the buzz
fall 2021
Hello Hivers! I can’t believe it’s already fall! It feels like just yesterday we were all together at Hive singing in the Comb, canoeing around Lake Fairlee, and hiking up Aloha Hill for Rainbow’s End. Perhaps it feels like it was just yesterday because the magic of Hive sets itself within us so deeply. When I close my eyes I can still see the shimmer of the lake, smell the smoke of a campfire, and hear the sounds of our community together at play. Yet even though camp is officially over for the season, that doesn’t mean camp isn’t still with us. We may not be physically on the shores of Lake Fairlee, but we can still continue to be our best selves. This summer I saw moments of bravery, compassion, and silliness from each and every one of you. I saw you push yourselves to complete ranks, perform on stage, swim around the entire lake, and work to create a home away from home. I saw you all practicing love and care towards each other in a million different ways. I saw you all making up goofy games, smearing Hive and Mississippi Mud on your faces, coming up with funny, creative unit party costumes and belting out songs from Frog and Toad (because Frog certainly looked snazzy in a bathing suit!). Just because we are no longer together at Hive doesn’t mean we can’t continue to try new things, give friends a hug or a smile when they are having a rough day (or for no reason at all!), and, of course, put together wild costumes.
We may not be physically on the shores of Lake Fairlee, but we can still continue to be our best selves. This summer I saw moments of strength, compassion, courage and exuberance from each and every one of you. I know I can continue to be my best Hive self even as the leaves fall, the snow blankets the landscape and melts away into the spring. For me being my best self means
listening carefully, finding the good, joining in even when I feel nervous, and making playfulness a priority. Before you know it, summer will be upon us again and your counselors will be running from all directions to greet you. The dining room (and maybe the tent) will be filled with the sound of “Washer Woman” and the smell of grilled cheese sandwiches. The mist will rise from the lake and canoes will be pushed off from the docks. I can’t wait to have you back and see the Hive 2022 community come together. Until then, continue to be the remarkable people I know you all to be. Aloha,
Ellie Pennell Director of Aloha Hive
