The Focus is free every month and distributed from Mojácar to San Juan de los Terreros on the coast and inland as far as Albox and Huércal-Overa.
The copy deadline for the December issue is November 18th.

October 29th is the anniversary of the terrible ‘Dana’ flooding in Valencia last year and an inquiry headed by a judge is still underway. This October, the storm ‘Alice’ has caused major flooding and damage from Murcia all the way up the coast and one part of Murcia was without water for over a week. Major flooding and damage occurred in Ibiza and the other islands.
Here, we have been very fortunate and with high temperatures the ‘Infoca’ fire prevention and firefighting period that normally finishes on October 15th was extended until early November. In our ‘In the News’ section we comment on the two worst fires that they have had to deal with. Temperatures in our province went up by 1.8ºC in 2024 and this was the highest increase in all of Spain. We comment on this in our ‘In the News’ section with the problems higher temperatures bring, and how they can be mitigated. Mojácar town hall has been given grants to deal with climate change and the regeneration of beach areas, and we have their press release in our ‘Community News’ section.
In an article we explain the reasons that led to the complete electrical blackout last April 28th in Spain and Portugal. Urgent action has to be taken as the existing capacity in many parts of Spain and our province does not allow for any expansion. In our ‘In the News’ we explain measures that are being described as being urgent and will be carried out as soon as possible. The ‘AVE’ (High Speed train) project needs a considerable amount of electricity but the official date when the line will be operational between Murcia and Almería city is now “during 2028”!
The anti-flu vaccinations are now under way, and some people will be given the anti-Covid one as well. We list the relevant dates for different sectors in our ‘In the News’ section and from October 27th, people aged 60 or over and essential professionals such as security forces, firefighters, civil protection and prison staff could have the vaccinations.
The lack of electric cars and charging points in Spain
has been highlighted in a report and Andalucía is the worst of all the autonomous communities. Sales of electric vehicles are very sluggish although the ‘Moves III’ grants have been extended. The EU target of zero CO2 emissions in 2035 is a long way off but may be impossible. We comment on this in our ‘In the News’ section.

Dates for concerts and cultural activities are now available for November, with some during early December. We list the ones that may be of interest in our ‘What’s On’ section.
There are discussions in the EU that this year should be the last one when the clocks go forward or back. Many countries including Spain, consider that there are now no longer any benefits so they should be scrapped. This has been suggested before without any general agreement, but it seems to be that this time it may be approved.
Apart from the national fiesta on November 1st there are no other ones during the rest of this month. Saturday, December 6th is a major national fiesta, ‘Día de la Constitución’, as it was this date in 1978 when 92% of the population of Spain voted in favour of a written constitution in a referendum. Monday, December 8th is a national fiesta for religious reasons, ‘Día de la Inmaculada Concepción’. In 1854 there was a “Papal Edict” that stated that the Virgin Mary had an ‘Immaculate Conception’ and was born free of original sin.

There have been successive dates given when the ‘AVE’ (High Speed Train) from Murcia will arrive in Almería city and passengers can use it. The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has now confirmed that this will be “during 2028” after all the testing and certification has been done. The major problem is building the underground station in Lorca that has a suggested completion date of late 2027, and after Lorca the only other station is at Vera. There will be a major workshop in Almería city “from 2028” and this has a budget cost of 40 million euros.
Figures for this year give the average life expectancy in Spain as being 84. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), Almeria has experienced a historic leap in longevity. In 2005 some 2,082 people aged 90 or over lived in our province but now there are 5,877, that is 182% more. In 2005, only 51 people had reached the age of 100 but today there are 118, with 78 women and 40 men. Domingo Vizcaíno González, the oldest resident in Canjáyar was born in 1925 and will turn 101 on January 5th. He is still active, in good health, and has eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
There is a major concern regarding the temperature rise in our province, which went up by 1.8ºC in 2024, and this is the highest increase in all of Spain. In 1910 the average was 18.06ºC, the average in the last decade was 19.06ºC, and in the last three years 19.50ºC. Last year there were 10 days with over 40ºC in Arboleas, Cantoria, Partaloa, Purchena and Fines. The western Mediterranean, where the province of Almeria is situated, has warmed at a rate two to three times higher than the global average since the 1980s. This thermal acceleration has direct and immediate consequences, causing increasingly intense heat waves, episodes of prolonged drought and, paradoxically, extreme rainfall events such as the ‘Danas’ when the sea temperature goes up. The arid and semi-arid climate, low atmospheric humidity, and low vegetation cover are factors
that contribute to dry soils retaining more heat. In addition, the extensive rainfed areas, the large area of greenhouses and a coastline that is highly exposed to the Mediterranean Sea increase the solar radiation absorbed by the land. Experts state that the constant increase in temperature needs a comprehensive review of current territorial and agricultural planning. The reforestation of areas that have been degraded, the introduction of crops that are resistant to drought, and the urgent improvement of water infrastructures are priority measures to try to mitigate the already visible effects of warming. A 2050 prediction in the provinces of Granada, Seville, Málaga and Almeria is that there will be temperatures of over 35ºC for three months of the year, but this is based on current temperatures rises.
Normally, the ‘INFOCA’ fire-fighting and prohibited events liable to cause fires, ends on October 15th. This year, it has been extended until an unspecified date in early November because of abnormal high temperatures. So far this year there have been about 70 fires in our province where Infoca have been needed to extinguish them, but small fires that cover a maximum of 1 hectare are dealt with by normal fire fighters. The most serious fire, with the largest numbers of hectares burnt, has been the one last May in Huércal de Almería caused by lightning that affected 1,300 hectares (5 sq. miles). The fire in Lubrín in September covered more than 1,000 hectares and took four days to control. This one was caused by power lines that became detached from the pylons in high winds. The Infoca budget went up from 243 million euros in 2024 to 257 million this year. 111 million (43.2%) are allocated to extinguishing fires and 146 (56.8%) for prevention work that starts in the spring, with nearly 500 operatives in the summer and autumn peak months.
If your partner dies and he or she has paid into the Spanish Social Security System, you may be entitled to the Spanish widow’s pension (Pensión de Viudedad), which is a contributory benefit that

widowed partners can receive. There are certain conditions that the deceased person must have met for the partner to access the benefit. The most important one, but there are several, is that there are payments made into the Social Security System by the deceased for at least 500 days in the last five years before their death, or between the two of them they have jointly paid in for a period of 15 years. In Andalucía the amount of the pension varies per province and there is a big difference. In Cádiz it is 939 euros in 14 payments per year but in our province, it is only 758 euros and only widows in Granada receive less money. The other entitlement is when he or she dies in an official ‘pareja de hecho’ legal partnership and it has been registered for at least two years before the death. The couple have to have lived together in a stable relationship for five years prior to death and during this period they had not separated from each other. Most town halls will process the application for a couple to become a ‘pareja de hecho’ or it can be done in Almería city. A new proposal is that a couple that have not been married, nor registered as a pareja de hecho couple, will be able to claim a widow’s pension providing they have been together for a minimum of two years prior to the death (shown to be true from the ‘padrón’, the official list of residents in a municipality) and they are the parents of a child or children. There have been many court cases where women have applied for a widow’s pension but have no legal standing and the Social Security Department has denied it. In one case, a woman took her refusal to the European Court of Justice who told Spain that in her circumstances she should be entitlement to one. This new proposal will have to be passed in parliament of course. Another major benefit of a ‘pareja de hecho’ partnership is that property or money left in a Spanish will is treated the same as for a married couple with no tax payable (in Andalucía on a total value below 1 million euros). In situations that are complicated, advice from a professional as to the rights and the procedure necessary is highly advisable.
Almeria province has the highest demographic profile in all of Andalucía as 42% of births in 2024
were to either two non-Spanish parents, or one of them. The percentage of births to foreign mothers went up to 36.7%, the highest in the entire historical records from the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalucía. It is well ahead of the second highest province that is Malaga with 23.9%. The substantial difference demonstrates the strong imprint of the immigrant population. In 1996, the percentage of foreign mothers was 2.34% that went up sharply during the economic boom. In 2008 it was 32% but it has grown considerably in the last decade. The trend in the birth rate is replicated in marriages with a foreign spouse and in Andalucía as a whole, it was 19.8% of the total in the first quarter of this year. Among the nationalities that grew the most is the Ukrainian population, which experienced an increase of 64.3%. In 2022, Almeria had 1,585 residents of Ukraine which in 2023 reached 2,604. This growth is related to the crisis in Ukraine of course, and Almeria has become a destination for stability and opportunities for these families. Another relevant increase is that of Colombians, who have gone up by 30.2%, from 5,757 in 2022.
One of the cornerstones of the European Union’s objectives is reducing greenhouse gases by at least 55% by 2030. Translated into figures for the whole of Spain, in five years the numbers should reach 5.5 million electric cars and 340,000 publicly accessible charging points. Andalucía is the worst autonomous community for electric vehicles and charging points with only 6,670 public charging points, but almost 30% are stated to be out of service at any one time and only 26% are fast chargers. Sales of electric vehicles are almost static and only just exceed 49,000. The global electromobility indicator for the Automobile Manufacturers’ Association for Andalucía has only reached 16 points out of 100, whilst the national average is 21.2. Madrid has reached 31 points, Navarre 27.5 and Catalonia 24.2. In the case of the electrified vehicle penetration indicator, Andalucía has 22.6 points out of 100, among the last three in Spain and far from the average of 29.3. The top positions are once again led by Madrid with 49.1, Navarre with 36.6 and

Catalonia 31.1. As regards charging points, the Junta de Andalucía give a 70% incentive to individuals, the self-employed and public entities, and up to 80% if they are located in municipalities with less than 5,000 inhabitants. The MOVES III grants for electric vehicles have been extended with more funds that give a maximum grant of 7,000 euros with conditions.
The College of Notaries in Andalucía have published information that relates to house purchases in the first half of this year by non-Spanish nationalities who are not legal residents in Spain. Purchases went up 2% compared to in 2024 and Brits bought 15.5% of them. Dutch people bought 11.8% followed by Germans and Belgians. As regards legal residents in Spain, purchases were 19.9% from Moroccans, 5.3% Italians and 12% Brits. Pedro Sánchez, the Spanish Prime Minister has not mentioned recently his proposal a few months ago to put a 100% tax on the sale of second-hand properties for non-EU buyers or non-residents.
In an article we explain what happened on April 28th when all power in Spain and Portugal collapsed and this caused a prolonged blackout. Major proposals and action in our province have been announced, and the centrepiece of the solution is a new 400 kV Substation at Antas, an infrastructure whose development was already contemplated in the 2021-2026 planning proposals. This will now be constructed as a matter of urgency and it will make the Levante area of our province a key node of the national grid, acting as the “gateway” for new power. Completed early next year, it will serve as a fundamental support for the electrification of the ‘Mediterranean Corridor’ high-speed ‘AVE’ train line, ensuring that these have a stable and robust source of electricity. Additionally, the Berja 220 kV substation will be improved to increase the reliability of the supply for the entire Alpujarra and Poniente regions. Altogether, the capacity will be increased by more than 60% over its current one, with 60kms of new power lines. For some time, the present capacity in our province has been
100% taken up which has meant that new projects cannot go ahead because there is no spare power. The improved supply will overcome this problem, meet demands from industry, allow many more electric car public charging points, and the large amount of electricity needed by new data centres. The same situation applies to many parts of Andalucía and there will be similar major increases in the supply elsewhere including the provinces of Málaga and Jaén. Granada, along with Córdoba, are the only provinces that have a surplus and can allow for the demands of new companies. The CEO of Endesa, José Bogas, says that the overload of the electricity system “puts the brakes on strategic projects that could place Spain at the forefront of the European energy sector”.
2,100 people in Andalucía have acquired their first home with the Andalucía Housing Guarantee program, a mortgage guarantee scheme launched to facilitate access to housing. In our province this applies to 270 people under the age of 40. Successful applicants receive a grant of 20% of the purchase price and the other 80% is a guaranteed loan through a bank mortgage. Applicants must be registered in a municipality (so on the ‘padrón’ the official list of residents) be up to 40 years of age and use the home as their habitual residence for at least two years following the date of acquisition. They are only provided for first-time home purchasers of new or second-hand properties. The mortgage guarantee from the Junta applies to homes with a maximum price of 295,000 euros, although the limit will be increased by 20% for homes with an A or B energy rating. It is an essential requirement that an applicant is up to date with their tax and Social Security obligations. The Junta has agreements with Caixabank, Cajamar, Cajasur, Caja Rural de Granada, Caja Rural del Sur, Ibercaja, Santander and Unicaja where an applicant can apply. Once they have the pre-approved loan, the Junta de Andalucía approves it and subsequently, the loan is granted. The financial entities cannot dictate that additional services have to be taken out such as credit cards or their own insurance policies. As collaborating entities, banks certify

that applicants meet all the requirements and will be able to pay the mortgage that for people under 40 can be for 25 years. The mortgage guarantee with 20 million euros allocated initially has another 25 million euros for this year. The grant has been changed from 15% to 20% and the age limit has gone up from 35 to 40. We detail some facts about mortgages in general in an article.
Uzma Usmani is a UK born 57-year-old woman who is a mother and grandmother and has lived in Mojácar for 7 years. She asked her friend Nikki Robinson who lives in Vera to take her to Almería airport and changed in Madrid to go to Sicily. Once there, she joined the flotilla that was going to Gaza to take humanitarian aid. She told the local newspaper ‘La Voz de Almería’ that she had always been an activist and was going to Gaza to demonstrate against the oppression and call for the people of Gaza to have justice, liberation and peace and take them food and medicines. She has friends in Gaza and has sent then donations, but she wanted to go there in person. With 100 people on board, the boat ‘Leïla Khaled’ took ten days to get there. Contacting her was difficult, but she told the newspaper when they were able to speak to her that it was frightening when drones flew over the boat and one dropped some unidentified liquid into the sea near them. Along with all the people on the other boats it was intercepted by the Israeli navy, although they were in internation waters at the time and all the people on board were arrested. Altogether, there were 4,000 people in the “Global march” to Gaza from 80 different countries, made up predominantly of medical staff and journalists. Deported from Israel and now back in Mojácar, Uzma has become a source of pride for her family, friends and the whole population, who see her as an example of commitment, courage and solidarity in the face of adversity.
Every year, by June 30th, an income tax declaration has to be made for the previous calendar year known as “La Renta”. The Spanish Institute of Statistics analyse these and publish their findings
and the latest one deals with the average income of the inhabitants of 40 municipalities in our province. Once again, Almería city has the highest average annual income from 203,740 persons who submitted tax returns of 28,175 euros on average, followed by Mojácar with 7,455 people and an average of 26,487 euros. Carboneras with 8,456 tax returns had an average income of 26,102 euros followed by Huércal de Almería with 18,700 returns and an average income of 25,732 euros. 5,480 people in Macael earned 25,131 euros on average followed by 108,000 people in Roquetas de Mar with 24,592 euros. These incomes are obviously affected by the number of qualified people working for better-paid companies and the amount of professional people. Pulpí experienced a drop of 17%, although it remains in 19th position out of 40, but it was much higher up last year. The conclusion is that whilst there were 12,100 tax returns with an average income of 21,300 euros, some people are working in the black economy, particularly in agriculture, who do not submit tax returns. Antas follows on and then Cantoria and Cuevas del Almanzora whilst in Los Gallardos with 3,000 returns the average income was 20,600 euros. In places where there is a large number of retired people who have a much smaller income with only 2,900 returns, such as in Zurgena, the average income was 19,200 euros, followed by Arboleas. Turre was in 39th position out of the total of the 40 municipalities in the list with 4,200 returns and an average of 18,800 euros. This is almost 10,000 euros less than the average income in Almería city, so this is a big difference!
Salt has been produced in the Las Salinas area of our province for over 100 years. The extraction is currently managed by Unión Salinera de España, which belongs to the French Salins Group. It is one of the largest companies in terms of salt flats in the world, with other ones in Spain at Torrevieja, Cádiz and Santa Pola. The brand name is ‘Sal Costa’ and the Cabo de Gata salt flats produce 30,000 tonnes of salt mainly for de-icing of roads. It is collected between the months of September and October, when work in the salt flats is in full swing. The salt

is washed and crushed and piled up to dry, before being taken to the industrial area from where it goes on ships, mainly to Norway and England. The extraction process begins when seawater enters the artificial lagoon through the La Fabriquilla channel and travels a distance of approximately 7 kilometres underground until it reaches the salt flats, where the sun and wind play a fundamental role in increasing the salinity of the water through evaporation. Julián Márquez, head of the Cabo de Gata extraction plant states that “Each salt flat is different and ours are very important for nature, attracting migratory birds and are a refuge for many protected species. 99% of the birds in the Cabo de Gata natural park are concentrated here because it is full of brine shrimp, which is the main food of the flamingo.” Apart from this there is a gourmet product that is collected by hand in a completely artisan way. The ‘Fleur de Sal’ is pure and organic with only 15 tons collected annually. “It is the best in the world, there is no other one like it because it has all the marine components, is very rich in magnesium and has many properties needed by the human body. Cabo de Gata Fleur de Sal is a very exclusive product that is produced mainly in Almeria and in only a few other places in Spain. The thin layer on top of the salt flats is harvested by hand in the months of April to August and does not undergo any transformation process. It is marketed as it is harvested because it does not have any type of impurity.” Since last April, the salt flats have been open to the public through guided tours that allow a person to learn about the work of salt extraction first-hand, as well as everything that the operation of this plant entails to conserve the environment.
Last month we explained that a new anti-tobacco law is being debated in the Spanish Parliament. Some health professionals and oncologists are complaining that alternatives to traditional tobacco are useful tools in tobacco harm reduction programs. The text of the new law specifically defines and regulates products such as electronic cigarettes (with or without nicotine), oral nicotine sachets, herbal smoking products or heated tobacco devices, equating them to conventional
tobacco. “A proposed law on smoking such as the one approved by the Council of Ministers ignores science and does not provide realistic solutions to smokers, so it is a law doomed to failure”, denounced Fernando Fernández Bueno, an oncological surgeon at the Madrid Gómez Ulla Hospital and spokesman for the Platform for the Reduction of Harm from Smoking. Experts recall that since the anti-smoking law of 2005 and its update in 2011, Spain has made progress in the fight against smoking, but they warn that the new text “repeats recipes from two decades ago” and ignores scientific advances. “Today we know that what kills is combustion, not nicotine. Equating smokeless products such as electronic cigarettes with traditional tobacco is a public health mistake,” says Fernández Bueno. “While countries such as the United Kingdom, Sweden and Japan have achieved historic reductions in the prevalence of smokers, thanks to the incorporation of less harmful alternatives in their policies, Spain is moving in the opposite direction. The United Kingdom today registers 12% of smokers (half that of Spain) and Sweden barely 4.6%, which has allowed it to become the first smoke-free country in the world. At the other extreme, countries such as India, Uruguay and Vietnam have banned these alternative products which is a mistake.” The health experts also regretted that the draft anti-smoking law has left out effective measures such as plain packaging, still to be resolved, or increases in taxes on traditional tobacco products.
The 2025 / 2026 campaign against the flu started at the end of September for children from 6-59 months, pregnant women and teachers of classes of children up to the age of 5. Indicators of respiratory diseases were showing a clear upward trend according to official data by the Junta de Andalucía. The rate of influenza syndrome had increased significantly, standing at 1.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants compared to only one case in the previous week. For its part, the Covid-19 syndrome has experienced an increase to 3.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, exceeding the previous 2.6 cases. More worrying is the increase in bronchitis and bronchiolitis in children under 5 years of age,

with 66.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, more than double the 25.4 cases recorded during the previous week. Rocío Hernández, Minister of Health and Consumer Affairs, has declared that the objective of the Andalucía Administration is “to achieve an average coverage rate of around 60%”. The Minister of Health stressed that “the flu can also kill”, especially in the elderly, so the campaign seeks to protect the most vulnerable groups and reduce hospital admissions associated with these respiratory infections. The flu vaccination plan continued in stages over following weeks and from October 14th for people over 80, and the house-bound to be immunised in their homes. From October 20th it was extended to people age 70 or older, five-year-olds and older children who were chronically ill. Finally, on October 27th, people aged 60 or over and essential professionals such as security forces, firefighters, civil protection and prison staff were included. People whose jobs included meeting large numbers of people will also be able to be immunised on request. For the fourth consecutive year, the campaign includes children under 5 years of age, considered to have been proved to be very effective by reducing hospital admissions for severe flu in this group by 70%. Also, the intranasal vaccine will be administered in educational centres to children age 3-4. As regards a vaccination against Covid-19, the national strategy has raised the recommended age to 70, as most hospital admissions are concentrated in this group. However, people with risk pathologies under the age of 70 can also access this immunisation. At the same time, the third campaign to prevent bronchiolitis caused by the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in children under 6 months has begun. The SAS is contacting parents of babies born from April 1, 2025, to the present day to arrange immunisation. All infants born from September 22nd, 2025 ,to March 31st, 2026, will be vaccinated directly in the delivery room or on the maternity ward before discharge. The Andalucía health authorities strongly recommended that all parents with children under 6 months should arrange for immunisation against RSV. This respiratory condition, that is particularly prevalent during the autumn and winter months, can be serious in
the youngest children. As in other years, it may well be that the periods for vaccination in various age groups are not available on the official dates, particularly in smaller medical centres. Anyone who has missed their official slot will be vaccinated on request.
When the PP political party came into power in Andalucía, they stated that there were many grants available that the outgoing PSOE partly had not investigated nor obtained. Juanma Moreno, the Andalucía Prime Minister, appointed a delegate to liaise with all the provinces and explain what could be obtained. At the start of October, it was announced that work costing 87.3 million euros for regional development projects had been approved in Almería province and the EU will provide 74.2 million of the money, which is 85%. The funds are part of the ‘FEDER’ initiative from the 2021-2027 budget, but approved projects can be started by 2029, and there are 8 large projects that have been given the green light spread between 32 of the 103 municipalities. In our Levante area there is funding for the Vera boulevard, improvements to the coastal areas, beaches and their infrastructure in Mojácar to attract more tourists, and the construction of a multifunctional building in Huércal-Overa for the Association of Municipalities. In the Almanzora area there will be an exhibition and congress centre with capacity for one thousand people in Albox, and various cycle ways linking the ‘Cosentino’ factory in Cantoria to promote bicycle and e-scooter transport.
Amazon has invested 1.2 billion euros in Andalucía with 1,600 permanent jobs at their major logistics centre in Dos Hermanos in Seville with more than 2,000 jobs throughout the community. More than 2,500 companies sell their products through Amazon with an impact of about 900 million euros towards the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and 600 are based in Seville. 75% sell their products in at least one foreign country with total sales of 135 million euros. To coincide with “Prime Day” on October 7th Juanma Moreno, the Prime Minister of Andalucía

and other dignitaries visited the Dos Hermanos centre and the company announced that it was the 5th anniversary of this centre, known as SVQ1, being open. This is Amazon’s only robotic logistics centre with four other logistics centres in Granada, Malaga, Cádiz and Seville. There is also an Amazon Fresh centre at Dos Hermanos. They announced that there were more than 2,000 indirect jobs and 600 in sectors such as construction, logistics and professional services last year. Companies are allowed to set on employees with temporary contracts when there is a surge in business and they will employ another 400 people temporarily, partly to deal with the large increase in orders as they approach the Christmas season. The Dos Hermanas robotic centre has 15 kilometres of conveyor belts to move products and packages from one area to another, and the largest onsite solar roof in Europe. 13,000 solar panels produce electricity that is equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 1,500 homes. In Seville, the minimum entry salary for operational positions exceeds 1,500 euros per month, without the need for previous experience (The initial salary is very similar to those at Mercadona who also pay well over the minimum wage). There is a benefits package from day one valued at more than 3,500 euros per year, including a pension plan, training, health insurance, discounts on purchases and extended and paid parental leave. Their “Hub Delivery” arm of the company has more than 500 local businesses throughout Andalucía who deliver orders to customers. Ruth Díaz, general manager of Amazon in Spain, told the guests that “When we inaugurated this centre, five years ago, we set ourselves the goal of creating 1,000 permanent jobs but the current total is 1,600 people and this will continue to rise.”
In an article we explain why the national power cut happened on April 28th which was a combination of some problems with renewable energy compounded by the wrong attempts at REE, the Spanish National Grid organisation, to correct it. With renewable energy it is more difficult to “synchronise” the 50 cycles of the voltage that can
only vary by a very small margin. Since then, REE is taking more electricity from nuclear or combinedcycle gas power stations that can be synchronised to a higher margin, but our electricity bills have gone up as a result, as renewable energy is the cheapest. In Spain last year, wind, solar photovoltaic and solar thermoelectric plants (a less common way of producing electricity) grew by 12.2% in 2024 compared to the previous year, to exceed 66,756 megawatts (MW). One megawatt is the power needed for an appliance of 1,000 watts, such as a water heater, switched on for 1 hour. According to the latest study, the present capacity has gone up by 80% in the last five years. Photovoltaic solar energy had another year of strong momentum with a 22.8% increase in 2024 reaching 32,350 MW and become the main source of renewable energy in the country, exceeding the installed capacity of wind power for the first time. Wind energy growth in 2024 is limited to 4.1%, exceeding 32,100 MW, in the order of 1,275 MW more than was recorded the previous year, while solar thermal capacity remained stable at just over 2,300 MW. In Andalucía in 2024, renewable energy totalled 12,500 MW, only exceed by Castilla-La Mancha with 12,600 MW, an increase of 10.5%. They have 12,100 installations compared to the 8,200 in the Andalucía region, but these produce more power. In the article we explain how batteries at wind and solar farms not only allow greater synchronisation but also allow the stored electricity to be sold on cloudy days or at night.
To give a big boost in defence spending requested by NATO, the Spanish government are making available 7.3 billion euros at 0% interest to major companies that provide items to the three branches of the military. The loans descried as “pre financing” ones are to give the companies government money, instead of them having to fund manufacture with loans from third parties and in some cases, the loans don’t expire until 2032. The development of the new PAZ II earth observation satellite to be carried out by the Spanish Hisdesat company has already been loaned 1.1 billion euros. Another 1 billion euros is

for the NH-90 Standard 3 helicopters, the most modern version manufactured by the NHIndustries consortium that includes Airbus. The government has ordered 32 helicopters that will be made in Albacete. The ship builder Navantia is being loaned 2.2 billion euros until 2031 and 1.2 billion is for the modernization of the Álvaro de Bazán F-100 frigates. The work is to extend the use of all F-100s until 2045 as they have currently exceeded more than half of their present useful life.
Coinciding with the celebration of the patron saint of the National Police at the Maestro Padilla Municipal Auditorium in Almería city, Martín Fernández, the Government sub-delegate, held a press conference. He announced that in Almería, according to the latest official data, there are an average of 44 crimes per 1,000 inhabitants. This is 5% less than the national average and 3% less compared to all of Andalucía. There are now 800 National Police officers spread
between Almería city and El Ejido which has gone up by 100 since the present government led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez came into power. He admitted that a high percentage of the population arriving in the capital and the large municipalities come from other countries but linking immigration or the population of foreign origin with criminality, that the Vox political party claim, is not true at all and is manifestly xenophobia and racism. He stated that, “The National Police in Almería is, above all, a human face from the agents who patrol our streets daily, those who investigate crimes rigorously so that justice is complied with, those who watch over our port and airport and borders, those who protect the most vulnerable victims and those who work tirelessly so that our daily lives go on normally. We must value the results obtained in this last year, with decreases in certain crime indicators, successful operations against drug and human trafficking and the good management of mass events such as the ‘Dreambeach’ festival.”

A German scientist discovered that brewer’s yeast could be eaten in a concentrated form in the late 19th Century. The ‘Marmite Food Extract Company’ came into being in 1902 in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, in a custom-built factory using yeast from the Bass Brewery. The name “marmite” came from the French name for a large covered earthenware or metal cooking pot. The labels on marmite jars still carry the image of a pot. By 1907, it had become so popular that a second factory was opened at Camberwell Green in London. During WWI, because of the high salt content, British troops were given marmite with their rations.
Yogurt started as a simple fermented dairy product but was then refined into many variations. It can be made from cow milk, goat milk, sheep milk, nut milk, soy milk, rice milk and other creamy substances. It is thought that the earliest yoghurt was made accidentally in Mesopotamia around 5,000 BC when milk-producing animals were first domesticated. The milk was stored in bags made from their stomachs and the digestive juices and bacteria made the milk coagulate and become acidic. This was a very new and interesting type of food and the acidity helped to keep it edible far longer than if it had been put in normal pots.
The Statue of Liberty, officially named “Liberty Enlightening the World”, is a colossal neoclassical sculpture that is 305 ft /90m high, including the base, in the Upper New York Bay on Liberty Island. The manufacture was begun in France in 1857 out of shaped copper plates fixed to four enormous steel beams. Erected in Paris in 1884, it was donated to America for friendship and accepted by the American Ambassador to France, Levi Morton. In 1885 it was dismantled and taken to New York. It was intended to represent the symbols of freedom, justice and democracy and a welcoming sight for immigrants arriving in the US.

Polar bears are the largest species of bear but they are marine mammals because they spend most of their time on the sea ice of the Artic Ocean and can be found in Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Russia and Norway. Adult males weigh between 350600 kgs, are about 2.5m in length whilst females weigh between 150-290 kgs. They are excellent swimmers and can travel very large distances. Their main food is seals, and they pounce on them at blow holes. They have a black skin beneath two layers of fur and this helps them to absorb heat from the sun. There are many conservation programmes to increase their numbers.
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, humans can distinguish approximately 10 million colours. Cone cells in your retina, the back part of your eye, sense light and send signals to your brain and these alerts allow you to perceive different colours. A person’s eyes can also process about 36,000 bits of information every hour. There are six muscles in an eye that are controlled by three cranial nerves, and the muscles move faster than any other muscles. No two people have exactly the same eye colour, but 27% of the population of Europe and North America have different shades of pale to dark blue.
Mr David Strang, living in Ivercargill in New Zealand, patented his “instant” or “soluble” coffee in 1890 and it was sold under the brand name “Strang’s Coffee”. A Japanese scientist, Satori Kato, from Chicago modified the process and introduced his coffee into the US in 1901. The ‘Nescafé’ brand was launched in 1938 with another change in the manufacture. After WWII, vacuum freezedried coffee was developed as a direct result of research into an entirely different product. Apart from making “quick coffee”, instant coffee gives manufacturers a lower shipping weight because it is lighter than beans or ground coffee.
Andalucía, including Almería province, became an autonomous community in 1980 ruled by the PSOE party until 2019. In 2022 the PP and their President Juanma Moreno obtained a majority. He is hoping to attract voters with various tax incentives as 2026 is election year. The tax incentives are in force this year, so will be part of the 2025 ‘La Renta’ tax return completed by June 30th next year
The 2026 budget will include a grant of 200 euros per child that will apply to children born since January 1st this year and also for adopted children and foster children with no upper income limit which has been 30,000 euros.
There will be a 30% deduction on veterinary expenses, with a limit of 100 euros, during the first year for families who acquire a pet and the annual estimated cost is 12 million euros. In the event that the animal is adopted from a rescue centre or is in a foster home, the owner can have the deduction for three years. If they are assistance dogs, guide dogs for blind people, ones that detect low blood sugar or epileptic seizures, and even dogs that assist female victims of gender violence then this deduction will be applied throughout the life of the animal with immediate effect.
Juanma Moreno states that 182,000 residents of Andalucía will be able to benefit and he explained that “Andalucía wants to be a pioneer” and with this “important measure, which is novel and special, we are”. He considers that pets are another member of our families that “give us affection and not only need affection from us, but also treatment from vets. We have tried to be sensitive to that large part of the population that lives with animals and particularly to the many people who need them to be able to continue with their day-to-day life.”
There will be a new deduction in personal income tax of 100 euros for those taxpayers who suffer from celiac disease, whether it is the affected person, their partner or one of their descendants.
Juanma Moreno states that, “In Andalusia there are almost 40,000 people with celiac disease. For this reason, many families shop every day looking for the ‘gluten-free’ label on products but some of them cost four times more than normal ones. Celiac disease is a disease that has no medication, and the only remedy, at present, is to control the diet, and pay the increase in cost for many foods such as pasta or bread. We want to support all people and their families by taking this step, recognising the reality they live every day and alleviating part of the effort they make. Eating gluten-free should not be a luxury for anyone.” The forecast is that this will help more than 30,000 people and cost almost four million euros.

There is an extension of the existing deductions for renting a primary residence and the Junta will increase grants to 1,200 euros a year to young people under 35, people over 65, victims of gender violence and terrorism. People with disabilities can claim the maximum deduction of 1,500 euros.
Another new deduction relates to fees paid for sport at schools, gyms or federations. The deduction is 15% up to 100 euros and it will apply to both adults and minors who are registered in a club or take part in fee paying competitions and keep receipts. It is considered that this will benefit 70,000 people, encourage a heathy fitness regime and will cost 3 million euros.

An international team of experts from the Institute for Technological Research at the Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid, has published a preliminary report. This relates to their findings as to what caused the complete blackout of the ‘Iberian System’ in Spain and Portugal on April 28th with no electricity, in a matter of seconds.
During the week prior to the blackout, technicians had already detected voltage instability phenomena in the network, especially in Andalusia and Extremadura. Sudden ups and downs that were repeated like unstable heartbeats, should have activated a serious alert. On April 28th, these oscillations reached a major amplitude and what should have been a robust system didn’t work. Technicians at the Red Eléctrica de España (REE) centre (The Spanish National Grid) disconnected renewable energy sources without any viable alternative, and this caused an “overvoltage collapse”.
Nuclear and combined cycle power stations that burn gas can be regulated far better than solar and wind production, but in Andalucía there was only one gas plant left in operation and only one nuclear power plant in the centre of Spain. The 400 kV network, which should stabilise the grid was out of action by over one third for maintenance and was not able to make the necessary voltage control. This caused a “cascading blackout” and electricity going to France was shut down. This scenario was not even contemplated in the European Electrical Emergency Response Plan.
The report highlights the actions at REE, the system operator, owned by the private listed company Redeia, with 20% of its capital owned by the Spanish Government. Between 12 noon and 12.30am, REE technicians tried to remedy the situation by using existing conventional electricity to dampen the oscillations. The result was the exact opposite, the margin of safety was reduced even more, accelerating the collapse of the complete system. The surge that caused it is described as “an attempt to put out a fire with petrol.” The most disturbing thing in the report is not that it happened, but that it could happen again. They
state that “the weakness of the network, the low inertia of the system and the lack of effective coordination at REE are structural problems.”

The CEO of Endesa, José Bogas, states that in the southwest area at the time there were 16,000 MW of renewable energy, 13,000 MW from photovoltaic solar and 3,000 MW from wind farms, but only 800 MW of the far more stable synchronous generated electricity, and it needed to have been 4,000 MW. He considers that REE is facing something “very difficult” to do, with a control system that has not changed very much since 2001/2002, “but we now have a completely different electricity generating system.”
Solar and wind power depend on natural conditions that fluctuate. Solar generation stops at night and drops during cloudy conditions, whilst wind turbines are only effective when wind speeds are favourable. As a result, the power supply from these sources can be inconsistent. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) offers a practical solution by storing excess electricity generated during periods of high production and can release it when demand increases or supply drops. This ability to “time-shift” energy use makes renewable energy more reliable, grid-friendly and profitable. Over the last decade, the price of lithium-ion batteries has decreased by more than 85% and several projects around the world demonstrate how this approach is being implemented. In California, the Darden Clean Energy Project pairs a 1,150 MW solar facility with a 4,600 MW battery system and they are very common in Germany.

With the high cost of renting a property in most parts of Spain and the lack of availablity, many people are seeing if they can obtain a mortgage to buy a property instead. Interest rates in general are low as the major banks are awash with money.
In the first half of this year 243,257 loans, were signed to buy a house, 25% more than in the same period last year and the highest number since 2011. Figures for August, September and October have not been published, but in July they increased by 25.8% year-on-year, according to the College of Registrars. Obviously, they are not only main homes to live in, but also second homes bought as an investment or alternative accommodation for holidays.
Not all the people who consider the idea of taking out a mortgage will succeed. Banks have not lowered their criteria for granting mortgages and in the third quarter of this year there was a slight increase in the rejection of applications.
Whether an entity accepts or denies the loan depends on a multitude of factors. Some are well known; a lack of sufficient income, previous defaults, or excess existing debts such as a vehicle loan. Banco Santander state that it is essential that the monthly mortgage payment does not exceed 35% of net income and there is money for an emergency with unforeseen expenses.
Applicants are mostly unaware that banks have a “scoring” system that takes into account many factors and they never fully understand the reason for the denial. The bank’s response is limited to indicating that the interested party has not passed the tests. Agencia Negociadora, a real estate credit intermediary registered with the Bank of Spain, gives some of the factors that score down or make the operation unviable. “Reasons can be working in a sector considered risky with no stable employment, having changed address frequently, requesting the purchase of a property between relatives, or the simple location of an apartment can become real stumbling blocks.”
With a purchase sale between direct relatives there
may be internal agreements to disguise the value of the purchase. Banks want to be sure that the purchase price is not artificially low. Another reason that causes misgivings in the banking sector is advance payments. Some relatives, before having the mortgage approved, give their family members very large amounts in cash or unjustified transfers. For the banks, it is a warning sign that it may be an attempt to launder money or move undeclared funds.

Banks don’t like apartments located in conflict areas. Neighbourhoods with a high concentration of tourist apartments result in a deduction of points because they are considered unstable for coexistence with short term tourists. There are certain professions or sectors that cause rejection, even if the client has a permanent contract because they are considered risky, such as underground mining. Recent job changes in less than 6-12 months are examined, even if the new job is better.
The family situation is also a factor. With three or more children, even if the income is high, this might lead to a rejection. The bank calculates the debt-tonet income ratio that is not a personal issue, it is risk mathematics.
For those who manage to pass all the bank filters, they have to decide what type of mortgage they want, one of the most important questions for the duration of the loan. Fixed mortgages have consolidated their lead over the variable Euribor mortgages, as they give peace of mind that all payments are equal, every month.

It’s PAWS-PATAS “pup-date” time again. 6 dogs and 6 cats found their forever homes during September. A much quieter month than normal because so many people head to their “home” countries to escape the summer heat.
Our September bingo brunch raised 325 euros and our event at Vera Aqua Parque (in conjunction with ELEOS) brought in 110 euros for each charity from the raffle and 1286.47 euros from ticket sales. Thank you to Vera Aqua Parque.
Our September book sale raised 256.69 euros and our final 3 memberships of PAWS-SOME CLUB brought in 45 euros. Thanks also go to the yoga ladies who kindly donated 300 eurosas well as one of our regular supporters, Jan of Jan’s Jewels, who presented us with 170 euros.
Whether you have an hour a week or a day a week, whether you can help with driving and delivering furniture, assisting with events, socialising our furry friends or walking the dogs, we need you. And of course, the icing on the cake and our dream would be for more fosterers and adopters. Please get in touch – the more volunteers we have, the more attention our furries get “one to one”.
We had some great events during October, but we’ll have to tell you all about those next month.
Every week is “Funday Sunday” @ Zeppelin, Mojácar Playa from 9pm. Jukebox DJ - 1 euro a song & all proceeds to PAWS-PATAS
Nov 6th – Bingo Lunch Club @ The Snug, Mojácar Playa, 1.30pm. 2 full games of bingo and a choice of lunch for 10 euros.
Nov 11th – Book Sale @ Scotty’s, Mójacar Playa between 10.30am-1pm. And finally – thank you to every single one of you who supports us in some way, volunteering, donating furniture/clothes to our outlets or by attending an event. All donations are truly appreciated at any time and it’s true that we couldn’t do what we do without your kindness.

from townhall press release
During October, Francisco García, mayor of Mojácar, and other town hall representatives laid a foundation stone and signed documents for two projects included in the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan for climate change and regeneration of beach areas. An investment of 432,000 euros is for work in front of the Parador Hotel with the planting of trees, the installation of natural stone channels and drains to collect and redirect stormwater and increasing the number of green areas. Recycling initiatives will be promoted among residents and visitors.
The regeneration of coastal areas project, with an investment of 727,000 euros, is work to recover degraded coastal areas, adapting them for tourism and recreational use. Planned work includes the rehabilitation of a 7,000m2 to 8,000m2 esplanade between the Paseo del Mediterráneo road and the beach, create an environmental park with activities for all ages, the reorganisation of parking and vehicle traffic control, landscape integration with the new cycle route, and more green and shaded areas.
The Mayor announced that “Today, Mojácar takes a firm step towards a sustainable and responsible development model. With these works, we begin a new era that combines growth, tourism and respect for the natural environment. They are projects that not only embellish, but also protect and prepare our municipality for the challenges of climate change.” The work is co-financed by Central Government, the Junta de Andalucía and Mojácar town hall.

Travel may be confusing. Your determination and sheer desire to do your own thing will be successful. Take time to catch up on overdue correspondence. Rather than making a scene, communicate quietly about the way you feel. Your luckiest events this month will occur on a Thursday.
Romance will come through involvement with fundraising organizations. Travel will be on your mind, but you should be sure that you’ve got all your work up to date. Travel for business or pleasure. Don’t even bother trying to get their approval on the things you want to do. Your luckiest events this month will occur on a Sunday.
You can make financial deals, but it may be best if you’re not using your own cash. Avoid purchasing expensive items. Put your money into a safe place that will ensure a profit if you let it sit long enough. Problems with your boss could lead to unemployment. Your luckiest events this month will occur on a Saturday.
Upheavals may occupy your day. You must make sure that all your personal documents are in order. Colleagues may try to undermine you. You can offer your mate a commitment or promise that will help stabilize your personal life. Your luckiest events this month will occur on a Tuesday.
Family members may feel anxious if you make promises you don’t deliver. Family get-togethers will be interesting. You need an outlet. You can meet potential new mates, but make sure that they aren’t already committed to someone else. Your luckiest events this month will occur on a Thursday.
Check your project over carefully if you were not the only one contributing to the end result. You will be in the mood for competition, and your ability to lead a group will bring you popularity. Don’t let your mate bully you into thinking that you owe them your time and your life. Stick to your own projects and by the end of the day you’ll shine. Your luckiest events this month will occur on a Monday

Last year, I replaced all the windows in my house with those expensive, double pane, energy efficient kind. But this week, I got a call from the contractor complaining that his work had been completed a whole year and I had yet to pay for them. Boy, oh boy, did we go around! Just because I’m blonde doesn’t mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I proceeded to tell him just what his fast-talking sales guy had told me last year. He said that in one year, the windows would pay for themselves. There was silence on the other end of the line, so I just hung up, and he hasn’t called back.
A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen. ‘Careful,’ he said, ‘CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh my gosh! You’re cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my gosh! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They’re going to STICK! Careful. CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you’re cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don’t forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!’ The wife stared at him. ‘What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don’t know how to fry a couple of eggs?’ The husband calmly replied, ‘I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I’m driving.’
Two elderly women were eating breakfast in a restaurant one morning. Ethel noticed something funny about Mabel’s ear and she said, “Mabel, did you know you’ve got a suppository in your left ear? “ Mabel answered, “I have a suppository?” She pulled it out and stared at it. Then she said, “Ethel, I’m glad you saw this thing. Now I think I know where my hearing aid is.
A young man was walking through a supermarket to pick up a few things when he noticed an old lady following him around. Thinking nothing of it, he ignored her and continued on. Finally he went to the checkout line, but she got in front of him. “Pardon me,” she said, “I’m sorry if my staring at you has made you feel uncomfortable. It’s just that you look just like my son, who just died recently.” “I’m very sorry,” replied the young man, “is there anything I can do for you?” “Yes,” she said, “As I’m leaving, can you say ‘Good bye, Mother’? It would make me feel so much better.” “Sure,” answered the young man. As the old woman was leaving, he called out, “Goodbye, Mother!” As he stepped up to the checkout counter, he saw that his total was 127.50 euros. “How can that be?” He asked, “I only purchased a few things!” “Your mother said that you would pay for her,” said the clerk.
The local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just gotten married for the fourth time. The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband’s occupation.. “He’s a funeral director,” she answered. “Interesting,” the newsman thought... He then asked her if she wouldn’t mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living. She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she had first married a banker when she was in her 20’s, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40’s, and a preacher when in her 60’s, and now - in her 80’s - a funeral director. The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers. She smiled and explained, “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.”

An elderly couple had dinner at another couple’s house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, “Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly.” The other man said, “What is the name of the restaurant?” The first man thought and thought and finally said, “What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know... the one that’s red and has thorns.” “Do you mean a rose?” “Yes, that’s the one,” replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, “Rose, what’s the name of that restaurant we went to last night?”
A minister was invited to give a talk to the local Lions Club and spoke about sex. When he got home, he was embarrassed to tell his wife he had talked about sex and told her he had given a talk on horseback riding. A few days later she ran into some men at the shopping centre, and they told her how enjoyable her husband’s talk had been. She replied, “I’m pleased, but I was surprised about the subject matter. He’s only tried it twice, and the first time he was so sore he could hardly walk, and the second time he fell off!”
A middle aged woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. While on the operating table, she had a near death experience. Seeing God, she asked, “Is my time up?” God said, “No, you have another 43 years, 2 months and 8 days to live.” Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have a face lift, liposuction and tummy tuck. Since she had so much more time to live, she figured she might as well look even nicer. After her last operation, she was released from the hospital. While crossing the street on her way home, she was hit and killed by an ambulance. Arriving in front of God, she demanded, “I thought you said I had another 40 plus years? Why didn’t you pull me out of the path of the ambulance!?” God replied, “My child, I am sorry, I didn’t even recognize you!
She was standing in the kitchen preparing to boil eggs for breakfast, wearing only the “T” shirt that she normally slept in. As he walked in (almost awake), she turned and said softly, “You’ve got to make love to me this very moment.” His eyes lit up and he thought, “I am either still dreaming or this is going to be my lucky day.”
Not wanting to lose the moment, he embraced her and then gave it his all - right there on the kitchen table. Afterwards she said, “Thanks,” and returned to the stove, her “T” shirt around her neck. A little puzzled, he asked, “What was that all about?” She explained, “The egg timer’s broken.”
A woman on the phone to her friend; I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor’s permission to join a fitness club and start exercising... I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.
