Christmas and New Year

ast year, November recorded the highest temperatures for 10 years, and this November we can’t complain either. Other parts of Spain were less lucky with much more rain, and in some cases unwelcome floods. The pictures of Scotland on the television in the last few days look pretty chaotic as well! November seems to be one of the times, after the end of the season, when some businesses close, others change hands, or new ones appear. We wish all these people a prosperous 2011 in their new venues or change of venue. It seems that people are cautiously optimistic for 2011, and what the Spanish call “brotes verdes” (green shoots) may well be in evidence. Estate agents are asking for properties to sell, always a good sign!

The Rose Singers perform their annual St. Mark Boys Choir Christmas concert and also at the end of January a tribute concert for Peter Goodman. 2011 Elections Apart from the 32,000 EU residents in Almería who are entitled to vote in 2011, residents from other countries will be included. This is because Spain has signed agreements that Spaniards living in these countries can vote in their local elections, and their residents in Spain can vote here. The countries affected are Bolivia, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Norway, New Zealand, Paraguay and Peru. Residents from these countries must be aged 18 and have lived in Spain legally for 5 years. Norwegians only have to prove residency for 3 years. With theses additions, the number of non-Spanish residents who can vote is estimated at just under 40,000.

Oustanding Trees An Almería man, Antonio Rubio Casanova, has spent ten years cataloging the most outstanding trees in Almería province. He has also photographed the most spectacular trees, many of which are to be found in the Sierra de María in Vélez Blanco. One of the most famous trees is an enormous pine tree that has partly fallen over and collapsed, but continues to grow. Other spectacular trees are the “Encinas” (evergreen oak) species, an example of which is found in Vélez Blanco that was hit by lightning many years ago and effectively split in two. Enough Alternative Petrol? A company called ‘Bio Fuel Systems S.L.’, closely linked to Alicante University, claim they have developed a new way of producing a “biopetrol”, that could supply the whole Spanish demand. The company are looking at Tabernas, as a future site for a large production facility, as solar energy is a key aspect of their production technique. Spanish, French and Italian investors are backing the scheme and a trial plant has opened in Alicante. Apart from a high level of sunshine the process uses photosynthesis and electromagnetic fields, together with algae from the sea or vegetable waste. The next production facility is to be built in Portugal and the Tabernas project would follow on next, if possible. The company state that the process they use is not a new invention, but they have been the first to make it work, and kerosene is another easily produced fuel.

The gallery is at Calle Martínez Campos in Almería, and is open every day from 11am-2pm and 5.30pm-9pm.

School Computers Classrooms in Almería schools are changing from the traditional idea of a chalk blackboard and a teacher with a brief case full of papers. In the last two school years 23,000 pupils have received a personal laptop computer and blackboards are changing to digital information points. The computers are provided in accordance with the school plan TIC 2.0, designed to introduce computer aided study into schools. María Isabel Requena, delegate for education, considers that the use of laptop computers that can be taken home gives pupils a new incentive to study and explore their subject. Andalucía is the first autonomous province to provide laptops to pupils in secondary education

Exhumations Approved The Junta de Andalucía (governing body) has signed an agreement with an Association dedicated to locate victims of the Civil War. The work of exhumation will be carried out by a specialist company from Andalucía, “Arqueoactiva”. This company has previously done some preparatory excavations connected with finding Civil War victims, but the new agreement means that the exhumations can legally be started. In the main cemetery of Almería lies the remains of Martín Márquez, the last republican mayor of Cuevas del Almanzora. It is known that he was shot by supporters of the Franco regime in the San José cemetery. His family are amongst other families who have formerly asked that such exhumations take place.

New Shark

Town Criers In this highly digital age of computers and information there are still places in Almería province where notices are proclaimed by either loudspeakers or a town crier. Almóncita, Ohanes, Padules and Canjáyar are amongst the places where this can be experienced. Loudspeakers on the church, or the middle of the main square announce society meetings, water or electricity cuts, or work on the streets. The mayor of Almócita, Francisco García, has loudspeakers in 4 locations and a musical introduction alerts residents to a notice. These include information that the doctor is not in attendance a particular day, or that the time of a mass has been changed. Canjáyar has a similar system that just starts with an announcement, “Let it be known that…” and various loudspeakers or men with loud voices have performed this service for probably 30 years. The loudspeakers also, of course, play Spanish carols at Christmas!

Roquetas aquarium has taken delivery of a 2.5 metre “nurse”shark whose name is “Yuba”. The shark has come from the Terra Natura centre and had to be kept in a special tank to start with, as there was a water temperature difference between Roquetas and the aquarium at Terra Natura. Yuba has been slowly acclimatized to the normal water temperature here and is being fed a daily diet of mussels, squid and above all hake. Yuba is joining the other 7 sharks at the aquarium.

Help For NASA A company in Almería has been awarded a contract to help deal with data collected from the sun. IPTV Solutions, a technology-based company installed in the Science and Technology Park of Almeria (PITA), is immersed in a collaborative project with the American Space Agency (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA), which consists of implementing a server, capable of managing a data volume of over one thousand gigabytes per day. The cost is budgeted at 30,000 euros and the project is expected to be completed in late December. Francisco Bermúdez, managing director, explains that the images captured by NASA satellite from SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory) can be viewed by scientists in an acceptable time and with high resolution, using their system. NASA put in orbit the SDO satellite from the main centre for space activities in the United States, Cape Canaveral, on 11 February to help astronomers understand the sun's influence in the life of the earth, to try to understand how it affects climate and technological systems. Success for Spanish Actress The ninth International Short Film Festival "Almería en Corto” to be held from December 6th-11th in Almería has awarded its highest award “Almería, land of the movie” to the Spanish actress Mercedes Sampietro, who along with her team came to the province to shoot the final part of 'The Bird of Happiness'. She becomes the first Spanish actress to receive this award. Airport Controllers Strike Almería airport was hit by the air-traffic controllers strike that started on Friday December 3rd, just before the weekend and the following fiesta days. Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero reacted by signing an order that put air-traffic control in the hands of the Ministry of Defence. In the case of Almería airport this meant that the air-traffic controllers came from the Alcantarilla air base in Murcia. This restored the airport schedule back to normality. Any potential travellers who had their flights cancelled were advised to keep their receipts and all paperwork in the event that a claim was made for compensation.

Planned Emergency Heliports Luciano Alonso

New Tourist Agreements Luciano Alonso is the councillor for Almería province responsible for tourism and sport. As a result of a team going to the recent “World Travel Market” tourist exhibition in London, Thomas Cook has agreed to return to the area and bring 100,000 tourists here in 2011. They will be allocated to 11 hotels in the area, with stays of 3-7 days. The chosen hotels are in Roquetas and Mojácar. Almería province has also been included in the ‘Turismo Senior Europeo 2011’ that will bring 20,000 tourists from countries such as Poland and the Czech Republic. The tourist department have also participated in a tourist promotion that is aimed at Nordic countries such as Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. 120 tour operators

The 061 emergency services of the health authority plan to have 12 new helicopter landing sites throughout Almería province. The sites are chosen on the basis of population and distance from a hospital. The first four sites are to be in Pulpí, Vera, Albox and Serón. This starts the second phase of heliports, the first phase being to have heliports at each hospital. The sites have to be carefully chosen, taking into account wind and altitude. The Vera site will be near the Guardia Civil headquarters, and the Pulpí site near the football ground. After these four initial sites others are planned at Abla, Adra, Berja, Carboneras, Laujar de Andarax, María, Ohanes and Tabernas. This will bring the number of helicopter access to 15, including the hospitals. Javier García Águilar, coordinator of the 061 service, says that ideally there should be a proper helicopter site in each town, but the new plan would give a greatly improved service.

DVD of the Month The Karate Kid

Enjoyable, if slightly overlong remake that won't trample anyone's fond memories of the original film, thanks to a strong script, impressive direction and superb performances from Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. The Karate Kid is a revamp-slash-remake of the 1984 hit, only with the action transposed to China, a 12-year-old lead instead of a teenager and, despite the title, kung fu instead of karate. Jaden 'Son of Will' Smith (his parents both served as producers on the film) stars as 12-year-old Dre Parker, who's upset when his mother's (Taraji P Henson) job forces them to move from Detroit to Beijing. When Dre meets cute violinist Meiying (Han Wenwen) he thinks things are looking up, but his illusions are quickly shattered when he falls foul of a group of vicious bullies, led by Cheng (Wang Zhenwei). Fortunately, kindly maintenance man Mr Han (Jackie Chan) agrees to teach Dre kung fu, so he can take on the bullies in an upcoming martial arts tournament. Smith is excellent as Dre, pulling off the physical requirements of the role and generating strong, likeable chemistry with Chan, Henson and Wenwen. Chan is equally good, toning down his usual, goofy screen persona in favour of something slightly darker and more serious that works well. The fight scenes are well staged and enjoyable to watch, while the training montage sequences are heightened by the film's strong use of (presumably contractually obliged) Beijing locations, including â€“ yes! â€“ the Great Wall of China. There are several nicely observed details, such as Dre lighting up when he sees the credits for SpongeBob on TV, only to discover that it's dubbed into Chinese. . Worth seeing? With a strong script, superb locations and terrific performances, The Karate Kid is an enjoyable, emotionally engaging remake that won't upset fans of the original film. Highly recommended.

So Now You Know... Hell’s Bell In February 1980, the seminal rock group AC/DC were just about to release an album entitled “Highway to Hell” that they were sure would rocket them to fame. On February 19th, Bon Scott. the hard drinking Scottish front man, passed out in the back of a friend’s car, and subsequently died. After the chaos had subsided the band replaced him with Brian Johnson, and recorded “Back in Black”, considered to be one of the greatest rock albums of all time. The band commissioned a one ton bronze bell, called “Hell’s Bell” which featured on the first track of the album and in many live concerts in forthcoming years. The Sandwich Sandwich is a town in England and Edward Montagu, an admiral, was promoted to being an earl in 1660. He took the town’s name Sandwich as part of his title. 100 years later the 4th Earl of Sandwich was John Montagu, who was a prolific gambler. He got involved in a game of cards that lasted for 24 hours. John Montagu was used to having no sleep, but no food was a different matter! To keep himself going he ordered chunks of meat placed between two slices of bread. This became popular and was of course called a “sandwich”, leading to a whole new concept, and a new industry for the catering trade. A Classical Pop Star The Hungarian, Franz Liszt, lived from 1811-1886 and apart from being a composer he was a genius at playing the piano. He was also considered very “dashing”. He made the most of this and women regularly fainted at one of his concerts. He toured Europe where the same thing happened and he became a sensation. The way that his fans, and particularly women, reacted to him was called “Lisztomania”, about the same thing as “Beatlemania”. He was deluged with letters and requests for a lock of his hair. To cater for this demand he bought a long haired dog and sent dog hair clippings to his admirers.

Hair Growth As late as 1942, male patients in some US hospitals were castrated to calm them down. Anatomist James Hamilton was doing a study of castrated men at Winfield State Mental Hospital in Kansas. One day, the identical twin brother of one of the castrated inmates came to visit. James noticed that the visiting twin was completely bald, whereas the hospital twin had a good head of hair. James asked permission to inject the hospital twin with testosterone. After six months of this treatment, apart from being castrated, he was now completely bald as well. Dr Hamilton had proved the link between testosterone and hair growth. Red Sky at Night, Shepherdsâ€™ Delight The colours we see in the sky are due to the rays of sunlight being split into colors of the spectrum as they pass through the atmosphere and ricochet off the water vapour and particles in the atmosphere. The amounts of water vapour and dust particles are good indicators of weather conditions. They also determine which colours we will see in the sky. During sunset the sun is low in the sky, and it transmits light through the thickest part of the atmosphere. A red sky suggests an atmosphere loaded with dust and moisture particles which usually indicates high pressure and stable air coming in from the west. Basically good weather will follow. Not Possible Today! In 1971, Philip Zimbardo, a psychology lecturer at Stamford University in the US designed an experiment. Volunteer students were promised payment and they were randomly designated as prisoners or guards. Prisoners were handcuffed without warning, taken by a police car to a makeshift jail in the basement of the psychology department and given a uniform and numbers. Guards were given uniforms and told to â€œenforce the rulesâ€?. After a few days the guards started to devise degrading rituals for their prisoners who in turn became depressed, agitated or apathetic. It was so dramatic, it was stopped after six days.

Boost for Flamenco

n November 17th, 24 members of an international committee dedicated to preserving cultural activities, unanimously put flamenco on their list.

1950s flamenco flourished with performances at important festivals in Málaga, Córdoba and Seville, as well as Almería. Paco de Lucía became one of the most famous guitarists.

Flamenco has grown into a complicated merge of singing, dance, and music. If you search out a bar where serious flamenco is performed you will find it is very different from the “Flamenco Nights” that many hotels put on for their guests.

At a serious flamenco performance it is all improvised, or made up as they go along, and no two performances are the same. A performance in a small gathering of friends is known as a “juerga”. Flamenco is made up of four elements; Cante-Voice, Baile-Dance, Toque-Guitar and Jaleo which is spontaneous hand clapping, stomping and shouts of encouragement. At the start of a flamenco performance, the guitarist plays a few phrases, the singer listens, and then launches into his or her intense feelings in song, inspired by the guitarist. If the singer is also the dancer then this progresses as well. The guitarist and singer have to form a bond where each performer “feeds” off the other one. Rhythmic hand clapping is another essential element.

The organization that singled out flamenco is a committee set up in 2003 by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). They concentrate on minority cultural activities that are considered part of a national heritage and may be lost or changed by other countries. Some grants are available if needed, from a central fund.

Andalucía is recognized as being the home of Spanish flamenco, and many flamenco performers Tomatitio have been picked out for international approval and honours, such as Pastora Pavón, who died in 1969, considered the most famous female flamenco performer ever. Modern day Montse Cortés is also very famous, along with Estrella Morente and apart from being well-known in Spain they have achieved an international audience through tours and the release of albums. Guitarist Tomatito from Almería has just been awarded a Latin “Grammy” in Las Vegas for the best flamenco CD, which he recorded with the Spanish National Orchestra. The Motorway with Problems

n 2004, a consortium of companies using the name “Aucosta” bid successfully to build the AP-7 toll road from Vera to Cartagena. The opening date was set in the contract as December 31st 2006, and the contract was a “Build-OperateTransfer” arrangement, for 36 years.

to have devised an ingenious way to pocket some of the money, but when that was remedied it didn’t help much. In 2009, the motorway had a daily average of 3,174 vehicles. It was obvious that this and other toll roads had problems.

This meant that Aucosta paid for the construction of the motorway, amounting to 650 million euros, ran it for 36 years and paid off the loans with the toll income, and after 36 years gave it back to the Spanish government. The maths was fairly easy; if you got an average daily traffic of 7,000 vehicles in 2007, rising to 28,000 in 2039, it gave you an annual profit of just over 8%.

In 2010, it was announced that the concession was obviously not working, and the government proposed to buy out the operators and take away the tolls. On closer inspection it was found that if only the “worst” of the toll roads were bought out, the government still didn’t have sufficient available funds.

The central control room

Initial problems just before it should have opened apparently included a goat falling down a tunnel ventilation tube. It didn’t open on December 31st 2006, and “equipment delays” for the toll booths was blamed. Then the company admitted that they were working to a slightly different safety plan for the motorway tunnels, rather than the contract terms, and this had caused the delay. It finally opened in March 2007. The collapse of the construction industry since the motorway was started, and then the financial crisis, soon meant that the sums were not adding up. Instead, the Spanish government have come up with a plan that they hope will work. They are proposing to loan the toll road operators about 80 million euros in 2011, and some in 2012 and some in 2013. This will be split between the various consortiums in difficulty, with the Vera-Cartagena consortium being one of the worst, with traffic now down to 30% of that estimated for 2010. How they are going to do it is not too complicated. For each of the three years they will lend the operators an amount equivalent to the income from the tolls. These loans are to be paid back, with interest, when the operating contract expires. The government have chosen a period of three years because they are convinced that in this time the economy will have improved, tourism will have returned, and the operators will have stopped thinking negative thoughts! That is, if the government are right.

The toll motorway from Vera is very handy if you wish to get to San Javier airport quickly, but a trip to fetch and take back your loved ones costs 50 euros. It has been indicated by the Spanish government that the amount charged on these toll roads will be increased in 2013. This toll road is the first and only one in AlmerĂa province. It is probably a good thing there are no more, with drastically over optimistic estimates.

Married or Single?

Most drivers do not realize that if they get a mobile call and they pull over to the side of the road and stop, they can still lose points and get a fine if caught. (The only ‘phone calls you can make from the side of the road are emergency This is not actually foolproof, but it comes from ones). Nearly 3,000 drivers have gone to these centres where they can get some of their points back. The courses are for a total of 24 hours if you have lost all your points, or 12 hours if you have lost some of your points. 56% of the drivers coming to get some points back are single men aged between 26 and 40. Nearly half of the lost points are for speeding, followed by using a mobile whilst driving, (30%) and then drink-driving. In the Canary Islands only 20% of points lost are for Adjusting your radio, or putting a CD in, count as speeding. the same as using a mobile or programming your In Almería province since 2006, drivers have lost GPS. The aim of this operation is to help and support ALL residents in Arboleas with their queries and problems and they can also arrange appointments for Residencias at the Almeria office of Extranjeros. Please consider giving up just an hour or two once a week to walk with one of their abandoned puppies and dogs. What’s On Dog House Foundation of Huércal-Overa Following the continued recession, as well as the long hot summer, the number of dogs at the recently opened 'Dog House Foundation’ of Huercal Overa has increased considerably. To date, and all through the hot summer months, we believe we are the only centre to have never failed to help, advise or admit an abandoned dog which has been brought to our attention. The charity now requires your help and needs metal feeding bowls, collars and leads of all sizes as well as any dog toys that you may be able to spare to help make the lives of these poor forgotten animals a little more bearable. Also, in anticipation of the forthcoming winter months, blankets and bedding, as well as towels and sheets would be gratefully received to help keep the dogs warm and dry during the 'rainy season'. Volunteers are needed to assist in the bathing, grooming and walking and socializing of the dogs at the centre, and to help with the ever increasing amount of paperwork associated with the running of such an organisation.

"No Vote, No Voice" AUAN has been in contact with officials at the census office regarding elections, and can confirm that on October 6th 20,000 letters were sent to EU residents in Almería attaching a Voter Registration Form (DFA-1) so that they can register to vote in the forthcoming local elections next May. The form has been sent to persons not registered to vote in the local elections, but who are resident in Spain, and sent to the address on your “Padrón” details. (Those already on the voting register will not receive the letter, and are automatically registered). Persons receiving such a letter may: 1. Register to vote by post: Fill in the form in, sign and date it and send it to: Delegación Provincial de Almeria del Censo Electoral, Plaza de San Pedro, 8. 04001 Almería. This form will have the “Padrón” details pre-inserted. A stamp not needed to return the form. 2. Register to vote via the internet: Using your NIE number and a password or, “Clave de tramitación telematica” or “CTT”, sent to the recipient with the form and the web address for registration. It is anticipated that many EU citizens living in illegal homes will fail to receive their letter because they are unable to record a valid postal address on their Padrón. Will was returning home from a business trip. It had been an exhausting trip and he was not in a good mood. The airport's Christmas ‘musak’ was getting him down, and the decorations were tacky.

'Today we'll relax a little and play a spelling game before we break up for the Christmas holidays,' says Mrs Anand, the primary schoolteacher. Each of you will stand up, tell us your name, what your father does, spell what your father does, and then explain it to us. All right, Jack, you can go first.'

As he queued at the check-in desk he daydreamed about the plastic mistletoe hung over the luggage scale. Being in a bad mood, he said to the woman at the counter, "You know, even if I weren't married, I wouldn't kiss you." That's not what it's there for," said the attendant. "It's so you can kiss your luggage goodbye!”.

The Grace Benjamin, a nine-year-old lad was asked to say 'grace' before Christmas lunch. The whole family bowed their heads in preparation. He began his prayer, thanking God for all his friends, naming them one by one. Then he thanked God for Mummy, Daddy, brother, sister, Grannie, Grampa, and all his aunts and uncles. Benjamin then began to thank God for the food. He gave thanks for the turkey, the chipolatas, the cranberry sauce, the bread sauce, the Christmas pudding, the Yule log, the roast potatoes and even the brandy butter. Benjamin paused, and everyone waited .....and waited. After a long silence, he looked up at his mother and asked, “If I thank God for the Brussels sprouts, won't he know that I'm lying?”

Why Santa Can't Possibly Be a Man: Men can't pack a bag. Men would rather be dead than caught wearing red velvet. Men would feel their masculinity is threatened ... having to be seen with all those elves. Men don't answer their mail. Men would refuse to allow their physique to be described even in jest as anything remotely resembling a "bowl full of jelly." Men aren't interested in stockings unless somebody's wearing them. The Wish The Santa Claus at the shopping mall was very surprised when a young lady aged about 20 years old walked up and sat on his lap. Now, we all know that Santa doesn't usually take requests from adults, but she smiled very nicely at him and asked 'What do you want for Christmas?' 'Something for my mother, please,' replied young lady sweetly. 'Something for your mother? Well, that's very loving and thoughtful of you,' smiled Santa. 'What do would you like me to bring her?' Without pausing, the lady answered quickly, 'A millionaire son-in-law.'
