Carnival Time For Some
T
his is the time of year when the annual Carnivals are staged, and Águilas Carnival was declared a tourist attraction of National importance in 1997.

There is then a pause to recover, with the final procession on Saturday, Feb 20th when the supporters of the mournful "Doña Cuaresma" seize the Carnival effigy of "Don Carnal", take it to the beach and burn it on a bonfire. Fireworks follow of course, and Carnival is over for another year!
For the nine homeowners in the Albox area, it is unlikely to be a time of great celebration. Since Christmas they have become the centre of attention, through (apparently) no fault of their own. The 'Mail Online' headline of December 31st said it all, "Happy New Year......we're going to bulldoze your homes"! The 'International Property Journal' Carnival is supposed to be the last fling before headline was "The Pain in Spain is Far From Over". the 40 days of Lent, leading up to Easter. In Águilas Equally apt! it runs over a bit! Carnival is also known as "MardiGras". In the UK this day is known as Pancake Day. Huércal-Overa has a special local fiesta on February 8th dating back to 1793. Tradition states that the new church was finished and bonfires were lit in the evening to help the faithful carry the statues and pictures from the old church. This is known as La Noche de Las Lumbres (Night of the Bonfires) and is now an all day fiesta.

Focus on Local News The End to "Pirate" Radio Stations? A new "Audio-Visual" law is going through the Spanish parliament that will affect "pirate" (nonlegal) radio stations. There are thought to be 3,000 illegal stations and only 1,200 legal ones. 387 illegal stations are stated to be operating in Andalucía, the highest number in Spanish territory, apart from the Canary Islands with 482. One of the crackdowns planned is where one station has a licence and uses this to cover other "illegal" ones in other parts of Spain. The new law will formally set up the Spanish State Agency for Radio Communications that has existed since 2003, but never properly been constituted. If everything goes as planned, by June 2010, illegal stations will be mapped and then closed. Apart from illegal radio stations the new law will govern "pay" TV channels such as the new 'Gol' TV station that offers live football, historic football, discussions about football and then anything else about football!

Currently, Luis Caparrós, provincial housing delegate for the Junta de Andalucía (governing body for Almería province) P.S.O.E (Socialist) controlled, is suggesting to the P.S.O.E mayor of Albox, José Garcia, that there may be a way out! The Editor, Pedro Manuel De La Cruz, of the Spanish Almería daily paper 'La Voz de Almería' wrote a strong editorial on Sunday, January 24th, in defence of the owners. He stated, "If we have to go down the legal path, then we must; but all together, at the same time with the same game rules." He concluded, "It is neither fair, nor just….…….that the last English to arrive should be the first to pay." The world is watching, with TV crews on standby! The Spanish mayor of Carratraca in Málaga province, with 860 inhabitants, is in a similar situation regarding 100 properties. He has Rafael Nadal stated, "I am not an executioner!" and has resigned. No other council member is offering to take on the job as mayor!
Albox Disaster At the time of going to press, 9 British ex-pat house owners in the surrounding area of Albox have been informed that "final" appeals against demolition orders against their properties have been made, and demolition will take place possibly in April. Another property in Vera, (Spanish owned), faces a similar threat. If any of these houses are demolished it will be a personal and tragic occurrence for the house owners, in a deep state of shock! It will also be a tragedy for Albox, Almería province and Spain. Attempts to promote tourism may as well be ditched, and the money burnt! What is most unfortunate is that the house owners have never been told since 2002, when planning permission was given (by the then P.P. (Conservative) mayor), that there have been protracted court battles, including an appeal to a high court in Granada. None of these court actions, or the results have ever been communicated to the owners. Pressure groups AUAN & AULAN quickly mobilised their forces, with a march in Almería city on January 11th, and cries
Fitur 2010 The annual Madrid tourism exhibition 'Fitur' took place from January 20th-24th. Almería launched a new web page www.turismodealmeria.org, and Mojácar took a par t of the Junta de Andalucia/Almería stand to cut down on costs. Roquetas, Vera and Mojácar had their annual awards ceremony with Mojácar presenting their 'Los Indalos de Oro' (Gold medals) to Diego Martínez Cano (Chamber of trade), José María Cabellé Horta (President of Servigroup Hotels) and José Batalla Batalla (President of Best Hotels).

Focus on Local News continued Town Hall Debts Figures published with regard to town hall debt recently, are not up to date. Mojácar is shown as having very little debt, but the mayoress, Rosa María Cano, has confirmed that a loan of 2 million euros has been obtained for "essential work" and the amount of money owed to creditors, such as contractors, is about 4 million euros. Other "minor debts" bring the total to about 7 million euros at the end of 2009. Carboneras mayor Cristóbal Fernández, has stated that actual figures are "not to hand" but he estimated the debt as only 300,000 euros (subject to a proper review!). Total debt, with the out of date figures, for Almería province comes to 267 million euros. August 2009 figures regarding the amount owing for unpaid social security payments by town halls has Adra and Vicar in Almería province at the top of the list. They both owe over 200,000 euros. This becomes almost insignificant when compared to "Los Barrios" in Cádiz who owe over 27 million euros!
Babel in its former glory!
Beach Bar Fire During the early evening on January 14th, the 'Babel' beach bar caught fire and was reduced to nothing. The emergency services were quickly on the scene, and civil protection vehicles stood guard over the nearest water top-up points for the Turre fire brigade. Unfortunately the wooden structure burnt rapidly and collapsed. High winds earlier in the day had miraculously died down at the crucial time. Some damage was caused to 'El
Cid', the adjacent beach-bar. Eyewitnesses further down the beach road reported a municipal police vehicle damaged as a result of encountering one of the new speed bumps at full speed. 'Babel' was a well-known popular location, at one time run by Marcos and his partners. A few months ago the "traspaso" (lease) changed hands. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Finally A Solution? The historic abandoned church at Las Salinas, the salt flats near Cabo de Gata, may finally be restored. The Catholic Bishop of Almería and the Almería authorities have signed an agreement so that the church can be repaired and become an educational workshop. Funds are being sought from the Junta de Andalucía (Governing body for Almería province) for the project. The church has experienced a long history of neglect and court actions over ownership and access rights. The church was declared still to belong to the Almería diocese some five years ago after a court battle with the French company that has the salt collection and commercial rights to the surrounding land. In 2005, the company denied access to workers wishing to carry out repair work, and disputed to whom the church belonged. A sign went up following this court action stating that the church would be restored but no money has been available. The church is considered a historic emblem. Before this news was announced a short film was planned, with famous Spanish people taking part, to publicise the church; to be filmed in March. A.C.E.M. The Business Association of Mojácar (Asociación de Comerciantes y Empresarios de Mojácar) is now legally constituted, and consists of a mix of all nationalities trying to promote Mojácar and good business practice. Karin Schröter from Mojácar Estates has been elected President. Interested businesses can join for a monthly cost of 10 euros, and the opening Gala Dinner & Auction on February 6th for 180 people sold out rapidly!

Focus on Local News continued February 15th & 16th sees live radio launches by Jon Gaunt on "Sun Talk" at 'Lua' beach bar and 'The Irish Rover' (both Mojácar Playa), and 'Jazz Life' (Mojácar Pueblo). For event and prize information view www.mojácarlife.com Free Laptops In January and February any pupil of 5th or 6th year of Primary education in Almería province (there are about 14,000 of them) should have started to receive free laptops. A school in Seville was the first to receive theirs as the scheme operates throughout Andalucía. This initiative is part of a major plan for education called 'Escuela TIC 2.0'. The laptops do not have to be kept at school, so the pupils are able to take them home, with parents signing that they will not be mistreated. Computer aided tuition is to be stepped up. Teachers have been undergoing courses to bring their own computer skills up to date! This plan was part of an election promise by the PSOE (Socialist Party) before they were reelected to power, and is 50% finance by the Education Ministry.
to the Maritime Coastguards (Salvamento Marítimo), 9 kilometres off the coast. It has taken off from Almería airport on a routine patrol at 6.30pm. A major search and rescue operation was set under way by air and sea. At 8.30pm the winch operator, Alberto Elvira Vallejo a native of the Canary Islands, was rescued alive from the sea, but the helicopter had sunk to the seabed, 85 metres down. Alberto had searched for his other three-crew members with a portable light, until he ran out of breath. He received a head injury, contusions and the effects of hypothermia. Rescue services, at time of going to press, had located the bodies of the pilot, co-pilot and specialist rescue engineer, within the helicopter. The Spanish Government stated that the rescue operation was one of the most complex ever undertaken, with helicopters, surface ships and two robot submarines in place, and the helicopter "black box" still sending out signals. A major enquiry has been launched involving the manufacturer, aviation experts and crash investigators. The sophisticated helicopter was only introduced into service in June 2009. In July 2006 a helicopter from the same manufacturer, used for fire control, crashed near Tenerife, and five people died. Crash investigators were unable to diagnose the cause of the 2006 crash.
Polaris World The property developer 'Polaris World' with a major presence in Murcia province has debts of 900 million euros. They have petitioned a judge in Murcia for a "debt restructuring" period lasting until the end of March. This action will give them time to try and sort out their problems. If they cannot find a solution the next step is bankruptcy. Banks such as 'Cajamurcia, Bancaja, Banco Popular, CAM' and 'Banco de Valencia' are the main lenders for their various projects. 'Polaris World' spent millions on massive publicity campaigns in Spain and abroad, to try and sell their complexes and Tragic Helicopter Crash At 7.45pm on Thursday January 21st the Almería golf leisure developments. Founded by Pedro air traffic controllers lost contact with an almost García Meroño, the company had major links with new 'Westland Helimar 207' helicopter, belonging the PP (Conservative) party, particularly in Murcia.

Focus on Local News continued Squeaky Clean Properties To help sell the stock of 18,000 unsold properties in Andalucía, a new market is being sought in the UK and other European countries. The properties will be marketed under the name of 'Spanish Homes Network' and every property will be guaranteed 150% legal with all permissions in place, all approvals, 10-year guarantee and licence of first occupation. Each property will be subject to 27 categories that will include "Sea Views", "Other Views" and "Environmental Characteristics". The website is www.spanishhomesnetwork.com, so far available in Spanish and English. Sales to non-Spanish buyers fell in 2009 to 10% of the market. The aim of the initiative is to promote fully legal property sales and overcome the bad image of "illegal" properties. The campaign includes a comprehensive presence at property exhibitions. The UK, Germany, France, Ireland, Baltic & Nordic countries will be targeted initially, followed by Israel, UAE, and Russia. At present no properties in Almería province are available on this site!
'Cirque du Soleil' - Final Cancellation Last November we reported that the amended dates for the arrival of the French Canadian Circus with their 'Saltimbanco' show, in Almería City, was to be March 2010, later amended to April. We also
reported the death of one of their acrobats called "Sacha" in Montreal, after falling from a trapeze, on October 18th. This accident led to an exhaustive review of their safety requirements and procedures. 'Cirque du Soleil' decided that they needed a working height of 14.5 metres, instead of the 12.5 metres they had previously stipulated. This extra 2 metres of height has ruled out the Mediterranean stadium in Almería City, as being suitable. The appearance in Almería is therefore cancelled completely as no other venue is available. Because of this, the company investigated venues in Seville, but with the same result. Valencia is being mooted as another possible tour location. Beach Bars Reprieve? The Junta de Andalucía (governing body for Andalucía, and Almería) has embarked on the first stages of taking responsibility for the legality and placement of the estimated 2,000 beach bars in Andalucía (including Almería province). The regulation of these beach bars was until this year overseen by the coastal authority known as "Costas". Antonio Ávila told a meeting of beach bar owners in Málaga that the law was the law, but the Junta would work with a more favourable disposition, and attempt to solve any irregularities. 800 of the 2,000 beach bars are actually on the beach. Antonio thinks that at least 90% of the beach bars can be made completely legal. The beach bars generate a large amount of money for their owners, and council funds from taxes, and are seen as a major influence on tourism and a "trademark" of this area. Not Here! Neither Almería nor Alicante nor Murcia airports will be checking their outward passengers with the controversial "nude" body scanners. Neither will any other Spanish airport. The Spanish Minister of Transport, José Blanco, has stated that Spain is not going to introduce these scanners as Spain considers they are "not compatible with the freedom and privacy of the individual". José further stated that Spain did not believe they needed

Focus on Local News continued additional security equipment of this type, and would not consider introducing these scanners until there was an agreement between all the EU states. Almería airport has undergone major security improvements during 2009. Their luggage inspection system has x-ray machines, explosives sensors and computerized "dangerous object" recognition. The system can deal with 2,400 suitcases an hour, with luggage "tagged" in the 1st of 5 levels of inspection, automatically being sent to level 2. PIRACC The brainchild of dedicated computer experts, PIRACC has come into being to collect, repair and re-distribute computer products to deserving recipients. Based in Albox as part of the Albox Computer Club, the society is looking for sponsors to supply storage space, printing and publicity, and a workshop area. Another Mouth! The camels that have become a regular feature and tourist attraction on the Mojácar beaches near Marina de la Torre now have an extra member of their troupe. The female camel "Bayyana" gave birth to a female baby on January 12th, weighing 30 kilos. Initial problems with the mother's milk
were resolved by hand feeding with goat's milk. Ursula Schulz, owner of the troupe, stated that the new camel was totally unsteady on its large feet for the first few days, but is now progressing well. The camels of the 'Camellos de Almería S.L.' company that provide rides are all at least five years old, so the new offspring is being shown to the public, but will not be joining the normal working group just yet! Partners Register The Junta de Andalucía (governing body) encourages town halls in provinces such as Almería to form a register of same sex or opposite sex couples who have a steady relationship. 420 such couples registered in 2009. The register termed "Parejas de hecho", legally in force since 1996, establishes a formal relationship between the two partners who both sign. One partner must be on the "padrón", (the official register of residents or renters). Benefits of being on this register include the ability to apply for a council house, health benefits as a "family" (including children), application for residential care if the couple are elderly, and inheritance tax benefits, identical to married couples. Airport Problems Figures have been published regarding 2009 "profit and loss" calculations. Almería airport is amongst the 39 of the 48 airports in Spain that have made a loss, being nearly 8 million euros in the "red" after taking into account the major investment made. The overall placing is number 27 out of 48. San Javier (Murcia) made a profit. One of the problems is the lack of qualified air-traffic controllers. The report reveals that one of the 2,400 controllers in Spain was paid 900,000 euros in salary and overtime in 2009, including 700,000 euros for overtime! 713 of the 2,400 were paid between 360,000 and 540,000 euros. Partly as a result of such figures major re-structuring of the system is taking place, with control and responsibility for 49% of the costs being transferred to autonomous regions (Andalucía in

One of the plans for Almería airport and 11 others, with less than 50 flights a day, is that the super-expensive air traffic controllers are replaced with an automated system, controlled by an employee on a "normal" salary. An air-workers' union official has commented that whilst the existing 8 controllers in Almería airport are highly paid, they are also highly skilled! The San Javier (Murcia) airport is next to a military base and military controllers deal with tourist flights as well as their own. The average yearly salary of a military controller is quoted as about 20,000 euros, for a fully skilled military controller. Cruise Ship Traffic Almeriá Port Authority has announced that in 2010 they have confirmed arrivals of 55 cruise ships with over 53,000 passengers, an increase of 30% with respect to 2009. The port had been enlarged and modernised and Almería has become a regular stop-off point for cruise ships going on to Málaga, or coming from Génova or Lisbon. The average cruise ship brings 1,400 passengers and is 207 metres long. Most of the cruise ships discharge passengers from 9am until 5pm, and then travel on. The 'Aurora' will be a regular visitor and this cruise ship carries 1,900 passengers and almost as many crew. Almería tourist board has conducted surveys that show that many passengers have little idea what this region has to offer, and they intend to provide such information in the appropriate languages. During 2009 an information desk was opened up at the port each time a cruise ship arrived, and a market selling souvenirs and typical products of the region proved popular and cost effective. Price Increases January 1st is when increases regarding pensions and benefits take effect, but also when prices of services such as electricity, gas and transport costs are changed. 2009 has been a year when the cost of living index either fell or recorded miniscule rises. If you regularly travel on the Madrid
underground however, the cost of a 10-journey ticket has gone up by 22%! National train fares have gone up by between 4-6%. Electricity prices have gone up by about 2.6%, but not if you have a "night tariff" contract. Very low contract users of electricity have their prices frozen, and 'Telefónica' landline rental charges and natural gas prices have been frozen for 2010. A standard 12.5 kilo gas bottle has gone up to 11,05 euros, but this had previously come down from 13,50 euros last year. The cost of a postage stamp to Spanish addresses has gone up to 34 cents.
Not Again! The statue of John Lennon in Almería city was restored following vandalism and re-sited where it was considered there were more passers-by and a security camera. Despite this, the neck of his guitar was recently broken off by vandals, resulting in a further repair bill of probably 5,000 euros. The statue is in recognition of the composing of 'Strawberry Fields Forever' by John when he was in Almería filming 'How I Won the War.' Previous vandalism attacks included the painting of the statue in the Spanish football team colours when Spain was in the final of the 'Euro cup'. Copies of the security camera images, belonging to a private nearby business, have been requested.

Focus on Local News continued Rave CD The Jazz Guitarist Paco Rivas, from Almería, has just released his second CD with 10 tracks from famous Spanish composers including, Albéniz, Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Rodrigo. All the compositions are performed in a jazz style, stated to be "that of Andalucía". The CD is called "Bautizo con Manzanilla" (Baptised with herb-tea), the popular drink in many Spanish bars. The CD is being reviewed as being "superb" and "of outstanding importance". Paco Rivas has performed with many other musicians from Almería and formed his own 'Paco Rivas Quartet" in the 80's, and the 'Acoustic Soul Trio' in the 90's. His concerts all over Spain are usually sold out, and he is regularly featured on Spanish TV.
Not Since the Spanish Civil War Salt is not being collected and processed at the 'Las Salinas' salt flat site this year, the first time since the Spanish Civil War. The French company that owns the concession has decided that there is sufficient salt from the previous year, left in stock. The 'Las Salinas' area has 25 hectares of collection area and 250 hectares where the water evaporates, providing up to 25,000 tons of salt, graded according to the size. Normally the collection areas are opened up in September when the flooding of the salt water takes place. At the time of greatest production, up to 300 people worked and lived in this small area. There was a cinema, bars and the famous church, now on the
point of being restored. Millions of birds visit this area also. Ironically the recent sudden snow and ice in many European countries resulted in a tripling of sales. A boat ferried 500 tonnes to France, and the UK placed a large order. Vaccination Programme The Andalucian Spanish Health authorities are reminding parents that any girls born in 1996, so now aged 14 during 2010, are entitled to a 3 dose vaccination designed to prevent cancer of the uterus in later life. Some 3,500 girls are calculated to be eligible for the free vaccination as part of the national vaccine programme. The vaccine is known as "VPH" in Spanish and can be applied for at any health centre, or by appointment from 902 505 060, the Health Service Hotline telephone number. It is stated that 6 cases of cancer of the uterus are diagnosed in Spain every day, and 2 women die from this cancer. Was it You? Businesses in Roquetas organised a Christmas draw with a prize of an assortment of products worth 6,000 euros. The winner had to have the same winning ticket number as the winning number from the 'ONCE' lottery on January 4th, which resulted in the number 17756. So far the prize is unclaimed! The ticket with the winning number was obtained from the hairdressing salon 'Lauris', but not a lot else is known. The organisers state that if no prizewinner appears, the goods may be given to a charity organisation. The prizes and winning number are on display in the 'Carvajal' centre in the Plaza de la Constitución. 'Banco Santander' Benefits The Spanish banking giant 'Banco Santander' own 'Abbey,Alliance & Leicester' and 'Bradford & Bingley' in the UK. They have announced that UK card holders of these UK offshoots will not have to pay charges when using their cards in cash machines in Spain if they have current accounts in the UK with a balance of 1,000 pounds sterling (or more) per month. This will apply to 'Abbey' &

DVD of the Month The Time Traveller’s Wife
THOSE who take their love stories black, no sugar, will find this adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger's novel hard to stomach.This is the remarkable story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare's passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap. But it's sure to hit the spot for anyone with an appetite for sweet, unselfconscious romantic fantasy. The occasional gratuitous shot of Eric Bana in the buff will do nothing to harm The Time Traveller's Wife's chances at the box office, either. If the relationship between the film's two main characters hadn't been so well realised, and the dramatic tension so deftly handled, audiences would find it much harder to suspend their disbelief. After all, viewed from a distance, the story about a Chicago librarian who has a rare disorder that causes him to travel, involuntarily, through time is impossibly far fetched. But for those prepared to embrace it, the sci-fi scenario offers a new variation on the star-crossed lovers theme. Henry DeTamble's tendency to "disappear" at key moments in his life - such as the moment of impact in a car crash that kills his mother - has turned him into something of a loner. Until he meets Clare Abshire (Rachel McAdams), a beautiful young woman who has been dreaming about this very encounter for most of her life. A large part of the success of The Time Traveller's Wife can be attributed to McAdams, whose reputation as a class act is richly deserved. A full-bodied cappuccino romance.

Mains Gas The Spanish Minister for Industry has agreed to the construction of a major branch of the mains gas pipe passing through Almería province. The new supply will go from Huércal-Overa to Baza, a distance of 114 kilometres. It will pass through Zurgena, Partoloa, Arboleas, Cantoria, Fines, Serón, Tíjola and Olula del Río. It will provide mains gas to over 200 companies and a population of about 167,000. This new pipeline will be joined to the Almería pipeline that will carry the gas from Algería to other parts of Spain. It is being constructed as a priority with an anticipated completion date of early 2011. The main under-sea pipeline has been completed and tested several months ago, and final tests are being made at the reception site at El Perdigal beach near Almería portMartin .The Taylor link to Baza will be utilised by all the large marble and stone companies, who will probably take 80% of the gas available. The Almería group 'Coag' that represents 5,000 agriculture growers in Almería province has presented a "denuncia" (legal complaint) alleging fraud, concerning the French supermarket chain 'Carrefour'. They allege that green beans, a popular product, are being sold by the chain and labelled "1st category Spanish produce", when they are
in fact "2nd category from Morocco". They further allege that the "Spanish" label is placed over the "Morocco" label. Carrefour could be fined very heavily, but they have stated that their supplier committed this offence and they are taking action against them, and immediately withdrew from sale all the green beans affected! 'Coag' say that the supermarket chain is responsible for what they sell to the public, and this has been discovered in several 'Carrefour' supermarkets.
Not Just Locked Up Inmates at the 'El Acebuche' prison in Almería are encouraged to take part in courses designed to teach them skills such as metal work, carpentry, horticulture and computer skills. The prison has a fully equipped carpentry section that sells products such as doors and windows through a commercial outlet. Each course is run as a business, with business skills being taught as well. Apart from practical skills inmates can also learn Spanish, as 60% of the inmates are non-Spanish Nationalities, as well as general education. The aim of all these activities is to allow the prisoners to integrate and earn a living when released.

So Now You Know... Giraffes are Strange! The top of a giraffe's head when fully raised is about 18 feet from the ground. The blood has to be pumped up this far to stop them fainting. The heart of a giraffe weighs about 11 kilos, about 2.3% of their body weight. A human heart is only 0.5% of the human body weight. The tallest recorded giraffe was "George" who lived at Chester Zoo in the UK. He measured just less than 6 metres, or 20 feet when fully standing. He was so tall he licked telephone wires and caused several breakdowns until the staff realised he was the culprit! Their tongues are about 18 inches long and very flexible! Gladiators Gladiators that entertained the Roman crowds were very highly regarded. They were given sports drinks made from ground bone ash, as it was thought this improved the calcium in their own bones. Being rubbed down with onions was also a regular event, as onions were credited with having antiseptic and healing effects on wounds. Skilled surgeons operated in the event of an amputation or head wound. The most famous gladiators only fought 3 or 4 times a year and after 5 years they could buy their way out, often becoming trainers.
Other Famous Gordons Gordon Banks, the very famous goalkeeper played every game in the World Cup of 1966 when England won. He lost an eye in a car accident in 1972. Alexander Gordon announced the football results for the BBC for 35 years. His speech pattern was so admired that tapes of his football commentaries are used to teach English in Swedish Universities. General Gordon of Khartoum is unfortunately best remembered for losing his last battle, although he held out for 2 years. Alexander Gordon invented Gordon's Gin, still a secret recipe, shared by a maximum of 12 people at any one time.

Golf Stories Alan Shepard shot a golf ball into space from the moon in 1971. He claimed it had gone "miles and miles". Mathematicians later calculated that it probably travelled 200 to 300 yards before it fell back on the moon. Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin hit a golf ball from the International Space station in 2006 that should have travelled about 1 million miles. At some stage it burnt up in-flight as it re-entered the earth's atmosphere. Mount Merapi golf course in Indonesia has the 18th hole very close to the active volcano. The golfers watch closely and they close the course if a volcano event is predicted, such as happened in 2006! Seagulls People often say, "Look at those seagulls-so far inland!" But, "seagull" is a word that people use, when scientifically there is no such thing as a "seagull". There are many types of "gull" and some of them spend their whole lives inland, far from the sea. Expensive London restaurants charge up to four pounds sterling for a large gull egg, partly because they seem to be in decline. Gulls in the Galapagos Islands have enormous eyes, so they can see and catch squid at night! The squid come to the surface to feed on plankton.
Thomas Cook (1802-1892) 'General' Thomas Cook was originally a cabinetmaker apprentice and then a missionary. He organised holidays for thousand of people, but was very strict and became known as "The General". Cook also organised picnics where there was no beer except weak ginger beer. He organised a trip up Snowdon of 350 walkers and was the first "travel agent" to organise trips abroad. His skills were used to transport troops and supplies to soldiers during the siege of Khartoum. He decided tourists needed traveller's cheques, instead of cash when travelling and so he printed these travellers’ cheques that were known as "circular notes".

3 Years On - What Now?
T
he "Anti Tobacco Law" came into force in January 2006. A year later sales had fallen by 3% and 500,000 people had given up smoking. Then, in 2007, cigarette machines in bars and restaurants were fitted with an electronic lock that the staff had to activate to stop young people buying cigarettes. Just before Christmas, a new survey was published. This states that the number of people who smoke had gone up by just under 7%, with 30% of those people aged 16 or over.
At present a bar owner who has less than 100 m2 of public space, (not including toilets or the space behind the bar) can designate their bars smoking or non-smoking. A bar or restaurant over 100 m2 has to have a designated smoking area (if they want one!) with enclosed partitions and extraction equipment. Some 3% of large bar and restaurant owners have done this, at considerable expense; stated to be an average of 20,000 euros! Others have put up portable screens – not legal, or put smoking signs at one end of a large room, and non-smoking signs at the other end – not legal either! The Junta de Andalucía (Governing body for Almería province) have proposed that restaurants and hotels with fully legal areas under the 2006 rules be allowed to stay as now - with smokers, and be exempt.
The 2006 law prohibited smoking in a work place and enclosed public areas such as large shopping centres. This has been mostly successful unless all the people in a private office are smokers! This reverses the 2006 rules! Newsagents were complaining that not having cigarettes on sale resulted in trade falling off in general. Finally, in coming months, Spanish cigarette packs must have graphic pictures inside such as damaged lungs.

2009: Another Good Year
I

The Spanish RAC (RACE) claim that there are still 1,800 kilometres, about 12% of the total of all roads, where the risk of an accident is above average. Also, they claim there are 25 major "black spots" which make up 380 kilometres where accidents can almost be predicted, and 80% of
The Traffic Police will still be out this year, with more cars, more checks, and increased radar coverage. Hopefully road deaths and injuries will continue to fall, but the 'multas' (fines) certainly won't!

El Gordo - Did You Win?
T
he "El Gordo" (The fat one) lottery on December 22nd each year is the most popular in Spain. If you had a winning ticket number 78294, for which you paid 20 euros (plus commission?), then at 11.38am on December 22nd you became a winner of 300,000 euros. "El Gordo" is the 1st prize only. Another 1,949 people shared this first prize, all with the same number, as the tickets are sold in sheets of 10 with a special "sheet" number and there are 195 sheets. One ticket from a sheet of 10 costs 20 euros from an official lottery office, or 22 or 23 euros with commission if bought elsewhere. All the tickets with this number would have cost a total of 39,000 euros without commission. The lottery office "Number 146" in Madrid ordered the complete series and sold all their 1,950 tickets mainly to local customers. When it was payout time, the winners shared 585 million euros. A lot of Cava (Spanish champagne) was drunk from then on! The second prize was winning number 53152. Each sheet of ten tickets won 1 million euros, so 100,000 per "decimo". All the tickets with this number (1,950) were ordered by another lottery office just 15 kilometres from Madrid, so all their customers got 100,000 euros per ticket! People in Madrid also shared the third prize, with ticket Santa Justa station at Seville number 10104. A good day for Madrid!
Lottery Offices often "order" the same number each year. They don't have to order every single ticket, but many do. Some people choose a number that has special significance; their birth date or anniversary for example. The Spanish population are not averse to believing in reverse luck. This year many thousands wanted the number 25609 because it was the date Michael Jackson died! Another popular number was 16119, the date when the Spanish fishing boat "El Alakrana" and their
crew, captured by Somalia pirates were released. You surf the Internet to find out which lottery office has the number you want, and go there, or buy on-line. The total number of tickets for sale each year amount to 3,315 million euros. Not all of them are bought, but 70% of this money is distributed in prizes. The other 30% is for the printing, distribution and other expenses with the rest going to the Spanish Treasury. The "El Gordo" tickets sold by the A.C.E.M. Mojรกcar Business Association (see local news) ended with the numbers "50". If they had been "52", every purchaser would have won 1,000 euros, as these were the last two numbers of the second major prize! The first "El Gordo" lottery was held in 1812. Tickets cost 200 pesetas by 1950. With the 'Euro', the price became 20 euros. So should you rush to buy one next year? The odds are not good! The Spanish newspaper 'El Mundo' published their calculated odds of winning last December 22nd. The chance of winning the "Gordo", 300,000 euros first prize was given as 1 in 31.6 million! They put as a footnote that the chance of being canonized and made a saint was 1 in 20 million! (They didn't state whether this was worldwide, or just a Spanish saint). The Madrid people who did win first and second prizes were mostly ordinary workers, many of them unemployed, or suffering from the credit crunch!

Eduardo Santillana, a native of Lima, exhibits 33 black & white photographs, entitled "La Forma del Tiempo". His unretouched photographs are intended to be "A snapshot in time" and include photographs taken in an Almería lighthouse and plastic greenhouses. He has won many awards. This was easily dealt with, but on his return to his car he was horrified to see a very large black man on his car bonnet, jumping up and down. Darren panicked, clicked on his radio and screamed, "Darren to Control! There is a f‌‌ black bastard dancing up and down on top of my squad car, and‌.". He got no further because control cut him off and replied, " Control to 746, you cannot possibly use language like this over a police radio! Make your report in the approved manner!" After a few seconds of thought, PC 746 replied, "Zulu Tango on the Sierra!"
"Lord, if you can't make me skinny and I get chocolates again, at least make all of my friends fat!" Wally's Wedding Night At 85 years of age, Wally married Anne, a lovely 25 year old. Since her new husband is so old, Anne decides that after their wedding she and Wally should have separate bedrooms because she is concerned that her new but aged husband may over exert himself if they spend the entire night together. After the wedding festivities Anne prepares herself for bed and the expected 'knock' on the door. Sure enough the knock comes, the door opens and there is Wally, her 85 year old groom, ready for action. They unite as one. All goes well, Wally takes leave of his bride, and she prepares to go to sleep. After a few minutes, Anne hears another knock on her bedroom door, and it's Wally. Again he is ready for more 'action.' Somewhat surprised, Anne consents for more coupling. When the newlyweds are done, Wally kisses his bride, bids her a fond goodnight and leaves. She is set to go to sleep again, but, aha you guessed it..... Wally is back again, rapping on the door, and is as fresh as a 25-year-old, ready for more 'action.' And, once again they enjoy each other. But as Wally gets set to leave again, his young bride says to him, 'I am thoroughly impressed that at your age you can perform so well and so often. I have been with guys less than a third of your age who were only good once. You are truly a great lover, Wally.' Wally, somewhat embarrassed, turns to Anne and says: ....... 'You mean I've been here already?' So don't be afraid of getting old, senior moments have their advantages!
Deductions A teacher had told her pupils the date of her birthday. On the day, three young boys take presents into their class and give them to this young female teacher. The teacher knows that the father of the first pupil to give her a present owns a hand-made chocolate business. She therefore shakes the box against her ear and decides it is chocolates. She thanks the boy and tells him she will open it later. The second present she is given is in a long box. She smells it, as she knows his father owns a flower shop. She thanks this boy and again says she will open her present later. The last boy gives her quite a heavy wooden box with some liquid oozing out of the corner. She knows that his father runs a wine store, so she wipes her finger on the liquid and tastes it. Smiling, she says she will open the present later. The third boy is a bit agitated and tells her she should open the present straightaway. The teacher says, "I like wine and the taste is very unusual, although the box appears to be leaking slightly". The boy replies, "It's not wine, it's a puppy!"

She's Alive! A noted criminal defence lawyer was making his closing argument for his client accused of murder, although the body of the victim had never been found. The lawyer dramatically turned to the courtroom's clock and, pointing to it, announced, "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I have some astounding news. I have found the supposed victim of this murder to be alive! In just ten seconds, she will walk through the door of this courtroom." A heavy quiet suddenly fell over the courtroom as everyone waited for the dramatic entry. But nothing happened. The smirking lawyer continued, "The mere fact that you were watching the door, expecting the victim to walk into this courtroom, is clear proof that you have far more than even a reasonable doubt as to whether a murder was actually committed." Tickled with the impact of his cleverness, the cocky lawyer confidently sat down to await acquittal. The jury was instructed, filed out, and filed back in just ten minutes with a guilty verdict. When the judge brought the proceedings to an end, the dismayed lawyer chased after the jury foreman: "Guilty? How could you convict? You were all watching the door!" "Well," the foreman explained, "Most of us were watching the door. But one of us was watching the defendant, and he wasn't watching the door."

A farmer with a farm shop was working one afternoon when a flash Range Rover with all the extras zoomed into his yard and braked hard. The driver got out, came in the shop and bought a large amount of organic items, including a dozen freerange eggs. He paid with his credit card and just as he was about to leave he said to the farmer," Oh‌ four of your free range hens have stopped laying." The farmer asked, "How on earth can you know that?" The customer replied, "I ran them over on the way in!"
Cyanide A nice, calm and respectable lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes, and said, "I would like to buy some cyanide." The pharmacist asked, "Why in the world do you need cyanide?" The lady replied, "I need it to poison my husband." The pharmacist's eyes got big and he explained, "Lord have mercy! I can't give you cyanide to kill your husband, that’s against the law. I'll lose my licence! They'll throw both of us in jail! All kinds of bad things will happen. Absolutely not! You CANNOT have any cyanide!" The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist's wife. The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, "You didn't tell me you had a prescription."
