Hello Hivers! I’ve been thinking of you! Fall has arrived on the shores of Lake Fairlee. The leaves have changed color, and the campus feels very, very quiet. It’s such a change from the lively and busy energy that comes with all of YOU during the summertime! One of my favorite things about my office at Hive is that it’s located right on the path from the tunnel to the lake, and even when I am working at my desk, I can still hear laughter and excited conversation as campers run down the hill. Now that I’m working from my home office again, about an hour away from camp, it’s so quiet you can hear a pin drop. Luckily, my dog Teddy keeps me in good company during the day! continued on page 2

We asked, you answered!

Not only did we completely cure Margaret of her “ummm”s during meal announcements during Summer 2022, we also had fun finding additional ways to insert “slay” into all conversations. On the fun scale, I think we registered overwhelming success — what a slay! Activities galore, overnights, ranks, unit parties, singing, tetherball, hikes, canoe breakfasts, Rainbow’s End, tent family time, special celebrations — you did it all!

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Camp is so much more than just fun. For me, camp IS fun, but it’s also a combination of joy, learning, love, growth, and pride. This summer, just like you, I made new friends, gained confidence, and tried a few new things. I faced up to some challenges — some expected, some not — figured out how to work through them and came out stronger and wiser on the other side. I am sure you found some of these successes at camp, too. And your camp shoes! Did they make it home? Have you had them on much? Are you wearing them now? I’d love to hear from you about what lessons, skills, and memories you brought home with you. Maybe you’re using them to continue to grow and achieve in new ways now that you’re back home. Maybe you’ve reached out to make a new friend or tried something you didn’t think you could do. Maybe you’ve even shared some of what you learned at camp with a friend or someone else close to you there. I hope so. The pages here contain a few memories, thoughts, and even some jokes from camp. Enjoy it! Even more, I hope you know that while you’re out there, I’ll be right here with Teddy, thinking about you, rooting for you, and counting the days until I see you back here on our shores. FROM YOUR UNIT HEADS... 4

ENTHUSIASM, LEADERSHIP, LAUGHTER & WONDER… You brought out the best in each other and your Unit Heads saw the best in you. We asked them to reflect on the summer and this is what they had to say… The 2022 ANTI-QS sought new ways to be leaders this summer. They were strong advocates of their need to have the most successful last summer possible. Campers participated in an activity where they all wrote down personal goals for the summer. These ranged from finishing a rover to learning a bugle call. It was up to them what goals they focused on and how they went about achieving them, and most Anti-Qs succeeded! They showed their independence through finding new ways to have fun. When the tetherball pole in our unit broke, campers created a game called “Ropie” with the rope that was left!

The HILANDERS could best be described as creative problem solvers. Throughout the summer there has been no shortage of investigations into mirror disappearances, problem solving bathing suits stuck in trees or the most efficient way to cook dinner for the unit. We have figured out how to get the most marshmallows and pancakes on overnights, and how to navigate the ever-slippery slope the Hilander unit is perched on. This group of kids has engaged with camp and all it has to offer in a range of ways indicative of the awesome combination of personalities and creative thinking abilities we had in the unit this year.

The DOLPHINS of 2022 were enthusiastic performers. From our Dolphin talent show during our unit overnight — featuring acrobatic tricks, jokes, and singing — to the many unit interludes, poems and stories written and shared over the course of the summer, Dolphins gave it their all on both real and imaginary stages! We truly gave the whole camp a night to remember at our “Night at the Oscars” unit party with our energetic activities. Awkward dancing at Hive will never be the same when the Dolphins are involved, and I can’t wait to see everyone back on the Comb floor doing the “shopping cart!”

The LOLANDER UNIT this summer was filled with fun, laughter, and wonder. Each camper brought a unique set of strengths that added so much to our rich community. We had an especially epic time throwing our beach-themed unit party first half, the theme perfectly aligning with the fun spirit of the Lolander unit. Along with our day-to-day adventures, we had special moments like our overnight at Coo Coo’s Cove. This getaway was the perfect experience for us to spend time together and create memorable moments with each other. The best part about our overnight was our talent show, called the “Acoustic Cove,” when campers and counselors showcased their singing and dancing skills. At the end of the summer, we read Harold and the Purple Crayon together, and talked about what it means to rise above challenges when we encounter them at camp, and in our lives during the year. During this discussion, we highlighted what it means to use our creativity to overcome these challenges. Overall, we created countless joys together as a unit that we’ll remember for a lifetime.
