he 'INFOCA' fire prevention and fire fighting units in Almería province have been crossing their fingers and toes that there would not be large fires during the summer. So far this seems to have worked, despite the continuing drought. They brought the start of their “high risk” period forward to May 1st this year, after some major fires during April. The “high risk” period continues until October 15th.

Focus on Local News Vodafone Cheapest After inviting tenders for 'phone and internet services for the next two years, Almería town hall have agreed to stay with Vodafone. Their offer of 291,000 euros per year was adjudged to be the best combination of services offered and price. Almería town hall have been consistently making savings on tenders for this period of time, and the amount they paid Vodafone for the previous contract was 432,000 euros per year, which was cheaper than the previous provider, Movistar! Vodafone have also agreed to update a considerable number of out of date mobile 'phones for a discount price of 131,000 euros.

The Sorbas “AVE” Tunnels Local politicians complained bitterly when the Spanish Ministry of Transport recently bricked up the entrances and exits of the completed tunnels that form part of the Murcia-Almería “AVE” (high speed train project). The government recently confirmed a second time in parliament that this was just a temporary situation, and did not signify at all that the project would not go ahead. As on previous occasions they justified the closures as being on safety grounds, to combat any possible vandalism or injury. Critics say that the closure of the tunnels is a symbolic admission that no further work is envisaged for a long time. (We deal with this in a following article).

Housing Stock A national survey of second hand houses for sale throughout Spain revealed that in Almería province there are 13 properties on the market for every 1,000 inhabitants. In Murcia this number is only 6.4. As regards major cities, the average number of second hand houses is 12.6 per 1,000 head of population. Anyone looking for a property in Alicante city can choose from a whopping 26 properties per 1,000 people. This is caused by the very high density of housing. Between January and the end of June this year, some 1,200 second hand properties changed hands in Almería province, 2.3% more than the same period in 2013. Areas such as the coast in Almería province are experiencing a larger increase in sales than the figures suggest.

'Endesa' Investment The relationship between central government and the electrical power supply companies is probably at an all time low. They have been hit with many new regulations designed to save money for consumers. Despite this, Susana Díaz, the president of the Junta de Andalucía, has announced a major investment by 'Endesa' at Carboneras. She has announced that the company will spend 200 million euros building a new plant designed to reduce CO2 emissions. This project is scheduled to be started before the end of 2014. It is being claimed that 500 new jobs will be created. Politicians are falling over themselves to bring more employment to Carboneras where 500 people were due to be employed when the Algarrobico hotel project was stopped in 2008. Dangerous Dogs A crackdown on the registration and observance of regulations regarding dangerous dogs has resulted in 71 prosecutions in the first half of 2014 in Almería province. Owners of these dogs have to be listed on a register in each municipality and be in possession of a special licence. Focus on Local News Bull terriers, Tosa Inu, and Akita Inu dogs, or cross breeds. These dogs can only be in public places if the lead length is no longer than two metres, and the dog is muzzled. There also has to be full identification information on a tag attached to the collar. In a private property, the dog can only be loose outside the actual dwelling if a perimeter fence or wall is of sufficient height that the dog cannot get over it. Fines for non-compliance go up to 500 euros for minor offences, to 2,000 euros for major non-compliance, and to 30,000 euros if a dog should cause major injuries.

The problems were thought to have been sorted out in 2013, but then Russia changed their minds. More Twists and Turns The Andalucía High Court recently delivered their judgement regarding the status of the land where the 'El Algarrobico' hotel has been built in Carboneras. Ecology groups were astounded when the three judges ruled that the land was zoned for urban development. The ecology group “Salvemos Mojácar” in conjunction with other ecology groups immediately challenged this ruling. The resulting judgement is that the three judges acted completely correctly, and their unanimous verdict was arrived at after a logical and completely impartial assessment of the situation when the company 'Azata del Sol' received permission to build the hotel. The decision that the sector of land where the hotel was built was zoned for urban development also applies to the surrounding land where the developers planned to build other hotels, a housing complex and a golf course. Work was stopped in 2008 after intense pressure by 'Greenpeace' in particular, who only came on the scene when the hotel was 90% complete. A following judgement ruled that Carboneras town hall acted entirely correctly within their own urban regulations in force in 2003 in giving permission for the hotel to be built. The Junta de Andalucía has announced that on September 12th they intend to legally expropriate the land and pay the developers 2.3 million euros, the purchase price on the original title deed. The value of the nearly completed hotel has been put at 70 million euros. The Junta de Andalucía is trying to avoid a compensation award for this amount.

'ITV' Discounts The cost of obtaining an 'ITV'(MOT) test certificate has been reduced in various situations. There is a 10% discount for anybody who goes in the immediate period before the test is due. There is also a discount for private cars of less than 1,600cc. Scooters and small motorbikes up to 125cc get a discount of 40%. Where the travelling mobile test unit for these vehicles comes to fixed locations there is no extra surcharge (as now) if you go there. These discounts will result in a saving of 15 million euros for vehicle owners in the next 12 months. These discounts apply to Andalucía, not the Murcia region. Anti-fire Documents The Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) has compiled far ranging documents concerning the areas where the likelihood of a fire is considered high. The documents include definitive maps, infrastructure, roads and access points, evacuation plans and communication facilities. These documents cover Alcolea, Berja, Bédar, Carboneras, Mojácar and Turre. These municipalities have also been advised what action they can take themselves to minimise the outbreak of fires, particularly where there is a concentrated resident population. The high risk period for fires is at present set to end on October 15th, but could be extended, the same way the start of the period was brought forward a month because of the drought situation.

Focus on Local News continued Bayárcal New Residents A few months ago the village council in Bayárcal announced that they would provide free housing and water to three families with school-age children. This was because the local school was threatened with closure as there were only 14 pupils. Some 80 families asked for further information, 43 sent in an official application, and 13 were short listed. In addition to the free housing and water, an agricultural area is available with training and help for the cultivation from existing residents of the 400 total inhabitants. The three families chosen were all unemployed and had run out of financial benefits. Between them they have a total of 9 children (3 per family), boosting the school numbers up to 23. The mayor of Bayárcal says that the final selection of the three lucky families was very difficult, and if the Almería county council would pay for the cost of repair work on other unoccupied properties in the village, more families could be housed. Minor repair work to these three properties was financed by the town hall. The main activity in the village is related to agriculture.

People making contributions to private pension schemes will lose out, as the amount they can pay in each year and get a tax reduction is being reduced from 10,000 euros down to 8,000. Tax Relief The Spanish Prime Minister recently announced details of a draft bill in parliament that claimed to give substantial cuts in income tax between 2015 and 2016. He said that no income tax payer would pay the same or more tax (so less) during these financial years. The existing seven bands that determine how much tax is paid have been reduced to five bands. Income tax stopped by employers will come down in 2015, as well as tax paid by self employed persons. Shortly after these cuts were announced, the 'Hacienda' government tax authority in Andalucía pointed out that according to their calculations only 60% of the working population would see any decrease, 37% would have no reductions at all, and 3% would pay more! These calculations have been confirmed by employment associations. The reductions are an average of 12% for lower tax payers, but also favour persons with over 120,000 euros annual taxable pay, hardly your average tax payer. Personal allowances have been increased by 400 euros to 5,550 euros, long overdue and still only about 50% of the personal allowance

Speed Limiters The Spanish road safety authorities have entered the EU debate as to whether cars should be fitted with speed limiters, and the manufacturers should modify their engine capacity and speed. Their head of road safety, Bartolomé Vargas, accepts that this has to be a long term plan, but considers that excessive speed certainly contributes to deaths and injuries on the highway. He states that it would be ridiculous if vehicles had a top speed of only 120km/hr, but there is a sensible higher limit so that vehicles with a top speed of as much as 280km/hr would completely disappear. He considers that excessive high speeds serve no useful purpose at all, are illegal if speeding, and need to be banned.

The Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) has been accused of continually changing their minds regarding the “Algorrobico” hotel in Carboneras. One of the long standing claims has been that they awarded the developers a tourist grant very early on, of an amount over 2 million euros. Carboneras town hall has repeatedly pointed this out, along with the highly critical ecology groups. An investigation by the “PSOE” (labour) run Junta has revealed, much to their delight, that a grant of 2.8 million euros was approved, but by the previous “PP” (conservative) government in power at the time, nothing to do with the Junta! This grant was 10% of the construction cost. The grant was due to be paid when the hotel was completed, so it was never actually paid.

The Turre “Fuente” The “fuente” in Turre where people can fill up water bottles is to get a facelift. It is looking very decrepit and the worry is that it could become a health hazard. The Almería council have approved a total grant of 150,000 euros for various works in the municipality, including 50,000 euros for the “fuente”. Work should start this month.

The Russian Veto Almerían suppliers of fruit and vegetables will be the hardest hit in Andalucía if the 12 month ban on importing EU products into Russia becomes a reality. In 2013, they supplied goods to the value of 15 million euros, and the quantity supplied is well up so far this year. The suppliers are concerned that this export market will be exploited by growers in Morocco and Turkey, and Almería growers may lose this market permanently. The EU Common Agricultural authorities have stated that they will give compensation for lost exports to EU states affected where existing crops are unsold and have to be dumped, or cannot be grown. Fish exports will also be affected. The initial idea is that 125 million euros will be given to the affected parties in Spain.

Ebola Precautions The Spanish National Health department have advised all airports and ports that they must tighten up their protocol for screening entrants from the African countries affected by the ebola outbreaks. This has been put in place in Algeciras and Motril, the main gateway for African immigrants and boat people, particularly from Sierra Leone. Almería port will also have to increase their health security for the same reasons. The Red Cross is particularly involved with the reception of the illegal immigrants attempting to reach Spain by sea. The Guardia Civil police force,

The Alquife Mine

Iron Ore The Spanish company 'Minas del Alquife S.L.” is the Spanish branch of the Dutch company who are to re-open the iron ore mines at Marquesada del Zenete, just over the border of Almería and Granada. They have been pushing for the iron ore extracted to be sent in trains to Almería port, and then loaded onto ships. They have even offered to fund a new underground link to the port. The previous use of the Almería port resulted in a lot of dust, and Almería council are not happy that this might happen again. The company have announced that initially the iron ore will be loaded onto ships at the Carboneras port from lorries, and later going to the Almería port in closed containers. Iron ore is now a valuable proposition to mine as the prices obtained are much higher than when the mine was shut down. The advanced plans are that the mine will be opened in

Return of The Panther Last year, various persons including the mayor, reported the existence and sighting of a black “panther” in the Berja area of Almería. Social media sites gave the large feline a name, and a considerable amount of money was spent in trying to capture the animal, with large traps, night time infra-red cameras, environmental agents and the 'Seprona' branch of the Guardia Civil police, (tasked with investigations in country areas), working in shifts. At one stage, a professional hunter was employed to try and track the animal down. After three months the search was called off as the baited traps were only visited by foxes and wild boars. The existence or whereabouts of this large feline were never officially proved, and there was no sign of sheep or goats being attacked, and no sign of any excrement over an area of 500 hectares. The only sign was one possible paw print. This July, a video was taken by a person in the Celín area of Dallas, part of the Almería Sierra de Gádor national park, showing a similar or identical creature, about one metre long. This video has been sent to the Guardia Civil police, and of course social media sites. An analysis of the video by animal experts has concluded that this feline animal is “probably” a large mountain cat, of a type normally found in the Alpujarra region of Almería.

New Cándido Trabalón Court case

The ex-mayor of Zurgena is being charged with a wide variety of planning illegalities, part of the “operation Costuero” major investigation in Zurgena. The new court case concerns blocks of apartments with a total of 202 dwellings and two swimming pools in La Alfoquía. The contention is that Cándido Trabalón was fully aware that no urban development on this land was allowed, and the height of the buildings were limited to two floors only. At the time of the application for the building licence in 2005, urban guidelines clearly showed that the project was illegal, and this was made known to the councillors, developers and the architect. They are in court together with the 7 councillors who approved the project at a council planning meeting. A prison term for the ex-mayor of 21 months is being requested, but this has little significance as prison terms in many other prosecutions amount to 800 years, with 1,000 years of a ban on holding public office! In 2013, fines to a total of 385,000 euros were issued, but only 162,000 euros was actually collected. This percentage of 42% is fairly normal as regards fines issued and paid. To achieve an actual income of 343,000 euros in 2014 with a similar 40% of fines collected, would mean that fines being issued would total 858,000 euros! This amounts to a daily average of 2,351 euros.

More Mojácar Tourists Mojácar and other areas in this Levante area have been short-listed for inclusion in the plan known as “Europe Senior Tourism 2014”. This scheme is designed for European tourists aged 55 or over, who will come to local hotels in the “low” season. Municipalities chosen are selected on the basis of the various tourist attractions for this age group. This plan started in Spain in 2009 when the Spanish tourist board company 'Segittur' joined the list of countries where this European tourist scheme takes place. It is considered that these tourists have slightly more spending power than the Spanish senior citizen tourists who come to this area as part of the national scheme.

Albox Motorway The missing 9 km link of the motorway known as the “marble motorway” continues to progress, after no action for two years. Susana Diaz the newly elected president of the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) recently visited the construction site as part of a visit to the area. She promised that the 6.8 million project would be completed by March 2015. Funds have been made available from the EU who have highlighted this project as being of major importance, worthy of grant aid. The remaining stretch from Cucador to the A7 motorway may possibly be similarly funded.

Present (Chinese) Arms! The legionnaire military base at Viator near Almería city, along with other units, take part in official events where ceremonial swords are in evidence. Traditionally they are made and supplied by a specialist company in Toledo, where swords have been made since Roman times. This company and the mayor of Toledo are up in arms because the Spanish Ministry of Defence has ordered 1,000 ceremonial swords, destined for military colleges from the Spanish agent of a sword supplier company in China. They claim that the difference in cost for each sword is only five euros, and consider that it is an outrage that the swords will be stamped “Made in China”, instead of “Hecho en Toledo” (Made in Toledo). The Toledo company also frequently supply swords for films.

The Carboneras 'Holcim' Cement Tragedy In 2007, a heavy discharge of coal from a large storage hopper killed five workers and injured three others who were all carrying out maintenance work at the 'Holcim' cement factory. A director of the company at the time, two persons in charge of health and safety at the plant, and the maintenance manager will appear in court next January, charged with negligence and causing the loss of lives. The Spanish health and safety authority consider that no proper periodic inspections of the inside of the hopper had been carried out, and a simple visual inspection would have revealed the corrosion that resulted in the accident. The hopper had been in use for 25 years, and a blockage was being cleared when the accident took place. The prosecutors maintain that the accident could have been predicted if a full survey had been carried out prior to this particular repair work being started, and appropriate health and safety procedure put in place.

So Now You Know... High Bird Flight Many sightings of birds flying within a height band up to 40,000 feet have been recorded. Often this applies to migrating birds covering very long distances. Rüppell vultures have been logged at 37,000 feet, seemingly looking over a very wide area for prey. The migrating Common Crane flies over the Himalayas at 33,000 feet to avoid attacks by eagles. The Bar Headed goose does the same thing at 29,000 feet. Aircraft radar has recorded a flock of Whooper swans at 27,000 feet above Northern Ireland. Much smaller Mallard ducks have also been seen at 21,000 feet over Nevada in the US. Birds flying at this height are still a real hazard for aircraft. A bird the size of a goose can totally wreck an aircraft engine if sucked in.

Satellite TV In the days of early TV's, magnetic tapes of programmes were shipped across the Atlantic so that US and UK viewers could share programmes. This all changed in 1962 when NASA launched the first telecommunication satellite called “Telstar”, built by the US company, AT&T. Tens of millions of viewers watched a slightly flickering black and white image of the Statue of Liberty simultaneously. A press conference with John F. Kennedy from the White House was due to be next, but a delay meant that viewers outside the US saw a live American football game for the first time, in the gap. A picture of Big Ben was then transmitted from the UK. The British group, “The Tornados”, had a US and UK number one hit called “Telstar” weeks later.

Paragliding Between 1952 and 1963 various people with some aeronautical knowledge worked on designing a aerofoil “wing” with closed sections to give enough lift to launch a person from a steep hill or mountain. An American patented a design in 1963 with opening vents at the front of the wing that were fully inflated in flight. Further work was done at NASA as a possible means of slowing a space capsule before it hit the water. In 1973, a group of enthusiasts broke away from the British Parachute Society and christened their designs “Paragliders”. The first unofficial Paragliding World Championship was held in Verbier (Switzerland) in 1987. Paragliding in Europe became an extremely fast growing activity with thousands of enthusiasts.

Super Moons “Super moon” is the name given to a full moon that coincides with the elliptical orbit being closest to earth. The technical name is the perigee-syzygy. When this happens, the moon size as viewed from earth is a14% larger disk and the brightness is also increased by 30%. The next super moon occurs on September 9th this year, and if you thought the moon was very bright on August 10th, this was a super moon as well. It has been claimed that super moons may be associated with increased risk of earthquakes and volcanic action, from both oceanic tide changes and crustal (earth crust) pressure. Modern opinion is that the case for such increased activity is not proven. The name “Super moon” was invented by the astrologist Richard Nolle in 1979.

Artificial Hearts The first artificial hearts were cumbersome devices intended to keep a person alive until a normal heart transplant could be done. In August 2006, an artificial heart known as “The Berlin heart” was implanted into a 15 yr old girl at a hospital in Alberta. After 164 days the girl's own heart had healed by natural processes and the device was removed. It was not approved for general use in the US until 2011. The same year, Matthew Green aged 40, became the first Briton to have an artificial heart implanted at Papworth hospital during a 7 hour operation. A French design using electrodes and chemically treated animal skin was inserted into a 75 year old man in 2013 in Paris. Unfortunately the man died after 74 days from rejection problems.

Bulldozers History shows that a bulldozer type blade was first put in use by being harnessed to two mules or oxen. They spread a pile of dirt dumped from a cart, or over a bank to fill a hole. An American, Benjamin Holt, invented an endless track or “caterpillar” for his steam traction engines in 1904, but the Hornsby company in the UK patented a steam engine with a caterpillar track about the same time. They steered the steam engine by controlling the power to each track. In 1913, Hornsby sold their patent to Benjamin Holt. It is thought that a French company, La Plante-Choate, were the first manufacturers who adapted their caterpillar steam engines to carry a blade. The term “bulldozing” came to mean pushing an idea or plan through all obstacles.

Almería Red Cross 150th Anniversary

n August 8th, the Almería “Cruz Roja” (Red Cross) association celebrated the 150th anniversary of their formation in 1864. Although their local headquarters and vehicles are a familiar sight, many people are unclear how they operate and what they do. Originally, in common with other International Red Cross organizations, the Spanish National Association provided field hospitals in war situations. Key members from all parts of Spain including Almería can be sent to war torn regions and provide humanitarian assistance in times of famine or natural disasters. Only a small fraction of government or regional monetary aid is received by the Red Cross, acting along with other agencies to provide assistance with violence to women and children, help for persons with drug problems and the HIV virus. Their main income is from companies, businesses and individuals who make regular donations. In Almería province, this amounts to nearly 10,000 associates. Only a handful of key personnel receive any monetary income, and their skilled volunteers now number in the region of 2,000. In 2013, they provided assistance to 57,000 people. The president of the Almería province organization, José Carlos, who attended a special reception at Almería town hall to mark their anniversary, stressed that the Red Cross were not concerned with where people who needed help came from, what their religion was, or the colour of their skin. Their ambulances, other vehicles, and staff, provide essential aid when help is needed with assistance at times of major events such as the floods at Pueblo Laguna in 2012. They also transport non-critical patients to hospital if the local ambulance service cannot respond to every call out. Doctors and nurses provide medical help from their local headquarters in the high season summer period, particularly in coastal areas, for problems caused by jelly fish, sunstroke, or minor injuries. In coastal towns and villages that do not have a civil defence unit they also provide lifeguard services with people trained in sea rescue. In this coastal area a vital function is the immediate response to the rescue and reception of would be immigrants rescued at sea from their

overloaded and unseaworthy craft. Health checks are given to these people, with treatment for dehydration and particular attention to the many young children involved, along with clothing. A very recent activity is the checking of these immigrants, usually of African origin, who may unknowingly carry the Ebola virus.

Helping the homeless

In these times of economic hardship, the Red Cross provides more and more assistance to the poorest sections of society, suffering from financial hardship, hunger or homelessness. They arrange temporary foster homes for children whose parents can no longer administer the basic care needed. They also provide home visits to elderly people living alone, and organize transport and help. They also work to re-instate persons into employment, with training if needed. Juan Carlos laments the fact that more and more people are falling into the area where no state assistance is available and are suffering the consequent hardships. Their work to provide clothing and food to homeless people is becoming a vital requirement, with more and more people asking for help. They always welcome people who can spare time to be volunteers for any of their roles, and will provide training. Apart from their associates who donate regularly, the Red Cross hold lotteries to raise money, with tickets available in post offices, and many shops. Juan Carlos stresses that financial help from the general public is vital. He asks that you buy their lottery tickets, respond to special appeals, and put money in their collection boxes.

An Abysmal Lack of Action

eptember 28th is the second anniversary of the tremendous and catastrophic flooding at Pueblo Laguna, Puerto Rey and Cuevas. This date is engraved in the memory of hundreds of people who lost possessions, cars and businesses, and had to cope with the terrible aftermath of water and mud. Apart from the immediate problem for the homeless, four people tragically lost their lives including the much loved English therapist, Diana Dudas. To the casual observer or tourist, the boulevard from Las Buganvillas to the end of Pueblo Laguna looks fine. Major restoration of essential services was followed by embellishments to the roadside, carried out by Vera town hall. Closer inspection reveals a few business premises and houses that have never re-opened or been lived in since. Apart from a bridge washed away in the village of Los Lobos that has never been repaired, roads and bridges including those damaged on the A7 motorway and the AP7 toll road, were quickly repaired. So on the surface everything looks fine. In reality, the state of the river bed from Antas to the mouth of the river bed in Pueblo Laguna and Puerto Rey is now as bad, or worse, than it was in September two years ago. No action has been taken to remove the dead and existing vegetation, dredging, or the reinforcing of the sides of the river bed to ensure a proper channel for flood water is in place. This abysmal lack of action involves Vera town hall, the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province), and central government. Vera town hall have repeatedly asked that urgent work is carried out, and in all fairness the situation is not their responsibility or something they can put in hand themselves, even if they had the money. The cleaning and dredging of the river beds is the responsibility of the Junta, whilst the work necessary to reinforce the sides falls within the ambit of central government, as part of a national hydro plan that deals with work relating to water and rivers.

When, in August last year, a young lady finished up in intensive care after falling down a steep drop at the time of the “Dreambeach” music festival, the mayor of Cuevas pointed out that the access to the road alongside the river bed had been closed off to motor traffic by the creating of an earth bank, but this young lady was taking a short cut back to the campsite. He pointed out that Cuevas town hall could not make repairs to this damage themselves, although they greatly regretted this accident. In 2008, Vera town hall suggested that their multi-service company 'Codeur' could carry out the cleaning and dredging of the river bed with the authorization from the Junta de Andalucía who would then foot the bill. This was not forthcoming, partly because the Junta considered that Vera town hall might well then build houses on adjoining land. Almost certainly the houses built between Pueblo Laguna and Puerto Rey nearest to the road and bridge should never have been located there. Experts in flood prediction and flood plains were quick to point this out after the 2012 deluge.

The association of owners, 'Veraplayazul' recently held a protest meeting to try to force some action to be taken, and have lodged a formal complaint with Andalucían “Defensor del Pueblo”, a body that accepts complaints from parties such as this association, and can put pressure on administrative bodies that are legally binding. Substantial funding needs to be made available and major work undertaken urgently.

“AVE” Anger

No representatives from any political party or central government were invited to the meeting and strong words were expressed that politicians and the Ministry of Transport should stop “lying” and “prevaricating” about the completion of the line. The “immediate” resumption of work was “demanded”, along with the original plan for a double track line and related infrastructure to be set into operation. Harsh criticism was made that of the project cost of 1,902 million euros for the high speed train to arrive at Almería from Lorca, only 611 million euros had been allocated for actual work. Regarding the cost of the complete link from Murcia to Almería, a total of 2,500 million euros, only 27% of the necessary work has been done. They accused central government and the rail authorities of “burying their heads in the sand like an ostrich!” Since 2008, the only work that has been completed in Almería province has been the provision of the track base from the outskirts of Garrucha to Los Arejas, the other side of Sorbas. This work includes the extremely expensive twin 7.6 km tunnels, then

The representatives at the meeting also complained bitterly that a leaked memo from the Ministry of Transport suggested that sums of money set aside for the Murcia to Almería link should be siphoned off for other rail projects. The existence of this memo was confirmed, but it was stated to be purely a “discussion document.” A new study is being prepared to see what savings could be made if the twin track was substituted for a single track only. The protest meeting was totally opposed to this, and it would mean that only two of the four enormously expensive tunnels would be put into use. The completed design project for the station at Vera is also subject to a “revision”. Since 2009, the finishing date of the line to Almería city has been given as every following year, with a latest “estimate” of “if not by 2018, certainly 2019!” 2015 is general election year in Spain, and the manifesto signed by all parties at the end of this protest meeting will hopefully result in some action. If nothing happens, the description of Almería province was stated to be “a continuing island”. Feelings ran high!

What’s On Vera Art Festival and Concerts Vera town is hosting an Arts Festival and concerts on the weekend of September 12th-14th. Artists, crafts people, painters, sculptors, wood and metal workers and jewellery makers amongst others are invited to display their work, in what is intended to be a very large exhibition of art & craft items for sale. The proceeds go to the Vera Red Cross. The event will be open from 6pm to midnight each day. What a Lovely War” from September 20th-23rd at the Miraflores campsite, and on September 28th & 29th at the Pedro Gileber t Museum at Arboleas. This is a satirical musical, showing the futility of war (in this case WWI), as seen by a pierrot group at an “end of the pier” show. Tickets cost 10 euros from the Camping Los Gallardos shop, PC

Playa Mojácar, Connexions in Turre, and Olive Properties in Bédar for the first performances and One Stop Pools (Longos), Girasol Albox, and Essentials in Arboleas for the Arboleas performances. Proceeds go to the “Help for Heroes” fund and the Royal British Legion. Villaricos Archaeological Site Villaricos is the site of an important Phoenician and Punic village that dates back to 800 BC. The site is at the mouth of the Almanzora river bed and features an area where dried fish were prepared, local esparto grass woven, and there was a foundry area, together with a burial site. The Romans also occupied the site as well. Excavations were made during the 20th century by a famous local historian, Luis Siret. Cuevas town hall and the cultural department of the Junta de Andalucía have jointly cleaned up distinct areas of the site, and made it suitable for visitors. It is now open to the public, and is centred near to the watch tower Excavations at Villaricos

Exhibitions The 'CAF' Andalucían Centre of Photography in Almería city has an exhibition until September 14th entitled “La Rinconada” with personalized photographs and videos by the Chilean photographer, Magdelena Correa. La Rinconada is a village in Chile situated 5,600 metres above sea level. The 'CAF' centre is at Calle Pintor Díaz Molina, 9 Almería city and is open every day from 11am2pm & 5.30pm-9.30pm. “Platero y los Artistas” is an exhibition at the Vera Convento de la Victoria until September 27th. It features illustrations from the literary work of the same name, by Juan Ramón commemorating his 100 year anniversary. Opening times are Mon-Fri, 11am-1pm & 5.30pm-8pm, Saturdays 11am1.30pm. “Nuestros Pueblos, el Patrimonio Almeriense a Través de la Imagen” (The Almería heritage through images of towns and villages) is an exhibition of photographs taken by the 'Indalofoto' group, and can be seen at the art gallery of the Almería Archaeological museum, Carretera de Ronda, 91 Almería city, until October 5th.

What’s On Miscellaneous The 2014 Arboleas Walk for Life takes place on September 27th with music and entertainment from 4pm, and a dog show at 7pm after the walk. All funds raised go to provide support for cancer patients. Sponsorship forms are available from Sophia's Wellness Centre Arboleas, Amigo Bowling Centre, Total Entertainment Albox, and CAT Services La Alfoquía. The Bédar 6th annual Hippies street party is on September 6th, based at the bar El Cortijo. There is a photo shoot on the zebra crossing for lookalike Beatles, along with a dog naming competition and live music and a disco. Hippy garb is optional, or wear sunflower themed clothes. A wife rang her husband when he was very late home because they were eating out with friends. “Where the hell are you?”. Her husband replied, “Darling, you remember that jewellery shop where you fell in love with that diamond necklace? I said I would save up, and one day it would be yours, my baby” The wife was really sorry for shouting at him and replied softly, “Yes I remember it well”. Her husband then said, “Well I'm in the pub next door”.

A new till assistant was being trained in a shop. The manager said to him, “We have a special sale on next week, everything will be reduced to one dollar, so remember that and say, 'That will be one dollar'. Near the till we always have a few do-nuts. If a customer asks if they are fresh, you reply 'As fresh as fresh can be'. If a customer is not sure about something and asks you if they should buy it, you reply, 'If you don't somebody else will'”. The man practised these replies all weekend. On Monday everything seems fine but then a burglar comes in with a gun. The burglar says, “I want the money!” The assistant replies, “That will be one dollar”. The burglar says, “Are you getting fresh with me?” The assistant replies, “As fresh as fresh can be”. The burglar, getting really angry, says, “Do you want me to shoot you?” The assistant replies, “If you don't somebody else will”. So the burglar shot him and took the money.

The Hotel Three businessmen are staying at a hotel for a convention, and their room is on the 30th floor. After a drink and dinner they find the lifts are out of order. Tom says. “I will crack jokes for the first 10 floors, to make it easier”. Bill says, “I will tell you happy real stories for the next 10 floors”. Jim says, “I will think of some really sad stories for the last 10 floors; it will totally take your minds off the last flights up”. Climbing up the first 10 floors of stairs is really hard work, but Tom manages to tell jokes between gasps. The next 10 floors of stairs slows them down considerably, but Bill tries to keep telling happy stories. There is a long pause and panting before the last 10 floors of stairs, but they keep going. As they reach their floor totally exhausted, Jim says, “My last..... sad story..... is that I forgot to pick up the room key........ off the table in the bar!”.

The Problem A large hospital realised that every Sunday morning a patient died in their intensive care unit after they were steadily recovering from their illness. A meeting was called with the hospital administrator, senior surgeons, and the highly qualified nursing staff. No-one could come up with a convincing explanation. Eventually it was decided that the only idea they had was for a doctor and a nurse to give extra cover the next Sunday morning, and see if there was another emergency. Sure enough, about 10am, the alarms went off at the nursing station, indicating a life threatening emergency. The doctor and nurse rushed to the room and saw Kevin, the Sunday cleaner, mopping the floor, with his mobile 'phone on charge from the main wall socket... with the plug of the life support equipment lying at its side.

Good Behaviour The mother of a large family lined up her children one Monday morning. “Now, the one who obeys me the quickest and does exactly as they are told, without arguing, will get five euros at the end of the week”. “It‘s not fair,” said the youngest one, after some thought. “Why not?” “Daddy will win easily!”

...and next... The Melons A farmer in the country has a ripe watermelon patch, but he keeps finding that some of the local kids have been helping themselves. The farmer wonders how he can discourage the thefts, and he puts up a sign that reads: “WARNING! ONE OF THESE WATERMELONS CONTAINS CYANIDE!". Late next evening he hides and watches the kids stop, read the sign, and then run off without taking any of his melons. He is well pleased with his plan. Two days later, the farmer returns to the watermelon patch, to see how many more are ripe for picking. He finds another sign that reads: "NOW THERE ARE TWO!" Tricky

What Do You Mean? A very shy guy goes into a bar and sees a beautiful woman sitting at the bar. After gathering up his courage, he finally goes over to her and asks, tentatively, "Um, would you mind if I chatted with you for a while?" To which she responds by yelling, at the top of her lungs, "No, I won't sleep with you tonight! We just met!" -- which causes everyone in the bar to turn and stare at them in silent shock. Naturally, the guy is hopelessly and completely embarrassed and he slinks back to his table. After a few minutes when everyone has gone back to their own business, the woman walks over to him. She smiles at him and says, "I'm sorry if I embarrassed you." "You sure did," the guy says. "What was that all about?" "Well," she says, "I'm a graduate student in psychology and I'm studying how people respond to embarrassing situations." To which he responds, at the top of his lungs, "There's no way you're worth a thousand dollars for one night!"

A teacher, a doctor and a lawyer all die in an aircraft crash. When they reach the pearly gates, St. Peter tells them that unfortunately, heaven is quite overcrowded. So they each have to answer a question correctly to get in.
