Units in Almería and France broke up a gang using high speed luxury cars travelling at speeds of up to 200kms/hr, to transport drugs via the Spanish and French motorways. The operation to capture this gang was consequently given the name “Go Fast routier” by the French authorities, and “Go Fast- Gascón” in Spain.

This is taken to Granada for initial sorting by a German company and items that can be re-used are distributed to needy countries. 485 litres of used cooking oil was also collected in the same period and 66 tons of glass and bottles were taken away in the last 12 months. Commercial Rents With many businesses feeling the pinch at present, fears are being expressed as to what will happen in January 2015. In 1994, a national law relating to commercial premises throughout Spain, froze rents except for cost of living increase, for businesses who had rented premises before 1985. The period that applied was for twenty years from 1994, so until 2014. Many traditional businesses including hotels and restaurants expect to have their rents increased. Some organizations and businesses are hoping that the increases will be sensible, as they have been paying rent regularly since1985 but others are worried that they may have to move premises. No exact figures are available for Almería province but an estimate of 15% of all businesses is considered likely.

IKEA Visitors

The IKEA stores in Murcia and Málaga, the two nearest to Almería, have been asking every customer for their post code. This gives them an idea as to where their clients come from. Although the Murcia store is an average of 222 kms away from residents here, 3% of shoppers make the journey every day, amounting to 300 customers from Almería province. Shoppers from Valencia make up 9% of their clients and from Alicante some 22%. Since the Murcia IKEA store was opened in 2006 they have received 23 million customers. Focus on Local News Bárbara chapel possibly goes back to the 13th century and has been undergoing a restoration project. A plaster ceiling was put in over the altar after the Spanish Civil War, and was partially opened up in late July to repair the roof. Local historians who wished to take photographs climbed into the roof space and were amazed to find painted frescos. These may well be a continuation of ones lower down, also covered up. Experts brought in confirmed the frescos to be of major historical importance. In September a full investigation of the extent of discovery will be carried out in the chapel. Other similar Moorish architecture already exists in Huércal-Overa, of a similar period, including the castle that is believed also to date back to the 13th century.

This is considered partly due to the large number of second homes in the province, and also that in the economic situation at present more “amateur” burglars now exist who choose victims in the same vicinity as where they live. Advice to homeowners is to be more vigilant, security conscious and careful who they let into their homes. Street crime has also gone down, attributed to a greater police presence, particularly in shopping centres and malls.

New Pipeline Work started in late July to repair the pipelines known as the Tajo-Segura and Negratin-Almanzora that were badly damaged in the September floods last year. This pipeline brings water to the Cuevas dam location and is an alternative supply to the Carboneras desalination water and the water from the Cuevas reservoir that was declared unfit to drink recently. A total of 19 kms of pipes will be installed and connected up. The largest sections of pipe have a diameter of 1.6 metres and are capable of delivering 276 million litres of water per day. The water obtained will be used not only for irrigation use, but also for domestic use after treatment at the Bajo Almanzora treatment plant. Domestic water obtained is enough for a population of 150,000 persons. Irrigation water will be available to serve the 24,000 hectares of land that is cultivated in the immediate area.

Less Crime Crime statistics are published every 3 months and Almería province now has the best reductions in Andalucía. Figures for the end of July show that overall offences have gone down by 7% with respect to 2012. Detection and consequent court appearances have also increased to 46%. Vehicle robberies have gone down 24%, domestic violence by 18%, and drug related offences by 12%. More efficient policing and the formation of specialist groups are given as the reason. Forced entry and theft to properties show the only slight increase.

4m long dead fish

Unknown Species An enormous dead 4 metre long “fish” was recently discovered in the sea at Villaricos. The local Civil Protection team brought it onto the beach and members from ‘Promar’ who specialize in fish and marine biology preservation were summoned. The advanced state of decomposition was a handicap to deciding exactly what this marine creature was, and nothing similar has ever been seen in the region. Photographs were taken and sent to other marine experts to see if they had any idea what it was. A possible DNA test on bone material may have revealed more, but the cost of such a test is very expensive, and no-one knew who would pay for this. Many people, particularly fishermen, thought that it might be a decomposed thresher shark, also known as a fox fish -“Peje Zorro” in Spanish. Thresher sharks are encountered in the Mediterranean Sea but usually nearer to Malaga than Almería. One suggestion that it might be a rare Oarfish was considered unlikely.

The number of cars, vans, and heavy vehicles on major roads in Almería province has fallen by 5% with respect to last year. This follows a 3% drop in 2012, and since 2008 the reduced traffic amounts to 18%. In other areas falls in traffic density relate to improved alternative means of transport, as well as reduced car journeys owing to the economic situation. Now that the Alicante “AVE” (High speed train) link to Madrid has been inaugurated this is expected to reduce road traffic by 2 million journeys a year. With the additional work on the Murcia-Almería “AVE” line possibly postponed to 2018-2020, there will be no similar drop in traffic numbers in the Almería province from this line.

Real Money Now that the U.D. Almería football team is back in the first division, large amounts of money should follow. Estimates put this as between 20 & 25 million euros. 60% of this will come from television fees with other amounts from ticket sales, hotel bills for visiting fans of other teams, the teams themselves, and money spent on food and drink. Season tickets are available from a starting price of 200 euros, considered by fans to be very reasonable. The income for the Spanish first division as a whole is put at 1,800 million euros, the third largest amount in Europe. Sports economists state that the very fact that a football club is in the first division improves the image of a city, and monetary gain follows. Increased Sales The exportation of horticultural products from Almería province is one of the most important export markets. Vigorous marketing and stands at dedicated trade fairs is paying off. Vegetable exports to Germany have doubled in the first 6 months of 2013, to a total of 290 million kilos, to a value of 320 million euros. This follows a major stand from Almería vegetable and fruit producers in the annual important trade fair in Berlin. Exports to France account for sales of 160 million euros, followed by sales to the Low Countries, the UK and Italy. Total sales worldwide relate to over 1 million tonnes, and include exports to Iceland, Malta, Arab Emirates and Qatar. Fruit sales have also brought in 97 million euros. Cutting edge technology and continued research into the best growing systems ensures that fruit and vegetable sales from Almería province are increasing dramatically.

Almería Short Films Festival This internationally famous film competition will take place in early December, as in previous years. Total prize money of 20,000 euros is spread over 12 categories. All submissions must have been made during 2013 and be of less than 30 minutes duration. A final 30 submissions will go forward for inclusion in the competition that last year attracted over 1,000 entries, with 600 from Spain. The closing date for entries is September 17th.

Focus on Local News continued Terraza Carmona Death

Petrol & Diesel

Antonio Carmona, the driving force behind the famous gastronomy at the Terraza Carmona hotel and restaurant in Vera, has died aged 72. Apart from building up the 3* hotel, Antonio gradually made the restaurant into the focal point for gastronomy, not just locally but also internationally. Many national and international awards have been received and his regular invitations to other leading chefs to take part in gastronomy events ensured that the reputation for superb cuisine was maintained. Many “forgotten” traditional local dishes were researched and introduced back into the menus.

Spanish authorities concerned with competitive pricing and the investigation of cartels, who they allege fix prices, have opened investigations into petrol and diesel prices. Repsol, Cepsa, Disa, Meroil and Galp are being investigated for anti-competition allegations as regards pricing and commercial practices. A further investigation concerns Repsol, Cepsa and BP who are alleged to have together fixed petrol and diesel pump costs at their respective outlets. The Spanish department of industry has complained for some time that they considered the profit margins obtained by petrol and diesel suppliers to be excessive. At the end of May, investigators raided the head offices of various companies and the Spanish Association of Petroleum Products. Repsol and Cepsa have denied any wrong doing or anti-competitive practices. A maximum period of 18 months has been set for the investigation and rulings. Following similar investigations in other industries, very large fines have been handed down if the allegations were proved correct.

Villaricos “Dreambeach” Festival The “Dreambeach” 2013 music festival, said to be the first of several, was hailed by the organizers as a great success. Nearly 100 groups and artists used 7 stages to perform to a combined audience of 60,000 over the 2 day event. The production team stated that 75% of the providers of goods and services had come from Almería province, as had 60% of the 1,000 employees contracted for a variety of work. In contrast, an association of residents named “Those affected by the Dreambeach Villaricos Festival”, called for all the local town halls to ban any further event of this type. They claimed there were large illegal “botellones” (street drinking parties), severe vandalism to urban furniture such as rubbish containers, and general vandalism in the surrounding housing complexes. They also claimed that the fencing round 2 pools had been broken down for nocturnal bathing. They further complained that apartments rented by the organizers for staff had as many as 40 people in two-bedroom apartments.

Ecologist Fears The Spanish Ministry of Industry is proposing to license to interested companies the seismic exploration of available petroleum products on the sea bed off the Almeria and Malaga coast. Ecology groups are up in arms about this exploratory work that could lead to offshore rigs being used if the resources discovered are sufficiently large. They consider that the rich marine life will be affected, not only fishing stocks, but other species such as turtles. The areas where the testing of suitable reserves will take place comprise a total of 1,500 sq kms.

Focus on Local News continued More Cantoria Scandal Pedro Llamas, the ex-mayor of Cantoria, resigned under pressure at the end of May after the Tribunal of Andalucía confirmed a prison term and ban from holding office for 23 months. He was confirmed as being guilty after the appeal, of “blatantly” forging council documents that approved water and electricity supplies to four illegal houses. Although he stated at the time he would resign as a councilor as well, he did not do this. He therefore continues to receive a salary of 3,500 euros per month, but this is the salary he received when he was mayor. Opposition councillors consider that although another appeal has been made against his conviction, he should be forced to resign as a councillor as well. Other council members receive considerably less money and the new mayor who took office on July 1st is only asking for a salary of 781 euros per month.

One of the Heroes A National policeman stationed at Roquetas was one of the first people who went to the aid of the injured at the terrible train crash in Galicia at Agrois. He was on holiday at the time visiting his sister who lives 100 metres from the crash site. Rubén Castro at first thought that a bomb had gone off but quickly realized what had happened. Together with his nephew, an off duty Guardia Civil policeman, they went immediately to help out. Rubén rang the National police headquarters to tell them the full extent of the accident, that at that stage they had not appreciated. He rescued an 11 year old girl who had two broken legs, along with other injured people, and stayed at the scene until 2am. The next day he met the girl’s family at the hospital and promised to stay in touch. Rubén told reporters from the Almería newspaper ‘Ideal’ that he had previously seen various dead persons, but nothing on such a horrendous scale. Friends from Roquetas who knew he was visiting his sister, recognized him from TV images transmitted from the scene and alerted the newspaper.

The two companies have paid 394 million pounds sterling, some 500 million euros. Luton airport currently handls just under 10 million passengers a year, making it the 4th largest airport in the UK. ‘Albertis’ is slimming down their involvement in airport concessions and have sold their 33% stake in a Columbian airport to ‘AENA’ as well.

“Dreambeach” Accident Very unfortunately, a young woman suffered serious head injuries when she fell down a 6 metre drop on the Friday night. Along with friends, she was walking along the side of the riverbed mouth opposite the festival grounds, trying to reach the campsite. This access has been shut because of a landside since the floods last September and a mound of earth blocked the entrance to vehicle traffic. The mayor of Cuevas stated he was horrified to hear of the accident, but signs and illumination marked the proper access to the campsite, as well as free bus transport laid on by the organizers. This road alongside the river bed is administered by the Spanish state water authority and as such is not the responsibility of the Cuevas council, nor the Junta de Andalucía.

It will then need some weeks to fine tune the orbit alignment, test and put in use. The Astra 2G, the third of these replacement satellites will be launched some time in 2014. The type of Russian rockets being used has had various launch or flight problems in the past. Each Astra satellite costs 300 million dollars to build.

Hospital School

“All Inclusive” promotions by many hotels. Hotels say that they are forced to respond to tourists who want this type of accommodation, particularly cashstrapped Spanish nationals. They sympathize with the related businesses that complain that this cuts down their income to a major degree, but claim they have little choice, in order to compete with other hotels. One company offering water and sea events concluded that July was “terrible” as the hotel guests went to the beach, spent nothing on pleasure activities, nor food and drink, before returning to the hotels and staying there. They claimed that August was slightly better but not much!

Any child who is admitted to hospital in Almería province can still continue to receive education. Teachers in the hospitals of Torrecárdenas (Almería), La Immaculada (Huércal-Overa) and Poniente (El Ejido) provided this service to 2,000 pupils in the school year 2012-2013. The object is to minimize the problems caused by absence from school and also give the children a break from their normal hospitalization. Young patients can learn or improve computer skills and keep pace with pupils in their normal school. Fun activities and basic education is provided for the very young. The classrooms are open from 9am-2pm, Mondays to Fridays, but at weekends, fiesta days or holiday periods, volunteers from the Red Cross or other bodies provide alternative activities.

Roquetas “IBI”

Most residents and business owners in this region consider they are paying too much rates, known as “IBI”. Councillors in Roquetas claim that their rates amounts are the highest in Andalucía with the exception of Marbella. Rates in Spain are set with reference to a rateable value, “valor catastral” that is listed in each municipality for every property. The complaint in Roquetas is that in many cases these figures are the same, or higher, than the property value on the open market. They are asking for a complete review of all the values, and amendments where they are wrong anyway.

The filming of “Lawrence of Arabia” 50 years ago has been remembered with the unveiling of a bronze sculpture in Carboneras. The town was transformed to depict the Arabian port of Akaba during the filming and a large number of local people became extras. Last December, Omar Sharif was invited back to Almería to honour the anniversary of the making of the film, and also visited Carboneras, as part of the 2012 Almería film festival. The life-size statue was sculpted by Carmen Mudarra and paid for by the company Biofuel Systems who operate from Carboneras. Focus on Local News continued Huércal-Overa Graffiti The Huércal-Overa cultural department has announced that for the second year running they will organize a graffiti competition designed to brighten up the town. Individuals or a maximum of 3 persons can send in their details with written parental permission if they are under 18 years of age. They have to send in photographs of previous works of this nature and an A3 design for this competition from September 1st-20th. A jury will decide on the winning submissions. The actual event is on October 6th between 11am & 7pm after the graffiti artists have been allocated a particular spot in the town for their design. A first prize of 700 euros is on offer, with a second prize of 300 euros. The competition last year was considered a huge success. Modules for lifesaving equipment and toilet blocks on the beach area of Mojácar were recently decorated by a well known graffiti artist from Almería city.

Following this the Guinness committee decided that the event was valid, and that the claim of 729 people taking part was also sufficiently documented.

Tele-Sales The ‘phone and ‘ADSL’ companies, Movistar, Vodafone, Orange, Jazztel, Ono and Yoiga now have more restricted hours when they are allowed to carry out telephone sales calls. During weekday,s these types of calls can only be made between 10am and 8.30pm, and on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. Many people consider that these “cold” selling calls are a considerable inconvenience, particularly if they have entered into contracts that tie them to a particular company for a specified period. Most calls are initiated by a computer, and sales staff take over only if the call is answered. Consumer organizations still think this reduction in hours is not enough.

‘Guinness’ Says “No”, then “Yes” The Guinness Book of Records committee initially turned down the attempt by over 700 nudists at Vera playa to beat the previous record of the largest number of nudists in the sea at any one time, in the “skinny-dipping” category. Organizers of the event on July 21st considered that they had complied with all the requirements, and submitted videos that proved their case. Amongst other technicalities the Guinness judges did not consider that all the entrants had stayed in the sea for the duration of 5 minutes at one time. Quenton Muslow who organized the

Blood, Plasma and Bone Marrow Up to the end of June, 11,000 donations of blood, plasma and bone marrow were made in Almería province. 9,000 donors volunteered, just over 1,000 more than in 2012. This covers all the anticipated demand throughout the region. Aref Laarej, in charge of the transfusion centre for the province, states that the response of the donors means that no hospital patient will be short of blood or plasma needed. Bone marrow donations have totalled 240 in this period, an increase of 100% over 2012. These donations have to be matched to a particular recipient and are therefore entered on a national and international register. The more donations of bone marrow that are available, the more chances there are of a match. Many donors come to the mobile units that tour the province regularly. A new series of location dates and times for the mobile units will be announced in October. Following the terrible train crash recently in Galicia an appeal went out for blood and plasma donations, and the hospitals were swamped with volunteers. Donors queued for hours, despite the large numbers of medical staff that had been drafted in.

So Now You Know... Weather Balloons In 1896, a French weather scientist named Leon Teisserenc de Bort built and launched the world's first tethered weather balloons using hydrogen to set them aloft. They were very large in order to hold enough gas to carry their measuring instruments including thermometers, barometers to measure atmospheric pressure, and hygrometers to record the level of moisture or humidity. Typical modern balloons work by transmitting weather data back to Earth using a device called a radiosonde. Some are designed to travel for long distances and for many months, while others release their radiosonde devices back to Earth via a parachute at the right altitude. Satellites The world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, a 58cm metal sphere with 4 radio antennae, was launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. Since then, thousands of satellites have been launched into orbit around the Earth. Satellites are used for a large number of purposes. Common types include satellites for military and civilian Earth observation, weather, communications, navigation, and research. Satellite orbits vary greatly, depending on their purpose. There are now around 8,300 in space, but about 3,000 are not operational having lived out their useful life and are now just part of the space debris. Some satellites, notably space stations, are launched in parts and assembled in orbit. Fish & Chip Shops Fish and chips became a regular meal among the working classes in the second half of the 19th century. Trawl fishing in the North Sea and the development of railways meant that fresh fish could be rapidly transported to the heavily populated areas. In 1860, the first fish and chip shop was opened in London by Joseph Malin. Early fish-andchip shops had only very basic facilities. Usually these consisted principally of a large cauldron of cooking fat, heated by a coal fire. During World War II, fish and chips remained one of the few foods in the United Kingdom not subject to rationing. The development of the modern fish-and-chip shop or "chippy" was unique to the UK.

Aspirin Aspirin is a derivative of salicylic acid found in the bark of willow trees, developed to be a mild analgesic useful in the relief of headache and muscle and joint aches by de-sensitizing nerve endings. Salicylic acid on its own causes stomach problems but in 1897, scientists at the German drug firm ‘Bayer’ found how to modify it. By 1899, Bayer had dubbed this drug ‘Aspirin’ (a trade name), and was selling it world wide. The use of aspirin was reduced after the marketing of ‘paracetamol’ and ‘ibuprofen’, but clinical trials in the 1980s established aspirin's use as an anti-clotting agent that reduces the risks of heart attacks and strokes. This revealed a new use for the common aspirin. Instant Coffee “Instant” or “soluble” coffee was invented and patented in 1890 by Mr David Strang of Invercargill, New Zealand, and sold under the trade name “Strang's Coffee”. Satori Kato, a Japanese scientist working in Chicago in 1901, modified the manufacturing process and introduced it into the US. The ‘Nescafé’ brand, which used a more advanced coffee refining process, was launched in 1938. Highvacuum freeze-dried coffee was developed shortly after World War II as an indirect result of wartime research into other areas. Apart from making “quick” coffee, instant coffee gives manufacturers lower shipping weight and volume than beans or ground coffee, saving costs. Marmite In the late 19th Century a German scientist discovered that brewer’s yeast could be eaten in a concentrated form. In 1902, the ‘Marmite Food Extract Company’ was formed in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire in a custom built factory, using yeast from the Bass Brewery. The product took its name from the "marmite”, a French term for a large, covered earthenware or metal cooking pot. Labels of the UK product still carry the image of a marmite. By 1907, the wide acceptance of the product warranted the construction of a second factory at Camberwell green in London. During World War l British troops were issued with Marmite as part of their rations because of the high salt content.

New Traffic Laws

Did They Come Here?

igures for tourism in Spain reached record levels in the first six months of this year and continued to improve in July and August. Nationwide figures up to the end of June showed that 34 million tourists came to Spain, a number that even surpassed the same period in 2008, the previous record. In Almería province, 166,000 tourists came here in July, some 8% up on 2012. Whilst the majority stayed in hotels, rural tourism showed an increase of more than 8,000 non-Spanish guests, an amazing 30% increase from 2012. The average stay was for 5 nights, again more than last year and the daily expenditure rose as well. UK visitors spent 4% more and the French tourists some 10% more. Almería airport saw 92,000 incoming passengers in July, well above the previous numbers, and hotels were full to 70% capacity. Various reasons are given for this increase. One of the reasons given for UK tourists is the very poor English weather in the first part of this year, coupled with some improvement in spending power. Many rental companies received late bookings as the year progressed. Weather patterns in the UK seem to be very different every year and holidays within the UK are becoming a question of “Shall we risk it?” Pictures of holiday makers in the UK watching the rain come down, often starkly contrast with the previous year when beaches were having a rush of sun burnt visitors. This year the political unrest or civil war in countries such as Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey has meant that many UK tourists decided against these destinations to start with, or then found that tour operators were advising against taking holidays that had already been booked. A holiday in Spain was a tried and tested alternative for many people, who had initially wished to be more adventurous. This also applied to tourists from France, Germany, Belgium and Holland. Apart from Spain having become an alternative destination this year for many tourists, Spanish

tourism promotion and attendance at international fairs is paying off. Our own Almería tourist board has dramatically increased their professionalism, exposure, and multi-language offerings. Recently, a visit was made to a large bird watching weekend at Rutland water, pointing out the wide range of birdlife in this region. The large increase in rural tourism is a direct result of information being provided for an alternative to “sun and sea” holidays. Individual town halls are also using the latest internet resources to promote their municipality and surrounding attractions.

Family tourism is preferable

Although not finally collated, August will go down as another record month. Hotel occupancy was 8595% in the larger coastal resorts, with Mojácar achieving 85%, and Vera more than 80%. Spanish tourists coming to Almería have fallen off dramatically with the economic squeeze, but even they increased their visits by 3% from 2012. So did the tourists come to this Levante region? Obviously they did, but one fly in the ointment for restaurants, bars and other leisure pursuits this year was the “All inclusive” offers from many hotels. Amongst other municipalities, the mayoress of Mojácar is insistent that family tourism has to be improved. She is very unhappy with the offers, particularly for young age groups, where the most money seems to be spent on food and drink from supermarkets. Unfortunately, having given permission for the hotels to be built, it is difficult to persuade the owners not to compete and discontinue their cheap deals. Hotels say they are only catering for this modern trend, and if they don’t offer such deals they will go bust!

Refund.me

et up just over twelve months ago, an Internet company called Refund.me, based in Germany, has revolutionized the often lengthy procedure for compensation if an airline passenger is held up at departure, has a flight cancelled, is diverted, or misses a connection for more than three hours in each case.

boarding passes are a big help. All these details are automatically processed by a very sophisticated computer system known as “Advanced Business Logic (ABL)”. Once a valid claim is recognized the EU claim form is automatically generated and submitted to the appropriate airline. An app for smart ‘phones to submit details can also be used, and this has won an award from “Top Sabre Red Under EU law and the directive EU261/2004, Appy Awards”. compensation for delays is available for any flight that takes off from an EU airport, or any incoming flight where the airline is based in the EU. Since this directive came into force, airline passengers can personally make a claim for monetary compensation starting with a claim against the airline. If this does not work, various bodies such as ‘AENA’ in Spain or the ‘CAA’ in the UK, responsible for commercial flights can be approached. This often takes a long time, and many passengers who have a valid claim decide it is too complicated, don’t know the various conditions, or their rights. Only 1% of flights suffer a delay of more than three hours, but this still means that millions of passengers are affected, and monetary compensation also runs into millions. Summer months are always the worst because of the very large numbers of flights. Taking Spain as an example, some 42% of all flights occur during the summer and the money that could be claimed for delays is calculated to be 60 million euros. The airport with the greatest number of delays, and therefore potential claims, is Frankfurt, followed by the three UK airports at Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted. Sheer numbers of flights put them in this league table. The EU directive has compensation levels set at 250 euros (or equivalent) for flights up to 1,500 kms in distance. From 1,500 to 3,500 kms it is 400 euros, and over 3,500 kms some 600 euros. In Spain, claims can be made up to 24 months after the event but in the UK it is 6 years; if you can remember what happened that long ago! At refund.me a passenger with a claim can go online, register their claim with details of the flight and times, and personal details. Documents such as

Initially, Refund.me charged 25% (plus the appropriate VAT or IVA) on a no-win, no-fee basis, of the amount paid out. From July this year, coinciding with their first anniversary, they have reduced this commission to 15%. They say that over 90% of valid claims result in compensation, and the time it takes is generally between two and four months. Some delays are not covered under the EU directive. These include adverse weather conditions, flights delayed by political unrest or war, or mechanical breakdowns unless they could have been prevented by good maintenance, along with third party strikes at airports. Details of all these special delays for flights are in the “cloud” computer system at Refund.me. At present they cover 238 airports and 121 airline companies. Eve Buechner, a former German TV host started up Refund.me having had first hand experience of the hurdles in the way of personal claims. Train, ship and bus delays are also covered, but the conditions here are quite different. Help with loss of luggage claims will follow shortly.

The Less Fortunate Hopefuls

Casting sessions for extras here were scheduled for Macael (filming to be in the marble and stone quarries), Pechina, not far from another location in the rugged and barren Sierra Alhamilla National park, Mojácar, Almería city, Roquetas and El Ejido. Unfortunately, lack of precise information from the casting company, ‘Babieca Films’, coupled with wrong information from the press and many social networking sites, led to confusion and intense disappointment for aspiring extras. The number required was first given as 7,000 and then 2,000 plus. A popular employment website still announced “7,000 extras needed” throughout the castings. In fact, these numbers actually related to the national and Almería pre-selected “pool” to be later cut down to a total of 400-500 people here. ‘Babieca Films’ started off asking for “people of all ages”. Just before casting this became children up to 12 yrs of age and adults from 18 to 60yrs; then child age amended to 4-12 yrs. A later special casting for children in Almería city went back to 1-12 yrs. All applicants had to be of African, Arab or European origin, but thin and of dark complexion, to portray the underfed slaves of the period. 1,500 people turned up at Macael, but many had come from places such as Fuengirola, Alicante, Lorca, Granada and Madrid. It was then made clear that only people from Almería province were eligible. The Pechina (population 3,500) casting degenerated into chaos. Nearly 5,000 people came, some from all over Spain, totally packing the small square and streets in a heat of 40 degrees. Three young women fainted, and one had to be passed over the heads of the crowd. Pilar Moya in charge of casting commandeered a megaphone, telling the crowd “We are looking for thin people! Fat children, fat

The Almería city casting was much better, with more casting staff, security guards, police, civil protection crews and an ambulance. Nearly 10,000 people lined up, and at the first entrance were curtly told “You yes! You no!” The Mojácar casting at Tito’s beach bar was cancelled, but unofficially took place with 200 turning up. 8,000 went to Roquetas and the El Ejido castings attracted another 8-9000. There was considerable anger and discontent in El Ejido when ‘Babieca Films’ closed their doors at 5.30pm, so as to get away by 6pm, having previously advertised the finish as 8pm. The lure of 80 euros pay per day could not be ignored by the unemployed. A husband and wife and brother queued for 48 hrs in Roquetas, convinced they were suitable, only to be all told “You no!” There were thousands of similar stories at every casting, from the rejected and dejected. The ones pre-selected are waiting for the promised, “We’ll call you!”, but hordes won’t go through. Finalists have an expected 7-10 days of filming needing extras in October or November. Ridley Scott has to get his skates on; the premier is set for December 12th, 2014. Let’s hope the filming using the extras will be better organized.

What’s On Miscellaneous Almería Short Films Festival This internationally famous film competition will take place in early December, as in previous years. Total prize money of 20,000 euros is spread over 12 categories. All submissions must have been made during 2013 and be of less than 30 minutes duration. A final 30 submissions will go forward for inclusion in the competition that last year attracted over 1,000 entries, with 600 from Spain. The closing date for entries is September 17th. Spanish & English Huércal-Overa is holding a joint Spanish & English event on September 14th. The aim is to integrate the two nationalities with culture, music, gastronomy and customs from both sides. Various associations are helping to organize the events and the English population of 2,000 people is invited to join in. The jury was out an entire week and returned with a verdict of manslaughter. After the trial, the brother went to the redneck's house, told him what a great job he had done and paid him the $10,000. The Tailgater Golden Wedding With a couple celebrating their 50th anniversary at the church, the minister asked Brother Ralph to take a few minutes and share some insight into how he managed to live with the same woman all these years. The husband shyly stood and turned to the audience: "Well, I treated her with respect, spent money on her, but mostly I took her travelling on special occasions." A man was being tailgated by a stressed-out woman on a busy boulevard. Suddenly, the light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating woman hit the roof -- and the horn -and screamed in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection on his tail. She was still in mid-rant when she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a cell. After a couple of hours, a jailer approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. "I'm very sorry for the mistake," he tells her. "You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping the guy off in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. "I noticed the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'What Would Jesus Do?' bumper sticker, the 'Follow Me to Sunday School' bumper sticker, and the chromeplated Christian fish emblem on the trunk. So naturally, I assumed you had stolen the car."
