The “Dreambeach Villaricos” festival is probably the largest single event in August, taking place on August 9th-10th on the site of the previous “Creamfields” festival. Tickets are still available, but not of course free in this case! Julio Iglesias at Roquetas on July 13th, along with Alejandro Sanz in Almería city on July 27th are “big names” and entry prices reflect this too.

Summer events include of course, beach activities, markets on promenades and street performers. The dredging of the Carboners port has meant that Garrucha has received 15,000 cubic metres of sand for beach regeneration and Mojácar some 7,000 cubic metres, spread between several beaches. EU “Blue flags” or the Spanish “Q” for quality flags are eagerly awaited at an assortment of beaches. Vera council announced on June 25th that all the considerable array of damage to roads, bridges, sewage, water and other services from the terrible September 28th floods had been fully repaired. Stemming from the intense rainfall and land drain the same day, the Cuevas reservoir went from being almost dry to just below full capacity. Taking advantage of this, ‘Galasa’, the water supplier started using this new source of water. Considerable controversy and worries followed in June when the water was pronounced “unfit to drink or cook with”, as long term harmful chemicals were present. We explain this in a following article.

If residents and tourists wondered what fiesta was being celebrated late on the evening of Saturday, June 22nd, UD Almería football club had beaten Girona 3-0. This meant that they went back into the first division after two years of relegation. The fireworks, cheers and car horns were celebrating this triumph. It is anticipated that substantial revenue will follow on, with as much as 18 million euros flowing in from televised match fees. The Mediterranean Games Stadium in Almería was packed to capacity with a crowd of over 15,000. As regards more humble events, the Almería Diputación (County Council) are subsidising 90 different entertainment and cultural groups or artistes in events spread over the summer, available at request for any municipality with less then 10,000 people. July 16th is an important fiesta in coastal areas, celebrating the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen. Statues of the Virgin (Mary) of Carmen are taken out to sea on fishing boats to ask for protection from bad weather in the coming year and good catches. August 15th is a “red” religious fiesta day throughout Spain with the usual official offices and town halls shut, and Almería city follows this with their annual “feria”, something for everybody including bull fights. Mojácar has a three day event at the end of August to celebrate the saint’s day of San Agustin, one of their patron saints, on August 28th. Editor’s note. Focus on Local News The Iron Ore Saga As we have previously reported, the company Minas de Alquife S.L. are going to re-open the abandoned iron ore mines that used the famous ‘Cable Inglés’ loading bay at Almería port to discharge the iron ore into ships. The excavation of the iron ore (now much more valuable than when the mines were abandoned), is intended to start in 2015 with a planned output of 4 million tonnes in 2017. Almería council is completely opposed to the iron ore coming to the port again by rail; partly because when the mines were last operational a “red mist” allegedly covered the port area. The Spanish arm of the Dutch company have gone to Madrid to plead their case, saying that the use of Almería port is the only logical plan after extracting the iron ore. They claim that in a few months they will submit plans for the conveying and discharge of the iron ore that will satisfy any objections. The company say they will invest 200 million euros in the project between 2014-2017 with the immediate creation of 350 jobs, and an “indirect” labour force of 1,500 further jobs.

Spanish State Port Minister, Trinidad Cabeo, in charge of the Almería port authority, and other interested dignitaries. Up until now, the major quay in use was exclusively for ‘Endesa’ who run the power station. The new independent extensions allow for ships of 100,000 tonnes to berth, instead of the previous maximum of 7,000 tons. The cost involved, amounting to 18 million euros, has been defrayed by an EU grant of 80% of the cost, whilst the other 20% has come from the Almería port authority. The port is now able to import and export bulk materials such as marble by-products, sand and gravel, general merchandise and liquid products. It is anticipated that major companies will now build facilities in Carboneras and the proposed large “dry port” area to be built in Nijar province will also be a major client of the Carboneras port. Estimates for new employment suggest that 300 new jobs will be created, and an additional income of 50-80 million euros will be generated.

Still Prison Term! The former mayor of Cantoria, Pedro Llamas, has had a prison sentence of 2 years upheld by the Supreme Tribunal of Andalucía. The appeals court reduced the period he is banned from holding any public office to a total of 23 months. Pedro Llamas allowed the building of 4 houses on land he owned which was not zoned for urban development as it was in a “special protection area”. He later provided a certified and stamped document from the town hall, signed by himself, denying he had given permission for the connection of services. The Supreme Court stated that this was patently false. A compensation order against the developers was made for the 4 British owners of the properties, but the lawyer representing Pedro Llamas has stated that they intend to appeal against the sentence again. Pedro Llamas bowed to pressure from the Cantoria council and resigned as mayor and councillor on June 24th, but claimed he had “a clear conscience”.

After a 3-0 victory against Girona on June 23rd the ‘UD Almería’ football team ascended to first division level once more alongside Barcelona and Real Madrid. For the last two seasons they had been relegated to the second division. With Almería playing an almost textbook display of technique and determination, the Girona team could find no strategy to stop Almería, nor any way of scoring a goal themselves. Refusing Inheritances In Spain, a beneficiary in a will has the option of going to a notary and signing away their inheritance. With the present economic crisis this number is going up throughout Spain, but in a higher percentage in Andalucía including Almería province. If parents or relatives who die are in a poor economic situation with more debts than assets, the inheritors can legally refuse the specified inheritance. This makes it impossible for creditors or bank loans debts to be passed down. Since 2007, the number of rejections of an inheritance throughout Spain has increased on average by 100%, but in Andalucía by 150%. Of the 36,000 wills dealt with in Andalucía during 2012 some 10% were formally refused. Notaries stress that detailed financial advice should be sought before this step is taken, particularly if there are various inheritors. Having decided on this course of action it is a simple matter to carry out at any notary.

Paca García

Since June 12th , Paca García, born on September 13th , 1901, in Jaén province in Andalucía is not only still the oldest living person in Spain, but is now 31st in the list of the oldest known persons in the world. This followed the death of a Japanese woman who was aged 116 and 2 months. Paca is now aged 111 and has lived in a residential home in Navarra since 2007. She still has all her faculties and likes talking about her childhood and life. Her only remaining daughter (Paca as well) is now aged 68. All the other 30 persons older than her are women, but the 32nd oldest is an American man James McCoulbrey. In the last confirmed figures for 2011 from the Spanish Institute of Statistics there were 8,700 persons living in Spain aged over 100. Two thirds of these are Mojácar Court Ruling women. Lost Driving Licences Despite the EU equality ruling that women cannot be charged less insurance amounts than men, the statistics still prove that women have less accidents, less fatalities and lose their licence to drive considerably less than men. The ‘Mapfre’ insurance group have analyzed accident statistics and male drivers under the age of 40 are 5 times more likely to be killed than women in the same group. The principle cause of death for males between the ages of 11 and 40 is traffic accidents. Surprisingly perhaps, male pedestrians are 4 times more likely to be killed than women, put down to the fact that men are more impetuous and less careful even as pedestrians. Of the 2,400 people who have lost their driving licence in Almería province since 2006, there are only 139 female drivers. In Andalucía as a whole, some 92% of drivers who have lost all their points are men.

Foreign Buyers The Spanish government initiative to attract nonEU buyers has now been formalized. Persons from countries such as Russia and China, the countries where it is thought there are the most potential buyers, can obtain a residence permit for 2 years. This is in return for a purchase, or purchases of property or land that exceeds 500,000 euros. This new residence permit does not come with any right to work, nor to receive health benefits or education rights. The aim is that these persons no longer have to renew their normal 90 day visas from a Spanish consulate in their native country. The 500,000 euros amount can be built up over a period of time, not just from a single or linked transaction all at one go.

Major Mortgage Change The Spanish government and courts have been forced to respond to the increasing problems of eviction for mortgage or loan arrears. On May 9th, the Supreme Court ruled that the minimum interest clauses, known as “suelos”, could be illegal if buried in the small print or regarded as abusive. Many banks slipped in a clause where although the interest rates were the “Euribor” amount, (now at the lowest ever) plus their own interest rate of 1% so totalling 1.5% at present, there was a minimum rate of interest, perhaps 3.5%. On June 12th , the written judgement of the court was sent to all banks and financial institutions. The very large ‘Cajamar’ bank based in Almería province, now called ‘Cajamar Caja Rural’ announced the next day that all their minimum interest clauses were being withdrawn for all mortgage holders, and an immediate refund was being made, backdated to May 9th. The ‘BBVA’ bank followed suit. Banks will therefore lose large amounts

Focus on Local News continued to Southampton. There is a dedicated terminal known as “Southampton Fruit Terminal” that already handles a very large amount of imported fruit for all of the UK. Apart from the ease at which horticultural products from Almería can now reach the UK, an immense amount of road transport (particularly to French ports) will become obsolete. Southampton is a thriving UK port in private majority owned Arabian hands. This plan was first suggested at the Madrid “Fruit Attraction” fair last autumn where both the Almería port and fruit exporters had a stand, along with the Southampton port and fruit importers. Garrucha & Mojácar Sand

Longer Prison Term

The deep dredging of the Carboneras port that was causing a problem for large ships has resulted in Garrucha receiving 15,000 cubic metres of sand, and Mojácar 7,000. Another beach at Carboneras also had a facelift. The 1.5 million euros dredging project was started in mid-June so that the beaches could subsequently be made ready for the July tourists. The fierce storms at the end of April left Garrucha seriously short of sand, but the work at Carboneras and the re-generation of the Garrucha beaches had already been organized. Once the sand has been received, Garrucha town hall will start work on essential ser vices on the new beaches.

In August 2011, a boat carrying illegal immigrants was intercepted off the coast of Almería. 54 people were on board from 17 distinct nearby countries including 7 minors. Two young men were on board to pilot the boat with a GPS navigation system and they set off from Morocco. The passengers had paid 500 -1,500 euros to criminal elements considered part of a “mafia” type organization. When in court, the prosecution services were unable to prove how much money the two navigators had obtained, and they were given a prison sentence of 4 years each. On appeal over the “light” sentence the Supreme Tribunal of Andalucía doubled the prison terms, considering it a very serious offence to have included 7 children as passengers, who were “at great risk”.

Focus on Local News continued further despondency regarding the ‘AVE’ (High speed train) and the Murcia to Almería link. In this document dated last April the proposal is that the expenditure of 1,495 million euros, including 1,265 million for the Lorca to Almería link is delayed until after 2018. ‘ADIF’, the rail entity that prepared the document immediately stated that it was a “discussion” document only, intended for internal use by technicians and planners, and was not a fixed plan! The date of 2018 is given as the date when the Murcia-Lorca link will be finished, but with both stations on the surface, and not underground as both cities hoped. The document also suggests that EU funds for the Murcia-Almería route could be switched to help finance the Algeciras-Granada ‘AVE’ line. ‘ADIF’ went on to state after the emergence of this document, that decisions had already been taken that were not reflected in the proposals from last April. There is now a new ‘AVE’ line from Alicante, greatly reducing the journey time to Madrid or Barcelona.

The winning two people representing Spain, a man and a woman, were invited to go to Orlando in the US for final tests. One of these will definitely be selected as part of the final 21 multinational astronaut team.

Best May Ever Although not perhaps applicable in Almería province, according to local businesses, the month of May was a record one. 5.8 million foreign tourists came to Spain during May, some 7.4% up on last year. In the period up to and including May 2013 the total was 19.8 million throughout Spain, again up on 2012. These figures were also better than 2008 which was a record year before the bubble burst. UK and French tourists made up the vast majority, with a large increase in Russian tourists as well. The Spanish Ministry of Industry is starting a campaign to try and increase the number of Spanish holiday makers journeying to other parts of Spain, instead of trips to other destinations outside Spain.

Anti-Fire 2013 Plan The 2013 “Plan Infoca” for the prevention and extinction of forest and scrubland fires has been presented for Almería. 20.4 million euros is allocated of which 11 million is for forest and land clearance. The use of barbecues in open land, fires to burn vegetation waste, and the prohibition of motor vehicles in forest area is now in force until October 15th. Almería province has a total of 500 people employed either full time or part time to carry out preventive maintenance work or fight fires.

Windsurfing Aspirations Flying High Fran Parra, born in Cuevas del Almanzora, very nearly became selected as an astronaut for the US “Axe Apollo Space Academy-Tourists in Space” project that is scheduled for 2014. Fran is a 32 year old astrophysicist now based in Granada, who has been fascinated by space since a child and chose space related studies as his career. He was told of the competition to select potential astronauts by a friend

Victor Fernández from El Ejido is hoping that this year he can win the World Windsurfing Competition that he won in 2010. Lat year he was plagued by injury, but states he is now fully recovered. The event starts in the Canary Islands on July 9th and then goes to Tenerife in August. In September, the Danish resort of Klitmoller is the 3rd venue, followed by Germany, Chile and a final event in Cape Town. Victor Fernandéz is patronised by the El Ejido council

He has also taken part in three specialised films depicting his event, the latest one entitled “Below the surface”.

Cheaper ‘Viagra’ Along with the UK, the 1998 patent and licence to solely manufacture and supply ‘Viagra’ in Spain ended on June 22nd. Other laboratories and drug companies immediately launched their alternatives using the drug ‘Sildenafil’, the principle ingredient. Originally developed as a remedy for hypertension in heart arteries, the use for erectile dysfunction was soon discovered and marketed as such. In Spain in 2012 it is estimated that sales were in excess of 30 million euros. The manufacturer ‘Pfizer’ is stated to have achieved sales world wide of 1.5 billion euros. The use of ‘Viagra’ for erectile dysfunction has never been available on prescription in Spain, but the original tablets are expected to come down dramatically in price, as has happened in other countries where the patent has expired, apart from all the new alternatives. The marketing and use of ‘Viagra’ is considered to be as important as the contraceptive pill, not available in Spain until 1978. ‘Pfizer’ have announced they are intending to market a feminine ‘Viagra’ version, with the aim of reducing problems following the menopause, once it is fully tested.

Property Expropriations The Andalucían regulation enabling the expropriation of a property where families in distinct circumstances are faced with eviction has already resulted in the starting of proceedings regarding 2 properties, one each in Vera and Almería city. Another 5 such expropriations are in the pipeline. Families where this has been carried out can remain in the property for a period of three years, at a peppercorn rent, and the banks who own the properties receive a yearly amount of compensation from the Junta de Andalucía. Various offices throughout Andalucía were set up last October to deal with appeals for help from families in imminent danger of eviction. 368 family groups asked for help and advice, and after mediation some 246 were able to stay in their properties and stave off eviction.

Summer Events The Almería Diputación (County council) have published their summer event catalogue of artists that municipalities with less then 10,000 inhabitants can apply to perform in their localities at subsidised prices. Some 90 different groups can be booked, comprising classical music and choral performances, traditional Spanish songs and folklore, flamenco, dance, theatre and magic, and jazz and pop groups. A jury selected the 90 winning performers from 100 that applied. Town halls had to apply for inclusion in the circuits by June 26th. Apart from the aim of bringing summer cultural events to small municipalities, town halls can take advantage of the groups on offer to perform at local fiestas. Carboneras Castle The former fort, the San Andrés Carboneras castle, has had a major facelift inside, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of Carboneras as an independent municipality. The castle was built in 1621 as a defence against the Moors. In 1990, the exterior was renovated, but the interior conservation is seen as a big tourist boost. The 870,000 euros project received a grant of 75% from the Spanish government as part of a national programme to restore building of special cultural interest. ‘Endesa’, the electricity supply company with their power station at Carboneras, has provided illumination equipment valued at 100,000 euros.

So Now You Know... The Largest Musical Instrument Although not the loudest, (bells have that distinction) the organ is by far the largest musical instrument. Usually found in large churches, the pipe organ has existed in its current form since the 14th century. Along with clocks, it was considered one of the most complex man-made mechanical creations before the Industrial Revolution. They range in size from a single short keyboard to huge instruments with over 10,000 pipes. A large organ typically has three or four keyboards (manuals) with 61 notes each giving different sounds from distinct “banks” of pipes, and a 32 note pedal operated range, with up to 64ft pipes for the lowest notes.The attainable sound level can be equivalent to three symphony orchestras. Electric Shavers On July 23, 1929, Colonel Jacob Schick obtained a US patent for a “Shaving Implement”. He had first started work on a mechanical shaver in 1910 but the bulky design with a flexible drive from a small electric motor did not prove viable. During the First World War he was inspired to make a new version with a disposable blade assembly loaded like repeating firearms. His improved “dry” shaver model went on the market in 1929 with a company called ‘Schick Dry Shaver, Inc.’ in the US. Although not immediately popular he had a factory with 100 employees in the US town of Stanford by 1931. A larger company, ‘Rainbow Inc.’, was formed in 1940, but changed to ‘Schick Inc.’ in 1946. Yoghurt Originally a simple fermented dairy product, yogurt now has many variations and personalities. It can be thin and runny, or thick and firm. It can be made from cow milk, goat milk, sheep milk, nut milk, soy milk, rice milk, and from numerous other creamy substances. It is thought that the earliest yogurt was made by accident in Mesopotamia around 5,000 BC, when milk-producing animals were first domesticated. The milk was stored in bags made from their stomachs and the digestive juices and bacteria in them made the milk coagulate and become acidic. Not only was it a new and interesting food, but the acidity helped to keep it edible for longer than if it had just been in a bowl or jar.

Fountain Pens The earliest record of a reservoir pen dates to the 10th century when Ma’ad al-Mu’izz, the Calif of the Maghreb, demanded a pen that would not stain his hands or clothes. No details of its operation are available, nor examples. Further European examples are recorded in the 17th century. Petrache Poenaru received a French patent for the invention of the first fountain pen with a replaceable ink cartridge in 1827. From the 1850s there was a steadily accelerating stream of fountain pen patents and pens in production. At this time, fountain pens were almost all filled by means of an eyedropper, a slow and messy procedure. The US ‘Waterman’ company perfected the first “self filler” pen in the early 1900s. Sound Amplifiers An audio power amplifier is an electronic device that amplifies low-power audio signals within the range of human hearing (primarily frequencies between 20 - 20 000 Hz) to a level suitable for driving loudspeakers and is the final stage in a typical audio playback chain. Whilst the incoming signal may be minute in power, the output may be tens, hundreds, or thousands of watts. Early audio power amplifiers were based on valves (also known as vacuum tubes) invented in 1909 by Lee De Forest. Modern audio amplifiers are based on solid state transistor devices, but there are still people who prefer valve based amplifiers and claim the sound quality is superior and more realistic. The Tallest Tree The tallest trees in the world are the redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) of California. These can easily reach heights of over 300 ft (91 m). Among the redwoods in California, a tree named “Hyperion” is reputedly the highest known tree in the world. It was discovered in 2006, and is 379.7 ft (115.7 m) tall. Shortly after it was measured and deemed the world's tallest, a reporter for the “New Yorker” magazine climbed very close to the top, and then wrote a description of what it was like to stand there. A typical redwood lives for 500 to 700 years, although some have been documented as more than 2,000 years old. The redwoods' great height is due to the favorable Californian climatic conditions.

The Water Wrangle

ouseholders, hotels, restaurants and commerce were dismayed to be advised on June 12th by the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) that the tap water in this Levante region was not fit to drink, nor for use in cooking. This followed an announcement from the stateowned local water company ‘Galasa S.A.’, put on their website and sent to 11 municipalities on June 10th, that levels of chemical substances known collectively as ‘Trihalomethanes’ (THMs) were higher than guideline limits. There was of course; a predictable outcry.

Whilst the present EU “safe” limit is given as 100 micrograms, (it was 150 up to 2009) the level had risen to 115 micrograms in the water sent into the mains supply in early June. Prolonged very long term exposure to trihalomethanes can cause problems to kidneys and livers. It is also believed to have a potential cancer related effect after long term ingestion, although not all scientists agree. Boiling water reduces the levels, but reverse osmosis filter sets that many people use at home only have a “limited” effect (according to ‘Galasa’).

The water company ‘Galasa’ supplies almost all the water in this area and can choose from different sources. The desalination plant in Carboneras has a major pipeline that can be used to supply water to most Levante municipalities. As a commercial undertaking however, the operators of the Carboneras plant sell this water to pay for the initial cost. A major natural water pipeline comes to the ‘Galasa’ treatment facility at Cuevas from other major reservoirs, in a pipeline known as the “TajoSegura” and “Negratín” supply. All this changed dramatically last September 28th when the extraordinary rainfall and floods hit this area. The Cuevas reservoir, effectively dried up for years, filled to almost the total capacity with a rise in level of 21 metres over a few hours from direct rainfall and water draining down from the surrounding hills. The “Tajo” and “Negratín” pipeline was ruptured and out of use. ‘Galasa’ therefore started to use the now abundant Cuevas reservoir water to serve the Levante area using chlorine as a treatment tool. The use of chlorine to treat water for domestic use, including drinking and cooking, is a long tried and tested technique. This treatment has combated cholera, typhoid and dysentery epidemics and also reduces stomach upsets. Unfortunately however, when the chlorine is in contact with organic material such as rotting vegetation or animal carcases the trihalomethane chemicals are created. It seems accepted that this happened after the September

The only remedy for organic residue present in reservoir water destined for domestic use is a special treatment using chlorine dioxide, some ten times more expensive than ordinary chlorine. This is another tried and tested technique once the correct treatment dose has been determined. ‘Galasa’ has stated that in early May, work started on just such a treatment facility, hoping to be finished in mid August at a cost of 60,000 euros. On June 21st , ‘Galasa’ announced that apart from Mojácar and Carboneras where the water was now 100% desalinated, all the other municipalities were receiving 50% desalinated water and 50% from the Cuevas reservoir, thus reducing the trihalomethane limits. It seems likely that the limited exposure to high levels is no serious health hazard, as claimed by the Almería Diputación (County Council), but there will be many questions asked about this scare. ‘Galasa’ has promised full tests on the water supplies, and regular tests are carried normally for each municipality and then notified to the relevant health authority.

Distractions at the Wheel

f asked to state the most common causes of deaths on our roads, many readers would probably opt for the results of excess speed, or alcohol related accidents. In actual fact 51% of all road deaths in vehicles are caused by distractions, resulting in some 650 deaths in 2012.

The Spanish Traffic Police (DGT) in Almería province have recently been having another crackdown to try and reduce these figures and they observed or stopped over 8,500 drivers. 181 were reported for offences such as using mobile ‘phones for conversations or Internet use, fiddling with sat-nav equipment, or using headsets or helmet mounted devices to listen to music. This figure is only 2% of the drivers that came under scrutiny, but is still considered too many. Apart from the dangers involved, any offences such as those listed above merit a fine of 200 euros minimum and the loss of 3 points. The EU have announced that from October 2015, all member states including Spain must have installed the “e-call” system in new vehicles that automatically advise the 112 emergency services of accidents, allow multi-lingual verbal communication , and full GPS co-ordinates, along with the make of vehicle. Collateral Damage

s we reported last month, the new “PIVE2” incentive scheme to kick-start the sales of new vehicles has been positively received. Over 30% of the available 150 million euros has been earmarked since February, with some 50,000 new vehicle purchases approved. It seems certain that the money will run out way before the maximum of 12 months is reached. New vehicles have a minimum discount of 2,000 euros, 3,000 if a multiple family buy a large SUV, or even larger discounts and incentives for hybrid vehicles, and many dealers increase the amounts in order to get sales.

The ‘DGT’ traffic authorities are very concerned that many of these “apparent” private sales vehicles are in fact “trade” sales. They plan to prohibit “Se vende” (for sale) signs on vehicles in public areas or streets. Mojácar town hall stopped the display of vehicle for sale on car parks, or bits of waste ground, some years ago and other town halls are being asked to do the same thing in their areas.

Apart from stimulating the motor manufacturers and forecourt sales, the other aim is to take vehicles over 10 years old (or 7 if it is a van) off the roads to be scrapped. It would seem that everything is rosy, but there is a problem. The old “PIVE” scheme for 2012 applied not just to brand new vehicles, but also ones that were under 12 months old, so “Km 0” vehicles either used as demonstration cars, or old stock. The new scheme does not apply to this class of sales. Main dealers throughout Spain are sitting on a stock of nearly 12,000 “km 0” vehicles that are not competitively priced in relation to the new cars. The longer these cars remain unsold, the more depreciation takes place, so car showrooms are forced to give really aggressive discounts to get shot of them, with some dealers claiming they are selling at the cost price. The Spanish Association of Automobile Main Dealers states that the discount they have to apply is equivalent to a loss of 20 million euros, since the new “PIVE2”came in. Dealers cannot receive the 1,000 euros discount provided by the government as being 50% of the “PIVE2” scheme, and yet the whole point is to get old vehicles off the road. Latest figures show that 47% of the vehicles on the road in Spain are over 10 years old, 32% are between 4 & 10, and only 19% are less then 3 years old. Another problem is that small motor traders are consistently putting “for sale” notices

The number of registered cars on the road in Almería province has fallen in 2013 for the first time since 2008. Having climbed up to 322,500 vehicles in 2012, it is now down to 319,500. The “ITV” (MOT) test stations know every year approximately how many vehicles in the province are due to be tested, but 17% are not turning up, some 34,000 vehicles in 2012. In the last large crackdown by traffic police, some 6% of all vehicles stopped on the road lacked a current “ITV”. The ‘DGT’ traffic department is therefore sending out letters reminding drivers that the fine for not having a current test certificate is 200 euros, apart from the safety aspect. The fees for the “ITV” tests in 2013 have been frozen at the former price of between 34 and 44 euros. The problem is that many motorists, fearing a large bill, are not having a pre-test check either!

What’s On Concerts Alejandro Sanz returns to Spain in July as part of his world tour entitled “La Música No Se Toca”. He is in Almería city on July 27th at the Mediterranean Olympic Games stadium at 10pm. The album “La Música No Se Toca” has gone to number one in 18 countries, “double” or “triple platinum” in several, and “gold” in others. Tickets are 35 euros or 75 euros VIP.

Famous performers and music scholar s hold per formance workshops in the morning, conferences open to the public in the afternoons and concerts in the evenings at the Vélez Blanco castle. Fourteen organizations including the EU are patronizing the symposium, as this year celebrates the 300th anniversary of the signing of the Utrech Treaty.

“Festival de las Músicas del Mundo” is a series of concerts in the Plaza Vieja in Almería city. The composer/ performer Devacant performs on July 16th; Al-Magam, an Andalucia folk music group on July 17th; Milladoiro, a traditional music group from Galicia on July 18th; Olga Román, a celebrated Spanish/Latin jazz singer on July 19th and Ba Cissoko, an African band on July 20th. All concerts start at 10pm with no charge for the open air concerts. The Orquesta Filarmónica de Cámara de Colonia performs works by Vivaldi, Bach, Sarasata, Mozart and Borne at the Centro de Usos Mútiples (Artisan centre) below

What’s On Miscellaneous Mojácar’s “1st Ibiza Medieval Market” with stalls, artisan wares, music and magic entertainment, food and children’s activities, takes place July 12th-30th. The venue is given as being on the paseo (promenade) between the Pueblo Indalo and the Hotel Indalo, every night from 7pm-1am.

Flamenco Ballet Sara Baras, the renowned flamenco ballet dancer from Granada, brings her flamenco ballet group to Almería city on July 12th at 10pm in the Plaza Vieja as part of the 3rd Almería Dance Festival. The performance is entitled “La Pepa” and records the struggle for the independence of Cádiz in 18101812 when the Constitution came into being. Tickets are 18, 25 and 35 euros.

Bedar's 5th Hippie Night is on Saturday, July 20th from 7pm in El Cortijo bar, with half the road closed off and seating on the street. Disco sound starts from 7pm with ‘Opium Buddhas’ from 9.30pm.The event is in aid of local abandoned animals, and generous donations are requested as there is no entrance fee.

Exhibitions The ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ 36 prize paintings and other works of art (inspired by the film and locations in Almería) is touring various municipalities. Those in this area include August 27th-September 15th at Tijola, September 17thOctober 6th at Macael and October 8th-27th at the Museo Pedro Gilabert in Arboleas.

MACS have now opened their third shop and drop in centre on Mojácar Playa between the “Churros” bar and “La Bola” chiringuito & restaurant. A Happy Marriage?

Her Diary Entry: My husband was in an odd mood Saturday night. We planned to meet at a cafe for a drink. I spent the afternoon shopping with the girls and I thought it might have been my fault because I was a bit later than I promised but he didn't say anything about it. I don't remember doing anything to make him upset, but I could tell there was something wrong. The conversation was quite slow going so I thought we should go off to someplace intimate so we could talk more privately. We went to this restaurant and he was still acting a bit funny. I was getting really worried, what did I do? What was bothering him? Was he mad at me? I tried to cheer him up, but still wondered what was bothering him. Was it me or something else? I asked him if he was upset with me, he said no. But I wasn't really sure. In the car on the way back home, I said that I loved him deeply and he just put his arm around me. I didn't know what the heck that meant because, you know, he didn't say it back or anything. We finally got back home and I was wondering if he was going to leave me! So I tried to get him to talk but he just switched on the TV. Reluctantly, I said I was going to go to bed. Then after about 10 minutes, he joined me and to my surprise, we made love. But, he still seemed really distracted, so afterwards I wanted to confront him but didn't, so I just cried myself to sleep. I just don't know what to do anymore. I mean, I really think he must be seeing someone.
