The Black Economy

Old Bangers The Society of Vehicle Manufacturers, Repairers and Official scrap yards, believes that 38% of vehicles in Almería province are over ten years old. This is above the Spanish national average and is considered to be partly due to immigrants from African or other countries, on low income, buying or keeping old cars. Also of course, despite national incentive schemes to help manufacturers and sales agents, purchasers of new cars have had to think hard whether they can get together the cash, or persuade reluctant banks to lend them the money!

Shakira Concert The female Columbian singer ‘Shakira’ is performing in Almería on June 1st, one of only 4 venues in Spain. Tickets are selling well, including the “Hot Ticket Zone”, where you are expected to be able to see the sweat beads on her brow, if not in other places, at a cost of 212 euros per ticket. You can also pay this price for “Early Access Tickets”. Alternatively, the same price gives you another location, with “Golden Premium Tickets” that include a cocktail before she performs, and a personalized event programme. Other prices start at 50 euros and 72 euros. See “What’s on” section for further information.

Motorway Promise The Ministry of Transport has promised 22 million euros for the extension of the A-7 motorway from Adra in 2012. Other amounts of money are promised fOR the Almuñécar-Salobrena link, Carchuna-Castell de Ferril and Motril – Carchuna. The current Minister of Transport,

Its NOT 30, it’s still 50! In the March ‘Focus’ magazine we published an article about a suggestion that a speed limit of 30k/hr in urban areas would result in less deaths than the existing speed limit of 50 k/hr. This proposal was put forward at a conference in Córdoba concerning speed limits and safety in urban areas. Other publications have stated this is a new law. It is not, otherwise all 50k/hr speed limits would have been replaced with 30 k/hr signs! In some urban areas there are reduced limits at a bad junction, or where road works are being carried out, or at pedestrian light controlled crossings. These lower limits, where encountered, are the legal limits, but otherwise it is 50k/hr. If you try driving at 30k/hr, not only will you cause a queue, but following vehicles may well overtake dangerously! It’s still 50 k/hr, despite bar stories!

Waiting Approval Three major projects for new golf courses, hotels and housing are awaiting approval by the Junta de Andalucía, (governing body for Andalucía). The three projects are at Los Vélez, Pechina and Hoya Altica. In 2007, there were 14 golf courses planned for Almería province, but the Junta refined their criteria for planning and this reduced the number substantially. The Vélez Rubio project, to be sited in the Los Coloraos area, has the approval of the town halls, and the go-ahead from the ‘Mancommunidad’, the organization that represents various town halls. The ‘Hoya Altica’ plan is for 250 hectares near the A-344 in Toyo, Almería by the developer ‘Urbenatura’. The third project ‘Termalia Golf’

in Pechina involves a 100 million investment in a golf course, hotel and housing and a residential home for elderly persons. To obtain approval the golf projects must comply with certain conditions, one of which is the tourism that should follow.

Garrucha Port Work Approved The contract for the extension of the mooring places at Garrucha port has been awarded to ‘Sacyr’ at a cost of 5.6 million euros. The Junta de Andalucía (governing body) will provide 3 million euros. The project will increase the mooring places by 346 new ones to accommodate yachts or pleasure craft up to a length of 16 metres. The work will include a new quay and buildings on land to allow for port offices, boat repairers and port facilities, as well as parking and a new promenade.

Forthcoming Elections The municipal elections, held every four years, take place on Sunday, May 22nd, 2011. Of the 102 “pueblos”, cities, towns and villages in Almería province, 35 villages have only a choice between the PSOE (Approximately the ‘Labour’ party) and the PP (approximately the ‘Conservative’ party). Almería City has 9 parties to choose from, with the most number of candidates being in the large nearby district of Huércal de Almería

with 11 candidates. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending how you view it, Mojácar also has a list of 9 parties too, making the decision process much more difficult. Many other municipalities have fewer candidates than in 2007 and the average throughout the 102 municipalities is 3.7. The PSOE and the PP have candidates in every municipality.

Eventually! A teacher of Catholic religion in Almería, Resurrección Galera, got married in 2001 to Johannes Romes. They became famous not only in Spain but internationally, when the Catholic Archbishop of Almería decided to sack her from her post because Johannes was a divorced man from a previous marriage. Various court hearings took place. Now, ten years later the Spanish Constitucional Tribunal has annulled previous court decisions and ruled that sacking her from her post is not valid because of her personal circumstances and is against her rights. They stated that the Archdiocese did not have the right to exclude her from their list of teachers of religion in the 2001-2002 school year. Luis Guridi, Vice-president of the Spanish Association of Teachers of Religion, told the press that this victory affirmed that a person such as Resurrección Galera could not be discriminated against for her status as a Continued ....

It is expected that the Almería Catholic Archdiocese will have to pay her compensation, court costs and damages. If she wishes to become a teacher of religion in schools again, it appears they would have to re-instate her. The court ruling has been announced in the press of various countries.

Albox, Serón, Laujar de Andarax, Abrucena, María and Carboneras together with landing pads at Almería Torrecárdenas Hospital and the Poniente Hospital in El Ejido. This will bring the total to 15. The 061 Servicio Andaluz de Salud (SAS) helicopter pads are being funded by the EU as part of the emergency health plans.

Tsunami Affects Spain In 2010, 323,000 Japanese tourists came to Spain and were considered to be high spenders. Figures show they spent on average 230 euros per day compared to 89 euros by German tourists and 84 euros from UK visitors. As a result of the Tsunami it if feared that tourists to Spain, and other countries will drop off alarmingly. In Japan, 13,000 people died and 14,000 were left without homes, with an estimated damage bill of 218 million euros. So far, Japanese tourist agencies report a 30% cancellation of planned holidays. A Japanese agency states that tourists to Spain come for culture and sun, and enjoy traditional activities such as flamenco. The average profile of Japanese tourists is retired couples, who benefit from the excellent health service in Japan, and come on average for 18 days of holiday.

San Marcos Rock Festival The organizers of the 8th San Marcos Rock Festival in El Ejido pulled out of their normal venue because the El Ejido council owed them 41,000 euros. This was payment for the last three annual concerts put on at the request of the council. The organizers had asked for payment of the full amount, or 50% with a legal commitment to pay the other 50% in an agreed time schedule. The council did not come up with any money! Four pubs in El Ejido invited the organizers to perform on their premises instead, as the festival was fully organized and artistes booked. 16 groups performed on April 29th, and payment for their performances was being taken over as best they could by the four new venues.

061 Health Helicopter Pads Vera now has an 061 emergency health helicopter pad to be available to transport health emergencies to the helicopter pad at Huércal-Overa Hospital or hospitals out of the province if required. Further pads are intended for Tabernas, Ohanes, Berja and Adra and

Grand Celebration

First Almería Cruise On April 19th the cruise ship “Grand Celebration” left Almería for a cruise in the Mediterranean area finishing on Easter Sunday in Valencia. This was the first cruise to leave Almería port as a starting point and 200 people boarded the ship in Almería. The first stop was in Valencia where more tourists boarded the ship for the remaining days. The Almería port President Trinidad Cabeo was there with other city dignitaries to see the ship sail. The only snag is that passengers from Almería finished up in Valencia with no return journey back to Almería included. The luxury ship has room for 1,900 passengers and has a crew of 620. The cruise company ‘Iberocruceros’ is owned by the group ‘Costas Cruceros’ part of the ‘Carnival Corporation PLC’ company.

Adoption For Babies In Almería province during the last 4 years, 29 mothers have asked that their babies be put forward for adoption when they are born. Once the decision is announced, a procedure is started where the mother has 30 days to change her mind, and meanwhile, the baby is looked after by foster parents. The system is made easy to try and avoid mothers abandoning recently born babies in other locations. This has happened twice in the last 4 years, and one mother changed her mind during the 30 day period. The profile of mothers who put their babies up for adoption is usually a single woman between 25-35 years of age, quite often of non-Spanish

Not Spain But…. Walter Breuning died peacefully in a nursing home in the US town of Great Falls, Montaña on April 14th. He was a retired railway worker. His claim to fame was that since July 2009 he had officially been declared the oldest man known to be alive, in the world. He was born in 1896, and at the time of his death was 114. He was lucid until the end of his life, and his death was put down to natural causes! He claimed his old age was due to only eating breakfast and lunch, together with an aspirin every day.

Savings on Services Consumers of water, electricity and telephone services are making overall cuts in their use, according to recently published figures. In Almería city, during the 90s, water usage was up to 30 cubic hectometers, and then fell down to 17 cubic hectometers when customers such as rural users and churches and institutions had meters put in and paid for the first time. They cut their water usage accordingly! Now however, the consumption of water, with a higher population has fallen to 15 cubic hectometers, a record low. EndesaSevillana, our electricity supplier thinks that the amount of consumers of electricity has fallen somewhat, but less than 10%. The use of electricity has fallen 14%, but for a variety of reasons our bills still keep going up! Mobile and fixed telephone use has gone down by 12-15%, and this is partly stated to be because employers and town halls are cracking down on the use of their phones for personal calls.

Las Salinas Church Work started on the restoration of Las Salinas church in Cabo de Gata on April 18th. Workmen erected platforms to gain access to the exterior facades and lifted badly deteriorated stonework from the bell tower. This followed fairly quickly after all the publicity first proclaimed to be “satanic paintings” on the floor of the church, then attributed to “pressure” to get the work started. The company in charge of the restoration stated that the floor paintings would easily be removed because it was wood paint. They deduced this from tins of paint left in the church at the time of the painting! The work is supposed to take a total of 8 months to complete, with 3 months allocated to the restoration of the exterior. The badly marked greybrown façade will be made white, on the grounds this was the original colour, and the covering being used is highly resistant to weathering, and finally, white is the traditional colour of other Cabo de Gata properties.

Fish Sales This January 330 tonnes of fish and shellfish were exported from Almería ports, 400% more than the same month in 2010. The sales amounted to 570,000 euros. In 2010, 7 million tones of fish were caught, worth 19 million euros, and also 21.5 million euros were obtained from sales by fish farms. Italy is the main

Focus on Local News continued customer with 57% of exports going there, as well as sales to Cabo Verde and Greece, followed by Morocco and Columbia. Domestic fish sales in Almería province are also up as well. The owners of two fishing boats “El Tate” and “Bartolomé y Maria”, based in Almería have been given grants of 40% to improve or open storage buildings, equipped with electricity and disposal of sewage. These grants are part of an EU, Spanish government and Junta de Andalucía plan to modernize the fishing fleet, including the taking out of service of fishing vessels that are old, with compensation.

Judge Orders “Mandala” Shut Jesús Rivera, the Almería judge noted for various far reaching decisions, has ordered the closure of the “Mandala” disco and restaurant-bar in Almería city centre. He ruled that the establishment opened in 2008 having previously been a large café bar and became a restaurant with a first floor disco, without the necessary opening licences and without any proof that a full noise test had been done. Various neighbours challenged the legality of the establishment and stated that complaints were basically ignored, and the city council was negligent in their response. The disco-pub and restaurant is owned by ‘Sidarta Magna S.L’ who also own the Mojácar ‘Mandala Beach Club’. The judge considered that the mayor of Almería, Luis Rodríguez Cmendador, had supplied totally unsatisfactory answers when questioned in court and the council had acted in “mala fe”, literally “bad faith” or deceitfulness. The city council have started an appeal, and ‘Mandala’ is still open until the appeal is heard. Judge Rivera, in previous judgements, ordered the paralyzing of work on the ‘Algarrobico Hotel’ in Carboneras, and also ruled that it was “against the public interest” that the “Gran Plaza” shopping centre in Roquetas should be shut, although illegal in certain respects.

Thirdly, a colonoscopy examines the whole large bowel, normally recommended every 10 years. As regards diet, red meat should be avoided in excess and fatty foods, together with drinking and smoking too much. Food rich in fibre such as fruit and vegetables including Cauliflower, Brussels and Broccoli is highly recommended. If this was not enough (!) regular exercise is stressed as being beneficial. See your doctor and ask for a test if you are over 45, and particularly if there has been a history of colon cancer in the family.

Marble Concession The Junta de Andalucía and the mayor of Macael have granted a further concession for 30 years to the main marble quarries in Los Filabres. There are 31 marble quarries around Macael that make up 30% of the marble production in Spain. Most of the marble is known as “Macael White”. Although production in 2010 was less than in 2009, Pérez Navas from the Junta de Andalucía Department for Science and Innovation, considers that the industry has now turned the corner for sustained growth in 2011. Geological studies have suggested that there is enough marble for the industry for the next 100 years.

Cancer of The Colon This type of cancer is the highest cause of death following cancer, after cancer of the lungs with 16,000 deaths in Spain in 2009, and cancer of the breast in women with 6,000 in the same period. In Almería province 256 people died of cancer of the colon in 2009. Tests are highly recommended for anyone over 45. A tumour can be non-malignant for a long time, but tests show this. The first test is to see if there is blood in stools (excrement), and this is recommended every two years. The second test is an examination

Bad Landing Pilots normally breeze through customs without much trouble on landings and takeoffs. An ‘Air Nostrum’ pilot got a different reception when he landed at Almería airport recently. He was promptly arrested and charged with making false insurance claims regarding the robbery of possessions and documents on various occasions. ‘Air Nostrum’ has cut back its flights to and from Almería, and offer tickets with prices that are considered

Manifesto of the Unión Mojaquera 10

Union Mojaquera 10 has been created with a clear, agreed and concise electoral program, to rid Mojácar of the major concerns, without political side issues. 10 main proposals form the commitment that from May 22nd (Election Day) we will develop a United Mojácar for everyone. Tourism must be promoted to recover lost ground. 1. Tourism. We will form a Municipal Tourism Board to coordinate contacts with tour operators and travel agents, to become the driving force of Mojácar’s economy. The implementation of existing aesthetic regulations will restore the beauty of Mojácar. 2. Youth. We will develop a Youth Centre and provide subsidised dwellings for young people. 3. Sports. Promote and stimulate all types of sport, including a motocross circuit and a skate park. 4. Environment. Regular cleaning of all municipal streets and good street lighting. Mojácar has to be tidied up with good garden areas. A General Urban Plan is required to maximise the town’s economic activity and obtain available grants for a park, bus station, organized sightseeing and more parking. 5. Public attention. Provide bilingual staff in all municipal services and an “open door” Town Hall, with quick responses. We need our own Municipal Rates Department to revise the high values, and ensure all properties are registered. (If we all pay, we can get in more money, and lower the rates) We need a day centre for the elderly and a geriatric residential home.

6. Projects. We need a Bus Station linked to the future ‘AVE’ (high speed train) station, this side of Vera, and an agreement with other town halls for a direct service to Almería airport. Remodeling projects in the village, such as the rebuilding of the Luciana arch will be done. The ‘Plaza Nueva’ viewpoint has to be rebuilt owing to known severe structural faults underneath, and a car park opposite the “Pavana” bar is a priority. The ‘Camino de la Marinas’, (back road above the petrol station) needs improving as a provisional solution to the lack of any by-pass. 7. Health. Provide sufficient medical personnel at the Medical Centres all year round, with a Radiology service. 8. Education and Culture. Offer the Artisan Centre free of charge to non-profit organizations, and urgently establish broadband throughout the municipality with WI-FI close to a municipal building. 9. Public Safety. Provide the local police with an SMS photo inbox enabling them to respond quickly to complaints or problems. 10. Infrastructures. Demand that public administrations unblock pending infrastructures plans, including the Marina project, vital for the further economic and tourist growth of Mojácar.

Staff unions have complained that the cabin crew, (almost exclusively female), are required to wear skirts and tights, with skirts no more than 7 centimetres below the knee. A straw poll of the females employed revealed that they accepted it as part of the job.

Museum Gain The Museum Casa Ibáñez in Olula del Río that was threatened with closure is being given 134 photographs by Carlos Pérez Siguier, the famous photographer from Almería province. The photographs were collected by the Spanish Ministry of Culture when they held an exhibition of his work in 2003, when Siguier was awarded the Spanish National prize for photography. The president of the Casa Ibánez Foundation, Andrés García Ibáñez asked the Culture Ministry to send this collection to Olula del Río and this has been approved. 103 of the photographs are in black and white, relating to the “La Chanca” area of Almería city, and 31 in colour. This will bring the total of his photographs on exhibition at the Casa Ibáñez Museum to 270.

Maura Hillen and Helen Prior at the EU Petitions Committee

EU Petition AUAN (Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No) and Helen Prior appeared before the EU Petitions Committee in Brussels on April 14th. They spoke about the problems of “illegal” houses in the Almanzora valley in particular, and Helen Prior gave a moving account of their story culminating in the demolition of their house. They claimed that the action by the Junta de Andalucía (governing body for this area), and therefore Spain as a country, was an abuse against the EU charter of Fundamental Rights. Several Euro MP’s added their

voices and comments to the committee. The committee declared that there was no breach of EU laws as these problems were within the framework of Spanish laws and regulations. The Euro MP Marta Andreasen asked that EU grants to Andalucía be frozen until the problems were resolved. Margrete Auken told the committee that the British residents were being treated as “bandits” who constituted a group of illegal house owners. The Euro MP Michael Cashman who has visited Almería province three times suggested that an EU commission should ensure compensation for any property owner whose house was in threat of demolition. Maura Hillen of AUAN stated that they could not wait years for a response, as had happened on previous occasions, otherwise many of the complainants would be dead.

Why the Rush? Nurseries, art galleries, the astrophysics centre, Guardia Civil installations and doctors surgeries have been opened recently, whether actually finished or not, and some not yet available to the general public. This was because after midnight on March 28th, no such facility could be opened by the ruling mayors, or ‘Junta’ officials or County Councillors as this is considered to be a “political act” that is prohibited from March 29th until after the end of the elections on May 22nd. This is why the Garrucha nursery that will take 126 children has had the ribbon cut; but the mayor, Juan Francisco Fernández cannot open it yet until all the equipments is installed and he finds some staff. He says it will be “soon”! The new doctor’s surgery at Turre was opened on March 23rd, and the Mojácar Art gallery & Museum on March 28th at 7pm, fairly close to the deadline, although they could have opened at 11.30pm if they were quick! The “Voz de Almería” daily Spanish newspaper reported that 200 inaugurations, laying of foundation stones, visiting building works in progress, or political acts were carried out in Almería province just before the ban! These included the Mayor of Almería unveiling three sculptures in as many days, one of which was a mermaid. One of the Spanish daily newspapers gave the National prize for inventiveness (and cheek) to Calbido in the Canary Islands where a mayor “opened “a ‘Palacio Multiusos’. The building does not exist, has not been started, and no date is being talked about owing to procedural problems. A large urn was opened where inhabitants could deposit small stones, with the promise they would be incorporated into the future foundation stone sometime!

So Now You Know... The iPod Tony Farrel was an independent American engineer who wanted to take an MP3 player, build a Napster music sales service alongside it and form a company to market it. Apple heard of this and persuaded Farrell to join them in 2001. They assigned him a team of 30 people including designers, computer programmers and hardware engineers. They perfected the idea and included video facility that Farrell hadn’t thought of. They patented the finished product as a “portable device for downloading audio and video from the Internet” The name chosen was “Internet Pod” which their marketing dept changed to “iPod”, and “iTunes”. Ice Cream Cones Ernest A Mamwi was Syrian by nationality but emigrated to the US. In 1904, he had a waffle stall at the St Louis World fair, next to an ice cream seller. One hot day the ice cream seller ran out of the dishes in which he served ice cream. Hamwi noticed his predicament and rolled a waffle to contain the ice cream, rolling it into a cone. This was a success and for the rest of the day he rolled waffles for the ice cream seller who decided it was a brilliant idea. The two joined forces for the rest of the fair by which time the public liked the idea too, as they could wander off with the cone. The wafer cone was patented by Hamwi in 1920. Floating Soap Proctor and Gamble developed a formula for white soap, almost 100% pure at an affordable price. They called it simply “White Soap”, and went into production in 1878. Months later a workman went to lunch and forgot to turn off the machine that was making a large batch. When he came back after lunch he found that air had gone into the soap, but he decided it did not matter and poured the soap into the molds and it was then packed and shipped. A few weeks later customers wrote in or told their salesmen that they wanted more of the soap that floated! The error became a selling point and Harvey Proctor called the soap “Ivory”.

Mr. Potato Head In the World War II era, George Lerner was a successful inventor living in the US. In 1949 he designed the first generation of plastic face pieces, with the intention of pushing them into fruit or vegetables. It was just after the war so Americans thought it was a waste of food and it did not take off. He sold his idea to a cereal company as toys to be put in cereal packets. He still thought his idea was good and met a manufacturer who agreed, and they bought back the rights. In 1952, Hasbro Inc. became the first company to advertise a toy on US television. Parents had to provide the potatoes until a plastic potato was invented. . Paper Milk Containers John Van Wormer owned a toy factory in Toledo, Ohio. One morning he dropped his bottle of milk, resulting in glass and milk everywhere. He thought about this and decided that a paper milk carton was the alternative. He worked on his idea and patented it in 1915. It took him 10 years to perfect a machine capable of making the containers and he went into production. He found that Americans preferred their milk in bottles. But time, and the steady increase in the cost of glass worked in his favour, and other companies started making their own cartons under licence. By 1950, 35 years later, he was producing 20 million cartons a day. TV Remote Controls In 1950, the Zenith Electronics Corp. designed a device called “Lazy Bones” to operate a TV with a cable from the device. It was a little dangerous and one of their engineers Dr. Robert Adler suggested that ultrasonic technology was the answer. “Ultrasonic sound” is sound beyond the range of the human ear. By 1956 his team had solved the design problems and the Austrian, Robert Adler was given the credit. His invention was called the “Adler remote” and in the following years over 9 million remotes were made and sold, until “infrared” took over, which was kinder to pets like dogs, who sometimes barked at the ultrasonic remotes.

hilst residents of Almería, whether Spanish Nationals or other nationalities, are having to experience the economic squeeze, now is the time to buy property, according to a recent survey. The latest figures show that in Almería province there are 22,500 new properties waiting for a buyer that either belong to the developer, or the banks. This makes Almeria third in Spain as regards the number of vacant properties, after Castellón and Toledo. Partly because of the large stock of properties, if you can afford to buy, then the cost of a mortgage is the lowest in Spain.

compared to other provinces. Paradoxically this is a lot to do with the lack of new construction projects, reflected in the number of new properties for sale. Almería province is still growing very fast regarding the population, having gone up by 34% during the period 2000-2010, whereas the national average is 14%. Another recent survey has shown that the biggest worry for inhabitants of Almería province is unemployment, followed by a criticism of the infrastructure. When the “AVE” (high speed train) is in operation, this not only makes Almería province vastly more accessible to people from Madrid or Barcelona who are property owners, but it also opens up a whole new influx of tourists.

A family in Almería province has to set aside 27% of their income, compared to 42% for a family living in Granada province, or 65% (the highest in Spain) for a family in Barcelona. The national average of the amount of income needed to buy a property in Spain is 39%, 11% more than here. Promoters and developers, including some property companies directly operated by banks, have been offering special deals designed to tempt the Spanish visitors over Easter, or visitors of any nationality. These include special open days, or weekends on some developments, with 0% deposit, 0% community charges, 0% charges for the ‘Escritura’ (title deeds) and 0% removal charges! If you are the right age, you can get 100% guaranteed mortgages, with 40 year terms, and an unemployment mortgage protection scheme, free for the first 5 years. They really need to sell properties, although they haven’t quite got round to offering two for the price of one! These schemes are designed to attract Spanish Nationals buying their first or second home in Almería, or for new purchasers from other countries, who may be wanting a home in Spain, and may feel this is a good time to buy.

When the Málaga-Córdoba-Barcelona AVE line was opened, hotels were immediately seeing more business travel, and demand for conference space, as well as tourists. Hopefully this will be the same for Almería province. Almería city recently received the sum of 6 million euros from the developer ‘Bogaris’ who are to build a very large 55 million euros commercial centre on 100,000 square metres of land beside Torrecárdenas hospital. The 6 million euros is a fee of 15% of the 25,000 square metres of city land that they sold to ‘Bogaris’, independently valued at 252 euros per square metre. Blow by Blow

T

his January, ‘ETA’, the Basque terrorist organization announced a cease fire in a video released to the international media. This was immediately rejected by the Spanish government, with both Prime Minister José Zapatero and his Deputy, Pérez Rubalcaba, stating that it was just a political ploy and not a serious intention. Rubalcaba, when he was made Minister of the Interior, vowed to wage war against ‘ETA’, knowing that the 2006 “ceasefire” was really a breathing spell for the group to reorganize before breaking it in 2007. He and Spanish police believed that the 2011 ceasefire was another such regrouping. They knew they had to press on hard with their intelligence gathering and investigations, along with their close colleagues (by now) in France, Portugal and Belgium.

Within hours of the January “ceasefire”, the Spanish police arrested Iraitz Gesala, the acknowledged “brain” of the ‘ETA’ computer and information department, together with hard drives and memory sticks. The extremely sophisticated computer encryption had to be sent to the Spanish equivalent of the “CIA”, in Madrid, to be decoded. In February, French antiterrorist police arrested another key member who had escaped after being arrested the year before, followed quickly by the Spanish police arresting three members of the cell group “Otazau”, who were considered the most active group. They were linked to seventeen attacks including two deaths, one of them a Spanish police Inspector.

On April 12th, Spanish anti-terrorist police swooped on the rural hamlet of Legorreta, near Guipúzcoa in northern Spain. Two brothers were arrested at 3am, followed by an intensive search of their farm buildings where they kept goats and sheep and produced cheese. Initial press reports stated that nearly 900 kilos of explosive materials had been found, making it the second largest discovery of this quantity of explosives in mainland Spain. After more comprehensive searches, and more arrests the amount of explosives discovered at Legorreta and nearby, was amended to 1,600 kilos, slightly more than the 1,500 kilos seized in Portugal in February 2010. The ‘ETA’ storage depot found at Legorreta was a central distribution point for explosives, equipment and command decisions, to ‘ETA’ groups whose actual identities was kept secret.

On March 10th, another four senior ‘ETA’ activists were arrested on the French-Belgium border. It was considered they were meeting to try and re-group after the discovery of large quantities of explosives, false number plates and arms in various hide-outs in Northern France. The French police had redoubled their co-operation after the assassination of a Spanish The storage place at Legorreta plain clothes policeman, working with a French colleague, when they unluckily, and unexpectedly, entered a French café where an ‘ETA’ couple were having coffee. They further re-doubled their efforts when the first French gendarme was killed by an ‘ETA’ gang. A French road block on March 21st discovered an ‘ETA’ courier with 54,000 euros, followed by the detaining of two more senior ‘ETA’ activists in April, after a 17 hour chase and search in which shots were fired on two occasions, resulting in another French gendarme being wounded. French and Spanish antiterrorist police believe that the number of really

active ‘ETA’ terrorists is now, (if they are right), less than forty, with perhaps a hundred others. The April 12th arrests and discovery of such a large quantity of explosive materials followed scraps of information slowly collected for years. In 2002, a senior ‘ETA’ member had noted in his diary a meeting scheduled with a cell called “Erreka”. Arrests in 2007 gave further mention of this group and linked them to the importation of two missiles to shoot down a plane in 2001 that the then Spanish Prime Minister José Aznar was using for electioneering. Last year, three lawyers were arrested, accused of acting as couriers for ‘ETA’ prisoners, and the searches of their offices revealed a set of initials, again linked to the ‘Erreka’ group. The noose was slowly tightened, then 200 police, explosives experts and computer specialists raided the rural farmhouse in Legorreta. ‘Erreka’ had been broken, and the biggest Spanish anti-terrorist search became a success story, although one activist escaped.

osmetic plastic surgery may well be considered to many of our readers as something associated with ageing film stars such as the late Elizabeth Taylor, the author Barbara Cartland, TV presenters, or more recently Richard Harris from “Top Gear” who photographers suddenly noticed looked much less wrinkly, (perhaps just Botox), but his agent quickly said it was just the lighting.

In the cases that surgery is necessary, breast reconstruction is part of the service if required, at no charge. 31% of women who have cosmetic plastic surgery are asking for private breast enlargement or amendments, at a cost that is about 4,000 - 5,000 euros. The highest percentage of operations on women, some 41%, is for facial cosmetic surgery, for perceived defects in eyelids or bags, at an average cost of 2,000 euros. The remaining surgical procedures are for liposuction costing anything from 2,500-4,000 euros, with 8% asking for muscle or ankle treatment.

So men, if they are quietly laughing at the vanity of women who pay large sums for cosmetic surgery, themselves make up the other 12%. 57% of men who go for cosmetic surgery do so to alter facial ageing. Reduction of body fat is another important sector, with some men wanting also to increase the size of their chest. 15% of men think they will feel better following surgery, but 30% think it will make them more “functional” (?). 20% admit that they want a change in their appearance, and 10% say they are pressurized by “others”, the assumption being that it is women who pressurize them!

A survey of the reasons put forward resulted in 35% of women stating that it made them feel better, 28% opting for changes in some physical aspect they did not like, whilst 11% considered it made them more attractive, particularly as viewed by men. José Córdoba Campo, a plastic surgeon with thirty years’ experience, thinks that TV and media adverts are putting heavy pressure,

What’s On Concerts The 7th Pulpop Music Festival takes place in Roquetas bull ring on Saturday July 9th. The lineup includes the group ‘Sexy Sadie, Brighton 64’ and the Almerian group ‘Proyecto Solaz’. ‘Doble Sentido’, a young Almería group perform their new disc “Reflejo” on May 13th at the Teatro Apolo in Almería city. The Pasíon Vega concert scheduled for the Teatro Auditorio de Roquetas on May 14th has been postponed owing to the death of her mother. The concert will now take place on October 1st. Existing ticket holders can keep their tickets for the October 1st concert, or claim a refund if they wish. El Ejido Festival Carlos Latre the Spanish comedian performs his show “Yes, we Spain” on May 27th at 10pm in the El Ejido Auditorio. A night of music, dance and theatre takes place on May 28th from 10pm-8am at the Guardias Vieja Castle. ‘Kaleido’ present their show “Escopolis” on June 3rd at 10pm at the El Ejido Auditorio. The Museo Taurino at Roquetas has an exhibition of more than 50 painting or other art forms, organized by ‘The Peña Taurina Roquetas de Mar’ relating to bull fighting. Items include “Picador en el portón de la salida” a lithograph by Pablo Picasso. All works come from the private collection of the Sena Ruiz family, and the exhibition is open until the end of June. Opening houses are mornings and evenings from Tuesday to Saturday and mornings on Sundays and Fiesta Days.

What’s On Carmen Pinteño has an exhibition of her work entitled “Misterios” until May 28th at the Centro de Unicaja de Cultura centre, Paseo 11, Almería City. The exhibition is open from 6pm-9pm on Monday to Fridays, and 11am-2pm on Saturdays. Cornelis Zitman, the sculptor, has an exhibition of his work entitled “Zitman en España” (Zitman in Spain) until May 28th, at the Almería Archaeological Museum, Almería City. More than 50 of his sculptures have been collected from museums world wide, and are touring Spain. It is hoped that Cornelis Zitman, who is 85, will visit Almería in May for the close of the exhibition. The entrance to this exhibition is in Calle Hermanos Pinzón, and is open Tues, 2.308.30pm, Wed – Sat, 9am-8.30 pm and Sun, 9am-2.30pm (Closed May 1st, National Fiesta day).

What’s On PAWS – still under threat but more optimistic about survival. PAWS, the beleaguered animal rescue charity, looks set to continue – at least for the time being. It had announced mid-March that it would have to close for lack of money, but reversed the decision four weeks later. A ‘Save PAWS’ campaign, started in the immediate wake of the announcement, raised €10.000 in donations and pledges. It revealed a real concern among the population in Mojacar and surrounding area for an organisation that is very wellknown but often taken for granted. But a statement announcing the change of heart warned

that PAWS is definitely not out of the woods yet. “We are spending at least 7.000 euros a month to look after all the animals we still have in our care,” said treasurer Janet Franklin. “We urgently need to find some continuing source of funds to replace the major donor we lost earlier this year” said Mrs. Franklin.” The local fund-raising push is not over yet. At least a dozen more events are in the pipeline between now and World Animal Awareness Day in October – and more may well be added to the list. A multiple Sky Dive (organised by Sol Times), a repeat of Spectrum FM’s highly successful Gig-a-Crawl and a concert featured possibly a major UK headline act are just

three which catch the eye. Above all PAWS wants more people to actually join the society. “We clearly have many hundreds of strong supporters in the area, said PAWS s p o ke s m a n M i ke Dornan, “yet our membership remains relatively small. If we can enlarge our declared support base it will give us more clout in approaching charitable trusts and local town halls to get support from them.” But for the foreseeable future emergency restrictions will remain in place, with no new animals taken into the rescue shelter. A nerd was walking on campus one day when his friend, another nerd, rode up on an incredible shiny new bicycle. The first nerd was stunned and asked, "Where did you get such a nice bike?" Nothing’s Safe A man is driving along the highway in his van when he suddenly hears a "tttttttttssssss!" sound. He pulls over and gets out of his van to see what the sound was. He sees his tyre is flat so he gets the jack and starts winding it up when a man comes from nowhere and smashes his window and steals his radio. The man with the burst tyre shouts, "WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?" The other man replies, "Well if you’re having the tyres, I'm having the radio".

'Yes I am,' replies the drunk, so the Bishop grabs him and dunks him in the river. He pulls him up and asks the drunk, ‘Brother have you found Jesus?' The drunk replies, 'No, I haven't.' The Bishop, shocked with the answer, dunks him into the water again, but for a bit longer this time. He pulls him out of the water and asks again, 'Have you found Jesus, my brother?' The drunk again answers, 'No, I have not found Jesus.' By this time the Bishop is worried and so he dunks the drunk in the water again, but this time he holds him down for about 30 seconds.

Friends The sailor came home from a secret two year mission only to find his wife with a new born baby. Furious, he was determined to track down the father to extract revenge. "Was it my friend Sam", he demanded. "No !" his weeping wife replied. "Was it my friend Jim then?" he asked. "NO !!!" she said even more upset. "Well which one of my no good friends did this then?" he asked. "Don't you think I have any friends of my own?" she snapped.

When the drunk begins kicking his arms and legs struggling for breath, the Bishop pulls him up. The Bishop asks the drunk again, 'For the love of God, have you found Jesus?' The drunk wipes his eyes and catches his breath and says to the Bishop 'Are you sure this is where JESUS fell in?'

...and next... Everybody Happy It is August in a small town on the South Coast of France, holiday season is in full swing, but it is raining so there is not too much business happening. Everyone is heavily in debt. Luckily, a rich Russian tourist arrives in the foyer of the small local hotel. He asks for a room and puts a 100 euro note on the reception counter, takes a key and goes to inspect the room located up the stairs on the third floor. The hotel owner takes the banknote in hurry and rushes to his meat supplier to whom he owes 100 euros.

The Customer A man walks into a pharmacy, buys a condom, then walks out of the store laughing hysterically. The pharmacist thinks this is weird, but, hey, there's no law preventing weird people from buying condoms. Maybe it's a good thing. The next day, the man comes back to the store, purchases another condom, and once again he leaves the store laughing wildly. This piques the interest of the pharmacist. What's so funny about buying a rubber, anyway? So he tells his assistant, "If this guy ever comes back, I want you to follow him to see where he goes." Sure enough, the next day the laugher is back. He buys the condom, starts cracking up, then leaves. The pharmacist tells his clerk to go follow the man. About an hour later, the assistant comes back to the store. "Did you follow him? Where did he go?" asks the pharmacist. The assistant replies "Your house."

The butcher takes the money and races to his wholesale supplier to pay his debt. The wholesaler rushes to the farmer to pay 100 euros for pigs he purchased some time ago. The farmer triumphantly gives the 100 euro note to a local prostitute who gave him her services on credit. The prostitute goes quickly to the hotel, as she owed the hotel for her hourly room use to entertain clients, and lays the 100 euros on the counter. At that moment, the rich Russian is coming down to reception and informs the hotel owner that the proposed room is unsatisfactory and takes his 100 euros back and departs. There was no profit or income. But everyone no longer has any debt and the small town people look optimistically towards their future.
