Easter is Here!

Trump’s war with Iran, that seems to have no clear objective that is a likely outcome, has affected fuel prices in numerous countries, including Spain. In an article we comment on how Spain is in a better position than many other EU states. We also comment on the plans that may be revised to shut all of Spain’s nuclear power stations between 2027-2035. In another article, we explain how his threat to cut all commercial links with Spain is very unlikely to take place and why this is tied up with the two US bases in Spain.

If the doctors’ strikes are not over, the dates for April are the 27th-30th but as we explained last month, accident and emergency departments are not affected along with dialysis and programmed cancer treatment. Some doctor’s surgeries may be shut, but in medical centres where there are multiple doctors, some cover may still be available.

This year, Easter Sunday is on April 5th and the very lavish Easter processions will stop. Churches have “brotherhoods” who organise the processions, and large statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary are manoeuvred out of the church and carried through the streets. In Almería city, in some cases where the statues are very heavy, a large number of men are under the platform, without being able to see where they are going, and they respond to instructions to make turns to the left or right. Street furniture has to be moved in some cases. Women and young ladies join the processions, and each church has a strict timetable as to when they leave the church and the route they take, which finishes up at the cathedral. They can cope with light rain when the statues are covered in polythene sheets, but gusts of wind can mean that they have to be cancelled.

As is normal, in our “What’s On” section, we list events that may be of interest to our readers. In our “In the News” section we explain that the much-needed roundabout at the entrance

to Garrucha on the road from Mojácar to Las Buganvillas has now been approved and will become a reality. We also comment on the VeraAlmanzora AVE (high speed train) station where the design has been finalised, and a company with a lot of experience with rail projects will supervise the construction that will keep pace with the completion of the whole line. There is a black cloud over the Pulpí to Vera section as there is an investigation as to whether the main construction company unfairly inflated the cost by a substantial amount that was not justified.

The Junta de Andalucía, the governing body for our province, have published an incentive scheme for the self-employed and small companies enabling them to buy, rent or lease new vehicles with a 3,000 euros grant. It is retroactive from January 1st and people can apply from Wednesday, April 15th. We give the details in our “In the News” section.

The whole of the Mojácar beach road and down to the sea is undergoing a major transformation. Apart from new electricity and water pipes being laid there will be an extensive cycle way. Beach bars have had to carry out modifications as to the land they occupy that in most cases is considered to exceed boundaries that are determined by the “Ley de Costas” (Coastal regulations).

Apart from the two national fiesta days relating to Easter, there are no other ones during April, but Friday, May 1st is a national fiesta date to celebrate “The Day of the Worker”.

It has come to our attention that an Englishspeaking man went into a business in Garrucha and tried to sell advertising space in this magazine and two other local English language publications. The sole advertising sales person for our magazine is Paul Flatters who has visiting cards and identification. The Guardia Civil Police have been informed that this happened and if any money changes hands for a fictitious advert it is a criminal offence. The New Drink-Driving Law

On Wednesday, March 18th, a committee of 37 MPs from all the political parties in parliament narrowly voted down the substantial reduction in the alcohol limit for all drivers that is being described as “Zero Tolerance”. There were 18 votes in favour and 19 against. The proposed new level would reduce the maximum blood alcohol level to 0.2 grams per litre of blood (0.1 milligrams per litre of exhaled air) that would apply to all drivers. The current amount is 0.5 grams of alcohol per litre of blood (0.25 milligrams per litre of exhaled air) that means that moderate consumption of certain drinks is not an offence. The modification would lead to changes in the driver points that could be lost. If it is 0.2 to 0.5 grams per litre of blood (0.1 to 0.25 milligrams per litre of exhaled air), offenders will lose two points off their licence and a fine of 200 euros. From 0.51 to 1 gram (0.26 to 0.50 milligrams per exhaled air), they will lose four points with a fine of 500 euros. Over 1 gram a driver will lose 6 points with a fine of 1,000 euros. There were various reasons why the 19 MPs voted against it including the fact it was decided by a committee and not debated in parliament by all MPs. Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, stated that he will reintroduce the proposals. A separate sanction of 500 euros will apply if people on social media publish the places where the police are conducting tests.

Andalucía Vehicle Subsidies

Last month we explained how the new ‘Auto+Plan’ subsidies work and Central Government will introduce a scheme for companies, not yet spelt

out. The Regional Junta of Andalucía will launch their own Vehicle Renewal Plan described as “the first incentive program aimed specifically at selfemployed professionals that will include a direct aid of 3,000 euros for the acquisition of an efficient non-electric vehicle, provided that another one more than 10 years old, with a current ITV (MOT), is scrapped”. This was announced by the Junta de Andalucía Minister of Industry and Energy, Jorge Paradela, at the Expo World Congress in Málaga on March 10th and 11th. He explained that “The incentives in recent years have been aimed at promoting the 100% electric vehicle, without a doubt a technology of the future that continues to advance, but that even today is not fully adapted to the needs of all users, such as self-employed professionals. They are a major part of the Andalucía economy and their activity depends, in many cases, on their vehicle. Their cars or vans are not a luxury item, they are their work tools. For this reason, we want to advance in the renewal of a fleet that is ageing by opening incentives to other technologies that are not electric, but that are also highly efficient in reducing CO2 emissions.” This plan, with a budget of 5 million euros, will be managed by the Andalucía Energy Agency for the purchase of cars and vans up to 3,500 kg, with a level of emissions equal to, or less than 120g CO2/km, with a price of up to 35,000 euros plus IVA (VAT). They must be new and registered for the first time in Spain, and can be acquired through direct purchase, financial leasing or renting with a period of four years for the incentive. The program has been designed to incorporate a high degree of robotization and simplification to reduce administrative management times with a 100% telematic processing, and the incentive will be paid within a maximum of one month from the time the application is submitted, without having to wait to present supporting documentation, (as is the case with the previous ‘MOVES’ schemes). The checks for compliance with the requirements will be carried out in an automated manner by the Energy Agency of the Junta. Jorge Paradela concluded his presentation by saying, “Transport is the sector with the highest energy consumption in Andalucía, representing 43.4% of the total final energy demanded, with

a dependence on petroleum derivatives that reaches 94.3%. In addition, more than 63% of the Andalucía vehicle fleet are more than 10 years old.”

Over Budget

The General State Intervention Department, part of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office of the Spanish Ministry of Finance, claims to have detected changes and cost overruns close to 20% in several public contracts from ‘Adif’, the Spanish rail entity. The construction of the ‘AVE’ (High speed train) between Murcia and Almeria, specifically the 26km section between Pulpí and Vera, is one of the ones that has been investigated. According to the report, once the contract was awarded to ‘Ferrovial Agroman’ they requested several modifications to the contract price that they considered necessary due to “unforeseeable circumstances”. The modification of the contract was approved on July 31st, 2022 and involved an increase in expenditure of 24 million euros that represented an increase of 19.93% compared to the initial monetary award of the contract that was 121 million euros. This percentage is extremely close to the 20% limit allowed for modifications of public contracts. The analysis considers that it is difficult to justify that the need to modify the contract was due to “unforeseeable circumstances” that arose so soon after the tender was accepted. The report is part of documentation sent to a judge at the Spanish National Court who is investigating alleged irregularities in public contracts linked to former heads of infrastructure-related bodies.

Nuclear Power in Spain

Spain currently has five nuclear power plants with seven reactors and they all date back to the 1980s. The current plan is that they will all close between 2027 and 2035. They produce about 20% of the energy requirements in Spain but are more expensive than renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydroelectric dams, but cheaper than gas powered combined-cycle power stations that burn gas and use the steam generated. In the present energy crisis, the power companies Iberdrola, Naturgy, and Endesa are suggesting that the life of them must be extended. There is a study

in place by the Spanish Energy Regulator regarding the extension of the useful life of the plant at Almaraz, with two reactors, until 2030. The closure plan agreed between Enresa, the national radioactive waste company, and the owners of the plant (Iberdrola, Endesa and Naturgy) is that the closure is effective in 2027. Endesa states, “The deployment of wind and solar is behind the targets set for 2030. And we have already experienced what it means to depend excessively on volatile technologies. In 2022, the price of gas skyrocketed the electricity bill throughout Europe.” The chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Sánchez Galán, has also expressed his determination that nuclear power plants can be active for much longer. He claims an extension of their life would reduce the price of electricity by 15 euros per MWh compared to the closure scenario and would save 14 million tonnes of CO2per year. (One MWh is a 1,000-watt electrical appliance on for one hour). The attitude of the government is that if there were any extensions, costly modifications would have to be paid for by the owners, not consumers. In mid-March, Ursula von der Leyden, President of the EU, called on countries where there was a planned closure of nuclear power station to “think it through” and mentioned Spain specifically.

‘Mercadona’ and ‘Inditex’ Forging Ahead

At his annual press appearance, Juan Roig ,the CEO of the private Mercadona company, announced a rise in profit of 25% in 2025, with nearly 42 billion euros in sales. Of this total, 39.8 million corresponds to the business in Spain and the remaining 2.2 billion from Portugal, where Mercadona has 69 stores out of the total of 1,672. The company, based in Valencia, raised its market share by 0.6%, to stand at 28.5% of total supermarket sales nationally. Regarding employment, the company employed 5,000 new workers in 2025, reaching a combined workforce of 115,000 people between Spain and Portugal. The company is a pioneer in the adoption of initiatives for the workforce with stable and quality employment. An example of this is the improvement of the working day, with an extra week of vacation, with wage increases equivalent to the Consumer Price Index. Last month, they paid out 780 million euros in bonuses, specifically two monthly payments to

workers with less than 4 years employment and a three-monthly-payment to those who exceed this, which is 71% of the workforce. Juan Roig is of the opinion that if supermarket prices are affected by the Iran war, the IVA (VAT) on all products should be reduced to zero, as long as is necessary. The textile giant ‘Inditex’ is owned by Amancio Ortega who is in the “Top Ten” of the wealthiest people in the world and the company brands include Zara, Massimo Dutti, Pull& Bear, Bershka, Stradivarious, Oysho and Lefties. The Spanish group reported a profit of 6.22 billion euros from the 2025 financial year, which marked a 6% rise on the 5.9 billion euros in 2024, which was also a record. Sales increased in 2025 by 3.2% totalling 39.9 billion euros. The company is improving its logistics to deliver online orders faster than their rivals and investing in larger, more modern stores, whilst it is shutting smaller ones. Altogether they have 160,000 employees worldwide.

New Asprodalba Home

For more than 40 years, the Asprodalba foundation in Vera has continued to work to improve the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities and their families, defending their rights and accompanying them at every stage of their lives. In early March, the “Pilar Lerma” Adult Residence building opened its doors in the heart of the city so that eleven of these people can make it their home and develop their life project with support and security. The construction began in 2020, conceived from the beginning as personalised housing, moving away from the traditional residence model, giving the opportunity for people to live in a close, accessible and fully integrated environment. During the presentation of the new homes, an emotional tribute was paid to Pilar Lerma, whose name gives the residence its title. The co-founder of Asprodalba with Ignacio Martín Cuadrado in 1979, Pilar Lerma has dedicated her entire professional life to working for people with intellectual disabilities. For decades, she has been closely linked to the development of Asprodalba’s residential resources, accompanying users in their daily lives and improving their quality of life. Tributes were paid to Miguel Hernández from the Smurfit Westrock Foundation, who provided decisive substantial financial support that allowed the first

steps to be taken. Another of the institutions that have contributed significantly to the project has been the Unicaja Bank Foundation, with one of its trustees Pedro Fernández Céspedes involved.

Bank Saving Accounts

The Bank of Spain state that in bank accounts in our province there is a total of 14.9 billion euros. This is the volume of deposits accumulated by families, companies and administrations. The current level of deposits is far higher than before the 2008 financial crisis, and in 2007, at the height of the real estate boom, the money kept in banks in our province was only around 10.8 billion euros. A very important part of the savings remains in current accounts totalling 13.3. billion euros, so people want the money to be available for immediate use. In deposit accounts with a time period for the money to be released, this only comes to 1.6 billion euros. One explanation for the record amounts is that people have been wary of experiencing economic problems and they prefer to have savings to mitigate this.

A 1,000 Euros Baby Grant

A baby grant announced by the Almería ‘Diputación’ (County Council) is available for babies born between January 1st (backdated) and December 31st. There are two conditions and the first one is that one of the parents has been registered on the ‘padrón’ (the official list of residents in a municipality) for at least 12 months before the birth. The second condition is that it only applies to municipalities with less than 1,000 inhabitants. This will mean that parents in 48 municipalities in our province, out of the total of 103, can claim the grants. The baby cheque will be paid directly to the parents into a bank account and multiplied in the event of multiple births and also for adoptions. The Diputación states that this is to combat depopulation and push for the growth and development of small municipalities. The money paid out does not have a ceiling, it is not a “first come first served” system, and the estimated amount of the grants is put at 17 million euros.

New Garrucha Roundabout

Finally, after being planned for several years, there will be a roundabout on the A-370 bypass from Los

Gallardos to Garrucha where the ‘T’ junction gives access to Garrucha, joining the road to Mojácar from Garrucha and the road from Garrucha to Vera. The Andalucía Minister of Development has announced that tenders are being invited for a roundabout with an outer diameter of 30.5m and an inner ring of 20.5m, dimensions calculated to optimise the fluidity of movements in and out of the town with two lanes. The tender price is just over 1 million euros and it is intended that work starts this year and will take 12 months. The existing ‘T’ junction is dangerous because an average of 14,600 vehicles use it every weekday and 10% are heavy lorries. In a recent report about accidents by the Ministry of Transport, out of the 17 places in Andalucía that were considered to be “black spots”, this junction was one of three in Almería province. Financing is 85% from European funds through the Andalusian ERDF Program.

Employment and Exports

The booming economy in Spain is far better than other EU states according to the latest ‘GDP’ Gross Domestic Product figures. They take into account a nation’s level of consumption, investment, government spending on goods and services, and the difference between exports and imports. It is calculated annually and in Spain in 2025 it was 2.8% compared to 1.4% in the EU, which was the same in the UK. One benchmark is the number of employees and self-employed people who pay into the Spanish Social Security system, so they are all legal. The numbers have been steadily increasing and at the end of 2025, in all of Spain, they were just under 22.5 million people an increase of 650,500. (The total population in Spain at the end of 2025 was 49.4 million and predictions are that it will probably reach 50 million this year). In Andalucía there were 3.6 million people paying in and this was an increase of 138,000 (+3.96%) with 14,600 more in the last quarter of 2025 and these figures always go up when the tourist season kicks in. Unemployment in Spain has been quite high for a number of years but in 2025, it went down by 5% in Andalucía to 622,800 registered unemployed. Out of the three autonomous communities with the most exports, Andalucía stands out as there was a positive trade

balance with more exports than imports. The other two largest communities of Catalonia and Madrid had a trade deficit. Exports from Andalucía from January euros with a positive trade balance of 1.68 billion euros compared to imports, mostly due to very good agriculture figures for fruit and vegetables and stone, marble and synthetic products.

The Vera ‘AVE’ Railway Sation

The ‘Saitec’ company that has designed and will oversee the construction of the Vera-Almanzora station for the ‘AVE’ (High speed train), have announced that the construction will start before the end of the year. The aim is that it keeps pace with the finishing of the line with all the infrastructure in place, as they do not want the station to be inoperative for an extended period of time. The estimated value of the project is 789,524 euros over a 1,000m2 area that will include a passenger building with at least one main lobby, a high-speed train departure lounge, information and ticket sales points, toilets, luggage storage and commercial premises. It will have a car park with at least 100 spaces and vehicle rental facilities. The station is in the Media Legua, next to the Garciden industrial warehouse on the Garrucha-Vera road, and the underpass has already been completed. Saitec is a multinational company in sectors such as railways, roads and energy and they obtained the highest score of the nine offers submitted in 2023. After the station in Murcia city, there are only stations at Lorca and this one, before the station in Almería city. Spain is being given grants from the EU in stage payments and the last one technically finishes in 2026, but it should still be available as all the work from Murcia to Almeria is in an advanced state of construction. March it was announced by ‘Adif’ (The Spanish rail authority) that the laying of the track from Lorca to Almería had started and a substation near Lorca was in an advanced state of construction that will provide electricity for the trains. It was always intended that the last payment would cover the cost of the AVE from Murcia to Almería.

The US Bases at Rota and Morón

The row between Trump and Pedro Sánchez came about because the US was told that attacks on Iran could not take place from either of their two US bases. Pedro Sánchez stated that in his opinion the war was illegal and he compared it to the 2003 invasion of Iraq that he considers was a disaster. There was a lot of opposition in Spain and demonstrators used the slogan “No a la Guerra” (“No to War”) that he has used again relating to Iran. The NAVSTA naval base at Rota established in 1953 near Cádiz is a joint Spanish and US one. It is the largest US base in the Mediterranean which operates as part of NATO with warships and fleets of helicopters. It is the largest supply facility in Europe for cargo, fuel and ammunition. The base can respond to threats from North Korea and Iran and patrol the Black Sea for any aggression by Russia (particularly during the “cold war”) and Syria. In 2020 the US asked Spain to allow the modernisation of the ballistic missile ships for new ones and there are now five, with a 2023 agreement that this can be increased to six. An additional fleet of helicopters was agreed with 600 more marines. The present total of marines and families is about 4,000. The location is very useful and strategic as it is close to the Straits of Gibraltar and at the same time it is midway between Southwest Asia and the US, also a stepping stone to North Africa. There was a slight row in 2017 when the USS Ross and the USS Porter destroyers set sail and fired 59 Tomahawk missiles into Syria after the alleged use of chemical weapons by president Bashar al-Assad. The Spanish government made a statement that this was a “proportionate and measured response” but considered that they should have been consulted, before it took place! There was another row in 2019 when Trump put 25% import taxes on Spanish goods as he considered that Airbus was being given

unfair subsidies that affected Boeing. Spain pointed out that the permission for more destroyers was being overshadowed by these tariffs and eventually when Joe Biden was President they were scrapped. The Morón US airbase is near Seville with about 3,000 personnel and up to 40 aircraft. It is a very important base for providing tanker refuelling in the Middle East but there was a hiccup in 1966 as the tanker plane that collided with the bomber plane over Palomares had come from Morón. The tanker aircraft were withdrawn until 1983 when they went back there, and in 2021 it was the most active base for the war against Afghanistan. When Pedro Sánchez stated that the Rota and Morón bases could not be used to attack Iran, Trump told him that they could do whatever they wanted to, as Spain could not stop them, but he transferred 15 tanker aircraft to bases in Germany and France. Low Emission Zones in Almería City

Because Almería city has more than 50,000 inhabitants they were obliged to put in place the ‘ZBE’ Low Emission Zones by January 1st last year. Cameras identify vehicles that do not have low emission stickers from the DGT (Spanish Traffic Department), so access is banned in these zones and they will be sent a fine. At the beginning of February, the Councillor for Traffic, María del Mar, told a council meeting that when the zones were introduced (which only cover 0.54 km²), the local police supervised it. This is still active with no cameras or fines. She stated, “It has not been a major problem because there are only a few vehicle owners who don’t comply. If banned vehicles do enter a restricted area, they are told by the local police that they shouldn’t be there. There was never any desire to totally prohibit vehicles because the city does not have pollution problems.” The ‘paseo’ (promenade) will become a new zone as it is being partly pedestrianised. She also stated that the regulations were being studied and they might have cameras at unloading and loading bays with a time limit. Figures as of January 1st this year revealed that 109 municipalities with over 50,000 inhabitants had not introduced the restrictions. Of this group, some 89 are in the intermediate “in process” phase, so they

should comply eventually. On the other hand, there are 20 urban centres that have not even started the procedure and large municipalities such as Valencia, Murcia and Las Palmas are on the list of places where all vehicles still circulate without prohibitions.

Easy Money

Almería City Council are compiling a list of money deposited by individuals or companies that has been dormant for more than 20 years. The money has mostly come from guarantees and bonds for building work that can be reclaimed if the conditions have been met. The present estimate is that the total is about 634,000 euros. This type of process is regulated by the Assets of Public Administrations and the Regulation of Assets of Local Entities. They allow the monetary balances where abandonment has taken place for more than 20 years, to become part of the municipal funds.

Green Hydrogen

On March 11th, Juanma Moreno, the President of the Junta de Andalucía Government, inaugurated the ‘European Hydrogen Energy Conference’ held in Seville organised by the Spanish Hydrogen Association. He announced that Andalucía is making progress in its positioning as one of the main European green hydrogen hubs with 14 projects linked to this energy vector integrated into the ‘Project Accelerator Unit’ of the Junta de Andalucía, which together exceeds 6.2 billion euros of investment, expected to generate some 10,000 jobs. The Secretary of State for Industry, Jordi García, stressed that the promotion of green hydrogen responds to a shared strategy between central government and Andalucía to move towards greater energy independence. In this regard, he pointed out that the current international context, marked by conflicts such as the war in the Middle East, shows the need to strengthen strategic energy autonomy. He also stated that the transition to renewable energies will not only reduce emissions, but also generate new industries, transform existing ones and improve competitiveness, with hydrogen as one of the key vectors. Renewable energy from solar and wind farm is used to power electrolysis which is a chemical reaction that uses

electricity to separate the elements of a substance, such as water (H20), divided into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) to produce hydrogen as a clean fuel.

Ronaldo and Almería UD

The Almería UD football club is majority owned by the Saudi Arabia’s SMC Group, led by Mohamed Al Khereiji who bought it from the previous majority shareholder Turki Al-Sheikh in 2025. Cristiano Ronaldo is very friendly with the new owner and announced on February 26th that he had bought a 25% stake in the Almería club through his company CR7 Sports Investments. Ronaldo stated that his involvement is part of a “broader strategy to contribute to football beyond his playing career.” He intends to support the club’s growth, particularly in the first team and the youth academy. Almeria UD is hoping that they can return to the first division of La Liga and Ronaldo intends to increase their global brand recognition. Because he is now a shareholder, Almería UD fans will not be able to see him on the pitch, as La Liga rules prevent a shareholder from playing for a team when they are involved financially. Since February 26th, 672 million people are now looking at his profile on Instagram and 400,000 people are looking at the football club pages that has pushed the total up to 3.2 million. This has made the club rise to the fifth position in the league tables of the followers of the 10 most popular clubs.

Income Tax In Spain

April 8th is the start date for making an income tax return, known as “La Renta”, for the 2025 calender tax year that continous until June 30th, the last

date for submitting it. The returns can be filed in different ways, so the dates vary if you want to file by phone, online or in person. To prepare it online, the period will begin on April 8th and will last until June 30th. To do it by phone, the deadline begins on May 6th and ends on June 30th. To make the declaration in person at their local tax office (in our case in Huércal-Overa), you will have to wait until June. It will be from June 1st to 30th when you can go there by appointment that can be requested from May 29th to June 29th. For a phone or in person visit you must make an appointment online during the relevant dates by calling 91 535 73 26 or 901 12 12 24 or 91 553 00 71 or 901 22 33 44. Many people rely on a ‘gestor’ who provides assistance in dealing with legal matters in general, or an ‘asesoria’, an accountancy company. (We list various ones in both categories in our Directory Section). The fee they charge will often be less than the tax that can be saved. There are some peculiarities and there are two boxes that can be

selected on the form. Box 105 gives 0.7% of the tax due to the Catholic Church and box 106 gives the same amount to Social Enterprises. A person can ignore these, select one, or both. The 0.7% is paid by the ‘Hacienda’ (Spanish Tax Department) not by the individual. On the annual tax return made last year 114,900 people in Almería province asked for the 0.7% to go to the church, which was 428,000 euros, a big increase over 2024 that was only 385,000 euros. 82% is used for diocese finance, upkeep and for social or economic hardship. Normally, about three times the amount of people ask for the 0.7% to go to Social Enterprises. This is allocated with 77% for the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda, 19% for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation and 3% for the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. The Liver Regenerates

The liver is one of the few organs in the human body capable of repairing and regrowing damaged tissue. Its remarkable regenerative ability allows it to recover from mild injuries, infections, damage caused by diet, lifestyle, surgery and some diseases. Studies have shown that after surgical removal of up to 70% of the liver (a partial hepatectomy), healthy liver tissue can regrow to near its original size within 6–8 weeks in healthy adults. However, repeated damage from alcohol, fatty liver, or viral infections can overwhelm this capacity. Regular exercise reduces liver fat and enhances metabolic health.

The Horsefly, the Fastest Flying Insect

Horseflies are recorded as reaching speeds of up to 90mph (145 km/h) in short bursts, making them the fastest insects ever observed in flight. This incredible speed allows them to pursue large mammals effectively. They prefer wetlands, woodlands, grasslands, and areas near water, and are often found around livestock, horses, and humans in rural regions. Females feed on the blood of mammals to aid reproduction whilst males survive on nectar and plant juices. Their fast flight, painful bites, and potential to spread diseases make them both fascinating and problematic in human and animal environments.

The Mona Lisa Post Box

If you have ever visited Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa at the Louvre in Paris, you may have noticed a little mailbox in the room adjacent to the one that houses the famous painting from about the 19th century. This box isn’t used to collect feedback from visitors about their experience at the museum, it is used to deposit fan mail. The letters, which the museum stores inside its labyrinthine archive, come in many different shapes and sizes. Some leave unanswerable questions about Leonardo’s work, and others ask for life advice. Some letters are declaring their love and others have poems, sometimes accompanied by small mementos.

Lightning Hotter Than Surface of the Sun

Lightning is one of the most spectacular displays of nature. Inside a thunderstorm (cumulonimbus) cloud, ice crystals and hail bounce around and collide with each other. This leads to a negative charge below a cloud, but a positive charge above the cloud and the ground. Eventually, the negative and positive charges build up so much that a huge spark of electricity, lightning, is released and hits either other clouds or something on the ground. The charge is so intense that it has a temperature of 30,000°C (54,000°F), five times hotter than the surface of the Sun. If you are struck by lightning, you will be electrocuted and badly burnt.

Music For Pain

Chronic pain affects a high percentage of the general population and is one of the leading causes of disability. For years, opioid-based medications have been the primary treatment choice for chronic pain but with poor long-term outcomes and the potential for dependence. Music provides calmness and relaxation and listening to music is strongly associated with stress reduction by the decrease of cortisol levels and lowering the heart rate. Relaxing songs can help reduce heart rate, blood pressure and distract from worries. This explains why a mother’s lullabies are soothing to an infant. They decrease heart rate with slower breathing.

The 4am Alarm Clock

In 1787, clockmaker Levi Hutchins of Concord, New Hampshire, invented what may have been the world’s first working mechanical alarm clock, certainly the first in the United States. But despite his long career building and selling timepieces, this alarm clock wasn’t something he actually patented or sold. He just wanted to wake up at 4am and felt out of sorts if he slept any later. He took the assembly from one of his clocks and added a small gear that would trigger a bell at that precise time. It wasn’t adjustable or for snoozing and was only useful for someone who wanted to wake at the exact time of the morning every day.

Spain and the Energy Crisis

WhenTrump and Israel started the war with Iran, Trump must have been told by his advisors that this would lead to a major energy crisis. Apparently, he chose to ignore this or did not believe that it would happen.

Fortunately, Spain is in a position to weather the storm far better than many other countries. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow, strategically vital waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman through which 20% to 25% of the world’s seaborn oil and liquified (LPG) passes through daily. At its narrowest section it is only 34kms wide but the central channel that ships use is only about 4kms wide. Luckily, Spain only relies on the Strait for 5% of petroleum products and oil and 2% of LPG. Pedro Suárez, the Spanish Prime Minister, is releasing 11.5 million barrels of petroleum products from Spain’s reserve.

The rising prices of petrol and diesel fuel, oil and gas has affected Spain, and apart from prices at the pumps, the impact will be felt in the short term and more directly, for the 8 million Spanish households that have the regulated (PVPC) electricity contracts and the 3 million customers on the Last Resort Tariff (TUR) gas tariffs. They are the most affected by the price of hydrocarbons in the wholesale markets. The problem is different for users who have electricity and gas contracts on the free market, which usually have an annual price review and are more stable. However, this usually implies that they are also more expensive, precisely because of the guarantee of being covered against market volatility.

The Spanish Minister of Economy, Carlos Cuerpo, along with the Prime Minister have indicated that they expect the crisis in the Middle East to be a long one and are willing to take measures to protect consumers and prevent speculative movements that harm users. Among the measures they are considering are tax aid and subsidies for the transport, agriculture and fishing industries and vulnerable users. In 2024, to keep the cost

down, they reduced taxes on electricity and gas bills, partly by dropping IVA (VAT) from 21% to 10% and subsidising the TUR tariff. The problem with the inevitable increase in energy prices due to foreign dependence is that, as happened in 2022, it ends up having an impact on other products and increasing inflation. This has to be avoided at all costs so as not to further reduce the purchasing power of families.

The other reason why Spain is in a better situation than the rest of the EU is because of renewable energy. On average, last year, renewables contributed 57 % of the electricity required but currently reservoirs in Spain are 83% full on average, the highest amount for 12 years, so they can produce substantial hydro-electric power. On one day in the third week of March, solar energy provided 60% of the electricity demand, total renewable energy was 70% and nuclear power provided 20%, cutting down drastically on the need for electricity from gas-fired power stations. Red España, the Spanish National grid entity, are acutely aware that they have to monitor the situation far better than they did in April last year, when bad management caused the national blackout.

The Ministry for Ecological Transition has banned companies from making energy offers by telephone. In the last crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there were many calls from salespeople to attract customers and take them out of the regulated market into the free market, that ultimately was more expensive.

Excess Weight - A Modern Problem

The body mass index (BMI) is a value derived from the mass (weight) in kilogrammes and the height in metres. The weight divided by the square of the height is expressed in units of kg/m², that estimates the amount of body fat. Underweight is less than 18.5, the optimum range is 18.5 to 24.9, overweight is 25 to 29.9, Class I obesity is 30 to 34.9, Class II obesity is 35 to 39.9 and Class III is more than 40.

In general, a higher BMI number can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, osteoarthritis, sleep apnoea, some cancers, and depression. It is important to remember however, that a person could have any of the above health conditions without a high BMI. Similarly, you could have a high BMI without having any of them! Genetics and other factors, such as smoking, play a large role in overweight problems. Excess weight is not now an anomaly or a one-off phenomenon, it is a dominant pattern.

Córdoba, Jaén and Almería provinces have the highest levels of excess weight and obesity. Only 34% of the adult population in Almería province has a weight considered “normal” and only 29% of men maintain normal weight compared to 39.1% of women, one of the widest gender gaps in Andalucía. 34% is one of the lowest proportions but means that 66% of adults are outside the health guideline range. In our province, overweight affects 44% of adults, obesity reaches 19.9%, with 6% having severe obesity. This is an average BMI of 26.8 kg/m², clearly above the overweight threshold. In Córdoba province, 63.4% of adults are overweight and in men, the figure climbs to 72.7%, one of the highest in the entire community. In Jaén, 61% of the inhabitants have excess weight, with 22% that suffer from obesity and the average BMI is 26.9 kg/m², very slightly over the average BMI in our province, but well over the threshold. As regards major cities, in Seville 58.5% of inhabitants have excess weight, 57.8% in Granada and 58% in

Málaga. These are lower than in our province but are still above the healthy threshold.

Andalucía is the cradle of the ideal Mediterranean Diet of olive oil, fruits, vegetables, nuts, white meat and oily fish, but the problem is that they are no longer part of the day-to-day life of a growing part of the population. Cooking takes time, planning and energy that is missing in many homes. The increase in overweight coincides with a greater consumption of ultra-processed products, fast foods and ready meals, which are high in calories, poor in nutrients and only 50% of people eat according to the Mediterranean Diet. Long working hours, commuting, chronic stress, and a lack of rest promote quick food choices and reduce daily physical activity.

The dietitian-nutritionist Pablo Ojeda is a leading member of the Spanish Obesity Society and sums it up by stating, “It is not only a problem of food, it is a problem of rhythm of life. We eat badly because we live with less time and more stress. Adding to these problems is an insufficient level of physical activity. Walking less, spending more hours sitting, and only light exercise at specific times is a measure of daily inactivity.” Pablo Ojeda concludes that dedicating time to cooking healthy food is as important as dedicating time to work or exercise. He has a chilling prediction that is far from being reassuring. “By 2030, it is estimated that 80% of the population will be overweight or obese.”

Trump’s Knee Jerk Reaction

WhenSpain told the US that they could not attack Iran from the Spanish / US naval base in Rota near Cádiz, nor the US airbase at Morón near Seville, Trump was furious. He immediately announced that this was “terrible” and he would cut off all trade with Spain. “In fact, I told Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary, to cut all relations with Spain. First of all, it all started when all European countries, at my request, did what they had to do, which was to raise to 5% of GDP their contribution to NATO. Everyone was enthusiastic about it, Germany, everyone, and Spain didn’t.” In June 2025, under US pressure, NATO adopted a new goal of spending 5% of GDP on defence by 2035 but Spain secured an exemption to cap its military budget at approximately 2.1% and they intend to bring it up to 3.5% by 2035. In the US they were only spending 2.9% in 2025.

The Spanish government insists that it will not collaborate with the US army in operations in Iran and hopes that the threats coming from the other side of the Atlantic will be forgotten or found to be impossible. The reality is that it is not easy for Washington to take unilateral measures against Spain without an agreement with the EU. In addition, both the EU and the US are traditional members and allies in NATO.

Brussels made it clear that it will defend Spain in the event of retaliation by the US stating, “The Commission will guarantee the full protection of the interests of the 27 member European Union bloc. We stand in full solidarity with all member states and all their citizens and through our common commercial policy, we are ready to act if necessary to safeguard the interests of the EU.” French President, Emmanuel Macron, also expressed his support for Pedro Sánchez.

Trump would have to declare that Spain poses an “unusual and extraordinary” threat that would cause a “national emergency in the US”, that is not happening with the deep

commercial, cultural and political relationships. To understand how extraordinary and remote this possibility is, the ‘IEEPA’ is the standard used by Washington to sanction its declared rivals such as Iran, North Korea, Russia, Venezuela, Cuba, Syria, Myanmar and Afghanistan. There is no way that this could be applied to Spain.

Section 301 allows tariffs as a retaliatory measure if it could be shown that Spain applies trade measures that are “unjustifiable, irrational” or “discriminatory” to US companies, and harm their trade. To go down this legal route, the White House would have to order an investigation by the Department of Commerce. In this case, the habitual practice consists of a dialogue with the affected country before approving any measure, so that it can present allegations, which means that the procedure is very long winded.

Finally, trade relations between Spain and the US are very fluid. We have commented before that Spain exports no cars to the US and only 4.3% of sales abroad are to the US market. Spain exported 17 billion euros worth of goods in 2025, 8% less than in 2024, but Spain imported 30 billion euros of goods from the US in 2025, 7% more, which led to a widening of the trade deficit to 13 billion euros. The main exports, in order of importance, are machinery, nuclear reactor components, electronic equipment, olive oil, animal and vegetable fats, pharmaceutical products, essential oils for perfumes and cosmetics, mineral fuels, chemical products and some steel and iron.

A Huge ‘Thank You’ from the Indalo Players

At their annual AGM, profits raised from productions during 2025 allowed them to allocate 1000 euros to both the Turre and Vera Food Banks and 500 euros to Stepping Stones. The Indalo Players could make these donations because of the amazing audiences who came to see Agatha Crusty And The Village Hall Murders plus The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, .

The Turre Food Bank currently has 130 families registered with them. The Vera branch 385. Thankfully local supermarkets supply perishable items with an expiry date. However, money is required to provide products like milk, rice, flour, eggs, pasta, oil, beans and tins of tuna. Donations also allow the charities to supply baby milk and food, nappies and personal things like toothbrushes and soap. The Turre Food Bank would especially like to thank the Sewing Circle who for many years have knitted jumpers and blankets, etc plus lovingly crafted Christmas Gifts for the children. Stepping Stones supports families who are dealing with Alzheimer’s. Their donation will subsidise excursions, weekly meals and help when sudden care is required.

PAWS-PATAS Monthly “Pup-date”

What a great way to start March, having found loving homes for 11 dogs & 3 cats during February. It’s why we do what we do. Our Valentine bingo lunch club raised a whopping 688 euros with everyone having an incredibly fun day and one lucky lady being the recipient of a 200 euros furniture voucher, kindly donated by Indalo Muebles, the new furniture store at Las Alparatas. Our book sale raised 211 euros & 120 euros was received from our PAWS-SOME Club members

Thank you to businesses who allow us to have donation tins in their premises and all of you who support us in some way, volunteering, donating goods to our shops or by attending an event.

Strong Start to 2026 for Los Bandidos

On Saturday 21 March, Los Bandidos kicked off the race series in style at Enix for the opening event of the Circuito de Carreras Populares Diputación de Almería 2026.

A dozen Bandidos took to the start line. Eight runners tackled the 8km race, while junior Bandido Guillermo competed in the 1.6km event. Despite the chilly evening conditions, the Bandidos delivered an impressive set of performances across the board.

The Almería City Orchestra have a concert at the Maestro Padilla auditorium in Almería city on Sunday, April 26th at 12.30pm. They perform the piano concerto by Michael Thomas who has been the director of two orchestras and two choirs in Almería for a very long time, and the Brahms 2nd Symphony in D major, Opus 73. The conductor is Michael Thomas and the piano soloist is Susana Gómez Vázquez. Tickets are 10 & 12 euros

‘Gillman the Documentary’ is a film about the engineer Gustavo Gillman (1889-1922) who built the railway between Lorca and Baza and the rail link to Águilas. It is shown at the auditorium on Saturday, May 16th at 8.30pm. Admission is free.

Mojácar

Skating and Yoga. On Sundays, at the parking area opposite the Descargador beach there is roller skating that starts at 11am. Children must have normal safety protection and helmets. Also, there is yoga on the beach from 10am-11.30am of low-medium difficulty level. Participants must bring their own mats.

The Mojácar guided walks feature a 9km walk on Saturday, April 11th from Marina de la Torre. The difficulty is moderate and the walk takes 3hrs 30min. While suffering the agonies of impending death, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favourite biscuits from downstairs. He gathered his remaining strength, and lifted himself from the bed. His aged and withered hand trembled towards a biscuit at the edge of the table, when it was suddenly smacked by his wife, with a spatula............. “Hands off!” she said, “They’re for the funeral.”

The Blonde

A blonde and a redhead have a ranch. They have just lost their bull. The women need to buy another, but only have $500. The redhead tells the blonde, “I will go to the market and see if I can find one for under that amount. If I can, I will send you a telegram.” She goes to the market and finds one for $499. Having only one dollar left, she goes to the telegraph office and finds out that it costs one dollar per word. She is stumped on how to tell the blonde to bring the truck and trailer. How to Get Sick Leave

I urgently needed a few days off work, but I knew the Boss would not allow me to take leave. I thought that maybe if I acted crazy then he would tell me to take a few days off. So, I hung upside-down from the ceiling and made funny noises. My co-worker asked me what I was doing. I told her that I was pretending to be a light bulb so that the Boss might think I was crazy and give me a few days off.

A few minutes later the Boss came into the office and asked, “What on earth do you think you are you doing?” I told him I was a light bulb. He said, “You are clearly stressed out. Go home and recuperate for a couple of days.” I jumped down and walked out of the office...

When my co-worker followed me, the Boss asked her, “And where do you think you’re going?!” She said, “I’m going home, too. I can’t work in the dark!”

Thoughtful Brother

A man goes on a 2-month business trip to Europe and leaves his cat with his brother. Three days before his return he calls his brother.

Brother 1: How are things? How’s my cat doing?

Brother 2: He’s dead

Brother 1: He’s dead! What do you mean he’s dead! I loved that cat. Couldn’t you have thought of a nicer way to tell me! I’m leaving in 3 days. You could have broken the news to me a bit easier. You could have told me today that she got out of the house or something. Then when I called you before I left you could have told me, that you’d found her but she is up on the roof and you’re having trouble getting her down. Then when I called you from the airport you could have told me, the Fire Department was there and scared her off the roof and the cat died when it hit the ground.

Brother 2: I’m sorry...you’re right...that was insensitive of me, I won’t let it happen again.

Brother 1: Alright, alright, forget about it. Anyway, how is Mum doing?

Brother 2: Well she’s up on the roof and we’re having trouble getting her down.

The Races

Did you hear about the guy who went to the races and while there he observed a Roman Catholic priest who went over to a horse and sprinkled it with holy water. The horse went on to win the race, streaking ahead of the opposition. Before the next race he saw the priest go over to another horse and sprinkle it with holy water. Like the first horse, it went on to win the race.

The guy said to himself that if the priest sprinkles another horse with holy water I am going to bet every penny I have on it. Sure enough, the priest went over to another horse and sprinkled it with holy water. So the guy went to a bookie and bet every penny he had on the horse.

Then the race started and the horse that the priest sprinkled with holy water dropped dead about 100 yards after the start of the race. The guy was devastated. So he went over to the priest and said, “What’s going on here?

The last two horses you sprinkled with holy water went on to win their races, and this last one dropped dead after only 100 yards. I had put every penny I had on its nose!”

The priest replied, “You’re not Roman Catholic, are you?” The guy admitted that he was not and asked, “But, how do you know that?”

The priest said, “Because you don’t know the difference between giving a blessing and administering the last rights.”

What Gender is a Computer?

A Spanish Evening Class Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.

“House” for instance, is feminine: “la casa.” “Pencil,” however, is masculine: “el lapiz.”

A student asked, “What gender is ‘computer’?”

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether “computer” should be a masculine or a feminine noun.

Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

The men’s group decided that “computer” should definitely be of the feminine gender, perhaps because:

1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic.

2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers are incomprehensible to everyone else.

3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and,

4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your pay cheque on accessories for it.

The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine, perhaps because:

1.In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on.

2.They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves.

3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and,

4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have got a better model.
