game of light infiltrations and sahdows which separate each roof from their walls, creating all around a direct contact with the exterior.

06 Project: Factory to Market

Client: Sentmenat Townhall

Location: Sentmenat, Barcelona

Year: 2019

Area: 3000m2

Typology: Heritage - Academic

Status: Idea

market mutation

CONCEPT & OBJECTIVE

As part of the MArch program we were asked individually to develop the intervention of a building, I got an abandoned factory one hour away from Barcelona city.

- Heritage adaptive reuse & refurbishment - Usage change - Local needs - Research of cultural and architectural/ structural features - Presentation to local town hall

The exercise consisted on investigating all aspects around the factory, its history, the culture and anthropological use and architectural/structural features. All of the previously mentioned throughout a specific time line, phase by phase. After the historical and cultural overview I had to go in situ to discover the main pathologies the building was suffering and graphically represent them in order to know what it needed to be done. The main objective was to refurbish the building, and on the same action change its original usage of textile factory to a local market given the agricultural activities on its surroundings.

PARTICIPATION - Conceptual & design lead development - Comprehensive 3D modeling - Construction documentation - Historical research - Town hall presentation

The mutation also undertook urban qualities as it connected the neighboring park and the small plaza which contains the town limits.
