A GLIMPSE BETWEEN TWO WORLDS

Have you ever stood in one place and imagined the very same place, but at a completely different time, in a completely different season? Maybe you’ve stood on an empty field or in a stadium, and pictured the stands full and raucous while players compete to win the big game. Or maybe you’ve encountered a very crowded park or swimming area only to imagine having the whole place to yourself.

Winter is a magical time on the Horizons campus. We are able to see a glimpse between two worlds: one in which an almost eerie quiet breaks as the ground crunches beneath a pair of snow boots, and another where the familiar structures remind us of the bustle and vibrance that can never really be gone from this place even in the off season. As caretakers responsible for this place, there is much for us to do here in winter, too.

There are structures that need to be shoveled and kept from winter wear; plants and trees including new oak and maple saplings by the Pack Out Barn that need to be protected from the wind and weight of the snow.

There are also longer-term projects that take place between seasons. We’ve taken down the old changing rooms in order to build an eco-friendlier structure, farther from the wetlands, allowing the bank to hold together and filter a more natural runoff for the benefit of all the lake’s inhabitants.

We look forward to the warmer months when we will welcome you back with excitement and open arms. And when you arrive and notice the improvements and changes to camp, we invite you to close your eyes and imagine the snow-white blanket that will have only recently left this place and know that it has spent the winter preparing to share itself especially with you.
