The Rain in Spain

T

he famous sentence "The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain", taught to Eliza Doolittle, has not been very accurate lately! It has rained heavily and consistently. Almería province has come off light compared to other parts of Andalucía. Although the average yearly rainfall for the province is given as 138 litres, in the two months from the middle of December until the middle of February we had 370 litres. Cadiz drowned under 900 litres for the same period and the vast majority of reservoirs were forced to let the water levels down for safety reasons. This, added to the rainfall caused very serious flooding, particularly in Jaén, Córdoba and Seville. Meanwhile, Carnaval events suffered from the rain, but fortunately it stopped before the final procession at Aguilas. Officially we are now in Lent, the period of 40 days that finishes on Easter Sunday, April 4th, in 2010. Religious events take place such as the choral mass that is being celebrated in Vera Parish church on Friday March 19th. Big celebrations, other than religious ones are discouraged during lent, and even marriages were previously discouraged as well. So there are plenty of exhibitions and other "cultural" activities before Easter. March 11th

is the famous, and very local, "Día de La Vieja", An Easter Procession where children, parents and friends go for a picnic in the "campo" (countryside) and after the meal, throw stones, or beat with sticks a symbolic "granny" effigy, made from tissue paper on a wooden frame, containing sweets in the head! The origins of this are lost in time, but Cuevas del Almanzora is believed to have observed this strange fiesta the longest, and there it is celebrated during the morning. It is thought that the grannies may have taken their grandchildren off into the countryside for a picnic to relieve the religious severity of lent, but there are many origins, or theories as to how this came about. March 14th is UK Mother's Day, correctly known as Mothering Sunday, and again folk history has it that this was the day when people in domestic service were allowed a day off to go and see their mothers. Spanish mother's day does not change dates, as it is always the first Sunday in May. March 17th is St Patrick's Day and even the Spanish are now quite used to seeing the strange costumers and hats (usually supplied by 'Guinness'). Two days later is Spanish fathers' day, on March 19th, as it is the feast of Saint Joseph (San José in Spanish). This is not an official day's holiday, but Spanish fathers may well finish work at lunchtime, if their bosses are amenable. Finally clocks go forward one hour at 3am in the early morning of Sunday, March 28th. Easter Sunday falls on April 4th, so Thursday, April 1st and Good Friday, April 2nd are National fiestas, so banks and official bodies will be shut. Hopefully Spanish tourists and other nationalities will come here for Easter as if they leave on Wednesday, March 31st they do not have to go back to work until Monday April 5th. The beach bars, now undergoing the annual face-lift, will all be open in time for Easter.

Focus on Local News Helicopter Crash The preliminary report into the crash of the Spanish Coastguard Helimer 207 Helicopter, has been released by the Spanish Aviation Authority. There is no present indication of mechanical or electrical faults, nor was the helicopter short of fuel before it crashed into the sea. Contact between the crew and Almería air traffic control was normal and uneventful. The only survivor of the four-man crew similarly reported no incidents before the crash. The crew had participated in over 400 rescues in 2009 and were all highly experienced. The pilot had 4,000 hours flying experience in helicopters, including military duty and the co-pilot 1,000 hours. The data from the "black boxes" is being further analysed to try and throw some light on this tragic accident. The helicopter was 5 miles away from Almería airport in calm weather conditions when it crashed in 90 metres of water, returning from a routine mission on January 21st. The rescue mission, including the extraction of the three dead crew, was the most complex ever undertaken in Spain.

Any further rainfall during the rest of February will just have increased this amount. Agricultural workers are not impressed, but reservoirs have been filled to full capacity in some cases.

Final TDT Switchover Starting from March 10th until April 3rd the last analogue TV stations will be switched to TDT only, and following April 3rd all TV viewers will receive no transmissions unless they have installed a TDT box or a new TV with this built in. At the moment it is considered that 92% of the population have TDT transmissions available to them and this will increase during the last phase of the switchover.

Medical Driving Tests to be Tightened New regulations will make sure that the " medical" tests for the application or renewal of a driving licence are more stringent. This has come about because many centres that take the money for such tests, are suspected of either being lax, or not doing them at all! In future the results of the tests will be electronically sent to the traffic departments who can monitor the tests, or prove that none have taken place. The driving schools who deal with the paperwork for new drivers will also have to provide evidence that a " new" driver is not in possession of an existing licence that has been suspended under the "points" system. Also the period between tests, and therefore renewal of licence, will be extended to every 10 years for those over 45 (instead of every 5 years) and every 5 years for those over 70 (instead of every 2 years). These changes will come into place at the end of 2010.

Greenpeace In Court!

The owners of the Hotel Algarrobico in Carboneras are in court in Madrid against 'Greenpeace' for painting "Illegal Hotel" in large letters on the hotel on July 12th 2007. The hotel developers state that the painted area totalled 1,200 sq. metres and permanently damaged the aluminium window and balcony door frames. They are seeking damages of 200,000 euros. The letters were painted to a height of 3 floors of the 21-storey hotel after "The Rainbow Warrior" arrived off the coast Record Rainfall The amount of rain that had fallen in Almería province outside the hotel. These properties are being put on the open market by a subsidiary company 'Cimenta2'. 500 properties in Almería province are available, with information at branches of 'Cajamar' banks. Many of the new properties are being offered at prices that are stated to be 20% below market value and have attractive mortgage terms for those qualifying under the Junta de Andalucía plan to dispose of the housing stock. The most expensive property is a fivebedroom villa in San José (Nijar) being sold for 825,000 euros. Alternatively they are offering properties in the "Lomas del Mar", Vera development from 85,000 euros, or properties in the "Alfonso XIII", Garrucha development from 70,000 euros.

The El Eljido Mayor Juan Enciso, still mayor of El Ejido (he will not resign) has been remanded in custody since October along with 3 other key figures in the alleged corruption scandal in El Ejido. On February 16th he was transferred to the 'Albolote' prison in Granada, where he was later transferred to the 'Virgen de Las Nieves' hospital in Granada for a urinary operation. The judge investigating the corruption case, Montserrat Peña, had asked the hospital for regular reports on his post-operative condition and level of pain. She had to decide whether Enciso would be allowed to spend any period of recuperation at his family house, as requested by his solicitor, under guard. Unofficial judicial sources stated that Enciso might well be returned to the Granada 'Albolote' following the operation as it is a more secure prison than the Almería one for this type of remand client, and he would be less of a local celebrity there! On February 24th Enciso was taken back to the Granada prison, following his discharge from hospital.

Bodega Triumph The Wine producer 'Bodegas Fuente Victoria' in the Alpujarras, owned by Mojácar businessman Pedro Squarez and other partners has recently received two important accolades. The National Parador Hotel group have selected wines from this bodega to be featured on the wine lists of all the Parador Hotel restaurants as being, "The best wines from Almería province". José Hernández, restaurant director of the Mojácar Parador hotel attended a celebration event recently, when the wines from Pedro Suarez's bodega were officially incorporated into this exclusive list. stated that the selection of these wines put them in the "Q for Quality", league, "From the best hotel chain in the world", along with 'Raf' tomatoes and Garrucha prawns from Almería province. The same selection of wines has also been chosen to be available at the famous "Tapas Route" in Almería where restaurants compete to be on a list of first class establishments to be visited as part of a gourmet tapas event. 29 restaurants are featured on the 2010 list for the event that takes place from March 11th-21st. 18,000 flyers have been printed and each restaurant stamps these. Every 7th tapa is free! Th event is featured on "facebook" under; 'Almería de Tapas'. A spokesperson for the 'Fuente Victoria' Bodega, Rosa Tamayo, stated that the wines were competitive with the best available, in terms of quality and price.

Wind Power The amount of electricity available from wind farms in Andalucía is enough for 4 million households, just under 50% of the population. This makes Andalucía number 8 in the list of European producers of this energy, with Spain as a country in 2nd place. Almería province has 17 wind parks in operation, slightly more than Granada and Málaga provinces, but considerably less than Cádiz that boasts 63 parks. The major Spanish manufacturer of wind turbines is 'Gamesa' who export to many other countries.

IKEA No! IKEA has announced that their expansion plans for 2010-2015 do not include any project in Almería province. Instead they are looking at Seville and Granada. The Spanish branch 'Ikea Ibérica' achieved sales of 1,411 million euros during 2009, slightly down on 2008. The

Focus on Local News continued existing stores in Málaga and Seville attracted 22 million visitors each last year. Ikea consider that the Murcia store is near enough to Almería and have 300,000 subscribers to their catalogue 'Ikea Family' in the province. Their expansion plan until 2015 envisages 15 new stores with 12 in Spain and 3 in Portugal. Ikea first came to Spain in1996.

Simon decided that their existing kit was looking a bit dowdy! He therefore contacted a supplier in Derby, and the three teams now have new kit. Simon says that the town hall were delighted that he had agreed to sponsor this upgrade, as other municipalities were much smarter before this new deal. The young players are of course delighted!

Major IVA (VAT) Changes

Almería Parador Hotel

The Spanish parliament has passed a bill aimed at dramatically changing the way IVA (VAT) is paid by selfemployed people and small businesses. At present, at the end of every quarter, a return is made, consisting of Facturas (invoices) and the associated IVA amount, (now normally 16% but due to rise to 18% in July). The IVA on these facturas is then paid to the Hacienda (tax authority). The new proposal is that the IVA on these invoices will not be paid until the selfemployed person or small company has received the invoiced amount and IVA. This will allow for late payment of invoices or non-payment. How to achieve this is going to be very complicated and will involve two accounting systems; one for bills issued and one for money collected. It is hoped that the paperwork and regulations will be completed by the summer, before the 3rd quarter starts and IVA goes up. Apart from changes to Spanish tax laws, EU permission and the invoking of "escape" clauses in EU regulations will have to be negotiated. It is anticipated in the UK that after the General Elections VAT will rise to 20% to generate more state income.

The provision of a new 'Parador' National Hotel in Almería City has been accepted in principle. It will be sited either in the existing castle area or adjacent. The present expansion plan for new Parador National Hotels that are state owned, and leased to the operators, do not however allow for any such project before 2012. The mayor of Almería and the Spanish government delegate Miguel Corpas, agree that there will need to be a lot of discussion as to the exact location of the hotel and how much land is required. The castle itself is a protected building and receives 650,000 visitors a year. If all goes according to plan the new Parador might be open by 2020.

Water Debts 17 town halls owe 4 million euros for the water they have purchased. In turn, 'Galasa', which is 51% owned by the provincial government of Almería, owe 2.5 million euros to 'Acuamed' and another 1 million to the supply company 'Segura'. 'Galasa' have therefore borrowed 3.5 million euros from the 'Cajasol Bank', at a cost of 34,600 euros per month for the next 10 years! 'Galasa' say that they need this loan to finance future projects including building deposits for the water from Carboneras desalination plant to the Almanzora valley. 'Galasa' supply water to 29 municipalities in the Almería province.

'Silestone' in Canada Apart from their partnership with Formula 1 and Fernando Alonso, the Cantoria based 'Silestone' Group were awarded the contract to supply all the synthetic worktops at the Olympic village in Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics. The Canadian site is spread over 56,000 m2 and has 600 buildings. 'Silestone' has supplied 6,500 m2 of their worktops that are in 859 bathrooms and kitchens. Spanish Troubadours For centuries, poor students earned money by playing musical instruments in groups. Nowadays, dressed as troubadours, modern groups tour restaurants and attend weddings or other celebrations. With the economic crisis, the numbers of people interested in joining, or forming such a group, (known as "Tunas" in Spanish) have increased dramatically. Traditionally, the groups come from university students. The first such group in Almería province came not from the university, but from the 'Bahía de Almería' college. The musicians play a variety of instruments from guitars, banjos, small drums, flutes or accordions. They traditionally play any sort of popular Spanish, Latin-American music or dance music. The groups are available for hire and have on

A Right To A Home The Andalucían Parliament (governing body for Almería province) have approved a new law to make the acquisition of a subsidised home, to those who qualify, a legal right. Town halls have been required to make a register of those families or single people who wish to be included for the provision of subsidised housing, and now the applicants have access to a tribunal if their municipality does not offer such a home. Applicants must have lived in the municipality for 3 years, and therefore be registered on the 'padron', and earn less than 36,000 euros gross per year, or 3,000 euros per month. The applicant(s) cannot be householders already, and must be included in the register of applicants. The

Focus on Local News continued amount they have to pay if purchasing the property cannot be more than a third of the family or individual income, or if renting more than a quarter. Grants exist to help with the initial paperwork or transfer costs. Municipalities must now earmark land for subsidised housing including 30% of any large development.

Substantial Profit The person who purchased a 'Euro Lottery' ticket for 4 euros, drawn on February 12th, made a good profit as they won 64,809,203 euros! The winning ticket was sold at the Official Lottery office No. 2 in Mojácar, and the amount won became the fourth largest amount ever won in Spain. Jesús Ibáñez who opened the lottery office in 1998 was delighted that he had sold the winning ticket. Purchasers of tickets from him have previously won 136 million pesetas in 2000, 1.6 million euros in 2003 and a shared prize of 200,000 euros in 2007. The winner was reputedly keeping a low profile until they had decided what they were going to do with the money!

larger company, have unveiled a revolutionary irrigation and growing system for tomato plants. The Envía Golf Hotel was chosen to present this new system, field tested in areas of El Ejido. Pedro Stratijevsky, president of Naan Dan Jain, considers that current tomato production of 12 kilograms per square metre, or exceptionally 20 kilograms, can be increased to 70 with their new system. The key element is the amount of oxygen that is contained in the water used to irrigate the plants. Acidity, salt levels and temperature of the water also have to be taken into account. The new computer controlled system is called 'AgroNaan' and is claimed to save water, fertiliser and CO2 emissions as well.

Re Born! The renown Spanish group 'Los Cartum' from Cuevas del Almanzora, have reformed and are launching a series of concerts. The group was founded in 1965, firstly called 'Los Vikingos' then 'Los Iberos' and finally 'Los Cartum'. They are famous for the unique quality of their music. They never made a record or a CD, but travelled extensively through Spain. Their last concert was in Tarragona in 1973. The revived group has the original members Andrés Valero, Antonio Campoy and a later addition José Belmonte. Their first new concert was in Cuevas on February 19th.

Mojácar Parador Manuel Martín Cuenca

The film maker Manuel Martín Cuenca has completed his new film "La Mitad de Óscar”. Scenes were shot in the Cabo de Gata cemetery, the restaurant at La Isleta de Moro and Cabo de Gata park. The film has been made by 'La Loma Blanca Productios' and has been subsidised by Cuban and Spanish bodies. Martín Cuenca conceived the idea for this film whilst he was staying at the Isleta de Moro hostal. The film will be released in the autumn and stars Verónica Echgui and her French husband Dennis Deyrie.

World Patents for Tomato Production The Spanish company Naan Dan Jain Iberica, part of a

Sánchez Zapata from Almería, with a diploma in tourism, is compiling a unique guide to abandoned property in the province. His website www.muten.es is intended to provide a photographic and historical list of abandoned properties, or complete villages, along with GPS location information. His site lists areas such as Portocarrera near Gérgal, an Arab complex, totally abandoned, and accessible only by foot. Other locations are the living and working buildings of abandoned mine workings, some the former homes previously to up to 2,500 workers. Los Rojas in the municipality of Nacimiento is another completely abandoned village, 1,500 metres above seal level. Sánchez hopes that the various town halls will undertake the provision of at least proper paths, to encourage tourism to these unique and historic locations.

The grants cover the installation of 235 time clocks that are activated by the surrounding light conditions, as opposed to a particular time of the day or night. Amongst the places that will benefit from this technology are Pechina, Arboleas, Lubrín, Macael, Fines, Olula del Río, Partaloa, Serón and Tíjola. Calculations conclude that the energy saved by the fitting of these clocks will amount to 15% and save 239 tonnes of emitted CO2.

New Airport Link

are celebrating the announcement that "Mother Cándida", a Jesuit nun who died in 1912, is to be made a Saint of the Catholic Church by Pope Benedict XVI, in Rome on October 17th. Mother Cándida will become the first female Spanish Saint. A committee rigorously examines the process of becoming a "Saint". Part of the "test" relates to the miraculous curing of at least one seriously ill person. In 2008, the committee agreed that a "miraculous" cure had taken place after intercession by Mother Cándida, involving another terminally ill nun.

From March 2nd, a new bus service is in operation from Almería central bus station to the airport. The 'Line 20' bus will operate 7 days a week with 4 buses available at 15 minute intervals Monday to Friday, 3 on Saturday until 3pm, and 2 for the remainder of Saturday and Sunday. This service is seen as a vital link to those people who have arrived at the central bus station and wish to travel on to the airport. The service has a dedicated stand with an automatic barrier operated by remote control by the drivers.

Oracle or Dogzilla!

Good Tenants? The Guardia Civil Police Authorities are looking to rent 10 properties in Roquetas, 10 in Garrucha and 20 in Vera. They need these properties from June 16thSeptember 15th for 2010 & 2011. The tenants will be Guardia Civil families on fortnightly holidays and the idea of renting properties "in bulk" is that the cost for the families will be below average.

No More Tolls The only toll road in Almería province from Vera to Cartagena is in desperate financial trouble. The initial viability plan envisaged 7,000 vehicles per day. The operators would be pleased if they regularly had this quantity of traffic every week! The Spanish Transport Ministry is therefore planning to drastically modify the licensing conditions whereby the builders operate the toll road for 36 years, and to scrap the toll fees. The new toll-road, privately funded by a consortium of constructers and banks cost 650 million euros to build. One of the consortium’s builders, 'Ploder', is in danger of going into bankruptcy. Amendments to the legal constitution of the operating company 'Aucosta' and State legislation will have to be undertaken.

Back to The USA

The American trimaran "Oracle", nicknamed "Dogzilla" beat the Swiss trimaran "Alinghi" in the 33rd 'Americas Cup' contest in Valencia. After over two years of legal battles in the US courts the races were between just the two yachts and crews. The US yacht was convincingly faster and was considered the peak of racing yacht design. A defeated Swiss crewmember consoled himself with the opinion that no-one could beat an Spanish Nun to be Canonized "Extraterrestrial yacht"! So Now You Know... Toucans Toucans have long been associated with advertising for 'Guinness'. The bill of a toucan can reach 23 centimetres in length, longer than its body. Because of this they should fall over, but their beaks are full of air holes to stop this happening. They have two toes pointing forwards and two pointing backwards to help them grip branches and trees. When toucans go to sleep they turn their heads round and lay their beaks along their backs. Toucans eat mainly small fruit but are closely related to woodpeckers, jacamars and barbets.

Co-ordination If you are thrown a ball, and catch it, there is an incredible amount of co-ordination. Firstly the eye tells the brain where the ball is, and then the brain processes an intense steam of sensory signals so that you can move position if necessary. Proprioceptor cells send signals to position the legs so that the body is balanced. The cerebellum at the back of the brain handles the co-ordination of the muscles. Commands are sent via the nerves called the basal ganglia in the middle of the brain. Hair cells inside the ears help to provide information so the body can balance.

Gin Gin is made from malted wheat or rye grass and flavoured with juniper berries. "Malting" is the word for the softening and melting process. Gin was originally a Dutch medicine invented by Franciscus de la Bo in 1650, and was intended to cure stomach pains. British soldiers serving in Holland drank it and called it "Dutch courage"! It was drunk in such large quantities it became the "heroin" of the period, causing riots, drunkenness and social problems. In 1736, a law was passed in London prohibiting the sale of gin in less than 2 gallon (about 7.5 litres) quantities.

The Ozone Layer Whatever the disputes over global warming, the Ozone layer is suffering. This layer of gas protects the Earth from ultraviolet rays from the sun. In 1982, scientists noted that during Spring the ozone layer over the Antarctic was thinning, and satellite observation confirmed this in 1985. A special satellite called 'TOMS' now regularly monitors the thickness of the Ozone layer over the Antarctic. CFC gases from refrigerators, aerosols and foam for packaging, are the main culprits. These were banned in 1996 but it may be 100 years before an improvement is noticed.

Hair Humans are almost the only species to have almost bare skin. In the womb, from the 4th month, a baby is covered in 'Lanugo' a fine downy hair. After you are born, until puberty, a fine body hair grows over all your skin that is called 'Vellus' hair. The coarse hair on the head, beards and genital hair is known as 'Terminal' hair. A pigment called melanin mostly determines the colour of your hair. If you are a redhead this is because you have more red melanin than other colours. Black, blonde and brown hair is a mixture of mostly black melanin. Hairs have an erector muscle that pulls the hairs up straight when you are cold and gives you goose pimples! Grog, Shipmates? Admiral Edward Vernon was known as "Old Grog" because of a thick cloak he wore of rough weave. "Gros Grain" is French for such a cloth. Vernon thought sailors had too much neat rum, so in 1740 the daily ration was reduced to half a pint, diluted with two pints of water. This mixture was adopted throughout the Royal Navy, and called "grog". Over 200 years the daily ration shrank to an eighth of a pint (about 60ml) watered down with a quarter of a pint (about 120ml). The Royal Navy continued to supply this "grog" allowance until 1970 when, amidst protests, they scrapped it! Admiral Vernon died in 1757 and "Portobello Road" commemorates his capture of Puerto Bello in Panama.

Gustavo Gillman

A

t the turn of the last century, many famous Englishmen, and other nationalities came to the Almería area, to advise on, or put into place, civil engineering, mines, water and sewage installations, roads and railways. Garrucha port was very important and merited several vice-consuls from countries including England who helped with the export of marble, iron ore and other products. El Pinar, a producer of low-grade iron ore, had 1,500 workers living there working the mines before production and export became uneconomical. Amongst these famous "foreigners" was Gustavo Gillman (1889-1922). This English man came here to design and build the railway system, and was employed by 'The Great Southern of Spain Railway Company'. A Londoner and the son of a business family, he came to Almería and Murcia provinces as a gifted engineer, who designed and built railway tracks, station and railway buildings, bridges and viaducts, and all the associated "logistics" that the railways needed. One of his most famous projects was the "Stove Wharf" at the playa de Stove at Isla de Fraile, Aguilas.

Gustavo took photographs of Almería city, Pulpí, Huércal-Overa, Cantoria, Fines, Olula, Macael, Purchena, Tíjola, Serón, Alcóntar, Bacares, Bayarque, Lúcar, Somontín, Albanchez, Arboleas, Zurgena, Cuevas del Almanzora, Sorbas, Gérgal, Albox and Rioja in Almería province. The latest of his photographs were developed using a process known as "auto-chrome" that gave a hint of colour. Gustavo was friendly with the French Lumiere brothers who developed this technique. The value of these photographs is that they are not studies of monuments, or city functions, but are all taken when he came across groups of the "common" man and their habitat. As such they are a unique portrayal of life. Once the photographs have all been catalogued and identified they will be available for other historians to study, and there will no doubt be many exhibitions as well as a book. The entire collection has been "digitalized".

Gustavo was tall and slim and sported a moustache. One of the few photographs of him shows him with notebook in hand, standing beside a theodolite, surveying some forgotten area. In his spare time, he took his tripod out with him but swapped his surveying equipment for a giant plate camera. He took pictures of the ordinary people, donkeys, agricultural workers, workers on his railways, and life in general in Almería province. The famous local historian and author, Juan Grima, has collected together 500 plates or negatives from his photographs in Almería province, from all parts of the world, where his descendants now live, over a period of six years. Juan Grima travelled not only to various areas of Spain but also England, Portugal and Brazil. The collection is being formed into a 'Gustav Gillman Foundation' and his photographs are to be published by the Spanish publishing company 'Arráez Editores". His photographs are the earliest available record of life in general, and the people of Almería at this period in their development. Other parts of Andalucía were also photographed.

One of the grandsons of Gustavo Gillman, Juan Roberto Gillman, lives in Aguilas and was presented in 2009 with a copy of a book written to record "Aguilas and the English people", in which Gustavo Gillman appeared, firstly as a gifted railway engineer, and secondly as an 'amateur' photographer.

Performing Rights Fury!

P

erforming rights societies charge for the music, films and even book readings that take place at public events. The money obtained is distributed to the professional artists and authors that belong to the society. The Spanish body is known as 'SGAE' (Sociedad General de Autores y Editores). Recently they have become embroiled in vicious disputes.

these, the SGAE collect money from the sales of MP3, MP4 players, USB sticks, hard drives for computers, and any other device than can be used for the downloading or storage of music. These new regulations came into force in 2008 and the income from fees such as these has consequently risen by 72%. If you buy a mobile 'phone that supports MP3 downloads the society get 1.1 euros, or if MP3 & MP4 music, 3.15 euros. There was quite a fierce debate concerning these charges when they came in, so the society reduced the amount they get from sales of virgin CD and DVD sales. They now get 17 céntimos for every blank CD sold and 44 céntimos for every blank DVD.

If a member or group has published songs, and then other musicians or groups perform these songs as part of their own production, the SGAE want a "fee" for the performance. They also want a fee when films or excerpts from DVD performances take place. Concert organisers are required to submit details of their concerts and the music performed, or the SGAE charge a percentage of the entrance money So far so good! He states that if artists or an orchestra are contracted, they have to pay performing rights charges if they play other people's compositions, not the town hall! Cuevas town hall have disputed the payment of 2,700 euros for music performed during their patronal (patron saint) fiestas. An Almería judge has ruled in favour of the town hall because the performers were performing their own compositions! David Bísbal performed a charity concert last April and raised 56,290 euros towards money for 'Juanma' the child suffering from Alexander's syndrome. The SGAE claimed 10%, but after a furore, gave it back!

Cajamar Concerts The Cajamar Foundation in collaboration with Merrick Aran Productions have announced their major artists for the 2010 tour that lasts until December. The soprano Pilar Jurado will perform excerpts from Verdi operas, along with the Almería City Orchestra, on April 24th. Ainhoa Arteta from Murcia is another of the tour soloists and John Malkovitch will present his, "The Infernal Comedy". A concert is promised by the American Jazz singer Bobby Ferrin and on October 15th the French group, "The Swingle Singers" will perform the last concert in this local series in Roquetas.
