The modern fiesta and procession has up to 1,000 residents, both Spanish and other nationalities who represent different groups of Moors and Christians with their own areas in the village known as "cรกbilas". Mojรกcar, Garrucha, Roquetas, Cabo de Gata, San Juan de los Terreros, Aguilas and Villaricos have bonfires and fireworks on the beach, whilst Vera has a street fiesta with dance and music at the fountain (fuente) part of the town. Music follows nearly everywhere with singers and groups into the very late night. A busy few days to enjoy! There are no "Red" (on the calendar) National Fiesta days in June, but expect bleary eyes on June 24th.

Focus on Local News Driving With No License From May 1st 2008, driving without a licence became an offence that carried the same penalties as a driver with a licence who had lost all their points. The sanctions can be imprisonment from 3-6 months, fines that are payable for up to 2 years and community service from 31 to 90 days. 284 persons were stopped by traffic police in Almería province and found to be in this situation up to April 1st this year. This number includes people who have never had a licence, others driving when they had lost their licence or driving with the wrong licence, for example driving a car with a "moto"(scooter) licence. 185 of those stopped were driving cars and 90 scooters or motorbikes. Only 19 women were amongst these numbers. Current traffic police have access to a database of drivers from within their vehicles. Offenders have their vehicles immobilised and are given a date for a court appearance on the spot.

Not Just Pesetas! At the end of 2008, traders in the Nueva Andalucía district in Almería City put in practice a plan whereby old peseta notes could be used to purchase goods. The plan was unheard of in Spain previously, and generated great interest throughout Spain including Madrid. It also collected in 9 million pesetas that were changed into Euros by the Bank of Spain in Granada. Some peseta notes presented were not just a few years old, but went back to civil war days. Now the traders are starting a new scheme, not just pesetas but old sterling, dollar, Chinese yen and Swiss franc notes. Final details for the exchange of these currencies is being completed and the traders have set themselves a target of 30 million pesetas, apart from other currencies by the end of 2009.

A-7 Adra-Albuñol Motorway Open Again Following final tests, the 10 km stretch of motorway between Adra and Albuñol was reopened on May 25th. This followed a landslide on December 30th that damaged supporting pillars of a viaduct and the road was therefore closed. The closing of this stretch of motorway meant that all vehicle traffic had to revert to the old N 340 road and this is a particularly difficult alternative because of the high number of lorries encountered. Fears had been expressed that the repairs might not have been completed in time for the summer tourist season.

The newspaper printed his photograph and asked for "a thousand pardons". The pensioner, José Muñoz Muñoz, thought for a few hours he was a millionaire, and commented it was a bit of a fiasco when he arrived at the lottery office.

Pensioners Enjoy Solar Station Many pensioners come to Roquetas and Mojácar for holidays organised for town halls by the Spanish company 'Inserso'. Visits to the Tabernas Solar Energy Centre are proving very popular. Between October 2008 and the middle of May 3,000 pensioners have been to the centre to view the exhibition area and learn about the main areas of investigation and tour the site. Since the centre opened for visitors in May 2006 over 15,000 people have toured the facility.

2nd Trial of Produce by Sea In April, a trial was carried out whereby refrigerated containers of fruit and vegetables were shipped from Almería port to Dunkirk. This was considered successful and a regular sailing will follow. The 2nd trial is to take up to 40 complete lorries on an Italian Roll-on Roll-off Vessel from Almería to Port Vendres near Perpignam. If considered viable regular weekly sailings would start in October. Both these projects are aimed at reducing lorry Top Marks traffic and costs between Almería and France. The new Vélez Rubio Health centre has been featured in the prestigious architectural magazine 'New European Architecture A10', a reference magazine produced in Holland and printed in English. Eva Luque, the architect, is delighted that her design has been considered so worthy of mention and locals have already christened the centre the 'Guggenheim of Vélez Rubio' as it reminds them of the museum in Bilbao. Bédar to be Eco-Tourist Centre The Mayor of Bédar, Angel Collado, has put in motion plans to turn Bédar into a centre where tourists can learn about the Eco-sytem, the importance of the mines, now abandoned, and the general area. Thousands of spectators are expected in Almería apart from all the crews and technical support. The events receive worldwide television coverage. Albox and Partoloa are close to completion whilst Cantoria and Zurgena still have no completion date. The housing delegate, Luis Caparrós, has frequently visited the area and still maintains his original view that the only houses that can never be made legal are those built in river beds or specially protected land, or in a location where the surrounding terrain could pose a danger for the safety of the dwelling. Famous Sculptor Dies Juan Haro, an internationally recognised sculptor born in Cuevas del Almanzora, has died in Madrid age 76. Although born in Cuevas the family were forced to leave in search of work when Juan was only 52 days old. From an early age he showed great aptitude for sketching and design. Juan went to Morocco on military service and was greatly influence by the 'cubism' style. Mail Order Catalogue Aaron Montgomery Ward sent out his first mail order catalogue in 1872 - for his Montgomery Ward mail order business located at Clark and Kinzie Streets in Chicago. Rotating Apartments A company in Brazil, Morro Construction, has constructed a building (Suite Vollard) in which each floor can rotate 360 degrees. The building has 11 apartments and each apartment can spin individually in any direction. The entire living/working space, ceilings and outer walls revolve allowing a dynamic 360o view. One rotation takes a full hour, but the apartment owner can set the rotation speed through an apartment control panel. Facades are made of three different types of glass which give wonderful effects when building spins during the sunset. The cost of each apartment is 300,000 US dollars. This prototype has been in constant testing without failure for over 5 years!

New Car Purchase Incentive

s part of a package of measures designed to stimulate the economy, the Spanish Government has announced a new scheme for car purchase. If you have a car over 10 years old, or with 250,000 kilometres on the clock, you can buy a new eco-friendly car that emits less than 140grams of CO2, and get 2,000 euros off the price, providing the list price is not more than 30,000 euros. Your existing car is then scrapped. The new plan, called '2000E', was announced on May 12th and was due to start on June 1st for 1 year or a maximum of 200,000 vehicles. 500 euros was promised from the Government, 1,000 from the car manufacturer and 500 from the autonomous communities, such as Andalucia if you live in Almería province or Murcia if you live in Aguilas. The Government hoped that the communities would come up with their 500 euros as the Government can't force them to do so, and most of the communities only found out about it the day before! Some communities said they could not afford it, others already had their own plan but Andalucia agreed as a means of boosting the economy.

In April, new car registrations fell 47% in Andalucia as a region and 45% in Almería province, with annual vehicle sales dropping from 20,000 to 9,000. There are 75,000 new cars "in stock" throughout Andalucia and nearly 7,000 throughout Almería province. In good times, a new car may be in stock for 45 days before being sold but at present it may be waiting for a buyer for 180 days.

Within days the new plan was amended to come into place on May 17th as car dealers thought they might sell nothing until June 1st! Also, some car manufacturers said they might knock more than 1,000 euros off the price. So in Andalucia and Almería province you should get a minimum of 2,000 euros off, perhaps more.

If you are in the market for a new car with low emission figures, now is the time to talk to a dealer. The minimum of 2,000 euros reduction applies if you have an old car or one with heavy mileage, but even if you don't have such a vehicle dealers are very keen to sell. You may find you get a host of upgrades thrown in, and generous finance. Ask So will it work? Car manufacturers hope so and them!

So What About the Jellyfish?

n recent years there has been a claimed increase in the amount of jellyfish that have been observed in coastal areas, and some bathers have been stung. Almería has not been as badly affected as some other areas. Recently there have been various headlines about the "Portugese Man O' War", called "Las Carabelas Portuguesas" in Spanish, as groups have been reported off the Murcia coast. These fairly nasty creatures are not in fact Jellyfish at all, but they do look like jellyfish except that they have a "sac" that sticks out of the water like a sail. Ricardo Aguilar is the Director of the Spanish marine investigation team 'Oceana' and they regularly survey the Spanish coastline and chart different species of fish and other sea creatures. Ricardo is aware of the reports from Murcia but states that the 'carabelas' are normally found in the Atlantic. The ones seen off Murcia were in his opinion, blown off course through the Straits of Gibraltar as they are greatly affected by winds. To get as far as Murcia, and now beyond, they have already passed the Almería coast on their journey.

exaggerated and whilst a sting is nasty, and medical attention should be sought, they certainly don't kill healthy people. The odd one or two found in recent years around here have normally been 1015 cms in diameter with trailing tentacles of 30 cms, not 30 metres! So coming back to real jellyfish, "Medusas" in Spanish, what about these? There are several types from the "Common Jellyfish" classified as Low Hazard that are transparent and 10-15 cms in diameter, or the small "By-the-wind sailor" not bigger than 5 cms in diameter, transparent blue and harmless. The "Compass" jellyfish can be up to 30 cms in diameter, yellowish white with a nasty sting along with the "Rhizostome" types that are bluish white and can be huge, up to 100 centimetres, but rarely encountered. Marine biologists still do not fully understand jellyfish but generally agree that this summer there should be fewer as there has been enough rainfall to dilute the saltiness of the sea around the coast. The Spanish Institute of Marine Science in Barcelona is conducting studies of jellyfish and trying to find what affects their breeding and lifestyle, but like any marine investigation there is still a lot to be learnt. They are not even totally convinced that jellyfish numbers are increasing along the coast. The Spanish Ministry of the Environment is responsible for monitoring and acting against jellyfish and their task force 'Perseo' collects information direct or from fishing boats, sailors and diving schools. They publish an information pamphlet about jellyfish in English.

In Almería province jellyfish can be a nuisance, but not normally a hazard. Advice if stung is to bathe the area with salt water, apply ice (but not directly on the skin) and not to scratch or rub the area. Seek medical advice if headaches, cramps or nausea follow. Sunscreen lotion or light clothing seem to reduce the chance of stings.

Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) is a street kid (or "slumdog") who has landed an appearance on India's version of the hit TV game show WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? Jamal exceeds expectations on the show, and the producers alert the police after they become suspicious of his methods. The young contestant is subsequently arrested and is interrogated at the hands of a nameless police inspector (played by Bollywood star Irfan Khan). As the interrogation proceeds, Boyle tells Jamal's story through harrowing flashbacks that both show the terrible poverty of Mumbai and help explain how he knew the answers to the MILLIONAIRE questions. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is a tightly woven story that has been expertly edited into shape. The contrast between Jamal's upbringing and his chance of escaping it on the show are adeptly juxtaposed. Mumbai is portrayed as a place of terrifying poverty and unforgettable brutality, and Jamal and his brother get into a never-ending succession of challenging situations. The way Boyle ties together Jamal's life experiences with his answers on the show is quite brilliant, and the film really does run the full gamut of emotions as we see him growing up, falling in love, coming close to death, and teetering on the brink of escaping from his terrible predicament. The film belongs to Boyle's cast, who are mostly unknown outside of India. Patel, in particular, gives a startlingly mature performance that audiences are likely to remember long after the credits role on this affecting feature

Mojácar Moors & Christians 2009 Programme Friday June 19th 10pm - The various troop parties assemble at the 'fuente' (fountain) below Mojácar village. 10.30pm - The troops move up to the village where the presence of hostile troops and their captains is announced. Bands strike up, muskets are fired and fireworks set off. 11pm - The troops enter into Mojácar and the opening speech (Pregon) of the fiesta takes place with ambassadors presented. Midnight - The "Cábilas" open , troop camps are established, bands play and the fiesta continues. Saturday June 20th 6.30pm - On Mojácar beach, troops on horses parade and the reinforcement Moors symbolically arrive by sea, with much firing of muskets. A medieval tournament follows where mounted Moor & Christians vie to win the "princesses" of the day. Afterwards the troops march to the Commercial Centre. 10pm - In the village, the "Cábilas" and camps open again and festivities continue. Sunday June 21st 12 noon - Moors & Christians fire muskets on the beach. In the village the medieval market finishes at 2pm. 7pm - Grand Procession of Christians followed by Moors lead off in full costume from the village.

Good System An Australian from the outback was terrible overweight. The flying doctor on one of his visits put him on a diet. The man says, "Yes, and I killed the owner." At this point the officer is getting irate. "You what?" "She's in the boot if you want to see." The Officer looks at the man and slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up. Within minutes, five police cars show up, surrounding the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half-drawn gun. The senior officer says, "Sir, could you step out of your vehicle please!" The man steps out of his vehicle. "Is there a problem, sir?" "One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner." "Murdered the owner?" The officer responds, "Yes, could you please open the boot of your car please?" The man opens the boot, revealing nothing but an empty boot. The officer says, "Is this your car sir?" The man says, "Yes" and hands over the registration papers. The officer, understandably, is quite stunned. "One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving licence." The man digs in his pocket revealing a wallet and hands it to the officer. The officer opens the wallet and examines the licence. He looks quite puzzled. "Thank you, sir. One of my officers told me you didn't have a licence, stole this c a r, a n d m u r d e r e d t h e o w n e r. " The man replies, "I bet you the lying bastard told you I was speeding, too!"

Proof A dog is truly a man's best friend. If you don't believe it, just try this experiment. Lock your dog and your wife in the boot of the car for an hour. When you open the boot, which one is really happy to see you? Good Try! I was in Tesco and saw a guy off Crimewatch who is wanted for several rapes. I tackled him to the ground and punched him unconscious. The police arrived and arrested me. Apparently they use actors on the show. Devotion A guy and his mate are playing golf one morning. One of them is just about to chip onto the fourth green when a long funeral procession comes along the road near the course. The golfer stops in mid-swing, takes off his golf cap, closes his eyes and bows down in obvious prayer. His friend said, "Well, that is the nicest and most thoughtful thing I have ever seen in my life. You truly are a good and kind man."
