Next is Easter!

ow that the chilly but dry Carnival events are all over, we are in “Lent”, the run up to Easter. The events of Easter are considered the most important in the religious calendar and are marked by the very elaborate and striking Easter processions. The timetable and routes for the 20 religious brotherhoods that solemnly process through the centre of Almería city throughout Easter week are currently being fixed. As with all outdoor events, the weather is an unknown factor and in previous years bad weather has resulted in either curtailment or cancellation of some of the processions. This year, Easter Sunday is earlier than 2011 and is on April 8th. Good Friday and the day before, Maundy Thursday in the UK, are “red” fiesta days throughout Andalucía. All banks, official offices and many businesses will be closed on these dates of April 5th and 6th. Thursday, March 15th is this year’s date for the very local and quaint fiesta, “Día de la Vieja” (Old lady Day) and many local businesses in the Cuevas, Turre, Garrucha and Mojácar areas will be shut, at least during the afternoon. One theory is that this fiesta day originated with grandparents taking their grandchildren into the countryside for a picnic to relieve the austerity of Lent. Families head for either coastal or wooded locations with the effigies of the “old lady” and children throw stones or beat the head with sticks to release sweets and goodies.

Cortijo Grande is a favourite spot, but you have to get there early if you want to stake your claim to a space. The following weekend has St. Patrick’s Day on the Saturday, and UK Mothering Sunday on the 18th. Monday, March 19th is “Día de San José” (Spanish Fathers Day) and is a major fiesta day in many parts of Spain but not in Andalucía because Maundy Thursday is a fiesta day instead. It is hoped that Spanish tourists will come to this area for a long weekend. The arrival of budget flights from Barcelona to Almería by the Spanish airline ‘Vueling’ is regarded as a major step forward, particularly as Vueling operate budget flights into Barcelona from many major cities world wide. ‘ Natalia Tours’ a Russian travel company has announced flights to Almería from Russia, and the Almería tourist board have subsidized packages from the UK involving ‘Thomas Cook’, with 10,000 passengers predicted to fly into Almería airport in 2012 for destinations in either Roquetas or Mojácar. If all these expectations come to fruition, perhaps tourist numbers will dramatically increase in 2012. Sunday, March 25th is election day in Andalucía to determine who will be in charge of Andalucía for the next four years. Only Spanish nationals can vote in theses “Junta de Andalucía” elections and the PP (roughly Conservative party) has high hopes of winning control, following their major success in the local and national elections. Whichever party obtains the mandate, one of the priorities will be a decision regarding the 900 “illegal” (at present) properties mostly in the Almanzora valley. A decision may even be made regarding the future of “El Algarrobico” hotel at Carboneras, perhaps! As we go to press, major Spanish unions are calling for a General Strike on Wednesday, March 29th, in protest over the Spanish government austerity measures. This will be balloted on March 9th, and what effect, or the extent of the strike is not yet known. If it takes place it may well affect major public transport on that day and also flights.

Focus on Local News Palomares Promise Last year the mayor of Cuevas del Almanzora, Jésus Caicedo, hosted a visit to Palomares by US Senators from an environmental committee. They came to inspect the 42 hectares of land still contaminated by an estimated 6,000 cubic metres of radioactive soil, there since 1966 when two US planes collided over Palomares. On February 3rd, US Senators and the US Ambassador to Spain met in Madrid with the new ‘PP’ leader, Mariano Rajoy, and the Minister of the Exterior, José Manuel García-Margallo. A rapid clean up of the contaminated area was promised. On March 4th, José Manuel met with Hilary Clinton in Munich and she gave her personal promise that the removal of the soil would be done whilst Barack Obama was President. Some horse trading took place with José Manuel promising that the proposed missile site at the large US base at Rota in Spain would be approved and that Spain would not unilaterally decrease Spanish troops in Afghanistan, Libya or Somalia. The mayor of Cuevas is waiting for a concrete plan and timescale. The US State department then issued a brief statement saying that no “official” agreement had been reached and negotiations were continuing.

José pointed out that Spain already matched the 2020 targets for renewable energy set by the EU, and reducing the cost of electricity and bills was his prime concern. He has also sent a letter to the National Energy Commission (CNE) asking for a detailed breakdown of the “deficit” claims for 2011.

Golf Forum Natalia Díaz, the Almería tourism delegate, met with golf course representatives in February to talk about promoting the image of Almería as an ideal venue for golf. Representatives of Aguilón Golf (Pulpí), Alborán Golf (Almería), Desert Springs (Cuevas del Almanzora), Valle del Este (Vera), Playa Macenas Golf & Marina Golf (Mojácar), Cortijo Grande (Turre), La Envia Golf (Vicar), Playa Serena Golf (Roquetas) and Golf Almerimar (El Ejido) attended the meeting. It was agreed that one of the main problems was the infrastructure needed and it is hoped that the new ‘Vueling’ flights will help in this respect. Natalia Díaz stated that a concerted plan was needed to present to tour operators both nationally and internationally, that highlighted the distinct golf offers.

Horse shampoo on the shelf at Mercadona

Horse Shampoo Purchasers of horse shampoo containing “Biotina” are being warned that the product is intended only for horses. In the past few months, more and more people have been buying the product from vets, chemists and supermarkets (including Mercadona) at prices from 8-12 euros. The ingredient “Biotina” is intended to eliminate grease from horse hair and stop hair loss, but the demand in sales is because consumers now think it gives human hair a real shine. The manufacturers faced with soaring sales are reputed to have changed the formula slightly, but still state it is really intended for horses!

New Electricity Decree As part of the endeavours to reduce the cost of Impounded Cars electricity bills, a halt for 2012 on new renewable El Ejido town hall has swapped 13 cars that were energy project grants has been announced. This was formerly leased for others in their municipal pound.

Focus on Local News continued The cars now used were either reported abandoned or were impounded when their owners refused to pay fines for traffic infractions. José Francisco Rivera from El Ejido council states that for every car not leased anymore there is a saving of 400 euros per month. The maintenance cost of the vehicles now used is only 17 euros per month. He considers that a total saving of 150,000 euros per year is possible. The reclaimed vehicles are used for a variety of council activities.

Nearly! Carme Chacón, the former Minster of Defence from Olula del Rio in Almería province, only narrowly failed to obtain the nomination as head of the ‘PSOE’ opposition government. Voting took place at Seville on Saturday, February 4th and after an impassioned speech she lost by 22 votes out of 952 votes cast. The result was delayed for 2 hours whilst two recounts took place. Dressed in a red jacket and skirt (PSOE colours) her presentation was described as being equal in standing to speeches made by the former Prime Minister José Zapatero before the 2004 General Elections. One political commentator described her as “Zapatero in a skirt”. Alfredo Rubalcaba , the “ elder statesman”, was elected as the ‘PSOE’ leader by the 22 vote majority. This is the first leadership election with Carme as a contender as in April last year she was forced to withdraw by José Zapatero, who wanted Rubalcaba to lead the party into the 2011 General Elections. It is aniticipated that she will stand again in future leadership elections.

Caught Out! The traffic councillor from Huércal de Almería resigned from his position after he was positively breathalyzed during a 5am routine alcohol check. Adolfo Martín Rodríguez was found to be just over twice the legal limit with a roadside level of 66 mg/ltr. He received a fine, lost his licence for 8 months and was given a second fine for being rude to the police. In another incident, police managed eventually to stop a 53yr old driver of a 38 tonne articulated lorry that was weaving erratically on the A-7 motorway near Vicar. The lorry driver tested positive with 104mg/ltr of alcohol. This was seven times the legal limit for professional drivers. An examination of his

Members of Almería Under 23 cycle team

Cycle Team Boost The Cajamar Bank and ‘Cosentino’, the marble and stone company in Cantoria, have become joint sponsors of the “Under 23” Almería city cycle team. It is intended that the 18 man team participate in the “Copa de España” event that is held between 19 teams. In previous years, this team was placed 4th in the national ranking and one of the team, José Cobo, was placed 6th in the individual rankings. The team has been chosen from cyclists who have mostly started in the Almería municipal cycling club. Recently, a 1,400m cycle track was opened on the ‘recinto ferial’ site and is available for public use, 11 months of the year, apart from August when the ‘feria’ takes place.

Record Tomato Sales The Almería tomato co-operative ‘CASI’ broke all records when they sold 2.5 million kilos of tomatoes at their auction on Saturday, February 25th. 1,800 growers sell their tomato products through this cooperative from 2,000 hectares of tomato production. The average price obtained was 76 céntimos a kilo, including the sales of ‘Raf Pata Negra’ for more then 3 euros a kilo. 50% of the sales were to Spanish buyers and the remainder to buyers in France, Poland, Holland, Belgium, Germany and the UK. The cooperative pursues an aggressive marketing campaign including ‘facebook’ and ‘twitter’.

Focus on Local News continued From Russia With Money The Russian tour operator, ‘Natalie Tours’, has announced that they intend to start a direct flight from Russia to Almería airport every 10 days. The flights used will have a capacity of 220 passengers. In 2011, 36% more Russian tourists visited Spain than in 2010. Russians are stated to be interested in culture and historic monuments as much as the sun and beach. The average stay in 2011 was 10 days with a daily expenditure of 120 euros, some 23 euros higher than the average.

More Buses Representatives of the Levante and Mancommunidad areas met recently in Huércal-Overa to discuss more bus routes. One of the proposals is that a bus route is started from towns in the Levante area to HuércalOvera to give better access to the hospital, tax, social security and the unemployment offices. Another proposal was a coastal bus from Mojácar to San Juan de los Terreros to cater for both local and tourist passengers. The final suggestion was for an examination to see if a bus route from Pulpí to Huércal-Overa was viable. Another meeting will be held on March 14th to take these proposals forward. Gold Buying Scam Police in Almería have arrested a 28 year old man, the owner of a “Gold Buying” shop in Vicar. The allegation is that his staff, on his instructions, paid clients for a weight that was inferior to the actual weight. Clients had to sign a blank receipt for the gold items being sold, and the real weight was hidden from them whilst they were in his shop. “Gold buying” establishments are required by law to issue receipts and enter items bought on a register. Police allege he may have defrauded customers of as much as 100,000 euros.

Earth Tremor Adra and El Ejido experienced an earth tremor on February 15th. Scientists stated that the epicentre was off the Almería coast in the sea area known as “El Mar de Alborán” and measured 3 on the Richter scale and was 5 kilometres under the sea. A later aftershock measured 1.7, but was 29 kilometres under the sea. This area of sea is renowned for such events, and Adra has a building code that takes into account earth tremors.

Health Savings The Junta de Andalucía health budget is 9,393 million euros for 2012. 84% of prescriptions are now for the principal active ingredient which saved 119 million euros in 2011. In Almería province, 90% of prescriptions comply with the new guidelines. A central buying service for hospitals and health centre medical requirements in Almería saved 11 million euros in 2011. “Electronic” prescriptions at “farmacias”, from a computer system called “Diraya” has made further savings of 494 million euros. Las Salinas Church The famous “Las Salinas” church at Cabo de Gata has a new spire and restored bell chamber. Workmen have started dismantling the outside scaffolding that has been in place since last March. Adelaida was born in Adra on February 2nd 1905! This year she celebrated her 107th birthday. She has been a resident of a residential home in Vicar since 2008, is not incapacitated and can recount many stories regarding her life spent working on the land and looking after her brothers. The Vera-Cartagena Toll Road The consortium of developers who built the “ghost” toll road in 2004, recently met with the 30 banks that lent them the 600 million euros to try to restructure the debt. 500 million is still owing. The Spanish Ministry of Transport had predicted 7,000 vehicles per day rising to 30,000 in 2020. Unfortunately the annual average daily total has never been over 3,000 and the highest total was in August of 2007 with 5,300 vehicles a day. In 2011, the figure dropped to 2,000 vehicles a day. The Spanish government gave the developers 80 million euros in 2011 to help with the losses and made 250 million euros available as loans, to help with bank repayments. ‘Aucosta’, the consortium of developers, “bought” the concession for 36 years, and financed the project. It is the second least used toll road in Spain, only just better then the Madrid-Toledo toll road that has proved a disaster.

Mojácar Bowling Green The mayoress of Mojácar has received the green light from the Almería ‘Diputación’ (County Council) for a projected artificial surface bowling green on land owned by the municipality near Marina de la Torre. The site will have to be drained and a polypropylene carpet laid. Another fire resistant layer would make up the bowling surface. The cost is

Antas Bronze Age Site Famous archaeologists from Barcelona, led by Montserrat Menasanch, recently visited Antas to help add their voices to the request by the mayoress for a visitors centre. Montserrat believes that the Antas Bronze Age site, known as “El Argar” is one of the finest in Spain, and even in Europe. The archaeologists consider that almost every age in history can be traced on various parts of the extensive area and it is of the “highest importance”. Antas has been campaigning for some time for a centre open to visitors and archaeologists.

‘AVE’ Container link The mayors of Pulpí, Cuevas del Almanzora and Aguilas are to meet with representatives of the Spanish Ministry of Transport in early March. They are asking that the proposed Murcia to Almería ‘AVE’ line (High Speed train) allows for a container link in their area. Large quantities of tomatoes, peppers and melons are grown here, and 70% of the lettuce transported to Northern Europe originates from the Pulpí region. There is still a rail link with Aguilas that is recognized as being of major importance for the carriage of goods, all that is left from the famous Aguilas to Almendricos line. Continued ....

Focus on Local News continued Nearly 100,000 According to the Spanish Institute of Statistics, Roquetas has a population of 91,795 as of last January 1st. This is an increase of 20,000 people in the last 5 years. 107 nationalities make up 30,557 non-Spanish residents of which 38% are Rumanian, 15% from Morocco and 4% from Russia. Apart from Almería capital, this is the highest number of residents in the province. There are 5,000 more men than women.

Germany & Italian Sales Despite the unjust cucumber problems last year, Germany is the main country of exports in Almería province, regarding oranges and lemons. In 2011, they bought 5.7 million euros worth of oranges and lemons, some 35% of the production from growers in Almería province. 54 growers sold 24 million kilos abroad in 2011, 6% up on 2010, with a total value of 16 million euros. Italy and France take large quantities as well, with a small market share going to the UK. Exported production of olive oil from Almería province went up 272% in January to October of 2011. Italy took 60% of the exports totalling 1.3 million euros, along with the US, Mexico, United Emirates and Japan.

Vehicle Safety Despite the many campaigns, vehicle drivers in Almería province are still quite lax regarding the wearing of seat belts, or child safety equipment. 48,860 points have been lost because of this by vehicle drivers since July 2006. Another 45,474 points have been lost because of “drink-driving” tests.17,574 points have been lost from excessive speed. Campaigns in the province planned for March are to stop driver distractions such as using a mobile ‘phone, or re-setting GPS devices whilst driving.

“Mojácar Spring Break Festival” The mayoress of Mojácar is not pleased that the Mojácar ‘Pueblo Indalo’ has joined forces with a travel agency and a festival organizer to promote a “Spring Break Festival” from April 11th -15th, just after Easter. The aim is to get at least 1,500 young people to Mojácar for a “sun, beach, drinks and Dj festival” with free first entrance or drinks at the subscribing

Tabernas New Hybrid Plant The company ‘AORA Solar’ have completed the building of the first hybrid power generator at Tabernas at the solar complex. A 38 metre tower captures the sun from 52 tracking mirrors and the air is allowed to reach 1,000 degrees before it operates a turbine to provide electrical power. At night time or periods with no sun, the turbine can be driven by gas or biomass energy. This is the first such hybrid plant in Europe that is designed to operate 24 hrs a day. ‘AORA’ has constructed another plant in Israel that has been working since 2009. Zev Rosenzweig from ‘AORA’ stated that they were delighted that the second plant was in operation and Tabernas was the ideal site to refine the technology involved.

So Now You Know... Mad as a Hatter The â€œMad Hatterâ€? in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and the phrase "mad as a hatter" are both based on a tragic episode in manufacturing history. Hat makers used various chemicals in their work, among them mercury for curing felt. Mercury is a deadly poison, and the thousands of workers who handled this noxious substance developed pathological symptoms including kidney damage, anaemia, inflammation of the gums, as well as insanity known today as "hatter's syndrome." It is estimated that at one time more than 10 percent of all the workers in hat factories ended their lives insane. False Eyelashes The American film director, D.W. Griffith, first used fake eyelashes when he was making his 1916 epic, "Intolerance". Griffith wanted actress Seena Owen to have lashes that brushed her cheeks, and make her eyes shine through them larger than life. A wigmaker wove human hair through fine gauze which was then glued to Seenaâ€™s eyelids. "Intolerance" was critically acclaimed as a cinema masterpiece but flopped financially leaving Griffith with huge debts. Fake eyelashes went on to be a beauty sensation that has resulted in huge sales for the manufacturers.

The Tallest Man The tallest man ever known was an American named Robert Wadlow . Born in Alton, Illinois, in 1918, Wadlow was 6 feet tall by the time he was eight years old, and at fifteen he was 7 feet 5 inches. He reached a final height of 8 feet 11 inches (and a weight of 491 pounds) on his twenty first birthday. He died the following year of an inflamed leg (caused by improperly fitted leg braces) and was buried in a coffin that measured slightly under 11 feet in length. Robert Wadlow, as well as other "giants" have a pituitary gland tumor that excretes large amounts of growth hormone, described as acromegalic gigantism.

The Cotton Gin Eli Whitney was a graduate from Yale University who headed to Georgia to make his fortune. By April, 1793, Whitney had invented the cotton gin. This was a mechanical device with a handle which removes the seeds, seed hulls, and other small objects from the fibers of cotton, a process which until that time had been very labour-intensive. After the invention of the cotton gin, the yield of raw cotton doubled each decade after 1800. Demand was fuelled by other inventions of the Industrial Revolution, such as the machines to spin and weave it and the steamboat to transport it to England where it was made into cloth. The First Reaping Machine The reaper was a horse drawn farm implement invented by Cyrus Hall McCormick in 1831 to cut small grain crops. This replaced the manual cutting of the crop with scythes and sickles. Developed to cut down wheat more quickly and efficiently, it was patented by Cyrus in 1834. The mechanisation of this first reaper led eventually to the combine harvester that not only cut the cereal products, but then bound them into sheaves or then bales. The cost of purchasing a machine led to farmers clubbing together to buy one between them. Cutting round the outsides of a large field, and working in to the middle, became the norm. Ball Lightning At 6:30 p.m.. on Oct 8, 1919, in the busy town of Salina, Kansas, a "ball of fireâ€? struck the side of a building, ripped out bricks, and demolished a window. It then exploded with a "bang resembling the noise made by the discharge of a large pistol, filling the air with balls of fire as large as baseballs, which floated away in all directions," according to a Monthly Weather Review correspondent, "Some of these balls followed trolley and electric-light wires and some simply floated off through the air. An electric switch box across the street was ripped open and a transformer destroyed, leaving the east side of the town in darkness."

Getting Hitched

etting married in Spain is still a popular event, but the Catholic Church is worried that civil marriages are becoming more frequent. Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, “number 2” in the new ‘PP’ government, who gave birth just before the elections, is a high profile female politician who chose a non-Catholic civil wedding. In 1996, of the 200,000 marriages, only a quarter were civil marriages but by 2008 it was 99,000 Catholic and 94,000 civil marriages. Since then, the number of civil marriages has continued to rise. The average of civil marriages in different areas in 2010 was 57%, but in the 1st quarter of 2011 had risen to 64%. In Almería province, in 2010 there were 2,128 weddings, with 1,106 in civil registries. Sociologists consider that the current generation of young people has grown up without the strong religious ties that their parents had, and “feminism” and the emancipation of young women has made this attitude even stronger. The average age of persons getting married in Spain is now 31.2 years, not very different from the average age of 32.3 years for having a first child. Many couples who decide to get married have lived together for some time, often years, and may have had children as well, before they decide that marriage is the next step.

One child out of four born in Spain has parents who are not married, but this is much less than in some parts of northern Europe where two out of every three births are to non-married persons. Sociologist María Teresa Laespada believes that persons getting married now are much more aware of the likelihood of some marriages ending in divorce. She believes that civil marriages, in effect, take away the promise, ‘Till death do us part’, and substitute, ‘In love, but don’t know what will happen in 10 or 20 years’. Also, civil weddings have now become much more like their religious counterparts with flowers and music but with locations such as beaches, or in hotels and restaurants where the civil service is the prelude to the meal.

Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, the new ‘PP’ Minister of Justice, is concerned about the backlog of “agreed term” divorces that have to be heard by a judge. He has proposed that notaries should be empowered to settle such divorces without reference to the court. Having proposed this, he can see no reason why notaries should not be able to conduct weddings as well! The association of notaries thinks that this is a splendid idea, as their workload has fallen about 70% since the building boom crash. If this becomes law, perhaps it may simplify the conditions for non-Spanish marriages in Spain, as the paperwork chase at present is not simple, nor cheap. Non-Spanish persons often choose Gibraltar as an “easy” alternative, with much simpler paperwork requirements. John Lennon and Yoko The annual “Expoboda” wedding exhibition at Ono, Roger Moore, Frederick Forsythe and Sean Aguadulce this year attracted over 10,000 visitors Connery (twice!) were all married at Gibraltar.

Low Cost Flights

hanks to the pioneering efforts of Michael O’Leary of ‘Ryanair’, followed by ‘Easyjet’, low cost budget flights are now part of our lives. Other airlines have been forced to compete. When ‘Spanair’, the debt ridden Spanish carrier, went into liquidation right at the end of January, their president Javier Martínez de Velasco was quick to blame low cost competitors for their bankruptcy. He described ‘Ryanair’ in particular as being “pirates”. Michael O’Leary didn’t respond directly but within two days he took space in most Spanish daily newspapers offering flights in February and March with his famous “from 9.99 euros”. He soon announced that he was taking over 6 ‘Spanair’ routes from Barcelona including Barcelona to Alicante. Almost the same day, ‘Air Nostrum’ filed for a two year redundancy plan involving 1,800 employees. They hope to re-group after this period, but announced that flights from Almería would continue meanwhile.

‘Vueling” airlines, one of the most successful Spanish low cost operators was not far behind Michael O’Leary. On February 1st, they announced that from March 31st they would operate three flights a week from Almería to Barcelona “from” 44.99 euros. ‘Vueling’ have a considerable base in Barcelona, and these “tempter” prices were with a guaranteed onward flight connection from Barcelona to 24 destinations including Moscow, Amsterdam, Brussels, Munich, Rome and Zurich. At the recent tourism fair, ‘FITUR’, in Madrid, the Almería tourist board were in negotiations with ‘TUI’, who stopped bringing passengers to Almería in 2009, in an attempt to bring them back. Part of the incentives was with regard to airport taxes at Almería airport. This airport has an enormous potential capacity to attract airlines now that the new terminal is fully operational. ‘Ryanair’ pick regional airports as their destinations, to use their bargaining power to the best possible use, and are ruthless about threatening to pullout if there are any problems, such as the extra cost trying to be imposed on ‘Ryanair’ at Alicante airport, for the compulsory use of the passenger “air walkways”. Michael O’Leary thrives on negotiating the best prices and one of his “prophesies” is that one day, passengers will travel for no cost, with airports paying for flights into their facilities. Since coming to Spain in 2002, he has negotiated 100 million euros in subsidies from 23 Spanish airports, believed to be in the order of 12 euros per

passenger, almost 3 times the subsidies received by ‘Vueling’. ‘Rynair’ flew an astounding 34.1 million passengers on Spanish routes in 2011, with ‘Iberia’ only carrying 24 million passengers. ‘Vueling’ have stated that the summer flights from Almería airport to Barcelona will be continued in the winter months if they can see that the demand for flights is sufficient. If Almería airport can tempt more airlines to use Almería as a destination, this can only be beneficial for this area. Things may change once the 24hr airport is open at Covera in Murcia and the one at San Javier reverts to being just a military airport. Although test flights are taking place at the Corvera airport to obtain all the necessary certification, the opening date is still unknown. ‘Jet2’ are confirmed as an airline that is contracted to fly into there, but they are negotiating with the Murcian authorities to delay their arrival until November 2012, after the summer season is over. ‘Ryanair’ are often accused of hiding the actual cost behind the “small print” on their website, but providing you fully understand the conditions, and decide whether you are going to book in extra bags, and accept the credit card levies, the prices are still attractive.

Inside Almería airport

There is a fairly old joke about Michael O’Leary going into a pub in Dublin and ordering a pint of Guinness. The barman told him that it cost 1 euro and Michael replied, “That’s cheap!” The barman then said if he hadn’t brought his own glass there was a surcharge of 2 euros, so Michael grudgingly paid this. On getting his pint he headed for a table, but the barmen called out to him that the use of a table top was another 2 euros, and if he had not booked a chair on-line for a particular time slot, that was another 3 euros! Michael O’Leary exploded and demanded to see the manager. The barman replied that he was only available through their website via an e-mail, and all the terms and conditions were stated, including the final one that said he had to wash his glass after use and return it to the bar unless he wanted to pay the last surcharge of another 4 euros!

Some Dumb Criminals! Joseph H. Michaud left behind a key piece of evidence after holding up the ‘Walgreen’ pharmacy in Norwich. Police who were investigating the robbery found a jacket near the crime scene with a letter, addressed to Michaud, in one of the pockets. A standoff on eastbound Interstate 8 in La Mesa ended without anyone taken into custody. Two hours after officers drew their guns on a dark-colored sedan, Fox 5's news helicopter showed that no one was inside.

Police fined a woman on the spot when they discovered she had invented a burglary claim. She told police her 52” plasma TV had been stolen, but the window she said was used, was too small. A Novel Solution

ast month in our article “The Electricity Time Bomb”, we explained the problems facing the new Spanish Industry Minister, José Soria, in his attempts to keep down the cost of electricity. Since then he has stopped new alternative energy projects for 2012 to reduce the surcharge that the electricity supply companies are obliged to pay. There are now strong rumours that he is also investigating another route.

In 2002, the current Justice Minister, Ruiz Gallardón, who was then mayor of Madrid, announced a special Madrid tax on petrol and diesel that he called the “Health Céntimo”, to raise money for the Madrid Health Service. This tax now exists nationwide, but autonomous regions (such as Andalucía) have added their own “Health tax” and this is the main reason why the average cost of petrol and diesel is different in various communities. When we fill up at a garage in Spain, the price we pay includes on average, 41% of government taxes of which 18% is the IVA (VAT). Hidden within this 41% is the “Health tax” that is known by a very complicated name, “Impuestos a la Venta Minoristsa de Determinados Hidrocarburos” or “IVMDH” for short. What this means in practice is that we pay the Spanish state, 2.4 céntimos per litre for their

They will probably be exempt from this new tax as well. At one time, vehicle travellers from the UK to Spain tried to avoid buying fuel in France, as the French fuel costs were judged prohibitive. Now there is not much difference. If José Soria decided that he can get away with another céntimo or two on costs at the petrol pumps, he may well have de-fused the electricity time bomb.

José and His Cars

osé Moreno lives in El Ejido, near the roundabout spares. Born in 1952 in the Alpujarras, his family moved to Adra when he was a child and he settled in El Ejido after he got married. For 27 years he ran a vehicle bodywork and repair business, but now has just a small workshop for his hobby and passion. His first veteran car restoration was an Adler Triumph Junior from 1932, similar to the one outside his house. He slowly increased his collection by scouring Andalucía. Later, he started visiting veteran car events in the US, Germany, the UK, Italy and France. He and his veteran cars are now internationally famous and he has been featured in many specialist magazines and TV interviews. A 1915 American fire engine

At present, his collection is not open to the general public, but José hopes that he can organize his building to best effect, prepare a catalogue, and see if El Ejido council will help him open up his collection to the public. He says that most people think a visit has been a worthwhile experience. José is, of course, a leading member of the ‘Club de Vehículos Antiguos de Almería’ and his friend, José Juan Soria, who is now president, says that he has watched the collection of veteran cars and motorbikes grow over the years. He says that it is difficult to find such a comprehensive collection of vehicles in the rest of Europe. José has a current project that involves restoring a magnificent 1922 Buick two-seater saloon, with a petrol tank, luggage space and toolbox behind the seats. He says it is not too daunting when he knows by now how to obtain spares, through his José with his fire engine

One of his prize possessions is an early American fire engine from 1915. José heard about it from a friend, bought it, and then embarked on a mammoth paperwork chase to get it imported on a ship to Valencia. His most famous tractor, an ‘Abisinio’ dates from 1912, has iron wheels and survived the 1st World War. Altogether he has 50 veteran cars and 60 classic motorbikes. He restores them himself scouring catalogues to obtain original

the most difficult things about a fully restored and original car is that the driver has to adapt to the various differences in the driving controls. Some have very unique foot pedals, whilst others have a variety of hand controls. This annual major meeting is endorsed by the Almería tourist office who considers that it is part of the cultural and historic heritage of Spain, and has become a major tourist attraction for the area. The Almería club now has more than 100 veteran vehicle owners contacts and friends in many countries. The Almería veteran car club organizes a major outing every November from Almería city to various parts of the province. This year will be the 23rd such event. Vehicles usually come from Madrid, Jaén, Alicante, Valencia and Murcia and are either driven here, or put on a trailer. Owners from Mojácar and Vera are regular participants. Last year there were 40 veteran cars that all dated from before 1940. The club president, José Juan Soria, has a perfectly restored Ford model T, first registered in Spain in 1926. He says that one of

Veteran cars and motorcycles have to have a special ITV (MOT) test that is designed to prove that brakes and steering are properly functional, but of course have to ignore items such as seat belts, reversing lights, and sometimes indicators. If paperwork exists for such vehicles from the time it was first manufactured, the original number plate can be displayed. If a vehicle has been reregistered the owner is able to ask their traffic department if they can provide the original registration documents. José Soria considers that the paperwork chase to obtain documentation can be more frustrating than some aspects of the registration, but clubs such as the one in Almería help their members to “research” their restoration projects.

What’s On Exhibitions “Zoo Lógico” is an exhibition of paintings and sculpture by Carlos Tardez, exploring our concepts of animal symbolism through the ages. It can be seen until Easter Sunday, April 8th, at the Centro de Arte, Museo de Almería. Entrance is free, Monday 6pm-9pm, Tuesday to Friday 11am-2pm & 6pm-9pm, Sunday and fiesta days 11am-2pm. A “Smell Exhibition” entitled “Por Narices. Martín Santos Yubero, a famous Spanish photographer, has a retrospective exhibition u n t i l M ay 6 t h a t t h e photographic centre “CAF” in A l m e r í a c i t y. T h e 10 0 photographs selected by Publio López Mondéjar portray life in Spain between 1925 and 1975, and have come from many Spanish archive photographic locations.

What’s On PUPPY RESCUE - VERY URGENT APPEAL Maz Bailey, who founded Puppy Rescue in 2006 and has devoted her time since then rescuing abandoned and injured puppies, has severe health problems and she has to return to the UK as soon as possible. As a result, 45 dogs and puppies, some in her care and some her own, need homes. The police department, famous for its superior canine (K-9) unit, was somewhat taken aback by a recent incident.
