Dear Lanakila, I was really campsick when I got home this summer. I missed camp the way I used to miss home when I was a young camper. I missed the speed of summer, the incredible closeness of friends, and all the once-in-a-lifetime moments that made this summer wonderful. After camp, I am asked the same question when seeing friends for the first time: “How was camp this summer?” The answer I found myself giving over and over again was “restorative and brilliant.” “Why?” they would say, and I then had to try to explain things in words that can only be felt in feelings and describe moments and events in ways that really don’t do them justice. How can you really explain the triple overtime street hockey tournament finals or “Some Day” to someone who wasn’t there?
