It’s August - Phew!

I

f July is anything to go by, the roads, particularly in the coastal resorts, will become gridlocked with traffic again. The population of Mojácar and other nearby beach areas can quadruple during August when Spanish Nationals head to Almería province from Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia and other parts of Andalucía. So will it be the same this year? Rental companies are reporting that in general they have bookings for the first two weeks and the following two weeks, as opposed to 2008 when they had shorter stays. If this happens across the board, then this is more the pattern we have experienced in earlier years, and would confirm that holidays are something we all want to have despite the economic situation. The weather in the UK was predicted as a "barbecue summer" for July, and instead it has rained, so more UK tourists may decide to make last minute bookings where the sunshine can be guaranteed.

Focus on Local News Fire Evaluation The Mayors of Turre, Garrucha, Vera and Mojácar had a post-fire meeting on July 25th in Almería with housing and environment delegates from the Junta de Andalucía and Civil Protection chiefs. Miguel Corpas, National Government delegate from the Junta de Andalucía, told the mayors that financial help would be given to municipal property damaged in the recent fires and also money for expenses and costs of personnel. This would also be extended to neighbouring councils who, whilst not directly affected, sent personnel. Miguel Corpas also promised help to individual property owners who had suffered damage and asked such people to approach their town halls where a co-ordinator would collate damage reports.

Domestic Water Problems On Thursday, June 23rd, the day of the second fire that engulfed Turre and Mojácar regions, there was a major breakdown affecting domestic water. The searing temperatures caused a high voltage fault in overhead lines that short circuited 10 pumps. The areas affected as a result included Huércal-Overa, Zurgena, Vera, Antas, Garrucha, Cuevas del Almanzora, Pulpí, Los Gallardos, Arboleas, Carboneras, Turre and Mojácar. Two new pumps were sent from Bilbao to try and provide a minimum of water and water lorries were sent out. By Saturday evening, July 25th, 90% of the population affected had water again following the installation of new pumps. Initial rumours that

the water had been cut off to aid fire fighting were not true. The Mayor of Huércal-Overa, Luis García, who is also president of the Mancommunidad association of town halls in the Levante region congratulated 'Galasa', the water supply company, for working round the clock to restore supplies. Creamfields Festival Work was started during July of erecting the perimeter fence, toilet blocks and provision of rubbish containers at the Guardias Viejas beach in El Ejido for the Creamfields Festival on Saturday August 15th. It was intended that this was completed by August 3rd when work would start on the erection of the stage, lighting gantries and backstage areas. There are no camping facilities this year. Juan Baños, the councillor from El Ejido responsible for the festival stated on July 25th that 10,000 tickets had been sold. 'Sinnamon Music', the organisers, are hoping for total ticket sales of 25,000. The festival opens at 6pm on the 15th until 9am Sunday morning. Car Plan 2000E The Junta de Andalucía, regional government for Andalucía, which includes Almería province, is setting aside 15 million euros towards the new vehicle purchase plan '2000E'. This means that 500 euros is available in Andalucía for the purchase of each of up to 30,000 new vehicles. The plan '2000E' provides a discount of 1,000 euros from the manufacturer, 500 euros from central Government and 500 from the autonomous regions that agree to support this initiative. Andalucía has 271 companies that provide components for vehicles and 550 sales outlets, providing employment for 30,000 people. The plan applies to the purchase of new cars and vans where the purchase price is less than 30,000 euros and the new vehicle emits between 120-149 grams of CO2 per kilometre (cars) and under 160 (vans). The vehicles taken in part exchange and scrapped must be a minimum of 10 years old.

Focus on Local News continued 3 Years On The drivers’ points system for traffic offences came into force on July 1st, 2006. José María Méndez, head of the Almería Traffic Department, recently released figures for the last 3 years. Overall accidents have declined 30% and most importantly deaths have fallen by 45%, although 157 people were killed. 27,000 motorists lost points and 310 lost all of their 12 points. 23,000 male drivers were sanctioned and the age group was mostly between 25-44 years. One male over 75 and one under 14 (!) lost all their points. 329 people recuperated up to 4 points lost after attending courses. 265,000 drivers who had lost no points whatsoever had their total increased by 2 points. In 2008, 24,000 drivers were reported for speeding, having no driving licence or no insurance, or both. These figures were considerably less than other provinces in Andalucía.

New Boat & Helicopter During 2008, over 50% of the 3,000 would be immigrants who arrived at the Spanish coast were rescued off the Almería coast. This work, and responding to accidents and emergencies at sea, is carried out by the Guardia Civil police and the Maritime members of Salvamento Marítimo. Recently, a new patrol boat, the "Guadamar Caliope", and a very modern helicopter, a "Helimer 207", were presented to the Almería authorities by Jesús Miranda Hita, from the Spanish Ministry of Transport. The "Caliope" is a 30 metre modern patrol boat with space for 30 rescued people, with a speed of 30 knots. It is equipped with every rescue facility and is one of only 3 vessels of this type in Spain. The helicopter is an AW 139 model with seating space for 15 persons and can travel at 300 kilometres an hour. It can operate in poor visibility, rain and adverse weather conditions. Flu Vaccine Following current guidelines from the World Health Organization, and contingency plans by Spain, vaccination details are emerging. The two-dose vaccine against the A-H1N1 flu' in Almería will involve 114,000 children under 14, nearly 11,000 teachers, 7,500 Health employees, 1,000 Guardia Civil police and another 1,000 other police and firemen. Pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses or severe obesity will also be included. It is anticipated that initial vaccination will start in October. Electricity Demand 'Sevillana Endesa', the electricity supply company, has published figures that show a decrease in electricity produced, and therefore sold, of 4.4% in the 1st quarter of 2009. This is the largest fall in demand since 1987. Endesa say this is caused by less industrial demand, particularly from the marble and cement industry, along with a fall off in hotel occupancy. 2008 figures showed a fall as well, with an increase in demand throughout the year of only 1%, the lowest annual increase since 1992

Focus on Local News continued Sun Powered A 13-seater mini bus powered by the sun has been put into regular use at the Tabernas Solar Centre. The vehicle has been built by the company 'Centro Land SCA' and the solar panel provided by the Valencia company, 'Atersa'. The solar centre staff contributed to the design that enables the vehicle to achieve a top speed of 50 km/hr. This is the first fully solar powered vehicle to be put into continuous use in Spain. The mini bus will be used to take visitors round the installations at the solar centre.

Focus on Local News continued 2am and 4am. The bus is intended to provide a safe method of travel for young people and provide an alternative to travelling by car. Each journey costs 1 euro and the bus will run until the end of August. Cabo de Gata-Níjar Evaluation European inspectors recently visited the Cabo de Gata National Park to assess the present situation. They inspected the visitors' centres along with hostels, diving centres and craft workshops. Cabo de Gata-Níjar park is designated as a "Geopark" which gives internationally recognized status both legally and as regards the environment. The "Geopark" status is awarded by 'UNESCO' and has to be inspected every 3 years. The natural park is the only such area recognized in Andalucía and one of only 4 sites in Spain. Almería New City Hall July 20th saw the first City council meeting in the new council chamber following 5 years of work and a budget of 5 million euros. Unfortunately the city councillors were not impressed! They complained of inadequate light, both natural and artificial, inadequate sound coverage and insufficient climate control, complaining that the temperatures were stifling. The project had been designed and party funded by the Junta de Andalucía (governing body) but with input from the council members and Almería city. Juan Megino, a city councillor responsible for building work commented that as a result they would look with a magnifying glass at all aspects of phase 2 of the city hall development. Town Hall Grants 98 town halls of the 102 in Almería province have been allocated their share of 5 million euros, destined to pay debts and embark on new projects. Various conditions have been worked out such that Benitagla receives the smallest grant of 14,581 euros and Huércal-Overa the largest of 213,000 euros. 2.3 million euros is earmarked for paying off debts and 2.7 million

for new projects. Each town hall has been given 10,000 euros with additional amounts for population ranging from 20 euros per head of population where there are less than 500 to 1.5 euros for the largest municipalities. Additional amounts have been paid for geographical location and centres of population.

Travelling with Pets The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), that is the Spanish Traffic Authority, has issued guidelines for people travelling with pets. They remind car users that pets can be an important distraction whilst travelling. On no account must pets be loose within the vehicle. A dog that weighs 20 kilos, in the case of a serious accident, can be projected forward at a force equivalent to 600 kilos. Large dogs must be behind a strong divider and special harnesses, similar to seat belts, are recommended. Small dogs and cats should be placed in a pet transport cage to stop them moving about and aid their location in the vehicle, or in the case of medium size dogs a harness restraint is recommended. A container must not be secured on the front passenger seat where there is an airbag. It is recommended that domestic pets are not fed for 12 hours before a long journey and are exercised regularly on the journey at rest stops.

Focus on Local News continued Less Lottery Ticket Sales The 357 sellers of 'ONCE' lottery tickets in Almería province have sold 9% less tickets in the first 6 months of 2009, which is more than the fall of 5% nationally. Manuel Alborch, president of the Almería delegation considers that people buy lottery tickets with the obvious intention of winning, but when times are harder spend less. The 357 lottery vendors are not in danger of losing their jobs as central government hopes that more people can be given work by the 'ONCE' organisation. All lottery sellers employed by 'ONCE' have some sort of physical impairment although 60% exhibit no external signs. On June 24th, the special San Juan lottery resulted in 16 million euros being won by people in Aguadulce and Roquetas, and since then 10.5 million was shared between ticket holders in Almería city.

Mojácar Parador

No More Parador Hotels Yet Almería City and Vícar have been told that there is no provision in the plan 2009-2012 for a new State Parador Hotel at either suggested location. Almería City had put forward plans to turn part of the castle into a Parador and Vícar hoped for a new Hotel near the motorway, giving access to beach and surrounding countryside. The only Parador Hotel in Almería province is that of Mojácar, built as a new project, rather than a conversion of an older building, in 1966. In 2008, it was given a face-lift and new areas opened.

Roquetas Botanical Garden The Mayor of Roquetas, Gabriel Amat, and Clemente García, Junta de Andalucía delegate for the environment, opened the new botanical park in Roquetas recently. The new park is called 'Jardin del Sol' (Garden of the sun) and is in Calle La Molina. The park covers 5,000 m2 with 1,000 m2 of free space where visitors can relax and view the various areas. 3,000 plants and 90 trees have been planted with over 150 species represented. Zones include an Andalucian garden, Mediterranean garden, Tropical and Oriental garden along with areas of fruit and cereal production. Apart from being a tourist attraction it is intended that the new botanical park becomes a focal point for organised visits by young people who can see all the various plants and trees in one area. Lucainena Green Way Lucainena de las Torres is creating a "Green Way" from 5 km of the old railway to Agua Amarga. The rail line was in use until 1931 and carried iron ore extracted in Lucainena. The ore was treated in local ovens and then transported to Agua Amarga where it went to Bilbao by boat. The conversion project has a budget of 300,000 euros from Lucainena and the Mancomunidad and will be completed by October. It is intended that the new green way is used by cyclists and walkers with rest areas and viewing points along the route. Heart Monitors Widely Available From August, every health centre that has more than 1,500 registered patients will have a semiautomatic heart monitor machine. This will mean that 52 centres in Almería province will incorporate these portable machines as part of their standard equipment. Operators need to have taken a course and at present 675 people are authorised to use these machines ranging from health professionals to Red Cross and Civil Protection personnel. The equipment is connected to a patient considered to have suffered a stroke or heart attack via electrodes and the patient's condition is monitored. If required, an electrical stimulus is given automatically.

So Now You Know... Vitamins Vitamins are special chemicals that the body needs to maintain chemical processes in cells. Plants produce their own vitamins but humans have to get most of the vitamins they need from food. This is why a poor diet can make you ill. The first vitamins discovered were given letter names like A, B and C. Later discovered vitamins were given chemical names. Vitamins A, D, E and K dissolve in fat and are found in animal fats and vegetable oil. Vitamins such as B and C dissolve in water and are found in green leaves, fruit and cereal. Vitamins D and K are made by the human body and vitamin D is essential for bone growth in children. Vitamin A is needed for night vision. Caves Caves are giant spaces or holes than run horizontally underground, whilst potholes are holes that go down vertically. The most spectacular caves are formed in limestone when acid rainwater trickles through cracks in the rock and wears away the material. The world's largest single cave is in Malaysia and is the Sarawak Chamber. The cave is so big that 3 giant sports stadiums would fit in it, with room to spare. The deepest cave yet discovered is in the French Pyrenees, called the Pierre St Martin gallery and is 800 metres below ground. The longest cave system is the Mammoth Cave in Kentucky USA that is 560 km long. Earthquake Prediction From the study of previous earthquakes, seismologists have decided there are two basic rules. If there has been no earthquake in a known earthquake zone for a long time, there is likely to be one soon! The longer the period the larger the earthquake could be. Places in an active earthquake area where there has been no activity are known as "seismic gaps" and seismologists predict when there is an earthquake it will be a big one. Measurements of minute movements of the ground are done with sophisticated laser survey techniques and satellites can track ground movement. The 'Keystone' system in Japan uses 4 satellites to monitor movement in Tokyo bay.

William Herschel Herschel (1738-1822) was an amateur astronomer who built his own very powerful telescope at his home in Bath, England. Until Herschel astronomers considered there were only seven independent objects in the sky. These were the Moon, Sun and five planets, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. In 1781 Herschel found a dot of light he thought was a star, but it had a tiny disc and the following night it had moved, so Herschel knew it was a planet. He wanted to call it "George" after King George 3rd, but eventually it was named as Uranus. His sister Caroline was another famous astronomer who catalogued all the stars in the Northern Hemisphere. His son John did the same for the Southern Hemisphere. Isaac Newton Isaac Newton (1642-1722) was the British scientist that first realised how gravity works. He is supposed to have first thought about this after he saw an apple fall from a tree in his garden in Lincolnshire. Newton worked out that gravity made things fall to the ground and planets orbit the sun, depending on their mass and distance. It also explained why the moon stays in orbit round the earth. Newton's law states that the pull of gravity between two objects can be found by multiplying their mass by the square of the distance between them. Using his formula astronomers have discovered more stars and planets. Gems Gems are mineral crystals and about 130 are known to exist. 50 of these are prized as being particularly attractive with distinct colours or sparkle. The rarest gems are known as precious gems and include diamonds, emeralds and rubies. Gems are weighed in "carats", that is, one-fifth of a gram. The word carat comes from the Arabic word for "seed" as gems were weighed in the ancient world by comparing them with carob seeds. Gems are formed in gas bubbles in cooling magma called geodes, or in magma itself from rock called pegmatite. Gems with a high melting point and simple chemical composition form directly from magma, such as diamonds (pure carbon) and rubies.

Ten Green Bottles

S

pain is pretty good at recycling waste packaging and in 2008 managed to achieve the EU target figures. Many Spaniards and nonSpanish still have difficulty understanding exactly what to do with their waste materials, so this month we are going to deal with glass containers such as beer or wine bottles. The recycling of all glass containers in Spain is done by a company called 'Ecovidrio', that provide the "igloos" for glass. They collect and transport their contents to specific sites in the autonomous areas and then sort and process them. The Spanish manufacturers, who under Spanish law are obligated to pay for the re-cycling and publicity campaigns, fund 'Ecovidrio'. Glass containers from Almería province and the rest of Andalucía are taken to Seville to a central processing plant. The fragments that leave the processing plant can be 100% recycled by the manufacturers and in 2008, 60.3% of all glass containers were recycled. Successful recycling firstly depends on bottles and jars being put in the "igloos". If they are put in the ordinary general "organic" rubbish bins this is not helpful, and if they are put in the yellow "plastics" bins there is a higher chance they will be recycled, but the "igloos" are where they should go. The other big problem for 'Ecovidrio' and the manufacturers is that glass containers are manufactured by a moulding process quite distinct from glass used in windows, wine or beer glasses, or anything we might think of as being made of glass and is not a container. The Spanish word "vidrio" refers to this type of moulded glass used in the manufacture of containers, quite distinct from "cristal" that is the word for the glass used in windows, mirrors or picture glass. If items made from "cristal" are put in the igloos they have to be removed at the processing plant, along with broken cups and plates, broken pottery items, lids and bottle tops. So "vidrio" is glass bottles for beer, wines, fruit juice, soft drinks, spirits and

perfume along with jars for sauces, jam, olives etc. There is one exception of course! Medicine bottles or jars should be returned to your farmacia together with unwanted or unused medicines with their packets and information leaflets. During 2008, 'Ecovidrio' recycled nearly 77,000 tonnes of glass from Andalucía, 7% up from 2007. They installed a further 1,878 igloos so that there is now one for every 353 inhabitants. The average per inhabitant for Andalucía worked out at 9.3 kilos. In Almería province the figures are not so good. At the end of 2008, there were 2,033 igloos throughout the province but only 3,218 tonnes of recyclable glass was collected, making an average of 4.8 kilos per inhabitant. So is this due to ignorance about recycling, indifference, or the igloos not being in a handy place? Probably a mixture of all of these things.

'Ecovidrio' have publicity campaigns and one of their most successful has been the introduction of fun games, with a glass-recycling message via Nokia mobiles. This is seen as an ideal way to reach young people. The bottles and jars recycled in 2008 throughout Spain are calculated as saving 392,000 tonnes of CO2, reducing the fuel used for the manufacturing processby 20%. So put your green, brown or clear bottles and jars in the green igloos, "por favor"!

Where We Live

I

n August, the normal population of coastal resorts in Almería province can triple or quadruple. Recently published figures show where permanent residents live in the Almería area and may well be enlightening to both tourists and residents as there are a few surprises. The main conclusion is that just over half the population live in just 7% of the available land! The total area of Almería province is just less than 8,800 square kilometres, about 3,500 square miles, and is divided into 102 municipalities with their own town halls. The largest municipality by far is Níjar, that starts soon after Almería airport and extends to Carboneras, the first coastal town down from Mojácar, and encompasses 600 square kilometres. The population as of January 1st 2009 is given as 26,000; an average population of 43 per square kilometre. If asked to name the next likely largest municipality residents may well plum for Roquetas de Mar, the other side of the airport, El Ejido (further along) or Almería city itself. It is in fact none of these, as this honour goes to Vélez Blanco, another mainly rural area of 440 square kilometres.

This is because Garrucha is squeezed in between the towns of Mojácar and Vera, and until a few years ago, when Mojácar gave it some land, was even smaller! Almería city has 635 people per square kilometre and nearby Huércal de Almería has 666. At the other end of the scale, the village with the smallest number of inhabitants per square kilometre is Bacares, with just under 3 residents! This picturesque village usually gets photographed if there is any snow, and if 283 visitors went there they would double the population! Going back to Vélez Blanco with 440 square kilometres the average population is just 5. Lucainena de las Torres does slightly better with 5.6 residents per square kilometre! Reverting to population numbers, Almería province has an official population of 682,000 as of January 1st 2009, and Almería city is home to 187,000; an increase of 11,000 in the last 5 years. Roquetas de Mar has increased its population by 24,000 over the same period, whilst Arboleas (inland near Albox) has gone from 2,000 to 4,300 inhabitants. UK residents probably account for most of this increase in Arboleas.

Overall, the population of Almería province has gone up by nearly 15,000 over the last 5 years, nearly all due to an influx of non-Spanish residents who now total 143,000 throughout the province. The non-Spanish population of Almería province is just less than 21%, over twice the average Bacares percentage of non-Spanish in the other provinces Roquetas de Mar is the place to go if you want to surrounding Almería, all of which are part of meet the most people! There are 1,300 per square Andalucía. kilometre, with a total population of 77,000. If asked to name the town with the densest August figures are totally different! The coastal population after Roquetas, most residents or towns in particular swell to full capacity, with visitors would probably not pick Garrucha, but this people, cars and beers consumed. If you are a town (just up the road from Mojácar) is in fact in visitor, enjoy your holiday!

Tourism Boost

T

he Spanish Government announced a new plan to boost tourism on June 24th. Regular cabinet meetings take place on a Friday in Madrid, but on this Friday the press conference and announcements were held in the Amudaina Palace in Palma, Mallorca. The tourism package has a budget of 1,030 million euros, over 1 billion euros. Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero considers that the promotion of tourism must be one of the central planks of government policy to re-vitalise the sector. Tourism has suffered badly from the national and international economic crisis, with falling numbers and less money being spent. Between January and June this year, tourists coming to Spain numbered 23.55 million, but this was a drop of 11% for the same period of 2008. UK tourists numbered 6.1 million but this was the largest drop of 16%. 4.2 million tourists came from Germany, a drop of 11%, 3.3 million from France down 9%, and 1.3 million from Italy, down 9% as well. This fall has been particularly noticeable in the Canary and Balearic islands, which is why the aid announcement was made in Palma de Majorca. 100 million euros will be devoted to this area.

The emphasis of the boost package is to promote Spain as a country that has much more to offer than just beach and sun holidays. 500 million euros of aid, 'Plan FuturE' is earmarked as finance from the 'ICO', State Credit Institute, and is for the improvement of energy savings throughout the

tourism sector, the improvement of access and i m p l e m e n ta t i o n o f m o d e r n f a c i l i t i e s . The chain of State 'Parador' Hotels, seen as a major tourist attraction is to be given 170 million euros for modernisation and the finance for the building of two new hotels. Almería province has made application for two new Parador Hotels, one in Almería city intended to be within the castle walls, and another in Vícar. The Parador in Vícar is planned as an entirely new construction project, close to the airport and the motorway, giving good access to both rural and coastal areas. Both these applications have been shelved until after 2012, after the current 2009-2012 Parador development programme comes to an end. As the only Parador Hotel in Almería province, at Mojácar, was re-opened in August 2008 after a major face-lift, no money from the new finance will come this way. The further promotion of Spanish cuisine will be undertaken with 2 million euros available in 2009, and 7 million in 2010. This is seen as a very worthwhile investment, another item away from the "beach and sun" idea. The Spanish International Tourism publicity agency, 'Tourespaña', is to be further funded with an injection of 7.4 million euros to extend and promote international publicity campaigns. National Parks are to receive a grant of 10 million euros to be spent on improvements to the infrastructure and provide additional local employment. The Cabo de Gata National Park in Almería province will benefit from this plan. Inspectors recently visited the park from 'Unesco' as the park has "Geopark" status from 'Unesco'. This status has to be renewed every 3 years. Cultural facilities are to be given a grant of 10 million euros, including the promotion of festivals and fiestas, as this is again seen as another area where a boost of tourism would follow such a promotion.

Andalucian Images 1910-1930, until September 2nd at Municipal Offices San José. The 162 photographs were taken for posters, stamps and albums, and are on tour from Barcelona.

Almería Museum has an exhibition of 19th century music making equipment from music boxes to gramophones until September.

Inma Herrero has an exhibition of watercolours until August 15th of Almería landscapes at the Tourist Office in Níjar.

The 2009 'Itinerate' travelling exhibitions of Photography, Sculpture, Painting and Recycled Art visit Arboleas, Fiñana, Huércal Overa, Santa Fe de Mondújar and Turre. The Photography tour is at Arboleas until August 9th and Huércal-Overa from August 13th. Sculpture is at Fiñana from August 12th. Painting is at Arboleas from August 6th. Recycled Art is at Turre from August 5th. The tours are sponsored by the Junta de Andalucía and rotate until January 2010. Each exhibition is for 1 month.

Henrica Kramers has an exhibition of paintings and sculptures from September 4th-30th at the Exhibition room in the Museum of Cuevas Castle. Open 10-1pm Tuesday to Sunday and from September 15th, 5pm-8pm as well. La Taberna del Puerto de San José has an exhibition of photographs taken when "Lawrence of Arabia" was filmed in Almería province, throughout August. The film will be shown in the Plaza Génova, San José on August 12th at 10pm.
