LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Chris Overtree Dear Friends, In the midst of a beautiful piece of music, there are loud places (crescendo), soft places (diminuendo), and keen moments when there is no sound (lacuna). Often, silence is used to induce a sense of serenity—or perhaps tension—and to amplify the experience of what follows. A child diving into a still lake reaches that beautiful moment when she is suspended in space—neither moving up nor falling down. Between each breath, we pause. And when we are rested and well, the pause can be long and deep. At The Aloha Foundation, we are in this moment of rest between movements—at the top of our dive—in the pause between breaths. And we are rested and well. With the culmination of the Gift of Generations endowment campaign, the many supporters of Aloha have given us this precious moment for reflection. And we promise to use it to ensure that Aloha is strong for the many generations of families to come.
Fundraising campaigns are often followed by periods of assertive movement and growth—indeed we have had these moments with the founding of Horizons and Ohana. But what truly makes this moment special is our opportunity for careful contemplation and sustainable planning. As a mature non-profit with a wealth of expertise in working with people, we can now decide how best to grow intellectually, spiritually and sustainably. May we all take this moment of rest to feel gratitude for what we have accomplished—not just in this most successful endowment campaign—but for 110 years of growing into an organization that changes lives each and every day, with respect, humor, love and gratitude. We are here—and so glad you are with us. Aloha and Skol,
LETTER FROM THE INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Posie Taylor Dear Aloha Friends, Chris’ piece in this report proves once again what a wise man we have chosen to be our leader! Taking time to pause, even in the midst of amazing successes, to reflect, to evaluate, to understand, maybe even to celebrate, is essential before pressing on into the unknown. I take a breath, close my eyes and remember the work of the past year, when I returned after ten years away to lead our beloved organization once again. Together with Aloha’s dedicated A-Team, we took some essential steps towards preparing The Foundation for a future even brighter than our past. I breathe, as Chris encourages us, and then.... Probably because I am 72 and my time left to work for this wonderful Aloha Foundation I have been part of for so long is briefer than many of our leaders, I feel an urgency to move forward. I want to share our work with even more families, I want to harness technology to spread the word, I want our programs to be even more intentional in their design and delivery, I want our leaders even more filled with dedication, creativity and wisdom, I want the list of our partners in this vital work to be even longer and I want us learning from others every day. The world feels urgently in need of our contribution. The future feels fraught with challenges Aloha can help solve. Time is flying by, I think, and I want to hurry, to respond now with everything we have. No more breathing, Chris: there is no time for breath!
And then I stop. I remember the message of the Gift of Generations: we are part of a long history and a bright future. If I do my part, there will be others carrying the torch, sharing the vision, rising to the world’s challenges long after I am gone. If I—and all of us working so hard today—do all that we can to learn and teach and be intentional, others will follow and stand on our shoulders. We do not have to do it all, but only do our part to keep the Aloha vision strong. So I breathe again and invite you too to join Chris and all the Aloha leaders in quiet celebration of a job well done and in excitement for whatever lies ahead. With deep gratitude,
LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT Anne Conway Juster Dear Aloha Foundation Alumni, Parents and Donors, Some of my fondest memories as an Aloha camper in the late 1970’s have to do with the simple question “how much further?” My camp pals and I would pester Fred Downing at least once a trip even though we always knew the answer. “Nineteen more miles” Fred would reply in his distinctly Maine accent. We relished his droll sense of humor and consistency. No matter how challenging the trail, Fred’s message remained the same. As it turned out, distance wasn’t the point. What we cherished most was the shared effort to achieve a goal. In his low-key way Fred taught us to be in the moment. Though summiting a mountain or reaching the end of the trail was a welcome reward, what mattered most was our collective effort to reach the goal. Fast-forward to 2016. There have been many occasions over the last 12 months when people wondered “how much further?” When will the trustees introduce the next Executive Director? How many more donors will it take to achieve (and exceed!) our campaign goal? Who could possibly fill the shoes of the one and only Barnes Boffey? What will it take to deliver “the best summer ever”—again? Fortunately, in a community dedicated to inspiring people of all ages to learn, explore, grow and be their best selves, cheerfully going the distance is a shared goal. We made it. We are here.
As the President of The Aloha Foundation it is my pleasure to introduce the 2015 Annual Report. This vivid and detailed publication offers a snapshot of The Foundation’s progress to date. Leadership at all levels is engaged and vibrant, our finances are healthy, and the relevance of summer camps, family camps and educational programming emphasizing simplicity, the outdoors and living in community is more important than ever. On behalf of the Board of Trustees I thank you for your continued support. Instead of looking ahead and wondering “how much further?” please join me in enjoying the stories and accomplishments shared in this report. Now is the time to appreciate where we are and give thanks to those who helped us get there. Aloha,
ALOHA HIVE Kathy Plunkett, Director We are here; here in the moments of silence, Here in shared joy and here when your heart hurts, Here to help when you want to be more, and here when you feel like less, and just want a hug that says “It’s ok.” Your being here for me and my being here for you is the gift of camp, The foundation of our connection, and the promise of the summer yet to come. Here we are with the mountains, and the water and the smell of pine, coming down the Hillside to find our community, our home at Hive, our place, our “here.” From the moment our counselor’s name is yelled on opening day and it weaves through the tent field, we know that “being here” with each other is what we have thirsted for all year. “Being here” is choosing simplicity so we can have grounding in relationships. “Being here” is talking or playing cards or watching the stars at night.
“Being here” is knowing the future may be uncertain, but trusting each other in the present to face together whatever fears may come; knowing that our counselors and our friends and our best selves will be up to whatever task presents itself. “Being here” gives me the strength to risk going “there,” wherever that is, and to have faith that I will be able to enjoy the comfort of what I know and am getting to know, and to balance the known with the unknown. “Being here” is standing in the strength and love and play and freedom of camp, and knowing “I’m enough.”
ALOHA MJ Parry, Outgoing Director This winter I participated in several Summer Opportunities fairs, events that offer families the chance to research summer programs for their children. These events used to be called Camp Fairs – but not so anymore, for the simple fact that summer camps are now just one of many summer opportunities available to children. Today, youth can travel to Africa to build schools or improve access to clean water. They can choose language immersion programs in countries across the globe. Or they can choose fast track college prep programs or specialize in subjects like engineering or aeronautics. Of course, specialized athletics programs for college-bound athletes round out this truly rich world of opportunity. With this wealth of choice and the considerable pressure to “build a resume,” why would parents and their daughters choose Aloha? They do so out of the understanding that Aloha helps girls build their “resume for life!” At the heart of what we do is to
provide girls with the mindset and tools to see the power of the choices they have in life about who they are, and how to experience the world around them. Aloha creates the community where girls are empowered to become their best selves, to own and choose their own lives. The vision the Gulicks put forth in 1905 still guides us today. What could be more important in today’s world than supporting the multifaceted development of young women? What a powerful and immense responsibility we have to carry on this legacy! And while we evolve and grow to meet the changing needs of the Aloha girls of the future, we hold sacred the importance of creating and supporting the communities where girls thrive. So while there are many opportunities for girls to choose today, camp is still the most valuable place to spend a summer. With deep gratitude for supporting this vision for 110 more years, I wish you Aloha,
LANAKILA
Barnes Boffey, Director Living our lives in a relatively orderly and quality manner means that we have to have principles and guidelines to shape behavior. These often take the form of personal philosophies or slogans or mantras, and if we use them well, they become part of our daily lives and on-going decision-making. “Leave a campsite better than you found it,” was a slogan that I encountered as a 7-year-old at Lanakila, and it has played a big part in my life, as has “We don’t ‘boo’ at Lanakila,” and “There are many ways to be a man.” There is also a series of things which I use as a mantra and which guide me through fear, confusion, and anxiety. They are: Show Up, Pay Attention, Tell the Truth, and Release the Outcome. Each is a challenge in its own right, and I find that as a group they comprise a wonderful vision and a demanding standard.
challenge of finding ways to let others know what we honestly see, and think and feel, and we accept that our own “inside truth” is available and should be listened to.
Showing Up means we put ourselves out there, no matter what. We face our fears and our challenges; we don’t run even when we don’t know what to do. Pay Attention is a call to awareness! Look, listen, watch, feel, care, absorb… all ways to really allow ourselves to hear everything we encounter, especially the still small voice within ourselves. Telling the Truth in all situations is the hardest thing in the world, bar none. We face the
The Foundation is an organic and ever-changing organization. We will always have our challenges and our successes, and things will always both change and stay the same. No matter what happens, we keep showing up! I send love to all in the days ahead.
Finally, Release the Outcome is an invitation to faith and trust, a chance to relax in the knowledge that if we have done the first three things well, the results will be positive and will have an integrity which we might not have imagined, or a solidity which might never have happened had we brought endless control and willpower to the process. “Things” may not work out exactly as we had hoped, but as results unfold, “we” are the people we want to be and we know we can handle the reality of what comes next with the same process: Show Up, Pay Attention. Tell the Truth, Release the Outcome!
Peace and Skol,
HULBERT
Jason Knowles, Director I’d never been a fan of winter before I moved to Vermont. It wasn’t until I experienced my first blizzard that I realized how beautiful and peaceful that snowfall can be. This past winter, when Lake Morey froze and snow covered the ground, I was enchanted by the stillness of the cold evenings. I used to feel like winter was a time we waited for the warm weather to return, the flowers to bloom and the campers to arrive. Now I see winter differently. Autumn and then winter programs offer moments of Aloha spirit with a different flavor than summer. Winter becomes spring, and before we know it, summer returns. Living year-round in Fairlee, I see the seasons flowing one to the next, each with its own characteristics, challenges, and opportunities. Hulbert is part of that annual cycle, making Aloha programs a year-round adventure, with each growing with knowledge of those that came before. This is what it means to be an intentional organization.
As we change and grow, we keep at the center of all we do the same ideas about community, how to be our best selves, and the importance of taking time for reflection. Our six camps and programs offer participants a different experience, and yet all embody the same core ideals and values. The wrap-up of the Gift of Generations campaign this fall felt like the end of a chapter in our organization’s long and proud history. I hope we all take some time to reflect on how far the Gulicks’ vision has been extended as we prepare to come together and write the next chapter. Aloha and Skol,
OHANA
Vanessa Riegler, Director We are here. We are 43 (degrees) 52’ 41.37”N; 72 (degrees) 13’ 34.86”. We are approximately seven acres of cleared and developed land within approximately 111 acres of mixed northern hardwood forest and forested wetlands. We are 27 residential cabins, six platform tents, ten program and support buildings, and one main lodge situated 980 feet above the southern shore of Lake Fairlee. We are one pavilion, one support shed, and two docks on the shore of the lake; we are two miles of rocky roads and trails connecting these two locales. We are a property located in the town of Thetford, the village of Post Mills, owned by The Aloha Foundation, cared for by a small group of families and friends, enjoyed by many more families. Appropriately, family runs deep in the history of this place: first as a welcoming shore for native tribal families, then as a family hill farm and forest, then as Shanty Shane, again a place for families to summer, then as Lake Fairlee
Club, a family getaway, then an arts-based family camp, Lake Fairlee Camp, and now as Ohana. We are who we are; we do what we do, because we are here and because we believe that families can experience Aloha together. We are this place, at this time, with these people, with this history, and overwhelmingly with your support. We are constantly becoming, growing, looking, changing... But for a moment, we can stand on the geology of history, upon the ground of the present day, and at the precipice of tomorrow. And the view looks magnificent from here. Aloha,
HORIZONS
Tracey McFadden, Director At Horizons we look back fondly on our humble beginnings and think about how much we have grown since then. Horizons is built on the best traditions of Aloha, but has created its own identity. It’s fun to remember our first Quidditch match, the beginning of all-camp Capture the Flag, the arrival of our pirate ship and more recently, the building of our tree house. We are proud of the many eager young campers who have grown into wonderful counselors, just as happy now to be spending their summers on Lake Fairlee. Our nourishing collection of memories is filled with the smiles, challenges, successes, and growth of almost two decades of Horizons campers. As much as we enjoy reminiscing, we are just as excited to look ahead to the future. Our senior staff have gathered to dream and plan ways to expand our reach while supporting our mission and camp community. This summer, we are expanding our Apprenticeship Program to strengthen the camper-counselor ratio, and
we are also inviting camper families and neighbors to experience a weekend Horizons Family Day. The following summer we look ahead to extending the length of our summer programming. Nostalgia for the past and anticipation for the future both play a significant role in Horizons’ vitality, but what is most important is who we are right now. We have arrived! Horizons has grown up as a camp and is now a well-established, sought-after program with a strong presence within The Aloha Foundation, the Upper Valley, and beyond. Campers and counselors come together to build friendships, learn new skills, explore our natural environment, and become their best selves. We are fully present in this moment and what a joy that is! Aloha,

LETTER FROM THE TREASURER, RUDY GLOCKER --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------2015 was a strong year for The Aloha Foundation, both in terms of program influence and our financial results. Our operating results remained solid and the Gift of Generations Campaign continued to drive donations. Our investment portfolio slightly outperformed its benchmark. The financial stability of The Foundation is strong, and 2015 showed another year of improvement. Operationally The Foundation made an impact on the lives of thousands of participants. Strong growth was seen at both Ohana and Hulbert, strengthening our overall portfolio of programs. Both of these programs had their strongest years since inception.
Total giving in 2015 was $3.4MM. The Gift of Generations donations are particularly important, helping to fund The Foundation in perpetuity by endowing monies to ensure the highest quality staff, outstanding facilities and a mix of participants in the spirit of The Aloha Foundation. Strong endowment giving lessens our reliance on tuition (to a certain extent) and gives us greater flexibility in years to come. The investment portfolio was flat for 2015. The investment portfolio now totals $23.4MM. It is important to note that the markets are having a difficult start to 2016, but we are fortunate enough to have a strong base and a well diversified portfolio of assets.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We would also like to thank all those alumni, parents, friends, staff and other supporters who donated to The Foundation in 2015. Your generous gifts allow us to make an impact on many people’s lives – not only in 2015, but for generations to come. On behalf of The Foundation, thank you. On behalf of the trustees and all the constituents of Aloha, we would like to thank our excellent staff, and Chief Financial Officer Jane Huppee, for an outstanding 2015.
Our auditors have – yet again – made sure to praise our staff for their professionalism, accuracy and cooperation during the 2015 audit. Our auditors have assured us (again) that we have a top notch staff that is giving us great financial information and tools to help run excellent programs. This combination will allow us to further grow and enhance our mission. We look forward to 2016.
GIVING 2015: A TEAM EFFORT -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Your gift is vital to our success. It may also be an expression of your deep connection to Aloha and possibly a tangible expression of your gratitude for the value a camp summer has had on your life. What is clear to us is that each gift to The Aloha Foundation is made because of love. Each gift arrives at the Foundation office with a story. Here are a few: • The gift to the Annual Fund in honor of the Lanakila counselor who has had a powerful impact on son’s life, and in turn, that of entire family. • The gift to an Endowment for Staff Leadership in memory of your mom whose favorite place in the world was Aloha Camp, and in particular, the Woodchuck Hole. • The gift to an Endowment Fund created in memory of a late husband who cherished the trails and forests around the camps. ANNUAL FUND GIVING
• The bequest in your will that enables us to support a full tuition for one child. That child may grow up and not only send her own children to camp, but in turn, create an additional endowment so that other children benefit from Aloha just as she did and, in fact, her own mother did. These stories are real. They happened in 2015, and you made them possible. To the leadership volunteers like Fran Rosenfeld and John Herrick, Jr. to the Committee Chairs like Kathy Harvard, to the forward-thinking donors like Molly Tracy Rosen, Ann Berkey, the Stritter family, and to each and every one of you, we salute you and thank you for bringing the power of Aloha to thousands today. And to thousands more tomorrow. Patricia Ayres Crawford Marisa Miller Donovan Laura Gillespie Tom Miller
We recognize donors who have contributed to The Aloha Foundation regularly for at least five consecutive years with the mark of the Kanaka ( ) a figure that represents the spirit in nature in the Hawaiian culture, which Mother and Father Gulick loved and commemorated. Continuous giving by so many alumni and friends ensures our ability to promote the Gulicks’ vision for Aloha long into the future. = Deceased Gifts to the Gift of Generations Endowment Campaign are reported separately in the dedicated Campaign Report.

GULICK LEGACY -----------------------------------------------------------------
A growing number of alumni, parents, and friends have found ways to ensure that the Aloha Camps will thrive for many generations to come. They have become members of the Gulick Legacy by making planned gifts such as bequests, charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities and insurance policies to benefit The Aloha Foundation. Our heartfelt thanks to the following members of the Aloha family who have notified us of their plans: Anonymous (6) Anonymous (2) Jane B. Ackerman Ginia Schauffler Allison Mr. & Mrs. David E.
