Hello Hivers! I can’t wait to connect with you all in new ways throughout the summer. I’d like to kick off this great issue of The Buzz by introducing you to…drumroll please… Ellie Pennell, the new Director of Hive! Ellie has been a Hive counselor for seven years — some of you may remember her as our Assistant Director last year. I’d Kathy Plunkett love for you to get to know Ellie Director of Aloha Hive better, and I thought an interview would be a perfect way to do that. I hope you enjoy learning more about her. She is really looking forward to seeing you all at camp in the future. In the meantime, here’s Ellie!
One thing that excites me about camp is…
Good Afternoon, Ellie, I am excited to sit and talk with you. I am going to ask you some questions so our campers and counselors can get to know you a bit before they arrive at camp.
What things should we know about you?

2) Even though I love all the excitement and fun of camp, I also like peace and quiet sometimes.
Where do you live when you are not at camp? I live about an hour south of camp in Rockingham, Vermont, with my husband and 3 kids. Do you have a pet; what kind and name? How did you decide on the name? I do! My dog’s name is Teddy. We adopted him from our local Humane Society and he looks like a combination of a Golden Retriever and a yellow Lab. Teddy was originally named Abe, but we didn’t think the name fit him very well. My nephew suggested Theodore or Teddy, for short. It suits our Teddy perfectly! What 3 things do you look for in friends? 1. Authenticity 2. Integrity 3. Great sense of humor/playfulness
The pranks! I love a well-planned, fun prank that includes lots of people and gets everyone laughing. One thing I am worried about is... nowing the right way and time to do all the Director-y K things. Like when and how to start Friendship Circle or the order of events at Rainbow’s End, that kind of stuff. Things I’ll figure out, but I’m not 100% sure about yet. Two things I am good at… 1) Lettering (aka pretty handwriting) 2) Building fires Two things I want to be better at… 1) Sailing 2) Identifying stars & constellations 1) I am generally pretty neat and organized, but I have my messy and wild side too.
3) I adore hugs. Giving and getting. What have you been doing while at home these past few months? Lots of Zoom meetings getting to know and begin working with my new colleagues!

Gardening at my son’s school, trying out lots of new recipes to cook and bake with my daughter, playing card games (Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza — a new favorite) and lots of long walks. Thank you, Ellie! The Hive community and I are thrilled to welcome you, this summer and many more to come. Thank you, Kathy! Looking forward to being back at camp together next summer!

Department Time
Hive is abuzz with activity during department times every summer as campers learn new skills, set goals, take chances, laugh, create, and work together. How might you recreate a department activity at home?
Arts & Crafts Last summer in Arts & Crafts, Hive campers and counselors worked together to make over 1000 paper cranes and wrote wishes on them at our endof-summer Banquet. Would you like to try making cranes at home? Here’s how to do it:

Life in the Exploring department is about creating forts, human-sized nests, and fairy houses. It’s about discovering clay in our stream, getting messy, finding Voldemort in the woods on Harry Potter Day, pranking Wilderness, talking to everyone’s favorite Ant, and lending shoes to the swamps who need them. Every day is a new adventure!

Canoeing Summer ’19 we learned to canoe, J-stroked and drew as our skills grew, Fit in a kayak more than a few. Windstorms & raindrops we paddled through, And YOLO boarded when skies were blue. Boats wait all winter, it’s true, Through the ice and snow too, To return to the lake in 2021 with Hivers like you!

Last summer, to celebrate Tennis and Landsports becoming one department, we played a crossover game called Hockis! The game is played on the tennis court with hockey sticks, a tennis ball, and goals on each side. Each team tries to get the ball into the other’s goal, but the ball can only go over or under the net, not around! We can’t wait to play again next summer, and to come up with more wacky games to try out!
PA is a safe space to be goofy, explore your different personalities in the costume room, take new risks, use your imagination, be in a play, learn a new instrument, write your own poems, songs, or plays, play ridiculous drama games, do an act in the talent show, learn how to work hard on something you are passionate about, and so much more! Whether you have never set foot in a theatre or touched an instrument, or if you are a seasoned actor and a prolific writer, PA is the place for you to explore, learn, make new friends, and have an AMAZING TIME!!! We can’t wait to meet you and hang out!

Looking for a sweet treat to transport your taste buds back to days spent baking and creating in the Hive Ka’oma, or to get you excited for the baking adventures next summer? Lupin’s Lunar Cookies were made at camp last summer on Harry Potter Day, and they’re one of Palmer’s favorite family recipes!

Method: 1. Beat butter until whipped 2. Beat in powdered sugar til the dough 3. Add flour a little at a time un ped clumps together and can be sha pes 4. Form dough into crescent sha 5. Insert a clove into each cookie es 6. Bake at 300•F for 25-30 minut kies when cool 7. Sift powdered sugar over coo 8. Remove clove before eating! Happy Baking!

Hive @ Home
I am knitting a blanket! I have to use really thick needles and I had to double up my yarn to be able to make it correctly. I love to knit because it calms me, if I’ve had a stressful day (which is happening a lot right now). It is always nice for me at the end of the day to sit down and knit for a bit. Alex Lowenstein I love baking, especially muffins, cakes, and tarts. I particularly enjoy baking because it sets aside time to connect with family members. Here, I am baking muffins with my sister. I like watching my dogs play outside. They like to roll around in the grass and chase each other. Lily Danforth I have been working on my Rubik’s Cube skills and have learned how to solve the 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5 cube! Attached is a picture of me with the 5x5 cube. Try Something New! These campers tried some new things last summer and are looking forward to having new experiences this summer and at Hive 2021. Even though we won’t be at camp, they can still achieve their goals, just maybe in new ways! What do YOU want to try this summer? My favorite place on Hive property is Rainbow’s End. I love Rainbow’s End because it’s a very peaceful and fulfilling place. I get to sing some of my favorite songs. When you are walking up Aloha hill and you get to the top, then you finally start walking to Rainbow’s End, there is a feeling that comes over me saying this is a safe place. Taryn Harris

Meet Our New Counselors
These awesome people were ready to spend their first summer at Hive this year. Let’s get to know them a bit so we can give them the best welcome when we meet them in summer 2021!
Ciara Macdonald Hometown: Steep, Hampshire, England During the year she’s: Studying math in college You can find her: On the Swimming docks Identifies herself as: A Ravenclaw Has a sweet tooth for: Chocolate ice cream or a sticky toffee dessert Ciara went to camp as a kid but has never been to the U.S. before so she was excited to be in a new place, living outside and getting out of her comfort zone. During her recent weeks at home, Ciara has been doing school online, going on runs through the countryside and sewing face masks on her sewing machine. She even learned how to make sourdough bread. YUM!
Alexis Attard Hometown: Chicago During the year she’s: Studying computer science and 3-D animation You can find her: Taking photos all over camp Identifies herself as: Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff mix Has a sweet tooth for: Apple-cinnamon bread Alexis has never been to a camp before and was looking forward to getting to know campers, and maybe sharing a bit of her love for guitar and piano, as well as doing some appearances in arts & crafts. During this time inside, Alexis has been with her dad and stepmom in Los Angeles where she’s been skateboarding, journaling and, of course, keeping up with schoolwork.
Kinsale Steedman Hometown: Falmouth, MA During the year she’s: Starting college at Hofstra University, studying music education You can find her: Sailing around Lake Fairlee Identifies herself as: A Ravenclaw Has a sweet tooth for: Coffee Oreo ice cream Kinsale grew up going to camp, too. She loves any and all music-related things, as she’s in two a cappella choirs and has a goal of becoming a high school choir director. While at home, Kinsale painted her room and has been going on lots of bike rides. She’s enjoyed doing puzzles with her sisters and spending time with her pup.

Campers and counselors come from all over the world to spend the summer on Lake Fairlee. Even though we won’t be physically together this summer, it’s still cool to know that we have friends in so many places, all searching for ways to bring a little Hive to their homes, until we meet again.

Just like we say ‘thank you’ and other words to tell people how much we appreciate them at camp, we can do that for people in our local communities, as well. Choose an essential business (hospitals, nursing homes, grocery stores, restaurants, mail centers etc.) in your town to send an encouraging note to, or write one to a hospital near camp.
