because of the heatwave, there have been a very high number of serious fires throughout Spain in August, with over 30,000 people evacuated and 350,000 hectares (1,350 sq. miles) affected. Various EU countries sent aircraft to try to contain them. In Andalucía there was a serious fire at the coastal resort of Tarifa in Cádiz and 2,000 people from two hotels, urbanizations and private houses were evacuated for over 24hrs. Relatively minor fires in our area so far occurred in Sorbas, Gérgal and Cantoria that were quickly extinguished.
Two large fires were started because of a lightning strike but disgracefully, many of them were arson. One arsonist was a man who was a temporary firefighter, and the alleged arsonist in Tarifa was a young man admitted to hospital with bad burns on both hands. The Guardia Civil police stated towards the end of August that 27 people had been arrested since June 1st.
The ‘Dreambeach’ Electronic Musical Festival just outside Almería city only attracted just over 90,000 people this year compared to 120,000 last year. Numbers were 160,000 in 2016 and 135,000 in 2023. Both of these were at the Villaricos site.
The much-trumpeted Mojácar new bypass to take long queues of traffic off the Parque Commercial roundabout and the beach road is still not open as there has been a dispute with a property owner. Mojácar town hall point out that the road belongs to the Junta de Andalucía, and whilst it is anticipated that more work will start soon, it will not be open this year.
A reader contacted us to ask if we had any advice as he is repeatedly unable to get an appointment at the ‘foreigners office’ in Almeria city to renew his expired ‘TIE’ resident’s card. This is a problem for various nationalities but it is stated that the right to stay in Spain (as regards UK nationals) comes from the UK / Spanish withdrawal agreement, so these people are still legal residents.
The director of the Maxillofacial department at the Torrecárdenas hospital, Fernando Gálvez, is pleading
with e-scooter users that they must wear a helmet. He states that there are frequent accidents that can be very serious and we expand on this in our ‘In The News’ section.
In Mojácar, Níjar, Pulpí and Zurgena there has been an increase in the ‘Culex pipiens’ mosquitoes that can carry the West Nile virus. The Junta de Andalucía Health Department is working with these town halls to reinforce disinfestation treatments. If one of these mosquitos bites you, in 80% of cases there is no reaction, in 19% there can be short flulike or movement problems for two to five days, but less than 1% of people are in danger of contracting neurological diseases such as encephalitis or meningitis. We explain their advice to try and stop bites happening in our ‘In The News’ section.
We have another item regarding the 15% EU / US tariffs that will affect Spain, but not as badly as some other EU states. The ‘Ibex 35’ Spanish stock exchange has climbed to over 15,000 points, the highest since January 2008. Excellent results for the main banks have helped to achieve this milestone. Analysts in the US are already reported increased costs for consumers for many goods, including food, because of the world-wide tariffs and as predicted, inflation is creeping up.
There are no major national fiesta dates during September and October when official offices, banks and other businesses close. There are local fiestas in Alfaix, Cantoria, Pulpí and Vera during September and Mojácar, Turre, Albox and HuércalOvera have fiestas in October.
On July 16th, between midnight and 4am, there was another major problem with the electricity supply in Spain. REE, the Spanish equivalent of the National Grid, reported an over-voltage event that forced them to take emergency measures. They stated that problems were in south-eastern Spain where there is a large number of photovoltaic solar farms and in the north-west region where there is a large number of wind farms. Increasing the supply from other sources such as gas and nuclear brought this under control. A spokesperson from ‘Aelec’, which include big names such as Iberdrola and Endesa, claims that this type of incident highlights the fragility of the Spanish electricity system, which has been criticised for its inability to manage emergency situations. The Spanish Government has taken drastic measures to address the problems including an investment of 750 million euros to improve the infrastructure. This investment will be used to modernise control systems and increase the capacity to respond to critical situations. One measure that is highly recommended is that solar farms should instal batteries. The cost of these is coming down substantially and they mean that the output is less liable to fluctuate. Also, the owners of the solar farms can release surplus stored energy overnight, when there would normally be no output and no income. Recent reliance on more stable energy sources, such as gas and nuclear, has led to an increase in electricity prices, which directly affects consumers. The rise in electricity bills is a hot topic, especially in a context where the household economy is under pressure from other factors. In July, because more electricity was purchased from gas-fired power stations, the average bill for consumers went up by 14%, the highest cost since last February. There is a major discussion as to whether the planned closure of five active nuclear power stations with seven reactors from 2027 to 2035 is a good idea, but their electricity is quite expensive. Prolonging their life means enormous investments that at present has been vetoed by central government so that the cost is not passed on to consumers. Endesa and Iberdrola have written to the Vice-President and Minister for Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, and propose that the ones
due to shut in 2027 and 2028 continue to be in use for another three years. The discussion is stated to be “cordial” and “constructive.” Sara Aagesen has reiterated that any extensions cannot entail an extra cost for consumers. Secondly, that the requirements determined by the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) in terms of nuclear safety must be met. And finally, it is essential that security of supply is guaranteed in accordance with the requirements of the electricity system operator REE. Both companies have stated that that the current closure schedule implies an added cost for consumers, which would be avoided by extending the life of some plants. The extra cost they suggest depends on where electricity is generated, and renewable energy from solar, wind farms and hydroelectric dams is the cheapest.
In mid-July there were three deaths on consecutive days in the sea at San Juan de Los Terreros, on a beach in Almerimar, and in the sea in Mojácar. On Wednesday, July 16th a young man from Lorca who had come to take part in a football competition in Pulpí jumped into the sea from the Pichirichi rocks promontory at San Juan de Los Terreros which is a frequent event. On this occasion he was affected by strong currents and friends could not get to him. The emergency services gave him CPR, but he was pronounced dead after this failed. In Almerimar on Thursday, June 17th a 77-year-old woman who was on holiday collapsed on the beach and attempts to revive her were not successful and it was stated that she had suffered a heart attack. On Friday, July 18th a man stated to be age 61 who lived in Sorbas, according to the town hall, was pulled from the sea opposite the Pueblo Indalo in Mojácar after he was seen to have collapsed. Emergency services rushed to the scene including the 061-trauma ambulance based in Vera. The 061 helicopter was scrambled and in the case of Mojácar it lands on the football pitch where a patient in an ambulance is transferred. In this case it was not needed. It was stated that the man was standing in the sea, not swimming. He could not be revived, and it was concluded that he had suffered a heart attack. Tragically, there was a further death a few days later on the same beach. A French surfer, stated to be very experienced, got
into difficulties and was pulled out of the sea, but the emergency services were unable to revive him. Witnesses stated that there was a red flag flying at the time. In Spain, with any sudden unexplained death in the home, street or on a beach or in the sea, a body cannot be moved until a coroner arrives and authorises this, and there will be an autopsy. Where a death occurs on a beach this can be upsetting for other people and may seem callous, but the coroner has to be located and asked to attend. This is the standard procedure that has to followed in all sudden unexplained deaths. 82% of the victims of drowning are men, with the majority over 65. The difference between the sexes is explained by the fact that men are more likely to get involved in risky situations and have greater vulnerability being elderly, from pathologies that in combination with water can be fatal, such as a heart attack, dizziness, or a rise in blood pressure.
A reader has asked the ‘Focus’ magazine if we have any advice regarding the extreme difficulty in renewing the TIE cards that have an expiry date of five years from or before January 1st, 2021. Unfortunately, this is a problem not only for Brits, but other nationalities as well. The primary hurdle is the extreme difficulty in securing an appointment, known as a ‘cita previa’, at the local ‘Extranjería’ (foreigners offices) with the main one for our area in Almería city. He has regularly tried to get an appointment, so far without success. Adding to the problem, recent reforms to Spain’s migration laws have substantially increased the workload for immigration staff resulting in a general backlog. The British Embassy in Spain has had talks with the Spanish Government requesting an increase in the number of available appointments. However, tangible improvements are not yet widely apparent, particularly in major cities. A TIE card can be renewed and become a 10 year one, 30 days prior to the expiry date or within 90 days afterwards. The Citizens Advice Bureau in Spain has stated that “If you moved to Spain before January 1st, 2021, and registered under the Withdrawal Agreement, your residency rights are protected apart from having a valid TIE card. Although the above refers specifically
to holders of permanent residence cards, under the Withdrawal Agreement, the right of permanent residence itself is acquired by law, by lawfully residing in the host State for five continuous years, not by holding the card. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that the same principle should apply to those who have reached permanent resident status through five years of lawful residence, even if they are only now updating their cards to reflect this new status. Regarding the loss of residency rights, Article 15(3) of the Withdrawal Agreement specifies: [Once acquired, the right of permanent residence shall be lost only through absence from the host State for a period exceeding five consecutive years]. This means that if you remain living in Spain, you cannot lose your status just because of a delay in renewing your card. So even if your TIE appointment is delayed and your card expires, your legal right to reside continues”.
Figures for July and August have not yet been totalled up, but tourism generated a total of 248.5 million euros in Almeria province between the inclusive months of April to June, according to the Andalusian Tourism Survey (ECTA). This estimate is obtained by calculating the 706,660 tourists who visited the province during the second quarter of the year, with the data on the average stay in the province that was 5.3 days, and the average daily expenditure per person, which is around 66.50 euros according to the survey. The average daily expenditure is an increase of 5.7 percent compared to the same period in 2024 when it was 62.90 euros. As regards Almería airport, during July there were 96,374 passengers, of which 56,902 were international and 39,472 national, so international traffic was 59% of the total. Numbers from the UK totalled 33,516 people, 35% of the airport’s international arrivals up 22% from 2024. Passengers from Manchester, the second major international destination were 9,539 down 20.6% from 2024. London-Stansted brought 4,595 down 0.7%, from Birmingham 4,529 down 0.5% and LondonGatwick 4,454 up 16.7%. Bristol stood out with 3,969 passengers up 198.2%, whilst London-Luton remained stable with 2,793 passengers. Despite this,
restaurants and bars in our area stated that there was a notable drop in Brits in August. Traditionally, during September, UK tourists are people without children and their spending amount goes up.
The delegate of Health and Consumer Affairs of the Junta de Andalucía, Juan de la Cruz Belmonte, came to Mojácar, Níjar and Zurgena town halls during August where the Directorate General of Public Health and Pharmaceutical Regulation had detected circulation of the West Nile virus in ‘Culex pipiens’ mosquitoes caught in traps. He explained that disinfestation treatments have been reinforced and they were making themselves available to the municipalities and the companies in charge “for coordination and help in any type of public health consultation”. He called for calm stating that “80% of the bites of mosquitoes that transmit West Nile virus are asymptomatic with no noticeable health problems at all, in 19% of cases people may have flu-like and self-limiting symptoms for two to five days, and less than 1% develop major problems of severe neurological diseases such as encephalitis or meningitis.” He stated that since mosquitoes are the primary vectors for West Nile virus, preventing mosquito bites is crucial. This can be achieved by using insect repellent containing DEET, wearing long sleeves and trousers especially during peak mosquito activity times (dawn and dusk) and eliminating standing water around your home as this is where mosquitoes breed.
The Almería Port Authority have presented their figures for the first half of the year, which are very impressive. Overall port traffic increased by 11.84% compared to the same period in 2024, totalling 2.9 million tonnes. Gypsum exports were 1.5 million tonnes up 15.83%, and general ro-ro goods in containers went up by more than 25%. Other general goods increased by 12.3%. Regarding passengers, although the number of passengers fell slightly by 2.4% to 201,639 it is still a good figure considering that 2024 was a year of exponential growth with an annual increase of 17.3%. The number of vehicles that had embarked and disembarked in
Almería Port increased by 1.6% reaching 61,390. Fishing also closed the first six months of the year in very positive terms with the volume of landings amounting to 2,494 tonnes, up 56.2%.
On August 6th, Mexico joined with Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Colombia in banning the sale of this toothpaste. Their health authorities warn that using it can lead to adverse effects such as inflammation of the gums, tooth sensitivity, canker sores or ulcers, as well as an allergic reaction to the ingredients. The Mexican authorities gave the manufactures a period of 30 days to withdraw the product from the points of sale where it was marketed. They also asked users to report if they have suffered any of the side effects, and if they have unused tubes of toothpastes to ask staff at the point of sale to provide them with a different one. At the end of March, in Brazil, they also issued their recommendations for ‘Colgate Total Active Prevention’ toothpaste that had been launched with a new formula in July 2024. They pick out the presence of stannous fluoride that they say is the problem. The purpose of this main ingredient, which is 0.454%, is to fight cavities, gingivitis, and tooth sensitivity. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. National Health Department, use should be avoided for more than four weeks unless a dentist recommends otherwise, be kept out of the reach of children, and to stop using it if gingivitis persists or if symptoms of periodontitis occur. It is still on sale in the US at present.
Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, has said that Spain needs 40,000 homes at a price that young people can afford to buy. Between January 1st and June 30th there were 357,533 home sales registered, the highest number in almost two decades. This is an increase, compared to last year’s data, of almost 20%. The vast majority are secondhand sales with only 20% of new properties. The average value of new and used properties grew by 1.5% in July compared to June with that shows a rise of 11.5% in the last 12 months. The company ‘Tinsa’
who value properties mostly for mortgages, points out that the increase “has been remarkable” in capitals and large cities. Of course, with continuing rises in cost this doesn’t imply that young people are purchasing a large number and the reverse is probably true.
On July 28th it was announced that the EU as a bloc, had accepted a tariff of 15% in general, and there will be no “reciprocal” tariffs on US goods entering the EU. The 15% will apply to cars and “probably” steel, aluminium and copper that has a 50% tariff at present. In return, the EU has agreed to buy energy such as LPG (liquid petroleum gas) oil and nuclear energy (reactors) to the value of 640 billion euros over the next three years, so until Trump is no longer the President. Ursula Von der Leyen, the EU President, has stated that this will mean that no energy needs to be imported from Russia which is a good thing. Also, to meet the 5% spent on defence and armaments, that NATO countries have agreed to, the EU will buy large amounts of military hardware from the US, without a specific figure at present. Analysts point out that the increased energy and defence purchases are going to be very difficult for the US to police and may well be reduced amounts in reality. Also, the EU has agreed to invest 600 million euros in the US and Trump is now claiming, “And that’s a gift, it’s not a loan, we can invest in whatever we want. They have been taking advantage of us for so many years that it is time for them to pay, and they are going to pay”. He threatens that if this does not materialise, the 15% tariff will go up to 35%. As regards Spain, only 5% of goods are exported to the US so this is better than many other EU states. There will be further negotiations but the calculation from the Bank of Spain is that GDP (Gross National Product) will be affected with a drop of 0.15%. When he was President in his first term there were tariffs on Spanish wine. The US is the second destination country for conventional Spanish bottled wines, only behind the United Kingdom, and the first for sparkling wines, according to the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV). In 2024, sales to the US were a total value of 390 million euros. Olive oil is another
victim, part of agrifood products worth 3.5 billion euros. Of this total, more than 1 billion correspond to olive oil sales. However, more than 30% of the olive oil bought in the US is of Spanish origin, similar to that of olives. With the last tariffs in place, US consumers continued to buy olive oil, even though it had gone up in price. Spanish companies involved in machinery manufacture, electronic and mechanical goods was more than 4 billion euros last year and more than 1 billion euros from the manufacture of stone, plaster, glass and jewellery that will now have the 15% tariff. Ursula Von der Leyen has announced that there are a number of European goods considered strategic ones to which a “zero tariff” will be applied. These include certain chemicals, aviation components, some medicines and chips and some other agricultural products. Spain sells automobile components to other EU states that export them to the US in a different form that will then have the 15% tariff applied. On the other hand, the EU is engaging with other countries to take goods, including Spanish ones, to cut down exports to the US. Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, has had fruitful contact with China, who consider Spain to be a good country to sell their goods, or open factories. Juanma Moreno, the President of the Junta de Andalucía, was engaged in talks with trade delegations from Japan at the start of July including the proposal that there might be direct flights from Japan to airports in Andalucía that would result in more Japanese tourists. He followed this up with a visit to Japan along with a team to discuss trade expansion, and he claims that talks were very constructive in several areas. The general conclusion by financial pundits in the US is that tariffs, including the 15% from the EU, will eventually mean that wide range of goods are more expensive for consumers in the US.
A couple from Catalonia were renting a property and they could see that getting on the property purchase ladder was impossible. In 2023 they formed a start-up company habitacions.com. They buy apartments with generous room areas, totally renovate them to a high standard, and sell individual rooms. The prices range from 60,000 euros to

90,000 euros depending on whether there is a bathroom, a kitchenette or a balcony. Ownership of the property is divided proportionally according to the m2 of the room plus an equal percentage of the common areas. The sales are done through a notary as normal and put on the Property Register in their name. By the end of 2024 they had achieved sales of 80 rooms totalling 3.4 million euros and a revenue of 1.4 million euros. At present they are not making a profit but expect to do this in 2026 with an estimated 400 sales this year, and they claim that they have 21,000 people on a waiting list. They say that the maths is easy and if a renter pays a monthly rent of 450 euros this is 5,400 euros per annum. As a co-owner, with the same monthly payment, they’ll be generating a property asset. Within five years, they can get more than 20,000 euros over the original purchase price if they want to sell the room, using the money to buy a property, and the company states that they may consider buying back the property to add to their stock. The rooms can be bought upfront, but the most common option for buyers is to take out a loan that is easy to obtain and they work with a finance company. At present, they operate in Barcelona, Marid, Valencia and Granada where rents are high.
Near the end of July, the Spanish Parliament hurriedly passed a new law for maternity leave that the EU had told them had to be done by August 2024. Paternity and maternity leave split between the parents has gone up from 16 to 17 weeks before a child is age one, with two additional weeks for childcare until the age of 8. There are also 3 weeks for breastfeeding taking the combined total to 22 weeks. For single-parent families (80% are mothers) it has been raised to 28 weeks before the age of one with another 4 until the child is aged 8. A parent or single parent can also have up to 8 weeks of unpaid leave before this age primarily, but not exclusively, for illness. The money paid during maternity leave is 100% of wages or a salary, and it comes from the Social Security Department. To satisfy the EU the changes are retrospective for any children born after August 2nd, 2024, because they have been threatening fines from
August 2024 if the law in Spain was not changed. On July 31st the EU announced a fine of 6.8 billion euros and 19.700 euros per day because “Spain has persistently ignored the legal requirement to change the maternity / paternity regulations.” Perhaps, because Spain has made the changes they may get out of having to pay the daily fine?
The giant Chinese company ‘CATL’ that makes electric car batteries went onto the Chinese stock exchange recently as a public company. Shares purchased amounted to the equivalent of 4,000 billion euros. Some of the money is being used to construct a huge factory in Hungary, part of its plan to produce batteries in Europe for BMW, the Stellantis group and Volkswagen. Also, along with Stellantis they have started to build an electric car battery gigafactory in Zaragoza, with an investment of around 4.1 billion euros. This is part of a trend for Chinese companies to manufacture goods in Europe, so they are “made in the EU”. There are several projects for manufacture in Spain including electric cars. Chinese companies consider that Spain is a good country for expansion, partly because of the integration of Chinese people within Spain, a buoyant economy and subsidies to attract them here.
Companies in Spain who employ ‘riders’ to deliver items such as food have been forced to make them employees, not self-employed people who work with them. As employees the company has to make Social Security payments for them. The ‘Glovo’ company in Seville has been fined 847,639 euros because 64 non-Spanish riders were not registered with the Social Security system as employees and they lacked any residence or work permits. The first sanction relating to 20 workers and the nonpayment of Social Security amounted to 210,649 euros and the second sanction is for 44 workers and the non-payment of 636,990 euros.
We have previously explained that Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, is committed to welcome non-Spanish migrants as they are needed to cater
for vacancies in various sectors and contribute to the economy. We comment on this in an article. Figures from the end of the second quarter showed that 22.27 million people were paying into the Spanish Social Security system, and this is a record number with 503,300 more people from April to June. Spanish people in work made up 356,300 of the 503,300. There are now more than 12 million households with all their active members employed, increasing by 290,300 from April to June. People on the unemployment register fell to 10.29%, the lowest since 2008 when the construction crisis occurred. On July 24th, Juana Moreno, the Junta de Andalucía President, announced “a new record” in labour matters by registering “the highest number of people working” in the history of the autonomous community. At the end of June, unemployment fell by 50,600 people in the second quarter to 618,600, some 7.6% less than the first quarter. It is now below the 15% barrier for the first time in 16 years. 70,600 jobs were created bringing the total number of employed people to 3,5 million, the highest number of people in work in a second quarter of any year since records began.
The Spanish stock exchange, Ibex 35, was regularly close to 14,200 points during July which is a reflection of good results, profit levels and forecasts, particularly from major companies such as banks. On July 24th the Ibex reached 14,215.8 points after rising 1% at the opening at 9am, boosted by excellent half-year results from Banco Sabadell with a profit of 975 million euros up 23% compared to last year, and Bankinter declared a profit of 542 million up 14%, and there were similar good results from Repsol. The belief that the Central European Bank will probably reduce their interest rate this September also helped the rise. Apart from this, the excellent figures for people in work and a reduction in the unemployed helped. We comment on this in another news item. After the 15% tariffs were announced for the EU, and Spain has far less exposure than many other EU countries, the Ibex peaked at 14,705 points on August 8th, the highest since 2008. The interest rate on Spanish 10yr bonds also dropped to 3.208%. A low percentage shows
that investors were keen to buy them, and they can be traded like shares. Germany had breathed a sigh of relief as the 15% directly affects their substantial automobile exports and the tariff is the same for Japanese and South Korean cars. Spain does not export any cars to the US, partly because of the exorbitant cost of shipping them. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and President Donald Trump agreed on more US cars being imported into the EU, but many of them lack the certification that will be needed.
In July the Ministry of Agriculture announced the figures from the 2024-2025 season in Almería province. Stone, marble and synthetic products are a very important sector for production and exports, but agriculture is the main industry. The figures show 3.7 billion euros in exports, 14% better than the 2023-2024 period and the total tonnage was 2.5 million which was an increase of 5%. In terms of the value of the products marketed, peppers stand out with a value of 1.43 billion euros, up 25%, tomatoes with a value of 908 million euros, up 18%, cucumbers with a value of 677 million euros, up 32.5%, watermelons with a value of 478 million euros, up 34%, and courgettes with a value of 373 million euros was up by 3.5%. The total production sold in Spain and abroad was 4 billion tonnes, up 2.3%. This season, the total production area was 62,743 hectares (242 sq. miles), up 2%. Products grown under cover took up 127 sq. miles but provide a winter and spring double cycle. The Secretary General of Agriculture, Manuel Gómez, stated that “these figures show the excellent potential to continue positioning ourselves in the national and international market.” Germany is traditionally the main market for Almeria’s fruit and vegetables worth 1.4 billion euros, France with 468.77 million euros, the UK with 441.28 million euros, the Netherlands with 425.26 million euros and Poland, a relatively new market, with 192.73 million euros.
Spain considers that the predominant religion by far is Roman Catholicism. Figures recently published from last year in our province show that 82%
(1,881) were “civil” marriages and only 18% (434) took place in church. As regards the nationality of the couples, out of the 2,416 marriages, some 1,891were between Spaniards. In 446 cases one of them was a foreigner, and in 70 marriages both were non-Spanish. By age, on 232 occasions the bride and groom were the same age, while in 439 the difference was one year, and two years in another 353. 275 couples had an age difference of 10 years or more. In global terms, the number of marriages registered last year in Andalucía was 32,467 which was 0.5% less than in 2023. Some 4,511 marriages had a spouse of foreign nationality, and 31,248 were between people of the opposite sex. In our province last year, 1,219 were same-sex marriages, 3.8% of the total. 53.7% of these were between women and the other 46.3% were between two men.
The Andalucía aerospace sector had a turnover of more than 2.9 billion euros in 2024 with 15,496 direct jobs. This is an increase of 6.84% compared to 2023, and in the last decade the turnover has grown by 29.86%. It is made up of 148 companies with 105 in Seville, 23 in Cádiz, 13 in Málaga, three in Córdoba, two in Jaén, one in Huelva and one in Granada, and the military version of the Airbus is assembled in Seville. At the start of August, the Swiss aeronautical multinational ‘Pilatus’ company, specialising in the production of private jets and military training aircraft, announced plans to build a second jet component factory at Carmona in Seville. A regional subsidy of 2.23 million euros is promised with an initial investment of 8.93 million euros. There will be a workforce of about 50 people at the start-up that in the medium term will go up to 500. The Minister of Industry, Jorge Paradela, came to Seville recently and stated that “The Andalucía aerospace industry is in a strategic position to face the great challenges of the sector, including the increase in global demand for civil aviation orders, the increase in European defence spending, and new international programmes for unmanned systems. The CEUS company in Moguer (Huelva), the ATLAS company in Villacarrillo (Jaén) and TRC in Seville have opened up a field for drones that we must transform into new industrial opportunities”.
A company in Seville produce drones that are being bought by the Spanish military. The drone has four missiles and each one is capable of destroying a tank. Drones used in Ukraine are single-use or “kamikaze ones” because they explode when they release their payload. The ones from Seville can be re-programmed in flight when it is considered that they have been detected. If this doesn’t work, they nose-dive to the ground and are destroyed on impact. Spain has agreed to supply NATO countries with anti-drone defence capabilities as the proposal is to have a “drone-wall” system to protect Europe’s eastern borders from Russian attack. The Spanish Ministry of Defence already uses an anti-drone system called Cervus III, from the Spanish company TRC. This is designed to neutralise any drone detected within a range of four kilometres.
In May 2024, the large BBVA bank made a hostile take-over bid for the Catalan Sabadell bank. Their offer has been amended several times, and the Spanish government have put forward some conditions to keep the two banks independent for three years, with no collective dismissals or bank branch closures, although they will technically be one entity. Sabadell own the UK TSB bank that had recently been put up for sale. The guide price was 2 billion euros but Barclays bid 3 billion and Banco Santander bid 3.1 billion so this offer was been accepted. Sabadell shares have gone up by 5% with a large shareholder dividend promised, so BBVA may have to make an increased offer. It is expected that some of Sabadell’s shareholders will quicky sell to get the increased value, rather than wait for the merger that will further complicate it. The fusion will make it the largest bank in Spain.
If high temperatures continue into September, there is a trick that has been highlighted by the Spanish ‘El Motor’ magazine regarding cars. Their advice is to open the passenger window all the way down, and open and pull the driver’s door quickly several times. It doesn’t have to be closed every time. This forces hot air out and the claim is that it can reduce the temperature by as much as 10 degrees.
In July, the DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) introduced 130 new or modified traffic signs that will be introduced or modified progressively. Existing traffic signs were generally approved in 2003 so many are considered out of date and do not reflect changes in modern traffic. The DGT state that the changes aim to ensure that the road signage system transmits clear, direct messages and is “universally understood”. One new sign shows an electric personal mobility scooter that will be placed in areas where they are not allowed, such as on interurban roads. One current sign shows a steam train with smoke coming out of it, as a warning when there may not be any barriers. This has been replaced by one showing a normal modern train, or metro train, that are common in many cities with rails sunk into the road surface. One new sign warns of the presence of boars that are the chief cause of 40% of accidents involving animals. The existing signs that show deer remain the same, accounting for 32% of accidents. One stands out, that warns of the presence of children in the proximity of a school area. The current sign shows a boy holding the hand of a girl who is running after him to school, which has been understood to be “discriminatory”. The new one is completely the opposite and a girl with a pony tail and a larger school bag is running in front of the boy, holding his hand! An existing sign designed to warn of bad visibility, fog, rain or snow in certain areas has some dots in the air round a car. This has often been confused with falling stones and it is also similar to signs for low emission zones. The replacement sign has a number of horizontal lines with only half of the car showing. The octagonal “stop” signs remain the same shape but with much larger letters. The Spanish Road Association, which carries out visual inspections every two years, states that it is necessary to renew 100,000 signs in the state network and another 260,000 in the regional network. This is because most of them have exceeded the six, eight or ten years of warranty from the manufactures of reflective signs that have deteriorated and do not guarantee full visibility at night. They claim that many of them are in a deplorable condition that is dangerous. The new or modified signs will not be
immediately incorporated into the theory tests for obtaining driving permits and licences. After the entry into force of the regulation, a minimum period of three months will be applied before their inclusion in the exams in order to allow the updating of the training manuals and ensure that applicants have the necessary time to adequately prepare for them.
In early 2025, the Spanish National police were contacted by their French counterparts who warned that a criminal organisation was bringing in huge quantities of cannabis from Spain to France in a lorry, for distribution in Europe. The Moroccan anti-drug police were contacted as it was alleged that the articulated lorry came from Nador and then arrived in Almería port on the ferry. A particular lorry was identified and after it left the port in Almería in July, it went on a complicated route, designed to hide the ultimate destination that was in Huércal de Almería. Police raided the warehouse and arrested five people, and an inspection of the cargo revealed that it was carrying water melons and sweet potatoes that were actually made of plastic. Various bales of drugs were concealed in these fake potato sacks that totalled 15.3 tons, with an estimated street value of 105 million euros, the largest haul of drugs discovered in Almería. The lorry was seized along with mobile phones and cash. The National police stated that there were ongoing investigations in France, Spain and Morocco and further arrests were expected. The pallets of watermelons were distributed to local food banks.
Hippos have such big and dense bones that they’re barely buoyant at all. They don’t swim and instead, they perform a slow-motion fast walk on a riverbed or on the sea floor. Hippos can even sleep underwater thanks to a built-in reflex that allows them to bob up, take a breath, and sink back down without waking. They are native to sub-Saharan Africa and are mostly herbivorous. Hippos are the third largest land mammals after elephants and white rhinos and can weigh up to 3.300lbs. Male hippos are known as ‘bulls‘, female hippos are ‘cows‘, and babies are ‘calves‘. They are very dangerous and kill an estimated 500 people a year.
Deaf people are known to use sign language in their sleep. A case study of a 71-year-old man with rapid eye movement disorder and a severe hearing impairment showed him using fluent sign language in his sleep, with researchers able to get an idea of what he was dreaming about. Some sign languages are known to have developed spontaneously in small communities. Martha’s Vineyard, an island in Massachusetts, USA, was settled by people carrying a gene causing deafness in the late 17th century. Limited outside contact and inter-marriage led to a high density of deaf individuals that peaked around 1830 to 1840.
Mount Everest, known locally as Sagarmatha in Nepal and Qomolangma in Tibet, isn’t the tallest mountain on Earth. Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa in Hawaii that are twin volcanoes are taller than Mount Everest because 4.2km of their height is submerged underwater. The twin volcanoes measure 10.2km compared to Everest’s 8.8km but Mount Everest is Earth’s highest mountain above sea level. It was measured in 2020 by Chinese and Nepali authorities as being 8,848.86m, which is 29,031ft and 8.5ins. The Western name is often mispronounced “Ever-est” or “Ev-rest,” despite Sir George Everest’s surname being “EVE-rest.”
Despite the famous idiom, “You are as blind as a bat”, they can actually see, but they still use their even more famous echolocation to find prey. Bats can be found on nearly every part of the planet except in extreme deserts and polar regions and more than 1,400 species are currently recognized world-wide. Some fossilised remains date to approximately 52 million years ago. Bats aren’t seen as one of the most exciting or loveable animals and in fact, many people are afraid of them with their bad reputation for being creatures that lurk at night. The idea that they are vampires has been deeply seeded into various cultures.
The Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan hotel in Yamanashi, Japan, holds the Guinness World Record for being the oldest hotel in the world. This status was given to it in 2011 because records dated back to when it opened and was founded by Fujiwara Mahito in 705 A.D. He was the son of an aide to the 38th Emperor of Japan, Emperor Tenji. Since then, it’s been in the hands of 52 generations of the same family for more than 1,300 years thanks to a practice common in Japan known as “adult adoption.” This method allows a capable employee, who is deemed fit to take over the hotel as the owner ages, being adopted into the owner’s family.
The first Barbie was created in 1959, available as a blond or brunette, by Ruth Handler. Together with her husband, Handler co-founded the Mattel Toy Company. According to the story, Handler watched her daughter play with paper dolls with friends and noticed that they were playing “future” instead of “present” scenes and they depicted adults. She developed the new doll inspired by a famous German doll that she had discovered during a trip. The doll was christened Barbie after her daughter, Barbara, and when Ken was invented later it was named after her son. Last year, Mattel had sold over a billion Barbie dolls, their most profitable item.
Personal mobility vehicles (‘PMV’) are primarily e-scooters, and in the last three years their use has mushroomed. The total number in Spain is estimated to be “at least” seven million.
There has been a lack of national regulations for some time, but the Spanish Parliament has passed an amendment to the Automobile Insurance Law. From next January, owners are obliged to have a civil liability insurance policy that already applies to all other vehicle owners. When e-scooters are involved in an accident and the driver is to blame, the third party that can be a person, vehicle owner, or owner of premises, has great difficulty in claiming compensation. In the case of minors, the parent or guardian is responsible. In extreme cases the driver or parent has declared themselves insolvent to avoid a high compensation. In other cases, their assets have been seized. Most insurance companies now offer this type of cover or more comprehensive ones.
Also, it has been proposed for some time that town halls should keep a register of owners, but before next January 2nd, the ‘DGT’ (The Spanish Traffic Authority) will introduce their own national database to include PMVs which already applies to all other vehicles except bicycles.
An existing “hole” in national requirements is the obligation to wear a helmet. The director of the Maxillofacial Department at the Torrecárdenas hospital, Fernando Gálvez, is pleading with e-scooter users that they must wear one. He states that almost every day, in their accident and emergency department, there are people who have had a collision on an e-scooter, usually with a vehicle, and 60% have facial or skull injuries that can be severe. They may need surgery under anaesthetic and hospitalisation for several days. Other injuries with e-scooters are fractures that need surgery to insert plates or screws.
He states that before e-scooters, these types of injuries were almost nil and usually applied to an
elderly person who had experienced a bad fall, or people or pedestrians involved in a serious traffic accident. He points out that the 25km/h limit in place for new e-scooters is still a dangerous speed, and if everybody wears an approved helmet the statistics they are experiencing will reduce drastically. Along with many other municipalities in our province, it is only “recommended” in Almería City and Granada, but in Valencia, Barcelona, Málaga and Córdoba it is compulsory.
The local police in Almería city have continual checks on e-scooters. Figures for this year cannot be calculated at present, but there were 268 accidents in 2022, 405 including one death in 2023 (51% more), and 273 in 2024 up until the end of July. In the same 3 periods 22, 25 (14% more) and 22 people needed prolonged hospitalisation. Accidents that did not result in a stay in hospital were 263, 402 (53% more) and 264. E-scooters cannot travel on non-urban roads but out of those who ignored this, accidents were 3, 4 and one death.
In June this year 52 people were fined in Almería city, and the illegal activities included driving against the traffic flow, on pavements, using a mobile phone or wireless music, not dismounting on zebra crossings, ignoring traffic signs, no lights or reflective jackets at night or two people on one e-scooter. Fines are generally 200 euros, up to 1,000 euros if under the effect of alcohol, and 1,000 euros and the confiscation of the scooter if positive for drugs. The local police go to schools to explain the regulations and also the highway code, completely unknown to most pupils.
Changes will begin to come into force on October 12th for all countries not in the EU including the UK. Instead of getting your passport stamped, there are biometric checks. Passengers have to have their fingerprints taken and faces scanned at an EU border
The Entry/Exit System (EES) scheme will not be fully implemented until April 10th 2026. The EU website states, “The Entry/Exit System (EES) will be deployed gradually across the external borders of the 29 European countries over a period of 6 months. European countries will introduce the collection of biometric data in phases including the collection of biometric data such as facial image and fingerprints. This means that they may not be collected at every border crossing point right away, and their personal information will not be registered in the system. Passports will continue to be stamped as usual. This progressive implementation will last until April 9th 2026 when the EES will be fully operational at all external border crossing points of the European countries using the system”.
Whether you are travelling by plane, boat or train, there will be places for scanning your fingerprint and taking a photo. This will be valid for three years once you have initially provided the data. After this, the process will be much quicker as you will only need to get your data verified when travelling. Many people are worried about long queues which may form when the system is first introduced, as providing data and checks can take several minutes.
The UK government has been working closely with the European Commission, Member States, local authorities and the travel industry to prepare ports for EES. The government is helping ports and carriers to ensure EES registration is simple for people travelling to the Schengen area. They are giving Eurostar, Eurotunnel and the Port of Dover £3.5 million each, to spend on registration kiosks and infrastructure. UK and non-EU travellers using Eurostar from London St Pancras International will
need to use self-service pre-registration kiosks, which will be located in three areas of the station, before going through the ticket gates. UK and non-EU travellers using Eurotunnel at Folkestone will be directed to a purpose-built pre-registration area to use self-service pre-registration kiosks, before continuing to embark on their journey.
Sailings on Cruise Ships that start and finish their journey outside of the Schengen area (i.e. at UK ports) will generally be exempt from EES checks, including any day trips into the Schengen area that are part of the planned itinerary. Travellers who disembark a cruise within the Schengen area, and travel on to a further destination, including an alternative port, or by other means, will need to complete EES checks when leaving the ship. Any travellers boarding a cruise within the Schengen area will need to complete EES checks at their initial port of entry to the Schengen area.
The EES scheme is part of wider plans that the EU is doing to strengthen their border security. In 2026, the EU is expected to start operations of the new European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). No action is required from travellers at this time and the EU will announce the specific date for the start before the launch. When ETIAS is introduced, you will need to apply for authorisation to enter Schengen area countries if you have a UK passport. You need to provide personal information and details about your trip, and pay a 20 euro fee, as part of the authorisation process. As yet, there is no indication when Spain will start carrying it out.
There are new requirements for mobile phones and tablets sold in the EU. From June 20th, smartphones, conventional mobile phones, cordless phones and tablets marketed in the European Union must comply with new eco-design and energy labelling requirements. The main objective is to increase the useful life of these products and reduce their environmental impact.
Mandatory technical requirements include: Increased resistance to accidental drops and scratches, and protection against dust and water. Longer-lasting batteries that withstand at least 800 charge-discharge cycles, maintaining at least 80% of their initial capacity. Obligation for manufacturers to provide critical spare parts within 5 to 10 working days, for 7 years after the end of the model’s marketing. Availability of operating system updates for at least 5 years from the cessation of marketing of the device. Non-discriminatory access for professional repairers to software required for component replacement
Smartphones and tablets must display information about their energy efficiency, battery longevity, protection against dust and water, and resistance to accidental drops. For the first time, a reparability score will also be included in products placed on the EU market.
This labelling system will allow European consumers to make more informed and sustainable purchasing
decisions, according to the EU, and users will be able to access more detailed information on the models through the European Register of Products with Energy Labelling (EPREL) through a QR code included in the new labels.
According to official estimates published by Brussels, these measures will save almost 14 terawatt-hours of primary energy per year by 2030, which is a third of the current energy consumption of these products. In addition, they will contribute to optimising the use and recycling of critical raw materials. Extending the average lifespan of these devices from 3 to 4.1 years for a mid-range smartphone, will lead to a reduction in annual sales and therefore lower acquisition costs for users. It is estimated that by 2030, the savings in acquisition costs in the EU will be 20 billion euros, which together with 600 million in energy savings and an additional 800 million in repair costs, will result in a net
saving of 21.4 billion euros which is 106 98 euros per household.
The EU considers that these new regulations represent an important step towards a more circular economy in the technology sector, which will favour the durability, repairability and sustainability of everyday devices for millions of Europeans.
Theright-wing Vox political party has published a survey that they state shows that there are too many non-Spanish people living in Spain. Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, entirely disagrees and considers that Spain cannot operate without migrants who boost the economy. The Ministry of Labour has a long list of occupations where vacances are “difficult to fill” and there is a new fast-track procedure for visas and work permits for migrants to address this situation. A new feature is that a work permit can be obtained before they have found employment, instead of having to wait until they have found a job.
Vox claim that out of a total population of 47 million inhabitants there are 9.3 million people who have come from abroad. 3 million have taken Spanish nationality and the remainder keep their own nationality. In 2002 there were 1.66 million, which was only 5.6%. Currently, Latin American countries account for more than 4 million, European countries with 2.4 million, followed by African countries with 1.5 million. Morocco is the main origin and is the only one with more than one million people, and in the last decade they have grown by 50%. A spectacular increase since the pandemic is Colombia with 74% more people, Venezuela with 57% more and Peru with 60% more.
Almost three out of four non-Spanish, 73%, are aged between 20-64 but those born in Spain make up only 53%. The 73% represent 22% aged 20-24, 28% aged 25-35, 26% between ages 3539, and 23% between 40-44, so this is a younger population with a longer working life. One of the main contributions to the rejuvenation of Spanish society are the children of foreign parents. In 30% of births in Spain in 2024, one or both parents were born in another country and 1.5 million children up to the age of 17 born in Spain have at least one foreign parent, 20% of the total. This is not new, it is a stable trend since 2010.
In June, non-Spanish workers paying into the Social Security system (so they are legal) exceeded
3 million for the first time, contributing to a record number. Employment figures for June in Almería province show that more than 7,400 non-Spanish were in work and almost half of those contracts corresponded to the agricultural, livestock, forestry or fishing sectors. The most common occupation is that of agricultural and forestry labourers with a total of 4,747 registered contracts. This category includes those who carry out basic tasks such as fruit and vegetable harvesting, sowing, pruning, clearing or preparing the land. This is hard work, poorly paid in many cases, and the worker usually has little or no previous training. Other sectors with the highest number of non-Spanish were 1,511 in the hotel and catering industry, 554 in construction, 879 in commerce and 293 in administrative and auxiliary activities. Pedro Sánchez considers that in the main, Spanish people do not want to have most of these jobs.
According to an analysis of European data, 54% of non-Spanish with university degrees obtained in Spain are overqualified for the jobs they have obtained below their educational level. Pedro Sánchez states that industry and commerce will increase their productivity and profits if they employ people in this category.
The annual report from the Bank of Spain highlights that from 2019-2024, 76% of all new jobs in Spain went to people born abroad and this is a key factor in meeting the demand in the main sectors where there is greatest need for workers.

Everything Will Be Alright in the End.
So, If It Is Not Alright...It Is
by Chrissie Cremore
Would you like to travel to India? Indulge yourself within the sounds, smells and dazzling atmosphere of a bustling city with its mix of traditional social structures? Well, The Indalo Players are about to transport you with their forthcoming production of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel by Deborah Moggach. This is going to be one of the most spectacular, exquisite and intricate productions that they have produced in 26 years.
This comedy-drama is about a group of British retirees, some for financial reasons, who decide to relocate to India for their golden years and take up residence in what they believe is a newly restored luxurious hotel. However, upon their arrival, they discover that the hotel is rather dilapidated and far less palatial than advertised.
Despite their initial disappointment, they find that life and love can begin again in unexpected ways as they navigate their new lives in India. They discover new opportunities of love, friendship and personal growth. The story encourages one to embrace life and find happiness in unforeseen places. As the story unfolds and blossoms, it will make one laugh, cry, be inspired, feel adventurous and hopeful about what life holds in store.
The Production Team bringing life into their next theatre project....The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel...set design, floor layout, furniture, props, costumes, make-up, lights, music, action!!

The first bit of good news is that 32 dogs & 3 cats were re-homed during July, including our beautiful boy Duke who was found earlier this year at death’s door. He was taken home by one of our volunteers who nursed him back to health, and his happy ever ending came when our volunteer decided she couldn’t part with him. Happy life together, Sue and Duke.
Our July fundraising results –
804.28 euros from our Music Event at Oasis Bar (including 196 eiuros in loose change given to us by the venue collected from previous customers)
345 euros PAWS-SOME Club membership. Only 15 spaces remaining so quick -you could be one of the lucky ones to turn your 5 euros a month in to vouchers for 250 euros of your choice and in any denomination. You don’t have to live in Spain – we will purchase the vouchers and send them to you.
Now our “thank you’s”... Jimmi´s Bar, Mojácar Playa - 56.40 euros donated by their customers.
Jan’s Jewels - a donation of 130 euros from sales of her wonderful creations.
Stall holders who donated a total of 35 euros from sales at the Craft Fayre at Jimmi’s.
Pauline Snyder who very kindly asked for donations to PAWS-PATAS instead of wedding gifts & raised 200 euros. Congratulations & wishing you every happiness in the future. Kim Reader, a donation of 85 euros from friends & family in lieu of birthday gifts. Hope you had a wonderful birthday Kim.
To every single one of you who supports us in some way, either by volunteering, donating furniture/clothes to our shops or by attending an event, our furry family are forever grateful.
EVENT - Bingo Brunch returns on 4th September at The Snug, Mojácar Playa, 12pm. Just 10 euros for 2 full games of bingo and brunch. Be quick as it’s always a sell out. And our next Book Sale will be at Scotty’s, Mojácar Playa on 9th September from 10.30am-1pm
WE NEED YOUR HELP. We are urgently in need of volunteers, however much time you can give we will be truly grateful. Whether it’s helping with the dogs, puppies, cats or kittens at the shelter or driving our van and helping collect and deliver furniture, we need you. Please get in touch to donate whatever time you can. Also, our furries would be very grateful for any bedding you no longer require. Thank you. martines@paws-patas.org www.paws-patas.org
Six Los Bandidos runners travelled to Balanegra on Saturday, 16th August for the 11th race in the Circuito de Carreras Populares Diputación de Almería 2025.
The three-lap course was advertised as 8.13k. Despite the 8pm start, conditions were still extremely hot and humid. Local supporters lined the route, and Los Bandidos’ own Lesley Davidge was there to cheer on the team and capture action shots. The race saw fast times at the front, with the overall winner crossing the line in 26:06 and the first woman finishing in 33:01.
A total of 191 runners completed the event. Trophies were presented to the top three in each age group and to the overall winners, while every participant went home with a rechargeable fan. Teresa Chance won a podiatry voucher in the raffle.

181 Teresa Chance 53:22 (1st G-F)
Special mention to Guillermo Moscardo Cherel, who placed 8th in the Sub-16 category with a time of 08:18!
Los Bandidos were placed 10th team; Sharon Howlett, Corinne Cherel, John Davidge and Russ Chance in a total time of 3:16:13.

More than just a club, we’re part of the local community. We’re currently collecting nonperishable food and toiletries for the Red Cross Food Bank.
We’re proudly supported by: Alfaix Village Store, Caracola Car Hire, Five Bones Pet Hotel, Heladería Blu, Oasis Fashions, and Restaurante Piamonte. We’re famously sociable! Most of our sessions end with coffee, cake, or breakfast (depending on the time of day, of course). Follow us on Facebook to stay up to date and get involved: facebook.com/groups/490933409244200

A husband took his wife to a disco one weekend. There was a guy on the dance floor breakdancing, moonwalking, doing back flips - the works. The wife turned to husband and said: “See that guy? 25 years ago, he proposed to me and I turned him down.” Her husband says: “Looks like he’s still celebrating!”
Five friends were so confident about passing their exams so on the Saturday before they decided to have a picnic. They had a great time, got very drunk, spent all Sunday sleeping and didn’t get to the college until the exams were over. They told their professor that on Sunday they had gone to an Old People’s home to spend some time with the old people and make them happy. Unfortunately, they had a flat tyre on the way back, didn’t have a spare, and couldn’t get it fixed until the next morning, so they missed the exams. The professor told them they could take them the following day. The guys studied all night and went in the next day. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them the exam paper. The only question on page one was very easy and was worth 5 points. The only question on page two was, “Which tyre?” - for 95 points.
Dad went on a business retreat with the guys for the weekend. I’m his son so I decided to call him and a lady answered, so I told mum about it. Boy! Was she upset! When Dad came home, they got into a very big fight as dad denied ever meeting a woman all weekend. Finally, mum told me, “Tell this cheat what the lady said when you called his number!” I replied, she said, “The number you are calling is not available at the moment please try again later.”
A little boy wants his toy, so he walks up to his mother and says “Mom, give me my toy.” His mother responds by saying, “What are the magic words?” So the little boy says the magic words and his mom gives him his toy.
The next day, the little boy starts kindergarten. At snack time, the little boy wants some juice, so he walks up to his teacher and asks for a juice box. The teacher says “What are the magic words?” So the little boy says the magic words. But the teacher gets upset, and calls the little boy’s mother and asks her to come in. When the three of them are sitting in the room together, the teacher asks the mother; “Have you been teaching your son sarcasm?” “No,” the mother says, “Why, what did he do?” “Well, he asked for a juicebox,” said the teacher, “and I asked him to say the magic words, and instead of saying please, he said ‘you’re thin and you’re beautiful.’”
When a wealthy husband passed, he left $30,000 for an “elaborate funeral.” After the service, a friend asked where all the money went. The widow explained: “$6,500 for the funeral, $500 to the church, $500 for the wake… and the rest fot the memorial stone.” Her friend gasped, “The memorial stone cost $22,500?! My God, how big is it?” The widow smiled and said, “About four and a half carats.”
A mathematician wants more excitement and wants to become a volunteer fireman at weekends. He goes through the training, and then has to take the written final exam.
Question 1: You come across a car that is flipped upside down and on fire with the driver still in it. What do you do? The mathematician answers with the steps he was taught in training. Question 2: You come across a car that is flipped upside down with the driver still in it. What do you do?
The mathematician answers, Set the car on fire, so now it’s a solved problem.
Her daughter was trying to tell her mother something but she said, “Not now, I’m busy. Wait until Daddy gets home.” They wait until Daddy gets home, and then Mummy says “Now dear, what were you saying about Daddy and a strange lady?” Daddy starts to say something but Mummy says, “You keep quiet, carry on, dear.” “Well,” says the little girl, “Daddy told me to stay downstairs while they went upstairs, but I followed them without Daddy seeing me, and I saw them hugging and kissing at the top of the stairs. Then they went into your bedroom and shut the door, but I went up and looked through the keyhole.” “Clever girl,” says Mummy, “What could you see through the keyhole?” “I saw them hugging and kissing some more, and then they started to take each other’s clothes off, and then the lady got on the bed and Daddy got on top of her.” “And then what happened?” asks Mummy. “They did what you and Uncle Jack did when Daddy was in Vancouver last year,” says the little girl.
My hamster died at the weekend. The vet said that he probably fell asleep at the wheel.
A man phones home from the office and tells his wife, “Something has just come up. I need to go fishing with the boss for the weekend, the man he was going with has cancelled. We have to leave right away, so can you pack my clothes, my fishing rods, tackle box and my blue silk pyjamas. I’ll be home in an hour to pick them up.” He hurries home, grabs everything, and rushes off. On Sunday night when he comes home his wife asks, “Did you have a good trip?” “Oh yes, great! I think I really impressed the boss. We caught a lot of fish but you forgot to pack my blue silk pyjamas.” His wife said “No I didn’t, I put them in your tackle box.”
A greedy old business man was dying, so he called his priest, his lawyer, and his accountant to his bedside. “They say you can’t take it with you, but I am certainly going to try” wheezed the business man. “When I die I want each of you to take one third of my money and throw it into my grave as they are burying me!” The three started to protest, but the business man stated “It’s my money and I will do what I want with it!”
The three reluctantly agree.
A few days later the man dies. At his funeral the priest, the lawyer, and the accountant do as directed and each throw in a bag of money into the grave just as the coffin is being buried. After the funeral, they start talking as they walk back to their cars. “I have a confession to make” says the priest. “When I thought of all the poor that could be helped by that man’s money, I decided to take a portion of it and donate it to the orphanage.”
As long as we are confessing” says the lawyer, “I need an oceanside vacation home, so I too took a handful of that geezer’s cash to use as a down payment.”
“Gentlemen, I am ashamed of both of you” replies the accountant. “I will have you know that I threw in a cheque for the full amount!”
