ast year in our October magazine we predicted possible heavy rain on September 26th and 27th. This was because we had deluges in 2009 on these dates, roads swept away in 2008, and a film crew marooned at ‘Fort Bravo’ in 2007. This year it was clear skies!

Also his treatment of prisoners was reputedly barbaric, so October 12th was re-named ‘Día de la Hispanidad’, Hispanic Day. Also it is the Saint’s Day of “Nuestra Señora del Pilár”, (Mary, Virgin of the pillar). Legend has it that the Virgin Mary was seen rising into heaven on a pillar. Her National Shrine is in Zaragoza Cathedral, as well as a claimed segment of the pillar. Now if this wasn’t enough, the Guardia Civil police have Mary, Virgin of the Pillar as their patron saint. Because of this, Guardia police stations are decked out with flowers, with parties for their families, and parades in cities to mark the event. Huércal-Overa have one of their major fiesta events

Focus on Local News Tax on Bags The Spanish government are to impose a tax of 5 céntimos in 2011, for every plastic bag that is used in trade by consumers from any store or shop. In 2012 this will be increased to 10 céntimos. The object of this tax is to stop plastic bags being used. In 2011 this should result in 18 million euros being collected in Almería province, as it is calculated that every person uses 280300 plastic bags per year. The calculation regarding plastic bags is that if five persons stopped using five plastic bags per week, this would result in a world-wide saving of 322,000 million bags, and also save 11,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Alternative bio-degradable bags can be put in the general rubbish containers where after about 180 days they have become compost. How the tax will be collected has not been fully explained.

Beachbar Complaint The beach bar opposite restaurant ‘Lance’ on Mojácar beach was the subject of a court investigation not long ago. The owner of restaurant ‘Lance’ complained that the granting of the licence to a nearby hotel was flawed, and did not comply with regulations as to where it was placed, along with complaints about hygiene. Mojácar councillors, including the mayoress, had to go to court over the issue, but the judge ruled in their favour. Now, another court action is being started by the same person against the council over basically the same complaint. The lawyer acting for the restaurant owner thinks that several important facts were not considered by the court. Mojácar councillors have so far refused to comment.

Palomares Bomb Money The American Department of Energy have confirmed that they are no longer paying the average annual amount of 314,000 euros for inspection of the land at Palomares where the four nuclear bombs fell in 1966, nor the cost of blood and health tests for residents that lived there at the time. Spain is to take over most of these costs. The planned clean-up operation that was recently agreed and inspection of particular areas will go ahead, paid for by the US. The cleaning operation has a price tag to the US of about 25 million euros. One of the important parts of this agreement was that the US remove any plutonium, as Spain has no facility where this can be stored. If any technical advice is required in the future, the US have agreed to make this available.

Another bit! The Spanish ministry of transport department ‘Adif’ that deals with railways and the AVE high speed train, has awarded a contract for the 14 km section between Lorca and Los Almendricos in Murcia. The contract cost for this section is just over 1 million euros and is another link in the 183 km line from Murcia to Almería. The total project has a budget of 2,500 million euros.

Albox Hotel Albox council have approved the change in use of 7,500 m2 of land on Avenida Lepanto for a 3 or 4 star hotel with 200-300 rooms. The mayor of Albox, José García states that Albox lacks any hotel facilities and there is a hotel group who are interested in the project. The change of use for the land will have to be approved by

Adopt an Orange Tree! Isabel Alvargonzález Aemer is one of the proud owners of Cortijo “Los Marines”, Finca “El Rincón, Antas Real and is trying to keep the centuries old family orange production viable. Isabel, aged 34, is trying a new idea and renting out orange trees for 60 euros. The plan is called “Adopt an Orange Tree”, and the oranges in question are an Australian variety, ‘Navel Lane Late’ that they have been cultivating for 5 years on 19 hectares. The oranges will be ready for harvesting in March or April and Isabel is hoping for 20,000 kilos. People who have adopted a tree will receive a certificate

Focus on Local News continued and can come and collect their oranges when they are ready. If owners cannot get to the orange groves Isabel will send up to 15 kilos of oranges to them. So far 200 people have signed up.

Tourist Centres Problems Tourist information centres were opened not many months ago as part of the tourist promotion plan of Almanzora region. These buildings were erected at Arboleas, Olula del Río, Tíjola, Séron, Cantoria and Purchena. Each centre has about 70m2 of floor space with toilet facilities and storeroom and exhibition area as well. The Arboleas office is now almost part of the new motorway workings, but it suffers from the same complaint that this centre cannot communicate with any of the others! Olula del Río could open if they could get the electricity finally connected. All the centres have a theme such as “Earth” for Olula, “Fire” in Cantoria, and “Water”in Tíjola. Unfortunately all these centres seem to have problems regarding who runs them and when they are open.

New Maternity Hospital Whilst some projects have been put on ice because of money constraints, the Maternity and Infant hospital in Almería city is to go ahead. The Junta de Andalucía (governing body for Almería province) has approved the expenditure of 29 million euros and a completion date of 2013. The new hospital will be constructed almost alongside the existing maternity wards at Torrecárdenas hospital, with 88 beds for mothers and 101 for babies and very young children. 70 neo-natal nurses will be employed along with surgical teams and extra consultants. It is considered that there are 174,000 women of childbearing age in the area that Torrecárdenas serves, and this number is going up every year, and has increased by 28% in the last 10 years.

The council agree that the report advises the complete shutting down of the whole complex, but state that the catering school and library was the part of the building most affected, and deny that there is any risk to persons using the viewing area.

First Phase Authorised The railway loading dock at Almería port was built by John Harrison, a Scottish engineer, between 1900 and 1904. It was a storage and discharge jetty with an elevated link to Almería station for the transport of ore from Alquife in Granada to the rest of the world. For this reason it was known as “El Alquife” or “El Cable Inglés”. In 1998 it was declared an item of cultural importance and an architectural competition was held in 2007 regarding the restoration. The competition was won by the architect Ramón de Torres. The first phase of the work involving reinforcement, metal and wood restoration and anti corrosion treatment has been awarded to ‘Dragados y Construcciones’, a company specialising in marine work, dredging and building work. Their tender of just over 2 million euros was chosen from the 37 tenders received. The time period for this work is given as 14 months. “El Cable Inglés” is a huge iron structure that dominates one side of the port. In 2004 it was illuminated at night with a very large number of lights.

Warning of Collapse The ‘Plaza Nueva’ and viewing area in Mojácar village should not be used, according to a technical report made by ‘ICC Control de Calidad’ a company well known for inspections and quality control of buildings and materials. The report, made at the end of June, states that cracks in pillars in the buildings underneath, mean that the whole building is in danger of collapse. These buildings include the school of catering and the library that have been closed until further notice. The policia

Rising Smoke The time period for bodies or societies that wish to make changes to the proposed new “anti-smoking” regulations has now closed. The Spanish Association of Hotels have confirmed their objection to any changes to the current law, or requested alternatively a

Focus on Local News continued completely enclosed smoking area where children would not be allowed. Representatives of Unions for bar and hotel workers requested that the law was unchanged, and proper inspection took place by the authorities, to enforce the existing law. The PP party (conservatives) supported the idea of closed off areas, and suggested that any change with regard to Hotels and Restaurants be put off until July 1st 2011. The President of the Spanish Association of Casinos requested that casinos be excluded from any changes. Any changes in the smoking laws will now be debated by parliament in due course.

Green Power The provincial delegate for the department of Science and Innovation has revealed that during 2011, Almería province will have 24 wind farms producing 650 Mw of electricity, a third more than at the end of 2009. 18 wind farms are in operation with a further 3 fully approved. Another 3 have full permissions but are waiting for a connection to the main electrical grid. The electricity available in 2011 will be enough for 900,000 people and the reduction in carbon emissions is equivalent to scrapping 280,000 vehicles. The delegate, Pérez Navas, said that Almería province was becoming a reference point for green energy and in addition to wind power, solar voltaic panels supplied 69 Mw of electricity.

problems and complaints between beach bar owners and the coastal authority know as “Costas”, that has previously been responsible. It is considered that beach bars are an essential part of life and a major tourist attractor in Andalucía. As such, it is thought that they should be subject to normal regulations such as health and safety, food legislation and sanitation, but be given some leeway on their location. It is hoped that the tourist department of the Junta de Andalucía will take over the responsibility next January 1st.

Garrucha Improvements The Garrucha town hall have finalised a project for improving the look of he entrance to Garrucha from the Turre/Vera road. The plan is to modify both sides of the existing road and provide new illumination. The existing elevated crossing will not be affected, nor the entrance to the school. The plans have been presented to the rural development body that it is hoped will provide some of the necessary cost, calculated as 90,000 euros.

Happy Summer Christmas! The hotel group ‘Servigroup’ celebrated Christmas at the end of August in two of their hotels in Marina de la Torre, Mojácar. All the staff and a large number of guests dressed up in Christmas gear, complete with the three kings on camels. A video, designed for the Internet, was made of the various festivities and different groups of guests and staff of both the hotels, with the aim of reminding potential visitors at Christmas that the hotels provided all that is needed. At the time the video was made both hotels were 100% full, whereas at Christmas some hotels have to shut owing to a lack of customers.

Beach Bar Change From January 1st 2011 the administrative body that looks after beach bars will change. The Junta de Andalucía (governing body for Andalucía, including Almería) will take over this responsibility, and there are reportedly 90 beach bars in Almería province. This was supposed to have happened this year, following continual

Flu Jabs Now is the time of year when vaccinations are available for the “normal” or “seasonal” ‘flu that affects people every winter. There will be 100,000 doses available in Almería province. These vaccinations are intended for people over the age of 60, people who suffer from a chronic condition all year, and people who are in contact with elderly people through their work, such as health workers. To get the vaccination you make an appointment at your normal health centre. Each year the composition of the normal ‘flu vaccine is changed slightly, to take into account different types of ‘flu from other countries. Spanish Health Authorities have stated that the seasonal vaccine will not include any

Focus on Local News continued ‘Gripe A’ element from last year. Luckily the fears about ‘Gripe A’ or ‘Swine ‘Flu’ proved to be unfounded, and hardly anybody had the vaccines. It was officially declared to be of absolutely minimum threat this summer. A recent study suggests that older people, prone to pneumonia and respiratory diseases, have less heart attacks if they have the winter ‘flu jabs.

Goats to Belarus The Republic of Belarus, bordered by Russia, Poland and the Ukraine need goats, and representatives of a milk company in Volkovysk want to buy them from Almería province. There are two million people in Belarus who are allergic to normal cows’ milk, but no alternative is available. The idea is that 3,500 goats are purchased from Huércal-Overa, Taberno and Arboleas. Milk production from the goats in Belarus would be offered as either powdered milk or liquid milk. Contact was first made in June and it is anticipated that a firm offer to purchase the goats will be concluded shortly.

More Teachers Some 180 new teachers have reduced the pupil to teacher ratio in Almería province to an average of 18 pupils for each teacher. In this academic year 20102011, 293 new classrooms have become “digital” in the 136 centres that offer 1st of ESO courses. 621 of the 5th & 6th of Primary classes have classrooms with digital equipment, and interactive blackboard, a projector and multi media equipment. And food is not forgotten, with 168 centres providing a school lunch.

Market Success

Cuevas del Almanzora had its first medieval market in August. It has been decided that the event was a great success both from income to the stallholders and interest from the general public. It is hoped that the event can be repeated in 2011. Local businesses and residents fear that after the parking project is finished there will be much less free parking available.

Neighbours Unite Residents living near the “Las Ventanicas” beach area of Mojácar Playa have formed a legal association to complain about the nightime noise. Their spokesman, Juan Diego González, states that they have formed this association to give themselves legal backing for their complaints. The main complaint is of music levels which they state are illegal by being too loud, and also the continuance of music until 5am. They also complain that some businesses operate without a licence, and standing water on an adjoining site where construction work has stopped, has proved a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Juan Diego says that in summer months

Disco in Trouble The ‘Meca’ disco in Aguilas opened in 1987, complete with a dome, minaret and Arabic-type arches. Recently the disco has been shut, but is now open again. This has resulted in complaints from Muslims who hacked onto the Internet page for the disco, and blocked it for 48 hours. The owners of the disco have now met with representatives of the local Muslim community (not responsible for the web page attack), and it has been agreed that the disco will be renamed as ‘La Isla’, and alterations made to the minaret, and other minor

Focus on Local News continued changes to Arabic lettering. It is not known who hacked on the web page but the owners state that the local Muslim community have been courteous and helpful with the proposed changes.

Driving School Offers

The ETA (Basque terrorist organization) sent a proposal for the beginning of a ceasefire to the BBC in the form of a video. This was only coolly received by the government, who since then have arrested more members and discovered another pit with guns and explosive materials hidden in containers. A further 3 alleged terrorists with 101kg of explosives were arrested on September 29th. ETA has proposed that negotiations should start with an International committee acting as mediators, such as the Nelson Mandela Foundation, or Mary Robinson a former Irish President.

With less pupils who can afford lessons, driving schools are coming up with offers to try and attract clients. Some of them are offering lessons on Sundays’, others are giving discounts, and some are offering a fixed price of 450 euros that includes obtaining the theory part of the requirement and 10 practical lessons. 20 new driving schools have opened up in the province in the last 2 years, and the total number is about 140. Demand for lessons has dropped off as much as 60% in some areas.

Morocco Venture The Almería Association of Subcontractors (Aesom) are intending to form a legal company in Rabat, Morocco where they can sell heavy plant and equipment not needed in Almería province to Moroccans. Jerónimo Parra, who is leading this initiative, says that with the economic climate in Spain there are a lot of lorries, excavators and other equipment lying idle at present, that is needed in Morocco. The company intend to liaise with the Moroccan authorities who know which projects are coming up, and the type of equipment required.

Huércal-Overa Work The municipal ‘Tanatorio’ (chapel of rest) is now considered too small, and in need of improvements as well. A grant of 340,000 euoros has been agreed from Mojácar Parador central government funds. The money will also pay for employment of local people who are at present without The ‘Extreme 40 Sailing Series’ work. Focus on Local News continued Not Yet! The planned increase in paternity leave from 15-30 days has been put back from 2011 to 2012. This is to save money in 2011. The cost of 30 days paternity leave is calculated at 400 million euros, whilst 15 days only costs 200 million. 136,000 fathers took advantage of the 15 days leave in the first quarter of 2010, whilst 165,000 mothers took their maternity leave up to the end of June.

Street Lighting 30 municipalities in Almería province have had 83 projects approved to install low energy lighting in streets and council buildings. The amounts of money come to 9 million euros of the 72 million that is being made available by the state for 2010. The plan also provides employment for a number of unemployed persons for the duration of the work. ‘

In theory this will end years of conflict, including a lengthy court action to determine who owned the church. The group ‘Friend of Las Salinas church’ state that this last winter had caused serious further damage and even bigger cracks. If emergency work is not started immediately they consider that another bad winter would see the church collapse. The church previously catered for the religious needs of the 300 workers and families at the salt flats, and has now become an emblem of the area and times. It appears that the council will adopt a completed plan for the restoration project, drawn up by church authorities. This would cut down the start time for work to be carried out, and the project price is about 400,000 euros.

Pipework Awarded ‘Acuamed’, the Spanish state water authority, have agreed the sum of 16 million euros for pipework to connect water deposits in the Levante area to the Carboneras/Almanzora desalinated water supply. This will guarantee water for domestic consumption and irrigation. 28.5 km of pipes will ensure that potable water is connected to Carboneras, Mojácar, Garrucha, Turre, Los Gallardos, Bédar, Antas, Vera, Huércal-Overa, Pulpí, Tabernas, Zurgena, Arboleas and Albox. 90,000 people will benefit from this improvement, with a capacity for as many as 250,000 at peak holiday times. The project is partly financed by EU funds and ‘Corsán Corviam Construcción S.A.’ will carry out the work.

Focus on Local News continued Senés Tragedy Firemen were called to Senés on September 13th to fight a forest fire. This was mainly achieved by the following day, but in the damping down work a 46 year old fireman died after it is believed he suffered a fall. The mayor of Turrillas, Juan Antonio Verdejo, paid tribute to the fireman who came from this municipality. The area where he fell is considered very dangerous and 061 rescue workers had a difficult job to rescue the fireman who was pronounced dead at the scene. He had worked for ‘Infoca’, the fire fighting group for 14 years.

Paramount Theme Park

is still the mayor until a legal conviction for any crime takes place. José Alemán, one of the other people accused in the Operation Poniente corruption scandal, was only recently released from prison on a bail of 600,000 euros. Mayor Encisco initially disputed that Alemán was receiving any salary from the council, but has now agreed that he is receiving a “basic” annual amount of 72,000 euros. Objectors to this use the same arguments, but state Enciso as mayor has the authority in law to terminate employment and payment to Alemán. Alemán’s wife, Isabel Carrasco, is a council employee and was the first of the accused to spend a night in prison, whilst friends and relatives came up with her bail of 76,000 euros. After this she went on sick leave from the council, suffering from stress. She returned to work at the council on September 13th, but was mobbed by photographers who consider she is very photogenic. Saturday, September 11th was “El EJido Day” celebrated every year with a speech by the major, various activities and a fiesta. This year the mayor eventually abandoned trying to give his speech after 35 minutes of shouting, catcalls and poster waving suggesting he stood down. Luckily Enciso had copies of his speech available for members of the press. The demonstrators numbered between 500-600 people, at various times, according to the police.

Authorities in Murcia have announced that they have concluded plans for a “Disney” type theme park from the American giant Paramount Pictures. This would involve an investment of 2,000 million euros, employment for 20,000 people and an extra 15,000 hotel places. Where the theme park will be has not been decided, but Lorca has been suggested as a suitable location with 60 hectares available. This would make sense regarding the proposed airport at Corvera and the AVE high speed train station at Lorca. Paramount Pictures with 4 theme parks in the US, do not run these parks themselves but licence another operator to run them, and provide all the Paramount Pictures material. Hotels.com deal with 120,000 hotels and other establishments, and won the Gold Award in 2009 from the magazine “Webuser”.

Less Fines? As a result of the economic situation in Spain there have been reductions made in the salaries of many public bodies, including the Guardia Civil police who have seen their salaries reduce by an average of 5%. As a result it is claimed that they are having a “go-slow” as regards some minor offences. In Almería province, fines given out in June 2009 numbered 3,500 but fell to 1,500 in 2010. Offences reported in July were 1,800 and in August 1,500. These amounts were 52% of the offences reported in 2009. It is claimed that the Guardia

DVD of the Month Solomon Kane

Based on the stories of Robert E. Howard, Solomon Kane follows the title character (James Purefoy), a feared medieval warrior, as he renounces his violent ways after surviving a vicious encounter with one of Satan's reapers. After he's thrown out of a monastery, Solomon hits the road in search of peace and forgiveness - yet there inevitably reaches a point at which the beleaguered fighter is forced once again to pick up arms and fight. Filmmaker Michael J. Bassett has infused Solomon Kane with an epic, unexpectedly lush visual sensibility that instantly draws the viewer into the proceedings, with the fantastic pre-credits sequence - in which Kane and his men encounter that aforementioned reaper - effectively establishing an atmosphere of tongue-in-cheek fun that's perpetuated for the duration of the movie's running time. It's worth noting that the movie succeeds even in its quieter moments, as Bassett offers up a surprisingly compelling midsection revolving around Kane's tentative friendship with a family of travellers. And although the writer/director has elicited fine work from a talented supporting cast that includes Pete Postlethwaite, Alice Krige, and Rachel Hurd-Wood, there's little doubt that Solomon Kane benefits substantially from Purefoy's compelling, thoroughly charismatic turn as the title character (ie he effortlessly transforms Kane into an almost iconic big-screen hero). The film's only real misstep lies in its less-than-stellar third act, which is ultimately exacerbated by an almost egregiously frenetic finale that simply feels anticlimactic and needlessly over-the-top - yet this isn't quite enough to diminish what is otherwise an exciting initial entry in what could (and should) be an ongoing series. So Now You Know... Who First Broke the Sound Barrier? We have no idea but almost certainly it was a Chinaman about 7,000 years ago “cracking” a whip that the Chinese invented. Scientists were amazed in 1927 when high speed photography showed that the loop forming when you crack a whip speeds up as it travels to the fine tip. The “crack” is when the loop breaks the sound barrier at about 742 mph or 1,192 km/h. In 1947, Chuck Yeager put himself into the history books when he reached 1,540 km/h at 22,000 metres above the Earth in his Bell X1. In 1967, an X-15A aircraft was piloted to 6,389 Km/h or 3,970 mph at 31,200 metres up. Changing History In 1945 Clark Gable, the darling of Hollywood, started dating Nancy Davis who he met in New York. Nancy was an aspiring actress and the gossip columnists speculated about a possible marriage. Nancy hero-worshipped Clark who made her laugh a lot, and they enjoyed seeing the town together. If they attended a party Nancy was always worried that Clark would be attracted to one of the glamorous women that flocked to his side. When he stayed with her, it boosted her confidence that she might someday become “somebody”. When she did marry she became Nancy Regan, and in time, first lady of the White House. Willy Wonka and Quaker Oats The Quaker Oats company were thinking big when they decided to put up 2.9 million dollars to help finance the 1971 film, ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’. They intended to bring out a new chocolate bar at the same time. By the time the film was released the Quaker Oats company had changed their minds about the chocolate bar, so after 7 years they sold the rights to the film to Warner Brothers for 500,000 dollars, deciding they knew more about cereals than films. The film became a cult in the 1990s and Nestlé manufactured the Wonka bars. All Quaker Oats could do was sulk!

A Shambles If something is untidy to the point of being chaotic we say it is a shambles. Also if we go to a badly organized event we call that a shambles. The word comes from “scamel” a Saxon word for a stall selling meat. The word then changed gradually to be a street, in any town up and down Britain such as in York, where there were butchers’ shops and a market. By the end of the day the street was usually littered with remnants of unwanted meat, dogs scavenging, unwanted wrappings and a general mess, a shambles. Shambles then became synonymous for any sort of undesirable or chaotic situation. A Nosy Parker Anyone who loves to delve into the lives of other people in an irritating way is known as a nosy parker. The original nosy parker was the Archbishop of Canterbury, Matthew Parker, who served under Queen Elizabeth 1st in the 16th Century. Matthew Parker was a keen church reformer, but was obsessed with prying into the lives of people he came into contact with. His reputation for prying and poking his nose in, lead to the phrase, “Using one’s nose”. This became the perfect phrase to go with the name Parker, who was so annoying everyone. Nosy Parker has stuck through history.

Which Bird Lays the Smallest Egg? The unlikely answer is an Ostrich, if you take into account the size of the bird! An ostrich egg is less than 1.5 % of the weight of the mother. A wren’s egg comes in at 13% of the weight of the wren. It is believed that the largest egg in comparison to the weight belongs to the Little Spotted Kiwi. The egg this bird produces is about 26% of the bird’s weight, so this is the same as a human mother giving birth to a baby that weighs the same as a six year old child. wo young Spanish photographers from Almería are receiving major awards for their photographs. They both specialise in the same category of “Weddings”. Carlos Felipe Ortiz has won many awards including four prizes in an Italian photography competition in Orivietto. In September he entered a set of photographs for the ‘International Photography Awards’ competition in New York. 15,000 photographs were entered by photographers from 21 countries this year. The 24 judges come from photography, advertising, fashion and companies such as National Geographic and the BBC. Of the various categories, Carlos of course chose “weddings”. His first prize photograph was entitled “Underwater Wedding” and showed a bride and groom sharing a kiss below water level.

Cologne to receive his award in the ‘FEP European Wedding Golden Camera Award 2010’. Clemente has won six photography prizes this year, including four International awards. He has won first prize in the ‘Spanish Federation of Professional Photographers’ competition this year, and also in ‘The European Competition for Professional Fashion Photographers” awards, in the category “Fashion & Weddings”. Like Carlos, he has entered in the Italian competition in Orivietto, and won a silver award for his wedding photos. He has been nominated five times for a “Goya” award for photography.

Carlos has been to the US before when he took a newly married couple and photographed them in front of the Rockefeller Centre, The Lincoln Centre and beside the Hudson River. He has also travelled to Scotland where he posed his married couple in front of the famous Eilean Donan castle. Clemente became interested in photography whilst he was at school in Roquetas de Mar, although initially he did not intend to follow in the family footsteps. Castles and Watchtowers

ou don’t have to go far in Almería province, particularly on the coastal areas, to see castles, towers and fortifications. These were essential, in years gone by, to protect the mainland from seaborne attack.

Los Velez at Cuevas del Almanzora now holds the famous ‘Antonio Manual Campoy’ exhibition of prestigious paintings, together with the municipal archives and an archaeological museum. The Vélez Blanco castle was built at the same time, between 1506 and 1515.

Some of them are fairly undamaged, others are in various states of decay, and some have reached the stage of being in danger of collapsing at any moment. The Junta de Andalucía (governing body) recently asked all the municipalities to draw up a list of such buildings, with the aim of restoration. Apart from the working lighthouses, the sensible use for most of theses castles and towers is to turn them into museums, tourist offices, panoramic viewpoints, or places where music or dance can be witnessed. The Garrucha castle of St Joaquin has been opened up to the public as a maritime exhibition centre, whilst the Castle of St Anne in Roquetas provides exhibitions, performances, courses and weddings. The Guardias Viejas castle at El Ejido puts on concerts and has a museum dedicated to military equipment and artefacts. From October, the restored castle and lighthouse of San Telmo, in Almería city, will open their newly restored 77 metre high viewing centre to tourists partaking in a guided tour. Other castles were put into use as police stations Santa Justa station at Seville for the Guardia Civil, including living quarters quite often. The Torre de San Miguel in Cabo de Gata is still officially used by the Guardia (on special occasions) and has been used by them since 1941. The tower or ‘torre’ at Huercal-Overa has just been restored and opened up to the public with a decent access path. The Mojácar tower at tower beach is similarly promised a face lift. The Villaricos tower has been opened as a small exhibition area and a summer tourist office.

La Batería de San Ramon

Some castles are privately owned, including one called ‘La Batería de San Ramon’ on the beach of Rodalquilar. The castle ‘Conde la Puebla’ in Gérgal, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada was bought in 1972, when it was almost a ruin and was sold at auction. It is now restored as a private dwelling. ‘La Torre de Cerrillos’ is in the Punta Entinas part of Cabo de Gata National Park, between Roquetas and El Ejido. This watchtower is in danger of collapse. “Fans” of the castle raise money and it has just been agreed that a security fence can be erected to stop the public climbing on such a dangerous building. The tower was built in 1594, but Roquetas de Mar are adamant that it does not belong to them, and El Ejido council says the same! Recently, the Spanish authority for coastal objects known as “Costas” has decided it belongs to them! Hopefully something can be done before it really does collapse. The stack of surveys that have stated what dangers exist would probably be enough to fill the worst of the cracks.

Hold Your Breath!

T

he picturesque Cabo de Gata salt flats have long been a paradise for nature lovers, ornithologists, tourists and photographers. The salt collection area that dates back to Roman times is only slightly man-made. Not far away is a sad church, obviously almost derelict, built on a base to stop the sea getting in. Hopefully, within a few months, vital restoration work will have been done. This will have come about after Almería council pay 250,000 euros for the land and church, to the Catholic Archdiocese of Almería. This will be the first step to close a very long saga regarding the church, and open a whole new chapter based on restoration and re-use. A French company still produce salt but with only a handful of employees. When it was most productive, 300 people, workers and family, lived and worked there. They exchanged wage “tokens” for food at the company food shop, visited their own local bars, went to their cinema, and on Sunday went to church. The owners of the salt concession built the church in 1907, which is surprising if you have first seen the church from some distance away. From afar it looks much older, very eerie, but the wind, rain and salt have all taken their toll.

The church of “San Miguel de La Almadraba” (St Michael of the Tunny fish) saw baptisms, marriages and funerals just like any other church, but meanwhile mechanical aids were reducing the amount of time needed to collect the salt, and also dramatically reducing the number of workers. Eventually the church fell into disuse. Years passed, but when moves were made to carry out some repairs, the Catholic Archdiocese found there was a major problem. The salt concession had changed hands, and the new French company claimed that they owned the church. They also denied access to workers, on the grounds that they owned all the surrounding land as well! Court action started, but the legal dispute between ‘Aetosal S.L.’ and the church authorities dragged on for years. Eventually the court ruled that the church and some adjacent land still belonged to the church authorities, and they had right of access. Meanwhile, the church suffered from the ravages of the weather, and even after the church authorities were declared the owners again, restoration work was minimal. The Catholic Archdiocese drew up plans to restore and remodel the church, but lacked the money to carry the work out. In December 2009, Mari Angeles García became President of ‘La Asociación de Amigos de la Iglesia de Las Salinas’, (‘The Association of Friends of Las Salinas Church’) and a pressure group was formed to try and break the deadlock. Joaquín Domínguez, president of the Cabo de Gata ‘Desalysol’ Association threw his weight behind a restoration project, and everyone agreed that if work was not started soon, it would not just be bits that were falling off the outside of the church - the whole church could collapse. In November, the money is supposed to change hands so that Almería council become the owners, and the Junta de Andalucía (governing body) have pledged financial help, along with, perhaps, a museum. In a 2007 documentary, a salt worker described how the ideal salt concentration looked pink in the evening light. It looks more rosy too, for the church hopefully.

On Sat, 6th Nov, the Wacky Races will once again cruise around the streets of Villaricos, for the 4th annual 'Autos Locos' in aid of Asprodalba. Parts of the village will be transformed into an exclusive race track for this fun event. There will be stalls, line dancing, a young Michael Jackson impersonator, and a Rock n' Roll show. So far six teams have pledged carts for the event but the organisers would like more. They also need helpers to act as marshals and to sell raffle tickets, and are asking for any unwanted presents or anything that could be donated for the raffle or auction. APSA , the animal charity in Albox, is producing a pantomime, Snow White, to be performed in January. The adult parts are now filled and 20 children are working at the Gym club at Girosol on a Saturday morning and at the Theatre and Dance group at Rumores also Saturday mornings. We are still looking for more children. We still need some dwarfs! English or Spanish. If you have a child who would love to be in the panto, whatever their abilities, including children with learning disabilities, we can accommodate them. ...and next... Your Duck is Dead A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. The vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest. After a moment or two, he shook his head and sadly said, "I'm sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away." The distressed woman wailed, "Are you sure?" "Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead," replied the vet "How can you be so sure?" she protested. "I mean you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something." The vet rolled his eyes and left the room. He returned a with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head.

Childbirth at 65 With all the new technology regarding fertility recently, a 65-year-old friend of mine was able to give birth. When she was discharged from the hospital and went home, I went to visit. 'May I see the new baby?' I asked. 'Not yet,' she said. 'I'll make coffee and we can chat for a while first.'

The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room. Then he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room.

Thirty minutes had passed, and I asked, 'May I see the new baby now?' 'No, not yet,' she said. After another few minutes had elapsed, I asked again, 'May I see the baby now?' 'No, not yet,' replied my friend. Growing very impatient, I asked, 'Well, when can I see the baby?'

The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck." Then the vet produced a bill which he handed to the woman."£150!" she cried, "£150 just to tell me my duck is dead!" The vet shrugged, "I'm sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been £20, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it's now £150."
