Moors & Christians and San Juan

he Spanish population agrees that May had “tiempo loco” (crazy weather). Apart from the almost daily winds, an orange alert was issued by the local met office on Saturday, May 19th and they weren’t wrong! Gales of 70km/hr were experienced, with broken palm trees and blown down hoardings in many places; the Adra “Snipe” class sailing competition on Sunday, May 20th had to be cancelled, it was just too gusty. June in Mojácar is the month of the annual “Moors & Christians” fiestas. They usually take place on the weekend nearest June 10th, but are sometimes altered when it clashes with other events. This year the religious celebration of Corpus Christi falls on Thursday, June 7th. This is a fiesta day in some areas and some people will take the Friday off as well and make it a “puente” weekend, so the Moors & Christians weekend has been moved to June 15th-17th. June 9th is the Community of Murcia fiesta day, so banks, offices, etcetera will be closed in Murcia province, and Carboneras celebrates the Fiestas of San Antonio on June 9th-13th, along with Vera and VélezBlanco. The Moors & Christians procession in Mojácar

The Mojácar fiestas celebrate the “truce” agreed between the Catholic forces of the Kingdom of Granada and the Moors living in Mojácar who they were waging war with. On June 10th, 1488, emissaries of the Catholic forces who were camped in Vera came to Mojácar and negotiated a settlement with the Moors. Mojácar was important

both strategically and for trade. The ruler of the Moors, Alabez, proposed that the peaceful coexistence of both Moors and Christians was the best solution. This agreement was reached on June 12th, 1488. During the Fiesta, different groups of Moors and Christians are represented and on Friday 15th will set up their camps in the village known as “cábilas”, with a procession in typical clothes of the time. Saturday sees street markets with music and jugglers in the village and a horseback reenactment on the beach, with very loud musket fusillades. The main and colourful procession on the late afternoon of Sunday starts at the top of the village and comes slowly down to the Mojácar ‘fuente’ (fountain). Some years those at the front of the procession claim they can be bussed back up to the village, change, and get back to see the final groups process. This year, UK Father’s Day is also on June 17th, so if you go out for lunch and then up to the village you can celebrate both! Having recovered from the celebrations, the San Juan (St John) fiesta is on the following Sunday, June 24th. The night before is a time for bonfires, parties on the beach and jumping into the sea. This combines the pagan events of the midsummer solstice when the night is the “shortest”, with June 24th, reputedly the birth date of St. John the Baptist. Traditionally, it was thought that washing yourself with sea water and a herbal mixture enhanced the beauty of women and they would be lucky in love. In Alicante and other areas these bonfires, known as “Las Hogueras”, go on for several days, sometimes with a carnival queen, “Belleza de Foc” (Beauty of the fire). Mojácar, Garrucha, Roquetas, Cabo de Gata, San Juan de los Terreros, Aguilas and Villaricos all have bonfires on the beach, whilst Vera has an event with dance and music at their ‘fuente’ area. There are no “red” national fiesta dates in June, but as you can see, plenty of other happenings.

Focus on Local News Vet Drugs in Baby Food Scientists from Almería University have discovered traces of veterinary medication in twelve samples of baby food containing meat or poultry and in nine samples of powdered milk. The head of the chemical analysis laboratory, Antonia Garrido, states that the levels were very low, from 0.5 to 25 micrograms per kilo, with the highest levels in chicken or other poultry based food. Nevertheless, she considers that the level should be zero, and says there are no EU guidelines that specify the level of antibiotics or parasite treatment levels in animals or poultry that are slaughtered or milked and used in baby food. These results have been obtained from sophisticated gas chromatography analysis, a pioneering technique at the university, which has been published in the review magazine, “Food Chemistry”. Antonia says that parents should not be alarmed, but higher levels than those found could result in an allergic reaction or immunity to antibiotics. A Heated Debate After a tense and heated debate, the budget austerity measures put forward by the Junta de Andalucía were finally accepted on May 17th by central government. The Spanish Fiscal and Finance committee initially rejected the figures put forward during the morning session. Cristóbal Montoro, the chairman, instructed all the autonomous communities that they had to boost income by adjusting their portion of income tax, levy “green” taxes and increase the “health tax” on fuel to the maximum allowed by current legislation. This will mean that in Andalucía, including Almería province, the existing “health tax” of 2.4 céntimos will have to be raised to 4.8 céntimos on every litre of fuel. Blood For Dogs Dogs need blood transfusions now and then, just like humans. A vet in Roquetas has started his own blood bank as dog blood is only stored in a few central blood banks in Spain. Miguel Castillo is inviting dog owners to bring their dogs to him for

blood collection and storage. Suitable dogs, with a special health check, have to be over 25 kilos in weight. To offset the rigorous health checks he is paying 20 euros for a blood donation. Dog blood groups are much more complicated than human blood, but Miguel considered that with his readily available supply of blood, he will be able to offer a better service. Want a BT ‘Phone Box? If you collect UK memorabilia, how about one of the red British Telecom ‘phone boxes? BT are selling off their remaining stock of the redundant public telephone boxes. The cost is 2,400 pounds sterling (so about 2,600 euros) including VAT. There is one snag! You have to pay for collection and carriage charges, and the mainly cast iron boxes weigh 760 kgs. The famous design was the work of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott who designed the existing “K6” model in 1926. Originally they were to be painted grey outside and green inside, but then the colour was changed to red, to match UK pillar boxes.

Mojácar Rates Mojácar town hall has announced that a special discount of 5% off the 2012 “IBI” (rates) amounts is available to those persons who authorize an annual direct debit from their bank account, or have one already. The amount of the discount cannot exceed more than 175 euros. The opposition PSOE party leader, Manuel Zamora, has described this as “just a smokescreen”. He considers that the rates are amongst the most expensive in Andalucía, and should be reduced for everyone. When the new rates office (‘Oficina Catastral’) was set up in Marina de la Torre, one of the claims was that if everybody paid the correct rates, the amounts would be reduced. Manuel Zamora states that it is on record that the rates will not be reduced until 2014. The last date to arrange for your rates to come out of your bank is June 14th. Melon Row “COAG”, an association of agricultural growers, is complaining bitterly about the ‘Dia’ supermarket chain. They claim that most of the melons now being sold come from Senegal, not Almería or Murcia. ‘Dia’ have responded by saying that when it is the high season for melons they will sell the locally grown ones, but “COAG” say there are plenty of melons available now! They also claim that ‘Dia’ show the origin of some melons on their gondolas as being from Brazil, whereas again they come from Senegal if you look closely. “COAG” say the laws regarding product origin labels in supermarkets need tightening up. Swimming Lessons Huércal-Overa council and schools are to start swimming lessons for school children as part of their P.E syllabus during school time. The lessons will take place in the municipal covered swimming pool at the ‘Polideportivo’ centre. The sports councillor from Huércal-Overa says that this

White Goods Slump Sales of “white goods” or electro-domestic appliance are falling off. ‘Anfel’, the manufacturer’s body, says sales up to the end of April are 12% down on 2011. Tumble dryer sales have fallen off 33%, cookers by 24%, freezers by 15% and fridges by 14%. Only washing machines and dishwashers show a smaller drop of 5% and 10%. Only more energy-efficient products such as air-con units, where a big saving can be made in electricity bills, are keeping up in sales. ‘Anfel’ represents 13 major manufacturers and 10,000 workers, and have seen sales fall for the last 2 years.

More Health Regulations Apart from the proposed payment in part for prescription drugs, it has emerged that a charge may be made for routine ambulance collection and return of some patients. This would apply to the 250 persons in Almería province who regularly need dialysis treatment (sometimes three times a week) and persons requiring an ambulance for radiotherapy treatment or physiotherapy. Like the prescription contributions, patients will be charged 10% of the ambulance cost, stated to be an average of 60 euros, depending on distance. This charge will be means tested again, and subject to refunds if the 10% is more than the 8 euros, or 18 euros monthly limit determined by income. The method of collecting this money and any

Focus on Local News continued refunds appears to be even more complicated than the prescription charges. The communities of Galicia, Valencia and Castilla-La Mancha are proposing a different solution. They think that hospital patients should be asked to contribute to the cost of the meals. The thinking behind this is that if a patient was not in hospital they still have to buy food to eat. In Germany, patients contribute 10 euros per day, to cover food and non-medical services. Valencia community has now decided that inpatients in hospital will have to pay 5 euros a day towards non-medical expenses, but not those in intensive care, or the chronically ill. The Spanish Health Minister, Ana Mato, has stated that it was up to individual communities, (including Andalucía), to decide how to make the savings that the government has specified. Mojácar Visit ‘Natalie Tours’ the Russian tour operator brought 35 Russian travel agents to Almería province recently. Amongst other places, they toured Mojácar where they were shown round by Carmen García from the tourist office. The first flight from Russia will arrive on June 16th and all the available seats are sold with 50% of reservations for the second flight. Not Rubber Stamped The Junta de Andalucía, the governing body for Almería province, has announced that they will not increase school class sizes, as stipulated by central government. Along with other autonomous communities they plan to appeal against the extra hours teachers are supposed to spend in the classroom, and also the contributions that are to be made on prescription charges and transport to hospitals. Retirement Age Spanish legislation extends the official retirement age of 65 by one month from 2013, finishing up at 67 years in 2027. It is hoped in 2013 that legislation will be passed to reduce the Social Security amounts that workers pay. Independent

experts are saying that one month per year is not enough, and it has to be brought forward as soon as possible, otherwise the Spanish Social Security will go into deficit. Huércal-Overa Rates Although the final number is not yet known, Huércal-Overa council considers that 10,000 houses, garages and land are not paying ‘IBI’ (council rates). A council spokesperson states that this is 55% of the total of all the rates that should be collected. A new ‘Oficina Municipal de Información Catastral’ (rates office) was set up in 2011. Maribel Sánchez, in charge of this department, blames it all on previous councils. She says that in one block of apartments, two floors are not sent rate bills, whilst another two pay different amounts. The monetary income being lost is said to be 2 million euros per year.

Torre Laguna

El Ejido Sky Scraper The “Torre Laguna” sky scraper in El Ejido was officially opened last month. It has 28 floors including two underground. There are 119 apartments up to the 10th floor and 54 large offices up to the 24th floor. The top floor is reserved for a panoramic restaurant, with a cafe on the floor below. At 104 metres tall, it is the highest sky scraper in Southern Spain as regards usable space. A Japanese lift takes 40 seconds to reach the top floor, or you can climb 600 steps. The building was started in 2005 but faced a 14 month halt in 2008 when the promoter “Dórica S.A.” went to court over a dispute with the building company. The promoter agrees that 2012 is not a good time to complete such a project, but compares it to the Empire state building in New York, that was also built during a severe recession! ‘El Gnomo Feliz’ Eviction Police and court officials evicted the leaseholders of the Gnomo Feliz bar and restaurant in Puerto Rey on May 15th. Three dwellings, one of which was their living accommodation, were also affected. Manuel Jiménez and Ausra Klikunaite legally rented the premises in 2009, on a long lease for 180,000 euros from the proprietors ‘Ingofersa’ but Banco de Santander want to sell off the properties to pay outstanding debts. It wasn’t until this February that Manuel and Ausra learnt about this when another eviction order was suspended. Friends and customers attempted to stop this latest eviction, but the couple were given one hour to vacate the premises and house. Four employees have lost their jobs. Manuel says his legal advice is that his lease is valid, he has all the licences he needs and is up to date with any taxes. There was one slightly comic moment. Police and court officials turned up with a locksmith to change the locks, but there were no doors. Manuel was asked where the doors were, and replied they would have to ask the thief who had stolen them! Major Drug Ring Busted 21 members of a large drug smuggling gang have been arrested including 4 persons from El Ejido and the alleged leader of the ring. Police seized 2,800 kilos of cannabis resin, mostly smuggled in from Morocco. Three properties were searched in El Ejido and one in Málaga. Guardia Civil police officers seized equipment from a laboratory, 17 vehicles, 2 articulated lorry tractor units and 1 lorry trailer, 6 other trailers, a pleasure craft, 2 outboard motors, 32 mobile ‘phones and 3,600 euros in cash.

Some Peculiarities The month of June is when declarations for Spanish income tax have to be made. An “estimated” payment or refund form is sent out each year in April by the tax authority, “Hacienda”, to persons who have a straightforward tax status. Once agreed, any refunds applicable are quickly made. Sergio Sánchez was quite surprised when a form arrived for his son Daniel, stating he was entitled to a refund of 36 céntimos, particularly as Daniel is only 18 months old! Another 5 year old, with a small bank account in her name, was told she had a refund of 84 céntimos. Javier Arenas, the leader of the Junta de Andalucía ‘PP’ party, asked last year why he had not received his joint estimate. He was told that according to the tax records he and his wife were both dead.

Cut Flowers Boom Growers of cut flowers in Almería province have increased their sales in the first quarter of 2012 by 155%. 2,000 tonnes of flowers have been exported, mostly to Holland (51%), France (32%) and the remainder to the UK, Belgium and Denmark. This amounts to 8,200 euros. This means that all wages up to the end of April, on an average per year, are spoken for. In Madrid, this time period extends to May 5th and May 8th in Catalonia.

Not Yet in Profit Figures for 2011 show that Almería airport handled 781,000 passengers, almost the same as in 2010. Total revenue including for freight amounted to 9 million euros. The major expansion carried out at the airport during 2011 resulted in a total cost of 17 million euros, so in actual fact the airport made a loss of 8 million euros. During 2012, the extra routes from ‘Ryanair’ and the start of the ‘Vueling’ flights between Almería and Barcelona should improve on these passenger numbers. The Spanish company ‘Vueling’ operates to a wide range of countries from their hub in Barcelona. It is hoped that this results in more passengers to Almería who use ‘Vueling’ as an access point, not just Spanish Nationals but international passengers as well. Road Accidents One problem for the emergency services is accidents on secondary roads with not much traffic, and often a delay before they are notified. This will all change in 2015 when all new vehicles will automatically send out an emergency “e-call” if an airbag is actuated. Other motorists will be able to be advised of bottlenecks, and secure parking information will be sent to long distance lorry drivers. Initially, some 7,500 vehicles in Almería province will have this technology that will be standard throughout Europe. The nationality of the vehicle registration, different mobile ‘phone operators and any make of vehicle, will all be covered by the implementation of this new technology, designed to be adopted by all EU Huércal-Overa Cavern countries. Maestro Padilla Drama At 11.30am on May 30th, Almería city emergency services were notified that a serious fire had broken out at the Maestro Padilla auditorium, in the middle of a performance. Police, fire crews, ambulances and civil protection services rushed to the scene. They found a stage full of “actors”, an “audience” including many children, with some adults and children stumbling round with bloody “wounds”. In reality the whole event had been staged, and was a test of the response time and emergency plans for evacuation. The children had come from nearby schools for the morning. Lorry Accident A large lorry recently went over the A-92 motorway embankment and overturned after falling 12 metres. The driver wasn’t injured, but part of his load was caustic soda that spilled onto

Prison Break Prisoners at the El Acebuche prison in Almería who have committed minor offences, and with good behavior, are allowed out during working hours to be employed. Now, some 44 of these “category 3” prisoners; 28 men and 16 women are allowed to sleep outside the prison with electronic “tracker” wrist devices. They have to be in a designated house between 11pm and 7am, and if they leave the premises a signal to this effect is transmitted to the prison control room. This is thanks to a device similar to a computer modem. There are 75,000 prisoners in jail throughout Spain at a cost of 25,000 euros per prisoner per year. The tracker wrist devices, on the other hand, only cost 17 euros. An El Acebuche prison spokesman stated that the persons released under this scheme had to be in prison for only minor offences, have a record of good behaviour, and be selected after a rigorous procedure. Last month, a woman was arrested for attempting to smuggle 100 “ectasy” type tablets into the prison, where her son is an inmate. The notable thing was her age of 65 years!

So Now You Know... Post-It Notes An engineer working for the “3M” company was trying to come up with strong glue. One of his experiments produced a weak glue that left no marks but was sticky and didn’t dry out. A friend of the inventor started using the glue on small notes and used them as markers in his hymn book. By 1977, a marketing experiment was made to see if these “markers” had a general use and in 1981, “Post-It Notes” were officially launched. By the year 2000, there were 57 shapes available in 27 sizes and 29 colours. Famous artists painted on Post-It notes in 2001 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the official release date. X-rays and Scanners A German scientist discovered in 1895 that he had stumbled on “an unknown” system of electromagnetic radiation. His wife put her hand in the device and it showed up her bones. The system was called “X-rays” because the exact scientific reason was not clear. It was so useful however that he was awarded the first Nobel Prize for Physics in 1901. Godfrey Hounsfield, an English engineer, patented “CAT” scanning (computer aided tomography) in 1968 and ‘EMI’ produced the first body scanner in 1971, taking X-rays from different angles. ‘MRI’ scanners enabled soft tissue to be imaged as well as hard tissue. Hats John Hetherington was a London haberdasher who showed off his new invention, a top hat, in 1797 in the London streets. He was arrested and fined 5 pounds for causing a breach of the peace! In 1849, William Coke ordered a stylish hat to protect his head whilst out shooting. The hatters, Thomas & William Bowler, produced a hat, soon known as a “bowler” hat. In 1875, Lord Derby went to America and his bowler hat was a success there, so the Americans called it a “derby”. The “trilby” hat was designed for a stage production of the novel by George du Maurier called “Trilby”. Film star Greta Garbo made famous “pillbox” hats in 1932.

Canned Food Soldiers in the field often got food poisoning from the food they were provided with. In 1795, the French government offered a prize of 12,000 francs to anybody who could devise a method of keeping food edible and safe. A Frenchman claimed the prize in 1810 but his containers were glass jars. Peter Durand, an English inventor, designed the first tin can and sold his idea to Donkin & Hill who went into manufacture in 1812. The Heinz company started selling baked beans to UK customers as a cheap working class product during the 20th century and coined the slogan “Beanz Meanz Heinz”. A can opener was not invented until 1855. Ice Cream Legend has it that the court of King Charles l enjoyed ice cream, but it was a dessert only eaten by royalty. In 1851, a dairyman, Jacob Fussell from Baltimore, started freezing excess cream to stop it being wasted. His children thought it was wonderful and Jacob set up a small factory. His method produced ice cream at a fraction of the normal cost so eventually he had factories all over North America. Christian Nelson was an American sweet shop owner who one day watched children agonizing over whether to buy chocolate or an ice cream. He developed the first “choc-ice”, known as “Eskimo Pie”, combining the two. Ten Pin Bowling During excavations in Egypt, a grave was found thought to date from 5,200 BC. Inside were a ball and nine skittles. In the 17th century, Dutch settlers in the US imported their game “ninepin” bowling into the US and it became a popular pursuit. In the 19th century, authorities in Connecticut and New York banned ninepin bowling as they considered it encouraged gambling and drinking. Seeking a way to overcome this ban, gamblers and bowlers added another skittle so it became “tenpin” bowling. Mechanized bowling alleys made the game popular for all ages. The first world championship took place in 1954.

Ramadan

etween the middle of June and the middle of September, Almería port handles nearly one million passengers who travel back to North African countries and then make the return journey. The vast majority of them are Muslims who celebrate “Ramadan” in their native country. “Ramadan” is the most important Muslim religious event and is the ninth month in the Muslim calendar, based on cycles of the moon. Just as the date of Easter for Christians is tied into the moon, Ramadan is the holy ninth month after the crescent moon is first visible, so the date changes every year. In 2012, it is from July 20th to August 19th. Muslims believe that during Ramadan, God revealed the Koran (the Muslim bible) to the archangel Gabriel, who slowly revealed it to the prophet Mohammed. Muslims must fast from sunrise to sunset, and only the chronically ill or some pregnant or nursing mothers are exempt. Any “unclean” activity is banned during the day, including sexual intercourse.

They state that some vehicle manufacturers may well curtail their dealerships, with only a handful of sales. They consider that instead of going up, a reduced rate of IVA is needed to kick-start the market. They say that the more cars that are sold, the more the government gets in taxes, so encourage more sales by a reduction in taxes!

Blood Ties

he Spanish Institute of Statistics state that 47,000 families in Almería province have all members of the family without any work. In the UK riots last year, unemployment and lack of benefit was given as the single underlying problem that resulted in such a high level of vandalism, arson and public disobedience. The ‘Fundación Encuentro’ has surveyed thousands of unemployed people in Spain up to the age of 34. They state that 1 in 8 persons from 18-34 are being subsidised with either monetar y contributions, or clothes, or meals from direct family members. This is given as one of the main reasons how many of the homes where all members of the family are unemployed manage to keep their heads above water. 30% of males and females aged 18-24 receive monetary help from their family, and another 11% get some income from state benefits. 4% receive extra monetary help from friends. Apart from money, 18% of this group gets other assistance in the form of meals or clothing. People in employment between the ages of 50 and 65 years of age are the group least likely to lose their employment, particularly women. This age group does not usually have to pay mortgages, and their homes or second homes give living accommodation to younger family members. In effect, they are subsidising their children or grandchildren. This help that comes from the oldest to the youngest is a particular feature of Spanish society in the last two years. There are of course some reverse benefits where the young or middle-

aged look after their parents or grandparents, often by preparing meals. Another study from 2011 for people in Almería province has revealed that 75% of adults under the age of 30 still live with their parents. This percentage has increased somewhat since the economic crisis. In 2008, 70% of this age group had not moved out of the family home. These figures of persons termed “nest huggers” are much higher than in many other EU states, and unimaginable in the UK. Throughout Andalucía, latest census figures record 1.46 million persons between 16 and 29 years of age and only 347,000 of these have left the family home. A staggering 45% of this age group in Almería province are unemployed. During 2011, 28,900 young people from Almería province, the majority of them graduates, went off to work in Argentina, Norway, Germany and the UK as architects, engineers, in marketing jobs or in healthcare.

Living with family beyond the age of 25 or 30 in Spain, is not a new situation. Even someone as famous as “Rafa” Nadal still lives with his family and considers that he needs the constant family support to keep him focused in his tennis career, and also partly shielded from the press. Lorca, One Year On

ay 11th was the first anniversary of the tragic and horrendous earthquakes that devastated the historic city of Lorca. For any reader who doesn’t know what happened, two earthquakes (the second one the biggest) flattened 2,100 apartments and houses. The castle, many churches and business premises were badly damaged. Nine people were left dead, 300 injured and 10,000 out of a population of 60,000 homeless. 25,000 properties were damaged to some extent.

A zoo in Germany has scrapped its plans to break up homosexual penguin couples after gay rights groups protested against it. A rampant rhinoceros gave a group of visitors a glimpse of nature in the raw at a British safari park when he tried to have sex with their car. Sharka, a two-ton white rhino, got amorous with Dave Alsop's car when he stopped to take pictures of the animal mating with its partner at the West Midland Safari Park. The 12year-old rhino dented the doors and ripped off the wing mirrors before Dave drove away with a puffing Sharka in pursuit.

Motoring Mania! A lighthearted look.. Now here’s a car we all could buy, and it’s only 4,917 euros. It’s called the Renault Twizy (where do they get these names from?) and we’re talking about the basic model, the Urban 45. Actually it’s not a “car”, it qualifies as a super quad bike, so no driving licence necessary for this basic version. There are no doors; the driver and one passenger sit one behind the other, in a sort of squashed cylinder. And no air-con or heater, but that’s good because the “Twizy” is an electric car. It goes for 100kms after a 3 hour charge. Actually, from 55kms to 115kms, depending on your driving style and traffic.

It does have an airbag, and a 4 point harness for the driver, so you don’t fall out going round corners. There may be one snag. ‘Renault’ don’t sell you the battery with the car! You have to rent it at 45 euros per month – so every 10 months you have paid 450 euros, or if you keep it for 5 years 2,250 euros. That’s nearly half what you paid in the first place! Perhaps this is going to be a problem with all electric cars?

What’s On The Almeria Strings Folk Festival is on June 22nd-24th at the Travellers Inn, Los Marcelinos nr. Albox from 7.00pm Friday until Sunday afternoon. The three-day festival will be a weekend of music with performances of guitar, mandolin and singing workshops, an instrument setup and maintenance clinic, a ceilidh/barn dance, and a concert on Saturday night. There will also be music sessions throughout the weekend that acoustic musicians of all levels can participate in. In addition to the music, there will be arts and crafts stalls from 10.00 am Saturday morning through S u n d ay a f te r n o o n . A l l proceeds from the festival to benefit local animal charities. Almeria municipal band perform a concert of film music on June 14th. “Música y Toros” is performed on June 21st. “Conciertos de Antaño” is performed on June 28th. “La banda con los niños” is performed on July 5th. All concerts start at 8.30pm and take place in the open air amphitheatre in La Rambla, Almería city. Admission is free. The Clasijazz Big Band and the Gospel choir Clasijazz on June 9th. Alzabara Acoustic Festival F r i d a y, J u n e 15 t h , ”Zimmerband”, a Bob Dylan tribute band from Almería, and “La Scala de Richter” group. Friday, June 29th, “Limbotheque” group from Valencia. Both concerts in the Albox town hall, ‘Salón de Actos’, at 10pm. Ticket entrance 7 euros, including a drink at Café Pub Coyote after the concerts.

Classic Opera ‘Teatro Lirico Andaluz’ perform “La Revoltosa”, a classical opera on June 16th at 7pm, Maestro Padilla Auditorio in Almería city. Tickets are 15 & 20 euros.

Dance & Ballet “Folclore”, a mixture of dance and ballet is performed by pupils from Huércal-Overa & Vélez-Blanco on June 15th at 8.30pm. Teatro Municipal Huércal-Overa.

What’s On Rock Festival ‘Byyyana Rock 2012’ will take place June 28th-30th at Pechina near Viator, Almería. June 28th performers will be local groups, and Spanish groups from all over Spain will perform on the following days. The festival was last held in 2008 and attracted 3,000 visitors and famous groups.

A man and a woman were having dinner in a fine restaurant. Their waitress, taking another order at a table a few paces away noticed that the man was slowly sliding down his chair and under the table, with the woman acting unconcerned. The waitress watched as the man slid all the way down his chair and out of sight under the table. Still, the woman dining with him appeared calm and unruffled, apparently unaware that her dining companion had disappeared. Construction Site An Italian, an Irishman and a Chinese fellow are hired at a Sydney construction site. Ye left the Chinese fella in charge of supplies, but I couldn't fin' him." The foreman is really angry now, and storms off looking for the Chinese guy. He can't find him anywhere and is getting angrier by the minute. Just then, the Chinese guy springs out from behind the pile of sand and yells... "SURPLISE!!"

A man in a bar sees a friend at a table, drinking by himself. Approaching the friend he comments, "You look terrible. What's the problem?" "My mother died in June," he said, "and left me 10,000 euros." "Gee, that's tough," he replied. "Then in July," the friend continued, "My father died leaving me 50,000 euros." "Wow. Two parents gone in two months. No wonder you're depressed." "And last month my aunt died, and left me 15,000 euros." "Three close family members lost in three months? How sad." "Then this month," continued the friend, "nothing!"
