Change happens to us almost constantly, yet our preparedness for it can be highly variable. I remember the wonder of my son’s first steps—as well as the apprehension when I realized he now tottered around a house where hazards lurked around every corner. Change brings happiness and trials, optimism and hesitation. Sometimes we try to hold back the water; other times we open our arms and let it rush past.
The birth of my first child was a moment of profound joy. It also brought new levels of uncertainty and adjustment, which I had previously negotiated without a thought. When change happens slowly, we can be frustrated. Or, alternatively, we can be relieved. Sometimes fear speaks more loudly than courage. Occasionally staying in place is more comfortable than moving. I was ready to sign my sons up for overnight camp when they were old enough, but less prepared than I thought when I heard the rumbles of thunder that greeted their first night sleeping away from home. I know now that camp presents a bigger opportunity for my own growth as a dad. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
