Fall 2023

Hello Hivers! How are you? I miss you, I miss you, I miss you! Life just isn’t the same without you all. (Dare I say it’s a hard-knock life?! Sorry, that was terrible.) Every year it’s astonishing how quickly camp goes from feeling alive and full of spirit to quiet and subdued. Hive is so different without all of you here. This year I stayed a few extra days after camp was over to attend Lanakila’s 100th reunion, and I spent some time enjoying the quiet version of Hive too. Sitting on the Dancing Green, I thought — I’m sorry the campers are missing this! It’s such a BVD (Beautiful Vermont Day) perfect for singing, swimming, splashing in a canoe and having a picnic on the Playfield. I enjoyed myself so much and I wished you were there to enjoy with me. All this to say, I miss you and think of you often. continued on page 2

We had a magical summer on Lake Fairlee! There was so much happening from everyday events like day hikes and swamp tromps, berry picking and lake swims, canisbee (frisbee in canoes) and goat yoga, ropes courses and pickleball. And let’s not forget the less-everyday events like stories at Rainbow’s End, Sunday Assembly talks, ranks passed and celebrated, Harry Potter Day, Mississippi Mud, and Hive’s Birthday. There were so many fun traditions shared and new opportunities explored. We talked about and practiced choosing curiosity — choosing to let go of assumptions, choosing to tell ourselves different stories, choosing to do something challenging or unknown, and then digging deeper. Do you remember to choose to be curious when everything in you is saying, “Nah, that’s too hard?” I just caught myself doing it today — and I smiled. Many of the best things about camp are the opportunities to enjoy all the fun, participate in traditions that have been passed down over generations of campers, and spend time in ways that are fulfilling. At camp there is time to play, time to read, time to connect in person with friends, time to challenge yourself, time to reflect, time to make mistakes and work through them, and time with your family. Outside of camp, I find myself often working to create a similar structure (minus the bugle calls — though maybe I should reconsider). When I make the time to focus on the important stuff, I feel better and I can be my best. People often talk about their camp self being the best version of themselves. I feel that way too AND I think focusing on the important stuff that we do while at camp outside of camp helps us to be that person year-round. Someone who chooses to be loving, powerful, playful, and free. I am looking forward to seeing some of you while I’m traveling this fall, but if I don’t see you, just know that you’re on my mind and I’m sending you all the snaps and camp magic your way. Aloha,

Ellie Pennell Hive Director

choosing curiosity? Did you bring some of camp home with you? Are you wearing your camp shoes? Are you still choosing curiosity? If you need a refresher from the shimmering shores of Lake Fairlee, we asked you for some of the ways you chose curiosity this summer and here’s what you told us... “ I started to go to the boat house more which was out of my comfort zone but I loved learning how to paddle a canoe.” Elliot Hollowell, Hilander

“ When I saw tomato pasta in the camper kitchen I thought I would not like it and then I tried it and loved it.” Eleanor Garmey, Lolander

“ I never tried sailing before and at camp I’m trying new things and making new friends. Also I used to not like scrambled eggs, but now I love scrambled eggs!” Valerie Orellana, Hilander

“ At the start of the summer I already knew all the activities I liked at home and my plan was to just do those. But one day when I signed up for Exploring it was cancelled and I could have just gone to Arts & Crafts but instead I went to Landsports. It was my best decision this summer.”

“ I went to every activity in one half.” Alexa Ciavarra, Lolander

“ I went on the Wiggle Wire at the ropes course even though I was scared.” Charlotte Hall, Lolander

“ I went on a hiking trip and tried sun butter for the first time and loved it.” Libby Shirley, Dolphin

“ I branched out and made a bunch of new awesome friends.” Adeline Magrans, Anti-Q

“ I went on the three-day Crawford. It was my third summer and I had never done a Crawford before. I was very proud of myself for trying something new.” Eleanor Coyne, Anti-Q

“ I went to Canoeing a lot more than I usually do and I loved it!” Summer Santos, Hilander

Nina Krents, Dolphin

WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Do you miss the bugle calls rousing you each morning from your sleepy slumber to take on a new day at camp? Is it preferable to your alarm clock rousing you for school?

BUT IF YOU HAD TO... A good number of you said you weren’t in any hurry to grow up. But if you HAD to grow in one direction, would you rather be 12 inches tall, or 12 feet tall? You had some good reasons either way...

What if there was a magical alarm, and when it went off you woke up and got out of bed, with one hitch:

“ I would be 12 feet tall because you can see amazing views!”

You’re now a grown up! What’s the first thing you’d do?

“ 12 inches because I love mini things and always wanted to be in a pocket!”

“ I would drive to as many states as I can in one day and I will befriend one person from each state”. CYDNEY MILNER, ANTI-Q

“ Go into Shaw Shack and prove to the other counselors that there is NO roller coaster!” CAMILLE CAVE, HILANDER

“Drink coffee?” ADDIE MCGINNIS, LOLANDER

“Not clean my room.” HANNAH BUCHAN, LOLANDER

“ Get famous, become a singer and an actress, and own a hair salon.” SCOUT LEE, LOLANDER

“ Probably go into Shaw Shack to see what’s inside, also to get hot cocoa!” ABBY NOBLE, ANTI-Q

“I would be a counselor or a Midi at Hive.” LILA DANN, LOLANDER

“Jump in a lake!” LIBBY SHIRLEY, DOLPHIN

“ I don’t know. I think I would probably read for a while and then make breakfast and eat.” ELIZABETH LIM KENNEDY, DOLPHIN

“ The first thing I would do is probably go out of town to a good school and get my nursing degree. And go to Chick-fil-a.” SAMIRAH BARBER, ANTI-Q

IZZY HEIDT, HILANDER

GEMMA “GG” MORRIS, ANTI-Q

“ I would like to be 12 feet tall so I can see over crowds and big things!” OCEAN LUNDELL, ANTI-Q

“ 12 feet 12 inches. Why choose one when you can have them all?” HAZEL LEVASSEUR, HILANDER

“ 12 feet. I could get the best apples when apple picking.” CARTER DOE, HILANDER

“ 12 feet tall because if you were 12 inches you would probably get lost.” RE SEVILLA, ANTI-Q

“ 12 inches because I wouldn’t have to crawl through doorways!” CAROLINE DESILETS, HILANDER

“ I would rather be 12 inches tall because I could explore all the places that I am too big to explore.” PAI BELLENOUE, ANTI-Q

“ 12 inches, because being tall attracts TOO much attention.” SAIGE FALLOON, DOLPHIN

“ I wouldn’t want to be either but especially not 12 feet! That’s too tall in my opinion. I would rather be 12 inches tall because that’s not as hard to live with.” KATIE HUNNICUTT, DOLPHIN

“ 12 inches tall because then I could see the whole world turned big. It would be very interesting, seeing those details. I would be a little kid again.” DELARA BUTTERS, HILANDER

RAINBOWS! Oh, Summer Camp It sure was a wet summer with lots and lots of liquid sunshine! Rain brings much-needed water to plants and animals and feeds our streams and lakes. And if we’re lucky, we get to see rainbows! Did you know these facts about rainbows?

When I see you, my heart beats faster and faster, until it beats out of my chest You really are the best When I hear you I hear birds chirping and laughter that echoes through the air I really wish I could be there You smell like summer, with your flowers and fun And hanging out beneath the sun You taste like salty water and mess hall meals

• You can’t actually touch a rainbow or reach the end of a rainbow because it appears visible based on your location and the location of the light source. It’s a tricky optical phenomenon! When you move, the rainbow will move, too. • A double rainbow, or “secondary rainbow” appears when light is reflected twice in a raindrop.

6

I could never really describe how it truly feels You feel like love, support, and a warm blanket wrapped around me on a cold winter day Though, I still have more things to say I think of you when I am lying under a cool, shady tree And looking up at the sky

• Rainbows normally appear from the rain, but can also be seen in other places water drops appear such as mist, fog, spray, waterfalls, and dew.

Every single minute I’m there,

• A “fogbow” is formed by cloud and fog droplets. They appear almost complete white with very faint colors visible. Fogbows are larger and wider than a rainbow.

I’ll think of how deeply you satisfy.

I feel a way I cannot share And when I’m gone and looking at the sky,

RAINBOW’S END Biff Fink SOMEWHERE ON A 9 Down , WHERE THE WOODS ARE DEEP WITH 10 Across , THERE’S A SUDDEN APPLE 2 Across , THERE’S A SECRET PLACE OF MINE. YES, AND SOMEWHERE THERE IS 7 Across , UP THE HILL AND ROUND THE BEND, JUST A QUIET PLACE FOR 5 Down , THAT THEY CALL THE RAINBOW’S END. CHORUS: RAINBOW’S END LIES JUST BEFORE US, YET IT SEEMS SO FAR AWAY. ISN’T THAT THE WAY IT’S ALWAYS BEEN? THE THINGS WE NEED THE MOST ARE ALWAYS JUST AROUND THE BEND. STILL WE KNOW WE’LL FIND THEM, WHEN WE REACH THE RAINBOW’S END. SOMEWHERE THERE’S A 4 Across , THAT THE WORLD HAS NEVER SEEN, WHERE THE SHIPS COME IN ON 8 Across , AND THE WAVES ARE APPLE-GREEN. TAKE YOUR 1 Down INTO THAT HAVEN, TAKE A PRAYER AND TAKE A 3 Down . MAKE A WISH AND MAKE A 6 Across , ON THE GOLD AT RAINBOW’S END.
