ast year we commented on this page that the weather in October in this region has often been good, and also hot. Some people last year were saying, “When will it stop?”, and this year has been exactly the same. The rains that did fall have immediately resulted in green shoots in gardens and the countryside. Watering with tap water never has the same very quick effect.

as well. Unfortunately, Almería province as a whole is still one of the “Black spots”, as regards unemployment for young people. There are schemes to try and reduce the numbers, but not enough yet to make a substantial difference.

Right at the end of October last year there was a flash flood that marooned technicians in Tabernas, filming the “Book of Exodus”. The filming for the other biblical film “Clavius” is now under-way in the province, and gives Almeria another boost in film work and interest. When Arnold Schwarzenegger received his “Almería, Land of Film” award here last month, he came with Frederick Malmberg who is to make a new version of “Conan, the Barbarian” next year, and hopefully some parts of the filming will again come here. We have an important article (on p.28), dealing with registration on the municipal “Padrón”, the official list of residents in every municipality. If you are not on the padrón you ought to be, and if you are, have you registered to vote in the May 2015 municipal elections? The voter’s list is taken as those who have previously asked to vote, or new applicants as of December 30th. In places like Mojácar and Arboleas in particular, non-Spanish voters can make a very important contribution as to which parties run the councils for the next four years from 2015. This cannot happen if you haven't asked for a vote, so do it! At this time of the year, many bars, restaurants and some other businesses decide to shut. Beach bars are usually seasonal, but other restaurants have closed for holiday until the New Year, or even Easter! The income from clients has to be balanced by the running costs, including the staff. It is often a fine balancing act over, “Will we, or won't we?”. Foreign tourist numbers coming to Spain in JuneSeptember shot up to 31 million, another record number, and 7% more than 2013. Spanish nationals who came to this area also increased in numbers

It is good to see from our “What's On” section that autumn and winter cultural events are now being promoted, including those from local theatre groups. The annual “Almería en Corto” short film festival is set for December 2nd-6th. Prize money for the winners of the different categories is not as much as it used to be, but the competition attracts entries from all over the world, and is seen as a very prestigious event. It is another important “awareness” event for Almería internationally. Saturday, December 6th and Monday, December 8th are important national fiesta dates when many places are shut. The 6th is the anniversary of the Spanish constitution referendum in 1978, and the 8th is a religious fiesta date celebrating the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary. Avoid trying to visit official bodies on the Monday – they will be shut, including the banks! Shops and other businesses in Spain are now freed from the two strict time periods when sales could take place. Apart from the traditional January sales, large stores such as “El Corte Inglés” now have preChristmas sales to keep the tills ringing.

Focus on Local News It's Official! The Spanish Ministry of Transport has officially confirmed that the Murcia-Almería 'AVE' (High speed train) will be single track over all the sections. Their own “prediction” is that the likely traffic only justifies a single track. There are other 'AVE' lines that will be single track, including the Granada-Bobadilla stretch, but there is one significant difference. These sections will be single track initially, but built so that a second track can be added in the future. The Murcia-Almería line will be built as a single track only, so less land to expropriate, single track viaducts and cuttings, and electrification. This is reportedly going to save 3540% on average in costs. There is a practical, but very face-saving proposal. The existing completed base sections from Garrucha through Sorbas to Los Arejos have been built for double track, including the enormously expensive twin tunnels, the longest in Andalucía. It is suggested that the line on some of these sections may be double track, giving a “passing section”. Theoretically, with very sophisticated switching and timing, two high speed trains could pass each other in opposite directions (sounds hairy!). New projects and costings will be needed for all the other sections where work has not been started, so resulting in considerable delays. Critics say this is a disaster.

Albox town hall along with the builders, have been sentenced to pay 40,000 and 45,000 euros to the two homeowners, and 50,000 to the third intended purchaser, all fines for “moral damages”. They also have to pay 7,800 euros for rent paid out by the fourth family. The builder however, has declared their company bankrupt. The judge did not grant a requested demolition order, on the grounds it would serve no useful purpose, as the completed houses may now be able to be regularized (this relates to the proposed changes to the Junta de Andalucía “illegal houses” regulations). She accepted that all the UK purchasers acted in “good faith”. The two directors of the building company were sentenced to a prison term of 12 months (so a suspended sentence), on the grounds that they also knew the project was illegal. The technical architect and project manager were given a fine. Albox town hall intend to appeal this ruling, on the grounds it was a previous council, not them!

Albox Houses Compensation A court in Almería has issued what appears to be a landmark ruling. This relates to two completed houses, and one paralysed in mid construction, out of a total of seven planned to be built in the Las Palmeras area of Albox. The building was started in 2004 on land that was not classified as being urban under the town hall planning regulations. The judge, María Vidaurreta, ruled that Albox councillors at the time knew this, and did not stop the building work, verbally approved licences applied for in the names of the purchasers, and authorized connections of water and electricity. The project was advertised in the UK, by the Albox builder and promoter 'Construcciones Alto Almanzora', as a package that included the land and dwelling and all administrative fees and taxes, including water and electricity connexions. Two UK ex-pat families moved in, and live there today. A third family were buying the uncompleted house, but had to pull out. The

Spanish Digital TV Anyone watching the Spanish (TDT) digital television programmes will have found an instruction on October 26th asking them to allow the inbuilt, or set-top box, to carry out a complete update of all available channels. This is the start of the freeing of television channels needed by the telecommunications companies, for the “4G” services. The final date set by the EU for all the TV channels to be freed is the end of the year. Communities where the signal is rebroadcast from a central unit need special modifications. Focus on Local News paying for these modifications with a grant of between 100-550 euros. Technicians who will have to carry out these modifications state that for old existing community equipment the 550 euros may not cover the cost. Spanish consumer organizations are warning that there may well be some “cowboys” who offer to bodge this work at an exorbitant cost.

Ebola in Almería Health professionals at La Bola hospital, the centre of the 061 emergency health service response team, have heavily criticised the plan to take all Ebola victims in Almería province to Seville. For various reasons they say this is not viable using an ambulance. They say that the long journey would need 3 intermediate hospital stops at Guadix, Loja, and Osuno. Any person wearing the protective suits becomes extremely hot, and profuse sweating is a big problem. A special Spanish army medical corps is providing trained Ebola medics to help out (initially in Madrid), with specially adapted planes and a helicopter. Transport by air would seem to be the best solution. (We have an article dealing with Ebola in Almería province).

from Almería city needed to go to Seville or Málaga, three times a week, so a 200kms 8 hour journey by ambulance, and the treatment time. The parents and the Almería branch of the Association for Kidney Treatment, have persuaded the Torrecárdenas hospital to open a special unit. Initially it was thought that the set-up costs were too great, but funds have been found. One of the delighted mothers says that the whole family have had their lives drastically improved. A hospital teacher does reading practice with the children whilst connected to the equipment, and as the schools provide lessons to be learnt, this is now much easier to accomplish. Before, the children only went to school two days a week. One of the children is on a special list of persons urgently needing a transplant.

No Rain The amount of rainfall recorded in Spain goes from October to September the following year. Figures from the Spanish Meteorological Department from rainfall measured at the Almería airport weather station are the lowest in the last 30 years, and the 4th lowest since records were kept. Rainfall in the latest 12 month period was only 46% of the 20122013 year. In actual amounts of rain, only 101 litres per square metre have fallen in the last period. In imperial measurements this is 4 inches (10 centimetres). In the 2012-2013 period it was 219 litres per square metre, so just under 9 inches, (22 centimetres). The storms at the end of September this year improved these figures, in our Levante region, but not dramatically throughout the province. In this area rainfall is also measured in Albox, Vélez Blanco, Cabo de Gata, and Garrucha.

“ITV” & Radar

The Spanish traffic authority (DGT) have now put into use the software that enables vehicles photographed going through fixed speed radar points to be checked against current “ITV” (MOT) data. They consider that this is a vital tool in their campaigns to make sure vehicles are tested when due. Some drivers have been prosecuted already. According to current information, as many as 34,000 drivers have no current “ITV”. Cars without a test certificate are usually found to be in need of repairs, and the average age of vehicles in Almería province is considered a very bad situation, with 262,500 cars that are registered as being over 9 years old. 600 Houses in Limbo The Junta de Andalucía high court have ruled that 643 assorted properties in Cuevas del Almanzora, houses, business premises, and some underground garages are illegal. There have been a total of 13 court sentences in recent months, making a total of 26. Cuevas town hall have had to nullify their town hall licences in every case, so all the properties are in limbo. In one court case the judges ruled that the land was designated as being for community use, such as a school, sports facilities, a council administration building, but not the 50 houses built there. The court have stated that their sentences are related to the current legal situation of all the properties, not the legal process that would possibly lead to fines, prison terms, or demolition orders. The councillor for urban projects, Juan José López, says that all this can be rectified when their overall planning document (PGOU) is revised, hopefully before the end of this year. He goes on to state that none of the properties are on land that would stop them being legalized for any reason.

The mayoress, Rosa María Cano, has signed up to spend 830,000 euros of taxpayers money, towards the 1.66 million euros estimated cost, with the difference being funded by the coastal authority “Costas”. It has emerged however that the 830,000 euros is a fixed price, not just 50% of the cost. Opposition councillors point out that the Garrucha, Carboneras and Almería promenades, amongst others, were funded entirely by the “Costas” department, and ask why Mojácar should have to pay anything at all? They say that if the actual cost came down to 1.3 million euros, Mojácar ratepayers still have to pay the 830,000 euros. The mayoress says that this is an “ambitious” plan, contributing to the tourist attraction of the town. Opposition councillors say that it is not at all ambitious, and a very poor deal for Mojácar. Tenders had to be in by October 14th, and the construction phase is given as 14 months.

Marble Museum and Tours The tourist department in Macael have set up a “Made in Macael” organization that specializes in information relating to the marble industry. They have a visitors’ centre with an exhibition of marble, mining, and the consequent work needed in the conversion to products, and an area for talks about the history of the area. They also organize visits to various mines, factories, and artesian workshops where marble sculpture is undertaken. The tourist department have signed an agreement with Mojácar, when hotel visitors come there as part of the subsidized holidays from the Spanish government “Inserso” programme.

Planned Walks Huércal-Overa have published their 2014/2015 schedule for walks in the area. They have 8 routes that will be organized until next May. They consider that the immediate area is ideal for walks of different time durations and difficulty, and have had a good response in previous years. The walkers also explore the general area of Huércal-Overa, adding to the tourist attraction. Some new routes have been worked out, with the first of the new routes being a distance of 15 kms, with an increase in height of 240 metres. They also have a related photography competition,

Huércal-Overa Hospital Row Hospital workers are up in arms over the continued closure of 30 beds, normally reserved for surgical patients, and that some staff have been laid off. As is normal during the high season summer period, less routine operations are scheduled as many staff are on holiday. This reduction in beds will continue to the end of December, when it will be reviewed. The mayor of Huércal-Overa has met with the hospital staff and states that this is a political and funding measure only, not related to health considerations. The Junta de Andalucía health delegate, Alfredo Valvidia, came here recently and said that with only 53% of the available beds occupied, this reduction was entirely appropriate. He said that when 'flu victims started to need beds a review would be made then. The hospital medical director says that the surgical, anaesthesia and pathology departments are all working normally, and only 21 beds are involved. If an accident victim, or a patient needing an appendix operation arrived, they would be promptly dealt with.

In 1966, a US bomber plane carrying 4 unarmed nuclear bombs collided with a US tanker aircraft whilst attempting to refuel over Palomares. Three bombs were jettisoned over land, and the fourth one fell into the sea. There is some plutonium contamination to this day, but the US authorities keep saying they will deal with it. Manuel Fraga was the Spanish Minister of Tourism at the time, and he came to Palomares with the then US ambassador to Spain. They very briefly went into the sea at Palomares to “prove” that the water was not contaminated, but press photographs were mostly taken opposite the Mojácar Parador hotel. Cuevas town hall want to name a street in his honour, and intend to do this, but opposition councillors and many inhabitants are strongly against this. They say his “swimming” served no useful purposes and he was ridiculed at the time as being an idiot. They also point out that he was a minister in the Franco era, and Franco symbols on buildings

Focus on Local News continued have mostly been taken down. When he died last year he was hailed as one of the founding fathers of the Spanish constitution, but Palomares residents ask, “so what?”. An Águilas fisherman eventually told the US navy where he had seen the fourth nuclear missile land in the sea, whilst he was fishing, and it was recovered. Bartolomé Roldán also rescued two of the US airmen who had parachuted down. Last year, after 47 years he was thanked by the US pilot in a video conference that took place in Águilas. He is rightly considered a hero, and a street has been named in his honour in the town, with no complaints.

An Amazing Idea The rail line known as the “Almanzora way” was closed on January 1st 1985. It went from Almendricos in Murcia, through Huércal-Overa, Zurgena, Arboleas, Albox-Almanzora, Cantoria-Partaloa, Fines, Olula, Purchena, Tijola, and on to Baza and Guadix with a total of 20 stations. Large sections of the former track are now part of the “green way”, for cyclists and walkers with many of the stations put to other use. The Purchena one is a restaurant with a very good reputation. The Spanish Ministry of Transport has earmarked 100,000 euros in their 2015 budget, for a feasibility study to open it up again as a goods railway! This idea is partly because the new “AVE” (High speed train) line is only going to be mixed passenger/goods single track. “Fermed”, an influential railways lobby group, thinks that from Almendricos a line could go inland to Baza and Guadix, joining up with the Granada province “AVE” station at Moreda. The further proposal is that this goods line would extend from Águilas to Pulpí, Vera, Cuevas, Sorbas and then through Nijar to Almería city. There is already an existing working line from Murcia-Águilas. “Fermed” also propose a goods line coastal link from Carboneras and Almería ports, then on to the ports of Motril and Málaga, none of which have railway access at present.

Mojácar Row Number 2 The famous village underground car park beside the church in Mojácar village, cost just under 2 million euros, with car parking for only 37 vehicles. It would certainly not have been started, if the mayoress Rosa María Cano and her “PP” party councillors did not have a majority following the council elections in

2011. No car has ever used it so far. There has always been a fierce debate over who would be able to use it. A lottery was proposed at one stage for Mojácar village residents. In reality, each space cost 45,000 euros to build. It has emerged that the mayoress, her partner, her partner's brother (not a Mojácar resident), one of the “PP” councillors, and a brother of another “PP” councillor are to have parking spaces for life. Opposition councillors are horrified, saying they always thought this would happen, and all the parking spaces should be made available for rent, not sold! The cost of the lifetime parking spaces is stated to be an average of 15,000 euros each. Opposition councillors say that this is the last straw, and the mayoress should resign forthwith! They are bitterly opposed to the car park not being used for the general benefit of Mojácar village residents, who could park on the surface for free, before the underground car park was built.

Toll Roads Many of the companies operating toll roads in Spain are in severe financial straits, including bankruptcy. This is because the predicted volume of traffic, given by the Ministry of transport at the time they were built, is completely false in practice. The AlicanteCartagena toll road, with up to 19,000 users per day, is one of the few that are just about viable, and bank loans can be repaid, or extended credit advanced. The Cartagena-Vera toll road is one of the disasters for the consortium that built it. The Spanish government are to absorb all the toll roads with severe financial problems into a new state-owned company. 50% of the debts will be absorbed, (so in effect written off for the operators), and the balance

Focus on Local News continued of the remaining debts by the consortiums spread over a 30 year repayment scheme. The most spectacular toll road that is a complete disaster is the one from the Barajas airport to Madrid. Total vehicle traffic was estimated at 50,000 vehicles a day. Average daily numbers are 7,200! Cynics say that of the 7,200, many drivers do not look at the road signs, and get on it by mistake.

El Algarrobico Hotel The ecology group “Salvemos Mojácar” started a High Court case recently, trying to assert that the three magistrates were wrong, when they ruled that the 2003 building licence, given for the hotel by Carboneras council was legal. The High court rejected their claim on the grounds that it was no different to a previous court case, brought by the ecology group previously. The first court case was “archived” (so stopped) and this latest one suffered the same fate. The hotel has been erroneously partly built within the “maritime boundary”, a boundary a certain distance from a beach. The high court determined that this was another issue, entirely different to their present claims.

Opened in 2009, they analyse samples from this hospital, along with those from El Toyo in Almería province, Guadix, and Loja hospitals in Granada, as well as from all the medical centres in the area. Medical experts from various countries have come to see how they do it. They can handle 25,000 analyses a day, over 24hrs, equivalent to 6 million per annum. Robotic equipment, and a staff of 22 people carry out the tests. Every blood sample, swab, biopsy, or pathology sample is labelled with a unique identification number before being sent in, and logged on their main computer. Staff work shifts to give a 24hr service. Blood tests can be accomplished in periods of 1-2hrs, with samples that have to be “cultured” speeded up as well.

Pedro Llamas October 22nd was the day the prosecution and defence lawyers put forward a summary of their claims in the Zurgena “illegal houses” case involving Pedro Llamas and a constructor. The lawyer for Pedro Llamas was claiming that a previous court had ruled that Pedro Llamas was not guilty of these charges, on the grounds that the status of the land in El Cucador, with regard to it being urban, or not urban, was unclear. The new judge in the new court, ruled that the previous court ruling was very woolly, and they should re-examine the case, and land designation. Apart from Pedro Llamas, the previous court ruling related to 6 councillors at the time who approved the building licence. When the previous court has clarified their original decision, it is expected that the new court case will continue, on the grounds that the original ruling was “bad in law”.

The NATO Exercise On various occasions, a NATO exercise involving navy, army, and air forces, takes place off the coast of Cartegena and Almería down to the gulf of Cádiz. The latest one, “Noble Mariner”, took place for 10 days from October 16th. 16 NATO states took part, with observers from various countries, and it involved 25 warships, 6 submarines, 25 planes and 4,000 troops. A military helicopter had to abort an intended landing at the Viator legionnaire base near Almería city. It landed safely on a piece of waste ground at HuércalOvera, where mechanics were sent to repair it.

“Illegal” Houses Legislation María Jesús Serrano, the Junta de Andalucía Delegate for the Environment, has revealed more details of how the regulations known as “LOUA”, relating to “illegal” houses are to be changed. As promised, this will enable dwellings on segregated plots to be “recognized”, not easily possible at present. This is stated to affect 20-25,000 properties in Andalucía, the majority of these being in Málaga and Almería province. The amended regulations are designed to be made law in a maximum of 4 months. She stresses

that this is not a “general amnesty”, nor will the properties be fully legal. Instead, they will be taken out of the legal limbo they are in at present. This will not apply to properties built in the last 6 years, built in riverbeds, special protection areas because of plants and animals, or natural park land. In addition the court cases in the pipeline will not be stopped, but hopefully no more demolition orders approved. Town halls have to prepare dossiers (if they don't exist at present), on all the properties that will now be “recognized” within 2 years. This process is known as “asimilado fuera de ordenación”. She considers that the changes need to be done for the “social justice” of those purchasers who bought in good faith, so a big step forward. Once “recognized”, no building extensions to the properties can be made, unfortunately. Ecologists, who don't live in these properties of course, say that this action regularizes properties that should never have been built in the first place, spoil the areas, and the new regulations should not be put into place.

So Now You Know... 'Ryanair' The Irish airline company 'Ryanair' was founded in 1985. It was called 'Ryanair' after the Irish businessman Tony Ryan. Liam Lonergan was another owner who had an Irish travel agency “Club Travel”. The first flights were between Waterford and Gatwick using a 15 seater 'Embraer Bandeirante” turboprop aircraft. Until this time, 'British Airways' & 'Aer Lingus' had the monopoly. In 1986, with partial EU deregulation, they again competed with these two airlines by flying from Dublin to Luton. They needed the approval of one of the countries involved. The Irish government refused them permission to safeguard 'Aer Lingus' but Margaret Thatcher approved it. With two planes they carried 82,000 passengers in the first year.

Camels There are now two distinct species of camels, the Dromedary with one “hump”, and the larger Batrican camel with two humps. Their main use is still for transport of humans and goods, particularly in desert areas where they can walk on sand, where normal vehicles would get stuck. Camels generally live for 4050 years, and can run at 40mph in short bursts, or a normal speed of 25mph. Camels do not store water in their humps; they are a reservoir of fatty tissue that metabolises to produce water. When they breathe out, water vapour is trapped in their nostrils, and re-absorbed into their bodies. The fatty hump also helps camels survive in very hot temperatures, up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, when other animals would die.

Bidets The bidet is considered to be an invention of a French furniture maker to the French royal family, probably Christophe Des Rosiers. There is a written reference to a bidet being used in 1710 in Italy. It was originally placed in bedrooms, alongside chamber pots. By the early 1900s, the general improvements in plumbing with running water saw the bidet moved into a bathroom area. It was still an item that was found mostly in royal households and wealthy families. Bidets are now considered a normal item for a bathroom in southern European countries, particularly Italy, Spain and Portugal. In contrast, in France where they were first used, they are still not standard or considered to be essential bathroom equipment.

Boxing A wall painting from the 3rd millennium BC is the earliest known depiction of boxing. Fist fighting with leather thongs or gloves is considered to have started in Greece between 1500 and 900 BC. Boxing was a popular sport in Ancient Rome in the amphitheatres, and metal studs were fixed to the leather thongs. Fighting continued until the death of one of the combatants. Slaves then became the normal fighters, in a circle marked on the ground, where the term “ring” comes from. In 400 AD, boxing in Rome was stopped as being too brutal. In the 17th century, boxing matches started in London, and in 1743 the “Broughton's rules” were introduced by champion Jack Broughton. If a man went down for 30 seconds and could not continue, the fight was over.

The World's Largest Church The Guinness book of records credits the “Basilica of Our Lady of Peace” at Yamoussoukro, in the Ivory Coast, as being the world's largest church. It was built from 1985-1989, inspired by St Peter's basilica in Rome, and cost 300 million dollars. It was consecrated as a Catholic basilica by Pope John Paul in 1990. The Lebanese architect, Pierre Fakhuri, used very large amounts of Italian marble and 7,000 sq mts of contemporary French stained glass. It has an area of 30,000 sq mts, and the dome is 158 mts high. Very large internal columns hold lifts, rainwater pipes, and other services. Included in the area are a rectory and a villa for papal visits. It can accommodate 18,000 worshippers, but is not a cathedral; there is one nearby, the seat of the bishop.

Circus Clowns The traditional circus clown is called a “whiteface”. They function as the most important type of circus clown, with white make-up covering their whole face and neck. Exaggerated features are painted on with red or black paint. They are not considered to be just comic characters. Their typical costume has a ruffled collar and pointed hat, known as a “clown suit”. “Auguste” clowns are the ones who get pies in the face, are squirted with water, and knocked down. They usually have baggy pants and coloured wigs, and oversized noses and shoes. The “character clown” is usually dressed as a policeman, butcher, or housewife. In American circuses they often play a tramp, or a “hobo”, wearing shabby and crumpled clothing.

The Importance of the “Padrón”

very municipality keeps a register of inhabitants, “el padrón municipal de habitantes”, or “padrón”for short, and getting on this list is called “el empadronamiento”. There are advantages for each town hall to have as many people registered as possible, and this is reflected in many services that all citizens benefit from. For many administrative dealings, individual people need a certificate that confirms they are on this register, and there is currently one really important reason why you should be registered. Registration on the “padrón” is confidential, and details are not passed to any other authority, only the totals. In theory, all inhabitants in any municipality should legally be on the register, but in practice it is voluntary. Your municipality uses the total number of people to be able to apply to have more health workers, teachers, police, a civil defence unit (only available with sufficient numbers), grants and subsidies. All citizens benefit from the number of registered inhabitants.

If you are not sure whether you can go on, or what you need, ask your town hall or a councillor. When the appropriate paperwork has been done, within a few days you can ask for the official certificate, for a very small charge. A free shortened version, “volante de empadronamiento” may be all you need to produce for other bodies. You may be told that your certificate needs to be dated within the last 90 days, so you get another one! Inhabitants on the “padrón” should renew their application every five years if official residents, or two years if not. It is always a good idea to check now and then that you are still registered. As an individual person, a certificate is needed to apply for a nursery or school place for your children, to get married, or to register with the health service (if you are a pensioner you can obtain discounts on travel, or organized trips). When you buy a Spanish car from a dealer, they may ask for a certificate, or not. If you are an official resident in Andalucía, and have a Spanish will and your inheritors can get special tax relief by also being residents, they need the certificates. Electricity and the New Bills

The electricity supply companies complained bitterly, but a government review concluded the price increase was a fix.

The leaflet sent out refers to a lot of the new information listed on your bill, and your consumer rights. They point out that by 2018, all electricity meters will be “intelligent”. The new meters will transmit data and show the consumption in real time, if you want to watch it! Meter readers will in theory be redundant. Some tips for energy savings are listed, such as using low energy bulbs. They recommend that for air-con heating units, or other electrical heating, a temperature of 2123 degrees is quite adequate. In summer they say a temperature of 23-25 degrees is sufficient. They point out that new appliances (including aircon), now have to be of a high energy rating of A+, A++, and A+++. Upgrading to one of these more efficient models will give substantial savings if your existing equipment is quite old. They recommend that you only run a washing machine or dishwasher with a full load, and use cold water cycles where appropriate. They claim this is better for clothes and utensils, and saves money. Finally, they tell you to not leave equipment on “standby”. Quite good advice.

Ebola in Spain & Almería Province

ospitals and some medical centres in Almería province now have supplies of the special suits, gloves, masks, and the training to combat Ebola. Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería city has a special isolation and observation unit set up, but will be a temporary containment hospital, as the Virgen del Rocío hospital in Seville is the major designated one for Ebola cases in Andalucía. Staff at the Bola Azul 061 emergency ambulance and helicopter call-out centre in Almería city say that transport by road is completely impractical; it would require three intermediate hospital stops. Experience in a simulated response wearing the Ebola suits showed how extremely hot staff became, in only a short time. There has been one false alarm so far in the province. A Nigerian man went to a Roquetas health centre with 'flu-like symptoms and a high temperature. He was isolated, an ambulance took him to Torrecárdenas, and eventually Malaria was diagnosed. It was lucky that it was only Malaria as all the safety procedures were not in place. In Spain, two Spanish missionaries and a nun/nurse working with Ebola patients in Africa were flown back to Madrid after contracting the disease. The Spanish government twice sent a special plane, but the two quite elderly men died, although the nun survived. Transferring a missionary at Madrid airport

At the Carlos III Madrid hospital, they are experienced in treating infectious diseases but the intensive isolation rooms had been shut and had to be quickly re-opened. The Spanish auxiliary

nurse, Teresa Romero, helped care for the second missionary who died. She dealt with his highly infectious body, and collected bedding to be incinerated. She may possibly have touched her face with an infected glove, but doubts have been cast regarding the impermeability of the Wellington boots used at that time. Similarly, it is still not known how two nurses treating the Texas Ebola patient who died became infected. Within 5-7 days, there are 'flu like symptoms, fever, headaches, sore throat, and muscle pain, then leading to diarrhoea and vomiting. The problem is that these symptoms are very similar to Malaria, Typhoid fever, and severe 'flu. Blood tests, maybe over several days are needed. Teresa went on leave after the missionary died and was due to go away. She didn't, as she thought she had the 'flu. A visit to her local doctor resulted in the same conclusion and paracetamol was prescribed. When she told the Ebola staff at the hospital after a few days that she still had 'flu-like symptoms but a temperature of only 37 degrees, no-one was very concerned; but the paracetamol had reduced her “real” temperature. She called in again several times, and eventually an ambulance was requested by the Carlos III unit. The ambulance staff thought it was just a routine call out and took her to the nearest hospital. When the Ebola blood test she asked for came back positive after a few hours, she had to be transferred to Carlos III, and the unit she had worked in. She was followed by the nine medical staff she had been in contact with, all put into quarantine. Teresa says it never entered her head that it wasn't the 'flu. The “critical” temperature has now been reduced to 37.7, instead of 38.6 degrees. Many lessons have been learnt, as in retrospect it was a catalogue of errors. 50% of infected people survive but exactly why, no-one is sure. Fortunately, Teresa has survived as well, after intensive expert treatment involving more than 50 hospital staff. Her husband who was quarantined is also clear, but unfortunately their dog “Excalibur” was put down.

The Vera Photo Club was started by Stan Roberts a couple of years ago and now has over 100 members, of which 30 will be exhibiting. “Las Señales del Tiempo” (Signs of the Time) is a travelling exhibition that will go to various municipalities in Almería province. Out of a total of 89 photos submitted from 30

photographers, the winner of the competition was Zuleika García. Her 20 photographs depict parts of the body relating to elderly people, such as hands, eyes, or lips, showing the signs of old age. The identity of the photographers who sent in examples of their work was kept anonymous. By complete chance, two other series of photographs receiving special mentions were submitted by Diego and Leonor García, brother and sister of Zuleika. The 2014 “Tapas Route” in Huércal-Overa is from November 7th-16th. Various bars and restaurants compete to be given awards for the best tapas. Arboleas F.A.C.E Christmas Night Fayre The support group “Fund-raising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone” have their annual Christmas Night Market/Fayre on Friday, Dec 5th from 6 pm in a marquee at Arboleas Townhall. The Lotus Yoga centre in Mojacar is having an open day on November 8th from 11am-3pm. Visitors can try a free sample class of yoga, with 4 classes running throughout the day, as well as taster therapy sessions of shiatsu, reflexology, reiki, and massage, and talks on therapies. There will be a large rastro and stalls selling food, organic vegetables, jewellery, drinks etc, along with a “best cake” competition. If you have never tried, or know nothing about yoga, this is an opportunity to come along and find out all about us as well as having a fun inspiring day. charity run by qualified Integral Hatha Yoga teachers who donate their time to support many different charities. Over the last 2 years, they have donated over 3,400 euros to Medicine without Frontiers, money to Caritas, a hospice in Rishikesh, and recently to AIMUR, a charity based in Almeria that supports abused and trafficked women and children. The director says that he's brilliant and has got the part; all he needs to do is turn up on the night, after the interval, as his line is right at the start of the second act. On the night of the play, the actor is running late due to traffic. He runs up to the theatre, but a bouncer stops him, "Who are you?" "I'm 'Hark, I hear the cannons roar!'" "You're 'Hark, I hear the cannons roar!'? You're late, get to make-up quickly!" The actor rushes up to make-up, where a woman stops him, "Who are you?" "I'm 'Hark, I hear the cannons roar!'" In New York the new buses have a pretty steep first ledge to get on them. A woman wearing a tight skirt tries to get on. She reaches her leg up but it’s no good. Group Photo You know you're ugly when your friends want a group photo and hand you the camera. The Blonde One day, a brunette, a redhead, and a blonde were set to be executed.
