Politics & Carnival Time

T

he Spanish General Elections on December 20th have left the country in a period of complete uncertainty politically. Needing a majority of 176 MPs, the 'PP' party in power before the elections only achieved 123, and the other main party the 'PSOE' 90 seats. These two parties have traditionally formed a government each with a majority, but between them lost 5 million votes compared to 2011. The new right wing 'Cuidadanos' party had a disappointing result, with only 40 MPs, but the new far left 'Podemos' party received enough votes for 69 MPs. So far there have been no coalitions formed that would result in a government. If all attempts fail, and it isn't looking good, new elections may have to be called for May. 61% of the Spanish population want a stable government formed from these four parties, and the uncertainty is not good for Spain. The EU troika are rightly concerned that growth forecasts for 2016 may suffer. Political pundits think that in any new elections there would still be a deadlock.

St. Valentine's Day on February 14th was not celebrated originally in Spain, but then became part of their festivities. Spanish restaurants join in, with special menus. Major cities have parades, but as this date is a Sunday this year, banks and official offices will be shut on the Monday. Towns and villages usually have some sort of festivity, often at town halls.

Focus on Local News Empty Houses Almería leads the provinces in all of Spain with the number of empty houses. Of all the new properties built in the last seven years, as at the end of 2015, there are 39% unoccupied. In the whole of Spain the average is 25%, totalling 389,000, built and unoccupied since 2008. 'Tinsa' the Spanish Society of Property Valuers consider that it will take until 2018, to shift this stock. They also say that a further reduction in prices needs to take place in 30% of these properties, as much as 6%. 14% of these properties are still up for sale by the promoter, the rest belong to banks, with almost all of these in the entity 'Sareb' who has purchased the totally bad debts, to try and sell them off to long term investors. A Filming Idea Almería province is a firm favourite as a choice of location for filming and is enjoying an upsurge in film companies that come here. Large epic films have helped to promote the area, and there are a host of small films or commercials being made here. The various landscapes, including sea and beaches, semi-desert areas, and special features such as marble mining and buildings such as the Almería castle and the Fort Bravo “cowboy” areas are all attractive locations. The current proposals are that a special “inside” area is made available. The proposal is that the congress building in Aguadulce is turned into a filming location. The total floor area is 4,000 sq metres, and has a height of 18 metres. At present there is a mezzanine level, and the proposal is that this should be demolished. Part of the area would be set aside for video and sound equipment to be installed, including post production facilities. Visitors to Torrecárdenas Hospital The authorities at the Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería city have put new regulations in place regarding hospital visitors. Quite often a Spanish patient may have a large number of visitors all at the same time. It is considered that this is not a good thing for other patients who are trying to rest or recuperate, and a problem for medical

staff. No more than two visitors can be in the ward or room at the same time. This has actually been a rule for a long time, but neither the hospital staff nor the visitors took any notice. Visiting hours are now 1pm to 11pm, and a patient admitted to the hospital will now be given two passes that have to be worn by visitors. One of these is for the principal visitor / relative, and for them alone. The second one can be interchanged between other people. Often visitors stay the night, and after 11pm this can only be the chosen principal one. There are also regulations that apply to children in hospital, and visiting children.

'Mercadona' Trade The company 'Mercadona' is the second largest privately owned company in Spain, still led by Juan Roig, one of the original family members who set the company up. A trade analysis company 'Kantar Worldpanel', has situated 'Mercadona' well in1st place, as having 23% of the Spanish supermarket trade, nearly three times more than their nearest rival 'DIA'. The figures for 'DIA' with 9% of the market reflect the purchase of the 'El Arbol' chain, and a smaller company 'La Plaza'. 'Carrefour' is only very slightly behind 'DIA', and an improvement in their figures is put down to the introduction of a “customer loyalty card”. The 'Eroski' share of the market has fallen to 6%, partly due to some of the

At Last! The problems of the existing mix of pedestrians and traffic in the main Turre high street, Avenida de Almería, has been waiting for a solution for years. The new mayor of Turre, Mártin Morales, has announced that the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) has agreed that the comprehensive project should go ahead with a 60/40% Junta and Turre split regarding funding. The town hall will be responsible for the maintenance to the new improvements once completed. Previous attempts to carry out this remodelling have not come to fruition, either for lack of an agreement, or lack of funds. It is hoped that work can start early this year.

Mojácar Parador, 50 years ago

50 Years The Mojácar 'Parador' hotel has been open this year for fifty years. Various locations in this region were being considered but the very active mayor, Jacinto Alarcon, was putting Mojácar forward as a destination for tourism and residents with endless tenacity and determination,. The 'Parador' consequently came to Mojácar, then a coastal village with little or no economic activity. It was officially opened a few days after the nuclear accident at Palomares, when Manuel Fraga, Spanish Minister of Tourism, brought the Spanish and American delegation that travelled to the area, following the incident. He inaugurated the 'Parador' on March 8, 1966. At the time, there were very few hotels in Almeria city, or even in the province as a whole.

Indalo de Oro Awards Every year at the large 'FITUR' tourist fair held in January at Madrid, Mojácar town hall present two golden “Indalo de Oro” awards to persons or associations who are considered important for the town and tourism. This year one award was given to the company 'DT Bike Promotion' who sell holiday packages for 'BMW' motorbike enthusiasts. This is a valuable source of interest and provides hotel rooms, the necessary support staff in Mojácar, El Algarrobico together with the normal commercial boost from The ecology group 'Salvemos Mojácar' are still tourists. Focus on Local News confirm the El Algarrobico hotel at Carboneras is legal, and that when Carboneras town hall granted a building permit in 2003, this was legal as well. Another blow is that the court ruled that the boundary for construction of 20 metres from the beach markers was correct when permission was given. A court in Almería ruled many years ago that whilst this 20 metre boundary was probably wrongly in force, when the norm was 100 metres, there was no collusion, or corruption, just a mixup. The highest tribunal in Spain, El Tribunal Constitucional, has now ruled that the ecology group have no case, and that this should be the end of the matter. A complaint that the three judges from the high court in Andalucía who decided the hotel was legal, did not take everything into account was also slung out. Salvemos Mojácar has now run out of Spanish courts to hear their appeals and rule in their favour. They intend to take their case to Strasbourg, to the Court of Human Rights.

Some Progress? Hardly. Work on the 'AVE' (Spanish high speed train) in Almería province died a death years ago. In the four year duration of the last parliament, any money advanced for studies, or final payment of small outstanding bills, has been virtually nil. In September 2014, solely to try and stop the barrage of criticism, the Minister of Transport, Ana Pastor, announced the start of 12 kilometres of track, from Pulpí to Cuevas, the start of the line in Almería province coming from Murcia. As there are hardly any sections from Murcia to the Almería border that have been started, this section of the line made no sense except as a political bone thrown to the critics. The adjudication of the work and starting the project was promised to happen “soon”. As nothing had happened at all by last December, it was announced that the expropriation of the land, never completed, would now go ahead! This was two weeks before the Spanish General Elections, a “coincidence” of course. Of the 20 distinct sections from Murcia city to Almería city, only ten have been completed or are being worked on. Apart from the latest promises regarding the

Pulpí to Cuevas link, there are only four sections completed in Almería province.

Give Us a Rebate! The water supply in Turre has been “acceptable”, or hardly drinkable for years. The mayor, Martín Morales, is asking for a rebate from 'Galasa', who supply most of the water. He claims that in other towns and villages, a reduction in the cost of the water has been made where there are leaks, which abound in Turre. He states that in other towns, 'Galasa' sort out the leaks, repair breakdowns in the supply, and absorb bad debts, but not in Turre. 'Galasa' is a public company, but the Almería Diputación (County Council) are the major shareholders. At present Turre town hall owe the water company 1.2 million euros.

Fancy A Go? The Roquetas Aquarium is offering a new facility for visitors. The company 'Aquatours Almería' have installed a floating cage in the tanks where the sharks live. This company specialize in underwater excursions and scuba diving. The top of the cage floats at water level, with the persons inside submerged in the water to just above their heads. The spectators can take a breath when they want to, or use a breathing tube. Many of the sharks are

The director of the aquarium, Enrique Fernández, says that this facility is the first of its kind in the world. The cage is available for booking by ringing 950 160 036, and the sessions take place from 4pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, for a duration of 30 minutes.

The Mojácar 2016 Budget At a council meeting held during the middle of December, Mojácar council approved the budget for 2016, totalling 10.3 million euros. One of the largest amounts of 2.75 million is for the construction of a new town hall where the Plaza Nueva is located. This viewing point will have to be substantially altered. A road to ease the pressure on the beach road during the summer is also on the plans. This is a much reduced by-pass than the one originally planned from beside the petrol station to join up with the Carboneras road past the beach hotels. This substitute road is intended to start by the petrol station again, but join the beach road near the stables at Cueva del Lobo. Funds are being requested from the EU, through the Almería Diputación (County Council). A project to determine the layout and cost of the continuation of the phase III of the Paseo (promenade) is also part of this expenditure, intended to go from the Red Cross to the Parque Comercial (Commercial Centre). Phase II is already under construction from the stables as far as the Red Cross roundabout. The town hall state that they have reduced their bank loans and other financial debts by 36%, with spare funds. The site can now be entirely accessed in English, with all sorts of useful information about the town, including the town council. Information now available relates to council meetings, police, urban planning, and regulations. (Currently this is not yet available in English). Culture, sports, current

affairs, and tourism, the most important of all, are featured. The information for tourists ranges from places to visit, trails and beaches, special hotel offers, catering, shopping, leisure and the cultural activities in Mojácar. The town council aims to improve and enhance existing features, new services, and access to assistance, with daily updates.

‘Grupo Cosentino' The multi-national company based in Cantoria that specialise in synthetic worktops and cladding for buildings have sold goods to the value of 715 million euros during 2015. This is 20% up on their invoicing in 2014. A total of 100 of their executives from the worldwide network met in Olula del Rio recently for a mass meeting. The strategic marketing plan for 2016-2018 was revealed. Their multi-purpose product 'Dekton', for worktops for kitchens, bathrooms, and flooring and cladding for buildings, has been in demand world-wide, with considerable sales. The research to bring this product to the market cost 91 million euros. A large factory in Brasil is to be expanded dramatically, and a total of 3,000 people are directly employed by Cosentino in 44 countries. During 2015, the number of employees has increased by 700, and 200 of these are in Spain. “Cosentino Centres” in many countries act as a sales, exhibition, and distribution area for

Architects and designers of kitchen and bathrooms are regularly invited to seminars at these centres to see the products that are available, their technical composition, and use.

The Garrucha Quay Garrucha port is very important regarding the exportation of yeso (gypsum) from Sorbas, and gravel. Four million tons in total are loaded onto cargo ships each year and major work has been undertaken to provide an underground entrance at the port for the streams of heavy lorries, but is behind schedule and not fully completed. The work was started in 2007, and then became one of the projects that was stopped owing to lack of funds. The entity that administer the ports in Andalucía have now put out to tender work to repair the quay that is suffering from damage from the sea and corrosion. The work has a guide price of 60,000 euros and a construction phase of nineteen months. Focus on Local News Road Deaths Any fatal accident on the roads is of course, a tragedy for families, loved ones, and friends. Secondary roads are where the most accidents take place, and we feature new proposals by the 'DGT' (traffic police) in an article. Total deaths were 1,126 in 2015, just 6 less than 2014. These numbers of deaths do still reduce every year since records were kept in 1960, with a fraction of the traffic. Deaths in 2005 were 3,200. There was a reduction of 50 deaths on motorways last year, but 45 more on secondary roads. Jorge Fernández Diaz, Minister of the Interior, sees the overall figures as positive, as the number of vehicles on Spanish roads topped 31 million. The proposal to reduce the speeds on secondary roads by 10km/hr, and other reductions in towns and cities was part of a package approved in 2014, but not yet implemented. Spain is much better than many EU states, in the number of road deaths. The overall EU total is 5 deaths for every 100,000 head of population. In Spain it is 3.6 persons per 100,000.

Plans for the Aged Albox town hall are studying two projects put forward that will benefit the aged. Less Módulos Various people who are self-employed or running a small business in Spain have been able to pay income tax and IVA (VAT) by a system known as 'módulos'. This results in a fixed amount to pay, subject to various initial calculations, when these businesses are started up. This fixed total is paid to the tax man every quarter. There was a plan to scrap this in 2015 that didn't happen, but changes will start to take place this year. It is anticipated that 290,000 of the present module system users, will now be taxed directly, in common with the rest of the population, so the tax and IVA they pay will reflect their true income and expenses. Sectors of employment who will be affected most are stated to be the textile industry, food businesses, mechanics, the construction industry, and certain equipment installers. In some cases an amount of less than 250,000 euros turnover applies before the new system comes into force, increased from the present 150,000 for commerce, hotels and restaurants, and the transport industry. The changes will be brought in gradually until 2018. The present system based on the number of workers, the size of their premises,

Vinyl Record Sales Specialist shops are catering for the rapidly increasing sales of vinyl records. The general public, not just “audiophiles”, are seeking out vinyl recordings. There has always been a complaint that CDs do not have the same dynamic range (the difference in loud and quiet passages), and CDs appear to be wearing out, a new phenomenon. Vinyl records from the 1950s have no degradation now from the sound when they were made. A record dealer in Granada says that consequently a “good” vinyl record, of a famous performance, or a well-known group, can change hands at 40-50 euros. Classical records are in demand and titles such as, “The Dark Side of The Moon” by Pink Floyd, Beatles recordings, Dire Straits, AC/ DC, and Queen, are being eagerly sought after. No Licences The Guardia Civil police are to prosecute a company in Vélez-Rubio who set up a small establishment for overnight accommodation and food, specializing in the hire of motorbikes. There were no licences in place, and the allegation is that the recommended routes for the motorbikes are causing erosion and damage to the countryside. The people involved were providing four rooms for guests and had 17 motorbikes of various types in a garage, mostly of mountain-bike types. Apart from the complete lack of any licences, the investigation claims that there was no insurance in place for the hirers of the motorbikes. A total of thirteen “denuncias” (official complaints leading to a court hearing) were made.

Mortgage Problem Help The Almería 'Diputación' (County Council), Almería town hall, and the association of lawyers in Almería province, have been working together to give help to people in mortgage difficulties since 2012. In 2015 they dealt with 244 requests for assistance, as opposed to a record number of 385 in 2013. The lawyers intervene when there is severe hardship or threat of eviction, and attempt to get mortgage terms changed, or the mortgage to be cancelled and the property become the ownership of the bank, or a time period free of payments. The requirements are that a family who seek help have a total income of less than twice the minimum income laid down by law (756 euros in 2015), and they reside in Almería province. A single person or two people in a relationship who have contracted a mortgage can also apply for help. 36,000 euros comes from the County Council and Almería town hall, and the lawyers provide the legal processes necessary.

A Slight Improvement The number of registered unemployed in Spain dropped to 4,093,500 in December 2015, compared to 4,447,700 in December 2014, so some improvement. In Almería province the number last year was 69,326; a 3% drop from November, and 7% for the year. The December number is influenced by the number of people who are given jobs prior to the Christmas season, in shops, restaurants and hotels, temporarily. Bank Charges Various banks have now published the charges relating to persons who use their cash machines with credit or debit cards from another bank. This is extremely complicated, but users will be advised if there is a fee, and how much. 'Bankia' have promptly announced that if a customer has their salary of more than 450 euros a month, or a minimum pension over 200 euros paid into an account with their bank, there will be no commissions charged at all, over a range of transactions. Keeping an account open with them has cost 48 euros a year, for a debit card 20 euros, and for a credit card, if used more than once, 34 euros. A cheque paid in for 2,000 euros also resulted in a fee of 6-7 euros. Using a 'Bankia' credit card in the “Euro 6000” machines, or those of 'Banco Sabadell' will be free of charge for four transactions per month. 'Bankia' owned 'Bancaja' before this subsidiary closed down, and the nearest branch for most people in this area is now in Almería city. 60% of Bankia is owned by the government entity that bailed them out in the bank crisis. The bank say that this will cost them 40 million euros but they hope to attract 300,000 new clients in 2016. Figures for Almería province reveal that in 2015, the sales of cars and 4 x 4s went up 21%, to 113,500. During December alone, a total of 900 new vehicles left the showrooms. This percentage is exactly the same as in Spain as a whole, with 1.03 million vehicles sold, an increase of 21% as well. The latest subsidised 'Plan PIVE' schemes have helped, although the discount from the Spanish Government and the manufacturer was reduced from 1,000 euros each to 750 euros. A slightly more optimistic viewpoint regarding the Spanish economy in general, is said to have helped. The average age of all vehicles on the road is still just under 12 years old, considered far too high. The 'DGT' traffic police say that the chances of injury or death in an old vehicle are more likely,

People in the waiting areas at the Inmaculada hospital in Huércal-Overa can now watch various flat-screen TVs whilst they are waiting. These give advice on health, eating habits, and the value of physical exercise. The available services at the hospital are also highlighted with a plan of the departments, patient rights, and the service available from 'Salud Responde', where appointments and other medical requirements can be requested. The Junta de Andalucía have installed these TVs before, in other hospitals, but complaints were made that the information had not been upto-date, and consequently they were not being used. The latest generation of these screens and the information available is considered to have overcome previous faults.

So Now You Know... The First Aircraft Sir George Cayley built a triple-wing glider in 1849 that carried a ten-year old boy for a short distance, the first heavier than air flight with a person. He carried on with development and in 1853 a larger version was piloted by his chauffeur. His chauffeur then resigned, saying, 'I was hired to drive cars, not fly these aircraft.' The Frenchman Clèment Ader made the first powered flight in 1890 but attempts to achieve sustained flight and full control were not possible. Richard Pearce who was a New Zealander, may well have made the first controlled power flight in 1903 but it was never properly recorded. In December 1903,Orville Wright claimed he had made the first controlled flight, and this is usually accepted as correct.

Wire Wool Pads In 1910 a US salesman was selling aluminium pots and pans, but his customers complained they were difficult to clean because coal fires were leaving a black coating on the outside. He asked his brother-in-law who was a jeweller, to help him find a solution. Eventually they concluded wire wool was best, but needed to be formed into some sort of pad. In 1913 they patented their design and formed a production company. Milton B. Loeb, another friend, became the first president of the company but wanted a snappy name that people would remember. After some suggestions it was decided that “Brillo Pads� was the best name. To improve the cleaning ability, soap was impregnated into the pads to stop some of the surface scratching.

The Flying Scotsman Probably the most famous locomotive ever, the 'Flying Scotsman', was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and built in 1923 for the LNER line. It became famous in 1924 when it went to the British Empire Exhibition, and was named the Flying Scotsman, as it went from London to Edinburgh. In 1928 a corridor was added behind the engine, so that a relief crew could take over, and on May 1st, the non-stop journey to Edinburgh only took eight hours. In 1934 it achieved 100 m.p.h, the first train ever to do this. After it was retired in 1963 it went to the US, and then briefly to Australia. In 2004, a restoration project was started with money raised from the public, Sir Richard Branson, and the National Heritage. It is now in running order again.

Ice-Cream Sundaes It appears that there was an ice-cream parlour in Wisconsin in the US that was running out of supplies on Sundays, with no deliveries. To use less ice-cream they added chocolate sauce and fruit syrup. This was a roaring success, and on other days of the week, customers asked for 'Sunday ice-cream'. Eventually religious zealots objected to the name, saying that using 'Sunday' was a blasphemy and the Lord's Day was not meant to be associated with something as frivolous as ice-cream! The owners decided that a change of name had to be similar, so came up with the name 'Sundae', pronounced exactly the same way. In 1922, sellers of Wall's ice-cream started riding tricycles and shouting, 'Stop me and buy one'.

Lorries A genuine lorry is a vehicle that is self-contained for freight or goods, instead of just pulling something else. The first example was a steam lorry in 1870 that carried boilers from a factory in Glasgow to the docks. By 1895 a prototype petrol engine lorry had been built, and the German Daimler Company went into production. In 1898 the UK lorry manufacturer Thorneycroft developed the first articulated lorry with a tractor unit and a detachable trailer. This greatly improved the design of lorries as the tractor unit could drop off the trailer and go off to get another one whilst the first one was being unloaded. 'Mega Lorries' are now in use in Europe, with two trailers, a length of 25 metres and a weight of 60 tonnes.

Microscopes The Dutchmen, Hans Janssen and his father Zacharias, were spectacle makers, and about 1590 they were experimenting with putting a lens at each end of a tube. They christened this invention a 'microscope', but left it at that. Robert Hooke, an English scientist, published a book in 1665 entitled 'Micrografia', that dealt with the uses a microscope had, and some of his scientific investigations. Microscopes were then treated as a genuine scientific tool with a wide range of uses. A more elaborate design in 1676 had various power lenses that could be rotated depending on the desired magnification. Further improvements meant that bacteria could be seen in substances such as tooth tartar and microbes in samples of water.

Bad News for Almería

I

n 2015, the number of passengers using Spanish airports went up by nearly 6%, totalling just over 207 million. This is the best figure ever, apart from in 2007 before the crisis bit in 2008. In 2007, some 210 million passengers used Spain's airports. Out of the 47 Spanish airports that the entity 'AENA' administrate, 33 saw numbers increasing, but 14 airports had less passengers. Some of these are relatively minor ones, such as Tarragona, and the Gerona-Costa Brava airport. Unfortunately, Almería airport saw a drop in passengers of 7%, following a rise of nearly 6% during 2014. The 2015 total of 691,000 persons using the airport is the second worse figure since 1996 when the numbers were 682,000. At this time the airport was only a fraction of the present size, with hardly any facilities. Since 1996, numbers steadily increased to 819,000 in 1999, and in 2005 & 2006 over 1 million passengers. The record number was in 2007, in common with the rest of Spain, with 1.2 million; so the 2015 numbers are almost half the 2007 ones. In 2009, there were 784,000, and then numbers dropped to 705,000 in 2013, but in 2014 it went up to 745,000.

Palma de Mallorca with 24 million were in third place, whilst Málaga went up to 14 million, and Alicante were not far behind with 11 million. Gran Canaria saw the same number.

So what has gone wrong in Almería? There are various reasons put forward. The number of tourists coming to Almería province is at a record number, and the nights they stay in hotels, or other accommodation. So international tourists are using alternative airports such as Alicante, open 24 hrs. There are a number of flights on various routes here that tail off or stop completely in the winter months. Tourists looking for flights then switch to other airports. When there are reduced flights into Almería during summer the same thing happens. Agreements made between the Almería Tourist Board, and airlines or tour operators from Nordic countries have not been the success initially forecast, although there are some new UK flights scheduled this winter. 'AENA' offer flight companies special discount on airport fees for new routes, Analysts consider that some of the overall increases but this isn't working here either! It's a Catch-22 are because of terrorism fears in countries such situation.

High Tech Cameras

T

he Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) is the arm of Spanish police who deal with traffic regulations, safety campaigns, vehicle checks, speeding, and fines. Technically they are part of the Ministry of the Interior, but they are able to amend various regulations themselves. The latest major changes relate to roadside cameras in particular. On secondary roads, 80% of accidents and deaths take place. Many campaigns have tried to address this problem with varying degrees of success. There are still a very high percentage of drivers who do not wear seat belts or use safety seats for children, and use their mobile phone for conversations or messages whilst driving. A special campaign last October by traffic police, for just one week, resulted in 1,349 drivers being fined for not using seat belts, and 1,113 fined for using mobile phones. A loss of three driving points takes place, and a 300 euro fine. The DGT say that a temporary loss of concentration can result in an accident, injury, or death, and is as bad as driving “over the limit”. Existing fixed radar cameras are triggered by excess speed and take a photograph of the vehicle from behind as it goes past, showing the rear number plate. All these cameras will be rotated so that the photograph shows the front of the vehicle and whether seat belts are being worn by the driver and passengers, and if devices such as mobile phones are being used. In Almería province last year, police say eight fatalities would almost certainly have been prevented if safety belts or seats were employed. Accident analysis from 2014 led to the conclusion that 75 deaths throughout Spain could have been avoided. These changes, particularly on secondary roads, will soon be put into place, meaning that drivers can be caught remotely, apart from the checks by roadside police, and fined. A new feature is that mobile cameras will be placed in different locations. These will take photographs to catch drivers abusing these safety regulations but not excess speed. The height of the camera will show what is happening

inside the vehicles. Of course, sophisticated computer recognition and the storing of information are necessary, but at places like airports they exist now.

As regards fixed radars that measure speed, the speed will be measured between two sets of cameras in some places, to stop people braking hard for a few seconds, and then speeding up again. In Almería province in 2015, a total of 2,700 fines and loss of points resulted from fixed radar speed cameras, an average of eight per day. 1,800 were from the radar cameras on the A7 motorway near El Ejido, with 51 per day! Male drivers hold 61% of all drivers’ licences in Almería province, but accounted for 80% of all traffic offences last year. An almost equal number of men and women were fined for excess speed. Cameras at airports are now extremely sophisticated. At Alicante airport, after complaints from local taxi drivers, the cameras count the number of times taxis from outside the area are arriving, with a set limit. Counting the number of times private vehicles come to an airport can spot “illegal taxi services”. These vehicles when stopped are confiscated there and then by police, and scrapped or auctioned if the offence is proven in court, with a minimum fine of 1,700 euros for the driver. Insurance is invalid if a private vehicle is carrying passengers for money, and taxi drivers rightly complain. Their vehicles have stringent safety checks and full insurance cover for passengers.

Carnival Events The Aguilas Carnival takes place from February 4th-13th. Various initial events take place from the 4th- 6th, with a regatta on Saturday 6th starting at the port at 11am. The first large procession is on Sunday, February 7th starting at 6pm There is a night carnival event on Monday 8th at midnight in the Plaza de España square. On Tuesday, February 9th, the second main procession starts at 6pm, and the final one Saturday, February 13th at 6pm, followed by the burning of Don Carnal and fireworks. Mojácar Carnival main events take place on February 5th, 6th, & 7th. On Friday, the Bartolomé Flores school children have a carnival procession from the school at 10am, to the town hall square. On Friday & Saturday nights at 10.30pm, carnival dancing

The Family

A fire started on some grassland near a farm in Alberta.The fire department from the nearby town was called to put the fire out. The fire proved to be more than the small town fire department could handle, so someone suggested that a rural volunteer fire department be called. Though there was doubt that they would be of any assistance, the call was made. The volunteer fire department arrived in a dilapidated old fire truck. They drove straight towards the fire and stopped in the middle of the flames. The volunteer firemen jumped off the truck and frantically started spraying water in all directions. Soon they had snuffed out the centre of the fire, breaking the blaze into two easily controllable parts. The farmer was so impressed with the volunteer fire department's work and so grateful that his farm had been spared, that he presented the volunteer fire department with a check for $1,000. A local news reporter asked the volunteer fire captain what the department planned to do with the funds. "That should be obvious," he responded. "The first thing we're gonna do is get the brakes fixed on that stupid fire truck."

One semester an art-student asked a friend if he could paint his portrait for a class assignment. The friend agreed, and the art student painted and submitted the portrait, only to receive a C minus. The art student approached the professor to ask why the grade was so poor. The teacher told him that the proportions in the painting were incorrect. "The head is too big," the professor explained. "The shoulders are too wide, and the feet are enormous." The next day, the art student brought his friend to see the professor. He took one look at the friend and said, "Okay, A minus."

I was no sooner seated than I heard a voice from the next stall: "Hi, how are you doing?" Well, I am not the type to chat with strangers in highway comfort stations, and I really don't know quite what possessed me, but anyway, I answered, a little embarrassed: "Not bad." And the stranger said: "And, what are you up to?" Talk about your dumb questions! I was really beginning to think this was too weird! So I said: "Well, just like you I'm driving east." Then, I heard the stranger, all upset, say, "Look, I'll call you back, there's some idiot in the next stall answering all the questions I am asking you."

The kids filed back into class Monday morning. They were very excited. Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then share with the class how they were successful. Little Mary led off, "I sold girl scout cookies and I made 30 dollars," she said proudly, "My sales approach was to appeal to the customer's civil spirit and I credit that approach for my success." "Very good," said the teacher. Little Sally was next, "I sold magazines," she said, "I made 45 dollars and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them abreast of current events." "Very good, Sally," said the teacher. Eventually, it was Little Johnny's turn. The teacher held her breath. Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the teacher's desk. "2,467 dollars," he said. "2,467dollars!" cried the teacher, "What in the world were you selling?" "Toothbrushes," said Little Johnny. "Toothbrushes?" echoed the teacher, "How could you possibly sell enough toothbrushes to make that much money?" "I found the busiest corner in town," said Little Johnny, "I set up a chocolate chip cookie stand and gave everybody who walked by a free sample.� They all said, "This tastes like MUD!" Then I replied, "It is. Wanna buy a toothbrush?"
