The Transition to Easter anuary and February in Spain are the months when the Christmas and New Year celebrations become a thing of the past, and activities slowly come back to normal. The “Three Kings” celebrations in Nijar ended in tragedy this year. A young man depicting the King Baltazar fell off the procession vehicle when telephone cables toppled the top of the large crown he was sitting in. Unfortunately he died of a fractured skull a few hours later in hospital. A judge in Almería city has opened an investigation. The same vehicle and crown travelled down the same street last year, without incident.

population now celebrate this day, with restaurants offering special meals and events. Like some of the present Christmas celebrations, the observing of these and St. Valentine's Day did not exist in Spain originally. February 28th, a Saturday this year, is a major fiesta date in Andalucía, being the anniversary of the constitution that established Andalucía as an autonomous region, so having a direct right to determine many rules and regulations for themselves. In cities such as Almería there are commemorative events, but as it is a Saturday, most “official” offices will be shut anyway.

Many restaurants have shut shop for this winter period, to have a rest and some holidays. They will slowly be open again, but some of them are waiting for Easter. Last year, Easter Sunday was on April 20th but this year it has come forward to April 5th. Working backwards, Shrove Tuesday or “Mardi Gras” is on February 17th. This was traditionally the last fling before the start of Lent the next day, the sombre period before Easter for those people with religious convictions. “Mardi Gras” is carnival time, and the most famous one in our area takes place in Águilas. Starting the carnival events in Águilas to coincide with “Mardi Gras” this year, almost guarantees inclement weather, or at least low temperatures. This year the carnival events start on February 12th, and finish with the last procession on February 21st. Hopefully the scantily clad women in the main processions will not be blue with cold. We list the main events and dates in our “What's On” section.

Corruption in Spain is now a very hot potato, both at local, regional and national level. We feature this in an article. Various mayors and councillors, past and present, are in the dock, and convictions will have the effect that many will be barred from standing in the May 24th municipal elections. The existing political parties, and new coalitions, are polishing up their manifestos to gain votes. Last year, Almería airport recorded an increase in passenger numbers of 6%, the first increase in the last five years. From June 1st - September 31st, 365,000 passengers used the airport. 71% arrived on international flights, and it is anticipated that numbers in 2015 will be even better. Tourists from the UK still make up the largest group. Celebrating Día de Andalucía in school

Although the dates for Easter vary every year, other events are on fixed dates, the same every year. Huércal-Overa have an event unique to their town on February 8th. Their new parish church was ready to be occupied on this date, 274 years ago. Statues and all the religious artifacts were carefully carried from the old church to the new one. As is got dark, bonfires and torches were lit to help illuminate the streets. This event known as “Noche de las Lumbres” (Night of the fires) is celebrated every year with bonfires in the streets. February 14th is of course St Valentine's Day, and the Spanish

Focus on Local News Less Savings for Almería Province. The rates of personal income tax from January 1st have been changed, to give a saving in the amount paid. The Spanish Finance Minister announced this last year, trumpeting a reduction in taxes of 3.3 billion euros in 2015, and another 2.6 billion in 2016. Whether this is factual, depends on the autonomous communities, in our case the Junta de Andalucía. This is because 50% of income tax paid goes to the Spanish state, and the other 50% to the autonomous region. It had been left up to these regions to decide if they were going to meet the government reductions (so lose income) or do nothing. Andalucía has chosen to make no reduction in the tax on the 50% they collect, in both 2015 and 2016. This means that they will collect 12% on the first tax band of up to a total of 12,450 euros, (so 1,495 euros), whereas the state have reduced theirs to 10% (so 1,245 euros). Any resident in Murcia will be delighted to see that their autonomous region has matched the basic rate of 10%, whilst in Madrid it is only 9.5%. Persons living in San Juan de los Terreros (as an example), will pay 249 euros more tax each year on the 1st band total, than any person in Águilas or Murcia! Further bands are similar. Up until this year, a person who wished to put money into a private pension scheme was allowed to contribute a maximum amount of 10,000 euros per year, or 12,500 over the age of 50, and this reduced the total income tax payable by a large amount. This year, and in 2016, the maximum amount has been reduced to 8,000 euros for ever ybody.

So in a 50kms/hr limit, a top speed of 57. At speed limits of 100kms/hr or over, the allowable margin will be just 7% of the recorded speed. So on 100km/hr roads, the minimum allowable speed is only 107km/hr, and on motorways 129km/hr. In reality, there is a 2kms/hr “extra” allowance for calibration errors, so above 109kms/hr in a 100 limit, and 131 on a motorway. Later this year the 100km/hr limit on secondary roads is due to be reduced to 90km/hr. The plan to increase motorway speeds to 130km/hr on selected sections has been scrapped as being too complicated. Slow down!

It is a building that has a very long history, and was converted into a performance centre in 1993. If an EU national has become resident since January 19th 2013, they must do this after the two year period expires, if they have the old ones. Getting a Spanish licence is very easy. Since 2010 there are specialized centres authorized by the Spanish DGT traffic authorities. These centres are officially known as “Centro medical de reconocimiento autorizado.” If you do not know where your local centre is, ask at any driving school, or your medical centre. (There is one in Garrucha for example, on the paseo/promenade). According to the 2015 “You and the Law in Spain” by David Searle, you make an appointment at one of these centres, and you need your original licence plus a photocopy, two photos (32x26mm), your residence certificate (A4 or the new credit card size) and a photocopy. There is a simple medical test (they will also ask you about any regular medication), a sight and coordination test. These centres use the DGT website when they see you, and the application is sent off online, you don't need any special forms. The new licence will then come through the post. For normal licences the Spanish one is valid for 10 years, or 5 if you are over 65. There will be a period of time when no actions will be taken if you do not have the new licence, but this time limit has not been specified. The Spanish traffic authorities only recently spelt these requirements out, to the consulates of 28 member states. EU countries that have to introduce the new plastic cards have until 2033 to comply. Change your licence as soon as is convenient, to be on the safe side. Anyone who wants a Spanish licence can obtain one whenever they wish at the same centres, or renew a Spanish licence that has expired, or is due to expire. If you go back permanently to the UK or other EU state with a Spanish licence, the process works in reverse.

Oria Houses In January, a court in Almería city heard the initial spoken arguments from the prosecution and defence, relating to five houses in Oria, considered “illegal”. In 2003 & 2004, four houses were built in La Pedanía de la Rambla de Oria, and the fifth one later. The public prosecutor said that they were built without any building licence and on land not zoned

for urban development. The promoters and builders of these houses are a Spaniard and an Englishman. Prison sentences of 24 & 15 months are being asked for, as well as fines. If convicted, the developers will be made responsible for the cost of demolition (a demolition order is being requested), and paying compensation to the UK ex-pat owners, of the purchase prices and costs. A further three houses may also be subject to court proceedings. The court hearings have been adjourned at present, on the ground that the owners have never been informed of these proceedings, and should have been. The original court who started off this case must reconsider their actions, with the owners having legal representation. What this will mean ultimately remains to be seen.

The Hotel Moresco The once emblematic Hotel Moresco in Mojácar pueblo, has been shut and deteriorating for years. Before it closed, the hotel and restaurant offered unrivalled views towards Garrucha and the the general coast area, and there was a swimming pool on the roof. After a court dispute over ownership was settled, a Madrid based promoter, Arturo Fernández, promised to restore the hotel and re-open it. This has never happened. 165,000 euros in “IBI” (rates bills) remain unpaid for several years, and 495,000 euros was advanced as a regional grant towards the estimated restoration cost of 1.6 million euros. Opposition councillors complain that the Mojácar mayoress, Rosa María Cano, is not pursuing the rates debt. Fernández was awarded one of the Mojácar “Indalo de oro” annual honours for outstanding services to Mojácar, prior to any work being done, presented every January at the “Fitur” tourism event

'AVE' Pressure Last September, the Ministry of Transport promised that the first section of the Almería line from Pulpí to Cuevas, just 12 kms, was being started in early 2015, and all the paperwork would be completed, and the work authorized in the last quarter of 2014. This did not happen! On January 2nd it was stated that the paperwork was not completed because there had not been time but would be available “soon”, and a start made definitely before the General Elections this year! The starting and completion of this section is however nothing more than a political bone, thrown to the pressure groups and Almería Chamber of Commerce who have been clamouring for action. Until there are other sections at the Murcia side of Pulpí, or more sections on the Almería side, this 12 kms section makes no sense, except politically. The Spanish government announced on January 16th, after all this criticism, that they were authorising the work to start “asap”.

Mojácar town hall has finally decided that they have been ignoring most of the UK ex-pats. A “What's on in Mojácar” fortnightly newsletter will be available by email, facebook “Mojácar Informa” as well as at www.mojacar.es. Alternatively, you will be able to collect a paper copy from any Mojácar Tourist Office. Extra bulletins will announce events that have been arranged at short notice, or cancelled, which has been another bone of contention. The mayoress also intends that they emphasise the help that is available to some of the older residents, who may not know of the grants, discounts and social care that can be applied for. Hopefully this initiative will work. Once again, there are municipal elections in May!

In comparison to the “AVE” (high speed train project), the Ministry of Transport is forging ahead with the completion of the A-7 motorway from Almería province to Málaga. The latest section from Polopos to Albuñol in Granada province was opened just before Christmas. This section has needed immense technical solutions, because of the terrain. At one stage it is 200 metres high over the old N-340 road and there are cuttings and viaducts that range from 50 metres to 115. There are 39 major drainage projects, a tunnel that is at sea level with major reinforcing needed, and numerous other problems. It is the most costly motorway section in Spain, having cost 354 million euros; 247 in direct construction, and then compensation costs for land expropriated and various costly studies. Ana Pastor, the Minister for Transport, who opened the section, said that to put the cost of this 15 kilometre section in context, it had cost more than a major hospital! There are only a remaining total of 16 kilometres to be finished and opened before the whole project is complete, planned for September 2015. The motorway was first started 14 years ago!

A judge in Almería ruled at the beginning of January that Albox town hall, two managing directors of construction companies, and an architect, had to come up with large sums of money, to be lodged with the court for eventual payment to owners of properties bought in good faith, where a demolition order is being asked for. The court case relates to 98 dwellings, almost all owned by UK ex-pats, in the El Romeral-La Aljambra area, built between 2004 and 2006, on land not zoned for urban development. Albox town hall have to deposit 3.1 million euros with the court, and the directors of 'Procoal Villa S.L'., and 'Empire Villas S.L', 3.8 million, and 3.1 million euros. An architect linked to this development, who is a brother to one of the directors, is also required to stump up 3.1 million euros. These amounts of money (if paid) will be potential compensation for the owners, and 690,000 euros of the total amount is the estimated cost of demolition. One of the directors of the construction companies is also charged with defrauding the Spanish tax office of 350,000 euros, by putting very low purchase prices on the “escrituras” (title deeds), and paying reduced amounts of tax. Prison sentences are also being requested. This initial court hearing and rulings so far, is the start of what will probably be a long drawn out process. The judge has the right to deny the requested demolition order if he wishes to do this, and damages for the “good faith” owners is also included in the total of the bond money. Of course, any town hall that is asked to stump up a large sum of money can only get this from income from rates, and other amounts of money paid in by citizens. Albox town hall are taking this view, and disputing the decision that they have to pay!

Checking the Voters List The “Unión Mojaquera (UM)” political party in Mojácar have formally requested to the Mojácar mayoress that they have access to the full list of persons entitled to vote in the forthcoming May elections. They claim that in the 2011 elections, some persons on the list were not Mojácar residents; as many as four persons were each registered with addresses of abandoned or ruined cortijos, or up to seven people registered to a single room. The ruling “PP”

party with a majority vote in 2011 obtained 1,112 votes out of the 2,847 people who voted, and more than 400 were postal votes, so 36%. The party with the next highest number of postal votes only had 7%. The absolute “PP” majority of seven councillors was obtained with just 200 votes. Diego García from the UM party states that if more than 50% of the 400 postal votes were fraudulent, the PP party would only have obtained five out of the thirteen councillors, so a coalition would have resulted.

New “Pirate Taxi” Legislation The Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province), has put into law the recently proposed changes to the penalties for people providing pirate taxi services, along with some new ones. Previously, following a successful prosecution, the vehicle could be confiscated. The new regulations allow for immediate confiscation, and on successful prosecution (that can take a long time), with fines of 1,400 to 2,800 euros per offence. The vehicle will only be returned if the fine is paid, or other penalties satisfied. An illegal pirate taxi driver, if stopped, will have to pay for the passengers to travel from the airport or train station by other means. If they refuse to do this, this is another reason for sanctions, for the driver, not necessarily the owner. Local police will step up patrols in the immediate vicinity of an airport or coach station, where pirate taxi drivers often drop off their passengers, to avoid being spotted. Taxi drivers keep their own tallies of regular vehicles they notice, considered to be illegal.

Focus on Local News continued 'AUAN' Referral The pressure group AUAN are asking for an urgent review of the demolition of properties belonging to ex-pats, particularly UK ones, by the European Commission. They state that the demolition of houses acquired “in good faith”, amounts to indirect discrimination. They point out that of the 13 properties demolished since 2008, five of them were owned by UK persons, so some 35%. They point out that the number of UK residents in Almería province is only 18,000, out of a total population of 550,000, only 3.3%. They are asking that a ruling is given that properties acquired in good faith should not be demolished until compensation is paid out. These statistics are somewhat flawed as the number of ex-pats that have bought properties in places such as Arboleas, are probably 99%, compared to 1% of Spanish Nationals.

Another statement was, “You have to come back after the holidays, in the New Year”, told to someone on December 22nd, when the application to vote had to be made before December 30th. Jessica Simpson states that these impediments are illegal, and show a clear policy of excluding non-Spanish residents from the “padrón” and voter's register.

Letters from Santa The postal union 'CSIF' in Almeria province, claimed on January 3rd, that there were still 450,000 letters and parcels undelivered from Christmas. They blame this on the laying off of 250 postal workers in the province. They say that this applies to ordinary letters, those sent to be signed for, and parcels. This year because of internet shopping, the union says that the volume of postal items was five times the normal amount during the rest of the year, and no extra staff were set on. They state that some parcels or packets, if not delivered by a certain date following their arrival at a post office, have to be returned to the senders. The Spanish state hopes to sell the post office undertaking to a private buyer, but it is heavily in debt.

In our last two issues, we stressed the importance of residents signing up on their local municipal “padrón”, (register of inhabitants), and then the application to vote in the municipal elections next May 24th. “Ganemos Mojácar”, the new coalition of three political parties led by Jessica Simpson, have reported on some problems experienced at Mojácar town hall. Persons wishing to sign up have been told; the form filled in was not in blue biro; a large number of documents (not required by the regulations) were

Los Vélez Castle Patio The very elaborate patio (16 metres by 11 metres), from Los Vélez castle that dates back to 1505, was sold to the Metropolitan Museum in New York, by French intermediaries who bought it in 1904. It comprises a double storey balcony, and galleries, with an amazing amount of intricate decoration, amounting to 2,000 pieces of marble, carved by Italian workers using Macael marble. It separated the military side from the domestic side. In 2008, a Spanish 3D digital company 'Delta CAD', undertook a complete laser survey of every part of the patio, that took over 6 months, when the museum was shut. The Junta de Andalucía has now approved another grant, of 900,000 euros, for a complete study as to how a replica patio can be produced, and installed in Los Vélez castle. This money is for Los Vélez town hall, the Andalucía Association of Marble Producers, and the Andalucía Technical Stone Centre. Part of this work is technical advice to stop

Focus on Local News continued the original patio from deteriorating at the New York museum, although it was restored and reopened in 2002. If a replica can be completed, this is thought to be a major new tourist attraction at the castle that became the ownership of the Junta just a few years ago. The original patio will stay in New York, of course. Living with Family Figures for Almería province show that 75% of persons between the ages of 16-30 live in the family home, so only 25% have flown the nest. This 25% is higher than the national average, where only 22% have left home. In Cádiz, the stay at home numbers amount to 84%. Many people in this age group are in financial difficulty because they are out of work (nearly 50%), or they worry that their jobs may be at risk. Those that are in work but with temporary contracts, are the ones who are in most fear of losing their jobs. The cost of buying a house with a mortgage (if you can get one!) often requires 50% of their take home pay, so again, really difficult and fraught with problems. Women Drivers The popular conception that woman drivers don't know how to drive, is not borne out in Almería province. Of the 14,000 traffic fines handed out in 2014, only 3,000 were to women drivers. The number of registered licence holders for male drivers is not too far different from the number of female drivers, as just 60% of all the drivers are males. The age groups between 25-34, and 35-44 attract the most offences, with 3,000 in each category. 400 drivers lost all their points during 2014, making the total since 2006 when the points system came into place up to 3,000. An End to Cheap Rents In 1964, to protect small businesses, the rent paid was frozen. These amounts of money were amended slightly in 1985, but not to existing contracts. In 1994, a further freeze was announced, with a cut-off date of 20 years, so 2014. There are probably 60,000 premises where the landlord can now charge a market rent, thought to affect

120,000 employees. The occupiers of theses premises (normally shops), will have preferential treatment to stay there for 1 year at the new rent if they wish to, and cannot be turned out. Many businesses have been forced to move, or close down, but the end of the freeze on rent has always been known to end in 2014. In some cases the 2015 market rent is five times the present rent, but good news for the owners, who have been forced to continue renting at the old rates. At one stage it was estimated that 200,000 businesses would be affected, but many of them have already closed, when renters retired or died.

A Seat Leon

Still On the Up! Sales of private cars and 4 x 4's hit the record figure of 855,000 last year, the highest number since 2010. This is considered almost entirely the result of the “PIVE” schemes that give a minimum discount of 2,000 euros when an old vehicle is scrapped. December is always considered a “slow” month for vehicle sales but last December, 73,000 sales were made. The Association of Vehicle Concessionaires says that discounts of as much as 4,000 euros (with free add-on kits) are quite usual. The “PIVE 6” scheme that ran out of funds during last October was extended to the end of December, and the “PIVE 7” scheme will run probably until March, with the possibility of a further extension when the grant money runs out. Sales of the 'Seat' Leon, the 3rd most popular car, reached 28,000 units, and the Ibiza model was 4th with another 28,000. As all 'Seat' cars are manufactured in Spain, this is a big boost for the manufacturers as well.

Focus on Local News continued Large Bills! Rogelio Mena, the mayor of Albox, will be in court soon to answer charges that he has systematically refused to supply requested information to the opposition councillors. He says it is a political ruse to try and stop him from being eligible to stand in the May municipal elections. It does appear that there are some explanations needed. One allegation is that between February and December 2013 he made around 84 “unknown” journeys costing 14,000 euros, and another 90 between January to October 2014, at a cost of 18,000 euros. The opposition want to know where he went, and why it cost 33,000 euros? They say that in 20 months he made 174 recorded visits to Madrid and Seville, and a total of 46,000 euros, including fuel, food, and drink has come from municipal funds. A further claim is that in July 2014, 1,800 euros was claimed for expenses, and 1,230 euros for meals, with one food bill from an establishment in Madrid for 250 euros. The prosecution authorities are asking for a prison term (suspended) of 24 months, and a ban on holding public office for 6 months. There have been rumours circulating for some time that he has separated from his wife and formed a romantic liaison with a lawyer in Madrid. This lawyer has given legal advice to Albox town hall for some time. Last October she was awarded a new contract of 2,500 euros a month plus travelling expenses but this was then suspended a few weeks later, when the political accusations were made public. Opposition councillors claim that this is the reason he goes to Madrid so often! Excellent Transplant Figures Spanish transplant and organ donations are consistently high. In 2014, some 19 donors in Almería province resulted in 45 transplants. This figure means that there have been 37.5 donors per million head of population, slightly higher than the national average. This figure is double that of many other European states, and well above those in the US. The centre for organ transplants at the Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería city co-ordinates donors and organ transplants in the province. The age of the donors in 2014 varied from 34 years of

age to 81. Donors are still needed, and the authorities say that the more donors there are, the more transplants can be carried out. They ask that more people register on the donor's lists.

A “Dobbin” Initiative Golf tourism is seen as one of the most profitable, as regards money spent by the visitors. A new venture that is very likely to become another money spinner is the people who arrive here for equestrian tours. An EU initiative highlights and promotes this type of tourism in Europe throughout six member states. A French television company recently screened a documentary that showed the attractions of Cabo de Gata, parts of Nijar, and the beaches of Los Genoveses and Monsul, as perfect places for horse-riding activities in Europe. There are said to be 6 million people in Europe who take part in holiday horse-riding activities. A reader has pointed out that this is not a new political party, as we stated. It is a coalition of three existing ones, who will operate under a single banner, with a legal framework and statutes. So Now You Know... Aircraft Black Boxes A form of flight data recorder was developed in the UK, during World War II. The unit was developed by engineers Len Harrison and Vic Husband. It used copper foil with styli that traced the various instruments and flight controls. The copper strip was advanced in sections that gave a time reference. Improved units were developed at the UK Farnborough aviation centre for the Air Ministry. Harrison and Husband were persuaded to sign over their invention and the Air Ministry patented it. The purpose was to create a unit that could survive conditions that aircraft could not like fire and being submerged. Modern orange “black boxes” are greatly improved by generating a homing signal.

Knitting The word knitting is thought to be a variation on the word knotting, for the making and repairing of fishing nets. The Victoria and Albert museum in London have knitted socks, believed to date from 300-499 AD, excavated in Egypt. They were made from wool using stocking stitch and a single needle. A painting of the Madonna (mother of Jesus) from 1390 shows her knitting with four needles making a circular tube. Stockings for men to wear under their short trousers became common, and were considered both stylist and practical. By the 17th century, extremely fine knitting using gold and silver thread was common, making jackets for men, and dresses for women. These were usually heavily embroidered as well.

LPs Columbia Records introduced the first 33 rpm “Long Play” records in 1948. The industry had been looking for a way to extend the playing time on records that until then had been about 4 minutes on 78 rpm records. By introducing a micro-groove, much more could be put onto a 12 inch record, and with the lower speed, playing time was increased to 30 minutes per side. They released mostly classical music, as it was thought that this market would be more inclined (and have more money) to purchase these records, and the new record players that had to be bought as well. The first commercially produced stereo LP record in 1957 featured the “Dukes of Dixieland” jazz group on one side, and demonstration tracks on the other side.

Electricity Meters The first electricity meters were patented in the US in 1881. A carefully weighed copper strip was suspended in an electrolytic cell at the start of the billing period. It was then taken away and weighed again at the end. This was laborious for the supply companies, and impossible for the consumer to check. With the advent of AC (alternating current), a meter controlled by a motor was invented, on a wooden board. The first ones weighed 23 kg, later reduced to 3 kg by 1914. As meters improved, models were introduced that could cater for day or night-time rates, and prepayment. Local or remote switches operated these new types. Electronic meters were in use by the 1970s with digital integrated circuits.

Insulin Diabetes has been known of for about 3,000 years. The only remedy was a change in diet that prolonged death by as little as one year. In 1921 a group of Canadian researchers proved that diabetes was caused by an insulin deficiency. Insulin was first obtained from the pancreas of slaughtered cattle. In 1922 a teenage diabetic sufferer was given insulin injections in a Toronto hospital and improved dramatically. Two of the senior researchers were awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1923. In 1932, the University of Toronto, who had patented their insulin production, released the formula free of charge. In 1955 research into amino acids led to another Nobel prize and more refined insulin products.

Pressure Cookers The first rudimentary pressure cookers were invented in the 17th century and called “digesters�. In the 19th century they were still very cumbersome and one of the chief uses was cooking food in battlefields by army cooks. It wasn’t until the 20th century that they became found in domestic kitchens. During World War II, with scarce supplies, they became a means of preserving things like berries by making jam, and breaking down bones for gravy. They were fairly fearsome additions to domestic kitchens, made of heavy gauge aluminium and weights that allowed the steam to exit when the pressure was sufficient. In the 1970s recipe books appeared, and a new use was for breaking down foods such as soya beans.

Almería: Land of Film

O

fficials in Almería city have been working hard to promote Almería province as the perfect location for national or international film makers. They have now set up their own film office to publicise the attractions, and lobby film directors. One proposal is that they will provide guided tours to interested film makers and fly them here for a preview.

Nevertheless, an enormous amount of money flowed into Almería province. This film was followed by the filming of “Claudius”, a smaller budget film and another biblical film, but again putting Almería province on the film directors’ map. Terry Gilliam

One of their initiatives has been the placing of pavement stars, like the Hollywood ones, to record particular locations where parts of famous films have been made in Almería city, along with individual stars for film directors and actors. The latest such star was unveiled in early December, coinciding with the “Almería short film” festival. The recipient of this one was Terry Gilliam, film actor and director, of Monty Python fame. In 1988 he directed the film, “The adventures of Baron Munchausen”, in the Cabo de Gata area, and other locations. Terry Gilliam is looking for locations for his next film, “The man who killed Don Quixote”, and after a guided tour of the area to refresh his memory, it is hoped that Almería may be the location for this film. His 2011 film “The Wholly Family” was shown at the film festival. The same thing happened when Arnold Schwarzenegger came to Almería last year, to unveil his star from the “Conan the Barbarian” film. He brought with him the director of a sequel film “Conan”, where locations are being selected. When Sir Ridley Scott came to Almería to film “Exodus: Gods and Kings” along with Christian Bale, two pavement stars were prepared. Unfortunately neither of them considered they had time to even see them, much less unveil them. The Almería culture department solved this problem when “Claudius” was being filmed here. They took representative stars to the film set and presented them to Kevin Reynolds and Joseph Fiennes there!

Sir Ridley Scott needed to have his film available for release in December 2014, for nominations for film awards. He just managed it, on December 12th in the US. Unfortunately, many film critics severely attacked the film for various reasons. It was branded “racist”, “historically inaccurate”, and a bad example of “white-washing”, the term given to a film when characters who should be black or dark skinned, are portrayed by white actors. Scott replied that without the casting of big-name actors, the film would never have been made, and that those seeking to boycott the movie on such grounds should "get a life!" Another critic said that the historical accuracy “was so different, that if they didn’t use the Biblical names and had released the same movie with a different title, I might not have even recognized it!" The film was banned in Egypt, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, and Morocco, for having too many religious mistakes not just about Islam, but other religions!

The really major recent event for the province was the filming of “Exodus”, then changed to “The Book of Exodus”, and then when released, “Exodus: Gods and Kings”. The casting sessions for extras were an Perhaps all the bad publicity and reviews will be utter shambles, when enormous numbers of good for Almería province!

The PITA Science Park

T

his year is going to be an exciting year for the Almería “PITA” Science & Technology Park. Anyone travelling along the A7 motorway towards Almería will have seen the impressive buildings alongside the motorway at the El Alquián junction, just five kilometres from Almería airport, and eight kilometres from Almería University.

Activities vary widely, and have included specialist ideas such as breeding butterflies in captivity, marketing beehives, Spanish language courses for Japanese people, and high-tech cooking techniques. Apart from the El Aquián site, there is an Almería University sister unit, dedicated to actual scientific investigation. Some projects are undertaken for the very important agricultural industry in Almería province, particularly relating to agriculture in very dry desert areas. The PITA park by the motorway is designed to provide office space for high-tech companies, conference facilities, and exploit the “coworking” concept where individuals or small companies share a common work area. Since the park was opened there are now 61 companies using the main “Pitágoras” multi-purpose building with a total of 255 workers. Many individuals find that the “coworking” system is ideal. Antonio Cruz took his small business to the park, specialising in graphic design, marketing strategy using the latest computer tools, and design of exhibition stands. He found that there were other individuals, or partnerships, working in either the same or allied areas. A main group was set up, incorporating these various individuals, to provide a comprehensive service. The company 'Rehabitár' is made up of two architects and technical experts in the design of buildings that are high in energy saving and use of efficient construction techniques. Their specialised design service is available to other architects or construction companies. Last year there were a total of 50 conferences and meetings, with 3,000 people taking part. All the various themes were the application of science and technology to a wide range of businesses, designed to be a way forward for companies to extend their horizons. Another project related to the use of the internet, web page building and electronic marketing

Very soon, the park will obtain a tremendous boost, and large numbers of employees. A new custom built centre will house a partnership between the 'Cajamar' banking group and 'IBM'. The object is to improve and explore the technological advances, as applied to the Cajamar group, but also core banking. The 'IBM' offshoot company 'INSA' will be the main technology company, and their work is intended to be adaptable to a large range of international companies. 'Cajamar' and 'IBM' have signed a 10 year collaboration agreement with a capital injection of 15 million euros, and a work force of 250 employees initially, rising to 700. The Spanish company 'Dicsa S.A.' is also waiting to move into a new building. This company specialize in the manufacture and marketing of hydraulic components, pneumatic couplings, and stainless steel industrial pipework. The aim of their centre at the Almería park is to improve their technological capabilities with research and development investigations and 3D imaging. They will offer workshops for the use of their products in industry, and technical help for clients to obtain the necessary trade certification. Exciting times!

Corruption in High and Low Places

S

tarting about two years ago, some major Spanish corruption cases began to emerge that relate to a large number of politicians, captains of industry, and directors of banks. Every month, a survey of the preoccupations of the Spanish population is published. Related to previous years, in 2009 less than half of 1% of people were worried about corruption. Last December, this percentage hit 62%. The highest profile case concerns the brother-inlaw of the present King Felipe, Iñaki Urdangarin. He has been implicated in a major corruption scandal where a charitable sports foundation he and others set up funnelled money out for their own use. A long prison term is very likely. His wife, Christina de Bourbon, 6th in line to the Spanish monarchy, may well be complicit in these financial dealings, but the Spanish equivalent of the Crown Prosecution Service, and the Spanish tax authorities have been treading on eggshells to keep her out of any court case. However, she has now been included with 14 others facing charges. If convicted, in theory she could be given a prison term.

Iñaki Urdangarin & Cristina de Bourbon

Another major scandal concerns Luis Bárcenas, the former treasurer of the PP party now in government. Details emerged of a large “slush fund”, with major contributions to the party by various companies or individuals, with payments from it to him and politicians. He personally sent money abroad to tax havens, switching accounts frequently. His gains were initially estimated at 22 million euros, but then doubled. Since June 2013, Bárcenas has

been on remand, as it was claimed he was still switching money around, but he was released on bail just a few days ago. In our part of the world, Gabriel Amat is the mayor of Roquetas (for a very long time) and is also chairman of the Almería “diputación” (county council). There is a pending court case concerning ten luxury houses, with the accusation that the land was not zoned for this development, so nothing new here! He and the other council members, who approved the construction in May 2007, will also be in court. In our own “Levante “ area, such court proceedings occur almost monthly. The increasing trend is that if a building licence was granted where it shouldn’t have been, the mayor(ess) and all council members who approved the licence, builders, and developers finish up in court. The mayoress of Antas, three councillors, the promoter and the architect have been given prison sentences of 12 months, and a ban on holding public office, or working as a promoter or architect for 7 years. Cándido Trabalón, ex-mayor of Zurgena but still a councillor, has had various visits to the courts. The judge in the latest one handed down a 15 months prison term, and a 9 year ban on holding public office, to him and the councillors who voted to approve 202 dwellings, with an extra “illegal” storey. Pedro Llamas has become known internationally as the mayor who nodded through the development in Cantoria where the four houses belonging to ex-pats were demolished. He was given a 24 months prison term. Some of these sentences may well be appealed, but Pedro Llamas has been through that and lost. So far, no-one has seen the inside of a prison cell, because these are all “suspended” sentences, unless further convictions take the totals to over 24 months. There is one important consideration. Any mayor or councillor who has a confirmed suspended prison term, that goes past May 24th this year, certainly cannot stand in the municipal elections. This seems completely fair and it will also badly hurt their pockets!

Almería The Almería city band are performing an open air concert entitled “Música de cine” (Film music), on February 8th, at 10.30am at the Parque Nicolás Salmerón. On February 15th they perform another open air concert entitled “Música Española” (Spanish music), at noon at the Parque del Andarax. The last of these three concerts takes place on February 22nd at 5pm, entitled “Música para los niños” (Children's music), at the Parque de las Familias”, all in Almería city. What’s On Roquetas Auditorio La Aventuras de Peter Pan y Campanilla, a musical for children is performed on Sunday, February 15th at 12 noon. Tickets are 12 euros, or 15 euros on the day. El Fantasma de la Opera (Phantom of the Opera) comes to Roquetas auditorio on February 21st at 9.30pm. It features 80 musicians and 60 singers. Tickets are 25 & 30 euros. The ABBA symphonic spectacular is performed on Saturday, March 7th at 9.30pm. This is the same company who produce the Queen symphonic rhapsody spectacular. There is an orchestra, rock group, and 50 performers. Tickets are 25 & 30 euros.

Exhibitions The Almería periodical 'Ideal', (to mark their existence in Almería for 40 years), has paid for the restoration of the historic document when Almería city signed the agreement in 1498 to come under the rule of the Roman Catholic Kingdom, when the population of Moors were defeated by their forces. This document and others can be seen at the Almería museum until March. The photographer Ilan Wolff has a collection of 88 photographs at El Centro Andaluz de la Fotografía (CAF), in Almería city until February 15th. The photographs are an important record of buildings, places of interest and personalities taken throughout Andalucía. The exhibition is open from 11am-2pm, and 5.30pm9.30pm, every day.

What’s On Arboleas The Independent Theatre Group presents the traditional family pantomime “The Wonderful Sto r y o f M ot h e r G o o s e ” . Performances are at the Teatro Pedro Gilabert in Arboleas on Friday and Saturday, February 6th & 7th at 7.30pm, and Sunday, February 8th at 3.30pm. Doors open 30 minutes before all performances. The carnival procession takes place on February 21st, starting at the Plaza San Francisco, Calle San Leonardo, Calle Rulador, Avenida Lepanto, and ending at the Pabellón Municipal de Deportes. The children's procession is at 5pm, and the adults at 10pm.

Carnival Huércal-Overa Carnival. The children’s procession terminates in Plaza Mayor followed by games and live entertainment on Friday, February 13th. Saturday, February 14th is the carnival procession for adults, and the presentation of prizes in Plaza Mayor. Mojácar carnival takes place from February 13th-15th. No other information available at time of going to press. Águilas carnival kicks off on February 12th, with the opening ceremonies. On Saturday, Feb 14th, there is a regatta at the port, starting at 11am, prizes presented at 6.30pm. The first main procession is on Sunday, Feb 15th, the second on Tuesday, Feb 17th, and the third and final one on Saturday, Feb 21st, followed by the closing events and fireworks display. Birthday Treat

I went to the cinema the other day and in the front row was an old man and with him was his dog. It was a sad funny kind of film, you know the type. In the sad part, the dog cried his eyes out, and in the funny part, the dog laughed its head off. This happened all the way through the film. After the film had ended, I decided to go and speak to the man. "That's the most amazing thing I've seen," I said. "That dog really seemed to enjoy the film." The man turned to me and said, "Yeah, he did! He hated the book!"

There is a fellow talking to his buddy and says, "I don't know what to get my wife for her birthday. She has everything, and besides, she can afford to buy anything she wants. I'm stumped." His buddy says, "I have an idea. Why don't you make up a certificate that says she can have two hours of great sex, any way she wants it. She'll probably be thrilled!" The first fellow does just that. The next day, his buddy asks, "Well, did you take my suggestion? How did it turn out?" "She loved it. She jumped up, thanked me, kissed me on the mouth, and ran out the door yelling, 'I'll see you in two hours!'"

The Blonde A guy took his new blonde girlfriend to her first American football game. They had great seats right behind his team's bench. After the game, he asked her how she liked the experience. "Oh, I really liked it," she replied, "Especially the tight pants and all the big muscles, but I just couldn't understand why they were trying to kill each other over 50 cents." Dumbfounded, her date asked, "What do you mean?" "Well, they flipped a coin, one team got it, and then for the rest of the game, the man just below us kept screaming 'Get the quarterback! Get the quarterback!' I'm like, hello? It's only 50 cents!"

The Wives Three men were sitting together talking about how they had told their new wives what their household duties were to be. The first man bragged he had told his wife to do all the dishes and cleaning. He said it took a couple days, but on the third day he came home to a clean house and clean dishes. The second man bragged that he had given his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. On the first two day he didn't see any results, but by the third day, his house was clean, the dishes were done and he had a huge dinner on the table. The third man said that he told her to keep the house clean, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed and ironed, and hot meals on the table promptly. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything, but by the third day most of the swelling had gone down and he could see just a little out of his left eye. Enough to fix himself a bite to eat, load the dishwasher and the washing machine, find a cleaning lady, and telephone a gardener.

The Line Up Police in Los Angeles had a robbery suspect who had worn a balaclava helmet when he robbed a shop at gunpoint. They found another five men for a line up, gave each one a balaclava, and told the shop owner that all of the men would be asked to say, "Give me all your money or I'll shoot." When they got to the fourth man, he said “That's not what I told him! I said if he didn't give me all the damn money, I would waste him!�

...and next... The Bulls A couple goes to an agricultural show and are watching the auctioning off of pedigree bulls. The guy selling the bulls introduced the first one, "A fine specimen, this bull mounted a cow 65 times last year". The wife nudges her husband in the ribs, and says, “That was more than 5 times a month!" The second bull was led in, “Another fine specimen. This wonder mounted a cow 130 times last year." Again the wife bugs her husband, "Hey, that's more than 10 times a month. What do YOU say to that?!" The husband is getting really annoyed when the third bull is walked in. "And this extraordinary specimen did it 365 times last year!" The wife slaps her husband on the arm and yells: "That's once a day, every day of the year! How about YOU?!" The husband yells back, "Sure, once a day! But ask the auctioneer if they were all with the same cow!!!"

The Lawyer A man walks into a lawyer’s office and asks "How much do you charge?" The lawyer replies "$250 for three questions." The man says, "Gosh! Isn't that expensive?" The lawyer replies "Yes it is. Now, what's your third question?"

The Request Father O'Grady was saying his good-byes to the parishioners after his Sunday morning service as he always does when Mary Clancy came up to him in tears. "What's the matter my dear?" asked Father O'Grady. "Oh, father, I've got horrible news,” replied Mary. "My husband passed away last night." "Oh, Mary! That's terrible. Did he have any last requests?" "Yes...," Mary replied softly. "Well?" “He said, 'Please, Mary, put the gun down'."

The Plumber On a public holiday, a doctor has some trouble with his kitchen sink. He calls the local plumber, only to be told that it's his day off. "But I get called out on my days off too!" says the doctor, somewhat exasperated. So the plumber relents. The plumber arrives, and glances over the sink, looking preoccupied. He mumbles something about golf, then hands the doctor a couple of aspirin and walks out, saying, "Put these in. If it doesn't clear up in 24 hours, call me tomorrow."
