Another Fine October

his October has been similar to 2009, with some glorious sunny days. The beach in this weather has been a magnet for many tourists. It is a pity that at the “blue flag” beaches in Mojácar though, there are no flags indicating the state of the sea, nor lifeguards, even the toilets have been locked up! It would not seem to be much of a problem to keep them open a little bit longer, and aid the beach users. This is the season for concerts and drama performances with local groups either about to mount their first production, or having performed already, are planning their next venture. Almería city has the 21st Festival of Jazz finishing on November 19th, and Vera celebrate their 13th annual week of music from November 19th-22nd in honour of St Cecilia, Patron Saint of music. The John Lennon statue in Almería city is reportedly being moved to Plaza Flores, a busier location, to try and stop any further vandalism. The Almería short film festival, “Almeria en Corto”, takes place from December 6th-11th. This popular competition, now in its ninth year, has attracted a total of 551 entries this year, with 325 in the short film category and 226 in video format. Entries have been sent in from Spain, France, Germany and Mexico. A total of 49,500 euros is being given as prize money for the various categories, with 14,000 euros for the outright winner. Amnesty International has donated a trophy to be given to the short film or video that in their opinion most reflects human rights issues. This festival seems to grow each year regarding the number of entries and the prestige of winning a major prize in this very international competition.

On October 21st, the Spanish Congress, similar to the House of Commons in the UK, sent new anti-smoking regulations to be approved by the Senate. Smoking will be stopped in all bars and restaurants except for outside terrace areas so beach bars will be mainly unaffected. It will also be banned in children’s play grounds and school areas. It will be allowed in sports and football stadiums, bullrings, special areas in prisons, psychiatric hospitals and pensioner’s residential homes, and hotels can keep up to 30% of their rooms for smokers. Proposals by left wing politicians to ban smoking in children’s play areas, or outside hospitals were thrown out. Cigarettes will still be available for purchase in bars and restaurants as the proposals are not intended to ban tobacco sales. The Spanish Health Minister Trinidad Jiménez also made other proposals regarding advertising. The Senate can change the proposals slightly, but the new law is expected to come into force on January 2nd next year, rather than January 1st – so as not to spoil New Years Day!

The ninth short film festival with the above name will start on December 6th. Altogether 551 films and videos have been sent in, with 325 films and 226 videos. The competition attracts entries from all over the world and there are generous prizes, such as the 14,000 euros for the outright winner. This year there is a trophy to be awarded by Amnesty International for the entry that deals best with human rights. The event will open with a “western”, the winning film from last year “La Última Secuencia” by Arturo Ruiz.

Focus on Local News continued Fake Dentists On October 26th, police arrested a Syrian father and son who had been advertising their services as “travelling dentists” in the Poniente region of Almería. Gas Delays The natural gas coming from Algeria to Almería from the Medgaz pipeline has not yet arrived. This is because the Algerian company ‘Sonatrach’, the major shareholder, is holding back until the price of gas improves. At present, demand for gas is such that prices are somewhat low, and ‘Sonatrach’ is hoping to reach an agreement with the other shareholders to raise the price. Aquarium Stays Open The Roquetas aquarium, apart from shutting for Christmas holidays, will stay open this winter, although it will only be open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 7pm. El Ejido Council Problems The mayor of El Ejido, Juan Enciso, was in prison for 8 months, charged with various offences before being bailed. The council in the meantime held 7 council meetings of which 4 were routine and 3 were specially called for. Since Enciso has been released on bail, but refuses to stand down as mayor, there have been no normal council meetings. Council members are calling for extraordinary council sessions to try to get answers to various outstanding matters.

‘Flu Injections If you are over 65, a sufferer from a chronic illness, or prone to pneumonia type illnesses, or severely overweight, this is the time of year for your ‘flu jab. The vaccine is available at your local doctor’s. You may have to make an appointment to come back on a morning when they specialise in such things. You can ask to have the vaccine if your work puts you in contact with, for example, elderly people, and also if you are pregnant. This year the vaccine has been modified to include an element of the “A” type ‘flu that caused so much alarm last year. The ‘flu vaccine is free, and if you are over 65 and the Junta de Andalucía have your current address you will have received a letter inviting you to obtain this vaccine. If you are housebound the vaccination will be brought to your houses. In theory the vaccination period stops at the end of November.

Macael Luxury A new residential home for the elderly, described as a five star hotel, has been opened in Macael with provision for 150 persons. There are five floors and the facilities include therapy areas, a rehabilitation room, a chapel and a large heated swimming pool. Local materials have been used in the construction, including marble from Macael. It is intended that up to 80 people will be employed at the centre, that has been built by the company ‘Gerial’.

Running on Borrowed Time? New regulations are being proposed regarding coal fired power stations, particularly the ones that import the coal. This could lead to the closure of six Spanish power stations, one of them being Carboneras. This is the conclusion of an energy study done by analysts of the Swiss bank UBS. The power companies concerned are lodging appeals with the Luxembourg Tribunal against these proposals that have become known as “the coal laws”.

Dole for Self Employed From November 6th, the new regulations regarding self employed persons and unemployment will come into force. This should affect the 52,000 persons in Almería province who are self employed. To become registered, a self employed person has to be paying Social Security and from November agree to pay an extra 2.2% more. This has to be kept up for a minimum of 12 months, so people in this scheme would be entitled to claim after November 6th, 2011. There are various requirements to be met, to be regarded as unemployed. This new law is the “Ley 32/2010” of August 6th, and Gestors should be able to answer any questions concerning this entitlement, or your Social Security office.

Half Way! The tunnel boring machine “Alcazaba” has bored a distance of nearly 3 kilometres at the Sorbas tunnel site. Two tunnels are being bored side by side for the AVE, high speed passenger train, and the length of each tunnel is 7.5 kilometres. The boring machine that started work on July 9th is not going straight through to the end, as geological differences in the last 1.5 kilometres mean that conventional tunnelling, without a boring machine, has started at the northern end and has reached 800 metres. Major Sewage Plans The Junta de Andalucía (governing body for Almería province) has announced the improvement or construction of sewage disposal in the province at a cost of 200 million euros, and work for 3,500 people. Huércal-Overa will have 7.9 million euros spent on improvements and 30 million euros for work in Mojácar, Turre, Los Gallardos and Bédar. Cheap Shopping The Spanish Consumer body (OCU) carry out regular surveys on a variety of subjects, including shopping. The latest survey concludes that Almería City is amongst the 10 cities where shopping costs the least. The information is the result of a survey that included 971 shops and supermarkets in 51 cities, and 12 on-line supermarkets, collecting over 120,000 prices. A typical shopping basket of fresh and preserved products, totalling 132 items of well known brands, was priced up. The conclusion was that in Almería City the items would cost 7,000 euros annually, compared to 7,200 in Burgos, 7,600 in San Sebastián, and 7,800 in theParador Canary Mojácar Islands. The survey concluded that a saving of 48% was possible in branded goods, and 83% if the cheapest “own” goods were included. Shopping in large chains such as Alcampo, Carrefour, Mercadona and El Arbol made big differences, mostly due to “special offer” prices. Some shops in Murcia were the cheapest, but only by another 100 euros over the year.

Almería Airport Improvements It is anticipated that the work going on at Almería airport will be completed by mid December. The expansion of the airport was started 2 years ago and will increase the capacity of travellers from 800,000 to 2.5 million per year. It is considered that the improvements will be sufficient for at least the next 30 years. Even whilst the work has been undertaken, the number of flights into Almería has increased by 12% (one of the highest in Spain) and passenger numbers have increased by 3.6% with regard to the previous 12 months. Focus on Local News continued organised searches, and a sudden intensive search in July by 30 officers, not much more can be said. Lourdes, a qualified teacher, was at the time working at a service station in Roquetas. She left after her shift, having been quite normal with her workmates, and had laid clothes out on her bed to change later, for an agreed meeting with friends. Lourdes has not been heard from since, and neither her bank a/c, nor mobile have been used since. It is suspected that her Peugeot 206 was used between October 3rd and 6th, when it was found near the Roquetas bull-ring, badly parked, unlocked and with the ignition keys in place.

Albox Lidl

Up To 10% The annual time for measuring rainfall and water data is from October 1st to September 30th. This year, since October 1st 2009, the amount of water in reservoirs in Almería province at Cuevas del Almanzora and Benínar stands at 23 cubic hectometres, 10% of the total amount possible. This is much better than a year ago when it was only 5% and the Cuevas reservoir was officially declared “dead” and a “non-reservoir” for yet another year! Thanks to the rainfall and an injection of water from the Negratín reservoir in Granada province, it now holds 6.85% of the total capacity of 168 cubic hectometres. In Andalucía as a whole, the reserves of water have gone up from 34% to 74%.

The ‘Lidl’ supermarket chain has opened a new store on the outskirts of Albox on a 7,000 m2 plot with over 100 parking spaces. 30 new jobs have been created and the supermarket has cost 3.5 million euros to build. This latest Lidl supermarket is the 9th in Almería province and 2,500 people went through the doors during the first hours of opening.

Turre Splatter Manuel Rivas Herrador has been given permission by Turre town hall to operate a paintball activity in the “El Morrongo” area. Manuel has also planned for an archery area together with a restaurant and cafeteria. The mayor of Turre, Francisco Ortega, considers that Turre will benefit from this proposal for something different.

Los Vélez Projects Plans have been announced for projects in the Los Vélez region including a specialised centre for the treatment of Alzheimer and other neurological diseases. ‘Grupo Previndal Salud S.L.’ will build the centre at Chirivel at a cost of 5 million euros with a grant of 2 million. The specialised centre will be the first in Andalucía and has been designed to cater for 120 patients at any one time, with a staff of 72 persons. Also in Chirivel, a grant of just under 3 million euros has been promised towards the improvements to a mechanical and electrical business which needs 8 million euros for the expansion. The Almería church authorities are being given 50% of the 239,000 euros for the restoration of the parish church of San Isidro. The church recently had to shut as the deterioration of the church was causing major concerns. In María, the wine company ‘Tiburcio Motos’, has been given 20,000 euros towards the 50,000 needed for a new bodega or winery.

Annual Sea Plant Survey Volunteer scuba divers are getting ready to undertake the 2010 study of the underwater sea plant “Posidonia”. This plant thrives in areas of the Mediterranean sea where there is good underwater light, but it is an endangered species. The plants are growing at 16 key observation areas, and 10 of theses are off the Almería coast, and 4 of them at Cabo de Gata. The survey is to measure the present growth, or decay, the strength of the roots and the presence of any parasites or other problem. The annual survey in Andalucía has been given the name “Red Posimed”.

New Diesel Bio Plant for Almería? The company ‘Estoil Almería’ have put forward a project to convert agricultural waste into Diesel Bio, a fuel that is stated to be an improvement on the biodiesel at

Police and customs officials raided a warehouse on the industrial estate in Cantoria where it was claimed recycled oil and diesel were being mixed on a large scale and then sold as genuine diesel. The investigation had been going on for some time and it is claimed that between 2007 and 2010, 14 million litres of re-cycled lubricating oil was purchased from a company in Madrid. The oil was then mixed in Cantoria with diesel fuel and sold in Almería, Madrid, Cuenca, Valencia, Alicante and Murcia using their own tanker lorries. Two people considered as being the ringleaders were arrested, with one of the men living in Albox, and 9 other people stated to be involved. The amount of money de-frauded from the tax authorities is calculated to be 6 million euros.

Focus on Local News continued Helicopter Crash Health and Safety officials have fined the company ‘Inaer Helicoptéros Off-Shore’, who had the contract for the maintenance and training of the helicopter and crew of the ‘Helimer 207’ that crashed into the sea off Almería. The accident in January 2009 resulted in the death of three crew members and injury to a fourth. The crash resulted in the largest undersea rescue ever made in Spain, involving other crew and rescue vessels of ‘Salvamento Marítimo’, the rescue service that used this helicopter, and specialist robot equipment. Despite the fines which were with regard to crew training methods, the crew of the crashed helicopter were extremely experienced, and just a few kilometres from landing back in Almería, after a routine training exercise on a clear day. No information from the winch-man who survived the crash, or “black boxes”, or the recovered helicopter gave any explanation for the crash.

DNA Discoveries Watson and Crick were the dynamic duo who worked out the DNA structure and were awarded the Nobel prize that they shared with Maurice Watkins. Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958) took X-ray photographs that are credited with making the DNA structure much clearer for Watson and Crick. Interpreting X-ray diffraction pictures is a very skilled art, apart from the skill needed to take the photographs in the first place. The Mona Lisa Theft It is probably a misconception that when famous works of art are stolen they finish up in the hands of a private collector, and only he or she has the pleasure of viewing them. In 1911 however, an Italian workman, Vincenzo Perugia walked into the Louvre museum in Paris, took the Mona Lisa painting off the wall and carried it out. Security in those days was minimal. Two years later it was discovered in a trunk in his cheap lodging rooms in Florence. His explanation for stealing the painting was that Leonardo Da Vinci was an Italian painter and it was part of the cultural heritage of Italy, and should therefore be in Florence.

The Calar Alto site was opened by Juan Carlos, the king of Spain, in 1975, when a 1.2 metre telescope was commissioned. Tests in 2007 showed that Calar Alto was one of the “darkest” sites in the world and a 2009 study showed this applied to infra-red images as well, and the telescopes achieved an average of 70% of useful viewing time for scientific information, which is very high, night after night. David Barrado, a Spanish astronomer, has been director of the centre since March 2010. The German partners come from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy at Heidelberg, working with the Andalucía Institute of Astro Physics. One of the aims of the centre is to take high resolution photographs of space, and outstanding photographs sent to NASA are selected as “photographs of the day”. Calar Alto has had two photographs selected by NASA, since they started the photography. Calar Alto is, however, only 50km from Almería, as the crow flies, and city and coastal lights affect the night sky. The Astronomer David Galadí believes that the background light is now becoming a problem. Street lighting can be a large producer of stray light, and David has also identified a problem with the marble factories in Macael. He

The curved surface of telescope mirrors need re-coating every so often and engineers at Calar Alto have perfected a new way of doing this. The technique is so successful that the mirror for the ‘Herschel’ space telescope was sent to Calar Alto to be coated. This involved transporting the 12 ton mirror, 3.5 metres in diameter, from Toulouse in France to Almería and back again! The ‘Herschel’ telescope, with a mirror the same size as the largest one at Calar Alto, is one and a half times larger than the ‘Hubble’ mirror. The technique perfected in Almería is very advanced and requires that they create a complete high vacuum in a room of 90 cubic metres, where the mirror is placed. They then create a high electrical charge which vaporizes the 99.999 % pure aluminium used for the coating. In less than 80 seconds the mirror receives a perfect even coating, of about one thousand of a millimetre! Many mirrors and reflectors are now being treated at Calar Alto, including mirrors from Japan and all of Europe, for land or space telescopes.

They are very rare, but Almería now seems a favourite haunt. It’s not just the arrival of adults; a lot of them come here just to have babies, and probably as many as 4,000 couples. A good number prefer the Almería climate to where they have come from, so they swell the numbers too, and don’t look as if they are in any hurry to leave! The Junta de Andalucía estimate that more than 150 different species of birds can now be found in the wet-lands of Almería province, and 34 of these species are regularly nesting here, including some species that were considered, as far as anyone could tell, extinct. Almería province only has about 1% of its area that can be termed wet-lands or marshes, but theses marshes are perfect for many ducks and coots. Migration habits are also changing, probably due to a rise in temperature in Almería and dry and barren parts of Africa increasing. The Almería wet-lands are perfect for those birds who scurry in and out of the water, using lakes and small lagoons that are either permanent, or change with the season. Many of these aquatic birds come here for refuge, to find food, to nest and produce young birds, but more and more because they Santa Justa station at Seville have now adopted Almería as their new home. The Black-Headed Gulls now have their largest Spanish colonies in Almería, with over 1,000 breeding pairs spotted. The Common Avocet breeds freely here too, and 675 breeding pairs have been recorded, followed by the Black Winged Stilt (a member of the Stork family) with over 300 pairs. Where ornithologists start drooling is when they find even one pair of a very rare species. 17 species are recorded as being in great danger of becoming extinct in Spain, but examples of the Red Crested Pochard, Kentish Plover, and the GullBilled Tern, have all been seen here. The Straits of Gibraltar are a natural highway not just for ships and navies, but also birds a well. It is not too difficult to spot changes in migration patterns, and Almería seems to be high on the change of location list. The Trumpeter Finch has until now been a bird that migrated from North Africa regularly. It has been spotted along the Spanish coast, but now seems to live here! Two eagles, the Booted Eagle and the Short-Toed Eagle are spending much more time in Almería, and this is thought to be because temperatures are now a touch higher, and also there is less difference between winter and summer. Lastly, although not a marsh loving bird, a rare owl, the Scops Owl, now seems to think Almería is best too. Ornithology, or bird watching, has a large number of devotees who will travel far and wide to see unusual species or visit an area of great interest. The Almería Tourism Department recently travelled to the UK, to meet up with the British Ornithologist Society, who were in Rutland. Bird tourism is not as silly as it sounds!
