It’s Autumn Time

he end of Sep tember this year was not a repeat of the 2007, 2008 and 2009 deluges. Clear skies and mid t o high temperatures were the order of the day. Less tourists, but room to park in the coastal areas, and reduced gridlocks on many roads.

Hispanic Day. October 12th is also the Saint’s day of “Nuestra Señora del Pílar” (Mary, Virgin of the Pillar). It has also been moved from the ‘Teatro Cervantes’ to the municipal ‘Maestro Padilla’ auditorium to save money. The 3rd “Extreme 40 Sailing Series” returns to Almería this October, not the final series of races this year, but the penultimate race before the final in Singapore. Focus on Local News El Algarrobico Invasion A dozen Gr eenpeace activists occupied t he El Algarrobico hotel at Carboneras for four da ys from September 5th. They asked for an agreement between central government and the Junta de Andalucía for the “immediate” demolition of the hotel. The ma yor of Carboneras, Sal vador Hernández, r eacted str ongly to t his pr essure stating that the ecologists had never objected to the hotel during the planning stage nor the initial construction. He sugg ested t hat t he almost completed project should be finished rather then demolished. He reiterated that at the time the hotel was started it com plied with all curr ent planning regulations and there was no corruption of an y kind be tween t he council and t he developers. He considered that the future of the hotel was entirely subject to current court cases, not any action by ecologists. 300 residents from Carboneras made their own protest on the beach in fr ont of t he ho tel str essing t he need for employment and tourism for the area. The Spanish government then revealed a proposed agreement with the Junta de Andalucía wher eby the state would pay for the demolition and the Junta the clearing of the site and the remodeling, once all the court cases were resolved. This agreement was greeted by the ecologists as electioneering prior to the November General Elections in Spain, and scepticism by Carboneras council and t he developers. Lest We Forget The Almería Association Against Alzheimer took to the streets of the capital on September 21st, World Alzheimer Day. There are considered to be 500,000 people suf fering from this complaint throughout Spain, with 500 in Almería province. 6% to 10% of the population over 65 are believed to suffer, although up to 30% of cases may not have received a definite diagnosis. For people over the age of 80, this figure is estimated by some neurologists t o be up t o 50%. 20 11 is a y ear dedicated to the investigation of Alzheimer disease and an International Congress has been held in

Madrid. There are different types of Alzheimer disease with dif ferent levels of pr oblems and diagnosis by an expert is necessary to determine the treatment. At present this treatment can only try to slow down the severity and ensur e the highest level of car e. Doctor Félix Viñuela is a neurologist fr om t he Andalusían Socie ty of Neurology and states that a new protocol for the testing of t he disease and ne w guidelines for treatment have recently been accep ted world wide. This is aimed at a more accurate assessment of the patient and a greater degree of specialized treatment.

Almería to Rumania? The lo w cost airline com pany “Fl y Me”, in conjunction with the Rumanian airline “Blue Air” is investigating the feasibility of a new route from Almería to Bucharest. “Fly Me” has for this reason opened an of fice at Almería airpor t. Almería province has a R umanian population of 45,000, the third largest in Spain. Other airports in Spain operate flights to Rumania but Victor Rubido of “Fly Me” is con vinced that low cost f lights to Rumania from Almería are viable. The majority of Rumanians living in Almería pr ovince originate from Transylvania, with the third largest city Cluj Napoca, and Victor Rubido does not rule out the possibility of flights to this destination instead of Bucharest. Apart from serving the local resident population, Victor Rubido believes that Almería could also become a focal point for tourism from Rumania. Operation Costablanca As a r esult of a number of ‘denuncias ’ (official complaints) made to police in Pilar de la Horeadada, Orihuela and Torrevieja an official investigation was started codenamed “Operation Costablanca”. In early September this resulted in the arrest of a husband and wife living in the La Parata region of Mojácar. The allegations are that the couple advertised holiday lets on various properties in the Costablanca and took deposits or full payment when the pr operties were either let to other renters or had owner occupiers. As a result of a search of the couple’s home a police spokesman claimed that up to 60 people may have paid over 150,000 euros for lets. It was further alleged that holiday makers from Portugal, the UK, F rance, Italy and Belgium arriv ed for holida ys without being able to use the properties that they had paid for. The couple were released on bail while investigations continued. Night Excursion The Calar Alto observatory invited mayors and major business owners from the Almanzora region for a night time visit. The aim of this visit was to stress the importance of t he observatory and also str ess t hat night time skies w ere being contaminated by the amount of str eet lighting and industrial lighting. David Galadí led the visitors through the installation and asked for their cooperation in k eeping t he night skies uncontaminated. He also stated that areas such as Cabo de Gata and Tabernas were recognized as being extremely important and that the Sierra de los Filabres where the observatory is sited was equally im portant. Calar Alt o st arted t heir astronomy work in 1975 and in 2005 the Spanish astronomers joined forces with counterparts in Germany. Their investigations have been of major importance int ernationally and r ecently a

catalogue of observatory photographs has been assembled t o giv e o ther astr onomers or investigators access t o these via t he Internet. Three telescopes are in use with mirrors measuring 1.23m, 2.2m & 3.5m. The Vera Theatre Work on the Vera theatre which when finished will be the largest in the Levante area, is stated to be com pleted “within months”. Cultural and education councillors from Vera recently visited the pr oject along wit h t he ma yor José A . Fernández. The municipal building, no t just a theatre, will seat 600 people and covers an area of 1,500 m2. The number of seats is 50% lar ger than the ‘Rafael Alberti’ theatre in Huércal-Overa. The t heatre w as st arted in 2006 but tw o contractors went into bankruptcy and the project is no w being f inished b y t he multi-ser vices company ‘Codeur’, 49% owned by Vera Council.

Biomass Fuel production

Biomass Petrol A Spanish com pany ‘Bio F uel Systems S.A .’, at present operating in Alicante, is to pioneer a new system of pr oducing petrol from CO2 and t he sun at Carboneras. The plant will be uniq ue in Spain and captures CO2 emissions that are then subject to a pr ocess using pho to-bioreactors utilizing solar ener gy to produce biomass. The initial plant will cover 3 hectares and the eventual size will be stepped up to 30 hectares. Carboneras has been chosen as near industries that emit CO2

This year, 35mm film will be phased out and entries must be in Digital Video format to HD standards. Babwil

140-2054 to Madrid A famous steam train manufactured in 1928 by Babcock and Wilcox and known locally as “Babwil” has been t aken from the station of Guadix t o Madrid. It will be used t o pull a f amous tourist train that has 4 “Costa” carriages made in 1920. During September and October, the “Babwil” will make 14 journeys between Madrid and Aranjuez, known as “El T ren de la F resa” t hat has been featured e very y ear since 1 984. Of ficially denominated as ‘R enfe’ locomotive 140-2054, “Babwil” is t he only coal f ired steam train still operational in Spain. It has featured in many films including “The Good, the Bad & the Ugly”, “Doctor Zhivago” and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”, and was regularly in use on t he Almería-Linares line. It is hoped t hat “Babwil” can be used ag ain on a similar tourist journey between Almería and Linares, taking in the film locations, a route known as “Camarca de Guadix”.

Focus on Local News continued Seed Sales Apart from exports of fruit and vegetables Almería producers of seeds ar e br eaking all r ecords. 780,000 kilos were sold during the first six months of 2011 putting Almería pr ovince in third place throughout Spain after Seville and Barcelona. This was a 63% rise over the first six months of 2010 and sales amounted to 12 million euros. Portugal was the largest customer followed by Holland and Israel. Importation of seeds t otalled 24 million euros, down 27% on the year before with 50% coming from Holland and 30% from France. The provincial deleg ate for A griculture Juan Deus commented that as exports increased and imports decreased, the sales of seeds were an important sector of the horticultural trade.

The Hotel Price Index Each year hotel prices are charted and published on the “HPI”, Ho tel Price Inde x. Figures for t he first half of 20 11 show that hotels in Almería province had the lowest prices in Spain and also the highest discounts o ver 2010. The a verage price for a night’s stay in Almería province is given as 53 euros, a drop of 25%. Granada prices were 68 euros per night, 6 euros less than Málaga. The most expensive location in mainland Spain was San Sebastián with a price tag of 118 euros. San Miguel de Abono in Tenerife sported a price increase of 41%, going up fr om 63 eur os in 20 10 to 89 in 2011, stated to be due to the opening of a new golf com plex. Meloner s in t he Canar y Islands increased their rate by 9% to 166 euros per night. The f irm of lawyers representing José Aleman for t he past two years has now notified the court that they no longer wish to represent him. After the arrests, the Almería lawyer Francisco Torres was retained by various people including Juan Enciso the then mayor, and José Aleman. Af ter a f ew days this lawyer decided that there was a conflict of interest in representing both and backed out in favor of the firm of lawyers ‘Lealtadis’, as regarding José Aleman. If he does no t appoint ano ther set of lawyers to represent him he will be appoint ed a lawyer b y t he cour t. The judg e who has investigated this corruption scandal for the past two years has also moved on to a new posting in Granada. A new judge will be elected to continue with the investigation.

She also submitted her disability pass and asked for assistance in Almería and Charmartín de Madrid for her electric wheelchair using the ‘Talgo’ train. When she arrived at Almería st ation along with the Almería Multiple Scler osis president, Isabel Martínez, also in a wheel chair, and attempted to board the train they were told that there was no wheelchair space on t he train. Af ter remonstrations, they were allowed to board just before the train departed, as a “favour”. When on the train t hey had t o const antly mo ve t heir wheelchairs to allow passengers to pass b y. A complaint has been made against ‘Renfe’ as the Almería society state that the lack of wheelchair access is against the 2007 decree that regulates the use of transport without discrimination against travellers with some form of physical challenge. This is the second time that a complaint like this has been made regarding the ‘Renfe Talgo’ service from Almería.’ Fraud in Fiñana Investigations by fraud squad police lead to the arrest of a couple in F iñana accused of fraud against at least 12 victims. It is alleged that they obtained details of bank account number s and the location of the banks by pretending that they were tax officials or, in some cases extracting mail from post bo xes. The y t hen made ur gent telephone calls to the bank asking for transfers explaining that the account holder was in labour, or had a disease that made it impossible to travel to the bank in per son. They provided additional details regarding the account holders and several banks made the transfers, normally between 1,000 and 1,500 eur os. P eople in Almería, Canjá yar, Pechina, Purchena, Roquetas, Serón and V icar were targeted, including one w oman who w as since childhood, a friend of one of t he accused. Once arrested it was found that the couple had carried out a similar scam in Guadix last year when they defrauded a 79yr old woman of 2,000 euros. It is alleged that the couple obtained a minimum

of 9,500 euros between April to June this year and investigations are continuing. “Yes and No” The sub-director of the traffic authority, ‘Dirección General de T ráfico’, (DG T) R amón Ledesma, announced in Córdoba recently that cyclists could use pavements more than 3 metres wide if they kept 1 metre away from buildings. Pérez Rubalcaba, Director General of the DGT, was forced to amend this relaxation in the Spanish Senate in answer to questions. Rubalcaba stated that Ramón Ledesma had got it backwards way round and this use of a pavement was only where the outside of t he pavement nearest the road was destined as a cycle w ay and so mark ed. Ther e is a g eneral prohibition of cy clists using pa vements and Rubalcaba stated that avoiding conflict between cyclists and pedestrians w as of paramount importance. The association “Al-Pedal” in Almería considers that much more should be done t o increase cycle ways and moving cyclists off a road onto par t of a wide pa vement w as no t a satisfactory solution.

Port Figures The Almería P ort Authority administrates the ports of Almería and Carboneras. Figures for 2010 showed a profit after expenses of 138,000 euros compared to 1 million euros in 2009, a difference amounting to a loss of 87%. Focus on Local News continued considered a result of the economic difficulties and that in 2011 this figure had also fallen 10% with respect to the number of passengers using Almería port to go to North Africa for Ramadan. Altogether 994,000 passengers used the port in 2010. As regards Carboneras, the volume of coal used by ‘Endesa’, the electricity supplier, had fallen 30% to 1.6 million tonnes. Coal used by ‘Holcim’, the cement manufacturer, amounted to 0.8 million tonnes but cement going out of the port was up 8%. The fall in coal used by ‘Endesa’ was put down to less demand fr om consumers for electricity (again put down to the economic squeeze) and also t he incr ease in electricity g enerated b y alternative energy sources such as wind po wer and solar farms. 3.9 million tonnes of goods were shipped out of the port, just less than 2009. Cruise ship passengers increased by 48% at Almería port, mostly owing to larger cruise ships coming to the port at Almería. The number of cruise ships visiting the port fell by 9%, in fact just 1 cruise ship less. A bellhop, Pedro Flores, from Santa Monica in t he US started a company during the 1920s making wooden yo-yos and Donald F.Duncan bought this company in 1 929 and lat er produced the first plastic versions. Teddy Bears In November of 1902, President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt was on a hunting trip in Mississippi while trying to settle a boundar y dispute. His st aff, trying to accommodate him, captured a Louisiana black bear cub for t he President to shoot but Roosevelt set the cub fr ee. A f amous political cartoonist drew a cartoon depicting this and Morris Michtom, a toy store owner in Brooklyn, made a stuffed bear cub and e xhibited it alongside t he cartoon. He was besieged by customers wanting one so he and his wife started making hand sewn bears. Roosevelt gave his permission t o call the bears “Teddy Bears”. supply of water “for today & tomorrow” was the phrase used when Rosa Aguilar, Minister for t he En vironment, opened a ma jor ne w desalination plant for t he ‘Le vante’ ar ea on September 19th. The desalination plant she was officially opening is between Palomares and Villaricos and is called la ‘Desaladora Bajo Almanzora’. The project was started in August 2007 and has now come on-line as regards the supply of 5 cubic hectometres of water for irrigation purposes. This new desalination plant is part of the master plan A.G.U.A. for the region, t hat plans for f ive plants t hroughout Almería province. Taking water from the sea to be used for irrigation, industrial needs and drinking water has become a proven and ef fective way of pr oducing this demand for w ater and ma jor advances in t he technology used has not only benefited Spain but has allowed the major Spanish contract ors to export t his t echnology t o o ther pr ojects in countries such as the US, Mexico, South America, North Africa, Turkey, India and China. It is unusual if any new major plant worldwide does not receive a bid from Spanish companies. The ‘Bajo Almanzora’ plant has cost 7 6 million euros and has an EU g rant of 23 million eur os. When totally in ser vice it will suppl y 20 cubic hectometres of water of which 15 is designated for irrigation and industry use and 5 for drinking water. It will have the capacity to provide irrigation water to 12,000 hectares of land under extensive The storage tank at Sopalmo

cultivation and the needs of 150,000 people. The project includes an open air holding ar ea, an artificial lake, that can hold 48,000 cubic metres of water destined for irrigation and this ‘balsa’ is now operational. T wo mor e co vered st orage facilities of 12,000 & 24,000 cubic metres will be built to store drinking water. The plant includes an observation tower and an area where visitors such as sc hools can see t he w orking of a desalination unit.

The Bajo Almanzora desalination plant

A major feature of this plant is a connecting pipe to the Carboneras desalination facility which was opened at the end of 2006 and is still the largest in Europe. It was built and is run by the consortium of engineering com panies and banks using t he initials “AcuaMed” that stands for “Aguas de las Cuencas Mediterráneas”. The Bajo Almanzora plant has also been built by this company. The design capability of the plant at Carboneras is 80 cubic hectometres, but when it opened it was supplying just 20. This was not because of any miscalculation by the design team! The total production capability was to allow other desalination plants or areas to be interconnected. Soon after the construction of the Bajo Almanzora desalination plant w as st arted, A cuaMed commenced the installation of a 90cms pipeline with water pumped from the Carboneras facility to Sopalmo near Mojácar, where a 35,000 cubic metre covered holding tank was contructed. The initial 14 kms of pipe includes a 700 metre tunnel. The altitude of the Sopalmo deposit then allowed

for the water to flow by gravity through another 31kms of pipeline snaking past Mojácar and its link with the Garrucha-Los Gallardos road, alongside the Garrucha to Las Buganvillas link, and then on to the Bajo Almanzora project. Bédar, Los Gallardos, Garrucha, Mojácar, and Turre then benefited from desalinated drinking water when all the connections were made and the pipeline officially opened in early August. When totally completed, HuércalOvera and Albox will be linked in, with a total length of 65 kms of pipe and a cost of 89 million euros. The joining up of t he two desalination plants enables drinking w ater from Carboneras t o be supplied to the Bajo Almanzora plant until t heir potable water section is on-line, or supplement this in peak demand times if more drinking water is needed. It is envisaged that a maximum of 15 cubic hectametres will f low from Carboneras, supply t he Le vante ar ea and t hen on t o t he Almanzora region. When the Bajo Almanzora plant is fully operational, the two plants and the pipeline will cater for the total supply needed, not just for agriculture and industry, but also the highly variable demand from residents and t ourists. The Extreme 40 Series

lmería port hosts “Act 8” of the Extreme 40 Sailing Series races fr om October 12-16th. This is the third year that Almería has staged this event and if this year goes well it may well be held in Almería for another two years. It is the “Formula 1” of the sea, and world famous nautical names come together to race t he 40f t cat amarans. The creators of the Extreme 40 took the biggest, fastest sailing boat in the Olympics, the ‘Tornado’, and then made it twice as big and e ven faster. “The concept of Extreme 40 is to bring the sailing to t he public and no t t he o ther w ay r ound,” explains Herbert Dercksen, CEO of ‘TornadoSport’, which developed the 40ft catamaran in 2005 and build the boats. “The Extreme 40s are incredibly exciting to watch and we placed great emphasis on enjoyment for the spectators, to try to give them the thrill of what it is like to sail the Extreme 40.” Almería port is considered an ideal location for the series of races wit h spectators almost able t o t ouch t he racing cat amarans. The Extreme 40s are made of a honeycomb core trapped between two carbon fibre skins and the whole boat, including the sails, weighs about the same as a Mini Cooper. The catamaran fits inside a standard 40ft shipping container, and the crew can assemble it in just a few hours. The stability is provided by the shape of t he structure, the Extreme 40 being a “r ectangle” sitting on t he water, but things change very quickly when the wind kicks in and one of t he two hulls starts to fly. An Extr eme 40 cat amaran is capable of reaching speeds of 40 knots or 73 k/hr, and one of the flying hulls can often be 3 metres above the water.

The Mediterranean Diet

ext month is the first anniversary of ‘Unesco’ declaring the Mediterranean Diet a cultural heritage. Within Spain this is known as “DM” that stands for ‘Dieta Mediterránea’. ‘Unesco’ chose to recognize the Mediterranean diet as a cultural heritage that must be protected after a submission by Spain with the participation of Italy, Greece and Morocco. What is meant by this diet is no t as sim ple as a r ecipe or a cook book; it refers to a lifestyle based on food types, which is sometimes elevated to a “philosophy” of living. This lifestyle based on food varieties has evolved over many centuries from the countries in t he Mediterranean area and has t herefore become something of a blend or mix of different cultures and national diets. It is considered that the selection of t his die t b y ‘Unesco ’ has underlined its importance and has helped Spain t o stay at the forefront as an exporter of fruit and vegetables. Also it is seen as a t ourist enticement not only just from menus in a restaurant but also for rural tourism and visits to specialized food production centres, wine producers and tourist trails such as ‘tapas’ routes.

The three main compositions of the diet are seen as cereal production, grape vine cultivation and olives, with the use of high quality olive oil as the backbone or k ey t o t his die t. Ot her ma jor ingredients are seen as fresh fruit and vegetables, along with dried fruit and nuts, bread and cereal

products (ric h in carboh ydrates), and food products “in season” wit h t he minimum of processing or alteration. Cheese, yoghurt, eggs, fish, wine in moderation with meals, and a small amount of red meat are also included in this list. It is recommended that yoghurt and cheese are eaten daily, red meat sparingly (preferable in a stew or similar manner), oily fish at least twice a week, eggs for protein and fresh fruit daily after every meal. Olive oil as the alternative to animal fat in cooking and as an addition t o foods such as salads has been pr oven scientifically to help prevent heart disease, cancer, arthritis and the onset of age related illnesses. Almería province is the major supplier of fruit and vegetables that are exported from Andalucía along with olives and olive oil. Spain produced 1.4 million tonnes of olives in the 2010/2011 season and exported just less than 50%. Olive oil exports to other EU countries (particularly Italy) account for 66% of the production. Almería province can offer fruit and vegetables throughout the year and sales nationally bring in 15,000 million euros. Quality control is considered vital together with bar codes and consumer information as t o the “best before” dates, country of origin labels and nutritional information. Apart from the website www.alimentación.es, the Spanish Ministry of the Environment publish a vast range of leaf lets and post ers pr omoting t he consumption of fruit and v egetables and t he Mediterranean diet starting with schools, health centres, food distribution chains and world wide export markets. This July, information points were set up in the airports of Málaga, Tenerife, Majorca and Alicante. 75,000 leaflets in three languages were given out and 26,000 portions of fruit and vegetables w ere consumed on t he spo t. On September 20th, Rosa Aguilar, Spanish Minister for the Environment obtained a promise from Brussels and the EU to publicize the Mediterranean diet in member states, and other markets, for a minimum of three years with a budget of 15 million euros.

The main benef iciaries will be ‘Asprodalba’, the local centre in Vera for people with learning difficulties, and ‘P AWS’, t he animal charity in Mojacar. 12 teams will take part in a race against the clock, with a 150 euros voucher for the fastest, with further prizes of a 1 00 euros voucher and a 50 euros voucher. The Ashes Stacey makes a new friend at school and invites her home for the first time. Stacey excuses her self t o f etch her Mum t o introduce her new friend. The Cure A man w ent to see his doct or because he w as suffering fr om a miserable cold. His doct or prescribed some pills, but they didn't help. On his next visit t he doctor gave him a sho t, but t hat didn't do any good. On his t hird visit the doctor told the man to go home and take a hot bath. As soon as he was finished bathing he was to throw open all the windows and stand in the draught. "But doc," protested the patient, "if I do t hat, I'll get pneumonia." "I know," said his physician. "I can cure pneumonia."

A couple was delighted when finally their long wait to adopt a baby came to an end. The adoption center called and told them they had a wonderful Japanese baby boy, and t he couple took him without hesitation. On the way home from the adoption centre, they stopped by the local college so they each could enroll in night courses. After they filled out t he form, t he registration clerk inquired, "What ever possessed you to study Japanese?" The couple said pr oudly, "W e just adopted a Japanese baby and in a year or so he'll start to talk. We just want to be able t o under stand him".

Flying Without a Parachute A man jumps out of an aeroplane with a parachute on his back. As he's falling, he r ealizes his â€˜c hute is br oken. He doesn't kno w an ything about parachutes, but as the earth rapidly approaches, he realizes his options are limited. He t akes off the parachute and tries to fix it himself on the way down. The wind is ripping past his face, he's dropping like a rock, and at 5000 feet, another man goes shooting up past him. In desperation, the man with the chute looks up and yells, "Hey do you kno w an ything about parachutes?!" The guy flying up looks down and yells, "No, do you know anything about gas stoves?!"
