verybody agreed we needed some rain, but the deluge during the night and day of September 26-27th came as a big surprise. In actual fact, it was exactly a year since the last one that swept the road away in 'Cueva Negra' in Mojácar. This year retaining walls collapsed in the same area. Cabo de Gata village was severely under water and major flash floods resulted in roads being blocked between Garrucha and Villaricos and severe flooding at the Hotel Mexico. On these same dates in 2007, a film crew had to be rescued from 'Fort Bravo' by a fleet of 4 x 4 police vehicles when they became marooned. So perhaps we should put a ring round the dates of September 26th-27th for next year!

October 12th (a Monday in 2009) is aProcession serious An Easter National Fiesta, so banks, town halls and official offices will not be open. This day used to be known as Christopher Columbus Day (Cristóbal Colón in Spanish), but was later changed to Hispanic Day (Día de la Hispanidad) when it was decided that Christopher Columbus may well have been Italian! It is also the Saint’s Day of "Nuestra Señora del Pilar" (Mary Virgin of the Pillar). Her national shrine is in Zaragoza cathedral. The "Guardia Civil" have her as their patron saint, so this day is also known as "Guardia Civil Day", with parades in big cities. October 9th, the Friday before, is "Valencia Day" a big fiesta in Valencia. Traditionally the residents of Valencia head to the coast for a last "weekend" before winter. This gives them a long weekend of 4 days, unless they pinch another day off as well! From October 1st, major Spanish banks open again on Saturdays, but 'Banco Santander' has decided not to do this from 2009. Instead their weekday hours will be slightly increased. Other banks are expected to follow this initiative. Huércal-Overa has their fiesta events during October 15th-19th.

Cities, towns and villages have now published their autumn event details and there is something for everyone. Concerts range from big names in Rock and Classical music to Ballet from the Russian Ballet Company who come to Roquetas on October 24th to perform the "Nutcracker Suite". The David Bisbal concert in Roquetas, the start of his next world tour was sold out within 3 hours of tickets going on sale. The publicity material being released with his 4th album "Don't look back" contains photos mostly shot in Almería province. Theatre groups, including children's theatre, tour the area, October 31st, a Saturday this year, is celebrated and the amateur dramatic groups and choirs start by UK residents and of course Americans as being their Autumn and Winter programmes. "Hallowe'en Night". The Spanish population find this quite interesting, and often join in! They understand about "Ghosts and Ghoulies", as November 1st is 'All Saints Day'. This day is when anyone who has deceased relatives or friends at the cemetery, Spanish or otherwise, go along to clean up the plaques and decorate the cemetery with hundreds of flowers and candles. At dusk it is a magical and impressive scene. Monday, November 2nd is 'All Souls Day' when prayers are said for all the dead, not just particular family and friends. The Monday will be a full national fiesta day, Entrance to Vera Bullring instead of Sunday, so remember this!

Focus on Local News AVE Work An agreement has been reached with representatives of the Almería Association of Marble Companies, so that heavy plant and equipment from Los Filabres and the surrounding area will be used for the construction of the AVE (High Speed Train line) between Sorbas and Gafarillos. 'Sando', the consortium awarded the AVE contract, have agreed to extend their consortium to allow the spare heavy plant, lorries and dumpers, along with drivers, to take over the excavation and transport of materials. The agreement has been hammered out over several months and is seen as a solution for the marble industry that at present has heavy machinery and manpower surplus to their current requirements. The equipment and labour force could also be used on other projects. The mayors of Macael, Olula del Río, Purchena, Laroya and Cantoria have welcomed this initiative. The specialised and modern heavy equipment owned by the marble companies is considered ideal for a project of this nature, with a time period of 48 months.

Lorry Licences From September 11th, new regulations have come into force for professional lorry drivers who work for a transport company. The new "C" licence is only available to people over the age of 21 and needs a theory course of 130 hours together with 10 hours of practical lessons. The cost of this will be at least 1,400 euros. The passing of these courses results in a "Professional Certificate of Aptitude". The new licence is for drivers who earn their living as lorry drivers and does not apply to companies such as agricultural companies who have a lorry available for irregular use.

The iShares Cup

The Junta de Andalucía has given a grant of 600,000 euros to stage the event, and additional flights to Almería will take place. Concerts and other activities will take place from October 5th. The actual races will take place from 3pm-6.30pm on each day.

Davis Cup Final in Almería? Almería City was invited to make a bid for the tennis final of the 'Davis' cup from December 4th-6th. The final is between Spain and the Czech Republic. The Spanish Tennis Federation is also looking at rival requests from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Málaga, who hosted the quarter-finals in July. Hotel occupancy was 95% for this event and the total income was 10 million euros. Almería city had earmarked the Mediterranean stadium for the event with a likely crowd of 12,000 people. The city would have to pay 1 million euros but in return get rights to merchandising, sponsors and 50% of the ticket money. The chosen venue has to have the right stadium, parking for 350 vehicles belonging to teams and administrators, good communication facilities for TV coverage and press and covered practice facilities that can be on another site. The Andalucían Tennis Federation supported the bid from Almería city, but after a long meeting of all interested parties it did not go forward. Competition from other cities was one of the factors, together with the 1 million euros "fee" to host it.

Almería port is hosting the world final of the "iShares Cup" racing yacht event from October 10th - 12th. This event attracts the cream of racing yachts and crew. The organizers, 'OC Events', anticipate that up to 100,000 spectators will view the event with TV coverage going to 120 countries and a viewing total of 220 million people. Almería port will host one of the several trials leading to the final for at least 3 years, with an extension to 5 years if everything goes well. Almería port area is considered an ideal sailing Port Work area as well as a first class spectator area. Focus on Local News continued Carboneras and Villaricos totalling 12 million euros. 8.8 million is destined for Adra where the plan is to provide 600 metres of floating moorings together with services. This will increase the moorings to 531. Roquetas de Mar marina is to have 11 commercial units built at a cost of 1.3 million. Carboneras will have improved facilities and Villaricos port will benefit from public toilets.

Free Light Bulbs

and as a result they lose channels. Authorities claim that 85% of the population of the 42 municipalities at present have good coverage, which will improve before October 31st. The Junta de Andalucía web page www.tdtandalucia.es contains surveys that show the situation is far from good. There are a potential of 23 channels that can be viewed, along with local television stations. Many areas only have partial coverage of a handful of national channels at present. It is anticipated that satellite transmissions could be used to fill in "holes" in coverage. When the switchover takes place it will affect (amongst others) Albanchez, Albox, Antas, Arboleas, Bédar, Cuevas, Chirivel, Los Gallardos, Huércal-Overa, Lúcar, Macael, Mojácar, Oria, Partaloa, Purchena, Taberno, Turre, Vélez Blanco & Rubio, Vera and Zurgena. Suflí is almost unique in that coverage from the 23 channels is given as total. The rest of Almería province will go through the same exercise before April 3rd, 2010.

Recent electricity bills come with a flyer with a picture of a low energy bulb. This is not a campaign to try to get us to buy such bulbs, it is a voucher. The Spanish word for a voucher is "vale" and this is a "Vale por un bombilla de bajo consume" (A voucher for a low energy light bulb). To get your free bulb you take the voucher to your nearest post office and in exchange you get your free bulb, which should be offered with a choice of wattage. There will be another voucher issued in 2010. This is a government campaign to reduce energy Arboleas Sports Pavilion consumption. The Arboleas council have approved the building of a sports pavilion alongside the college at a cost of 950,000 euros. 50% of the cost will come from regional government funds. The Mayor of Arboleas, Ángel García, states that Arboleas needs a sports facility and by placing it next to the college it can be used by both pupils and general population.

Fishing Figures

Digital Television

Figures for 2008 reveal that the 5 ports in Almería province landed less than 10 million kilos of fish that was sold for 28 million euros. This price was 15% worse than in 2007 and the continuing fall in prices over the last few years continues. The price achieved for sales of red prawns fell from 7 million euros in 2007 to 4 million in 2008. Sales of red prawns caught by Garrucha fishermen were 60% of their total catch. The price obtained for shellfish in general fell from 32 euros a kilo to 24. Fishermen who decide to take early retirement, together with their boats, are entitled to negotiate a compensation amount from the Junta de Andalucía (governing body). 20 boats have been scrapped under this scheme in the last 2 years.

42 municipalities in Almería province are scheduled to have their Spanish analogue TV signals switched off on October 31st. To receive the Spanish digital television (TDT) channels instead, homes need a TDT box, or a television with inbuilt TDT decoder, and possibly an improved aerial. The date of October 31st is the new date, after the switchover could not be completed on June 30th. The switchover is not supposed to take English Weddings place if a significant number of people cannot receive The Roman Catholic Parish Priest, Antonio Martín the TDT transmissions because they have no coverage, Acuyo, from Cuevas, Herrerías and Villaricos has been

Focus on Local News continued conducting weddings in English for over 4 years. These weddings typically take place before or after the summer tourist season. Various companies will arrange these weddings, from simple ceremonies with just a few guests, to weddings where large numbers of family and friends come over. The typical age of couples choosing this type of ceremony is between 20 and 40 years. Father Antonio already has 3 such weddings booked for 2010.

Garrucha Town Hall

have been seen in more than 75 cities and 5 continents. The shows draw large audiences and the Mediterranean Games Stadium in Almería city is still planned to be the venue. So far over 9 million people have seen the "Saltimbanco" show, but not in Almería, yet!

Fake Lawyer? A Spanish woman, age 36, has been arrested in Vera after complaints from clients who had paid her money to "speed up legal processes", believing she was a lawyer. The sum of money known at the time of her arrest is alleged to have been over 1,600 euros. The police state that she was not in fact a lawyer, did not belong to the recognized association and did not have the required qualifications. It is anticipated that further clients may well come forward, including non-Spanish people.

Juan Francisco Fernández, mayor of Garrucha, has announced that the modernization work on the town hall will start in October. The town hall offices and staff will move to the 'Casa del Mar' on the promenade for at least 12 months. The work carried out will involve modernization, improvements in technology, access and services for the public. The cost of the work is budgeted as 525,000 euros with the Junta de Andalucía Student Accommodation (governing body) paying 72% of the cost. The new University year always sees large numbers of students looking for rooms or apartments in Almería city. Landlords welcome these renters as they often stay for more than just one year. This year there is fierce competition with rents being reduced across the board. Students are able to bargain with landlords to reduce the rent they paid last year, with many landlords having to agree. Almería University does not have halls of residence where the students can stay on campus.

Sports Tourists

Circus Postponed Almería City Culture department announced several months ago that the famous French-Canadian 'Cirque du Soleil' was coming to Almería city this month, to perform one of their spectacular shows "Saltimbanco". This event has never appeared on the circus website and the culture department have now announced that the event will come to Almería during the Spring of 2010 instead. This postponement is stated to be because the show is at present touring Nordic countries, not Europe. The show is also billed to be starting in Barcelona on December 30th until Jan 10th. The circus company have various shows on tour that

Almería city and the Junta de Andalucía are opening a "Sports Office" in Almería to encourage International and National sport events to come to Almería province. The climate in winter and the availability of numerous hotels with spas and meeting rooms is seen as a major lure to sporting meetings. Any sport event of significance leads to team support members, families and fans seeking accommodation along with TV coverage.

Problems in Albanchez Major damage was caused to properties in Albanchez following a landslide on August 5th, and emergency work to shore up 2 properties is underway. The fear was that any further movement would result in a "domino" effect where further properties could be

Focus on Local News continued damaged. The severe rain during Sunday, September 27th caused more damage to 2 further properties, one belonging to a British owner. Technical studies have resulted in demolition being recommended for part of both these properties. The owners of both properties, not resident at the time have been informed.

Internet Fraud Police have been receiving many complaints regarding a Spanish company selling electronic goods via their website www.mavex.es. The complaints all centre round the non-delivery of goods. In reality the company was registered as supplying goods for the catering industry. A man from the Canary Islands has been arrested although his partner is believed to have fled to Italy. Complainants from many provinces including Almería are being invited to co-ordinate their complaints into a general "denuncia".

Flash Floods The severe rain during the weekend of September 26th-27th resulted in several flash floods and damage. Cabo de Gata village was badly affected with fire crews spending 10 hours reducing the level of water. The village has for a long time had problems with rainwater as the central area is below sea level. 3 pumps are in place permanently to pump out excess water and further pumps may be installed. Water flooded the Hotel Mexico at Vera Playa severely with the underground car park being almost completely under water along with the kitchen area and restaurant. Fire services were still working during the following Monday to pump out the water. Hotel owner, Arturo Parra, estimated that the flood damage cost was in the region of 2 million euros, including damage to 11 cars. Roundabouts on the Garrucha-Villaricos road became impassable except to 4-wheel drive vehicles. A 'Ryanair' plane was hit by lightning at Almería airport whilst on the ground. The return flight to Manchester was delayed whilst technicians inspected the aircraft and confirmed that it was safe to take off.

Train Passengers Airlines are suffering from falling numbers of passengers but the trains are not. Passengers using the "Talgo" trains from Almería to Madrid went up 11% on 2008 figures, to the middle of September. 140,000 people travelled either one way, or on return tickets. The cost of a ticket in tourist class is 42,40 euros with reductions if you purchase in advance or via the RENFE (Train operator) website.

Gas Bottle Cost From October 1st the cost of a bottle of gas has gone up slightly from 10,48 euros to 10,69 euros. The cost is calculated according to gas production costs, David & Elena exchange rates and world demand. The Spanish David Bisbal, the world famous singer from Almería, government dictate these price increases or decreases has announced that he and his partner, Elena Tablada, for the consumers. are expecting their first child. His many friends and fans in Almería province greeted the news with fervour. ’Flu News David Bisbal regularly performs in Almería or Roquetas, Last month we said that the "normal" ’flu vaccines sometimes opening world tours in the province. Focus on Local News continued numbers of the public such as health workers. If you are normally healthy you may be given the vaccine without the need to have an appointment with your doctor. If you are likely to be included in the new H1N1A vaccine programme this will be discussed on your visit. The approved vaccines for this "new" flu' are called "Focetria" from Novartis and "Pandemrix" from GlaxoSmithKline. Spain is buying both types. Laboratory studies have shown that one dose is sufficient for healthy adults and children but the European Health Agency that advise EU members are suggesting that 2 doses are better.

Albox Nursery A modern and well equipped nursery is now open in Albox. The large building has 8 classrooms and can take 115 children up to the age of 3. It also has large outside patio, a kitchen, multiple-use area, teachers’ room, offices and toilet facilities. The building takes up 768 m2 of the 1,700 m2 plot.

El Corte Inglés The 'El Corte Inglés' (The English cut) store group have been in negotiation with Almería city authorities for many years regarding a large store in Almería city. The group have now announced that their plan until 2013 does not allow for such a project. This is partly because by spring in 2010 their 36,000 m2 store, along with one of their 'Hipercor' supermarkets will be open in El Ejido. The Almería store was planned to be on the site of the 'La Salle' college. Now the city council are talking about a new potential site on land released when the railway goes underground. 'El Corte Inglés' have been established in Spain for many years, but the economic crisis has meant that for the first time ever they have had to reduce profit margins to stay competitive. Financial analysts have pointed out that the Spanish company does all their business in Spain, and are therefore particularly affected by the current situation.

2010 Tax & Benefit Changes

Fish Industry Aid Parador Various schemes have been suggestedMojácar to increase the profitability of the fishing industry. A further step forward was taken at the end of September when the provincial delegate for agriculture and fisheries, Juan Deus, met with representatives of Garrucha, Carboneras, Roquetas and Adra fish industries. An EU grant of 5.2 million euros has been promised with a total budget of 16 million euros. Plans include the preparation of fish locally for direct sales or freezing, more restaurants at the actual ports to sell the local fish and grants for freezing facilities on some fishing boats. Brand names may also be introduced so that "Prawns from Garrucha" or "Prawns from Almería" would be specifically labelled. There are about 300

The Spanish Government have been debating tax and benefit changes for 2010 with various options floated. IVA (Value added tax) bands will be increased from 16% to 18%, from 7% to 8%, but with no change on the 4% level. The 16-18% level applies to purchases such as clothes and electrical items, electricity and telephone charges, petrol and diesel fuel and car sales. The 7%-8% level applies to hotel, restaurant and bar bills, most foods, transport and new properties. The 4% band is on bread, milk, medicines and books. These increases are scheduled to take effect from July 2010. It now appears that no changes will be made regarding the "Renta" (income tax) for workers and small companies. The 400 euros relief (part of the last election campaign) will be scrapped. It was intended to help with high mortgage payments and inflation. This is no longer considered appropriate and will save 6,000 million euros. Pensions will go up by an amount not yet specified. The 420 euros per month of special benefit for the unemployed who have run out of benefit, will be extended in the next few weeks to people who ran out of benefit after January 1st 2009, instead of August 1st as was announced.

Focus on Local News continued Los Gallardos Subsidised Housing 45 townhouses are to be built on part of 6,500 sq metres of land in Huerta Nueva. Los Gallardos. The town hall has given the land for the project, designed to provide low cost housing. Once the first 45 properties have been built a further phase will be put in motion, depending on the demand. Applicants can register with Los Gallardos town hall for consideration as tenants/purchasers of the proper ties.

Robot Welcomed A specialist police unit including a robot were officially incorporated into the National Police recently in Almería city. The robot and team are trained to deal with explosives, hazardous materials including radioactive substances. The new unit known as TEDAX-NRBQ has been in Almería since the Spring. Their presence is seen as essential in an area that includes tourism, along with port and airport facilities.

The project has an anticipated cost of 171,000 euros and the company who undertake it will have to start within 2 months of the contract being signed, and finish the facility within 15 months. The tantatorio will be built on a 1,300 sq metre plot near the sports pavilion at Las Marinicas. Residents of Carboneras have been campaigning for a long time for such a chapel.

Court Action In September 2007 a severe fire completely destroyed the perfume factory in Almería owned by the French company 'Briseis'. 2 women were severely burnt and subsequently died, whilst 10 other workers were injured. The fire was caused after damage to a pipe carrying alcohol. The alcohol spilled onto the floor and a spark ignited the spillage. 3 senior members of 'Briseis' and the Director of 'Auxiple', a subcontractor, are now to appear in court. They will be charged with breaches of Health and Safety, inadequate fire equipment and lack of an emergency plan.

Vera Red 060 Office Vera has opened an office, as part of the "Red de Oficinas Integrados de Atención al Cuidadano-Oficinas 060" scheme. These offices provide a mid point between town halls and the Junta de Andalucía where citizens can get rapid access to documentation and facilities available from the Junta. Part of the new system will allow people to use an "electronic signature" to ask for information and petitions on-line.

Carboneras Chapel of Rest Carboneras Town Hall has now agreed proposals for the construction of a "tanatorio" (chapel of rest) and associated rooms. Instead of town hall funds being

A new initiative for subsidised housing projects has been launched with applicants being invited to specify their choice of accommodation. The Junta de Andalucía (governing body) calculate that there is a shortage of 25,000 subsidised dwellings in Almería province. These properties are called in Spanish "Viviendas de Protección Oficial" or " VPO" for short. Town halls are being sent new computer programmes to help them compile a register of applicants. Such applicants have to provide details of income, family circumstances and indicate whether they want to rent or buy. The registers should be completed by all town halls before 2010. The " novelty" is that if 25 people register as wanting a 2bedroom apartment, the corresponding project would take this into account. The same thing will be done if there are applications from large families or people with physical impairment that need special accommodation. At present there are approved plans for 1,300 dwellings, land set aside for 7,000 more and 700 properties from developers "in stock" that will be re-classified. Applicants at present, who usually outnumber the available dwellings, often take part in a "lottery" type draw.

So Now You Know... Writing on a Blackboard Nowadays "blackboards" have gone through being green or white to the modern electronic version. When people wrote on blackboards they always used sticks of "chalk". Chalk is made of calcium carbonate, along with coral, marble, skeletons of fish and humans and limescale in kettles or water pipes. School chalk is actually made of Gypsum, that is, calcium sulphate. Gypsum is mostly mined for building use such as plasterboard, tiles, and to make cement. Plaster of Paris is gypsum as well and was given this name because of the large amounts of gypsum near Paris. The word "gypsum" comes from the Greek 'gypos', meaning "chalk"! "Hello" Edison decided that shouting "Hello" was the best way to start a telephone conversation, claiming, "It can be heard ten to twenty feet away". Alexander Graham Bell had been shouting "Ahoy, Ahoy!" when he was testing his model. Edison's habit of shouting "hello" was taken up by his coworkers, and then by telephone operators. Before they used "hello" operators used to say "Are you there?" or "Are you ready to talk?" Telephone operators became known as "Hello girls". Before Edison popularized "Hello", people used "Hullo", which expressed surprise, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Halloâ&#x20AC;?or "Halloo" that was a hunting call for hounds. It was also the word used to call ferrymen. Largest Man Made Structure 'Fresh Kills' is a rubbish dump on Staten Island, New York. It was opened in 1948 on a site of nearly 5 sq. miles, and was soon receiving twenty barges a day with 650 tons of rubbish on each barge. At one stage the mound of rubbish was 80 feet higher than the Statue of Liberty, and was to continue in use. By 2001 however, environmental pressure resulted in it being closed. It was opened again after 9/11 because of the enormous amount of debris that had to have a place to go. It is now shut permanently and landscaping and flattening is under way. It is intended that it will become a park area and wildlife project.

Planet Mars Mars has always been called the "red" planet. This is because when we look at it from the earth we see dust in the planet's atmosphere. In 1976, the Viking rovers took pictures, and we were all shown a desolate red landscape. In fact, the Viking rovers only took pictures in black and white or "greyscale", and these pictures then had to be put through colour filters. The 'New York Times' published these "colour" pictures, but in 2004 admitted that they had increased the "pinkness". The true colour of Mars is now accepted to be a khaki or butterscotch shade of brown, with some patches of salmon-coloured sand. Igloos The word "igloo" means a house in 'Inuit', and everybody thinks they were made of snow or ice. In fact, only Canadian Eskimos regularly built igloos of snow. Most other igloos were made of stone and animal hides. Eskimos in Alaska rarely used snow or ice for igloos and in 1920 a survey of 14,000 Eskimos found only 300 who knew about snow igloos. In 1920 as well, an American newspaper erected a snow igloo in Denver, Colorado near a zoo where there were reindeer. They hired an Alaskan Eskimo to explain to people how they lived their lives in an igloo. He had only ever seen one before, in a film! Camel Humps Camels' humps are used for storing fat, not water. They can retain water, but they store the water throughout their bodies, and particularly in their bloodstreams. The fat in the humps gives them the ability to lose up to 40% of their body-weight without being seriously affected, and they can manage without drinking for about 7 days. When they do drink they will take in about 220 litres. The line from the bible about a camel going through the eye of a needle is believed to be a wrong translation. The Aramaic word for "sturdy rope" is 'gamta', the word for a "camel" is 'gamla'. The line probably said "It is easier for a sturdy rope to go through the eye of a needleâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;Ś."

Spain and Supermarket Bags

ast month we wrote about plastics recycling. Bags, including those we use to bring home our groceries, have now become hot news. This is because the EU want member states to improve recycling and in 2008 the Spanish Government unveiled a "National Waste Plan" that "suggested" that the use of "once only" supermarket type plastic bags should be reduced by 50% during 2009, and cease to exist during 2010. The "official" figure is that in Spain we pick up 10,500 million free bags each year. Other figures suggest this is probably 15,000 million! The problem with these bags from an ecological point of view, is that they are not biodegradable, so if put in the ground they don't rot. The usually quoted period for decay of a plastic bag is given as 400 years! Apart from this, when not in the ground, plastic bags and other plastic rubbish are a huge hazard for wildlife which can easily get caught in them and die. If you take the lower figure of 10,500 million plastic bags collected by customers each year, this works out at 283 per person. If they actually decayed in 200 years instead of 400 years, this is still a very long time. So supermarket chains are deciding what to do, and some have come up with proposals.

'Carrefour' (French owned) has already started eliminating the normal supermarket bag and this will take place in the Almería stores on November 15th. Instead, you can buy their version of biodegradable bags for 5 cents or a larger reusable cotton bag for 1 euro 60 cents. They are encouraging clients to help save the planet, with slogans such as "Écharle una mano al medio ambiente" (Give a hand to the environment). 'Eroski' have come up with a different plan. They have modified their check out readers so your purchases can be allocated the number of plastic bags you need. If you don't take them, 'Eroski' will knock 1 cent off your bill for every bag saved. Or, you can take the normal bags. The 'Día' chain (owned by 'Carrefour') has always charged for plastic bags and now you can buy reusable ones. 'Mercadona' and 'El Corte Inglés' have not yet revealed what their policy is. 'Alcampo' have started giving biodegradable bags to customers who spend over 100 euros. The manufacturing cost of a normal supermarket bag is about 1 cent. Cynics say that the supermarkets are just increasing profit margins and don't really care about the environment. Spanish manufacturers who belong to the plastics association ANAIP say that the 'Carrefour' "biodegradable" bags come from China, don't fully degrade, and

don't have Spanish approval from AENOR, the Spanish body that certifies products! Ecoembes' who administrate the recycling of plastics in Spain say that only 10% of supermarket bags are put in the "yellow" rubbish containers. They do accept that another 65% are used for household waste, put into the "green" organic bins, and then often dumped in landfills. So surely fully biodegradable bags are the answer? Techniques exist to produce them, with a life expectancy of about 6 months, and then they rot in soil. Consumer groups such as 'Facua' say that saving the planet is good but ask if supermarkets are going about this the right way? The next few months will be very interesting. Spain is not as bad as some countries - the USA get through 60,000 bags every 5 seconds! Bird trapped in a plastic bag

â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Caseraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; - a Spanish success

a Casera', the popular Spanish version of what we would probably call lemonade is now 60 years old. The word 'Casera' is used by members of the public and bar and shop staff as a recognized name for this type of refreshment, even though we may be served a "substitute" brand not made by the 'La Casera' company at all. Originally it was produced by the 'Duffo' family in Catalonia, whose origins were French merchants. The first bottles had a porcelain stopper with a rubber seal, together with a flip-top mechanism. This allowed the bottle to be re-sealed or re-used. The small traders who sold the product, often door to door, were encouraged to re-fill the bottles with other liquids. Not seen as a marketing ploy at the time it nevertheless increased the public awareness of 'Casera' and boosted sales. Examples of the original bottles are now collectorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; pieces!

USA. Profit margins suffered from transport costs and in 1996 the Columbian company 'Santo Domingo' along with German and US interests made a takeover. Sales had been as high as 40 million litres.

Production continued, but with less exports, until 2001 when 'Cadbury Schweppes' decided that the brand was too good to let be a competitor and made a b i d . E ve n t u a l ly th i s wa s successful, helped by an offer price of 117 million euros. Cadbury Schweppes embarked on a renewed marketing campaign and aggressive pricing and 'Casera' improved their sales. Other competitors came and went including 'Leche Pascual' the Spanish milk producer. During 2008, a total of 186 million litres of 'Casera' products were sold and their brand remains amongst the top 10 list of light drinks sold in Spain, as well as Portugal. Even 'Coca-Cola' decided that 'Casera' was a brand to take notice of, and introduced their own version.

Other companies tried to copy this success and by the 1950s there were hundreds of other types available. 'Casera' increased their sales and saw most of the others off. They switched from just the standard product into "orange", "lemon" and "cola" flavour, even though 'Coca-Cola' was by now international. By 1990, the Spanish company employed 6,000 workers and started exporting to Italy, Germany, Portugal and even the Now, the Japanese multinational

company 'Suntary Holdings' have made a bid for the Schweppes division of Cadbury Schweppes that includes 'La Casera'. Cadbury Schweppes have come out fighting, saying that their own division has an excellent sales record, future expansion plans and a solid financial base. They have told 'Suntary Holdings' that this division is not for sale! 'Suntary Holdings' have not been put off however and it remains to be seen whether eventually their "hostile" bid is successful. 'Casera' has come along way since the original merchants from France came to Catalonia and started selling the fizzy drink in the special bottles. During the 1980s they had a slogan with their advertising campaign, "Si no hay Casera, nos vamos", that translates as "If there isn't any Casera we're off". The Japanese are not saying that they want to take over the drinks division of 'Cadbury Schweppes' just for 'La Casera' label; there is much more at stake than that. If they are successful, yet another multinational company will own Spanish 'Casera'. Japanese 'Casera'? It just doesn't sound right!

Real Bad Days! And you thought you were having a bad day...! A fierce gust of wind blew 45year-old Vittorio Luise's car into a river near Naples, Italy in 1983. He managed to break out a window, climb out, and swim to shore -- where a tree blew over and killed him. Mike Stewart, 31, of Dallas was filming a public service movie in 1983 on The Dangers of LowLevel Bridges when the truck he was standing on passed under a low-level bridge -- killing him. Walter Hallas, a 26-year-old store clerk in Leeds, England was so afraid of dentists that in 1979 he asked a fellow worker to try to cure his toothache by punching him in the jaw. The punch caused Hallas to fall down, hitting his head, and he died of a fractured skull.

A man hit by a car in New York City in 1977 got up uninjured, but laid back down in front of the car when a bystander told him to pretend he was hurt so he could collect insurance money. The car then rolled forward and crushed him to death. George Schwartz, owner of a factory in Providence, Rhode Island, narrowly escaped death when a 1983 blast flattened his factory except for one wall. After treatment for minor injuries, he returned to the scene to search for his files. The remaining wall then collapsed on him, killing him instantly. Surprised while burgling a house in Antwerp, Belgium, a thief fled out the back door, clambered over a nine-foot wall, dropped down, and found himself in the city prison.

Two German motorists had an all-too-literal head-on collision in heavy fog near the small town of Guetersloh. Each was guiding his car at a snail's pace from opposite directions but both near the middle of the road. At the moment of impact, their heads were both out of the widows where they smacked together. Both men were hospitalized with severe head injuries. Their cars weren't scratched.

Hitting on the novel idea that he could end his wife's incessant nagging by giving her a good scare, Hungarian Jake Fen built an elaborate harness to make it look as if he had hanged himself. When his wife came home and saw him, she fainted. Hearing a disturbance, a neighbour came over and, finding what she thought were two corpses, seized the opportunity to loot the place. As she was leaving the room, her arms laden, the outraged and suspended Mr. Fen kicked her stoutly in the backside. This so surprised the lady that she dropped dead of a heart attack. Happily, Mr. Fen was acquitted of manslaughter, and he and his wife were reconciled. Depressed since he couldn't find a job, 42-year-old Romolo Ribolla sat in his kitchen near Pisa, Italy with a gun in his hand, threatening to kill himself in 1981. His wife pleaded for him not to do it, and after about an hour, he burst into tears and threw the gun to the floor. It went off and killed his wife. In 1983, a Mrs. Carson of Lake Kushaqua, N.Y. was laid out in her coffin, presumed dead of heart disease. As mourners watched, she suddenly sat up. Her daughter dropped dead of fright.

Operation Summer

peración Verano de Tráfico (Summer Traffic Operation) is the annual campaign during July & August to publicize safety, and to police the traffic during these two peak months. The campaign includes publicity, with full pages in major Spanish newspapers and TV spots, the cancelling of all traffic police leave during key weekends and road campaigns aimed at safety issues.

There were also only 104 accidents notified to the traffic police, 14 less than 2008 and 40% less than in 2000.

In Almería province there were 10 fatalities in this period, 7 of them in July. During March and June there were no deaths. The July and August deaths were the lowest for 10 years in Almería province.

Recently in Aguadulce a mother and baby, and then a child age 8, were hit on zebra crossings on the same day. Aguadulce is part of Roquetas de Mar and is an area famous for having large numbers of roundabouts, no traffic lights and stretches of dual carriageway. The accident to the mother and baby happened just outside the Guardia Civil Police station and was caught on their security cameras. Speed was said to be a cause, along with dense shrubbery on the "refuge" between the 2 carriageways. The child was released from hospital fairly quickly but the mother and baby spent time in intensive care.

The EU has put as a "target" a reduction of 50% in deaths between 2001 and 2010. Spain has achieved this between 2003 and 2009 so far, so unless there is carnage on the roads in 2010 the 50% figure will be achieved. While it contains little of the artistry and none of the nuance of Quentin Tarantino's DEATH PROOF, HELL RIDE is a similarly fun retro romp through the seedier corners of American B-movie history. Written and directed by Larry Bishop (son of Rat Packer Joey Bishop), who also stars, HELL RIDE is a tribute to the biker flicks of the late 1960s and early â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;70s. The movie follows Pistolero (Bishop) and his two captains, the Gent (Michael Madsen) and Comanche (Eric Balfour), as they booze and brawl their way across the Arizona desert, with the ultimate goal of exacting revenge on a rival gang that murdered one of their members. A healthy mix of throat slitting, coke-sniffing, and naked female oil wrestling makes HELL RIDE one of the more gratuitously sensational films of recent memory; yet if one is able to get past the almost laughably blatant tastelessness on which the movie is built, there is a fairly good time to be had. As the dapper Gent, Madsen proves once again that he could read from the phonebook and still sound like one bad dude, and tip-of-the-cap cameos from Dennis Hopper and David Carradine solidify the film's enjoyably retro/po-mo vibe. Every aspect of HELL RIDE, from the washed-out cinematography to the Link Wray-style spaghetti western surf soundtrack to the pulped-up dialogue, is hyperstylized and blatantly self-conscious, and that is ultimately what saves the film. If there was even a trace of seriousness here the movie would be unwatchable--luckily, there isn't. Yes, it's completely offensive, and no it isn't going to win over any fans at N.O.W., but for every BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, you have to have a HELL RIDE or the whole lousy business will just crumble.

The Almería singer Encarna Navarro performs on October 31st. The Russian Ballet perform the 'Nutcracker Suite' on October 24th. Joaguín Sabina from Úbeda presents his new album on December 8th & 9th. Mozart's Requiem Mass is performed on December 12th and a concert by the Bucharest Symphony Orchestra takes place on December 19th. Exhibitions The 2009 'Itinerarte' travelling exhibitions of Photography, Sculpture, Painting and Recycled Art visit Arboleas, Fiñana, Huércal Overa, Santa Fe de Mondújar and Turre. The Photography tour is at Santa Fe until Oct 25th. Sculpture at Huércal Overa until the 25th, Paintings at Fiñana until the 25th and Recycled art at Arboleas until the 25th. In November Photography goes to Fiñana from Nov 4th, Sculpture is at Santa Fe from Nov 11th, Paintings go to Turre from Nov 12th and Recycled art goes to Huércal-Overa from Nov 5th. The tours are sponsored by the Junta de Andalucía and rotate until January 2010. Each exhibition is for 1 month. 'Wildlife: Photographs of the Year' Exhibition. Huércal-Overa, November 5th –26th Municipal Theatre. Filming of 'Lawrence of Arabia' Exhibition. 51 photographs taken when the film was made in 1962, Centro Abierto, Carboneras until October 20th. "75 Years, 75 Front Pages" is an exhibition of newspaper front pages recording events from 1936-2006, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the Almería Press association. The exhibition is at Carboneras (Centro Abierto) from October 7th-17th, Ohanes October 19th-25th, Gádor November 9th-13th and Cantoria November 16th-22nd. Concerts Peter Goodman has been invited by Vera Town Hall to hold his 88th Birthday Concert on Saturday, October 31st at 8.30pm at the Victoria Convent. The Tomas Luis de Victoria Choir from Cuevas and Pianist Pedro Valero will share the event. Admission is free. The 'Cajamar Foundation' 2009 Classical Concerts start on October 23rd, at 9pm with a performance by "The 18th Century Orchestra" at the Maestro Padilla Auditorium in Almería. October 18th, the 'Medina Azahara' group from Córdoba perform. October 19th is the final concert featuring the Spanish singer Joana Jiménez from Seville. Entrance to all the performances is free, and take place in the Municipal Festival site. 25th Albox Rock Festival. This annual event takes place on November 1st. Various bands perform from 7pm. From 10pm performances take place from Vómito, Txarrena, Gastillazo and The Cynics. This event normally draws a crowd of 3,000 people. Paul Stocker and the Dubi Dubi Band bring their show 'Marula' to Carboneras on the evening of October 31st.

'Mamma Mia!' The stage show comes to Roquetas Auditorium, from Nov 12th-15th, as part of the Spanish Tour. It has run in Madrid for 30 months and been seen by more then 1 million fans. The Almería Chef Tour 2009, entitled "Cocina Divertida" starts again now that summer is over. The event will be at the Hotel School at Almeraya on October 14th-15th and 'Las Eras' Restaurant in Tabernas on October 24th-25th. The final event in November will coincide with the Culinary Fair in Aguadulce. The aim of the event is to demonstrate traditional dishes, with modern interpretation, from both renown local chefs and trainee chefs.

The 8th annual "Short Films and Video" competition ('Almería en Corto') will take place in Almería City December 4th-12th. The total prize money amounts to 65,200 euros with 17,000 going to the outright winner. Films and videos are judged by a panel of experts, and the results will be announced on December 12th. Labour Pains A married couple went to the hospital to have their baby delivered. Upon their arrival, the doctor said he had invented a new machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labour pain to the father. He asked if they were willing to try it out. They were both very much in favour of it. The doctor set the pain transfer dial to 10% for starters, explaining that even 10% was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before. But as the labour progressed, the husband felt fine and asked the doctor to go ahead and bump it up a notch. The doctor then adjusted the machine to 20% pain transfer. The husband was still feeling fine. The doctor checked the husband's blood pressure and was amazed at how well he was doing. At this point they decided to try for 50%. The husband continued to feel quite well. Since it was obviously helping out his wife considerably, the husband encouraged the doctor to transfer ALL the pain to him.
