A Decisive Week!

o the Brexit vote was “out” and it remains to be seen how long Boris Johnson the new Prime Minister from October waits before he invokes Article 50 and the EU withdrawal begins. In the coming months and then over a period that analysts think might take ten years it may be all sorted out. There are many ex-pats in Spain who moved here before Spain joined the EU on January1st 1968 who could work here, buy property, pay into the Spanish Social Security system, and receive free health care. There will have to be bi-lateral agreement between the UK and Spain on a variety of topics.

Almería city from July 14th-23rd with a variety of exponents of this art form. August events mostly switch to the open air but consequently are often with free admission. The Almería Diputación (County Council) and the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) fund theatre, film, and children's entertainment events, that town halls can book to perform in their municipality for free.

Despite continuing friction between Spain and Gibraltar 19,322 residents and 95% of voters opted to stay in but Spain is already proposing talks to establish joint sovereignty status with the Spanish flag flying alongside the Union Jack! Political analysts say that Holland will be next.

La Virgen del Carmen

The key fiesta date in coastal areas on July 16th is the festivities relating to the Virgin (Mary) of Carmen who is the patron saint of the sea. After a church service large statues of her are carried down to ports and put on decorated fishing boats who will let members of the public on board. This event is to ask for protections from bad weather in the coming year and good catches. In places such as Garrucha other activities take place at the same time with food and drink, concerts, and fireworks. The annual Turre fiestas in honour of their patron Mojácar residents and a host of people of all saint Santiago Apóstal take place from July 23rdnationalities were saddened to learn by word of 25th mouth or social media sites that the legendary Tito of beach bar fame died on June 22nd after a short August 15th is a “red” religious fiesta day when illness. Focus on Local News “Brexit”

and in theory the paseo will be extended to the Spanish companies that have a large presence in the Parque Comercial in Phase 3. UK are showing concerns after the “Brexit” referendum voted to leave the UK. After US and German companies, Spain has the largest stake in UK companies, and the Spanish banking section is the major entity with 360 billion Euros in active funds and up to 500 billion Euros when insurance, mortgages and other funds are taken into account. The UK arm of Banco Santander have 30% of their total operations in the UK and employ 25,800 people after they took over Abbey National, Bradford and Bingley, and Alliance and Leicester. The Sabadell bank have 20% of their operations in the UK and took over the Trustee Savings Bank not long ago and up to the end of March 25% of their net income came from the UK. Telefónica own O2 with 25 million customers and the power company Iberdrola have 5.5 million customers and employ 6,700 people. Their expansion plans in the UK, unless re-thought, are to pump in 8 billion Euros by 2020. Ferrovial own Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Southampton airports and they are the largest stakeholder holding a 25% interest in Heathrow Handling Services who own and run Heathrow airport. They are a major stakeholder in Photo by Rod Westwood the Universities Superannuation Schemes Ltd, one R.I.P Tito of the largest pension schemes in the UK, who also own 10% of Heathrow Handling. Tito del Amo, one of Mojácar's most legendary characters who was inextricably linked with the history Not When We Said! of Mojácar, died after a short illness on June 22nd. Some Major Changes Inheritance tax in Spain depends on where a person lives and the rates in Andalucía have been very high compared to places such as Madrid. When the Ciudadanos party agreed to back the P.S.O.E. party in the Andalucían Parliament so that the two parties made up a majority following the last elections, there were various conditions. The Ciudadanos party were insistent that the high rates of inheritance tax were brought down in 2016, but the Finance Minister said it could not be done yet. An agreement has now been hammered out that is very beneficial to inheritors. Previously, the maximum amount tax free was 175,000 Euros so if two children each inherited less than this amount they paid no tax. If they inherited 175,001 Euros the appropriate high tax rate kicked in that was obviously unfair. From January 1st 2017, the allowance before tax has been raised to 200,000 Euros with no tax due. In addition, if the actual amount is higher than 200,000 but less than 320,000 the tax on the difference of up to 120,000 will only be a maximum of 13,068 Euros, a reduction of 77% as it stands now. If there is a married couple or registered partners who both own 50% of a property they will be able to inherit 280,000 Euros of the property value without paying any tax at all, whereas at present in this situation they would pay just under 20,000 Euros. Sons and daughters and some other close relatives or people over the age of 65 are also in a much better situation provided they have lived in the family home for two years. Each of these beneficiaries can now inherit a maximum of 242,000 Euros of the property value 95% tax free. This year, the Andalucía tax department will rake in 500 million Euros from inheritance tax, which will drop to 125 million in 2017. So good news for inheritors!

More Tourists The 'Costa de Almería' initiative is part of the Almería Tourist Board plans to attract tourists to Almería province. People from the tourist board take stands at major tourist fairs including the very large 'Fitur' event in Madrid every January. Contacts made and negotiations means that 36,000 tourists will come to the province between now and November from 11 different countries with 21 flights per week in the high season. The main flight organizer is the company 'Serhs Tourism S.A' and 18,500 tourists will come from Nordic countries such as Denmark, Finland, Norway and Iceland and 15,000 will come from Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. 1,700 Dutch tourists and over 1,000 Portuguese make up the grand total but apart from this 7,000 additional German tourist are expected. Other extended routes within Spain cater for Majorca, Madrid, and the Canary Islands, to attract Spanish nationals.

Paperwork Scam

Specialized police dealing with immigration and foreign residents have broken up a large organization that was supplying false documents for residence and work permits. 36 fictitious companies in Amería province were involved in the scam and others in Granada, Jaén, Córdoba and Murcia. In the initial phase, 16 people were arrested including a lawyer If & When from Granada. Focus on Local News applying for residence permits where the documentation was suspect and investigation found that the companies that were supposedly giving them work did not exist. There have been other such scams and one related to construction company that was allegedly giving work to a large number of women! As this was very unusual, investigations revealed the company was fraudulent. Some of these women quickly left to have children and claim maternity benefit.

The various political parties have all been explaining how they will deal with this if they received a controlling majority or coalition on June 26th. Following the elections, Spain will be told whether they are to be fined for not achieving EU targets in 2015 and projected targets in 2016. It is anticipated that this fine may be 0.2% of Gross National Product that would amount to 2 billion Euros.

The Russian Veto In August 2014, the Russian President Putin put a ban on importing fruit and vegetables from the EU that is still in force. The Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) Agriculture & Fisheries department has been paying out subsidies from EU funds as a result. Since August 2015, the latest subsidy for growers in Almería province totals 471,000 Euros that brings the grand total since 2014 up to 3.2 million Euros. Growers can apply for these subsidies where they have provided produce free to food banks and charities, used some production for animal food, or sent them to centres that use vegetables for generating biomass fuel, and as a last resort left them to rot. Vegetable and fruit growers in Seville have received 4.1 million Euros but Almería province has the next largest subsidy.

Still Bad Figures Spain and Greece (following the large bail-out) are the only two EU countries where the Gross National Product at the end of 2015 was worse than 2008. The Gross National Product (PIB in Spanish) is the total monetary amount of goods and services produced plus the net income from foreign investments. Spain is still just under 1% in deficit compared to gains of 22% in Germany, 13% in France, 19% in Belgium and Austria, and 14% in Holland. Of the countries where there has been a major bail-out, Ireland has achieved a gain of 19%, Portugal 4%, but Greece is still showing a deficit of - 24%. The UK is in a special position as it is not one of the Euro currency countries and has a gain of 30% to the end of 2015. The problems that mean Spain is struggling to come out of the red are high unemployment, mortgage problems and evictions, and overall debt.

More Flights From The UK Airline companies are unveiling their plans for 2017 and there is a large increase in routes into Almería airport from the UK. Thomas Cook are advertising flights from Birmingham, Glasgow, Stanstead, Gatwick, Manchester and Newcastle, and Jet2 are returning to Almería with flights from East Midlands, Edinburgh, Leeds, Bradford, Manchester and Newcastle from April 2017. Monarch Airlines and Thompson will continue to have flights from Gatwick and Manchester and Ryanair from Stanstead, and Easyjet from Gatwick. Easyjet say they will have daily flights until the end of summer 2017. There are still proposals being discussed that Jet2 may make Almería airport a major hub of their European flights with a permanent base here. In another local news item we narrate how Michael O'Leary is saying that Ryanair will cut prices dramatically to stay the market leader.

Another Historic Court Case A judge in Málaga has ordered Banco Popular to pay 58,000 Euros plus legal interest rates since 2004 to a UK couple who paid this amount of money over for a property that was never built. Banco Popular received deposits from purchasers on behalf of the promoter 'Aifos' who subsequently went into

The court ruled there was no guarantee that potential purchasers would be given a refund if the company went into liquidation that should have been in place and required by law. The couple contracted to buy a property from the promoter 'Aifos' for 168,000 Euros and paid over 58,000. Other cases coming before a Spanish court for the same reason when 'Aifos' went bust totalled 100 at the end of 2015 and are being lumped together in one court case where various banks are involved. The estimated number of people of all nationalities who lost money in similar circumstances is stated to be 3,000 who paid an average of 50,000 Euros for properties that were never built.

No Vote of Confidence The monthly surveys undertaken by the Spanish entity 'CIS' has shown that at the end of May, 82% of Spaniards considered the political situation in Spain was “bad”, or “very bad”. Before the General Elections last December this percentage of the population was only 68%. 75% considered that unemployment was still a very major concern and 47% saw the continuing corruption scandals to be a severe worry. New General Elections took place on June 26th.

No Excuses! María Seguí is the head of the 'DGT' Spanish Traffic Authority and has introduced many changes in legislation since she took charge. These include publishing details of where mobile radar detectors will be sited every month, a clarification of regulations for child safety in vehicles, and her recent proposals to cut down accidents and deaths on secondary roads. Her latest ruling relates to undercover vehicles used by police, the Ministry of Defence, the 'CNI' security services, and official vehicles for heads of national or regional government. Many of the police vehicles have flashing blue lights behind the radiator grilles or use a “bubble” that is put on the roof when necessary. They often break traffic regulations such as excess speed, jumping a red light, or other manoeuvres that are generally illegal. From now on, any such vehicle (with or without flashing lights) that is stopped and fined by traffic police has to provide full details of why they were in this situation such as direct orders from their superiors or part of a special

investigation authorized by a court. If this is not forthcoming within 70 days of the “offence” the fine will stand and points can be deducted from the driver's licence including drivers of vehicles used for official business. María Seguí says that being late for work or stuck in a traffic jam is not a valid excuse!

“An Oversight” There have been various times recently when an elderly motorist has been proceeding up the A-7 motorway on the wrong side of the road in reverse direction. In one case, there was a collision when a motorist travelled 300 metres in the wrong direction and did not stop, but later went to a police station in Almería city and told them he was the 76 year old driver. On June 6th at 10.30am police were alerted by more than 80 drivers and witnesses that a car was driving in the wrong direction on the A-7 motorway near Los Gallardos. Motorway police shut off the access to the motorway so no additional drivers could enter it and went in pursuit of the driver who by now had driven nearly 30 kms and was approaching the Huércal-Overa turn off. When stopped, the lone Spanish driver who was 81 years of age stated his actions were “an oversight”and he tested negative for alcohol. Luckily there were no collisions with other vehicles. Traffic police in Almería city stated that out of the total of 380,000 holders of driving licences in the province 12,500 were above the age of 70 and 36,000 were over the age of 65, but accidents in these age group were well below the average for all ages.

A Very Special Price The pressure groups 'Veraplayazul' are continuing their campaign to stop Vera council installing prefabricated concrete walkways on the beaches for the summer months. Despite this, a provisional contract has been awarded to a company in Granada without any possibility of competitive prices from other companies, or taking into account objections from interested parties. The P.P. political party opposition counsellors are also opposed to this but other council members voted this through. The contracted price is 49,999 Euros and 74 céntimos, just 26 céntimos less than the 50,000 Euros cost that would have meant a full council discussion and

They want to know why the traditional wooden walkways have been abandoned that they consider perfectly adequate, more in keeping with the environment, and cheaper.

A Timely Payment The Spanish state has announced that Andalucía will very quickly receive 751 million Euros that is money owing from a government fund that deals with the deficit figures in autonomous communities or loans for debts to third parties for work carried out from 2015. Payments like these are normally done at the end of the summer but national Spanish General Elections took place in Spain on June 26th. The timing of this payment (to practically all the autonomous communities) has been criticised as being “blatant electioneering” by other political parties. The P.P. government has been “in function” since last December 20th when the last elections took place without a new government being formed. Cristóbal Montoro, the Spanish Finance Minister, (again in function only) told the 'Europa' Press Agency that although it was approaching the date of the elections payments had to continue to be made where applicable. This has not cut much ice with other political parties!

'Cosentino' Expansion The enormous multi-national and family-owned company 'Cosentino' based at Cantoria have announced major expansion plans. Their synthetic worktops such as “Silestone” and their new “Dekton” product for worktops, floors, and cladding, continue to be in high demand in over 80 countries. Their plans for 2016-2019 are to undertake investment programmes totalling 380 million Euros with 290 million for research and development and increased production facilities, an increase to 175 'Cosentino

Fire Precautions Concerns are being expressed because of the lack of any prolonged rain in autumn and winter, and expected higher temperatures this summer. These all encourage fires to spread rapidly in forests and pasture land. All year round, the organization 'Infoca' deals with fire prevention measures during the winter and spring and fire-fighting when needed. They have a large number of fixed wing aircraft, helicopters, and fire fighting vehicles along with logistical support for setting up temporary headquarters. Their “Plan Infoca” with special restrictions regarding authorized fires and transport in woodlands runs from July 1stOctober 15th and there are 540 operatives spread throughout Andalucía that can quickly be switched to certain areas if needed. Every year, sheep and goat owners are paid to graze their animals on selected areas to create fire-breaks and 16,000 have grazed on 500 kms of fire-breaks and workers also cut down trees and foliage in forest roads. In over 90% of fires in 2015 in Almería province these were caused by human negligence where unauthorized

Focus on Local News burning of pasture land or agricultural waste got out of control, people who lit barbecues too close to woodland or bushes, and as happens every year, a few fires started intentionally. A seemingly non-risky act such as a man repairing a leak on an inflatable pool with a heat gun, workers soldering pipes to solar panels with a blow torch, and a man cutting up a scrap car using oxyacetylene equipment have all resulted in large fires in the past. People lighting barbecues anywhere, even in a home garden, are asked to have a working fire extinguisher to hand or a working hosepipe as a minimum requirement close by, and gas bottles if used should be placed where they can quickly be shut off. Persons seeing that a fire has started or any suspicious activity should immediately ring the National Emergency Number 112. All municipalities have had to provide maps showing roads, locations where water can be scooped up by helicopters and where they can land, and where logistical centres can be set up. The most dangerous conditions are the “30:30:30” scenario with temperatures more then 30 degrees, humidity less than 30 %, and winds above 30 km/hour described as a fire cocktail.

Special Paint A major nautical boat company in this area is 'Party Levante' based in Garrucha, who have various boats ranging from very large catamarans to small cabin cruisers and jet skis, and they organise a variety of excursions for the general public or hire. They are taking part in a survey to provide data relating to a new type of paint in conjunction with the manufacturer and the University of Córdoba Scientific Research and Development department. This special paint known as 'graphene' is a matrix of carbon atoms and is one of the new cutting edge hi-tech materials that has multiple uses including batteries for smartphones that would keep their charge for weeks. It should stop boats being taken out of the water regularly to have the bottoms cleaned. The University wanted to test the paint on a large vessel and one of the catamarans will be used. There are existing “anti-fouling” paints but this new product is a major development of a completely different technique. At present some boats have to be taken out of the water every year for re-painting or cleaning work

and it is hoped that this period of time can be extended to three, four, or more years. Having a boat out of the water that generates money such as those from 'Party Levante' cuts down excursion or hire income.

'Ryanair Rooms' Ryanair have announced that from October they are to offer accommodation options to all their customers from simple holiday homes to 5* hotels. This new venture has been christened 'Ryanair Rooms'. Kenny Jacobs, their marketing director, says that this is a logical extension of their excellent service to clients, and people who have accommodation and are interested in becoming listed are invited to register with Ryanair. They say that they want to become the 'Amazon' of air transport and other services. This sounds fairly complicated to administer.

No Case To Answer A judge in Almería city has ruled that court proceedings in one case against ex-mayor Cándido Trabalón, other council officials, and councillors in Zurgena from the period 2003-2007 has no foundation. The judge, Fermín Javier Villarrubía, stated that the case relating to the construction of 41 houses had what appeared to be favourable opinions as to the legality and the local police confirmed that there was water, electricity, sewage supplies and access, and the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) planning authority also raised no objection at the time. Focus on Local News was a small part of normal council matters voted on in council meetings and councillors in this case were probably entitled to consider the permission was valid. The judge did find that a technical architect specializing in urban development knew at the time that the existing urban development plan (PGOU) did not allow the construction as the land was not then zoned for urban use, but gave a favourable report. This person was given a prison term of six months (suspended), a seven year ban on being a technical architect, and a fine to be paid over a period of twelve months of 4,320 Euros. This is the sixth case to come before a court relating to alleged planning irregularities by Zurgena council that has now been quashed.

“Ilegal Houses” The P.P. political party in the Andalucían parliament are asking that major changes are made to allow more “illegal houses” to be regularized. They say that current regulations only apply to about 10% of these types of dwellings. They are asking that within two years there is an “amnesty” put in place where all properties can be legalized unless in areas of special protection, or river beds, or sites of archaeological interest. They say that town halls are struggling to amend their general planning documents (PGOU) to allow regularization. The Andalucía Parliament is run by the P.S.O.E. political party with assistance from the 'Ciudadanos' party who give them a majority vote. The local pressure group 'AUAN' went to the parliament on June 8th for a long meeting. Gerardo Vázquez their lawyer is optimistic that some changes are in the pipeline that may soon be put into law and some positive outcome may be on the cards, particularly for people who have no access to mains water or electricity. Fingers crossed!

Watch What You Eat! Scientists say that in summer months people eat less healthy food because they buy more prepared food, or food items on holiday that are generally bad. Home cooked products are reduced and this has an effect on their calorie intake. They have classified 20 “fast food” products as being particularly bad. A typical pizza heads the list that can be 1,260 calories, a mixed sandwich with mayonnaise 770, five pieces of fried

chicken and chips 738, chocolate cake 670, a hamburger with lettuce tomato and ketchup 633, 100 grams of milk chocolate 521, 2 balls of vanilla ice cream 360, a “hot dog” 350, and a can of normal cola 139 calories. They say that to work off calories a person who has bag of crisps and a can of beer has to walk at a steady rate for 40 minutes. They say that after drinking a “mojito”, exercise with a body pump or stepping is needed for 1 hour! They recommend taking healthy food prepared at home to the beach as a very good way of cutting down on calorie intake.

Working To Pay Taxes The Spanish “think tank” Civismo calculate each year the amount of money a wage earner has to earn to pay annual taxes including social security, income tax, 'IVA' (VAT), car tax, town hall taxes, and any other indirect amounts. They say that this year an average wage earner was free of taxes after June 29th two days earlier than in 2015 as income tax rates have been reduced. On an annual income of 35,000 Euros they calculate that 15,500 is spent on direct and indirect taxes. They say that in 2011, all the income earned to pay taxes finished on June 23rd. This time period varies with ages and they say that persons between the ages of 16-24 need to devote 151 days income for taxes, 182 days for the ages 45-54, and the highest time of 186 days for those aged 55 or over. This gives the average days needed as being 180 before a person has disposable income in their pockets to spend how they like.

Unemployment Susana Díaz is the President of the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) and has unveiled an ambitious plan to be put into place immediately with the aim of reducing the numbers of the unemployed in Andalucía to less than 900,000 before the end of the year. She is planning to work with various cities to generate employment and the formation of new businesses or expansion of existing ones so that they can offer employment and she has set aside 7 million Euros for this project. Total unemployment in June in Andalucía totalled 2.8 million which is proportionally higher than many other parts of Spain.

Focus on Local News Seismic Investigations A special Spanish Navy oceanographic investigation vessel 'Hespérides' has spent a week surveying the Alboran sea off Almería, Granada and Melilla. The number of tremors recorded has been logged as totalling 2,368 “events” between January 21st when there was a major tremor and May 13th. 164 of these were of sufficient strength that they were felt by the general population on land in various areas, and on January 25th there was one that measured 6.3 on the Richter scale and was the equivalent of 20,000 tons of TNT exploding. One of the investigations was to chart a previously unknown fault line that appears to be in the North/South direction about 25 kms in length. There is another well known fault line called 'Tofiño Bank' in a similar area that is related to major seismic events in 1994 and 2004. The area where they were carrying out their investigation is where the tectonic plates of African and the Euro Asiatic slowly grind together. The results of the survey will be analysed at various universities and oceanographic facilities. A spokesperson stated that Spain has only moderate risk of earthquakes but the Alboran sea area has by far the most events of anywhere in Spain, but this present activity is not seen as a prelude to anything serious.

'PIVE' 8 The discount system for the purchase of a new vehicle when an old one has been scrapped is still in operation with the 8th such system. At the end of May, there was 58 million Euros left in the kitty from the Spanish government, sufficient for 78,000 new sales. Any money not used up by July 31st will be frozen but dealers think demand will outstrip the supply. The first 'PIVE' system was put in place in 2012 and has been renewed as the money ran out. Initially the scheme gave a discount of 1,000 Euros from the government, matched by another 1,000 Euros from the manufacturer, with many dealers throwing in free “goodies” or an upgrade to get the sale. The current scheme is 750 Euros each and will probably be the last one as it is considered the motor trade can now go it alone. There are special discounts for electric vehicles and those bought by a large family. Many people who have received the

government grant are unaware that the 1,000 or 750 Euros has to be declared in the 'Renta' (income tax return). If this happened in 2015 it has to be declared in the current income tax declaration due before June 30th.

Expensive Electricity A price comparison by the EU body 'Eurostat' (but dating from prices in the second quarter of 2015) states that the cost of electricity in Spain was the fifth highest of all EU countries. They took the price of 24 Euros per Mw/hr ( we explained what this is in an article last month) when the average price in other EU states was 21 Euros. In the same period, the cost in Denmark and Germany was 30 Euros, and in Ireland and Italy 24 Euros. In relation to the “spending power” of average consumers, they calculated that the relative cost in Spain was 27 Euros and the EU average 21 Euros. The extra cost of taxes including 21% IVA (VAT) in Spain is also quite high. Taxes in the countries with the highest cost of electricity are more than Spain and total 33% in France but only 5% in the UK. As we explained last month, the cost of energy in Spain so far this year came down substantially with the contribution of renewable energy sources such as wind power and hydro-electric dams. Any price comparisons will fluctuate as a result.

An EU Fine Spain has not achieved their target deficit figures for 2015 and the relevant ones for both 2016 & 2017 look likely to be downgraded. Unemployment, avoidance of taxes, and the black economy is stated to be partly responsible. The EU is proposing to fine Spain for not achieving these targets so the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy (in function until there is a new Spanish government) wrote to Jean Claude Junquer head of the EU commission to try to stop this. He pointed out the achievements made in the last few years to combat the deficit and asked for an extended period of 12 months to achieve the EU targets. The lack of a Spanish Government since last December, with new General Elections on June 26this also a reason why the economy is suffering. The proposed fine (unless it is squashed) was to be approved on June 17th and an amount of two billion

'Algarrobico' The Spanish word “Algarrobico” is completely fixed in people's minds as relating to the hotel saga in Carboneras. Recently another matter emerged in relation to Vera where they have a park: El Parque del Algarrobico. This park is very popular with a large children's playground put in just over twelve months ago and over the years a lot of money has been spent on it by Vera town hall. The problem that has emerged is that it may be privately owned! In 2003, the land was given to the council by the developer 'Key Mare' to be used for the general benefit of the community, where the park project was undertaken. It now appears that the land was mortgaged by 'Key Mare' who subsequently went into liquidation and another debtor is attempting to auction it to recover their 'Key Mare' debt. This came to light after the internet company www.concursalesonline.com featured the land on their website as being for sale by auction. Investigations have started in Vera to examine all the paperwork relating to 2003, establish the legalities, and hopefully stop any auction!

No Compensation The toll road from Vera to Cartagena was opened 12 years ago with anticipated traffic levels in the boom construction years that have never been achieved. The predicted 7,000 vehicles per day have only totalled 3,000 at the height of summer and a maximum of 2,000 during the rest of the year. The private group of companies 'Aucosta' that built the toll road at a cost of 650 million Euros led by the company 'FCC' are now in bankruptcy. It has emerged that only 200 of the 394 owners of land that was compulsory purchased in Almería province have received compensation. These land owners are spread between Antas, Vera, Cuevas, and Pulpí. Andrés Avila is a lawyer in Pulpí who is leading claims for compensation for the vast majority of these land owners. The compensation offered is considered too little and he claims that of the land owners who have been compensated the amount that they accepted was in many cases just so they received

some money. He says that in any disputed claims for compensation of this type, less than 30% of land owners consider they have been short-changed, but in this case 60% are in dispute with the offered amount. A tribunal that rules on amounts of compensation has doubled the amounts offered in many cases and interest is added, but there has still not been a general pay-out. After a court case in 2014 the Spanish High Court ruled that central government funds had to be used to pay land compensation claims where the builders of toll roads were in liquidation.

Pulpí Turtles Last year, a turtle came to Pulpí and laid 100 eggs on the beach. These were taken away to be put in incubators and reared. 30 baby turtles were hatched and the first 12 were brought back to Pulpí and released into the sea on June 16th which was World Marine Turtle day. The remaining baby turtles will be released when their size is considered ideal. Some of these turtles have been fitted with a satellite location device glued to their shells to see where they go. Local school children and various dignitaries went to see this release. In theory, the turtles will return to the same beach where they entered the sea to lay their own eggs eventually. A large number of turtles have been released on beaches in the Cabo de Gata area in recent years and the time when female turtles come to lay their eggs is between June and July.

Ángel Ron, their CEO, states that the injection of cash is a better option than any fusion and now is not the right time to consider this as bank interest rates and mortgage interest are at an all time low.

Mojácar New Regulations The Mojácar town council have approved regulations relating in part, to dress in the street in summer, with all other councillors voting against some of these regulations. One of them bans parties of young people on stag or hen holidays from having inflatable blow-up devices including large penises in the street that are seen as being contrary to public decency. One of the regulations that opposition councillors partly objected to is that people in the street cannot wear beach attire such as bikinis, men cannot be bare chested, and they have to cover up before coming onto the street. Opposition councillors stated that for people going straight from a beachfront hotel or back, this was not logical, or a problem, and they should not be fined as a result. Skateboarding in the street is also banned unless at an approved location. Fines from 300-1,000 Euros can be levied by the local police.

'Galasa' Loan Last month we commented on the current problems of 'Galasa' who supply the vast quantity of water in this regions. Their electricity was cut off in various places in May by 'Endesa' the electrical supply company for unpaid debts. The Almería Diputación (county council) is the major shareholder and they have agreed to make 'Galasa' a loan of 1.9 million Euros to tide them over. All political parties agreed to the loan but it was stressed that a viable plan for the continuance of the private company has to be found.

'Greenpeace' In Court The promoter and builder of the Algarrobico hotel in Carboneras, Azata del Sol, were claiming 200,000 Euros in compensation for damage done by Greenpeace activists when they painted an enormous circle in black paint that covered 8,000 square metres on the front of the almost finished hotel in May

2014. Of the estimated 100 activists there are 28 that have been identified and have made statements in courts as far afield as Madrid, Antequera (Málaga), Granada, Pontevedra, and Zaragoza. The defacement was done a month and a half after the High Court of Andalucía ruled that the hotel was legal. Activists so far questioned in courts are relying on the latest ruling from the Spanish High Court that the hotel is not legal and will be demolished. The judge has ruled that the case cannot go ahead, as with the demolition order in place the developers cannot prove that they suffered financial loss.

Big Brother As part of a court case, the Spanish Supreme Court has issued guidelines that relate to a computer tool 'Sitel' for security forces to intercept telephone conversations. First tested in 2001, it has been in use since 2004. This applies to calls and SMS messages and put simply, a phone is converted into a microphone and incoming calls even if not answered can activate the recording. This has come as a big surprise to many people! The court decision related to “ambient sound” so conversations in the same location as the phone being tapped. Five members of a drug ring were sent to prison and appealed their sentences in 2015 with regard to the 'Sitel' system as being illegal and an infringement of their human rights. One of them claimed that a conversation with his six year old son had been recorded before he answered an incoming call. The court set up various guidelines and security services or the police have to obtain a court order that can include their right to monitor “ambient sound”.

500 Euro Notes The Central European Bank has announced that new 500 Euro notes will cease to be issued at the end of 2018. Existing notes in circulation will continue to be legal currency. The date of 2018 has been chosen as “Series 2” 100 and 200 Euro notes with increased security will be issued then. 500 Euro notes were given the nickname “Bin Laden” in the years when no-body knew where he was! Focus on Local News to rise, and Spain already has figures much greater than the EU average, the US, and the UK. So far this year, if donations continue to rise it is likely to exceed 2015 figures by 11 %. Donations of lungs has gone up 30% and heart and kidney transplants by 6%. In the last 12 months, 120 people on dialysis have received a transplant out of the waiting list of 675 and some of the recipients of a kidney have been in dialysis for 10 years. It is quite possible that 2016 figures will show that there have been 42 donations per 1 million head of the population, and a figure of 40 donations was the target for 2020. Part of the success is due to the medical staff in accident and emergency units who certify a death due to heart failure, with the relatives immediately being asked if they are prepared to authorize donations if the dead person has not already indicated they want this to happen. Transplant co-ordinators are only brought in when a death has been legally certified by three doctors and there is only a few hours delay if that, before funeral arrangements can be made.

Train Discontent The pressure group “Mesa del Tren” pushing for better trains from Almería city to anywhere else in Spain are continuing with their protests. Almería city is 563 kms from the Madrid terminus and the fastest possible journey time is 6 hrs 3 mins. The Minister for , Ana Pastor (in function), is stating that progress on other 'AVE' lines such as the section from Lugo in Galicia to Madrid has the highest priority at present. This journey time using part of the 'AVE' (High Speed Train) line has been reduced from 9 hrs to just over 6 hrs. The 'AVE' line from Madrid to Girona is 721 kms total but the journey time has been cut down to 3 hrs 18 mins. The Almería pressure group consider it is vital that the 'AVE' comes to Almería city by or before 2020. Ana Pastor has promised that a section near Granada will be converted to a hybrid train line that can cope with European and Spanish track widths so using part of the 'AVE' track will cut the time down from Almería to Madrid. At another meeting, the train companies stated that alterations in the timetables would save 20-40 minutes journey time which was easy to do. The Almería rail pressure groups promptly asked why this had not been done before if it was so easy! It was agreed that some of

the speed limits that are spread over 80 sections could be eliminated. Any promises assume that following the General Elections on June 26ththere will be no change in plans by whoever becomes Minister for Transport.

Less Usage Persons in Almería province are the least users in Andalucía of internet facilities according to a survey by the Andalucían Department of Science and Technology. They say that 70% of people in the province have internet connected at home compared to 80% in Málaga and the average in Andalucía of 75%. As regards connection via mobile phones, 86% have internet access, also lower than the average. 75% of people in the province connect to the internet a minimum of 5 times a week and the vast majority use it for messages or contact and 47% put information to be shared on social media sites such as facebook or the web. 70% use the internet for obtaining news and 50% of people who buy goods are purchasing sports goods or clothes. Another 40% of this category book accommodation for holidays. In Spain as a whole, it is stated that at the end of 2015 there were 4 million homes without internet access and 8 million people had never used a computer. 25% of the total population were not regular users of the internet by any access method. In all of Andalucía there were 750,000 homes without internet.

New Radar Cameras The 'DGT' Spanish traffic police have started using the new radar cameras that will detect drivers and passengers not wearing seat belts, children not seated in the required safety seats, drivers using mobile phones, or motorbike users not wearing helmets. Ten such radars have been installed initially in Almería province all on secondary roads where the most accidents occur. These radars are not checking the speed of vehicles which the normal radar cameras will continue to do, and these new cameras are mobile so their location can be moved. The traffic police in Almería say that in 38% of fatalities last year, drivers or passengers were not wearing seat belts that could have saved lives. Focus on Local News introduced, a total of 23,000 people in Almería province have been fined for non-use of seat belts or child safety seats. The police say that if there is a frontal collision with one vehicle travelling at 80 km/hr with no seat belts being used, death or serious injury will almost certainly take place. The head of the traffic police in Almería, José María Méndez, says that persons using mobile phones whilst driving have the same chances of being involved in an accident as someone who is over the limit and drivers who have hands-free mobile facilities can still be distracted from driving correctly and their reaction time in the event of an impending accident is worse than normal. The new cameras are designed to take 50 images every second that should show the circumstances of drivers and passengers in most cases. The fine for not wearing a seat belt or using child restraints or mobile phones is 200 Euros and a loss of three points. Drivers are responsible for passengers not wearing seat belts as they may not have a driving licence.

The Níjar Dry Port The Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) has given the green light for the construction of a “dry port” logistical centre for goods at Níjar. The total area will eventually be 287 hectares (just over 1 sq mile) with an initial area of 174 hectares. The projected cost is 37 million Euros of which 33 million will come from the Junta and it is intended that the first phase will give employment to 3,400 persons. The area chosen is near to the A7 motorway, near the 'AVE' (high speed train line), and about equidistant from the ports of Almería, Carboneras, Garrucha, and the airport. It is intended that warehouses will be built with areas for containers and a service area for transport drivers. The second phase will be started when there are more concrete plans for the continuation of the 'AVE' rail line. Other similar logistic centres in Andalucía have resulted in a saving of between 7-12% on normal transport costs. Córdoba, Málaga and Seville already have centres of this type in operation.

Still Hunting the Tiger

ast October we featured the “Asian Tiger” mosquito whose Latin name is “Aedes Albopictus”. It has a black body with white stripes and is larger than the “common mosquito”. Apart from nasty bites it can carry exotic diseases and a man living in Valencia became very ill as a result in July 2015.

Puerto Rey and Pueblo Laguna are favourite spots where there is stagnant water, and nine zones have been identified so special eradication treatment has been carried out in these areas. This treatment is to try and control the rise in numbers but it is almost impossible to completely kill them off. There have been good results in the fishing port at Almería where an extended We stated in our article that special health treatment bore results. personnel were stopping motorists and using a suction device that looks like a hair-dryer as these mosquitoes are particularly attracted to CO2 gas that is of a higher level in older cars. Motorists and passengers can be bitten on their lower legs and ankles if a mosquito has got into their vehicle. This type of mosquito is not just a hazard in summer months, they are still active all year round if the weather is hot, but to a lesser extent. To chart the spread of these mosquitoes, a smartphone App was set up that has now been re-named “Mosquito Alert”. This can be downloaded and people who think they have seen tiger mosquitoes upload a photograph that is studied by eight etymologists at a central location. Frederic Bartumeus is their director and good photos of mosquitoes are examined to see if they look like the Tiger variety. The results can be classified as “positive”, “possible”, or a normal mosquito. If it is determined that a good photo of a Tiger mosquito has been sent in this is entered on a map at www. webserver.mosquitoaler t.com/es and health officials are alerted.

The Tiger mosquitoes seek out places where there is some water, extending from irrigation systems for gardens to stagnant water and swimming pools. Female mosquitoes lay their eggs, that can be as many as 100, on the surface of water and the eggs turn into larvae underwater very quickly. In the course of a week they can double their size and, depending on the water temperature, they become a pupa for a period of 2-4 days. When the mosquitoes emerge they are ready to fly away once their bodies have dried out, and the whole cycle starts again. Take Care in the Sun

uring the summer, many people go to the beach and soak up the sun thinking that if they don't get a tan they look as if they have stayed at home. A good tan is not however an indication of looking after yourself. The problem is that cancer of the skin is very common and applies to one out of every six people throughout their life. Tumours known as “Melanoma” are a severe form of skin cancer that can spread to other parts of the body when they “metastasise” and can be fatal. If treated early enough, 95% of skin cancers can be cured, but with the melanoma tumours the survival rate over ten years is only 40%. So how can we stop this? Skin specialists say that a person should not be in full sunlight between 12 noon and 4pm, and should always use a minimum of factor 30 sunscreen products that should be topped up every two hours or after going in the sea. They say that we should wear a cap or sunshade to protect our faces and sunglasses and children should be well covered up as the risk of developing skin cancer is much higher if there is severe sunburn in infancy. Using a sunscreen product over factor 30 does not stop you getting a tan, but the time the sunscreen lasts is longer. All sunscreen products must have protection against UV rays A & B. People's complexion determines how their skin burns in very strong sunshine and those that are very white-skinned can burn in as little as 10 minutes. For people with a darker skin, burning may not occur before 20-25 minutes, but no-one should spend more than 30 minutes without using sunscreen products. People with red hair can become sunburnt more easily and persons of African origin who have a black skin can still develop sunburns. Problems from over exposure include short term burning, skin problems such as an urticaria rash, wrinkling not due to age, and skin looking blotchy. Specialists point out that protection against sunburn and skin cancer is not just when we are at a beach. Walking around with parts of the body exposed

during strong sunlight is just as dangerous and sunscreen products should still be applied. The use of tanning machines is considered very unwise, as is taking part in any outdoor sport over several hours unless protected. Diet helps and eating fruit and vegetables rich in antitoxins is recommended along with drinking plenty of water.

When severe sunburn occurs and itching, this is the body telling us that there has been damage done, and if there is a brown spot that is getting larger you should see your doctor. In provinces such as Almería, the potential for problems is much higher than in northern Spain. It used to be considered that a good tan showed that a person was really healthy but this is erroneous because it usually applied to people who didn't work, socialised a lot, and were in the public eye. The reverse is true, and anyone who has a heavy tan is going to suffer eventually. Trying to develop a really good tan in just a few days of a holiday is a very bad idea! Statistics over the last few years show that melanoma cancer occurs in 10 out of every 10,000 people in a very sunny climate, but two of these will die. Most skin cancers can be cured with early treatment but prevention is much better than needing remedial treatment.

So Now You Know... Plimsoll Lines In the 1850s, the loss of cargo ships was causing great concert and a parliamentary committee was set up to find a solution. In 1870, Samuel Plimsoll, an MP from Derby, headed a campaign that ships should have loading levels indicating a safe cargo, but a bill was defeated in the House of Commons in 1875. Samuel Plimsoll published a book, “Our Seamen”, warning of the dangers, but there was still opposition from cargo ship owners. A law passed in 1876 obliged the owners to paint lines on the ship, but with no real obligation as to the actual position. In 1890, the Board of Trade stated where the lines had to be put for different cargoes and sea conditions and the campaigning from Samuel Plimsoll was put into action.

The Breathalyser The first reliable breathalyser was invented by Dr Emil Bogan in Los Angeles in the 1920s. He found that alcohol in blood related to air expelled, and invented a device like a football bladder with two chemicals inside. Alcohol changed the yellow lining to blue or green and the colour was compared to tubes with the same chemicals and different amounts of alcohol added. Dr. Rolla Harga, a biochemist at Indiana University, invented his version in 1938 that was a basic improvement and a self-contained machine and the Indiana police adopted it. Within a few years other US police were using it and it widely became known as a “Drunkometer” after a policeman jokingly gave it this name and it stuck.

Drawing Pins The US inventor Edwin Moore invented a “push pin” in 1900 and formed a company, but they were pins with a small handle to hold and intended to hold drawings or documents on a wall board. With plastic “handles” and other products his company still exists today. German clockmaker Johann Kirsten invented his “thumb tack” in 1904 with a flat head so that they could be used for fixing paper sheets anywhere without anything sticking up. A general name for them in England became “brass tacks” leading to the expression, “getting down to brass tacks”. “Drawing pins” referred to engineering drawings or other sheets of paper fixed to a sloping board. A domed head stops dropped drawing pins from pointing up.

The Largest Parrots The “Hyacinth Macaw” is a parrot native to central and eastern South America found in Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay, and from its beak to the tip of its long tail can measure 100 centimetres. It is the largest of the macaw species of parrots and any other parrot that can fly, and weighs up to 1.8 kilos so 4 lbs. They live mostly on nuts and their extremely strong beak can break open a coconut to get at the milk. They use bits of branches to trap the nuts. They are very even tempered and are called “gentle giants”. The “Kakapo” parrot found in New Zealand can weigh up to 3.5 kilos so nearly 8 lbs and is by far the heaviest parrot that can be found but is a non-flying species, often called an “owl” parrot as it is nocturnal.

Penicillin Ancient Egyptians are known to have pressed mouldy bread onto infected wounds but penicillin, the first true antibiotic, was not discovered until 1928 almost by accident. Alexander Fleming, a Scottish scientist, was working at St Mary's hospital in London and after returning from a short holiday found some mould growing on a dish he had been using to cultivate bacteria. Before throwing the dish away he realized that the bacteria had died. He tested the mould that turned out to be Penicillin Notatum, a fairly rare type. He had great problems in isolating pure penicillin from it but two scientists from the school of pathology at Oxford University helped him to do this and in 1945 they shared the Nobel Prize for medicine.

Electric Organs The harmonium or reed organ was a keyboard instrument where sound was produced by blowing air over a set of reeds, and foot bellows provided the air. The first electric organs had motor operated bellows to provide the air, but the sound was very similar. In the 1930s, experiments started on producing a “tonewheel” organ where rapidly spinning magnetic toothed wheels produced tones that were amplified to a loudspeaker. In 1934, the US Hammond organ became the first commercially produced product. These effectively killed reed organs. The new ones had a pedal that could make the sound louder or quieter. Later improvements with up to 3 keyboards rivalled traditional pipe organs in small churches.

Older Cars

he 'DGT' Spanish traffic police keep stressing that older cars are more dangerous than new ones but any solution is extremely difficult. The traffic department in AlmerĂa city state that of the 487,000 registered vehicles in the province, 326,000 are ten or more years old, that is 67%, and 34% of all vehicles (so 165,000) are more than fifteen years old.

a serious concern if there is an accident, but does not strictly relate to older vehicles, but traffic police say that someone who has an old vehicle is more likely to have no insurance. The other concern is that older vehicles do not have the same safety features as newer vehicles as regards air-bags, 'ABS' brakes or crumple zones in a frontal collision. Unless people do swap older vehicles for new ones this is a state of affairs that will continue.

This means the average age of vehicles is eleven years, the same as in 2014 but much higher than in 2008 before the construction and financial crisis. This is no surprise as people who lost their jobs, or companies that ran short of work weren't able to replace their vehicles even if they wanted to. Agricultural companies that felt the squeeze were experiencing similar problems that extended to the purchase of lorries and agricultural equipment. People who needed some transport bought the much cheaper scooters and second hand ones if they could. One of the traffic police preoccupations is that vehicles are not being taken for their 'ITV' (MOT) test and all registered owners are sent a reminder with the central booking number. From the number of vehicles that are supposed to have been tested that didn't turn up it is thought that about 20,000 don't have a valid 'ITV'. This raises concerns as to the mechanical condition that can result in an accident as, if vehicles are regularly tested, they should be relatively safe. The fine for not having an 'ITV' test and paperwork is 200 Euros, so 100 Euros if paid within 20 days, and there are no driver points deducted. This is because with company vehicles there is no physical person to lose points, so some vehicle owners risk being caught because they only have to part with 100 Euros. Fixed radar cameras can now tie up a registration number with 'ITV' records and the lack of a current test certificate is flagged.

A new system has been introduced relating to the contamination from CO2 gases and pollution and drivers are being sent a sticker that they have to display similar to the 'ITV' sticker. Basically, electric vehicles or hybrid vehicles will have a blue sticker if they only operate in a range of 40kms. The same vehicles that can operate over a wider range or are powered by liquid gas will have a blue/green sticker. Cars and vans with petrol engines first registered since 2006, or diesel ones after 2014 will be sent a green 'C' sticker, but if first registered from 2000-2006 (petrol) or 20062014 (diesel) a distinctive yellow 'B' sticker. What sticker there might be for the extremely old vehicles has not yet been decided! Red? It is being proposed for consideration that the oldest vehicles Another concern is that drivers do not have might pay more town hall road tax, or have limits insurance and up to the end of May, the AlmerĂa on circulation in large cities. Another organization, 'Country Brand Index', with figures from 2104-2015 put Spain at number 22 in a list of 118 countries with Japan, Canada, Switzerland, and Sweden topping the list, but 2016 anticipated figures are expected to put Spain higher up. Of the 68 million tourists who came to Spain last year more than 50% came from the UK, France, and Germany in this order and tourists from Italy and the Low Countries were next in the list. The other side of the coin is that some places in Spain are struggling to cope with the numbers and in particular the Balearic islands, the Canaries, Catalonia, and to a lesser extent Andalucía and

Vincent Torres, their head of tourism, says that this puts pressure on water supplies, traffic, and police forces where everything may be stretched to the limit. This year they will restrict vehicle access to some beach areas and the National Park and dramatically increase urban transport. What’s On Concerts Almería India Martínez, a Spanish flamenco style singer from Córdoba who has achieved international fame, is in concert at the Olympic Games Palace in Almería city on July 1st at 9.30pm. Tickets in advance are 25 or 30 Euros at the door. Her last concert in Almería was a sell out. Bertín Osborne comes to Almería city as part of his 2016 “Crooner” tour on July 2nd at 10pm at the Olympic Games Palace. He performs songs from Eric Clapton, Lionel Richie, Frank Sinatra and others. A Solidarity Concert for Jorge García takes place in Almería city on June 9th at 9pm, Auditorio Maestro Padilla, featuring the Almería young persons and infant choirs, and the infant choir from St George’s college in Roquetas, conducted by Michael Thomas and Salvador Esteve choral director. Circus Gran Circo Zampano circus won the award “Master of Magic” in 2014. It is a mix of mechanical devices, technology, old industrial development, and fantasy. (No Animals!). On July 28th they perform at Plaza de los Periodistas, Almería city, July 29th at Plaza del Mar El Toyo, and July 30th at Paseo Marítimo, Cabo de Gata. All performances start at 1pm with free admission.

Malú is one of the most famous Spanish pop singers with multi awards, international fame, platinum record sales, and Grammy awards. 'Pulpop 2016', the annual music festival will take place on July 8th and 9th at the Roquetas bullring. The musical Bollywood featuring Peña Serpentina comes to the Infanta Elena Auditorio on Saturday, July 23rd at 10pm. La Alfoquía Concert Spain's Premier Swing Band, 'The Troupers Swing Band' are coming to La Alfoquía on August 6th to perform in a charity event in aid of the local schools of Zurgena and the Harmony Community Support organization. PAWS Appeal The PAWS/PATAS animal charity was founded in 1989 and has helped with the re-housing of over 6,000 dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens. APSA, the Albox animal charity, has a new manageress, June, for its shop in Avenida Lepanto in Albox. She will be assisted by Maggie and they both hope to develop the shop to make much needed money to look after all the dogs in the kennels, help with neutering, and homing. Volunteers are needed in the shop which is open from Monday to Saturday opposite Olivers. Call in if you can help for a few hours, one day a week. The shop opening hours for July and August will be 9.30am to 1.30pm. Volunteers are also needed to help at the kennels and walk the dogs and you can talk to the girls at the APSA stall at Saturday's Los Llanos market. We desperately need

buckets for water for the dogs now the summer is here and pool chemical buckets are ideal; just drop them off at the shop or market. If you can help us in any way do please ring APSA on 663 762 642. Age Support Almanzora welfare team to help the elderly was founded in 2013 to provide services to people who need to borrow mobility aids, those recently bereaved, stroke-victims, people who are experiencing loneliness, those with serious health problems, or who are recently discharged from hospital - basically anyone who needs support! The charity assists with advice on accessing UK benefits such as attendance

allowance. Weekly visits may then follow to, “do the shopping, collect prescriptions, keep someone company, and generally provide emotional and practical support”. Vo l u n te e r s f r o m m a ny backgrounds offer a minimum of 2-3 hours a week, with training, and more volunteers are always needed. Two foreign immigrants have just arrived in the United States and one says to the other, "I hear that the people of this country actually eat dogs." "Odd," her companion replies, "but if we are going to live in America, we might as well do as the Americans do." Nodding emphatically, one of the immigrants points to a hot dog vendor and they both walk toward the cart. "Two dogs, please," she says. The vendor is only too pleased to oblige, wraps both hot dogs in foil and hands them over the counter. Excited, the companions hurry to a bench and begin to unwrap their "dogs." One of them opens the foil and begins to blush. Staring at it for a moment, she turns to her friend and whispers cautiously, "What part did you get?"

Man at Bed Time A husband and wife sleep in separate twin beds. One night he asks his wife to come over to his bed to fool around. On the way, she trips over the carpet and falls flat on her face. The husband looks up concerned and says, "Oh, did my little wifey fall on her little nosey wosey?" She laughs and gets in his bed. Afterwards she gets up to go back to her bed and falls over the rug again. Her husband looks over his shoulder to see her on the floor, rolls over and says, "Clumsy bitch."

My Love Dress A woman stopped by unannounced at her recently married son’s house. She rang the doorbell and walked in. She was shocked to see her daughter-in-law lying on the couch, totally naked. Soft music was playing and the aroma of perfume filled the room. “What are you doing?” she asked. “I’m waiting for my husband to come home from work,” the daughter-in-law said. “I am wearing my love dress.” “Love dress? But you’re naked!” said the motherin-law. “My husband loves me to wear this dress,” she explained. “It excites him to no end. Every time he sees me in this dress, he instantly becomes romantic and ravages me for hours on end. He can’t get enough of me.” The mother-in-law left. When she got home, she undressed, showered, put on her best perfume, dimmed the lights, put on a romantic CD, and lay on the couch waiting for her husband to arrive. Finally, her husband came home. He walked in and saw her lying there so provocatively. “What are you doing?” he asked. “This is my love dress” she whispered, sensually. “Needs ironing,” he said.

A man wakes up and finds himself alone in a hospital room with no recollection of how he got there. While pondering it, his bedside phone rings, and he answers it. A doctor on the other end identifies himself, and tells him, "I have really bad news. You're very sick. After your collapse yesterday, we ordered several tests, and got the results back this morning. I'm afraid you have Avian flu, Ebola, and you're positive for HIV and hepatitis." Stunned, the man asks "Well, what's next!? What are you going to do?" The doc replies, "Well, for starters, we're putting you on a strict diet of only pizza." The patient asks: "Will that really help me, doctor?" "No", the doc responds. "But it's all we can fit under the door."

Daryl & Gomer Bubba dies in a fire and his body is pretty badly burned. The morgue sends for his two best friends, Daryl and Gomer, to identify the body. Daryl arrives first, and when the mortician pulls back the sheet, Daryl says, "Yup, his face is burnt up pretty bad. You better roll him over." The mortician rolls him over, and Daryl says, "Nope, ain't Bubba." The mortician thinks this is strange. Then he brings Gomer in to identify the body. Gomer takes a look at the face and says, "Yup, he's pretty well burnt up. Roll him over." The mortician rolls him over and Gomer says, "No, it ain't Bubba." The mortician asks, "How can you tell?" Gomer said, "Well, Bubba had two a**holes." "What? He had two assholes?!" exclaims the mortician. "Yup, every time we went to town, folks would say, 'Here comes Bubba with them two assholes.'"
