Summer is Coming

t least flights are back to normal again and some tourists are sampling this part of Spain, particularly an influx of cruise ship passengers into Almería port. And the sun seems to have returned! Cultural departments and town halls are busy trying to see what budgets they have for the summer concerts, and liaising with agents to see who they can get. Reports are, that whilst the credit crunch is affecting budgets, performers are also reducing their fees slightly.

Sorbas, Turre, El Ejido, Tabernas Tíjola. The Anand Easter Procession celebrations on this day usually consist of a “Romeria”, that is a procession with decorated farm vehicles, lorries and carts that set off into the country. Once there, food and drink is consumed, and a religious event may well take place. Mojácar enjoys this fiesta day in particular. Tíjola combines this day with a gypsy event with decorated horses.

The 2010 ‘Creamfields’ Music Festival will take place from the afternoon of August 14th, until dawn the next day at Guardias Viejas Beach in El Ejido. An initial line-up is published (see local news). Here in Spain, the month of May means just one thing for about 250,000 Roman Catholic children. They attend mass and take their First Communion (Primera Comunión). As this is of great significance for both the children and families, it has grown into a major event that can cost a comparative fortune. Initially, there are new clothes for the families and guests, with the highlight being the girls dressed almost as brides and the boys as young men in sailor suits. A photographer is essential, and after the church ceremony it is traditional that everyone goes to a hotel or restaurant, where the bill, with more photos and perhaps entertainment can reach 3000 euros for a fairly lavish event. This year, like last year, hotels are reporting that fewer guests are being invited (particularly the ones who may have to travel long distances and need hotel accommodation), and menus and prices are being heavily scrutinized.

In many places, the celebrations continue into the night with dances, concerts, and festivities in the local squares or “plazas”. Some districts keep the religious events for the following Sunday. This year however, Sunday April 16th is Ascension Day. Christians believe that Jesus Christ stayed on earth for 40 days after his resurrection on Easter Sunday, so officially Ascension Day, when he went to Heaven, is always a Thursday, but now celebrated the following Sunday. In 2010 it is May13th, carried forward to the 16th. Focus on Local News Pollen Problems The Andalucían College of Opticians has issued guidelines for those users of contact lenses who are affected by seasonal “hay fever”, from pollen. The spring of 2010 is considered to be a high pollen time, after the winter rains. Their advice is that contact lens use is restricted as much as possible if irritation is caused to the eye by pollen. This is because pollen particles can become trapped between the lens and the eye. Frequent washing of contact lenses using the correct cleaning solutions should help, together with washing the eyes particularly before going to sleep. The other recommendation is that contact lenses made of silicon gel allow more air movement between the lens and the eye. Silicon lenses that are only intended to be used for one day are also beneficial during periods of high pollen irritation.

Zoreda, states that on top of this direct loss, there are losses to the tourist industry in general through travellers not arriving and occupying hotel rooms, as well as losses to the restaurant and retail trade. He is appealing to central Spanish government to provide grants to offset these losses, and also delay the planned rise in IVA (IVA) that comes into force on July 1st.

Zurgena Corruption In one part of the corruption cases involving Zurgena, the public prosecutor has asked for a prison sentence of 8 months and a restriction of 7 years against holding public office. This applies to the mayor of Zurgena, Cándido Trabalón, and Urban councillor Manuel Tijeras along with 8 other council members who passed a licence for the building of 5 houses in El Cucador in 2006. The builder, José Torrecillas Cortés, who ran ‘Construcciones Torres y Gil CB’ and technical director José María Urrea Mira face a prison sentence of 2 years with compensation to the house owners if the case is proved. Other allegations, about 10 in total, concerning other developments and builders, have yet to be heard. Tourist Package A promotion will start in May whereby tourists from Almería can travel to Seville by air, spend 2 nights in a 4 star hotel in Seville, and pay 165 euros per person. Travellers from Seville to Almería enjoy the same benefits for 155 euros. This package has been designed to offer an inclusive price, and take advantage of the new air link between Almería and Seville. The package in Almería is being coordinated by ‘Viajes Cemo’ and the Central Reservations Office. Wind Spirit

Cruise Ships 5,800 passengers arrived at Almería port on cruise ships between April 23rd and May 6th. The first ship to arrive was the ‘Boudicca’ with 750 passengers, mostly from the UK. This was followed by the ‘Westerdam’ cruise ship from the US company ‘Holland America Line’ who brought 1,800 passengers. These vessels were followed by the ‘Island Scape’ and the ‘Thomson Destiny’ who carried 3,500 passengers between them. Almería port also received 140 passengers from the sailship ‘Wind Spirit’ who were cruising from Málaga to Cartegena. The Almería Port Authority and tourist offices state that this is a particularly good start to the season. Apart from major improvements to the port, the Almería authorities have attended several important cruise events as part of a campaign by the Andalucían authorities to promote cruise ship tourism. Focus on Local News continued Gas Delay ‘Medgaz’, the company in charge of bringing natural gas to Almería from Algeria have announced that the date for achieving this has been put back slightly until July. Hotel Boss Questioned José María Rossell, a well known Hotel proprietor in Andalucía and Almería province, has been questioned in Lanzarote by a judge investigating alleged scandals in the area. José Rossell controls the ‘Playa Senator’ chain of hotels including the Hotel Playadulce. Altogether the chain comprises 28 hotels throughout Andalucía, Madrid, Catalunia and the Canary Islands. The group also own the western theme park and zoo ‘Oasys Park’. In 2005, a partly built 5 star hotel was paralyzed by a court in Lanzarote who stated that the building licence was not valid. The headquarters of the group is in Roquetas de Mar. José Rossell has another hotel in Lanzarote, the Hotel Playa Verde, and a project for a further hotel. He has close links with the PIL Independent Political party in Lanzarote, who appear to be the focus of the present investigation.

Architects Prize Eduardo Simarro is the architect in charge of the design of the new 90,000 m2 ‘Carrida’ commercial centre to be built in Almería city. His design has been awarded first prize at the prestigious and 10th ‘Quatrium’ Architectural Awards, in the category of commercial centres. As yet no work has started on the site and current plans are that earth movements start in 2011, with the centre due to be completed in 2013. The award to the architect and the ‘Carrida’ Group will be made in Barcelona on June 3rd. The ‘Quatrium’ awards attract many entries each year and include prizes for best designs of hotels, hospitals and rehabilitation centres.

Marine Biology Finds at Viator

COPO & Carrefour

Marine biologists working in Almería province have discovered the fossil remains of a type of sea worm that is believed to have lived on the nutrients from bones, including those of whales. Investigations started at the military base at Viator in 2006, when the fossilized remains of a whale were found. Scientific studies from bone samples taken at the time and further excavation has confirmed the existence of these bone eating worms, believed to date from 5 million years ago, and given the general name of ‘Oseadax’. To find fossil remains of worms is very difficult. In the case of those found at Viator is has been concluded that after eating bone material the worms ejected the bits they didn’t want through a series of small tubes. These tubes then filled with sediment, and this enabled the dead worm to become fossilized.

In 1999, the ‘COPO’ hypermarket in El Ejido entered into a contract with ‘Carrefour’ for the sale of the hypermarket. The sale never went through and various court actions were commenced either to have the contract set aside, or implemented. As a result of an appeal to the supreme tribunal, ‘COPO’ have been ordered to honour the original contract. The hypermarket employs 180 people and the turnover in 2008 amounted to 28 million euros. Neither Carrefour nor COPO wished to comment on the latest court judgement, and both parties stated that they were in continued negotiations.

Creamfields 2010

Turre Says No! Turre council have passed a regulation that prohibits the growing of genetically modified crops in their municipality. The aim of the ban is to increase the production of ecological produce and growing by traditional methods. At present there are no genetically modified crops being grown in the Turre area, but ‘Greenpeace’ asked the Turre council to consider this regulation as part of their campaign against genetic crops. Mercadona Expansion

The supermarket chain ‘Mercadona’ recently opened two more stores in Olula del Río and Cruz de Caravaca in Almería city. This brings the total number of stores to 29. The total number of employees now stands at 1,100 people who are all on fixed contracts. Mercadona has also purchased produce from local suppliers to the value of 80 million euros. Their policy of purchasing local produce is designed both to stimulate the local Danone, Actimel and Activia industry, as well as cutting down on transport and The yoghurt and milk goods manufacturer ‘Danone’ distribution costs. Focus on Local News continued New Mojácar Cancer Awareness Group A new cancer awareness and support group has been formed in Mojácar, allied to the cancer awareness group in Almería. In October, a campaign will feature breast cancer detection followed by child cancer during December and cancer caused by tobacco products in March 2011.

Historic Exhumation Order The Junta de Andalucía and the Almería City Council have authorized the excavation of a communal grave at the San José cemetery in Almería city. It is believed that within this grave are the remains of Martín Márquez, the last republican mayor of Cuevas del Almanzora. The authorization follows six years of investigation on behalf of the two granddaughters, Ana María and Manuela Márquez. Their father, now in his seventies, has never known where his own father was buried after being shot during the civil war in 1939. An original search of records in Almería city revealed no mention of Martín Márquez, but it was later discovered that his name had been incorrectly recorded. Various city dignitaries went with the granddaughters to the San José ceremony on receipt of the permission to open the supposed mass grave, including the Almería politician Martín Soler who is related by marriage to the family. This exhumation order relating to a victim of the civil war, is the first such order to be granted in Almería province. 1,167 civilians, not engaged in actual fighting, are stated to have been killed or executed in Almería province. These include 8 people who were convicted of distributing information they had obtained by listening to the BBC World Service. Huéral-Overa Hospital The Health Councillor, María Jesús Montero, recently visited the Huércal-Overa Hospital to inspect the new digital X-ray and diagnostic centre along with a new automated sample analysis installation. Rambla Work Many large towns in Almería province have running through them a “rambla”, that is a riverbed, quite often without water. In times of heavy rain however, they are transformed. The Environmental Agency of the Junta de Andalucía is carrying out major work on ramblas in Almería City, Albox, Roquetas de Mar, Adra, El Ejido and Macael. The projects have a budget of 60 million euros. The work being carried out is to improve the areas so that minimum damage is done to the surrounding areas and properties in the event of heavy rains, and also provide areas where the inhabitants can undertake leisure activities. Garden areas and walkways are being incorporated where possible. Power Cut Complaints Meetings are being held between the municipalities of Alcóntar, Serón, Tíjola, Armuña and Lúcar, part of the ‘Alto Almanzora’ area and Sevillana Endesa, the electricity supply company. This follows from the power cuts in late January where 7,000 households were without electricity for up to 3 days. The municipalities claim that whilst this power cut was the worst, this is by no means the only time power has been lost. It is agreed that the main problem is regarding the overhead pylons. Andalucía Tourists

The Andalucían Council for Universities has announced that Almería, along with Jaen and Huelva is to have a new faculty for medicine, together with degree courses for those wishing to become medical professionals. Almería has been campaigning for many years to have such a facility at the university. Health authorities consider that there is at present a shortage of qualified staff to cope with population increase. Also, between 2015 & 2025, it is estimated that 35% of the current doctors will reach retirement age. Other degree courses will be made available including Bio-technology, Renewable Energy and Energy Engineering.

Figures available before the problem with flights due to the volcanic ash problem revealed that non Spanish tourism had increased by 7%, compared with the same period in 2009. Tourists from Germany, France and Italy contributed to the increase, as well as the Easter celebrations. Nearly 2 million tourists came from the UK, although this figure was not seen as anything special. 80% of the non Spanish tourists came by air, with all airports, including Almería, increasing their number of flights and destinations. 14 companies are now flying from Almería to 22 destinations in 11 countries. Flights during March brought in 74,000 passengers - an increase of 25% compared with 2009.

New Faculty of Medicine for Almería University

Market Problems for Airport The Spanish Aviation Authority (Aena) has made a formal complaint to Almería City Council regarding rubbish that is left after the El Alquián Sunday market. The airport authority complain that the clearing of rubbish left after the market is not sufficient and items blow onto the airport area including runways. Airport staff often have to clear this rubbish themselves, but the main complaint is that the rubbish is a hazard to aircraft. Meetings are being held between the various bodies to try and resolve this problem. The market site often experiences high winds that take rubbish from the market onto adjoining land. Mojácar Parador

Wind Power Projects The Junta de Andalucía has published applications from ‘Capital Energy Andalucía S.L.U.’ for the installation of wind farms in Tíjola, Lúcar and Serón. The company wish to install 23 wind turbines in the Arce and Parrancas areas of Tíjola, each costing about 30 million euros, with a potential electricity yield of 70 Mw. The park in Lúcar at El Espilo would have 14 wind turbines and the park in Serón, at La Colina, would have another 9. There are 17 wind farms operating at present in Almería

A judge in Huércal-Overa is to start initial court proceedings against Osvaldo Ceferino Martínez, who is accused of building 4 houses in La Molata in 2003 where he knew there was no authorization, no licences and on land that was not designated as building land. A 5th dwelling had a licence for modifications only. The properties were sold to mostly UK purchasers, who never had water or electricity connected, and denounced the builder in 2007 on legal advice. The judge can order that the houses are demolished if he chooses to do so, but compensation would then be awarded to the occupiers, as requested by the prosecutors. A prison term for the builder of 2 years has also been requested if the case is proved.

Focus on Local News continued Green Way Opened The 12 kilometres stretch of country walk and bicycle way in Serón has now been opened. This “green way” was formerly part of the Lorca-Baza-Guadix railway line that last saw a train in 1984. The conversion work has included the alteration of 6 metal bridges to allow walkers and cyclists to use them, an underpass section under the A-334 road of 42 metres and a rest area at the Serón station equipped with parking for cycles, benches and tables. Trees and shrubs have been planted at various parts of the route, together with information and signposting. The work has cost 640,000 euros and has been carried out as part of a national plan to stimulate rural tourism and preserve areas of historic interest that have fallen into disuse. EU & Junta Grants for Pellet Burners The EU and Junta de Andalucía grants are still available to offset costs of converting inefficient open fireplaces to take state of the art pellet burning stoves. These stoves are very efficient with quick response time and very low running costs. The pellets are clean and the

fine ash residue can be put on gardens. If you have a Spanish residencia, either the old plastic card type, or the new green certificate, and are registered on the padron (official register of residents at your town hall) you are eligible for the grants that can be as much as 1,500 euros. Even people in rental properties can apply. Installers can offer advice on the best appliance for your property and arrange a home visit to ascertain the most suitable models. There are often easy payment plans available for purchase and installing one of the pellet stoves now means you are ready for the winter season. Huércal-Overa Pool Complex Open Residents of Huércal-Overa have flocked to the new indoor swimming pools and fitness centre that has opened. The complex has 2 pools, the largest being 25 by 12 metres, a spa area, rehabilitation pool, gymnasium and indoor cycling facilities. The project has cost 7.6 million euros, funded by the Junta de Andalucía, the local council and other bodies. The total complex is just over 2,500 m2.

So Now You Know... North Poles If you set off looking for the North Pole you need to go to the Artic Ocean, but then you have several choices. Magnetic North is where your compass will direct you. It is in fact moving from Canada towards Russia about 40 kilometres a year. The geographic north is where the axis of the earth’s rotation meets the surface. This point is said to be “True north”. The geomagnetic North Pole is where the earth’s magnetic dipole meets the surface, about 11 degrees away from the axis of rotation. Finally, if you find the spot furthest from any coastline, this is known as the Artic North Pole. So you have quite a choice of places to visit. Jumper A jumper is now accepted as an upper-body garment, probably made of wool, for either sex, although in the US it is usually just used for an item of women’s clothes. The word comes from the French word “juppe” which was really a petticoat. A jumper was also used to describe a canvas jacket worn by sailors. In England, it was used to describe a short man’s jacket or a petticoat or other garment to give extra warmth. Gradually the word changed from including undergarments for women and jackets for men, and became used exclusively for a knitted or machine made garment worn over other clothes. Thanksgiving Days America and Canada celebrate Thanksgiving Days, associated with large family gatherings and lots of food including turkeys and pumpkin pie. The idea is to give thanks for the food the land supplies. In America, there were various dates but in 1941 it became the 4th Thursday in November. Meanwhile in Canada, various dates had been tried as well, but in 1957 it was decided that their Thanksgiving Day was the 2nd Monday in October, when Americans are usually thinking about celebrations for Columbus Day! Benjamin Franklin wanted a turkey, not a bald-headed eagle to be the National bird of America.

The Bank of England, founded by a Scotsman The first Governer of the Bank of England was Sir John Houblon, a Huguenot descendant. A Scotsman, was however the man who started the idea and got a Royal Charter in 1694. Patterson decided that the government needed some funds, so he persuaded 1,200 people to raise 1.2 million pounds in just under a fortnight. They were all promised 8% interest and became shareholders. The Bank of England went on to assume more power, issuing currency and managing gold stocks. The Bank then took responsibility for financial and money stability and became a main adviser to the governments of the day. Golden Hamsters It does appear that all Golden Hamsters are descended from a mother hamster captured in the wild with a litter of baby hamsters. George Waterhouse of the London Zoological Society correctly identified a golden hamster as a different breed in 1839. Israel Aharoni discovered a mother hamster with a litter in 1930, but the mother was killed. He managed to raise some of the litter and they eventually were imported into England and became household pets. All pet golden hamsters certainly derive from this litter, although a few wild pairs still exist in Syria.

Skid Row Skid Row is a term we use when someone has reached the bottom and they are experiencing failure and desolation. It is also applied to the poorest parts of towns, particularly in the US. The phrase comes from the logging industry where chopped logs rolled or skidded over another set of logs in the logging yards. Vast numbers of loggers drank as hard as they worked. If they succumbed to drink or other vices it became known as being on skid row. The phrase them became used for anyone who had â€œskidded offâ€? their normal life, or were very poor and often degraded, usually associated with alcohol abuse.

The AVE Comes of Age

he work to bring the AVE (Alta Velocidad Española) High Speed train from Murcía to Almería continues to take shape. Some sections are fully licensed and major work is taking place, other sections are about to be licensed, whilst some sections are still awaiting technical geological testing. There are a few areas where the exact route is still subject to finalization. Despite this, the AVE has come of age. The first route from Madrid to Seville is now 18 years old, as it commenced operation on April 21st, 1992. More than 50 million passengers have used this train since it came into service, and it has accounted for 84% of the travellers between the two cities. The punctuality has been an average of 99% for each year of operation. Passengers using the AVE for work travel has gone up from 36% in 1992 to 61%, and the 40% of other travellers use the service at least once every two weeks. Since the Seville connection, the AVE now travels from Madrid to Barcelona, Valladolid, Córdoba and Málaga. If everything goes according to plan, the AVE from Madrid to Valencia will be open by the end of 2011. The next stage of the AVE from Almería to Granada is one of the most complex because of the terrain, and is likely to cost 2,200 million euros. Plans have been published however, with various routes proposed.

In the Spanish budgets for 2010, 71% of the budget of nearly 9,000 million euros for roads and railways is for rail projects. One of the key aims for the new AVE projects is that during night hours goods are carried. At present, only 2.3% of

goods destined for the EU go by rail, whilst 55% still go by road and 43 % by ship. The companies that build the new infrastructure for the AVE are being encouraged to finance part of the project themselves, in return for a maintenance contract for 25 years.

The Almería to Murcia line will have 108 kms in Almería province and 80 kms in Murcia province. The main sections where work is taking place in Almería province are from Los Arenas to Barranco de los Gafarillos, then to Sorbas and Los Gallardos and then to Vera. These are sections 4 to7 of the 9 sections from Almería city to Lorca. Soon, the largest tunneling machine in Spain, (used for the Córdoba and Málaga lines), will arrive to start the tunneling. The size of the machine means that it will be transported in sections and be rebuilt where the first of the tunnels is needed. It will take nearly two months to build the machine on site. In April, another 14 kms of the AVE line was licensed between Lorca and Almendricos at a cost of 1.5 million euros. In Almería City, all the paperwork will be signed on May 7th that will lead to the underground work and new station. There is also a provision for a link to Almería port. The first project for the underground stretch was published in 1998, followed by many other amendments, modifications and budgets. The present cost is 244 million euros. This project is intertwined with the arrival of the AVE in Almería City. It is all coming together!

Fire Treatment

hose of us who were here last summer will well remember the fierce fires that led to massive evacuation, particularly in the coastal region. What will have struck us is the number of helicopters, mostly with buckets to extract water from the sea, golf course lakes and elsewhere, and the number of people drafted in to help. Apart from army contingents, we will remember the convoys of ‘Junta de Andalucía’ vehicles of all descriptions, the control areas set up, and the police and red- cross vehicles that helped evacuate residents and holiday makers. Ash and ’Flu

Airlines were shut down by National and International bodies who decided that a zerotolerance approach to volcanic ash was advisable. Probably most air passengers, including the ones Santa Justa station at Seville who were stuck, would agree with the principle that safety was the first consideration. Just a year ago, the whole world faced a situation where they were advised of the possibility of a major pandemic, “A” type ‘flu. The World Health Organization issued their first warnings on April 24th, 2009. By June 11th, the “threat” level had been raised to the maximum. The panic over the H1N1 ‘flu originated in Mexico, where on the day of the first alert there were considered to be 800 people affected. It is now believed that 17,853 people died from the new ‘flu, spread between 214 countries. Almería province reported cases well below the Spanish National average.

Health officials in Spain and other countries consider that they did the right thing, according to the best current advice. José Martínez Olmos, Spanish Secretary General for Health, is convinced that Spain took a prudent view based on advice not just from the World Health Organization, but also the EU. His opinion is that if there was another pandemic threat we would have to do the same again. This seems right, whether it applies to ash or ‘flu!

Circus Performances The ‘Horror Circus’ comes to Almería city on May 21st, 22nd and 23rd at the Maestro Padilla Auditorium. The show is called “Pshychosis” and is set in a cemetery in the 1800s. The circus company won a National circus prize in 2003. Performances take place at 9pm May 21st, 6.30pm and 10pm May 22nd and 5pm on May 23rd. The Masterpiece

An 8-year-old girl went to her dad, who was working in the yard and asked him, "Daddy, what is sex?"

Some time ago, there was this artist, who worked from a studio in his home. He specialized in nudes, and had been working on what he thought would be a masterpiece for several months now.

The father was surprised that she would ask such a question, but decided that if she's old enough to know to ask the question, then she's old enough to get a straight answer. Steeling himself to leave nothing out, he proceeded to tell her all about human reproduction and the joys and responsibilities of intercourse. When he finished explaining, the little girl was looking at him with her mouth hanging open, eyes wide in amazement.

As usual, his model reported, and after exchanging the usual greetings and small talk, she began to undress for the day's work. He told her not to bother, that he felt pretty bad with a cold he had been fighting. He added that he would pay her for the day, but that she could just go home; he just wanted some hot tea and then, off to bed. The model said "Oh, please, let me fix it for you. It's the least I can do."

Seeing the look on her face, the father asked her, "Why did you ask this question, honey?"

He agreed and told her to fix herself a cup too. They were sitting in the living room just exchanging small talk and enjoying their tea, when he heard the front door open and close, then some familiar footsteps. "Oh my God !!!" he whispered loudly, "It's my wife ! Quick !!! Take all your clothes off."

The little girl replied, "Mom says that dinner will be ready in just a couple of sex."

Godâ€™s Email One day God was looking down at Earth and saw all of the rascally behaviour that was going on. So he called one of His angels and sent the angel to Earth for a time. When he returned, he told God, 'Yes, it is bad on Earth; 95% are misbehaving and only 5% are not. God thought for a moment and said, 'Maybe I had better send down a second angel to get another opinion.' So God called another angel and sent him to Earth for a time.

In the church the following Sunday, Mr. Jones dozed off. Noticing this, the preacher put his plan to work. "And who made the ultimate sacrifice for you?" he said, nodding to Mrs. Jones. "Jesus!" Jones cried as his wife jabbed him in the leg with the hatpin. "Yes, you are right, Mr. Jones," said the minister. Soon, Mr. Jones nodded off again. Again, the minister noticed."Who is your redeemer?" he asked the congregation, motioning towards Mrs. Jones. "God!" Mr. Jones cried out as he was stuck again with the hatpin "Right again," said the minister, smiling. Before long, Mr. Jones again winked off. However, this time the minister did not notice.

When the angel returned he went to God and said, 'Yes, it's true. The Earth is in decline; 95% are misbehaving, but 5% are being good.'

As he picked up the tempo of his sermon, he made a few motions that Mrs. Jones mistook as signals to bayonet her husband with the hatpin again.

God was not pleased. So He decided to e-mail the 5% that were good, because he wanted to encourage them, and give them a little something to help them keep going.

The minister asked, "And what did Eve say to Adam after she bore him his 99th son?" Mrs. Jones poked her husband, who yelled, "You stick that dammned thing in me one more time and I'll break it in half and shove it up your ass!" "Amen," replied the congregation.
