It’s Springtime!

T

he arrival of Easter coinciding with changing the clocks is a sure sign that Spring has arrived. Fortunately for everybody, residents and tourists, the microclimate we have in this Levante region was far better over the Easter period than in many other years.

The Junta de Andalucía and the Almería tourist board have been very persistent in attending tourist fairs in many countries with a professional approach. “The Daily Telegraph” newspaper extolled the virtues of Almería province with a long article on their on-line version of the publication recently. The “spaghetti western” history and present related attractions received a very good mention, along with the ‘Karst’ yeso mines at Sorbas and the Cabo de Gata area. The article praised the coastlines, tranquility and the gastronomy.

There are no major fiesta dates in the coming month, except for Saturday, May 1st (Day of the Worker) that is a full-blown “red” fiesta date when all official bodies will be shut.

Focus on Local News Boost For Almería The promotion company “Tourismo Andaluz”, part of the Junta de Andalucía Tourist Board, has managed to get a glowing report on Almería province published in the “Daily Telegraph” on-line edition. The “spaghetti western” film sites with reference to Clint Eastwood, Peter O’Toole and Harrison Ford get good coverage, as well as the Sorbas mines and Cabo de Gata National Park. The natural beauty of the area is praised and the typical food of the region. The “tranquil” coast line is also praised. It is hoped that tourists will come flocking in!

The 20 wind farms in Almería province contributed over 600 megawatts, enough to supply the energy needs of 200,000 homes, with a large reduction in CO2 emissions. With other “green” energy sources, Almería province has the capability to supply some 33% of the present demand.

More Mojácar Controversy The costly building of an underground car park for 30 vehicles near the church in Mojácar Pueblo was (and still is) very controversial, particularly as no car has yet been able to use it. The lift and stairway from near the medical centre to a very narrow street in the Pueblo has also not met with enthusiasm by all the residents as the building work completely closed the access road, except at Easter when it was re-opened for the event. The current proposal is that the Plaza Nueva square and viewing platform is demolished along with all the buildings underneath. The aim is to create 70 more parking places and move most of the town hall into a newly constructed building. It is true that several years ago a structural engineering report condemned the old catering school and the then offices of the police station as being dangerous, when everybody moved out. Opposition councillors consider that this is a waste of money and the 3 million euros could be better spent. They also say that the 18 months estimation of the time taken to complete the work will grossly affect residents and tourists. They consider that the vacant land in front, where a large development and car park was originally planned, should be utilized instead with an overhead walkway to the existing square, with space for as many as 300-400 cars.

Energy Savings The demand for energy for homes and businesses has gone down by 7% in Almería province in the last year. Apart from consumers trying to save money and being more careful with appliances, businesses too are using less energy. Demand from the hotel

Valle del Almanzora Motorhomes The councils of Alcóntar and Tíjola think that the motor home travellers are a tourist sector that should be encouraged. The mayor of Tíjola, Mario Padilla, says that their motor home site will be open by April. Alcóntar are following suit with their own area. Antonio Ramón, apart from being the Alcóntar mayor, is also president on the ‘Mancomunidad’ (association of local coucils). He considers that visits to the tourist attractions of the area can only be reinforced by these holiday makers. He says that these visitors buy fuel, provisions, visit local bars and restaurants and generate local income. He believes the conversion of an area into a suitable site only needs the basic facilities providing, and can be done with complete regard to the surrounding countryside.

Don’t Emigrate! Adriana Valverde is the provincial delegate in the Almería province for Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment. She recently made a plea aimed at young persons, including university graduates. She stated that before thinking of returning to their home country or going abroad to look for work, they should fully explore the possibilities of starting Continued ....

Focus on Local News a business here. There are 26 offices throughout Almería province known as “CADE” (Centros de Apoyo al Desarrollo Empresarial) dedicated to helping to start up a business. In 2012, some 950 new businesses started up after help and advice from these offices, and the total employment is over 1,000 people. Start ups included sectors such as agriculture, tourism, the restaurant & bar trade and commerce. The Spanish government have recently introduced many incentives for young persons starting up as self employed. In February however, the number of registered unemployed in Almería province just topped 80,000 people, the highest ever.

Minister, Luis de Guindos, has replied that these “suggestions” are noted, and may be considered in April when the 2014 Spanish fiscal plan is announced. The troika still thinks that lower band of 10% ‘IVA’ (VAT) rates should be higher than this latest increase. They also suggest that fuel taxes should be increased, and pension measures to increase the retirement age need to be done sooner than the rises in force now. The EU consider that their “strong” proposals are part of the bank rescue monetary package, and further reforms must be put in place as early as possible.

Turre Bankrupt! The mayor of Turre, Arturo Grima, announced at the beginning of March that the council did not have funds to pay the 48 municipal employees their wages for February. Previous payments have been late. The mayor blamed the former council for making expenditure on the basis of completely erroneous estimations of income. He cited the estimate of 150,000 euros from building licences that only came to 20,000 euros in reality, The receipts from ‘IBI’ (council tax) that netted 800,000 euros when the estimate was well over 1 million euros, fines made by the local police estimated at 20,000 euros when the actual amount was 2,000 euros, and opening licences for new businesses adjudged to be another 20,000 euros when the actual amount came to only 1,500 euros. He lamented the fact that the water bills in Turre had to be increased by 100% to generate income, and suggested that banks with outside bank machines may have to pay a tax, as is done in some other towns and villages, as every income helped. At the end of 2012, opposition councillors in Mojácar accused the mayoress of making similar inflated income predictions, not justifying the proposed expenditure for 2013.

Brussels Pressure Despite the economic reforms adopted by the Spanish government, the EU “troika” consisting of Brussels Economists and the Central European Bank, are still pressurizing Spain. They consider that there is still room for more finance regulations, needed to sustain growth and targets. The Spanish Economy

‘IKEA’ Doom & Gloom The magnate retailer ‘IKEA’ had to announce in late February that their meatball food sold in stores world wide was being withdrawn. Laboratory tests revealed a “minimal” amount of horse meat contamination. The item was withdrawn from all 17 outlets in Spain, as well as worldwide in 13 other countries. Only two weeks later their Stockholm headquarters announced that their “Almond & Chocolate Tart”; never on sale in Spain, was nevertheless being withdrawn from all other outlets. This followed the “Shanghai Daily” newspaper publishing the results of tests that they claim showed “unacceptable” levels of an intestinal bacteria. 1,800 tarts were destroyed by the Chinese customs who claimed the bacteria was of an “e-coli” strain. ‘IKEA’ spokespersons strongly disputed this, stating that the bacteria type was quite different and posed no threat to health, but the product was withdrawn “as a safety measure”. The tart is produced by the Swedish company ‘Almondy’. The food and drink sold at ‘IKEA’ accounts for nearly 5% of their overall sales

Focus on Local News continued and is an important source of income. In the last trading year, ‘IKEA’ generated 1.3 billion euros from these world wide sales. At the end of March, meatballs went back on the stores’ menus.

“Good” Roads Major roads in Spain of more than 25 kms in length where there have been no mortal accidents in the last 5 years are known as “tramos blancos” (white sections). The N-340a between Tabernas and Los Gallardos has this distinction in Almería province, and is a total of 34 kms in length. The ‘Mapfre’ insurance company has compiled a league table from statistics obtained from the Spanish traffic police. Altogether in Spain some 622 kms of roads have had no mortal accidents in the same period. Some 6% of this total apply to Andalucía.

Garages now have to show that they collect and dispose of all fluids drained from vehicles, and some parts removed, in the correct manner. Of the 45 workshops inspected in the latest batch some 12 of them lacked all the authorizations to trade in Albox, Roquetas, El Ejido, Berja, Zurgena, Turre and Tabernas. Another 10 were given fines for non-compliance of various regulations, whilst 30 were fined for not disposing correctly of the various potentially dangerous fluids and parts. Some 12 workshops were found to be secretly operating without any form of permission or licences whatsoever and will be shut down. The inspectors consider that any garages not licensed or “doing it on the cheap” are obtaining an unfair benefit in minimum overheads compared to fully legal premises.

Fines and Bills Town halls are often criticized for including a high estimate of income from fines. In 2012, Almería city issued a total of 5.3 million euros in fines, but only collected 1.79 million euros, just 34%. The finance department does not preclude more back fines being collected in 2013! The situation is much better with “IBI” (rates) demands. These came to 50.3 million euros in the same period and 40.6 million euros was collected in. Bills sent out for rubbush collection services came to 12.2 million euros with 8.7 million euros paid in. Building licences are not regularly requested nowadays and of the 1.1 million in taxes some 894,000 euros were collected. The estimate for 2012 was 1.2 million, so they got their sums right in this instance! In this Levante area in general, Carboneras has only managed to collect 41% of municipal taxes, with Bédar being the next worse at 48%. Los Gallardos has managed to collect 78%, but Mojácar has achieved 81% the highest in the region. It is considered that the non-Spanish population of over 50% in Mojácar, and a high proportion in other towns, probably pay their dues without too much delay!

‘Primark’ for Roquetas After long negotiations, a ‘Primark’ store will open at the Grand Plaza shopping centre in Roquetas. This will be the first of their outlets in Almería province. The 4,000 sq mt premises already have the “opening soon” posters up, although the actual opening is probably some months away. ‘Primark’ already have 30 stores in Spain since 2006, and in 2011 grossed 350 million euros here. The parent company is the Irish company “Associated British Food”. The Almería store is one of several planned for Spain in the next few years.

Focus on Local News continued of Arboleas, Cristóbal García, says that the problem has always been that they rely on two transmitters, one in Albox and the other in Zurgena. The coverage from both these sites is only a radius of 4 kms. It is planned that 70% of the population will receive coverage from the new system initially, with “tweaking” of the coverage eventually reaching 100%. Two new employees paid by the town hall will supervise the installation and maintenance.

At Last a Reduction! Prices for electricity will go down by 7% for 20 million users in Spain from April 1st. This is because the latest quarterly auction for the obtaining of fuels for the supply industry has gone down by 15%. The Spanish Consumer Organization (OCU) states that since 2008, electricity prices have gone up by 70%. During 2012, prices rose by 7% in April, 4% in July and fell by 2% in October, but the rise in IVA (VAT) negated this. After successful appeals by the supply companies in the courts, consumers have been paying the “back” rises from 2012 until now.

Cyprus Problems The Spanish Finance & Economy Minister, Luis de Guindos, has made an assurance in parliament that there is no need for Spain to seek further bail-out money from the EU. He also declared that the first 100,000 euros of money in a Spanish bank or other financial institution was “sacred”, and “guaranteed” not to be subject to any tax, similar to the one initially proposed for Cypriot account holders. This is a guarantee throughout the EU, and Cyprus refused to implement this instruction for the same reason, and did not tax any account of less than 100,000 euros as a result.

A Partial Victory The Spanish Supreme Tribunal has ruled that “in some cases” the mortgage interest rates that have a “floor” of typically 4% when the “Euribor” rate is now only half of 1% ( then plus bank interest rates) “may” be illegal. The right to challenge these fixed minimum interest rates will apply where mortgage holders consider that they were misled on this point, or the right to levy a minimum rate is hidden in the small print of the contract. This is a reversal of a previous ruling by a court in Seville in 2010 regarding mortgage terms from the banks “BBVA”, Cajamar” and Novacaixagalicia”. The pressure group “Ausbanc” dedicated to campaigning for consumers regarding banking conditions won their appeal.

New Speed Limits Draft proposals have been put forward to change various speed limits. The last government temporarily put the motorway and toll road speed limits down from120 kms/hr to110 kms/hr to save fuel when petrol and diesel prices hit a high. The new proposal is that on most motorways & toll roads the speed limit will be raised to130 kms/hr. This is because cars are now more efficient and motorways are the best roads to drive on, with only 17% of road deaths on motorways. The electronic signs on gantries would reduce speeds if there were tailbacks or bad weather. Other roads record the most deaths and accidents and on the majority of these roads the existing limit would be reduced from 100 kms/hr to 90 kms/hr, whilst on smaller roads with a limit of 80 kms/hr the speed limit would be reduced to 75 kms/hr. To safeguard pedestrians and cyclists the 50 kms/hr limit in cities and large towns would be reduced to 30 kms/hr. The existing limit for towed caravans of

On March 11th, the power was cut off at the municipal library, social services centre, woman’s advice centre and the ‘Guadalinfo’ internet centre. They then cut off the sports pavilion on March 12th. The previous week, the mayor of Albox, Rogelio Mena, who has recently taken office, announced that wages to council employees had to be a priority. He claims that ‘Endesa’ has not been helpful in trying to arrange a payment schedule to pay off the debt, but ‘Endesa’ state that Albox town hall was given every opportunity to attend meetings before the electricity was cut. The mayor then passed an emergency resolution authorizing the local police to arrest any person who tried to cut off more municipal properties! He gave “public security” as the reason. ‘Endesa’ then said this was unlawful and they had not cut off supplies at essential service areas such as health centres or the police, although they were entitled to. Eventually an agreement was reached to pay off the debt over several months

Spanish Evictions Ruled Illegal by EU The Rates Spy Plane In order to detect properties that are not listed on municipal registers and do not pay ‘IBI’ (rates tax), an “Observer P68” aircraft has been taking high resolution photographs in over 70 municipalities in Almería province. This includes municipalities who have their own rates or “catastral” offices, or rely on the Almería county council to send out information on rates due. Mojácar, Carboneras and Viator were amongst the first places to obtain these photographs that a computer programme turns into a 3D image, able to give the approximate height and overall dimensions of every property or business and GPS co-ordinates. Some 11,650 new or amended rates demands valued at 2.4 million euros have been made. In Mojácar. Some 1,300 such demands amount to 491,000 euros and were dealt with last year. On March 14th, the EU tribunal published their finding regarding a referral from a Barcelona judge relating to complaint made to them by a person who was evicted from his Spanish home in 2011. He claimed his mortgage terms were unfair and the interest rate of 18.75% was excessive. At present in Spain, no court is able to rule that mortgage terms are unfair in any eviction proceedings. The EU has ruled that this is “incomplete and insufficient” particularly where the mortgage relates to a main home. The ruling also states that courts must be empowered to halt eviction orders whilst the mortgage terms were being studied in each case. Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, Spain’s Justice Minister, promised the government’s readiness to amend the current legislation, but left open how far the changes would go. “All the aspects that were declared contrary to the law will be corrected,” he said. The government has already published a plan to ease the plight of over-indebted homeowners, but campaigners said the proposed changes did not go far enough, and have hailed the EU ruling as a “breakthrough”.

So Now You Know... Cruise Ships The cruise of the “Augusta Victoria” in the Mediterranean and the Near East from 22 January to 22 March, 1891, with 241 passengers, is often stated to have been the first ever cruise. The first vessel built exclusively for this purpose was the “Prinzessin Victoria Luise” of Germany, designed by Albert Ballin, general manager of Hamburg-America Line. The ship was completed in 1900. The practice of cruising grew gradually out of the tradition of transatlantic crossings which never took less than two to four weeks. The cruise industry had a boost in the 1980s when a large number of passenger liners were launched, many capable of carrying 2,000 people, now “small” by today’s standards. Mirrors The history of mirrors dates back to ancient times when mankind first saw reflections in a pond or river and considered it magic. Polished stone or metal was used in the first early man-made mirrors. Examples of obsidian mirrors found in Turkey date from 6000BC. Mirrors made by coating flat glass with silver or gold foil date from Roman times. Later on, glass was used in combination with metals like tin, mercury and lead, to create mirrors. The twoway mirror was originally called the "transparent mirror". The first US patent was given to Emil Bloch, a Russian émigré, in 1903. Police soon used these mirrors to covertly observe interviews with suspected criminals. Compact Discs The CD was unveiled to the world in March 1979, and the first compact disc was produced in a factory in Germany after years of development by Philips and Sony. In 1970, Philips began work on what was called the “ALP” (audio long play), an audio disc system to rival vinyl records, but using laser technology on one side only. The aim was to put one hour of music on the new sized disc. Many names were discussed and considered included “Mini Rack”, “MiniDisc”, and “Compact Rack”. They settled on “Compact Disc” to remind people of the success of their “Compact Cassette”. CDs initially cost twice as much as vinyl records. The first CD player was over 1,000 pounds sterling in today’s money!

Thermometers Several inventors invented a “thermoscope” at the same time. In 1593, Galileo Galilei invented a rudimentary water thermometer that allowed temperature variations to be measured. Different closed bulbs rose and fell with flags detailing the readings. The first modern thermometer, the mercury thermometer with a standardized scale, was invented by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit in 1714. The Fahrenheit scale divided the freezing and boiling points of water into 180 degrees. In 1742, the Celsius scale was invented by Swedish Astronomer Anders Celsius. The term "Celsius" was adopted in 1948 by an international conference on weights and measures. Curling Tongs A curling iron is a tool, a cylindrical metal appliance, used to change the structure of the hair by applying heat to a lock of hair that has been curled around it. Powered by electricity now, the curling iron goes way back before the introduction of electricity. In classical Greece it is known that the upper classes used curling irons heated on a fire. In 1866, Hiram Maxim who designed the machine gun bearing his name, applied for and obtained the first of many patents at age 26 for a hair-curling iron. Four years later in 1890 two Frenchmen, Maurice Lentheric and Marcel Grateau, used heated electric curling tongs to make deep, long-lasting “Marcel” waves. Magazines The English word “magazine” came from a military “storehouse” of war material. The term magazine was coined for this use by Edward Cave, editor of “The Gentleman's Magazine” in 1731. Mediterranean Diet Boost

T

he Mediterranean diet, the traditional diet and food preparation in Spain, has always been hailed as being very healthy. This has now been conclusively proved after a ten year trial. “The New England Journal of Medicine” has published the findings that reflect a 30% less chance of major illnesses and a 50% less chance of serious heart problems or brain hemorrhages. This assumes that the Mediterranean diet is supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts. The investigations were coordinated by the Spanish University of Navarra and some 200 food and health scientists throughout Spain, Greece and Italy started a serious study in 2003. ‘UNESCO’ included the Mediterranean diet some two years ago in their list of “cultural heritages”, that should not be allowed to die out. The investigators knew from previous statistics that whilst the prevalence of heart related diseases was 5% in the US, it was less then 1% in the Mediterranean countries.

The Mediterranean diet known in Spain as “DM” (Dieta Mediterránea) is considered to be made up of traditional components such as bread and cereal products (rich in carbohydrates), fresh vegetables including un-cooked tomatoes and avocados, fresh fruit products “in season” with the minimum of processing or alteration, and the use of olive oil instead of animal fats. Cheese, yoghurt, eggs, red wine in moderation, poultry, rabbit, a very small amount of red meat, and oily fish at least twice a week, make up this ideal diet. Interestingly, horse meat; sold as such and purchased for eating in significant amounts in Spain, is sweet and juicy, very low in grease, contains Omega 3, and is rich in proteins and iron! Nuts such as “avellanas” (hazel nuts) are very low in calories, with a high content of antioxidant vitamins “C, E, A, B1, B6 & B9” and also contain significant amounts of copper, zinc, magnesium and iron. Industrial processing into pastes, purees or crushing does not diminish the benefits. Nuts are also no problem for those who have to eat a “gluten free” diet. Ascorbic acids are also reduced by eating nut based products. Nuts with a sugar coating such as sugared almonds are less beneficial!

Genetically modified food products have never had a good reception by consumers, but “natural” manipulation is now coming on in leaps and bounds. The same company has discovered that microbiological additions of “Clorella” and “Spirulina” bacteria strains to biscuits help greatly to stimulate the immune system. Seville University has perfected a computer imaging technique that tells growers exactly when grapes are at their peak for harvesting.

Milan have perfected a “microwave” method of easily weeding out hen’s eggs that are not properly formed. A new treatment for basic rice can provide 60% of the daily amounts of Vitamin “A”, with enormous potential for countries (particularly “poor” ones) where rice is a large part of the daily diet. María Carmen Villarán, one of the leading food scientists at ‘Tecnalia’, understands that modern day families rely much more on pre-packed foods as they have less time to prepare food from scratch. She believes that the technology available will help the Mediterranean diet to be easier to use in practice, on a general basis.

The “CSIC” Spanish Centre for Food Research has been using special packs for mushrooms that contain treated air, greatly prolonging their “use by” times. Cheese production companies can now take advantage of a treatment process that not only reduces the salt and saturated milk fats, but in addition adds vegetable fat enriched with Omega 3 & 6. The taste and texture is said to be completely the same. Barley added to the food given to pigs used for ham production reduces the fat content dramatically, and is very cost effective. “Café Fortaleza” has started using a genetic molecule test that shows if the coffee they buy is not 100% pure Arabica beans. Meanwhile scientists in Madrid and

Dementia: Signs & Treatment

D

ementia (“demencia” in Spanish) is, put simply, a degenerative brain disease, usually associated with age. In highly developed countries such as Spain, health professionals can supply full diagnostic services, treatment and essential advice. The disease is at present incurable, but an early diagnosis can slow it down in most cases. Two thirds of the persons who have been diagnosed as suffering from dementia are over 80 years of age, but the onset can be seen in other ages, normally at least 65 years. “Vascular dementia” is associated with cerebral hemorrhages and those with hypertension or smokers often experience the onset sooner than others. “Dementia with Lewy bodies” (DLB) is one of the most common types of progressive dementia with pronounced “fluctuations” in alertness and attention, recurrent visual hallucinations, and “Parkinson” symptoms, such as rigidity and the loss of spontaneous movement. Lewy bodies are accumulated bits of alpha-synuclein protein inside the nuclei of neurons in areas of the brain that control particular aspects of memory and motor control. “Alzheimer” is a most common variation of dementia, with often severe loss of memory and reasoning and behaviour problems. Expert diagnosis is required to ascertain exactly what the problems exhibited relate to. Some 75% of sufferers may not be diagnosed as sufferers at all. A common misconception is that the elderly relative or friend is suffering from “old age” or just being “cranky”. Cruces Carmona, a psychologist at a specialist ‘Sanitas’ centre, suggests that relatives who notice changes in personality or behaviour should keep a diary so that different problems can be written down and taken (to start with) to a doctor. Questions such as “how many children do you have?”, or “do you remember what we did yesterday /your last birthday/Christmas?” may give valuable insight. A blood test, physical examination and review of any drugs being taken are the first requisites. A specialist in the disease

is the next port of call and a brain “IRM” scan is usually done or a “TAC” scan. Fortunately, Spanish hospitals are not short of specialist scanning equipment. Drugs may be prescribed but activities that require brain function are an important tool. Listening to classical music or ballad type music helps the brain to process the auditory sensations. Playing a game of cards or doing jig-saws are also beneficial. Playing a musical instrument also provides the brain with a different challenge. Painting is a good therapy as well, and some experts ask the patient to paint the various seasons, to demonstrate their memory and awareness of the present time of year.

General advice is to try not to vary routines, treat memory loss or strange behaviour gently, without getting cross. One symptom is that the sufferer may believe that their view is the only correct one and that all other family members are wrong! This is also a feature of a person suffering from Bi-polar disorder in a “high” phase. Unfortunately, there may become a time when care in the home, even with help, is no longer an option. Advice from the experts is that in conjunction with your doctor or specialist it may well be for the good of the sufferer if they are put in a specialist nursing home. Social interaction and the 24hr care available are very valid reasons for a family to recognize that this is the “best” continuing treatment. “Drop in” centres where the sufferer can be looked after for a few hours, like the one recently set up in Turre, are often invaluable for both the sufferer and any family member.

What’s On Extravaganza “Antología de la Zarzuela” Anthology of the Zarzuela (the palace in Madrid) is an extravaganza show that comes to Teatro Auditorio, Roquetas, on Saturday, April 20th at 9.30pm. 100 artistes with 1,500 costumes are joined by a 40 piece orchestra with 8 soloists and a choir of 32. 24 dancers complete the line-up. Tickets are 20, 22 & 25 euros.

Julio Iglesias finishes his Spanish tour at Roquetas bullring on July 13th. “Golden VIP” tickets cost 295 euros, with other front of stage tickets at 150,120 & 85 euros. Standing area tickets are 50 & 80 euros, and 150 in the balcony seats. Some websites show much more expensive seats. What’s On Exhibitions “Minotauromaquia” is an exhibition of bull-fighting related works from the painter Andrés García Ibáñez. The 30 paintings can be seen at El Teatro Villa in HuércalOvera until April 21st. A couple of women were playing golf one sunny Saturday morning. The first of the twosome teedoff and watched in horror as the ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole. Indeed, the ball hit one of the men and he immediately clasped his hands together at his crotch, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony. The woman rushed down to the man and immediately began to apologize. "Please allow me to help, I'm a physiotherapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you'd just allow me!" she told him earnestly. "Ummph, oooh, nnooo, I'll be alright. I'll be fine in a few minutes," he replied as he remained in the fetal position, still clasping his hands together at his crotch. The woman takes it upon herself to begin to "ease his pain" and begins to massage his groin. After a few moments she asked, "Does that feel better?" The man looked up at her and replied, "Well, that does feel pretty good, but my thumb still hurts like hell!"

A woman comes home and tells her husband, "Remember those headaches I've been having all these years? Well, they're gone." "No more headaches? How?" His wife replies, "Margie referred me to a hypnotist. He goes into the bathroom and comes back a few minutes later, jumps into bed, and makes passionate love to his wife like never before. His wife says, "Wow! That was wonderful!" The husband says, "Don't move! I'll be right back." He returns to the bathroom and then goes back to the bedroom, and round two is even better than the first time. The wife sits up and her head is spinning. Her husband again says, "Don't move, I'll be right back." With that, he goes back into the bathroom. The following Saturday rolls around, and George says that he will be there, but he may be six minutes late again. He shows up right on time, golfs lefthanded, and again wins the round. This continues for the next few weeks, with George always saying that he may be six minutes late, and then always winning the round golfing either leftor right-handed. The other employees were getting tired of this, and decided to ask him what the deal was. They said, "George, every Saturday you say you may be six minutes late. You never are. Then you show up and golf either right-handed or lefthanded, and always win. What is up with that?" "Well, I am a very superstitious kind of guy," George replied. "Every Saturday when I wake up, I look over at my wife. If she is sleeping on her left side, I golf left-handed. If she is sleeping on her right side, I golf right-handed. It gives me good luck, and because of that I usually win." "OK," one of the employees questioned. "But what happens if your wife is laying on her back?" "In that case," George says, "I am six minutes late."

After escaping from her overly controlling husband for the evening, Jennifer sneaked off to visit a fortune teller of some local repute. In a dark and hazy room, peering into a crystal ball, the mystic delivered grave news. "There's no easy way to say this, so I'll just be blunt: Prepare yourself to be a widow. Your husband will die a violent and horrible death this year." Then the soothsayer looked up and locked eyes with Jennifer, who was visibly shaken at the news. Jennifer stared back at the woman's lined face, then at the single flickering candle, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself. She simply had to know. She looked back, deep into the fortune teller's gaze, steadied her voice, and asked her question: "Will I be acquitted?" The Miracle Of Birth An old country doctor went way out to the boondocks to deliver a baby. It was so far out there was no electricity. When the doctor arrived, no one was home except for the labouring mother and her 5-year-old child. The doctor instructed the child to hold a lantern high so he could see while he helped the woman deliver the baby. The child did so. The mother pushed and after a little while, the doctor lifted the newborn baby by the feet and spanked him on the bottom to get him to take his first breath. The doctor then asked the 5-year-old what he thought of what he had just witnessed. "He shouldn't have crawled in there in the first place," the little boy said. "Spank him again."
