Hello Hivers! I hope you are as excited as I am to read this edition of the Buzz. Reading your memories, the memories of counselors, and looking at all the beautiful photographs of our summer gives me a slice of camp right here in my living room. My mind drifts back to summer days we all spent together learning, growing and having so much fun — it fun — it conjures so many of the things I love about camp: • I love Rainbow’s End because I get to sit quietly with you all. We dream about the week we just had and think about all the ways we could be better in the coming week week — be — be a better friend, work on a new rank, and more.
remembering Who you are at camp will help you be the person you want to be at school, home, and in your communities. • I love walking and talking with you all on our way to a meal, rest hours, or activities. In these moments I get to know each of you better. • I love assembly because we get to sing our hearts out. When we sing together it brings us together as a community through music.
• I love meals with you all all — we — we get to meet new friends, sing new songs and always try to come up with a great “QUESTION OF THE DAY!” • I love tattoo tattoo — my — my favorite bugle call at camp. The long-lasting melody is what brings you back to your tent family to bring another day of camp to an end with thoughtful conversations where we get to hear how each person is doing, how we can applaud them, and how we can support each other in the coming days. I know as I read through the Buzz, I will find more memories that will make me smile and think, “Yes, I love that about camp too!” Now, I am curious what you would add to this list? Be well and keep your wonderful camp self and all your memories close to your heart throughout the winter winter — remembering — remembering who you are at camp will help you be the person you want to be at school, home, and in your communities. What’s your favorite word or phrase that you hear a lot at camp?

I hope you are all having a wonderful fall. I miss you and often find myself thinking about the summer we had, especially whenever I walk by blueberries in the grocery store. The other day I was at the bookstore and stumbled upon the book that Ellie Pennell read to us on our second night, What Do You Do With A Chance by Kobi Yamada. We talked about the chance that you took to come to camp, but you didn’t stop taking chances then. Some of you took chances to swim in the lake for the first time, others to go sailing, and two of you tasted your first s’mores. You took a chance by learning new songs, coming up with pranks for your counselors, and even trying scrambled pancakes on our overnight with the Lolanders. I hope you continue to take chances in your everyday life back at home. Do you still have your ‘bots’ that we made with Kathy? Whenever I see my bot I think about some of the chances I took at camp and what chances I can take now. I hope to see you all next summer and I can’t wait to see what chances you will take!

Buzz from Hivers Near and Far! I’ve started pre-team gymnastics. My other new hobby is begging Mom for a chinchilla. I doubt she’ll let me get one! Eliza ‘Benny’ Benware I’ve been having a lot of fun with my friends but I sure miss my Hiver friends. My Mom took me to camp today and I got to go swimming. We walked up to the garden on Aloha Hill and I got to run around in the woods. I smelled so many smells from the summer. Can’t wait to see you back next summer! Smooch
After camp I went trekking on the Appalachian trail and slept in the huts and had showers in the cold Zealand falls with my family and friends! School has started and summer is over in Milan but Ana Lamoso is coming to visit us soon and I am really excited!!! I hope to see Gwen soon.
After camp I went to Disneyland Paris with my dance class and performed on stage. It was very exciting and an amazing experience. Disneyland was a lot of fun! Sophia Pashley
Luce Ruffato This year, I decided to take up trumpet. Slowly, I have progressed, and I joined the school band. I am hoping to be a bugler at camp next summer! Harper Lewis
I recently started middle school and I am trying to start a Girls Who Code club at my school. I think a lot of inspiration came from the community of girls at camp.

LOLANDERS! What’s buzzing?? Do you remember the wish you wrote on your paper crane at Banquet? I wrote to bring my camp-self to school, and to make things happen! When was the last time you felt your camp-self shining through? Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of silly things, like acting in a TV show about chefs during the zombie apocalypse, teaching my friends American Sign Language and camp games like WAH and Bob the Weasel, rowing in rainbow outfits at crew practice, and playing lots of music! Last night, I took out my trombone and played Taps for my entire college. You guys are definitely better at respecting Taps, haha! Sometimes in class I drift off and I think about how much fun we had on our overnight in the Halekipa, with a guest appearance from Snappy! I miss you all very much. When was the last time you tried something new? I am taking a yodeling class. Here is a joke for you: Knock knock! Who’s there? Yodeylay hee. Yodelay hee who?

Some of my favorite memories from our summer together are from unit time and from swim lessons. I always loved unit time because it was a chance to get to know all of you amazing Lolanders. I especially enjoyed doing a trash bag fashion show. You are all so creative! Teaching swim lessons was a part of my summer that I really enjoyed because my swampers amazed me every day and were so willing to work on their swimming skills this summer. Lolanders!! Hello from the Netherlands. I may be far away from Hive now, but I have kept my memories of our summer very close. I remember all the fun games we played as a unit. The pruey game and the WAH game — my favorite!! I love that game and the faces when someone forgot to say ‘WAH’. I miss doing these things with all of you. I also loved the moments when we were sitting down next to the seesaws and made friendship bracelets with each other. And I am still doing it at home! After camp I went on a short trip to Martha’s Vineyard. On Martha’s Vineyard my mom and I went to the annual illumination night. Illumination night is when people on the island put up lanterns around their houses and when the sun goes down the community turns their lanterns on and you can walk around and look at them. While I was looking at lanterns I happened to run into the Anti-Q Jane Darman. We got to talk and catch up. It was nice to see a familiar camp face. Melat Asher

Happy fall, Dolphins! I hope you’re all having a fabulous school year so far and that you’re keeping Hive in your hearts. Sometimes when I’m walking to class here in Vermont I pretend that I’m walking to assembly, or Landsports, or Rainbow’s End, or to the dining hall for a grilled cheese lunch. Every time I try something new at college, like hiking Mount Philo or meeting a new friend, I remind myself to be vulnerable. Do you remember meeting your tent family on Opening Day, or making up skits in Narnia? We all chose to be vulnerable this summer, in small moments and big ones. Whether it was showing up to Hive for the first time ever or asking for help in Arts & Crafts, I was so proud of each and every one of you. Thanks for a great summer of smelly jinxes and underwear parties, Dolph Dolphs of 2019. Keep being your best wonderfully silly selves and I can’t wait for another best summer ever next year! Aloha, Kate Dolphiiiiins — Assemble! *clap, fin!* As I sit here thinking about our incredible unit last summer, I’m immediately brought back to our adventures journeying through the mysterious portal in the license plate grove first half,
learning and performing our Banquet song second half, and everything in between! You all brought so much energy, excitement, curiosity, warmth, bravery, and kindness to each moment. I’m so proud of the community we created together. To all of you, I hope you are having tons of fun, learning a lot, and working hard to be the best version of yourself possible. (I know I am!) Aloha! Gwen Sadie Hellooo DolphDolphs! As the weather finally starts to get chilly here in Maryland, I can’t help but think back to our warm, sometimes hot and sweaty, days in the Dell. Remember when you all worked together to build that massive barricade around the Dell to welcome the midis and a few other dolphin counselors back after our day off? I suppose that was fair revenge for all of the midi mischief that occurred on Candy Day this summer! I am so lucky to have spent time around such creative and passionate women like yourselves. And speaking of creativity, I will certainly be building my very own “D8 haunted hospital” as Halloween is quickly approaching! Aloha! Maddie Schattenfield
Dear Hilanders, Last week I spent an afternoon at Hive, wandering all over. Of course, it looks very different right now with the leaves turning, the tent flaps taken down, the swim docks taken in, and most of the buildings closed up. It’s still incredibly beautiful, but it made me miss you all and wish I could instantly have you all back with me. And that got me thinking…if all 97 Hilander campers and counselors from 2019 instantly arrived back at Hive, could we survive the fall together? The answer is obviously YES, and here’s how: • Because of the Hilander Project, we have the skills to string up tarpaulins ourselves, build our own furniture, and maintain fires to keep us warm and cook our meals. • It gets dark earlier now, but darkness on the hillside is no problem for the 1st session Hilanders, who’ve shown that they can navigate the property sneakily in the middle of the night without issue. • Fall could mean hungry bears in the area bulking up for hibernation, but we know the 2nd session Hilanders will be able to mount a very strong defense with their catapult-operating skills!
• We have campers who achieved ranks in just about every department this summer — we’re a group with so many talents.

• Most importantly, we’re a community that has shown that we can support each other, overcome challenges with persistence and teamwork, adapt to new situations, laugh loudly, and love greatly. Okay, so maybe my dream of instantly having you all back here isn’t totally realistic, but I love knowing that you’re putting much of what we learned together this summer to use in your other communities all across the globe. My standout memories from our Hilander summer together would have to be sneaking around camp at quite a late hour on a very specific mission (unfortunately I cannot disclose any further information) and being well and truly surprised to hear reveille on Hive’s Birthday in the middle of our counselor meeting (they don’t tell us counselors absolutely everything!)
One of my absolute favorite memories from the summer was going on a canoe breakfast with my shack family. With seven of us, we had to take two canoes! And of course I was the one who dropped the fruit in the lake (don’t worry - it was rescued!) Of course my favorite whole unit memory is The Hilander Project! Baby you’re a firework…;)

Hello Anti-Q campers & counselors of 2019!
Anti-Qs! This past summer in the Anti-Q unit we were fortunate to I can’t believe we are moving into have an incredible community. You winter now. It makes me miss the 12-year-old girls showed so much sunny afternoons on the shores of courage, bravery, and kindness the Lake Fairlee. I keep thinking back to entire summer. News from Counselors
Right after camp I was able to spend time with a few Hivers: Laura Bisbee-Slade, Tammy Airey, Lydia Bowen, Eden Liddel, and Palmer. About a week after Closing Day, I entered my first year at Oberlin College and I have been loving it. It reminds me of camp, and the independence I have learned through my years as a camper and counselor has been really helpful for my transition into college! Maggie Elsen

Some favorite memories from Summer 2019... My favorite memory of the summer is when I passed my swim check. Emily Pastrana I have so many great memories from Hive but there is one that I will always remember. I was on the show overnight when we were told we had to go back due to bad weather. We all got in the vans and went back to Hive. When we got back to Hive we were told that it was Hive’s Birthday. Everyone was excited! When Reveille played we got to see everyone run down the hill. My favorite memory from camp was when my tent family and our neighbor tent family went on our overnight to Winships at Aloha. Oh my goodness, that was the longest hike, especially with a water jug, food, and a griddle. However, once we got up the hill the view was breathtaking...looking over Lake Morey and the sunset . I have many favorite memories from the summer but one of my favorites is definitely the Hilander Project. Mainly because I got to know so many new people and I will always remember flying potatoes. Since I left camp I have been getting back into the swing of things for my third year of college. I have been showing new freshman and fellow Hive counselor Cricket Barnes around campus and getting her comfortable in a new place. We Hivers always stick together! This summer I finally conquered my fears and learned how to ‘nature pee!’ Soy Cleveland One of the things I think we do really well at camp is balancing the fun craziness of life while also slowing down to appreciate the world around us.
