Excellent Vaccination News

pain leads EU countries in the number of people fully vaccinated which was 75% on Friday, September 17th, compared to the average of 60%. Spain is also ahead of the UK where children aged 12-15 are to be vaccinated shortly, and it is “hoped” that parents will encourage their children to do this. Spanish schools have re-opened, and in a news item we explain that COVID-19 safety measures are still in place. As regards the age group 12-19 in Spain, 84% had received the first dose and 63% were fully vaccinated. On the same date in the UK, only 52% of the age group 18-29 were fully vaccinated. The European Medical Agency are expected to approve the reduced strength Pfizer vaccine for the age group 0-11 very soon, and Spain is preparing to start these vaccinations. Figures are very good in our autonomous community of Andalucía and numbers published on Sunday, September 19th relating to Friday, September 17th were that 77% of the population were fully vaccinated and 91% over the age of 12 had received their first dose, with over 1 million vaccinations dispensed in Almería province. Residents of Spain have embraced the idea that vaccinations are a very good thing to have, and there have been no major anti-COVID-19 vaccination demonstrations like those that have taken place in France. The cost of electricity bills is still very much in the news, and last month we explained why there is a wide fluctuation from day to day. In an article this month we explain the measures the Spanish government have put in place to try to reduce the cost, and future objectives. This is not a problem unique to Spain, but prices here are more than in other EU countries. On the weekend of September 18th-19th energy bosses in the UK met up with government representatives to try to ensure that prices could be controlled. The meetings were described as “routine”, but as they took place over the weekend, this was obviously not true. The major provider of turkeys, Bernard Matthews, is warning people that turkeys may well

be in short supply this Christmas if the cost of gas remains high and CO2 supplies dry up. CO2 is essential for the humane slaughter of turkeys and refrigeration cooling.

The relaxation in COVID-19 tests for UK residents who have been fully vaccinated is obviously good news, but they still apply to the non-vaccinated tourists. As can be seen from some of the statistics we give above, there are still many people who are not fully vaccinated. As we mention in an ‘In the News” item, the percentage numbers given in the UK were initially just for adults, but are now from age 16. In Spain the percentage numbers relate to the whole population, not just an age group. October 12th in Spain is a national fiesta date, ‘Día de la Hispanidád’, that was formerly ‘Christopher Columbus Day’. In our July magazine we detailed extensive research being done at Granada University to establish his true identity and nationality, and their conclusion will be published on October 12th. Monday, November 1st is a national fiesta date to celebrate ‘All Saints Day’ to remember those who have died. People go to the cemetery, spruce up the niches belonging to their relatives, take flowers and light hundreds of candles. October 7th is a fiesta day in Mojácar as it is the saint’s day, ‘Virgen de Rosario’, the female patron saint, and Turre have a fiesta through the first weekend in October in honour of their patron saint, St. Francis of Assisi. The clocks go back one hour on October 31st.

In the News La Palma Volcanic Eruption After 10 days and over 16,000 tremors that increased in intensity, the Cumbre Vieja volcano near the southwest coast of La Palma in the Canary Islands erupted at 3pm on September 19th. Seismologists and geologists put the epicentre of the eruption 6km below the surface with an intensity on the Richter scale of 4.2. Residents in the immediate area were on an orange alert for the evacuation plan that was immediately put in place. There are no large centres of population and the plan called for the initial evacuation of 1,000 people, then 2,000, then 5,000 with a potential for a total of 10,000 people. In one of the six municipalities where 700 people were evacuated, 500 of them were tourists staying in a hotel. There were eruptions from nine different fissures, and lava flow destroyed houses and cut off roads. On September 21st it was reported that 183 houses had been destroyed and the number was increasing every hour. The damage to property, infrastructure and agriculture was described as being “enormous.” The latest major eruption was at a new site 900m from the main ones and volcanologists stated that there might well be some activity over a period of two to three months. This volcano last erupted in 1971, was very active for ten days and claimed one life. Pedro Sánchez, the Spanish Prime Minister, postponed plans to go to New York and went to the scene. The UME, the special branch of the Spanish army that deal solely with different types of emergencies, were mobilised and went there on a specially chartered ferry.

125,000 Cannabis Plants Seized The Guardia Civil Police have a department called ‘Seprona’ who deal with agriculture, cultivation matters such as compliance with insecticide regulations, animal bird and marine welfare, and spotting illegal houses built on land that is specially protected. In early September they concluded an operation that started when it was determined that a claim that cannabis was being grown for industrial and medical use in an agricultural unit under cover in Níjar was not true. Raids revealed that there were 125,000 cannabis plants from 1 to 1.5m tall in seven large units, that makes it the largest cannabis farm discovered in Spain. A further raid was carried out at another unit where the cannabis was being dried and made ready for transport. The production of cannabis for industrial or medical use in Spain is strictly controlled with special growing and export licences as there is no company in Spain that is authorised to carry out the next stages. Following the raids six people appeared in court and were released on bail.

Vehicle Documentation The ‘DGT’ (Spanish traffic authority) are reminding drivers that they need to have certain documentation that they can show to police if they are stopped. The most important, of course, is a current driving licence that is applicable to the type of vehicle you are driving. The next one is the ‘Permiso de circulación’ that is renewed every time a vehicle changes hands and shows the registered owner and their address. If a vehicle has to have the periodic ‘ITV’(MOT) tests there has to be the document from when it was last tested. The stickers on windscreens show the year and the month when the next test is due, but the

document from the ITV centre has more information, such as the mileage when it was last tested, and a photograph of the vehicle with the numberplate. The fourth document is not strictly necessary, and this is the insurance paperwork that shows the current premium has been paid. Traffic police can tell from information available to them via their onboard computers, as to whether there is a policy in force and with which company. Their advice however is that it is a good idea to keep the current paperwork in the vehicle showing when the insurance was last renewed and the dates it is in force. If a driver pays for the renewal of their policy with a direct debit from a bank account, some insurance companies will not automatically provide the up-to-date paperwork. If not, you should ask your insurance company to email this to you, or collect it from their offices.

Mojácar Lighthouse in Action On September 22nd the lighthouse in Garrucha went out of services after 140 years, and the new one in Mojácar took over. The lighthouse is on the highest point behind Marina de la Torre and Mojácar will feature on all new maritime maps. Apart from a linked equipment storage facility there is a viewing area and small garden. The land was donated by Mojácar town hall.

Another Change in Inheritance Laws In recent years there have been important changes in the inheritance laws in Andalucía that have greatly benefitted inheritors. A few years ago, if a person inherited a property that was the main home of the person who died, they could not sell it for 10 years without incurring a tax based on the value. This was then reduced to two years, but from September 3rd there is no time limit at all. This is good news, particularly with the recent rise in house prices. The amount of inheritance tax in Andalucía is now nil in the case of a direct relative who inherits from their spouse or a parent, with an upper limit on the amount of money that is very generous at no more than 1 million euros per inheritor. For people in a non-married partnership that is considered stable, where there is the intention that property or goods will be left to the other partner in a will, it is essential that they register themselves as being a ‘pareja de hecho’,

In the News which is a civil partnership. This can be done through almost all town halls in Spain, providing that at least one of the persons is on the ‘padrón’ (the official list of inhabitants in a municipality). This ensures that the two people in the partnership have the same inheritance rights as a married couple. If not, as there is no direct legal relationship, the amount of inheritance tax can be very high, and without a will family members take precedence. Businesses in Spain that deal with legal matters will help people to process this registration. Apart from inheritance tax exemption, a ‘pareja de hecho’ gives rights to a widow’s pension.

More Wind Turbine Blades The company ‘Eblades Technology SL’ in Granada has contracts to supply wind turbine blades to a large German company. They transport them with great difficulty on special lorries to Almería port, where they are shipped to the Cuxhaven port in Germany. During early September 18 blades came to the port, three of them 40m in length, and the other 15 were 61m in length. Each lorry can transport two blades and they have a police escort, travelling during the night to minimise traffic problems. When being loaded onto the ship two very large cranes carefully do this in tandem.

An Italian TV Documentary The ‘RAI Due’ television channel in Italy is the second largest with an audience of more than 2 million. They recently came to Almería and the Tabernas region to make a film entitled ‘Kalipe’ about the Sergio Leone “spaghetti western” films made at Tabernas and the Clint Eastwood trilogy, “A Fist-full of Dollars”, “For a Few Dollars More” and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”. They also toured the location where “Once upon a Time in the West” was filmed and “Duck, you Sucker!”, the last film made by Sergio Leone. The film crew and their director spent several days filming in the area highlighting the natural beauty of the desert and the special daytime light that fascinated Sergio Leone. The filming was organised by the Almeria Province Tourist Office, the Andalucía Tourist Department and the Spanish ‘Turespaña’ organisation working with the ‘OET’ office in Rome. A spokesperson from the Almería Tourist Office stated that the

documentary would be an important introduction to ‘Costa Almería’ and ‘Almería land of film’ for Italian viewers, and he was sure that Italian film-buffs would want to come to Almería themselves.

Major Transplants in Spain Despite the pandemic, Spain led the transplant figures world-wide for the 29th year, and carried out 20% of all transplants in the EU, with a population that is only 9%. As in other years, the numbers in Spain were twice that of all transplants in Canada and Australia. In 2020, not a typical year, donors were 38 per 1 million head of population that is a very good figure in the circumstances, and is only a drop of 22% compared to 2019. With multiple organ donations, the number of transplants in Spanish hospitals is 95 per 1 million. In theory, in Spain, people have to “opt out” of organ donation, but in practice this is not the case at all. Following a death in a hospital relatives are approached to see if they will agree to transplants, and the numbers who agree are a very high percentage. The deceased person may have told their relatives that they want to be donors, or they carry the Spanish donor card. Since 2019 all adults in the UK are presumed to have agreed for transplants to be made, unless they have specifically opted out.

Back To School Spain is taking a very different path to the UK, where the only thing happening when pupils return to school is regular testing with all restrictions lifted. The Spanish Education Minister has announced that “until the situation improves”, the restrictions in Spanish schools will be the same as those in place at the end of the last school year. Children over the age of six have to wear masks with “bubble” groups and a 1.2m social distance. Ventilation of the classrooms has to be in place with a “cross-flow” if possible, from one side to the other. There will still be staggered entry and exit times and at playtimes and mealtimes, if this applies. Before the schools went back, 84% of persons aged 12-19 had received at least one vaccination and 63% were double vaccinated. In the News under the age of 11 in Spain will be vaccinated at schools, nurseries and health centres. Before this can happen, the European Medical Agency have to approve the use of this special vaccine from Pfizer that has completed all the trials and is of a reduced strength. Throughout Spain, 11% of the population is in the age group 0-11 that amounts to 4.5 million, and in Andalucía it is 13.5%. It is considered sensible to vaccinate young children to try and get 90% of the population vaccinated which is the new percentage that is considered necessary to give “herd” immunity.

The European Medical Agency has stated that a booster jab for pensioners in general is not considered to be necessary at this time, and the protection against getting COVID-19 a second time, for people who had the full vaccination, is still very high. Pfizer have already started distribution of their booster vaccine that is different to the normal ones, and is being administered in some countries including the UK.

The Tabernas Almería Western Film Festival The 11th year of this festival takes place from October 8th-11th. The event takes place in Tabernas and the filming locations at Oasys Mini Hollywood and Fort Bravo Texas. The Italian actor Franco Nero, born in 1941, has been selected to receive the Tabernas Film Garland for 2021. He has appeared in 220 films and five major western films at Tabernas in the 1960s and 1970s. He became famous in 1966 when he starred in the film ‘Adiós Texas’ directed by Ferdinando Baldi. The actor has stated that western films are in his blood, and he is delighted to come to Tabernas to receive his prize and return to Almería. As in other years, the organisers are very late in publishing their full programme.

Third Vaccinations The Spanish Health Minister announced in early September that following approval from the European Medical Agency it was intended that booster vaccinations were introduced. This would have applied to pensioners and those people suffering from an immune deficiency. A few days later, the European Medical Agency approved a third vaccination of the normal type, not a booster vaccination, for people with immune deficiency. In Spain there are 100,000 people which includes 60,000 that have had organ transplants, 20,000 that have had a bone marrow transplant, and people receiving special drugs that decrease their immune response from chemotherapy, multiple sclerosis and some rheumatoid arthritis treatment. The various health authorities in the autonomous communities immediately started notifying these people that a

Vélez Blanco Castle Patio The 16th century castle at Vélez Blanco is considered an outstanding example of the architectural renaissance period. There was a large two storey screen that separated the military area from the domestic area known as the “Patio de Honor”. It was built by Italian workers who used the white marble from Macael. In 1904 the complete patio screen was dismantled and sold to a French art merchant who sold it on to the American millionaire and art lover George Blumenthal. On his death he donated it to the New York Metropolitan Museum, where it remains on display. The Junta de Andalucía bought the castle in 2005 as it is considered a cultural jewel of great significance, and suggestions were made that a replica patio screen was constructed. In 2008 during hours when the museum was shut, Spanish technicians completed a complete 3-D scan that cost 246,000 euros, and the cost of the replica screen is given as

In July 2019 the Cultural Department of the Junta de Andalucía announced that they were applying for European grants to cover the cost, and they hoped this would be forthcoming in the period 2021-2026. The organisation “Friends of Vélez Blanco Castle” are trying to put pressure on the Junta de Andalucía to come up with a concrete proposal with an early date for the work being started, and they organised a large petition this August. Various marble companies in Macael have agreed to donate the marble needed for the reconstruction.

The EU Cancels Their AstraZenica Boycott When the initial doses of the AstraZenica vaccine ordered by the EU were not delivered in the contract time period, the EU went to court. AstraZenica agreed to step up production and complete the delivery, but the EU stated that they were not giving the company any more orders. In early September the EU announced that they had negotiated with AstraZenica the purchase of 200 million doses and had been assured that they would all be delivered on time. The advantage of the AstraZenica vaccine is that compared to other vaccines it is very much cheaper, and doses do not need special freezing.

From Seville to Kabul Televised pictures of military aircraft collecting people from Kabul airport showed the military version of the Airbus, the A4000M. These planes are quite distinct as they have four propellors and they are all assembled in Seville. Ones in use came from the Spanish Ministry of Defence and the RAF. The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, granted a request from President Biden that planes could land at La Rota US base in Cádiz, and the Móron de la Frontera base near Seville, and the 4,000 refugees were then transported to the US during the next 14 days. Specialist army personnel from the Spanish UME division, who deal solely with emergencies such as forest fires, earthquakes and major flooding, erected marquee-type structures to house the refugees. Following the earthquake in Lorca, the UME designed and built a modular fibreglass structure with electricity connected and air-conditioning, capable of housing people for a six-month period if necessary. They can be transported and put in use in a matter of hours.

COVID-19 Figures In Almería Province The Health Authorities in Almería province announced in September that during the pandemic there has been a total of 900 deaths. The number of people admitted to the three hospitals was 4,300, and 740 of these were in intensive care. 70% of these needed to be put on a respirator, which was a major factor of the disease, owing to severe breathing difficulties, and 30% of these people died with complications due to age and factors such as obesity. María Isabel Rodríguez Higueras, who is the spokesperson for the health authority intensive care units, stressed that whilst the vaccinations were very effective in combating serious illness, they were not a complete solution. Since vaccination started, 40% of people in intensive care had received one dose of the vaccines, or both. María urges people to continue with good practices such as hand washing, avoiding crowds, wearing a mask outdoors where there are a lot of people (such as markets) and observing sensible social distancing. She stressed that hospitals were still refining their treatment of COVID-19 that is continually evolving as they learnt more about the effects of the disease and their response to drugs and other procedures.

No Problems with Brexit In the first six months of 2021, exports from Almería province went up by 10% compared to 2020 with sales of 2.7 billion euros. Europe was the major market with 690 million euros from goods destined for Germany, and despite Brexit, exports to the UK totalled 380 million euros which was a rise of 32%. Sales to France are usually more than the UK and these came to 337 billion euros that was still an increase on the 2020 figures. The USA has become a major market with 200 million euros of goods that was up 38%. Sales to Israel only accounted to 21 million euros, but this is 2.5 times the amount obtained in 2020. Fruit and veg sales amounted to just under 60% of all sales, followed by dried fruit, stone (including synthetic surfaces), yeso (gypsum), ceramic goods, manufactured plastic items, flowers and plants. Paying With Plastic and Tips During the pandemic there has been a large increase in clients paying with credit or debit cards, particularly in the bar and restaurant trade. It is now quite normal that 70%-80% of clients paying for a meal have decided to use their cards instead of cash. A spokesperson for the Spanish Association of Restaurant owners thinks that in general this is a

good thing, as employees presenting a bill habitually do this along with a credit card machine, and the transaction only needs one journey, instead of up to three with a cash payment. A feature of the new method of paying is that clients are still leaving tips from loose change they have in their pockets. There was an initial fear that tips might go down drastically which affects the extra money that employees are given, but this is not the case. Tourists are still the best tippers!

The Cost of Insurance For Cars A Spanish search-engine giving the cost of car insurance has published a league table of the most expensive and the cheapest cars to insure, using figures from the ‘Association of Vehicle Insurers’. Surprisingly, the most expensive one is the Audi 80 car from the 1990s as spare parts are very expensive and in short supply. The amounts they quote are the basic cost without any discounts, and for the Audi it is 1,400 euros. The next most expensive are the Subaru Impreza costing 1,200 euros and the Nissan 350Z costing 1,170 euros. There are a lot of accidents with these cars partly because they are popular with younger drivers. The BMW Series 7 and the Audi A7 Sportback are both slightly over the 1,100 euros cost despite their level of equipment and initial purchase price. The cheapest car to insure is the Lada Niva that will cost about 260 euros, followed by the Suzuki Samurai at 280 euros and then the Seat Marbella that will cost about 320 euros.

Less ATM Bank Machines During the pandemic, various bank branches have closed after fusions with other banks, and there are far fewer ATM machines. This also applies to many that were in shopping centres, train and bus stations. Members of the public have used the cash points a lot less than in 2019, as health advice was not to handle notes and coins if this could be avoided. Since the pandemic there are 1,700 less terminals so the total has come down to 49,000, slightly more than in 2012, but in 2008 there were 62,000. Measuring Time In the 2nd millennium, the Babylonians adopted a numbering system of base 60 from the Sumerians. It used multiples of 1, 60 and 3,600 that each had their own written down columns. They applied this to daily life and it was used for the number of degrees in a circle and the number of days in a year. In 1990 the tower was found to be 5.5 degrees off the vertical and major work took place from 19932001 that reduced it down to 3.3 degrees. The First Video Games The first video game was invented by Willy Higginbotham. In the early 1940s he worked on advanced radar displays for B28 bombers and went on to work for the Manhattan Project where he designed the timing mechanism for the first atomic bomb. In 1958, bored at work one day, he designed a tennis game simulation, the world’s first video game, called ‘Tennis for Two’. Game development on main frame computers continued through the years, with ‘Spacewar!’ being one of the first and certainly one of the best-known games. Launched in 1962, it was programmed by Steven Russell on a DEC PDP-1 mainframe computer. Washington’s Birth Year In September 1752, the Julian calendar was replaced with the Gregorian calendar in Great Britain and its American colonies. It was eleven days behind the Gregorian calendar, so September 14th followed September 2nd on the day of the change. September 3rd to the 13th didn’t exist. This affected the US President George Washington who was born on February 11th, 1731, but the anniversary of his birth is February 22nd because of the eliminated eleven days. At the same time, New Year’s Day was changed from March 25th to January 1st. This meant that according to the new calendar, Washington was born in 1732!

A Predicted Tsunami

be level 7. The really bad-news conclusion is that a very major vertical movement earthquake of the same intensity would cause a tsunami that could be 6m high in the area from Adra to Motril, reducing down to 2m as it reached the coast of Málaga and Melilla.

lmería province has had many earthquakes and tremors and one of the most serious was in November 1518 at Vera. There had been tremors since the June, but the November earthquake effectively levelled Vera to the extent that the city was moved to a new location, with 165 people killed. Other places affected that June and July were Albox, Cantoria and Huércal-Overa, and during the November earthquake part of the city wall and ten houses were demolished in Mojácar. The major continual hotspot is in the Alborán sea off the coastal town of Adra, 50km from Almería city in the area of the province known as El Poniente. In September 1522, there was an earthquake in the sea that seismologists have calculated to be 6.5 on the Richter scale, and in 1804 a major earthquake in the sea has been estimated to be level 6.7. Any earthquake above 6.5 is very serious and as a comparison, the 2011 earthquake in Lorca city that very severely damaged 5% of all buildings, with nine deaths, was 5.2 on the scale.

Adra coast

The latest tremors and a 5.1 earthquake took place at the end of August, and during July and August seismologists measured 1,500 “events” that always affect the coastal areas of Motril, Granada, Málaga and Melilla to a lesser extent. The major activity in the Alborán sea is caused by the Al-Adrissi / Alverros fault that extends for 100km. The tectonic plate of Iberíca, part of the Eurasian one, and the African plate continually move horizontally against each other, up to 5mm a year.

Adra town hall has had special regulations in place for many years that require the structural strength of new buildings to be able to withstand earthquakes, and the police, civil defence, fire service and the Red Cross have periodic training sessions designed to ensure a quick response. A team of 300 people, with operatives drafted in from other areas, assume that there has been an earthquake that measures 5 on the Richter scale with the epicentre 2km below the surface of the sea. They practice how to deal with 300 people that would be in need of major and minor medical assistance, large numbers of homeless people who would need immediate help in temporary accommodation such as special marquees, and how to react to the loss of services.

A major study by seismologists and geologists has been published in the journal ‘Scientific Reports’. Their conclusion after extensive computer modelling and the study of previous events is that there is a distinct possibility of a vertical movement of the two plates, and if it was 7 on the Richter scale it would cause a tsunami. Their research and mapping of the Alborán seabed and rock samples, concludes that this happened in 365AD with a vertical movement of 5.4m that would certainly

The seismologists are convinced that their computer modelling is completely accurate, but it cannot predict when a tsunami will occur. Their conclusion is that there might only be a period of 20-35 minutes from the earthquake to the tsunami arriving. The report emphasises that “early warning” systems as they exist today are not capable of giving a meaningful prior warning, and better ones need to be put in place as a matter of urgency.

Reducing the Cost of Electricity

In an article last month, we explained how the cost of electricity and gas is fixed every 24hrs following a “pool” auction for supply and demand, and is expressed as the cost of 1 Mw/h (1 million watts for one hour). We explained that on two days in August this cost had risen to 117.4 euros per Mw/h that was extremely high. This paled into insignificance on September 17th when the price had steadily gone up to the hourly average of 188 euros per Mw/h, more than three times the price of 55.5 euros on September 17th 2020. It has been announced that urgent investigation will be undertaken to reduce our reliance on the “pool” system that fluctuates so much. Our bills reflect the way electricity is produced, and on September 15th when the cost was 172 euros per Mw/h, wind farms only provided 6% of the electricity needed. Last January 31st, the cost of 1Mw/h was 89 céntimos, as wind farms provided 48% of electricity, 8% came from photovoltaic (solar) panels, 21% from nuclear power stations, and no electricity was needed from coal or gas sources. The proposal from the Spanish Minister for the Ecological Transition is major investment in renewable energy, but this is a long-term objective. The electricity supply companies are making large profits when the pool price goes up. Pedro Sánchez complains that this is totally unacceptable and they have to pay most of this profit back. IVA (VAT) on electricity bills has already been reduced from 21% down to 10%, with no date when this will end, but there are calls for it to be reduced to 4%. This means that the revenue from the tax

There are other taxes that can be played with, and electricity companies have to pay the taxman a 7% “generation tax” on their profit. A consumer does not pay this 7%, but some of it is reflected in our bills. Until at least the end of the year this tax has been scrapped, and the supply companies are supposed to pass on a reduction in cost. Looking at our electricity bills, the top amount is the cost for the amount of power “potencia”, coming into our house or business. This is added to the cost of the electricity “energía consumida” we have used, and we pay a 5.11% straight tax on this total, except that this is then subject to IVA. This tax is the same as the ones we pay on fuel, tobacco or alcohol. On September 14th the 5.11% was reduced down to 0.5%, the lowest rate that is allowed in the EU, and this will have a direct effect in slightly reducing our bills. Most of this 5% tax is distributed between the autonomous communities, in our case Andalucía, so the government is proposing to refund the communities this amount of money so that their income does not suffer. Tinkering with the taxes we pay for electricity and gas will have an effect on our bills, but considerable changes will have to be made for a substantial reduction.

I was the oldest female competitor (Karen) and was paid a big compliment by one of the younger female competitors who rode alongside and said ‘You are my hero. I want to be like you in the future’!

Medals Galore at the Gran Premio La Amatista Cycle Race On Sunday, 19th September, six El Bandido/MCH riders ventured to Carboneras for the Gran Premio La Amatista race, an 87k circuit with over 1,000m of climbing. There were two races within the race, the first along the Fernán Pérez road and the second up an average 10% climb to Rodalquilar and the steep climb from Las Negras. The ‘peleton’ rode behind the lead car before and regrouped after, each of the race zones, with two feed stops along the way, with drinks, bananas and cakes available to fuel the next stage. An unusual format, for those of us used to sportive events in the UK, but one that allowed for a rolling road closure and ensured no-one got completely left behind. The last 20k, including the climb out of Agua Amarga, was behind the lead car, so everyone finished back in Carboneras at the same time! There were trophies for each of the race sections, overall trophies and age group medals, as well as a race number raffle.

What a waste of time, training and money. After seven years of medical training and hard work, my very good friend has been struck off after one minor indiscretion, and I think it's absolutely outrageous! He had sex with one of his patients and can no longer work in the profession that he loves. A genuinely nice guy and a brilliant vet.

A whole bus load of really ugly people had a head on collision with a large lorry, and the bus then fell down a steep slope. Unfortunately, all the ugly people were killed. When they got to heaven, St. Peter told them that as they had died so tragically, they could all have one wish. A woman said to him, “I just want to be gorgeous for once.” St. Peter snapped his fingers and she turned into a stunning blonde. The next person in the queue who was a man, told St. Peter, “It would be wonderful if I could be handsome, I would have had a much better time on earth.” St. Peter snapped his fingers, and he turned into an extremely attractive man, with a shock of dark hair and strikingly beautiful grey eyes. All the other ugly people from the bus asked for the same thing, to be gorgeous if they were a woman, or handsome if they were a man. St. Peter noticed that the man right at the back of the queue kept crying, and when it was his turn, he was sobbing with tears running down his face. St. Peter asked him what was the matter, and what he wanted to wish, and the man replied, “I don’t want to be the only one in heaven who is ugly, so please make them all ugly again!” St. Peter snapped his fingers.

Not So Daft Little Johnny is always being teased by the other neighborhood boys for being stupid. Their favorite joke is to offer Johnny his choice between a nickel and a dime and Little Johnny always takes the nickel. One day, after Johnny takes the nickel, a neighbour takes him aside and says, "Johnny, those boys are making fun of you. The Prostate Examination My doctor sent me to the hospital to have a prostate examination that I didn’t fancy at all. I put it off for a couple of days, but then decided I had to go. When I got called into a room, I put up with the examination very bravely, but I hated such a personal intrusion. Just after I had pulled my trousers back up the man in the white coat went out, and a nurse came in. When she asked me a question it sent shivers all down my spine. She asked me, “Who the heck was that man? The specialist can see you now.”

The Swim A priest and a Rabbi are very good friends, so they decide to go to a remote lake for a swim. Of course, they're swimming naked, as you do. All of a sudden, two buses pull up. Out of one pours the rabbi’s congregation and out of the other pours the priest’s congregation. Their clothes are a long way down the beach so they make a run for it. The priest, running with his hands covering his genitals looks over at the rabbi and sees him running with his hands over his face. He yells, "Rabbi! What are you doing!" The rabbi says, "In my synagogue they recognise me by my face."

Getting a Tan There was a man who took very good care of his body. Every day he lifted weights and jogged six miles. One day, he looked in the mirror and noticed that he was tanned all over, apart from his ‘thing’. So, he decided to do something about it. He went to the beach, took off all his clothes and buried himself in the sand, except for his ‘thing’ which he left sticking out with an erection. Two old ladies were strolling along the beach, one using a cane. Upon seeing the ‘thing’ sticking up out of the sand, she began to poke at it with her cane, remarking to the other lady, “There’s no justice in the world!” The other old lady asked what she meant. She replied, “Well, when I was 20, I was curious about it. When I was 30, I enjoyed it. When I was 40, I asked for it. When I was 50, I paid for it. When I was 60, I prayed for it. When I was 70, I forgot about it. Now I’m 80, the damn things are growing wild on the beach and I’m too old to squat down!”
