For so many of us, our own personal “touch points” along the Aloha timeline occupy a special place in our hearts and minds. We have memories of camp as a place we could safely be our best selves, and later as a place we could watch our children and grandchildren be their best selves too. It's truly magical and it's been going on now for over 106 years. But as the timeline in this report displays, while the world has changed so much in those 106 years, not a lot has really changed up in Fairlee. And that is why we love it and cherish it, and we come back often just to see that it is so.

Part of the job of the Board of Trustees is to ensure that as the world changes the camps and programs of The Aloha Foundation continue to thrive and prosper. That was certainly the case in 2011. Our enrollments were strong, financials solid, staff superb and the generosity of the Aloha community truly amazing. With over 7,000 participants served, an endowment reaching $12 million and annual giving topping $1 million, we truly had an extraordinary year.

The Board also looks ahead to ensure that our camps and programs continue to thrive well into the future. We’ve recently completed a five year strategic planning process centered on the theme of excellence. While we seek to bottle up and preserve what we do well we also pursue areas where we can do even better. The Board recognizes that while tuition revenue will always be our primary source of revenue, the pressures on today’s budgets compel us to more fully develop alternate streams of income. In the years ahead we will seek to significantly increase the contribution of our annual fundraising and endowment income.

This past November we bid farewell to two long standing members of our Board, Randy Johnson and Kate Merritt. Randy was one of the few “outsiders” to have served on the Aloha Board, and his perspectives and insights were always healthy and welcome. During her multi decade service on the Board, Kate held the office of president for four of those years, chaired virtually every committee and led or contributed to nearly every major project or undertaking of the past 20 years. We are pleased to have elected Kate to the position of Emeritus Trustee and look forward to her continued wise counsel.

Whether your first touch of the Aloha timeline was in 2011 or decades ago, you know it well because it was special. Those special moments are what we all have in common as members of the Aloha Community, and the spirit and energy that surround them are what propel us forward toward a bright future.

In 2011, the 106th year of their continuous operation, the camps of The Aloha Foundation and the Foundation’s programs of outdoor education and adventure offered growth and learning experiences to well over 7,000 children and adults—not only at home in Fairlee, but also in the Green Mountains of Vermont and the White Mountains of New Hampshire; New York’s Adirondacks, wild-river and seacoast environments in northern Maine, Cree-frequented waterways and aboriginal communities in remote reaches of Quebec, and vicariously, wildernesses the world over, through workshops and conferences of back country canoe paddlers, coldregion snow trekkers, Scandinavian skier-dancers, wilderness emergency care practitioners, foresters, environmental educators, and other weekend special interest gatherers at the Hulbert Outdoor Center.

The Foundation’s strong financial performance, presented in the following pages, derives in large part from the great variety of activities we offer, the diversity of audiences we serve, and the synergies among them. Very young children—kindergartners, 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders— experience parental independence for the first time at Horizons Day Camp, then frequently make the leap to the sleep-away camps a few years later. Senior citizen-age former campers and counselors come back to Fairlee in increasing numbers now, to preside over family reunions at Ohana Camp with their adult children and toddler to teenage grandchildren. During their family camp stays, children of sleep-away age often make exploratory forays to Aloha, Hive, and Lanakila; some want to sign up on the spot. Young “graduates” of the residential camps— Lakesiders at Lanakila, Clubbers at Aloha—can participate in leadership development expeditions under Hulbert’s auspices the summer following their last camper year, before seeking counselor-in-training opportunities as Bridgers, Midis or Floaters. Some students in wilderness first aid and first responder courses in the fall, winter and spring return to Fairlee as skilled summer camp counselors or instructors in the Hulbert School Program.

All this cross-fertilization not only builds community from camp to camp and program to program, but also helps keep the Foundation’s collective business of best-self promotion strong. The long timeline of the Aloha Camps reflects that strength and testifies eloquently to the adage that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

With continued diligence on the expense side, and strong program revenue across the board, The Aloha Foundation had a very good 2011. In fact, each of the six programs— Aloha, Aloha Hive, Lanakila, Hulbert Outdoor Center, Horizons and Ohana— exceeded their budgeted net income for the year. Giving to the Foundation also was impressive, with donations to the Annual Fund of $355,000 and other restricted gifts totaling $992,000. For the third year in a row, total giving was more than $1 million—a wonderful demonstration of the commitment to the Foundation by alumni, parents, friends and staff. The performance of our investment portfolio stands out as the single disappointment in 2011, having decreased by 8.5% over the prior year. Still, with more than $12 million in the portfolio as we look into 2012, the Foundation remains on extremely solid footing. I'll end with some The Aloha Foundation, Inc. ‘color commentary’ about this year's audit (see the detailed financials nearby). As was the case last year (and for many years prior to this), the auditors were effusive in their praise for the Foundation staff and their work through the audit. Of the more than 75 non-profit organizations the audit firm works with, we were the only ones to not have any audit adjustments—a remarkable feat! The Aloha Foundation is staffed with an incredible group of people, each of whom makes an important contribution to our success. Many times, their contributions are behind the scenes and too infrequently recognized. So, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Jane Huppee and the entire Foundation accounting team for another job well done!

Giving 2011 Through the generosity of so many members of the Aloha family, the Foundation set a new record in fundraising this year, attracting $1,315,482 in combined gifts from 1,024 donors. The 2011 Annual Fund raised $354,696 in support for the camps’ operations from 754 donors. Restricted gifts for all purposes including camperships totaled $992,000 from 270 donors. Thirteen donors gave $71,938 in support of the renovation of Aloha’s historic Art Barn in addition to the many donors who contribute to the Lanakila Director’s Cabin. Added to gifts received in prior years for the same purpose, we have now secured half of the funding needed to underwrite the renovations, which will take place after the close of the 2012 camp season. And this year 29 donors added $708,173 to endowed funds, helping to guarantee a strong future for the Aloha camps. Thank you all for your generous support!

We recognize donors who have contributed to The Aloha Foundation regularly for at least five consecutive years with the mark of the Kanaka ( ) a figure that represents the spirit in nature in the Hawaiian culture, which Mother and Father Gulick loved and commemorated. Clifford Lovering Happy Wanderer Endowment For many camp alumni, Clifford Lovering defines the Aloha spirit.

For decades, Cliffie drove the camp trucks and vans carrying campers to their wilderness adventures.

Handing out his famous fireballs and patiently listening to another round of “Hi Ho, The Rattlin Bog,” Cliffie was the driver and much more. He cheered and encouraged in times of challenge, he supported in times of trial, he befriended always. In 2011, the following donors made gifts in Cliffie’s memory to The Happy Wanderer Endowment, which is part of the Foundation’s endowed support for camperships.

Ed Gulick Campership Endowment

Established in memory of Clarissa B. Buffum Bassett Edgerton (H23-25). The Edgerton Natural History Endowment supports nature education programs at the summer camps and the Hulbert Outdoor Center, as well as stewardship of campus natural environments.

Established in memory of Ed Gulick (L36-42).

The Ed Gulick Campership Endowment provides financial aid to families who lack the means to support a camp tuition. Beneficiaries include campers referred to the Foundation by youth and community service agencies in New Hampshire, Vermont, Boston, New York City and elsewhere.
