Summer Heat!

he weather forecast for the next two months is that there will be a Spanish heatwave! Not “normal” July and August weather but “stinking hot!” Last year was also very hot, but perhaps it will rain instead this year! A very large amount of Spaniards came for the San Juan fiestas, aided by the fact that the official holiday was a Friday, and in some places such as Madrid, a public holiday. On the coast, some smaller hotels had to dust off their “completo” signs, showing that they were full, although prices were shaved to the bone. July 16th is an important fiesta day, particularly in coastal areas where the Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of fishermen. Religious myths and legend tell us that the prophet Elias went to live at Mount Carmelo near Galilee, and other visiting monks who visited him became known as “Carmelites”. A religious group or “order” was formed and the Virgin Mary is said to have given a cloak to the English head of the order, during a vision. The Virgin (Mary) Carmen also is known as ‘Virgin of the Cloak’. Fishermen take a statue of

her to sea to ask for protection for the year ahead, and a good catch. Carmen is also honoured as “La Reina de Los Mares”, (Queen of the Sea). Members of the public get invited to go out to sea in fishing boats to help with the celebrations. Adra, Almerimar, Almería, La Isleta de Moro (Cabo de Gata), Carboneras and Garrucha have this day as a fiesta, as well as inland places such as Arboleas, Los Gallardos and Purchena. Turre has their own special “gipsy” fiesta on July 25th in honour of St James the Apostle. In August, the Feast of the Assumption takes place on August 15th and official offices, banks, lawyer’s offices and town halls will be shut. Almería city celebrates their fortnight of festivities including bull fights, street markets, a fair, street entertainment and general merriment. Some businesses will not start again until September 5th! Garrucha has another fiesta and children’s fair to celebrate the Fiesta of San Joaquin, one of their patron saints. In general, a village or town will have one male and one female patron saint. Many places choose their saints’ days to coincide with good or reasonable weather, and August is ideal, not like April when the Easter processions were again lashed with rain this year. Also, as children are on holiday from school in August, very late nights are not so important. Now that the May Municipal elections are over, mayors and mayoresses (in the case of Mojácar) are studying the council books, and making the normal cries of dismay! Some councillors not now in power may have a loss of at least 2,500 euros a month (but 14 payments are made a year) as well as perks. Focus on Local News Demonstrations A large demonstration took place in Almería City on Sunday, May 21st, with an estimated 3,000 “Almerienses” (people living in Almería province) taking part. The demonstration was one in a continuing series entitled 15-M, as the initial demonstrations in various parts of Spain started n May 15th, 1 week prior to the municipal elections on May 22nd throughout Spain. The gatherings, now that the elections are over, are seeking to put pressure on the new councillors holding office, not to forget unemployment, mortgage problems, nor the concern about the Euro Zone. The demonstrations are also designed to put pressure on the Spanish Socialist (PSOE) government to make changes at national level. School Absenteeism Huércal Overa is working closely with the Department of Education to combat absenteeism in schools and a recent meeting was called to discuss progress and future plans. Absenteeism is a particular problem with non-Spanish children and the town hall has been given a grant of 2,500 euros to enable more work to be carried out in this area. A team has been put together in previous years comprised of a council member dedicated to this problem, education representatives including teachers from various schools, and an assistant inspector from the Policía Local who visit children and their parents where there is continued absenteeism. This school year, 18 families have been visited regularly, including 8 from the secondary school “Albujaira”. The local police have been involved in 12 of these cases, as continued absenteeism can become a matter for educational tribunals with parents being held responsible. Mortgage Repossessions In 2007, in Almería province 638 properties were reclaimed by the banks who lent the money. In 2008 this rose to 1,742 and in 2009 shot up to 3,463. In 2010 this levelled at 3,292, and figures for 2011 are not yet of course available. Throughout Spain, the body that deals with these

mortgage repossessions, known as the CGFP, states that in the period from 2007 to the present time there are 271,000 cases either dealt with or pending, and by 2012 this number may have risen to 500,000. Apart from the anguish and financial suffering, there is an added twist in Spain that after an auction of the property the banks will then claim 50% of the valuation fee, and pursue the mortgagees, now without this home, for the balance of the money lent. They will try to get an attachment of earnings, a claim against a monthly salary, or by other means, so that the “mortgage” can still go on for years. A proposal being considered by the CGFP is that once a property is auctioned off, and the bank gets this money, the debt should die with the property, as happens in other EU countries.

Macael Stone & Marble A conference has been held between the Macael marble and stone producer s and 20 representatives from 11 countries involved in the importation, sales, commercialization of marble and stone products, as well as interior design and kitchen specialists. The aim of this conference was to acquaint the visitors with the possibilities that exist with Macael products. The event was sponsored by the Spanish Export department, the Association of Andalucían Marble Producers, and the Spanish Department of Innovation. Marble and stone sales are up 13% on this time last year and the producers in Almería account for 80% of the total exports in Andalucía for this type of product. Almería Sports Complex Plans for a major sports stadium and complex in Almería city, near the swimming club and the new “Fiestas” area were first put forward in 2007. These plans have now surfaced again with the proposal that the city council donate the land needed to the Almería Sports Club. The original ambitious project was costed out at 80 million euros, but the new more modest plans envisage a total cost of 7 million euros. If the project goes ahead there would be football pitches, 7 a side pitches, a gymnasium and commercial premises. Electricity Prices Up Again The electricity tariff TUR that many homes are contracted to has been increased from July 1st by 1.5%. 17 million households have this tariff, and the 1.5% does not apply to those households that have a “day” and “night” tariff, who will pay 3.8%. This is stated to amount to an increase of 50 centimos on a normal tariff monthly bill, or 1 euro on a two month bill. The Spanish Industry Minister Miguel Sebastian had promised that any more increases after last January would be frozen, but announced that this had been impossible to do, and promised that there would be no further increase this year. Apart from the electricity increases, a12.5 kilo gas bottle goes up by 5.7% to 14 euros 80 centimos. Torrecárdenas Fire The Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería was informed that there was a major fire, and evacuation procedures were to be put into place on Thursday, June 30th. The fire was stated to be on the 6th floor with many patients in rooms, some in isolation wards and some with reduced mobility. The fire alert started at 10.30 in the morning and lasted for 25 minutes when it was announced that the fire in room 607 had been

put out. The whole alert was in fact an exercise and leaflets were given out to visitors and other inmates telling them what was happening. Entry through the main access doors was stopped as part of the exercise. This was the first fire alert at the hospital and professionals from the Fire brigade, Civil Protection, Local Police, National police and teams from the health and emergency telephone centres 061 and 112 took part. The various command centres coordinating the exercise stated that it had been an invaluable test of current procedures for such an emergency, and lessons had been learnt as to what needed modifying.

120 Again On the early hours of June 1st, transport workers and Junta de Andalucían staff peeled off 350 of the110 km/hr speed signs on the A7 motorway and the A92. This was after the Spanish Government had decided to revert to the 120km/hr limits brought down to 110 km/hr in March. The 110km/hr limit had been imposed in March as a measure to save fuel. The Guardia Civil Traffic centres sent technicians to alter the fixed radar points. There was a heated debate in the Spanish Parliament prior to amending the limit, with same strong pressure to take the speed limits up to 140km/hr, as well as those who wanted it to be kept at 110 km/hr. As the price of crude oil has come down it was considered not viable to keep this limit of 110 km/ hr, criticized by many groups such as frequent motorway transport

Focus on Local News continued companies. July 1st was also the start of the summer holiday period and the “Summer Operation 2011” came into force. The number of traffic movements in and out of Almería was estimated as 350,000 with 250,000 in Almería City. The Almería traffic centre monitors all the major road exit and entry points, whilst the Traffic Centre in Málaga provides 24 hr coverage for all ‘S.O.S’ telephones in Málaga, Granada and Almería provinces. Since July 1st 2006 when the “points” system came in, 5,171,984 persons had lost points up to June 14th this year. The total number of points amounts to 17,497,438 and 48% of offences related to speeding.80% of those people who lost points were male drivers.

The Almanzora Motorway On June 30th the necessary paperwork was declared completed for the finishing of the motorway from Purchena to Huércal-Overa, and therefore joining up with the A7 motorway. The awarding of the contract is stated to be done, “within the month” at a cost of 150 million euros. The mayors of the various municipalities involved have greeted this news with a certain degree of caution. The mayor of Olula del Rio has stated that any delays would be a major setback, whilst the mayor of Albanchez is more positive and states this is an optimistic step. This promise coincided with the opening of the 3 kilometre stretch from the A7 to the Zurgena junction. The mayor of Arboleas thinks that this promise of a new major stretch is nothing more than an election promise. The motorway has been nicknamed the “marble motorway” as it is intended to drastically cut down journey times to Macael. The Association of Marble Companies has greeted the news with enthusiasm, but commented that any delays would be very serious, and hoped that the Albox-Cucador link would be open very soon. The representative of the Almanzora Tourist Board thinks that this news is very important and is vitally needed for the tourist industry. The original promise from Magdalena Álvarez when she was Minister of Transport was that the whole motorway link would

Fenugreek seeds

The Cucumber Saga Spain suffered terribly from the belief in Germany that Spanish cucumbers, and those sent from a major exporter in Roquetas, were responsible for the e.coli outbreak that is so virulent it has caused the death of 48 people in Germany and France. Apart from not buying cucumbers there was a knock-on effect for all Spanish vegetables, until it was announced that the cucumbers were not responsible. Whilst the EU has agreed a payment for damage suffered, Spanish exporters of vegetables consider it is not enough and the Spanish Tourism Minister believes that tourism from Germany in particular will suffer as well. It is estimated that 3,500 hectares in Almería province were not cultivated from the start of the false alarm and12 million kilos of vegetables were tipped as there was no market. The direct cost of lost produce and sales is calculated as 61 million euros, without labour costs. On July 1st the European Health Authority issued an alert to seven EU members including Spain that they firmly believed that fenugreek seeds from Egypt were now the prime suspect and alerted the 7 countries that consumption or sale of Egyptian fenugreek seeds should not continue, subject to a full scientific investigation. Focus on Local News continued appetite and the amount of milk in breast feeding mothers. Fenugreek is also a frequent part of cooking additives. The alert concerns seeds shipped in 2009 to France and in 2010 to Germany. Flamenco Centre A collection of flamenco artifacts, vinyl discs and other objects such as posters or programmes is being collected by the Flamenco organization “El Morato”. The collection will be named after Constantino Diaz Benete, one of the oldest flamenco artists in the Almería area. Constantino Diaz is founder of the “El Morato” association and is honorary president. A centre is planned with a library, audio recordings of the flamenco performers, videos and a projector to view old films. Archive recordings on vinyl and recording tape will be converted to digital recordings, along with the digitaliusation of photographs. The Andaulcían Centre for Flamenco has agreed to help with the preserving of this vital history and provide technical assistance with regard to photographs and recordings. Niño de las Cuevas, one of the most highly regarded flamenco artists in the area has explained that they have recordings going back 30 years including such renowned performers as Enrique Morente, Diego Clavel, Rocio Segura, Sorrroche, Antonio de Patrocina, José de la Mena and many others. Almería Flights Almería airport had 152 flights programmed for the first week of July, the start of the Spanish holiday season. These flights brought in 16,400 passengers. Saturday, July 2nd and Monday 4th had 36 flights each and 11,000 passengers flew in over the weekend and Monday. July & August Sales The official date for the summer sales is July 1st, and there are strict guidelines. Clothes, both for leisure and school are the main sales items that buyers look for. Inspectors are looking for proof that a 50% discount is in fact 50% and the inspections are stepped up towards the end of

August when shoppers are thinking about late bargains, and a wily retailer may try and edge their prices up. The average per head of population that is spent on sales items, mostly clothes and shoes, is 60 euros.

Green peace opposite the Algarrobico

Hotel Algarrobico ‘Greenpeace’, the ecological pressure group that discovered the Hotel Algarrobico late in the day just before it was finished, have asked the new mayor of Carboneras to veto any further action. The mayor, Salvador Hemández, has replied that there is still a considerable amount of court cases being heard or scheduled. He went on to say that any decision taken that might result in the hotel being finished was way outside the jurisdiction of the council. He went on to say that no-one knew for sure if the hotel was legal or not, but meanwhile Carboneras had an unfinished project that was not giving the town any benefit, neither that of employment nor tourism. He said that any developer or promoter or hotel chain was welcome to come to Carboneras and provide badly needed work for local people, providing that any hotel was legal. Land Fish Farms An Almería businessman is starting a land fish farm, under the plastic greenhouse covers. Ignacio Flores of ‘Phycoelementa’ is due to start production in September using a breed of fish known in Spain as “Tilapia”, a fish similar to sole. The basic equipment is a tank, a water pump to circulate the water and a filter similar to that used

Focus on Local News continued in swimming pools. Their technical director states that the water can be recycled and the fish will be fed on cereal products, so no other fish will be killed for food. The system is considered ideal for agricultural growers who are experiencing a crisis. The plastic green houses are ideal for this type of fish farm according to claims made by the company. The plastic is stated to reduce UV rays, help control temperature and cause minimum water evaporation loss. The company was formed in 2009 and has factories in Murcia, Andalucía and Morocco where bio-fertilizers are produced, apart from another bio product designed to increase the grease content of bio-diesel fuel. Finally The Mayor of Carboneras, Salvador Hernándex and the Mayoress of Mojácar, Rosa María Cano were officially inaugurated on July 1st, following a decision of a High Court Judge in Granada to dismiss a complaint from Carboneras, and refer a complaint from Mojácar to a Criminal Court Judge. (See p 36). The procedure for the inauguration of a mayor or mayoress is that all the councillors elected, whether in power or opposition, vote for their choice of council leader. When there is already an agreed majority this is a matter of protocol, but is done anyway. In Carboneras, Salvador Hernández took over from Cristobal Fernández who has been either mayor or councillor for 26 years. Cristobal has previously stated he would retire, but then changed his mind. He is an elected councillor in opposition but is expected to surrender this seat within the next few days. In Mojácar, Rosa María Cano has been the mayoress for the last 4 years, so the procedure of the outgoing mayor or mayoress handing over the mace of office did not apply. In a radical break with tradition and protocol, Rosmari, as she is known by the Spanish community, decided not to hold her investiture in the council chambers, but instead chose the Mojácar Multiple Use Centre. Three opposition members from the Unión Mojaquera 10 party, and the opposition councillor from the Ciudadanos Europeos party did not

attend in protest at this snub to convention. The PSOE council member in opposition, Manuel Zamora, attended and pleaded for austerity in any future undertakings, whilst Jessica Simpson, the young British councillor for the ‘Mojácar Positiva Se Mueve’ party (She originates from Nottingham) pledged that she would work with her party to improve Mojácar from an opposition viewpoint.

Carmen Chacón in Herat

Compassionate Visit Carmen Chacón, the Spanish Minister of Defence, born and bred in Almería province, visited Herat in Afghanistan following the death of two Spanish military. Obviously emotional she talked to the other members of the Spanish troops serving in the area. The bomb that killed and injured the troops in a land vehicle is thought to have been at least a bomb of 30 kilos, the largest ever encountered by the Spanish contingent. The two dead soldiers were given a military funeral in the Canary Islands base ‘General Alemán Ramírez’, and awarded a military medal of merit. New Electricity Providers Since last year, electricity companies can vie for customers, although they have all kept fairly quiet about this facility. A new electricity supply company has been inaugurated in Almería province under the name of ‘Fenienergia’. The new company has been formed from companies already involved in the installation and maintenance of the electricity

Focus on Local News continued supply and another company involved with electricity supply and telecommunications. This company is the eighth to be formed in Spain and the fourth in Andalucía as alternative companies to the large multinationals. 30 installation engineers have started work and the number will continue to grow as new clients are signed up. The managing director of the company is Isabel Reija. New Flamenco Association A flamenco association called ‘El Palmito’ has opened its doors in the lighthouse area of Las Salinas, Cabo de Gata. 30 members have started off this association that plans to hold flamenco concerts and a club house for members. Exhibitions and workshops are planned to keep alive the professions of fishing and salt production. Workshops are planned for artists together with walks and guided tours of the area amongst their plans. During July, there is an exhibition of

photographs by Miguel Hidalgo featuring photographs of Las Salinas Church. The flamenco director is Rafael ‘Fafi’ Molina, a well known performer in Almería flamenco circles. Vehicle Sales The fall in vehicle sales during June was so great that automobile retailers and manufacturers are describing it as “historic” as the number of sales fell to a level not seen since the 1980s. 31% less vehicles were registered with a drop off in private purchasers, rental companies and commercial companies. López Madrid, president of the Spanish society of motor vehicle imports, stated that companies had made up slightly for the fall in private purchasers, whilst rental companies were in the majority of cases still buying new vehicles for fleets. He went on to say that many outlets were only keeping afloat by post sales services from previous years and sales of second hand cars.

So Now You Know... Mobile ‘Phones The first cell ‘phone, the invention that turned into mobile ‘phones, was invented by Rudy Krolopp who worked for ‘Motorola’. It was called the “Dyna TAC 8000X”, a bit of a mouthful, and the “mobile” weighed 2 pounds. Gradually technology improved and major telecommunication companies increased their coverage and signed up with important manufacturers to market a package. It is thought that there are about 4 billion mobile ‘phones in use, worldwide, and about 3 million people buy a mobile every day. The “freeing” of the ‘phones that are sold by major companies as a package, is an enormous growing business. LPs Until 1948, to play records you used a disc that shattered if dropped and revolved at 78 revolutions per minute, in the early days with a “Gramophone” that you had to wind up each time you played a “78”. The amount of music you could get on was very limited, so a classical symphony might need five 78’s recorded on both sides. In 1948, Paul Goldmark patented his idea of a Long Playing record, using a vinyl mixture. Apart from playing at 33 revs/min, it was slightly flexible, almost unbreakable, and with high quality sound. 10 million LPs are still sold annually to audio devotees. 45s came later, partly for jukeboxes. Live Music Early guitar equipment and live music electronics could be dangerous, with the “earth” removed for a performance to stop hum, and then not reconnected afterwards, or sometimes there was no “earth” connection at all! In 1972, Leslie Harvey died from an electric shock on stage, and is thought to be the first fatality of live music. Leslie was playing with “Stone the Crows” at the time. Keith Relf, a singer in the early days for “The Yardbirds” was electrocuted by his guitar whilst practicing in his basement in 1976. Ramon Barrero, famous for playing a miniature harmonica, swallowed it and died in 1994.

Spam (not the sort you eat) In 2010, it was calculated that 60 billion emails were being sent on average each day, but only 3% were not “spam” emails. Spammers may get only 1 response to every 10 million emails they generate to run automatically, but the 1 reply can make them a profit if it contains bank details. It is calculated that Spam when sent and read, needs 33 billion kilowatt hours of energy, and produces 17 million tons of CO2. The electricity used could provide power to 2.4 million homes, catering for all their electrical needs, including every appliance, and computers. Noah’s Ark According to the bible, Noah built an ark and took a pair of each animal to safety when the floods came in. Paintings show him with a wide range of species. In the actual bible, sheep are mentioned 45 times, but goats 88 times. Dogs get a mention 14 times, whilst lions are referred to on 89 occasions. Our friend the domestic cat gets not a single mention! Pigs are supposed to be the fourth most intelligent animal, but only receive a mention twice. A sheep, a duck, and a rooster hen were the first animals to go in a hot balloon. In Denmark today, there are twice as many pigs as people, and pork seems to have been the most widely eaten meat for eve, throughout the world. New York Religion New York has more diverse inhabitants and religions than any other place in the world. The 8.4 million inhabitants speak 800 different languages and dialects throughout the five boroughs. 83% of New Yorkers claim they have religious beliefs and go to some centre of religion. 70% of the population state they are Christians, with 40% of those being Catholics and 30% Protestants. 2000 churches and 4000 informal places of worship exist. The Episcopal Cathedral of St John the Divine is still the world’s largest Cathedral. 12% are Jewish, more Jews than in Jerusalem City limits, and there are 1 million Muslims.

Residents in Almería province, particularly near Cortijo Grande, Cabrera and Turre often see theses tortoises, and may well adopt them as pets. In Mojácar, they are more evident than normal, one explanation being that the Turre fires forced them further to the coast. The keeping of these tortoises as domestic pets is prohibited by

A lawyer, presently acting for 30 of the landowners, refers to a University of Almería study that stated Cabrera was the perfect site for the native tortoises. The problem with Sierra Cabrera, mostly privately owned, is the fires. “INFOCA”, the body that tries to prevent and fight fires can “ask” private landowners to carry out fire prevention work, and give them grants, but they cannot force this work to be done.

1966 And All That

n June 20th, experts from the Spanish Climate Change body together with members of ‘CIEMAT’, the Spanish nuclear and radiation body came to Palomares, after pressure by the Mayor Jesús Caicedo. And this is why they all came: On January 17th, 1966, an American B52-G bomber from The USAF Strategic Air Command was flying on a routine cold war ‘Operation Chrome Dome’ mission, and required refueling over southern Spain. It carried four Mk 28 thermonuclear bombs. Over Palomares it linked up with a US KC 135 tanker, but on Jan 17th they got it all wrong! The surviving pilot recalled, “We came in behind the tanker, and we were a little bit fast, and we started to overrun him a little bit. There is a procedure they have in refueling where if the boom operator feels that you’re getting too close and it’s a dangerous situation, he will call, 'Break away, break away, break away.' There was no call for a breakaway, so we didn’t see anything dangerous about the situation. But all of a sudden all hell seemed to break loose”.

It was a very windy day and the boom and refueling cup hit the wing of the B52 causing major damage and a fire. The B52 fell into the sea, after jettisoning the four Mk 28 bombs, and four crew men out of seven parachuted out, one landing in Palomares cemetery, and three in the sea. The KC 135 tanker, engulfed in flames from the fuel, plummeted to the ground killing all four crew members. Meanwhile, three of the bombs landed on Palomares and the fourth one was assumed to be in the sea, after the US found part of a parachute mechanism. Two of the nose cones of the three bombs on land, split open on impact and radioactive plutonium, the “fuel” used to start a nuclear chain reaction, drifted in the wind. The US Navy sent 34 vessels, 4 mini-subs and 150 divers! Some of the ships collected wreckage, and another contaminated soil. After two and a half months working on a “probability” grid chart, they hadn’t found the bomb. It was still very much a “cold-war” situation, and the US authorities were Mark 28 bombs being loaded

petrified that the Russians would come and find the bomb first. Francisco Simó was a 38 year old fisherman from Aguilas, and on January 17th he was fishing in his boat off Palomares. He saw the explosions and watched a parachute come down, with what he thought was a person, but it disappeared into the sea. He then rescued one of the US crew members, and took him to land. Eventually, Simó, (just a humble fisherman!) told the divers that he must have seen the actual bomb come down, and pinpointed the location. An ‘Alvin’ submersible then found the bomb and recovered it intact. Francisco Simó became nicknamed “Paco de la Bomba”, and by the US “Frankie bomb”. Simó actually claimed 1% salvage rights, after he saw on television that the bomb was worth 20 billion dollars. 1% was a nice 20 million, but the US settled out of court and Spanish sources believe he got 367,000 pesetas, about 6,000$, worth 2,200 euros 45 years later, (and a framed certificate). 747 US military and civilians spent 10 weeks in Palomares and amongst other things filled 4,879 55gallon drums with contaminated soil, shipped back to the USA. Another US team came to build a desalination plant in recompense.

Manuel Fraga, Angier Duke and others

March 8th 1966. Donning swimming trunks they first swam in the sea opposite the Mojácar Parador hotel for the press, and then Fraga and Duke briefly entered the water at the “Quita pellejos” beach at Palomares for more photos. Manuel Fraga went into the history books as a result, as number one prize idiot!

The present fairly outspoken contact between Spain and the US is over an estimated 50,000 m3 of further contaminated soil. Spain wants it removed and taken away. The US is reluctant to take on the enormous cost. In 2008, CIEMAT found two trenches where the Americans had buried radioactive soil, and expanded the “no-go” area. The Spanish government and the mayors of Palomares and Cuevas think it is time a permanent solution to the contamination is made. In March 2009, ‘TIME’ magazine identified the Palomares accident as one of the world's "worst nuclear disasters".

Stamped: ‘Made in Villaricos’

illaricos has always been understood to have been a centre of activity for the Romans and Phoenicians, but now it is being revalued as a very important place.

The obelisk on the other hand shows the influence that was still present Villaricos, known in Roman times as “Villa de Baria”, in other important areas of sculpture, as a symbol is being re-evaluated owing to the number of high of burial. quality sculptures and pottery ware which indicate that a school of sculpture was probably flourishing here with master craftsmen and pupils. If this is so, then there had to be a rich patron and it is now being discussed that perhaps Villaricos was home to a local and powerful king, or kings. Scholars who are studying this period think that after Cádiz, the area that has the most advanced sculptures is Villaricos, not just in the rest of Spain, but also in the Mediterranean coastline. Martín Almagro-Gorbea holds a chair in Prehistory and has a Doctorate in the studies of History and Artforms from the Spanish Royal Academy of History. He is considered an authority in this field with many archaeological digs to his credit. He has recently published a book, “La Escultura Fenicia en España” (“Phoenician Sculpture of Spain”), in collaboration with Mariano Torres Ortiz. This was the subject of a lecture and question session organized by the Institute of Almerían Studies recently. It is now thought that ancient sculptures are possibly figures of dead kings in Villaricos, otherwise a school of sculpture of this importance would have not flourished like it did.

Sculptors in Villaricos are now thought to have gradually evolved their own style that became known as the “Spanish School” of sculpture. If Villaricos was at the forefront of this progression in style, it must have been a very important area religiously, socially or economically. The Spanish Coastguards

or those of us who live by the sea, whilst we eat, sleep, play or work our coastline is being monitored 24 hours a day. This service is known as “Salvamento Maritimo de Almería” in this area.

In 2010, the Almería centre responded to 296 emergencies, almost one a day! This was 81% of their work and 293 craft were involved with a total passenger count of 2,270 persons for the emergency call outs.

To coincide with their summer offensive that is aimed to stop bad nautical preparation and outings and to advise persons such as jet-ski or windsurf sports people, the service has released figures to show how busy they are! The Almería centre is situated in Almería port and requires two controllers to be on duty at anyone time, over three shifts, 24 hours a day. Over 600 sq kms of water is monitored including some coastal waters off Granada, the Mar Alborán and seas off Murcia province. Commercial craft are monitored and directed, and at peak times this amounts to over 3,000 vessels a month. The coastguards have their own specialized sea craft, including heavy tugs, vessels with lifting gear and specialized rescue craft with submergible robot submarines. Emergency plans include those for a major collision with cargo involved, oil tanker disasters and the rescue of passengers from ferry vessels. They have a priority call out service if needed that can call on Guardia Civil vessels, customs units, and Spanish Navy or Air force, or they can call in help from cargo vessels or even fishing boats if in the right place when needed. Their own craft are aided by an aircraft and helicopter with fully equipped search and rescue teams and equipment.

The rest of their time they dealt with response to changes in the weather- potent factors if at sea, and security patrols. The Almería centre, along with the one at Motríl, receives many indications and warnings that “boat people” are trying to get to Spain for a better life. Often, although having paid large sums of money for the privilege to take a place in overcrowded inflatables without special equipment and insufficient food and drink, they get into difficulties. This work is therefore considered a high priority as apart from the humanitarian side, the coastguards are trying to save lives, including those of pregnant women, children and babies. The coastguards have a sea monitoring system that combines sensors and radar, designed to identify even small craft. Apart from these systems, cargo boats usually advise the coastguards if they see a small craft first, as they don’t wish to see it rammed or swamped by other large craft. If possible, they will often pick them up themselves. The Spanish Red Cross services have specialized units that are multilingual and deal quickly with hypothermia, sunburn or dehydration, as well as simple health checks, with occasional assisted births. They will go out on a coastguard vessel and form a reception team.

1,881 people were rescued or intercepted during 2010 from 74 boats, trying to find a better life in Spain. Adult passengers are flown back to their country of origin, usually after being interrogated as to who they paid and how much. Young children are usually sent to centres where attempts are made to re-unite them with their families, if travelling without relatives. Courts are now happy to hand out long prison sentences to those who trade with the lives of others. In 2010, 82 pleasure craft called out the coastguards, often through lack of preparation, inadequate sea charts, lack of checking for weather changes, or just stupidity. To help combat this, Salvamento Marítimo Almería and Simón López, the senior officer, have put out a “microsite” available to be downloaded to mobiles with internet, suggesting a series of good practices. The information is on www.seguridadnautica.es, and there is also a larger link to the main coastguard service www.salvamentomaritimo.es. Leaflets are also given out at ports and in

specialized magazines to try and make pleasure craft owners appreciate the consequences of “messing around in boats”. Pleasure boat sailors, wind surfers and other small sporting craft users amounted to 4,707 persons who received advice at sea or even rescue. So like every coastguard service they respond to pleasure craft accidents, blunders, or running out of fuel situations. Try not to let it be you, if sea going activities are one of your hobbies. They are pretty busy!

Competition

Creamfields Andalucía 2011 will take place in Jerez de la Frontera, (Cádiz), on August 13th & 14th. ’The Progidy’ head the list of performers and the first 3,000 tickets are 50 euros. For more info see: www.creamfieldsandalucia.com

The ‘Julián Arcas’ guitar competition and concerts have been put back to October 16th until November 12th. The Cajamar Foundation have done this to avoid clashes with other events, and plan a series of complementary events. Subscription for competitors is open until October 24th. The age groups are below 13 years of age for the ‘Antonio de Torres’ prize, below 18 years of age for the ‘José Tomás’ prize, and any age above 18 for the ‘Julián Arcas’ prize. Prize money ranges from 120 euros to 10,000 euros, along with a recording contract and participation in other events.. The initial rounds will take place in the Almería school of music, the school of dance and the Roquetas Teatro. Dance The II Festival of Dance, Almería city, July 14th -17th. The Granadian ballerina Eva Yerbabuena opens the festival with her ballet “Lluvia” (rain) on July 14th at 10pm in the Maestro Padilla Auditorium. Friday 15th is the II Concursal International de Baille Flamenco, a compettion at the Teatro Apolo, 4pm to 7pm and from 7.30pm. Saturday starts at 11am with the final at 8pm. The closing presentations are at 9pm on Sunday July 17th in the Auditorio.

Jazz Masterclasses The 3rd Jazz Festival takes place July 21st-25th, organised by the Italiana Jazz Band. Jazz seminars take place every day from 5pm8.30 pm, open to all young jazz musicians under the guidance of jazz teachers and performers. The professors and musicians intend to create the first Young Big Band Jazz group in Almería city. A jazz session and jam session take place on July 25th. Exhibitions Pere Bernadó has a painting exhibition until July 31st at the Mojácar Art Centre, at the ‘Fuente’ below the village. An exhibition of 41 black & white photographs from this photographer from Seville, entitled “Paisanos,” are on display until September 18th at the Centro Andaluz de la Fotografía, Almería City.
