Dear Lanakila, I was really campsick when I got home this summer. I missed camp the way I used to miss home when I was a young camper. I missed the speed of summer, the incredible closeness of friends, and all the once-in-a-lifetime moments that made this summer wonderful. After camp, I am asked the same question when seeing friends for the first time: “How was camp this summer?” The answer I found myself giving over and over again was “restorative and brilliant.” “Why?” they would say, and I then had to try to explain things in words that can only be felt in feelings and describe moments and events in ways that really don’t do them justice. How can you really explain the triple overtime street hockey tournament finals or “Some Day” to someone who wasn’t there?

But I tried anyway. “This summer had an amazing group of counselors…” I’d begin and explain that all our international staff was back after several years away, some new counselors but mostly old, gave 120% of their hearts and souls to make the summer special. I’d continue, “We had campers who were eager and willing to learn, to share, to grow, and to love…” Both campers and counselors tried their best this summer to be people of dignity, respect, and compassion. We had some wonderful Viking Honors, beautiful wilderness trips, and exciting events like two birthday nights and the “100th anniversary” of the Ameden League. “But most of all,” I’d try to conclude, “we left lots of room in between planned activities, so that the magic of summer could fill the cracks and create many, many unexpected jewels that will be treasured forever.” As you can see, the words just don’t do it justice, but those of us who experienced Lanakila 2022 will never forget it. It was so good to share Lanakila’s 100th summer with all of you. Lanakila is bigger than all of us; it is a dream and a vision and an energy and a hope. It is a place to which we each bring our best selves and when we mix our goodness and thoughtfulness with that of others, well…we can do incredible things. I hope you are having a wonderful fall, and I will hopefully be seeing many of you as I travel the country over the next few months. It seems strange, but I’m already counting down the days until summer. I know that when we all return with open hearts and a desire to keep the dream alive, Lanakila 2023 will be wonderful beyond our greatest expectations. Skol,

I think you’ve got all these wonderful experiences with different skills, and that all teaches you things and makes you an interesting person, no matter how well you do them.” That was the advice given to renowned science fiction author Kurt Vonnegut when he was 15 years old. Vonnegut had this to say about that advice:
“And that honestly changed my life. Because I went from someone who hadn’t been talented enough at anything to excel, to someone who did things because I enjoyed them. I had been raised in such an achievementoriented environment… that I thought it was only worth doing things if you could ‘win’ at them.”
We know you tried all sorts of new activities this summer and learned a lot. And we think that is how you win. So...

We see from Brooksiders day in and day out that they are constantly trying new things. Sometimes it’s small things, like trying a new activity or department. Other times we see Brooksiders try something they may have never thought possible, like living in a tent with three other people, auditioning for the show, or signing up for a trip to Eagle’s Bluff. In reality, everything is new to Brooksiders but what they do is an attempt to explore all that camp can offer, and by doing so, they get to feed their curiosity and explore what they love as well as discover passions along the way. — David Westcott

Together, we are brimming with energy for camp, and we can’t wait for the next big event. Woodside is full of happiness, laughter, and joy, which radiates beyond our borders and into camp. Whether it’s games like ping pong and home run derby, or quieter moments like Rhombus and Council Fire, we approach each event with an excitement to participate and engage with our community. Woodsiders provide camp with a love for our program, a readiness to celebrate our peers, a jubilant spirit, and a deep commitment to Woodside pride! We’ve always been the unit where we start to ask ourselves “Who do I want to be?” and “How can I get there?” and “Why is lineup at different times each day?” Our Hillside tried to answer these questions by being our truest selves and it showed each and every day. From an ‘anonymous’ Speaker for the Meese (I see you Linus Krenkel) to Paul Lamour’s happy yells of “Oui oui Baguette!”, we had a unit filled with humor and shocking individuality. Many are the winter days where I will warm myself thinking of Wyckoff’s reminders to “Dial in!” and our not-so-quiet Rest Hours. It was a privilege to be a part of Hillside 2022, and I’ll see all of you lovely, wonderfully weird, folks back on Lake Morey in 2023! — Matt Smith
LAKESIDE Lakeside was a unit in the summer of 2022. A. Angelic B. Tolerable
C. Transformative D. Corny
Naturally, the ages of 14 and 15 are incredibly transformative years for anybody, and Lakesiders this year were no exception. Every day, counselors witnessed campers making new friends, finding new passions, and exploring their identities in creative and prolific ways. The most amazing thing I noticed, however, was that while each and every Lakesider was transforming in their own way, they were transforming Lanakila in the process. They put in their all to transform a place they love and leave behind a legacy that will carry for decades. In 2022, I have watched 60 campers give their heart and soul to Lanakila. They have transformed themselves to be better people, cultivating a camp culture that is kind, courageous, and fun. I am so proud of what every one of these campers has accomplished this summer. — Nik Malhotra
