At the Hulbert Outdoor Center, we have always been serious—like all Aloha programs—about the quality and impact of our work. We have always focused on sharing Aloha values, our connection to the outdoors, developing leadership skills, and fostering healthy communities.

In 2012, we got serious about broadening our impact to communities beyond the Alohas.

leaders take these lessons one step further by learning about organizations in their own communities that are working to improve the lives of people.

Hulbert leaders help them contemplate how they might effectively join the effort. They return to their schools ready to teach and lead their peers in new community development projects.

For most students, approaching leadership by talking about how to motivate, encourage, listen, and understand people is challenging and new. Supporting them to use those ideas in a real-world context gives them the confidence to expand their own impact and sense of themselves.

We asked ourselves how—if we were serious—would we help students take what they learn at Hulbert into the world with them? The answer was our new Success Leadership program, a skillful confluence of existing Hulbert programming and an innovative educational leadership curriculum.

Hosted at Hulbert, we knew we could send students home with important new skills and on a mission—to transform their home communities in meaningful ways.

Hulbert’s Success Leadership Program for middle school students brings student teams and teacher mentors to Hulbert for teambuilding, leadership development, and beginning lessons in The Aloha Foundation’s Success Counseling Model. Student

“Your staff treated our students like their own children. They went above and beyond to give our students every opportunity to experience new things. We have done other programs and yours was by far the best.”

It’s 7:25 am in the Hulbert dining room and Erin Gerrity is working with a team of seventh graders setting the tables for one hundred diners. It is the first lesson of the day as they consider what it’s like to live and work in a community. With Erin’s guidance and skills—honed at Camp Aloha—the group is energetic and focused.

Down by the water, Tori Sumner is leading a boating lesson with the same safe and challenging atmosphere as the lessons she delivers at Lanakila each summer.

Hulbert began with the knowledge that its staff would contribute a variety of skills and supports to our summer programs. And today, 18 of our 22 program staff are also connected to one of Aloha’s summer programs. That continuity of spirit is reflected in the care and energy that our instructors bring to their work every day.

Hulbert staff have a combined total of 209 years of experience at the Aloha Foundation (nine people have 10 years or more), represent five countries, and hold degrees in education, environmental studies, philosophy,

psychology, journalism, history, social work, politics, english, sociology, sports science, and biology. Among them are department heads and unit heads from Aloha, Lanakila, and Horizons. Their varied perspectives form a Hulbert community that is rich and diverse, enabling them to create programs that are exciting and tailored to the needs of their group.

Hulbert staff author their curriculum collaboratively and adjust their teaching according to abilities, interests, and personalities. It is a challenging and rewarding job that takes skill, flexibility, creativity, and a great sense of fun.

Where else might one be engaged in the weighty work of educating youth in a manner so different from traditional educational settings.

As staff member Charlotte Bryan puts it, “I laugh every day and I get to carry around a rubber chicken and pool noodles for my job. Who else gets to do that?”

Wisdom is shared and handed down so readily, and that is how the Camps sustain their strong traditions!

Getting Serious about Leadership

here at the Alohas. What a privilege it was to watch these students teach their peers new skills, encourage them to get involved, and speak passionately about how they could all make a difference.

Now in its fourth year, Success Leadership continues to hear from schools that this program has helped give their students the confidence to seek leadership roles and effectively create positive communities. Now that is serious progress!

With a history of successful programs that last for an entire summer, we wondered whether Success Leadership could have an impact in three days.

Would the students remember and use what they had learned? We are thrilled to say that our pilot programs appear to be a resounding success!

Recently, we visited one school to support them as they initiated their community projects. We were excited to see a bulletin board about Hulbert.

Praise for Hulbert Outdoor Center Hulbert Essential to School Year Program JEFF CLARK L83-85,*86 Head of Clark School in Rowley, Massachusetts

When the Clark School was founded in 1978, we had six students and one teacher. In an effort to come up with new and exciting programs, founder Sharon Clark discovered a small and experiential program called the Hulbert Outdoor Center. At that time, it was very different than the program Hulbert has today. Children slept in the dining room, and we ate on the porch.

We arrived at Hulbert in early December and participated in snowshoeing and camouflage in the winter wonderland of Fairlee. The program ended on Friday and parents joined us for a family weekend. What made Hulbert so special was the intimate relationship that the students developed with the instructors. Students learned more about themselves, the counselors and developed better team-building skills.

The Clark School, which now has 146 students, has visited Hulbert every year since then. We have watched cabins and pirate ships being built, seen mountains climbed and witnessed the program grow along with our students. When I speak to parents during our admissions process, I allay their fears of taking their children away for a week by explaining that Hulbert is a magical place where the teachers are able to learn who the students really are and how they work together as a team. That very observation of teamwork has become a foundation for Clark as we progress through each year.

We continue to travel to Hulbert every year because of the openness and desire to improve the program that we have seen from the staff and directorship. We have exchanged recommendations and have watched this tiny program grow from a staff of four, to a large multi-cultured team of outdoor educators. I can confidently say that the Hulbert Outdoor Center is essential to our year-long program here at Clark School.

We have loved attending Family Camp in the past few years. Family Camp can help alumni introduce their partners and children—our next generation—to the camp experience. It's a fantastic way to become familiar with the setting, the people, and the traditions of camp in a low-key, friendly way. Both my husband and my brother's girlfriend were new to camp and had a wonderful time, and our infant and toddler will only further enjoy it as they grow a bit older. Having a structured, yet flexible week-long vacation can be so helpful for families who are looking to spend time together in a special place around all of our busy schedules. We liked it so much that we attended Winter Family Camp this past holiday season!

Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone with Hulbert TOMMY REYNOLDS, L99-04,*06-17,HOC*15-16 School Psychologist, York High School in York, Maine

This last November something amazing happened! I work at a high school in Maine and one of my coworkers wrote a grant to be able to take a group of our students to the Hulbert Outdoor Center.

Watching my students work with the Hulbert staff to step outside of their comfort zone and explore the concepts of perseverance, team-work, and healthy risk taking was amazing. Where my students were used to finding apprehension and doubt, at Hulbert they found inspiration to climb the ropes course. Where they were used to finding discipline, at Hulbert they found compassionate teaching. As school personnel, we had the opportunity to see our kids in a completely different light. As a result, we built the types of relationships that we know to be pivotal in creating a school climate of growth and success. I am so grateful to the Hulbert staff and our school program hopes to return again next year!

Hulbert Outdoor Center Year-long Programming CHRIS OVERTREE Executive Director, The Aloha Foundation

Throughout its history, the Hulbert Outdoor Center has been crucial to The Aloha Foundation’s mission for the nine months each year when our summer camps are not in session.

But what began as an effort to s-t-re-t-c-h has become so substantial, one could—almost—imagine the summer as the “off season.” Hulbert hosted for almost 300 days last year—so many that our buildings and grounds crew has nary a minute to hammer and paint without children underfoot.

And more importantly, Hulbert exemplifies the depth and breadth of the innovative educational programs The Aloha Foundation offers.

Many Hulbert programs are familiar translations of our core programming: family camps at the end of the summer and in the middle of winter; vacation camps for children who would otherwise languish at home while their parents work; homeschool programs for children to balance their more solitary educational environments with a thriving—and renewing—shared community each year.

Then there are the high-stakes, highlevel trainings and certifications that bring professionals to Hulbert to build and refine skills they need to support their own programs and participants— Wilderness First Aid, CPR, First Responder, EMT and other outdoor leadership opportunities.

Next, Hulbert immerses itself in the educational space, hosting more than 65 schools each year with a range of educational, community development and leadership programs—each custom designed for the school based on its identified needs and goals.

There are also more specialized activities, designed for populations that would otherwise be unable to experience the rich outdoor experience we provide—camps for children with rheumatoid arthritis, programs for our area’s migrant farm workers, and afterschool programs for children struggling with homelessness.

Hulbert is even a home-away-fromhome for groups that return every year to engage in professional development, conferences and business retreats, quilting workshops, and dance-and-ski weekends.

What an amazing, diverse, and transformative way to spend the year and how grateful we are to have Hulbert right here at home.

A Letter from the Executive Director Dear Friends, Gone are the days where Hulbert simply seeks to extend the summer season. Hulbert is now a powerhouse program, transforming the lives of more than 7,000 people yearly and operating in multiple sectors of the educational space. Inside this edition of our summer Reveille, you will learn more about some of Hulbert’s more innovative programs serving schools and communities in the Northeast.

Since 2012, Hulbert has grown by almost 12% per year, making it our 2nd fastest growing program (second to Ohana, which turns 10 this summer) and has done so in a manner that reflects back the same energy and enthusiasm we see in our summer programs. When our best staff seek out Hulbert to extend their training in the innovative educational space, something fantastic must be happening. Even more so when those same Hulbert staff return to our summer programs as key leaders.

Hulbert programs stand out because they compound over time and distance. When schools visit Hulbert to develop their leadership skills (see the article about Hulbert’s Success Leadership program), they return home and fan out into their school and local communities, with new skills and concrete objectives. When Hulbert creates new partnerships between classrooms and their local organizations that build a collective identity, what emerges is a shared vision of a safe and healthy community, and a strategy for achieving it.

How thrilled I am to share with you that Hulbert has expanded its reach and impact, while still accomplishing its original vision: to extend Aloha-inspired programming year-round and to bring children back to the simple transformative spaces.

We specialize in creating communities that inspire people to be their best selves. Hulbert has expanded this notion in new and exciting ways.

And here is the best part. Research tells us that being part of a healthy community is associated with other concrete outcomes like improved academic achievement, personal well-being, and physical health. We are proud to say that the glow that follows the end of another amazing Hulbert program is truly just the beginning!

Spreading the Word Did you know that 80% of our eligible campers choose to return to camp each summer? This is an excellent retention rate that demonstrates the positive—and often transformative—nature of the Aloha experience.

Yet despite our recruitment efforts to fill the 20% “new camper” spots in the past 10 years, we have not achieved full enrollment. While our 93% occupancy rate is impressive, finding our new campers takes the majority of our Directors’ resources and time during the off season. We are always looking for new families to join our community. Your cheerleading Horizons grads

and support make a huge difference in building new connections. We encourage you to keep talking to your friends and family about what makes Aloha unique—and tell us if you have any leads!

The closer to optimally full our Aloha Foundation camps and programs, the healthier our scholarship, or campership, program can be. Our vision is to grow camperships faster than tuition. In fact, in 2017, tuition increased by only 3% and camperships by a full 10%, a mission-related trend we would love to see continue.

Hive S torm Update At the beginning of March, we shared the news of the windstorm that blew through Hive, bringing down trees and tearing at roofs. How grateful we were that our talented and experienced buildings and grounds crew was on the scene ensuring Hive would open on schedule and look beautiful.

We are pleased to report Hive is fully recovered, with new trees, strengthened buildings, and a beautiful line of lilacs. With all the rain we have been having—and it has been a lot—the grass is taking root and will be ready to run through and lie on.

We are grateful for all of you who shared your support and believed in our resilience in the face of adversity.

Aloha Hive will be changing lives this summer just as it has since 1915. You can count on it!
