number of indicators suggest that Spain may be coming out of the recession, or the general attitude is more optimistic. This Easter, the numbers of visitors to our region meant that hotels were 80-85% full. Restaurants and the coastal beach bars in particular, watched the influx of clients with delight. One long standing Mojácar beach bar owner was of the opinion that the large numbers of Spanish tourists either thought that things were better now, or decided that the crisis had gone on long enough - so “Let’s have a break!” Some restaurant owners had to ask their favourite question, “Have you booked?”

15th is a major fiesta date in Madrid to celebrate the saint’s day of San Isidro. He was a farmer who is reputed to have made great efforts to help the poor, and probably died about 1172.

Almería airport handled 260 flights in the eleven day period from the Friday before Easter week to the following Monday, Easter bank holiday Monday in the UK. The Vera-Cartegena toll road operators were amazed to find that numbers went up by nearly 4%. 10 million foreign tourists came to Spain during January to March, 8% up on 2013 that was a record year for tourism. Indications are that 2014 numbers may be even better. Unrest in countries such as Egypt continues to mean higher visitors to Spain. Car sales are also well up, with the 5th “PIVE” discounts off the price of a low emission vehicle still proving very popular. April vehicle leasing figures always show a boost when the large rental companies increase their stock. Another sign of willingness to spend money occurred when the Rolling Stones tickets for their June 25th Madrid concert went on sale. The Internet booking websites completely crashed after just a few seconds. Later the same day, all of the 85-225 euros tickets were snapped up.

In Spain, cities, towns and villages choose a male and female patron saint. Quite often, at least one of their saint’s days is in spring or summer when the weather is good. San Isidro is one of the patron saints for Mojácar, Los Gallardos, Sorbas, Turre, Tabernas and Tijola. In these places, expect to find town halls, banks and other offices shut for the day. There is usually a procession called a Romería into the country with decorated farm vehicles, food and drink. Friday, June 13th is another saint’s day, this time for San Antonio de Padua (Saint Anthony of Padua). Carboneras, Vera and Vélez Blanco have chosen him as one of their patron saints. In this case the fiesta celebrations may well spill over into the weekend. The Mojácar Moors and Christians event is from Friday, June 6thSunday June 8th.

The month of May is the time when the children of practicing Catholics attend their “first communion” (primera comunión). Bridesmaid’s type dresses and sailor suits are usually the favourite choice of clothes. Spanish restaurants and hotels hope to host a following meal for parents, family and friends. Nowadays they are normally a little less lavish, but serious amounts of money may well change hands. Thursday, May

A row has broken out in Mojácar because this year the major supermarkets had to close on the Thursday and Good Friday fiesta dates. In Garrucha, Vera and Carboneras it was business as usual. The problem in Mojácar was caused when the application for the renewal of the town as having special tourist status had not been made. The previous licence from the Junta de Andalucía expired at the end of last year.

Focus on Local News “Pirate” Taxis Almería taxi drivers have complained for years about the “pirate” taxis that convey passengers to and from the airport and rail station. Because of this, a local police office was opened at Almería airport working in conjunction with the taxi associations and other traffic police. In all of Andalucía in 2013 there were 140 proceedings started against these illegal taxis, and 13 in Almería province. The fine is a minimum of 4,000 euros followed by the confiscation of the vehicle. Up to now this has occurred after the offence has been reported and proceedings started. A new amendment to the regulations will mean that at the moment the illegal taxi operator is stopped and reported, the vehicle will be impounded straight away. In the unlikely event that the fine and offence are not confirmed, the vehicle would then be returned to the owner. Apart from the taxi drivers being defrauded out of their normal fares, the passengers in the illegal taxis have no insurance cover. Taxi drivers at the station and the airport log the registration numbers of vehicles they consider are regular offenders. There will be a more thorough crackdown this year. Rolling Stones say “Sorry!” Within a few seconds of the Rolling Stones tickets for their Madrid concert on June 25th going on sale on April 2nd, the internet booking agency sites totally crashed. Messages such as “impossible to process your request”, or “too many users”, continued for most of the day. Telephone bookings suffered the same fate. Eventually, the tickets costing 85-225 euros went on sale and totally sold out. The Rolling Stones put out a message on Twitter apologizing. Tickets for the Holland venue sold out in 30 minutes, those for Paris in 1 hour, and in Rome within 2 hours. Train Competition At present, only “Renfe” operate and sell tickets for trains. Passenger numbers have increased by a substantial amount after special reductions and discounts came into place last year, not just on the “AVE” (High speed trains), but throughout the

service. New regulations are to allow other companies to apply for a licence to compete with Renfe. The very large coach company “Alsa” has become the first company to have been given the necessary permissions that make it eligible to apply. “Alsa” at present operate a goods service on the trains, and are part of the UK National Express group.

Museums Popular Up to the end of March, 13,500 people visited the various museums in Almería city. The “Antonio de Torres” guitar museum is proving extremely popular since it opened last December and has received 3,700 visitors. The Spanish Civil war underground galleries, opened and restored in 2005-2006 continue to be a big attraction. Some 1.5 kilometres of the total length of 4.5 kilometres are open to the public. 3,700 people have been to this attraction. The Old Almería Station Last month, we featured the original Almería railway station in an article. It is considered an architectural jewel and an important example of industrial and cultural heritage. The railways administrator “Adif”, part of the Spanish transport authority, has now advertised a new use. Along with the major Puerta de Atoche station in Madrid and the Estación de Francia in Barcelona, the Almería station can now be rented out. Events or filming are on offer. For filming a commercial by an international company the cost may be as much as 4,800 euros per day. Photographic sessions, or social functions will cost less. “Adif” intend that apart from making some

Focus on Local News use of stations such as Almería that are at present shut, the publicity from film makers or “spot” commercials will be good for the cities involved. Altogether throughout Spain some 112 railway stations of various sizes are included on the list.

“Roaming” Charges Abolished The EU parliament has finally decided that all “roaming” charges between EU states will be abolished by December 15th 2015. This practice of charging extra if a person from one EU state uses their mobile or internet provider in another state, is said to bring in two billion euros for the providers, and potentially affect 500 million users. More detailed information and a cap on charges will be announced on July 1st. The EU parliament considers that the mobile or internet suppliers will in fact gain some more business with the new system. Surveys have shown that 75% of people deliberately limit their calls when abroad, or internet access, or resort to text messages instead of voice calls. This abolition of the roaming charges was first agreed in 2010, but has only now been put into EU law. Airport Figures The new Air Europa flights from Almería to Madrid during March are said to be partly responsible for a 15% increase in passengers with respect to March 2013. 47,000 passengers used the airport. During the first quarter of 2014 some 900 flights in or out were logged, with a total passenger number of 102,000. These figures were also up on 2013. More Hotel Opening At present, throughout Andalucía, some 54% of all hotels shut for the winter. The Andalucían tourist board in Seville is hoping that this can be decreased by 5% per year until 2020. Part of this plan is to attract more winter tourists from the UK, France, Germany and the Nordic countries, from more attendance at major tourism events abroad. They want to offer mini-breaks that are competitively priced. They also consider that there is an untapped market for events in or near a hotel for young people, or pensioners. They envisage that some grants may be made available for hotels that decide

to stay open, with a reduction in “IBI” (rates) amounts, or tax relief. If these ideas prove viable the hotels will be also be able to give more continuous employment to staff, and avoid layof fs and unemployment benefit costs.

Garrucha Parking The long awaited underground parking project, just off the Garrucha paseo, is now 95% complete. Underground water leaks have meant that four cisterns to hold 12,000 litres each have been installed, with the collected water destined for street cleaning and municipal garden use. The initial budget of 5.4 million euros rose in price to just under 10 million. To finish the work, the Almería county council gave a grant of 900,000 euros from the budgets of 2012-2014 in one advance payment. There are spaces for 204 cars and the prices for use and any long term discounts will soon be published. Parking in Garrucha is at present quite a problem, and in summer months a nightmare. Even at the high cost of 10 million euros for 204 parking spaces, this is a better deal than the 37 (never used) underground parking places in Mojácar village that cost 2 million euros. “Illegal” Houses According to the Spanish press, the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) is considering changing part of its complicated housing law, known as “LOUA”, to help ‘regularize’ the 13,000 homes, mostly belonging to foreign nationals in the Almanzora Valley, where there are threats of demolition in some cases. Another 64% said that the contracted speed was much less than the actual speeds obtained. In Spain, Vodafone have recently taken over Ono, and Orange is about to merge with Jazztel.

Traffic Regs The DGT Spanish traffic authority has announced that from May 9th all children under the age of 16 have to wear cycle helmets on any road. Suitable models are stated to be available at a cost of 10 euros or less. The fine for not wearing a helmet is 100 euros, with the bicycle then having to be pushed, or collected. How the fine will be collected from unaccompanied children will be the responsibility of the parent. Adults still have to wear a helmet outside of urban areas. Vera Bull School The Vera bullring is the oldest bullring in Almería province, and bullfighting is seen as an important part of the tourist or cultural heritage in the town. Each year, the Hotel Terraza Carmona sponsor events and are major organizers of the annual activities. A bullfighting course has been announced to promote the activity in the town and encourage young people to find out what is involved in all aspects. A Madrid court, along with a similar court decision a few days before, has ruled that, “Whether we like it or not”, a Spanish court case cannot be undertaken in similar circumstances, unless it can be proved that the offences took place in Spanish territorial waters, or involved a Spanish national, or Spain was definitely the actual destination of the boat and drugs. This boat and another one were intercepted in international waters off Spain, and was a joint operation involving customs from France and Italy. The arrested people have been deported, instead of being tried in court. The judge ruled that changes in the Spanish justice system gave him no option, but the drugs could be destroyed. He stated that “The law is the law, unfortunately in these circumstances, whether it seems right or not.” Lots of Flights Between Friday, April 11th, considered the start of the Easter holiday period, and Monday, April 21st, Almería airport handled 260 flights, with 32,000 passengers. Cuevas del Almanzora reservoir

Better Water A group of politicians and functionaries recently visited the Cuevas reservoir to inspect the new major pipeline for water linking the Cuevas installation with the Negratín-Almanzora and Tajo-Segura supplies. These pipelines were damaged beyond repair when the enormous floods occurred in September 2012. This repaired water supply has meant that water from the Cuevas reservoir does not have to be mixed with other water for domestic use. The available water is enough to supply 150,000 people and irrigation water for 24,000 hectares in the Levante area. It is still hoped that money can be made available to repair the nearby desalination plant that was wrecked in the same floods. It is estimated that 20 million euros is needed to repair the facility. Yoghurt Dates On April 11th, the Spanish Ministry of Food and Agriculture ruled that yoghurts will now have a “best by” date on them, decided by the manufacturer, but not the rigid 28 day expiry date, in force since 2003. There are six categories of yoghurts subject to the new regulations, according to whether they are natural yoghurt, or have fruit or sugar in them, other additives, or are pasteurized. This brings Spain in line with other EU states. Apart from being a measure designed to stop yoghurts being thrown away whilst they are still perfectly edible, it will mean that exported yoghurt from Spain will not be subject to the old time period, and will now be more competitive.

So Now You Know... Filter Coffee In 1908, Melitta Bentz, a housewife from Germany, was looking for a way to brew coffee without it becoming bitter, due to the common over brewing of coffee machines at the time. She experimented with pouring boiling water over coffee through different types of paper. She eventually found that a type of blotting paper was the most effective and the filter coffee system was born. In December of that year, Melitta and her husband Hugo founded the ‘Melitta Bentz Company’ selling over 1200 paper coffee filter jugs in 1909. A version using an electric element to heat the coffee then followed. ‘Melitta Bentz’ also patented vacuumpacked coffee in 1962. Alarm Clocks The ‘Seth Thomas Clock Company’ was granted a patent in 1876 for a small bedside alarm clock, believed to be the first clock of this type for domestic use. The Westclox “Moonbeam” alarm clock, introduced in 1949, flashed a light on and off, and then a buzzer sounded. The first Westclox “Drowse” (snooze) alarms were sold in 1959 and could be set for five or ten minutes snooze time. A much earlier German “Tugaslugabed” alarm clock would wake you by pulling a loop round your toe. Eight seconds before the set time an alarm would ring, and then at the set time this clock bolted to the floor would pull hard on the loop, to awake the soundest of sleepers! Brass bands The brass band dates back to the early 19th century and England's Industrial Revolution. With increasing urbanization, employers began to finance company bands to decrease the political activity of the working classes during their leisure time. By 1860 there were over 750 brass bands in England alone. Although these bands were not fully comprised of brass instruments until the second half of the 19th century, the tradition developed to the present day instruments of cornets, horns, trombones, euphoniums, and percussion, with normally 28-30 amateur players. Originally, coalmines and mills funded the bands and many retain their corporate sponsorship today.

Wheelchairs King Philip II, who was the King of Spain during the 16th century, used a very elaborate wheelchair that had both armrests and leg rests. In the 18th century the first wheelchair similar in design to those available today was developed with large front wheels and a single wheel at the back. A US patent was issued for a wood and wicker design in 1894, used by veterans of the Civil War and then the First World War. By 1932, engineer Harry Jennings had built the first folding, tubular steel wheelchair. This wheelchair was built for a paraplegic friend of Jennings called Herbert Everest. Together they founded Everest & Jennings, a company that monopolized the wheelchair market for many years. Dry Batteries The first “dry cell” battery was patented in 1892 in Japan and eliminated the risk of spilling liquids from “wet” batteries. The first mass-produced model was the Columbia dry cell, first marketed in 1896. Until the late 1950s, these zinc carbon batteries were very popular but the relatively low battery life hampered sales. In 1955, Lewis Urry, an engineer working for the US Union Carbide company, invented alkaline batteries that lasted much longer. Lithium batteries were invented in 1997, enabling the battery to be encased in a flexible wrapping instead of a rigid metal casing. These advantages have made it the battery choice for portable electronic devices such as mobile phones. Suitcases Various forms of luggage have been around since the beginnings of time. The “satchee” or satchel of ancient Egyptian is one of the earliest, but pouches and messenger bags have been recorded in almost every ancient society. In the 19th century, rich people often travelled for prolonged periods with vast amounts of belongings, leading to “steamer trunks” and smaller trunks with compartments. In the 20th century, lightweight suitcases were invented and ‘Samsonite’, created by Jesse Shwayder in Colorado in 1910, (named from Samson, the biblical character), became the famous luggage icon. Wheels on the ends of cases, invented by a pilot, didn’t beome common until the 1970s.

Not Just a Facelift

any famous celebrities have regular “botox” treatment to improve their facial appearance, with newspapers and magazines delighting to show “before and after” photos. Botox injections reduce “crows feet”, wrinkles, or other signs of facial ageing. Practitioners soon started offering this treatment to both men and women at beauty centres or salons, with results depending on how skilled they were.

sufferer is defined as one who has severe symptoms for fifteen days or more every month, leading to time off work, or problems such as looking after children. In many cases medication, physical exercise, diet changes, or mild sleeping tablets may help, but in others they have little effect. Regular botox injections every three to four months, in the scalp, face, or neck muscles can result in at least a 50% improvement. Some 24 people out of 100,000 every year suffer from facial spasms or severe muscular problems that result in pain, paralysis, or eyelid problems. Many such sufferers have facial appearances that are similar to the onset of a stroke, but are permanent. This class of sufferers are often reluctant to show their faces in public, considering that they look like freaks. Susan Moraleda is one of the experts in this field and works in the University hospital La Paz in Madrid. She specializes in using the botox “A” strain if all other treatments have failed. The injections are spread out over several weeks, so that the effect of each series of injections can be seen. Follow up injections are needed, but dramatic improvements both physically and socially are achieved.

Another recognized treatment, if everything else fails, is for an overactive bladder. Again, it is women who suffer the most. A frequent desire to urinate can occur when there is as little as 100ml of urine in the bladder, as opposed to a normal 250ml. Frequent trips to the bathroom become much more difficult if such a sufferer is out of the home, on a car journey, or generally socializing. If they go to any prolonged function they usually choose aisle seats! Montserrat Espuña is a consultant in the urology department of the Clinic Hospital in Barcelona. About 25% of women over the age of seventy can be affected, but it is also a problem for some people from age twenty. The Horse & Cart Verdict

n March 21st, three Andalucía Supreme Court judges delivered their verdict as to whether the land in Carboneras where the El Algarrobico hotel was constructed, was zoned for urban development. They unanimously agreed that the land was zoned for this use.

been postponed. If the land was zoned for development the licence is obviously legal. There has never been any claim of corruption between any of the parties.

Ecologists and environmentalists were dumbfounded as they thought this was an open and shut case, one of the last before the demolition was undertaken. Owing to the complexity of the mass of paperwork and many other complicated legal judgements, the verdict had twice been delayed for fifteen days, making the ecologists a bit edgy. This verdict, not subject to any appeal, drove a horse and cart through a whole series of other previous court decision since 2006. For new readers, or others whose eyes glazed over some time ago, the developer ‘Azata del Sol’ was given a building licence by Carboneras town hall to build a luxury twenty-one storey hotel with 411 rooms just off a beach known as El Algarrobico on the outskirts of Carboneras. The hotel was incorrectly sited too near the beach, owing to a genuine mistake on coastal maps of the area in Madrid. The Junta de Andalucía had approved the construction and promised a tourist grant. When the hotel was 95% complete and interviews were being held for staff, ‘Greenpeace’ discovered the project and sailed in with their Rainbow Warrior. They painted enormous black letters from top to bottom spelling out “HOTEL ILEGAL” (with the Spanish spelling). The developers cleverly painted out the “I”, so that it then read “HOTEL LEGAL”! In 2006, an Almería judge stopped any more work. The three judges decided that a 1994 environmental plan had confused the sectors where the hotel was built, and a further environmental plan of 2008 was also very confusing and did not contradict the 1994 plan. Their judgement also went against other verdicts as late as 2012, but their decision is that the land could be built on, then and now. Another court decision as to whether Carboneras town hall were correct in giving the building licence has now

Up until March 21st, the developers had been told that the 2.3 million euros that they had paid for the land would be refunded, the land confiscated, and no compensation given for the value of the nearly completed hotel, set at 71 million euros. Now, with the new judgement, seemingly all these penalties are null and void. Azata del Sol appear to have the right to finish the hotel, or receive the compensation if it is demolished. What has really panicked the ecologists is that plans for seven more hotels, a golf course and a large number of houses on adjoining land could now go ahead as well! The Carboneras council with 35% unemployment in the area is delighted. This beach in Carboneras is now part of the Cabo de Gata National Park area, as the ecologists keep pointing out. With all due respect to the Carboneras area, if a visitor asked to be shown the best parts of the National Park, this beach may not be the first choice. Ecologists and the Junta de Andalucía environmental agency are lodging appeals in the Madrid High Court, although in theory they can’t do this. Despite the emotive “knee-jerk” cries of “foul” from the ecologists, the three judges are convinced they are correct in law.

What’s On Concerts The Big Band Clasijazz perform on May 10th at 9.30pm, at the Auditorio Municipal Maestro Padilla, Almería city. Tickets are 10 & 12 euros. The Almería City Orchestra conducted by Michael Thomas perform a homage concert to the famous Almería composer José Padilla on May 23rd at 9.30pm, Teatro Apolo, Almería city. Tickets are 12 euros. This concert marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of José Padilla. The Almería municipal band have their own homage concert to José Padilla on May 24th at 7.30pm, Auditorio Municipal Maestro Padilla. Soloists, dancers and a choir join the band. David Bisbal starts off the Spanish concerts in his current world tour by performing on June 14th at 10pm, in the Concert arena of the Mediterranean Games Stadium Almería city. “Tunas” Festival Mojácar 2014 “Tunas” Festival. The fifth World Tunas event and competition, organized by the Granada University group, takes place in Mojácar from May 16th18th. “Tunas” are groups of costumed travelling minstrels who

What’s On Zurgena and District Royal British Legion will be staging an exhibition to commemorate the start of the First World War at the Pedro Gilabert Museum in Arboleas from June 2nd-13th, as part of a worldwide recognition of the sacrifices made by ordinary people. The displays will feature details of events leading up to the start of the conflict, letters from the front line, photographs, and a selection of propaganda posters. The Golfer A guy asks an attractive woman on the golf course if she'd like to play a round with him. She wins by four strokes. Sensing the guy's embarrassment, the woman offers to take him to the parking lot and let him feel her breasts in her car. For the rest of the week, they play together every morning. She always wins and the same thing happens. On Friday, he invites her to his house for a romantic dinner. Cuddling her on the settee, the woman pulls away and says, "Stop, wait! MacGregor A tourist is backpacking through the highlands of Scotland, and he stops at a pub to get a drink. The only people in there are a bartender and an old man nursing a beer. He orders a pint, and they sit in silence for a while until the tourist asks the old man what he’s called. The old man turns to him and says, "You see this bar? But do they call me MacGregor the stone wall builder? No." Points out the window. "You see that pier on the lake out there? I built that pier with my bare hands.Drove the pilings against the tide of the sand, plank by plank. But do they call me MacGregor the pier builder? No. But you f*** one goat ....."

...and next... Advanced Pain Control A married couple went to the hospital to have their baby delivered. Upon their arrival, the doctor said he had invented a new machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labor pain to the father. He asked if they were willing to try it out, and they were both very much in favor of it. The doctor set the pain transfer to 10% for starters explaining that even 10% was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before. But as the labor progressed, the husband felt fine and asked the doctor to go head and kick it up a notch. Surprised, the doctor then adjusted the machine to 20% pain transfer. The husband was still feeling fine. The doctor checked the husband's blood pressure and was amazed at how well he was doing. At this point they decided to try for 50%. The husband continued to feel quite well. Since the pain transfer was obviously helping out the wife considerably, the husband encouraged the doctor to transfer all the pain to him. The wife delivered a healthy baby with virtually no pain. She and her husband were ecstatic. But when they got home, the mailman was lying dead on the porch.

The Library A duck goes into a library and says “Bawk" in a high pitched quack. The librarian looks down, says "Oh, you want a book?", and gives the duck a book. The duck walks out the door but is back with the book in five minutes, squeaking "Bawk, bawk." The Librarian says, "Oh, you want two books?" Five minutes later, the duck is back again, "Bawk, bawk, bawk." The Librarian follows the duck to see where it goes. It walks down to a pond, and drops the books, one at a time, in front of a big bull frog. The frog looks at the books and says in his deep bullfrog voice, "Red-it, red-it, red-it."

Husbands A woman announces to her friend that she is getting married for the fourth time. "How wonderful! But I hope you don't mind me asking what happened to your first husband?" "He ate poisonous mushrooms and died." "Oh, how tragic! What about your second husband?" "He ate poisonous mushrooms and died too." "Oh, how terrible! I'm almost afraid to ask you about your third husband." "He died of a broken neck." "A broken neck?" “Yes, he wouldn't eat the mushrooms."

The Cobbler While going through his deceased father’s things, a man finds a 25-year-old ticket for a shoe repair. Curious, he goes to the shop and hands the owner the ticket. The owner goes to the back and then 'reappears. “Good news,” he says. “They’ll be ready next Friday.” The man says, “Next Friday!!” The cobbler replies, “I never do repairs until someone asks when they will be ready!”
