Christmas on the Way!

Last month we commented on the good weather in our province with storms, flooding and high seas in many parts of Spain. November weather has been identical in both respects so we are very fortunate in our province. The inquiry into the devastating DANA floods in the Valencia region on October 29th last year, is still on-going and we comment on this in our “In the News” section.

The sale price of new cars from 2006-2013 has resulted in hefty fines because 28 manufacturers artificially fixed their prices and formed a cartel. New purchasers of cars during this period should be entitled to compensation and we explain the steps to claim it in an article. Also, in our “In the News” section we explain why the Spansih ‘Hacienda’ (Tax department) have been told that they have not allowed enough tax relief on property morgages taken out before 2013 when the property was sold. Another article deals with reward schemes that banks have introduced to attract new on-line customers. Finally, an article comments on the radioactive soil at Palomares that was a result of a mid-air collision in January 1966. Further removal of radioactive soil has never been done.

The Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería city has a new outpatients and consultant building that has cost 34 million euros, and 500 new healthcare professionals are being employed for this and other departments including doctors surgeries in our province. Unfortunately, parking at the hospital and nearby is almost impossible as work has started on the new multi-storey car park. The major problems in November will get worse this month during a new construction phase.

This time of the year has varied entertainment with a Christmas theme and we list some of these and others in our “What’s On” section.

Saturday, December 6th, is a major national fiesta day to celebrate the signing of the written constitution in Spain in 1978. Monday, December 8th, is another national fiesta but this is a religious

one. Taking a short holiday with either the day before or the day after tacked on is known as a “puente” (bridge) and present indications are that hotel bookings are very good. Monday, December 22nd, is the day of ‘El Gordo’ (The fat one) lottery. Sales of tickets are phenomenal as the first prize of 400,000 euros goes to people who have bought a single ticket with the right numbers costing 20 euros.70% of the ticket sales, that are usually about 2.5 billion euros, is prize money.

Chistmas Eve, Wednesday 24th, is when family members living away try to come home for a special meal, so some Spanish restauarants will be closed in the evening but will reopen on Christmas Day. Christmas Day and Thursday, January 1st, are public holidays and on Wednesday, December 31st, New Year’s Eve, when a famous clock in Madrid strikes at midnight, a grape has to be eaten at every stroke, along with a glass of Cava to wash them down!

Tuesday, January 6th, is a very important day for children, another national holiday. “Los Reyes Magos” (the Three Kings) is the day when Spanish children receive their presents. Children write letters to their favourite King telling them what presents they hope they might receive. The night before, in many municipalities, the Three Kings tour the streets on floats, throwing sweets into the crowd and Garrucha is a prime example.

As in other years, there will be no ‘Focus’ magazine in January but we will return in February. We wish all our readers and advertisers a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

An Almería Diputación Scandal

On Monday, November 17th, at 7am, in the second phase of an investigation, anti-corruption police executed search warrants at the headquarters of the Almeria Diputación (County council). They were looking for evidence of bribes and illegal commissions in the purchase in 2020 of 500,000 face masks, 250,000 pairs of surgical gloves and 11,000 aprons at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The purchase contracts amounted to 2 million euros, but the police allegation is that the true cost was about 60%. Simultaneously, they arrested the PP party President, Javier Aureliano García, the Vice President, Fernando Giménez and the mayor of Fines, Rodrigo Sánchez. Five other arrests following search warrants took place at homes and business addresses of entities allegedly linked to criminal activities. The Andalucía High Court indicated that, based on the order authorising the UCO searches and empowering the arrests that it deemed necessary as “there are wellfounded suspicions of the commission of acts that could constitute crimes of bribery, embezzlement of public funds and money laundering”. A spokesperson from the Junta de Andalucía stated that Ángel Escobar will assume the Presidency of the Diputación on an interim basis.

Houses Regularised

Since as long as twenty years ago, several municipalities in the Almanzora Valley made headlines due to the proliferation of illegal housing. These were buildings that didn’t comply with urban planning regulations but were allowed to be built, sometimes with dramatic consequences for their buyers, such as living without basic services or even facing demolition. This situation generated real fears and a legal limbo for thousands of residents, many of them Brits, who chose to live in municipalities such as Arboleas, Albox or Zurgena, and in many cases were retired purchasers. Arboleas municipal council is finalising the procedures to regularise one of the neighbourhoods, namely Los Requenas, which will benefit approximately 57 home owners. The mayoress, Pepa Rodríguez, states that, “They now have the plot of land registered in their name at the Property Registry and it serves to open

the doors to other areas with the same problems, which adds up to another 17.”

Torrecárdenas Outpatients Department

On November 17th, the new ‘Bahía de Almería’ building for outpatients and consultant appointments at the Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería city was opened, that has cost 35 million euros. The Andalucía Regional Minister of Health, Antonio Sanz, announced the “immediate” addition of 514 new healthcare professionals. They will be distributed in the new department, hospital care, primary care (medical centre surgeries) and will reinforce the teams dedicated to breast, colon and cervical cancer screenings and X-ray departments. Antonio Sanz indicated that Almería will receive “priority treatment” from the Andalucía Regional Government regarding personnel, and along with Seville and Málaga, is the third province to receive the most new healthcare workers “in recognition of the existing needs.” He also announced he incorporation of new equipment.

Stable Employment

The new labour laws in Spain state that workers have to be given permanent employment contracts. Temporary contracts can only be signed for an unforeseen surge in sales or services, or to cover employees not working because of illness or maternity / paternity leave. Almería province is the first province in Andalucía for job stability and the third nationally, only behind the Balearic Islands and Murcia, according to the 2025 Labour Market Report of the Province of Almería, prepared by the Observatory of Occupations of the State Public Employment Service (SEPE). The report confirms a structural change in the Almería labour market and permanent contracts have not only increased but have also become more established, while temporary contracts have fallen by 2.5%. For parttime contracts, the female presence continues to be especially relevant. 31.52% of the women hired this year were on part-time contracts, while among men this percentage drops to 14.17%. One of the keys to the general transformation lies in the rise of fixed-term intermittent contracts, which now represent 30.89% of the total. These types

of contracts, primarily associated with seasonal sectors such as agriculture and hospitality, place Almería well above the Andalucía and national averages. With these contracts, an employee is considered to be an employee in low seasons but are not paid. When the high season starts again they are employed and paid. In the times when they are not working they can receive unemployment benefits. By sectors, construction leads in job stability, with a rate of 77.67% of indefinite contracts, a record figure that reflects the strength of a key sector in the provincial economy.

Dental Check-Ups for Children

The Minister of Health in the Andalucía Regional Government, Antonio Sanz, has announced that that the Andalucía Health Service (SAS) has launched “an active patient recruitment campaign by contacting families by phone to offer children a dental checkup appointment at their primary care centres.” In the first phase, the families of six-year-olds will be contacted, and in the second phase, those of twelve-year-olds. Antonio Sanz stated that “The SAS has also expanded dental care to people with disabilities, pregnant women, and cancer patients, with specific pathways and trained professionals. In 2023, the public health system provided 608,621 consultations. In 2024 this number rose to 626,783, and between January and October of this year, 414,590 consultations have already been provided. In the 0-5 age group, the demand for consultations under the Children’s Dental Care Plan increased by 44.3%, in 2024, but in 2025 this growth reached almost 140%. Fillings performed in the 6-15 age group and dental cleaning has also increased in both age groups.”

Almería Province Nationalities

Provisional data from the National Institute of Statistics as of October 1st is that the province gained 11,952 inhabitants in the previous 12 months, reaching 779,673. This increase is not due to births, but rather to new arrivals, and 8,509 new residents are foreign nationals, representing 71% of the growth. If Spanish nationals are included, born outside of Spain, it rises to 9,897. The majority of these new residents are between 20 and 39

years old, and this sector adds to the workforce as they become employed or self-employed in the main areas of advanced technology, agriculture, construction, logistics, and hospitality, as well as the commercial and service sectors. The 0-9 age group has decreased slightly compared to the previous year, a sign of a low birth rate, although this effect is offset by the arrival of young people of childbearing age. In addition to the working population, the province continues to attract retired European or UK residents, especially in the Levante region of Almería, boosting the real estate market and related services.

Pre 2013 Mortgages

The Central Economic Administrative Court (TEAC) that is part of the Ministry of Finance, has overturned the criteria maintained for years by the Tax Agency ‘Hacienda’. Prior to 2013 any person with a mortgage on their main home was allowed to claim 15% tax relief on their mortgage payments, principal and interest, of up to 3,000 euros per annum. If your repayments were 3,000 euros or more, the tax relief of 15% was 450 euros. This was stopped in 2013, but the Hacienda still allowed the 15% to be claimed for a “transition period” from 2013 for people who had a mortgage from 2012 or before. This still applies and if you took out a mortgage in 2012 for 25 years and keep paying until it is paid off, the 15% relief will continue until 2027. Figures from the Hacienda for 2024 reveal that they allowed the 15% reduction for 2.7 million taxpayers that came to 2 billion euros. The 15% is deducted in the income tax declaration document known as “La Renta” that has to be completed by June 30th every year for the preceding calendar year. If you sold the property and used part of the proceeds to pay off the mortgage the Hacienda gave the 15% relief calculated from the instalments you made to the day before or the day the mortgage was cancelled when the property was sold. When a person pays off a mortgage they have to pay the outstanding balance known as the “amortisation” amount. The Hacienda have maintained that this amount was merely part of the transfer process and there was no 15% tax deduction allowed on this amount of money. This

has now been overturned so the Hacienda have to take this into account and the 15% tax relief applies to a maximum repayment of 9,040 euros (including the monthly repayments), so a maximum tax relief of 1,356 euros. From now on, starting this year, when a property is sold and the pre 2013 mortgage is cancelled, the 9,040 euros limit applies. However, a tax return can be amended for the last four tax years, so from years 2021 to 2024. If you have sold a property in these tax years with a mortgage cancelled from pre 2013 the difference of 15% of up to 9.040 euros can be claimed back. If you are in this situation, consulting the person who does your annual “Renta” return is very important. You have to have the documentation that shows when the mortgage was cancelled, the monthly payments and the amount of money paid to terminate it. Tax experts state that at present, this rebate will apply to many thousands of people. This does not apply to sales before 2021, which are outside the four year period for back tax amendments. There is one other consideration that the court has specified. If you paid off the mortgage with funds not from the sale price, so from savings, the new allowance still applies.

Almería Airport

At the World Travel Market in London in November, the recovery of a daily flight with Barcelona and new connections in 2026 with Poland and the UK from Almería airport were announced. The Minister of Development, Territorial Planning and Housing in Andalucía, Rocío Díaz, has sent a letter to the Director General of Airports (AENA) with the aim of conveying both proposals and observations on airport plans for Almería airport from 2027-2031. Regarding planning, the Regional Government stated that the central government “must distribute resources equitably across all regions, rather than concentrating them heavily in the Madrid and Barcelona airports.” Specifically, it requested that the Almería airport be considered for an expansion of the terminal, a functional design, and runway improvements to “adapt the airport to modern growth and standards, preventing it from becoming obsolete.” They include enlarging the terminal to handle seasonal traffic, establishing

new routes, increasing seating capacity, adding more international destinations, improving flight frequencies and reducing prices. Regarding this last demand, noting that ‘AVE’ high-speed train will not arrive until 2028, Rocío Díaz stated, “It is opportune to declare the Almería-Madrid route a mandatory public service that is subsidised, lowering ticket prices”. This designation only applies at present to the subsidised Almería-Seville route that has been declared to be a “necessary public service” for several years.

Ryanair Digital Boarding Passes

Since November 12th, Ryanair will only accept digital boarding passes and the paper versions will no longer be accepted. According to the airline, this change aims to offer a “faster, smarter and more sustainable” travel experience. Passengers will have to use the digital card generated in the ‘myRyanair app’ during the check-in process in order to board their flights. Currently, 80% of passengers already use the digital version. The company have announced that if passengers don’t have a smartphone or tablet, as long as they have already checked-in online before arriving at the airport, they will receive a free of charge boarding pass at the airport. However, they will not be able to access real-time flight updates or benefit from enhanced customer service during any flight disruptions. If you have already checked-in online and your smartphone or tablet dies, or is lost, you will receive a free of charge boarding pass at the airport.

Albox Industrial Estate

The Ministry of Development, Territorial Planning and Housing of the Andalucía Regional Government has awarded a contract costing 828,988 euros to build a direct access to the Albox industrial estate from the Almanzora A-334. The company, ‘Construcciones Nila’ will have five months to carry out the work that will complete the longawaited project for the industrial estate that was inaugurated in 2009. The works will consist of the construction of a new 705m road which will run from the industrial estate to the roundabout at the entrance and exit of the A-334 at km 68. It will allow

heavy traffic to enter it directly without having to use the town centre, improving road safety. It will also give direct access to the ITV (MOT) station. The Almanzora Motorway has an average daily traffic volume of 9,590 vehicles and 17% are heavy goods vehicles.

A Tragic Anniversary

October 29th last year was the day when the devastating ‘Dana’ floods hit the region of Valencia. The death toll is 229 that includes one person whose body has still not been located. A major investigation presided over by a judge is still underway and testimony has been taken from a wide variety of people and organisations. On September 29th the President of the Valencia Community, Carles Mazón, was notified by the judge in a letter that he would be called as a witness as there are various discrepancies relating to his activities and timescale during the afternoon. It is undisputed that he was having lunch with a journalist and made her a job offer. She has now stated that they did not leave the restaurant until 6.45pm (he has said it was 5.45pm) and phone calls he received or made, showed no signs of concern. The first “red alert” weather notification from AEMET, the meteorological body, was made at 7.30am with continual updates. The Emergency Coordination Committee did not convene until 5pm and the President arrived at 8.30pm. The ES-alert notification was not made until 8.10pm because noone was sure how it worked and what needed to be done. The watered-down message “to prevent panic” was only that people should not travel in the area, but by then a very large number of people had their homes and vehicles wrecked and had died, some of them trapped in underground garages. There have been continual calls during the past 12 months for Carles Mazón to resign, with many demonstrations, but he had not done this. The new revelation that he was still having lunch until 6.45pm on October 29th last year and then walked with the journalist to where her car was parked, has added considerable fuel to the fire. Four days after the 12 month anniversary, the day when the journalist was scheduled to give evidence to the inquiry, Carles Mazón finally resigned. He appeared

at the main inquiry where he was supposed to answer questions, but instead, he gave a series of small speeches blaming everybody else. At a session in parliament on November 17th he was forced to answer questions and received a very rough ride. Spokespersons from political parties and the Association of Affected Families were given time slots to question him. The first person started off by telling him that he murdered 229 people, and it didn’t get much better! Another MP held up photographs of people who died between 5pm and 6.45pm and asked him, “Where were you when they died?” He answered his own question every time, “You were in a restaurant”. Carles Mazón continuously maintains that he was not a member of the emergency committee, and he did not therefore have to attend and there was no existing protocol in place, which is not true. Placards at continual demonstrations now ask for him to be put be trial and sent to prison for criminal negligence!

Longer Leave for Deaths and Care

The Second Vice-President and Minister of Labour, Yolanda Díaz, has announced that her ministry will present a new regulation to modify the Workers’ Statute and extend leave for the death of a close family member up to 10 days and incorporate a new leave for palliative care of family members. Currently, workers are entitled to two days of leave for the death of a first and second degree relative (father, children, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren), which can be extended to four if they need to move to another location. Regarding the new leave for palliative care, Díaz has stated that the regulation is already drafted, as well as “worked on and discussed” within the Government, but without any exact details. The new plan will have to be accepted by unions and if so, will come into force sometime in the future, probably during 2026.

Junta de Andalucía Elections

Juanma Moreno and the PP party (roughly a Conservative Party) have been in power with a majority in the Junta de Andalucía Parliament since 2022. There will be elections in 2026 and at the

17th congress that the PP held in Seville over the weekend of November 8th-9th he was confirmed as President by 99.95% of the votes. Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, Pablo Venzal, Maribel Sánchez Torregrosa and Gabriel Amat, PP politicians who come from Almería province, were also confirmed as holding senior positions. The Almería city council and the ‘diputación’ (county council) are also led by the PP party and although there shouldn’t be any bias, municipalities led by the PP are often favoured. Funding and projects are usually approved quickly and this applies, amongst others, to the PP party in power in Mojácar.

The Best Electric Cars

The Spanish OCU (Organisation of Consumers and Users) has published a list of what they consider to be the best purely electric vehicles in various categories. They quote the theoretical range from all the manufactures and what they found driving on motorways and dual carriageways. Within the urban category, they opt for the Leapmotor TO3, a Chinese car that is part of the Sellantis range and is available from 18,950 euros. The OCU state that it has 200kms of range in theory, but it was 160kms in practice. Among the utility vehicles, it is the Peugeot 208 equipped with a 51kWh battery, which is available from 29,800 euros, has 315kms in theory and 255kms in practice. In the compact category, they choose the Volkswagen ID.3 with a 77kWh battery. The price is from 37,750 euros, with a range of 425kms in theory and 345kms in practice. Among sedans, the chosen one is the Tesla Model 3 with a 75kWh battery. It is available from 40,490 euros and in September it was the best-selling electric car on the market. It has 525kms range in theory and 415kms in practice. As regards urban SUV’s they opt for the Kia EV3 with an 81kWh battery. It is another of the bestselling models on the market and the price starts at 41,705 euros, with a range of 475kms in theory and 380kms in practice. In the compact category it is the Volkswagen ID.3 with a 77kWh battery from 37,750 euros, with a range of 425kms in theory and 345kms in practice. The best compact SUV is the Skoda Elroq with a 77kWh battery from 39,700 euros with 440kms in theory and 355kms

in practice. Finally, as a large SUV, they opt for the Toyota bZ4x, available from 34,500 euros, with 430kms in theory and 345kms in practice. All the above prices are without the Spanish discounts that are available of up to 7,000 euros with conditions.

A Tsunami Simulation Test

On Thursday, November 20th, at 10.14am, a simulation alert for an earthquake in the sea and a tsunami took place in Cádiz. All municipalities that have a tsunami threat, including all of them in our province on the coast, have to have warning signs, ones that indicate where inhabitants should congregate (horizontal evacuation) and then go to high ground or tall buildings (vertical evacuation), and there has to a test of their plans. The necessary signs that will normally be in Spanish and English are already in place in Cádiz. 20,000 personnel from a variety of services including police, civil defence, the Red Cross, the health service, ambulance and firefighting fleet and the UME military took part. An E-Alert emergency message was put out, to be received on all mobile phones, but it stated it was only a test. People in municipal public buildings, schools and colleges and ones near the port were instructed to congregate at the selected horizontal evacuation sites and then go to a high area or buildings more than three storeys high for vertical evacuation. Various hotels were included that were more than the necessary height with access to their roofs. Sirens were deployed, police had megaphones and church bells were rung. The test was announced in advance but the exact time between 10am-11am was not, so it could be as realistic as possible. Following the alert the emergency was analysed to see if there were deficiencies in the response and how it could be improved. In the event of a real tsunami, the reactions and response will have to be extremely quick.

New Traffic Laws

The DGT (The Spanish Traffic Authority) is proposing an amendment to article 31 of the traffic regulations to create lanes for emergency vehicles in the event of heavy traffic or traffic jams. On a dual carriageway, vehicles on the left will have to

drive at the extreme left, and ones in the right-hand lane as far to the right as possible. This will create a centre lane between the two for emergency vehicles. In the event of there being three or more lanes, vehicles on the left must go to the extreme left, with vehicles on the right moving over to create a similar emergency lane. The DGT states that “this modification responds to the need to establish a clear and legally enforceable protocol for emergency situations. We want drivers to know exactly how to act when there is a traffic jam and the emergency services have to be allowed to pass.” The measure has been well received by police and associations of firefighters and health services, who have been calling for a specific regulation to be introduced for several years. These changes, still in the processing phase, could come into force in the coming months, once they pass the public consultation process and final approval in parliament.

The Spanish Economy

The Moody’s, Fitch and S&P agencies rate the economic progress of countries and they have all given Spain very good ratings. They all consider that the economy is very good and resilient and Spain has far less exposure to the Trump tariffs compared to other European countries. Moody’s have raised their rating for debt from Baa1 to A3 and Fitch has raised their rating from -A to A and S&P have adjusted their rating from A to A+. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) consider that in 2026 GDP (Gross Domestic Product) will be above 2% and the IMF (International Monetary Fund) is predicting it will be 2.6%. The Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, Carlos Cuerpo, has stated that, “With the three agencies giving Spain an “A” rating, this underlines the confidence in solidity and good prospects of our economy.”

Brain Surgery Whilst Awake

A private Red Cross hospital in Córdoba has carried out a pioneering brain surgery operation whilst the patient was awake. The operation was led by neurosurgeon Cristóbal Blanco, accompanied by a multidisciplinary team of neurosurgery, anaesthesia, neurophysiology and nursing, whose coordination is essential for the success of this type of highly

complex procedures. The patient, a professional musician, had a brain tumour in a particularly delicate area between the areas of language and motor skills. The location of the tumour meant that any intervention had the risk of irreversible neurological damage. During the operation, the patient remained awake for an hour and a half and he collaborated with the team to monitor functions such as language, fine coordination and motor skills in real time. He played a small keyboard piano and talked to the surgeon, and the fact that Miguel is a musician allowed the surgical control to be refined so that the removal of the tumour did not compromise essential capabilities. After the operation, the patient remained in the Intensive Care unit for two days and was then moved to a general ward until he was discharged.

Glove Compartments

The DGT (The Spanish Traffic Authority) is warning motorists that there are several items that should not be kept and left in a vehicle glove compartment. These include house keys, a spare car key and documentation that gives driver information such as insurance details with the vehicle owner’s address, or any other paperwork with the address. Traffic police can tell from their on-board computers if a car is insured and whether or not it has a valid ‘ITV’ (MOT). They stress that with personal details that give an address and house keys, thieves can gain access to the house without breaking in, after they have broken into the vehicle. Information regarding break down assistance is a good idea, but many of the plastic cards that give this help can be kept in a wallet or handbag.

Non-Alcoholic Gin

Non-alcoholic gins cannot be labelled with the word “gin.” The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has ruled unequivocally in a judgement that considered the complaint from a German alcoholic drink association. The court has prohibited the sale of non-alcoholic beverages bearing a label referencing the distilled spirit. The German company ‘PB Vi Goods’ sells and promotes, among other products, a non-alcoholic beverage called “Virgin Gin Alkoholfrei” (alcohol-free virgin gin) and they

will no longer be able to use this labelling. This will also apply if a company markets a similar product labelled “non-alcoholic brandy”.

Israel Embargo

Faced with the situation in Gaza, Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, has forcefully stated that, “Spain fully recognises the right of the State of Israel to exist and to defend itself. We condemn the terrorist attacks by Hamas and we demand the immediate release of the hostages. But it is one thing to protect your country and another thing to murder 60,000 civilians and starve innocent children, they are very different things.” Consequently, the Spanish Government has passed a new law that reinforces one in place since 2023. It relates to military equipment supplied from Spanish manufacturers to Israel and the acquisition of Israeli items for use in Spain by the military. It also denies Israel’s ability to tender for Spanish military contracts. Pedro Sánchez has stated that its purpose is to establish “the legal

and permanent prohibition of buying and selling weapons, ammunition and military equipment to and from Israel by providing legal shielding for possible lawsuits and multimillion-dollar compensation that may be filed by Israeli companies for being excluded from public tenders”. It also applies to companies that are in the areas occupied by Israelis. A technical amendment that has been introduced will allow the control of certain aircraft fuels that have been excluded from the legal framework until now. Two problems are that the disconnection with the Israeli military industry threatens the training of Spanish attack pilots and the maintenance of the F-5 fighters that depends on a Hebrew firm at present. The Spanish military are being instructed to source items that they need from alternative companies. There have already been some cancellations and one of the first ones occurred about three months ago. A contract for the purchase of 15 million bullets for the Guardia Civil Police was cancelled that drew an immediate rebuke from Israel.

Father Christmas

Christmas wouldn’t be the same without Father Christmas. He is portrayed as a big bearded, rosycheeked and jolly man. The alternative name is “Santa Claus”, and this comes from the Dutch word ‘Sinterklaas’. This is the name in Dutch of Saint Nicholas who was a Christian bishop that lived in the 4th century. He is reputedly known for being kind and generous to children and he became their patron saint. Father Christmas first appeared in the mid-17th century in the aftermath of the English Civil War. His character was maintained during the late 18th and into the 19th century by plays, later known as “mummers’ plays”.

Christmas Puddings

The Christmas pudding originated in the 14th century as a sort of porridge, originally known as “frumenty”, which bears little resemblance to the pudding we know today. It was originally made with hulled wheat, boiled in milk, seasoned with cinnamon and coloured with saffron. It was associated with meatless days, lent and advent and was often served as a plain dish. A variety of recipes included beef, mutton, raisins, currants, prunes, wines and spices. It was the Victorians who finetuned the recipe into the Christmas puddings that we eat and enjoy today.

Christmas Cards

The custom of sending Christmas cards, as we know them today, was started in the UK in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole. He was a senior civil servant who had helped set-up the original Post Office. Sir Henry had the idea of producing commercial Christmas Cards with his friend John Horsley, who was an artist. They designed the first card and sold them for 1 shilling each. The card had three panels and the outer two panels showed people caring for the poor. The centre panel was a family having a large lavish Christmas dinner. Some people didn’t like the card because it showed a child being given a glass of wine!

Christmas Trees

Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort, is usually credited with having introduced the Christmas tree into England in 1840. However, this tradition in the United Kingdom rightfully belongs to ‘good Queen Charlotte’, the German wife of George III, who set up the first known English tree at Queen’s Lodge, Windsor in December 1800. Legend has it that Martin Luther, the German religious reformer, introduced fir trees with candles into homes in 1536. He had seen bright stars around fir trees in a forest and in his home they were a reminder to his children that the starry heavens were where the Saviour came from.

Advent Calendars

An Advent calendar, from the German word “Adventskalender”, is used to count the days of Advent in anticipation of Christmas. It was first used by German Lutherans in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1945 the calendar started from December 1st with 24 little doors but some calendars had more than one little door per date, the Christmas Eve one in particular, and Advent Sundays could also have additional doors. Advent calendars gained nationwide popularity in the UK in the 1950s when it was a mass-produced article and sold at affordable prices. Some of them were provided by specialist religious publishers.

Mistletoe

Mistletoe is a semi-parasitic evergreen plant that grows on trees. It attaches itself to host trees like oak, apple, and maple to draw water and nutrients, and its waxy white berries and leaves are poisonous if ingested. In the Norse culture, the Mistletoe plant was a sign of love and peace. Legend states that the goddess Figg lost her son, the god Baldur, after he was killed by an arrow made of mistletoe. After his death, she vowed that she would kiss anyone who passed beneath so long as it was never again used as a weapon. Early custom was that men were allowed to steal a kiss from any woman caught standing under it.

60 Radioactive Years

During the Russian and US “cold war”, the US “Operation Chrome Dome” kept B-52 bomber planes in the air 24/7, and each one had four nuclear missiles. On January 17th, 1966, a KC-135 tanker plane from the US base at Morón de la Frontera near Seville was in the air to refuel one over Palomares but the planes collided at 31,000 feet. The four nuclear missiles were jettisoned and three landed on farm land with one in the sea. Seven of the crew members died but amazingly, no-one from Palomares was injured or died.

Two of the nose cones broke on impact releasing radioactive plutonium dust over a wide area. 1,600 members of the US Air Force and civilians came to Palomares with a flotilla of 25 ships, 150 divers and four submersibles to find the one in the sea. A fisherman from Águilas eventually told the divers where it had come down and it was recovered after it became detached on the first attempt to raise it. Nearby, some Russian ships arrived that heightened the tension.

Radioactive soil was loaded into 4,800 steel barrels over several weeks, put on ships and taken to an underground storage area in Georgia. Members of the military and the civilians only had face masks and many of them later contracted cancers, but it was not until 2022 that President Biden accepted claims for compensation. Health experts consider that one radioactive micro-gramme of plutonium, if ingested, could lead to possible cancers, and US nuclear experts calculate that the dust released was more than 3 billion micro-grammes.

The immediate area was cordoned off and entry prohibited, and this is still in place today, 60 years later. Ecologists claim that there is still radioactive soil that was ploughed in and that the affected area greatly exceeds the official one. Court cases to try and compel the Spanish Nuclear Department to remove the soil have failed because there is nowhere to keep it in Spain.

There have been many meetings with the US to get

them to come back and remove the rest of the soil with several promises, but no action. In 2015, John Kerry, then US Secretary of State, came to Spain to thank the authorities for allowing more ships and personnel at the Rota naval base and signed a “non-legally binding memorandum” that the soil would be taken away. Before President Biden left office there was a meeting with Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, who stated that they had constructive talks. The estimated cost is 640 million euros over 18 months with the soil being taken to Cartagena, partly a Spanish navy base, where it would be loaded onto US ships. There is no current optimism that President Trump will continue with the plans.

José Ignacio Domíngez from the Ecologists in Action organisation is very concerned because the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) has approved the environmental aspect of a proposal for the PA-4 sector at Palomares. A very large project is for 936 homes in four storey buildings, another 664, a hotel, 200,000m2 of green areas, 1,000 parking places, sports areas, and a 2.2km promenade. José Ignacio states that the Junta have only considered that the fenced off area has radioactive soil, but this is not correct. Heavy machinery and vehicles were hosed down on the Quitapellejos beach in 1966 and plutonium dust leeched into the soil. He considers that excavation work for the new complex will result in contamination from the subsoil and will be very dangerous.

Online Banking Offers

Over the last few years Spanish banks have been declaring extensive profits, and they have money for incentive schemes. Currently, there are monetary rewards if a new customer opens an online account and doesn’t have an existing current account. With a joint online account, the offer only applies once. You can’t get the incentives twice.

Some of them expire at the end of December and others during January, but they will almost certainly be replaced with new ones. There are a lot of conditions and anyone opening an account has to study them closely and compare them with other banks. Normally, there is no commission for opening the account or the use of debit cards but if you don’t make enough transactions the rewards may be reduced.

The BBVA bank has an offer until January 8th and their “headline” reward is 760 euros “gross,” but this is only 616 euros “net”. This is because any reward money will be treated as a capital gain by the ‘Hacienda’ (the Spanish tax office) who will want a minimum of 19% tax. Looking at offers to see whether they are gross or net is very important. A new client receives 400 euros per annum (paid out at 33 euros per month) if the monthly salary (‘nomina’) is over 800 euros. There is a reward of 120 euros (20 euros per month) for making a certain number of Bizum transactions and the same amount for using their debit card, as well as direct debits. Unusually, there is no minimum term.

This is a fairly standard set of conditions but the Caixabank Bank throw in a Samsung phone with three models depending if your nomina is over 900 euros, 1,500 or 2,500. You have to have three direct debits a month and use your debit card three times every quarter and the account has to be for a minimum of 48 months. How the Hacienda will work out the tax will depend on the phone model, and Caixabank give the price of 759 euros for the most expensive one.

Alternately, they are giving away a Samsung TV from 33 ins to 55 ins with a top value of 599 euros. This offer is valid until December 31st.

Grupo Cajamar offer 750 euros gross / 608 net on a sliding scale with 300 euros for a nomina from 1,500 euros to 2,449, 500 euros from 2,500 to 3,999 euros, and 750 from 4,000 euros. The account has to be for 36 months, and it is officially available for the first 3,000 applicants.

Banco Santander has an offer of 400 euros gross / 324 net. It is 300 euros if your nomina or a monthly pension is over 600 euros per month with an additional 100 euros if over 2,500 euros. The fixed term is 24 months until January 14th. Deutsch Bank gives 500 euros gross / 405 net if your nomina is over 2,000 euros until January 15th with no fixed term.

The Abanca Bank offer 500 euros / 405 net for a mimum nomina over 1,200 euros that goes up depending on the amount of the nomina or 185 euros / 150 net from 800 to 1,200 euros. The account has to be opened by December 31st for 24 months with no debit or credit card charges for 12 months. Online accounts from the ING and Sabadell banks have now gone past their offer dates, but new ones are expected.

All the above terms were correct at time of going to press as far as we are aware.

Vehicle Compensation Claims 2006-2013

The Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y La Competencia (CNMC) is a government body that rules on mergers to ensure that they are not against the public interest, and investigate cartels, where there has been an agreement to fix prices. They are empowered to raid companies if they think there are practices they wish to investigate and seize documentation and digital files. Major investigations of cartels by power companies and fuel providers have resulted in enormous fines.

They have fined 28 major vehicle manufacturers, including Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, Hyundai, Jeep, Kia, Lancia, Lexus, Nissan, Opel, Peugeot, Renault, Seat, Skoda, Sling, Toyota, and Volkswagen, for engaging in anticompetitive practices and agreeing on the sale prices of their vehicles from February 2006-August 2013 by forming a cartel. Because of this, claims for compensation can be made

Purchasers of brand new or km0 cars and ‘mixta’ vans during this time period should be entitled to compensation, even if they subsequently sold the vehicle, and it also applies to new vehicles leased or rented. Owners of second-hand vehicles from this time period cannot submit a claim. The compensation, that can be substantial, is given as from 2,000-9,000 euros, that is from 10% to 15% of the purchase price.

www cartel.es (as an example) is a compensation company that handles these claims and only receive a commission if a claim is successful, with no upfront fees. If a person goes onto their website they can see if compensation is due after submitting the make of car, the model, year and month of purchase and vehicle registration number. If this indicates that you are entitled to compensation the next step is to formulate a claim, and www cartel.es will then process it after receiving the documentation that is needed. The companies www sobrecosrecoches. com, www reclamaportucoche.com and www xataka com, amongst others, will also process these claims. The amount that they will charge for successful applicants is difficult to determine but the company www asesority.com quotes 15% plus IVA (18.15%)

whilst www afectadoscochescartel.es state that it is 30% plus IVA, (36.3%).

Alternatively, La Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU) www ocu.org is a large Spanish Consumer Organisation with 179,000 members that a person can join for 15,65 euros per month with a 50% discount for the first 12 months. For these claims there is a minimum membership of 36 months totalling 469,50 euros. Their special website is www carteldecoches.ocu.org. If the claim is successful before the 36 month period the monthly payment can finish at this date if a person wishes to terminate it. For members who receive compensation they charge 17% plus IVA (20,40%) and 25% plus IVA (30,25%) for non-member “friends”. However, membership means that they will process claims for a variety of reasons, not just this one, provide legal assistance, discounts on a wide range of purchases, and they have mortgage, electricity and gas price comparison information.

Claims have to be made by June 2026 according to some of the companies, but apparently there is a different date depending on the manufacturer. Whilst individual claims will be registered, in cases like these they will normally be pooled, and a single “class action” claim for all of them will follow just prior to the deadline. The OCU clearly state that this is how they will handle them. The period of time to receive the compensation is given as up to 18 months after the claims are submitted.

Obviously, all the companies want your claim but their commission is very variable

Everything will be alright in the end. So, if it is not alright...it is not yet the end!

As 2025 draws to a close, The Indalo Players are proud to announce that after forming 26 years ago, they have just completed one of their most productive and successful years. They have performed 3 diverse productions, kicking off with Agatha Crusty And The Village Hall Murders in February, followed by Over The River And Through The Woods in May, culminating in their recent 5 performances of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel at The Espacio Cultural Theatre in Los Gallardos. This particular production had one of their most intricate and exquisite sets and largest cast and crew to date. Feedback from the 600 people who saw it have highly praised how professional this play was, offering incredible first class performances, inspiring laughter, tears and deep-rooted emotion in the audiences. The cast presented a truly brilliant story; portraying everything life throws at us - sadness, loss, inspiration, joy, hope and companionship...including a happy ending!

Each production takes months of preparation, rehearsals and dedication. And the icing on the cake is that with the public’s interest and support, The Indalo Players are able to raise large amounts for local charities. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel helped the folllowing allowing them to hold raffles. PAWS-PATAS 483 euros,Turre Food Bank 475 euros, Stepping Stones 413:23 euros, and The Bédar Band ran the bar raising a grand total of 972 euros.

plans being put together for 2026 and if you would like to attend their Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 4th December, please come and join us at The Puntazo Hotel in Mojácar at 10:30 for an 11:00 start whereby we will also reveal the grand total raised from all the productions for local charities this year plus our annual major donations. PAWS-PATAS Update

Time for a monthly “pup-date” and what a great way to start the month, having found loving homes for 25 dogs & 6 cats during October. It’s why we do what we do. Thank you to all the families that have given these previous members of PAWS-PATAS family their new beginnings

Further good news is our October Bingo Lunch at The Snug raised 590 euros and October’s book sale 347.40 euros.

More “thank you’s” to the many people and organisations that raised and donated money to us which are too many to mention here.

Every week is “Funday Sunday” @ Zeppelin from 9pm. Jukebox DJ-1 euro a song and all proceeds to PAWS-PATAS

Los Bandidos Storm the Desert

Twelve Los Bandidos runners took on the XVII Carrera Desierto de Tabernas on Sunday 16 November, conquering a challenging 10k route under perfect race conditions: bright sunshine, 25°C, and a light breeze. The course, mostly dirt tracks and wide ramblas, offered 172 metres of elevation gain. It opened with a fast downhill before turning into a long, steady climb. Midway through, runners faced several short but sharper ascents leading up to the refreshment station. The second half rewarded them with smooth descents across sandy sections—ideal for those with energy to spare—before the course saved its sting for last: a steep final climb past the castle and back towards the sports centre finish. All competitors received a goody bag with a

sleeveless 42K running top, black snood, energy bar and Aquarius drink.

Out of 162 finishers, the overall winner crossed the line in 37:23, with the first woman in 41:25. Los Bandidos delivered outstanding performances across the board, with standout results from Gail Colville and Keith Cotter, who each secured second place overall in the women’s and men’s categories. In addition to podium places for the top three overall, only age-group winners received medals. As Gail was unable to collect hers, Derek proudly stepped up on her behalf—a true Bandidos moment! About Los Bandidos

Founded in June 2018 with a handful of runners on the Mojácar Paseo, Los Bandidos has grown into a thriving multisport community, now embracing road cycling, sea swimming, and triathlon. Zambomba Flamenca is a flamenco concert organised by the Entre Flamencos organisation to celebrate the origin of flamenco in Spain 600 years ago, at the auditorium on Friday, December 19th at 8.30pm. Tickets are 15 euros.

The group Pica Pica perform a Christmas concert intended for children with carols and excerpts from their latest album at the auditorium on Saturday, December 27th at 5pm. Tickets are 22 euros.

The Queen Symphonic Rhapsody Orchestra come to the auditorium on Saturday, January 10th at 9pm. Tickets are 35 euros.

I figured that at age seven it was inevitable for my son to begin having doubts about Santa Claus. Sure enough, one day he said, “Mum, I know something about Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy.” Taking a deep breath, I asked him, “What is that?” He replied, “They’re all nocturnal.”

The Twins

A father had twin boys but they were different in every way. The only similarity they had was that they looked alike. If one twin said he was too hot, the other twin complained it was cold. If one said the TV needed turning up the other said it was too loud. Opposite in every way, one always saw the best in everything, whilst the other was all doom and gloom. To see what would happen, the father, on Christmas Eve loaded the pessimistic twin’s bedroom with every toy imaginable. The optimistic twin had his bedroom filled with horse manure. The father wondered how they would respond. At 7 am the next morning the father heard activity. He went to the pessimistic twin’s room, and found him crying bitterly. “Why are you crying?” he asked. The boy said,” My friends will be jealous, and it will take me ages to unwrap all these presents without tearing the paper - and then I have to read all the instructions! I’ll constantly need batteries and half of the toys will finish up broken!” The father went to see his optimistic twin son who was shouting with joy and up to his armpits in the manure. “Why are you so happy?” he asked. His son said, “Wonderful - there’s got to be a pony in here somewhere!”

Good King Wenceslas

Good King Wenceslas rings up a local pizza restaurant to order a pizza. “Certainly your majesty” says the manager “will it be your usual? Deep pan, crisp and even?”

The Hard Test

One year, Father Christmas is forced to have an official from the Aviation Authority check his sleigh to make sure it’s airworthy. The official checks out the sleigh on the ground then sits beside Father Christmas for a test flight. Suddenly Father Christmas notices the official has a revolver. ‘What’s that for?’ he asks. ‘You’re not a hijacker are you?’ ‘No,’ replies the official. ‘But we have to see how you handle this craft when you lose an engine on take-off.’

Vow of Silence

At a monastery high in the mountains, the monks have a rigid vow of silence. Only at Christmas, and only by one monk, and only with one sentence, is the vow allowed to be broken.

One Christmas, Brother Thomas is allowed to speak and he says, “I like the mashed potatoes we have with the Christmas turkey!” and he sits down. Silence ensues for 365 days. The next Christmas, Brother Michael gets his turn, and he says “I think the mashed potatoes are lumpy and I hate them!”

Once again, silence for 366 days (it’s leap year). The following Christmas, Brother Paul rises and says, “I am fed up with this constant bickering!”

Blonde Christmas Story

There were two blondes who went deep into the frozen woods searching for a Christmas tree. After hours of subzero temperatures and a few close calls with hungry wolves, one blonde turned to the other and said, “I’m chopping down the next tree I see. I don’t care whether it’s decorated or not!”

Christmas Present?

A man’s wife has an artificial leg. Shortly before Christmas, he buys her a new prosthetic and hides it in the closet. Unfortunately, she finds it and confronts him with the artificial limb. “This wouldn’t, by any chance, be my Christmas present, would it?” she asks. “No, of course not.” responds her husband. “It’s just a stocking filler.”

Santa’s Lap

As a little girl climbed onto Santa’s lap, Santa asked the usual, “And what would you like for Christmas?” The child stared at him open mouthed and horrified for a minute, then gasped, “Didn’t you get my E-mail?”

A Car For Christmas

Danny had recently passed his driving test and decided to ask his clergyman father if there was any chance of him getting a car for Christmas which was yet some months away. ‘Okay,’ said his father, ‘I tell you what I’ll do. If you can get your ‘A’ level grades up to ‘A’s and ‘B’s, study your bible and get your hair cut, I’ll consider the matter very seriously.’

A couple of months later Danny went back to his father who said, ‘I’m really impressed by your commitment to your studies. Your grades are excellent and the work you have put into your bible studies is very encouraging. However, I have to say I’m very disappointed that you haven’t had your hair cut yet.

Danny was a smart young man who was never lost for an answer. ‘Look dad. In the course of my bible studies I’ve noticed in the illustrations that Moses, John the Baptist, Samson and even Jesus had long hair.’ ‘Yes. I’m aware of that...’ replied his father ‘... but did you also notice they walked wherever they went?’
