February - St. Valentine’s Day

ebruary 2010 was very rainy, and in the two months from the middle of December to the middle of February, Almería province dealt with 370 litres of rain when the annual average was 138! So this year has been a bit more normal up to now. Easter is “late” this year, as late as it can be. We explain this on page 36 as it is quite interesting. Consequently, Águilas carnival does not start until March and official “Mardi Gras” day, or UK “Pancake Day “is March 9th. Aguilas Carnival has the first major procession on Sunday March 6th, followed by the Monday and Tuesday Processions. Then they have a break from big processions to re-cover until Saturday March 12th, when Doñ Carnal is defeated and Doña Cuaresma rules again until next year, and fireworks light up the sky. There are many processions in Spain, including those at Lorca in Murcia but Aguilas Carnival has been declared as a ‘National Interest’ event. Some people book a hotel room and stay all week! Carnivals and Mardi Gras events are supposed to be over by Ash Wednesday, March 10th, but there is always a small overlap in Aguilas. In 2010, February 14th was the first big Aguilas procession, but of course St. Valentine’s Day as well. Spain has gradually embraced the idea of St. Valentine’s day, and your favourite Spanish restaurant may even have a special meal and roses for the ladies. This assumes of course they are open and not having a break until Easter! English restaurants follow suit. February 28th is an official holiday in Andalucía, the area in which we live, as it is “Día de Andalucía”. This records the day Andalucía was made an autonomous region, and followed by amending laws, having their own constitution, and introducing things such as free medicines for babies under the age of 1, unique in Spain. February 28th is a Monday, but banks and official buildings will be shut. Almería city has a few parades. Día de Andalucía is not of course celebrated in other parts of Spain but as it is a

Monday this year it means people in Andalucía can have a long weekend here or away. Huércal Overa has a special fiesta on February 8th, dating back to 1793. Tradition has it that the new church was finished, statues and pictures were being transported through the streets when it began to get dark. Bonfires and torches were lit to help finish the job. This night is now known as La Noche de las Lumbres (Night of the Bonfires) and now an all day celebration. Concerts or theatre now starting again, but it is traditional that between Mardi Gras and Easter Sunday (Lent), not too many exciting events take place, and at one time marriages in church were not possible either. February 20th sees special groups of musicians playing in various places throughout Almería city, and they will mainly have come from the City of Almería Orchestra and the Young Orchestra of Andalucía. They are complaining bitterly that this year Michael Thomas the musical director, conductor and driving force behind these orchestras has not had his contract renewed. Michael, a famous musician in his own right, has directed these orchestras and youth groups since 2003, is married to a Spanish lady from Almería and has a daughter born here. Cut-backs in funding are said to be the main reason.

Compensation Claim The Moroccan known as El Karrat was imprisoned in 2001 for 13 years after a woman claimed that she had been forced to perform an oral sex act by him. He always claimed he was innocent. It transpired that the accusation was a result of another man persuading the woman to wrongly claim sexual assault. Through extensive work by the lawyer of El Karrat, this man subsequently admitted what he had done, and then the woman changed her testimony as well, and stated she did not even know him. They were both sent to prison. Meanwhile legal proceedings were started to free El Karrat which succeeded in 2009 when El Karrat was aged 44. The lawyers are now asking for compensation of 10 million euros for the 8 years he spent in prison, and damages for the psychological distress he suffered.

Internet Contact A study concerning the computer habits of young persons has revealed some disturbing facts. Over 50% of the boys and girls who provided information had put their telephone number, or address, or personal photos on the Internet. Boys had regularly viewed either web pages showing violence or pornography, whilst girls were less likely to do this. Most children were aware of the dangers of the Internet and some considered

Film Museum Now Open

La Casa del Cine

After years of discussion and a visit from Cynthia Lennon, the house known as “Romero Balmas” has now opened after major restoration to turn it into a museum. Apart from other famous films and film stars who came to Almería, the house commemorates in particular the time John Lennon spent in Almería. The song “Strawberry Fields Forever” was composed in this house. It is hoped that the museum will become a major tourist attraction in Almería. It is hoped by Lennon and Beatles fans that Almería can be twinned with Liverpool and New York in 2016. The Museum “Casa del Cine” is at No 2, Camino Romero, Almería City.

Adoption Changes Crime Statistics Almería has been distinguished in recent years for the success in stopping the entry of illegal immigrants, particularly by sea, and the breaking up of organized crime. During 2010, specialist police units have dismantled more than a dozen groups of criminals dedicated to the arrangements for illegal immigrants to set off by sea for Spain, and often Almería in particular. They have also achieved success in their campaign against women being forced into prostitution. 21 persons were arrested in one operation where raids were carried out on 14 properties connected to forced prostitution. The National Police in charge of exit and entrance at Almería port processed 180,000 vehicles and over 1 million passengers. This resulted in the refusal of entry to more then 100 people and the arrest of a further 200 people who were wanted for crimes both in Spain and other countries. 430 people were deported to their country of origin, including 168 people who were found guilty of crimes that would have resulted in prison sentences of less than 6 months. This group, with their own consent and that of the courts, agreed to be deported instead of going to prison. They also were refused entry back into Spain for a period of 10 years.

The Junta de Andaucía, the governing body that controls Andalucía including Almería province, have announced changes to their adoption regulations. At present, persons who wish to adopt children in Andalucia have been restricted to children with special needs, such as children with brothers or sisters, children under 7, or suffering from some challenge physically. Now, the Junta has announced that adoption can be considered for any children within their care. This is intended to give an impetus to those persons who wish to adopt a child from within Andalucía, and cut the cost of flights that have to be made by people trying to adopt, Russian, Chinese, Ukranian or other nationalities. The Department for Minors of the Junta de Andalucía offer free meetings for would be adoptive persons. In 2010 there were only 41 requests for adoption of children under the care of the Junta and it is now considered that this will change.

Food For The Needy The Roquetas Food Bank Centre has dispensed food to those in need for several years. During December 2010 they gave out 50,000 kilos of food, and the persons attending the centre rose from 16,000 in 2009 to 40,000 in 2010. Altogether 1.5 million kilos of food were given out in 2010. The Food Bank has 80 members, individuals or companies that regularly donate money that amounts to 600 euros per month. Weather Records

Where They Went Tourists visiting Almería city opted mostly to go and see the castle, a very visible landmark. The Archaeological Museum attracted 47,000 visitors and the Los Millares copper age site near Santa Fe de Mondújar saw 12,000 people; probably more if you did not have to book. The “Puerta de Almería” archaeological site in Nicolás Salmerón park has restricted access at present owing to work being undertaken, but 3,500 people in booked parties saw what they could. The new film museum is now open and expected to draw many visitors.

2010 has gone into the record books on several counts as a result of the weather. Rainfall is measured at Almería airport where there is a meteorological station. February and March were record months for rain with 18 days of rain in February and 12 in March. 2010 was amongst the 6 years with the most rain, 360 litres/m2, and from December 2009 to December 2010 there were 500 litres/m2, only surpassed by 1988/9 when 551 litres/m2 were measured. January 10th was the coldest day for 25 years with a recorded temperature of 2.9 degrees. As regards heat, July 8th was very hot, with a minimum of 24.5 degrees and a maximum of 40.3 degrees. This was only the 4th time a temperature of over 40 degrees had been recorded. (The record temperature was 41.2 degrees in July 1981). December 8th has gone into the record book as the temperature rose to 27.7 degrees, the highest ever measured in December in Almería, and certainly the hottest for 43 years when the weather station became operative. By December 17th the temperature had sunk to 3.5 degrees minimum, the lowest for the last 30 years. On January 8th, just gone 8pm, a record wind velocity of 104 km/hr was registered. Pigeon Culling Almería city employs a company from Puerto Lumbreras, ‘Águilas del Sol’ to capture pigeons that are damaging buildings through the acid from their droppings. This culling is also considered necessary to keep the pigeon population within a determined number thought to be sensible. Last year this company captured over 8,000 pigeons by various methods after a study of the places where they most congregated. The culling is complicated in that pigeons are regarded with affection in various parts of the city and on occasion the cages used to capture them have been found open! Unfortunately the pigeons are not released elsewhere after capture, but 20 to 30 a month are sent to Almería airport as food for the hawks that keep birds away from the runways.

Katerina Malai is from Rumania and was working in Almería over the Christmas period at the Circus Royal where she supervises the tigers. Her husband is from Bulgaria. Katerina gave birth to Claudio Malai at 2.53am at Torrecardenas hospital and was the first baby born in Almería city. The first baby born at Huércal-Overa in the New Year is called Rosana and she was born at 7.50am. Her mother, Mari Patrocinio, gave birth to the child following test tube fertilization as her partner is Isabel Rodríguez. The two women already have a brother for Rosana, aged two and a half called Miguel, who was conceived by the same method. It has been suggested that birth entries in registers be altered to show Parent 1 and Parent 2, to allow for the registration of babies with same sex partners.

Purchena Nursery Work is underway to improve the nursery at Purchena. When the work is finished there will be another classroom, a reception area, a larger storeroom and improved toilet facilities. The Junta de Andalucía has given a grant of 80,000 euros for the work.

Carboneras and Bédar Museums Carboneras has been awarded an EU grant of 74,000 euros towards the cost of creating a museum and information centre to explain the workings and importance of windmills and the crops brought for milling. The total cost is estimated at 100,000 euros and will be alongside the existing windmill known as ‘Cabecico del Aire’. In Bedar, another 75% grant has been given to create an information centre dealing with mining in the area and water works. The centre will be in Serena in the disused school and connected buildings. Information will be provided on walking and cycle routes in the area. The cost of this project is 60,000 euros, of which 45,000 comes from EU agriculture funds and the Junta de Andalucía.

The Death of Enrique Morente

The Flamenco world was shocked to hear that Enrique Morente had died, aged 67, just before Christmas. He was a leading flamenco performer from Granada and last performed in Almería during the summer fair and concert event. He was loved for his performances and envied for his grasp of traditional flamenco, but at the same time he exasperated others when he embraced the new modern flamenco “fusion”. He was a firm friend of Leonard Cohen as they were both very influenced by the work of the poet Lorca, and he recorded an album in Cohen’s honour with the Spanish band ‘Lagartija Nick’, far removed from his normal style. Garrucha Beginnings On January 1st, 1861, Garrucha became a municipality in its own right, having split from Vera.This January was the 150th anniversary. The legal agreement for Garrucha to be independent was signed by Queen Isabel ll in 1958, but Vera held off signing their part of the agreement until 1861. Garrucha wanted independence for primarily commercial reasons resulting from the mineral, maritime and fish trading.

Albox Industrial Estate

The mayor of Albox, José García, has travelled to Madrid to discuss the proposed modernization of the industrial estate at Terdiguera. The mayor and other council members hope that the Director General of Industry in Madrid will include Albox in a scheme of modernization of unsuitable industrial sites. The plan to modernize the Albox industrial estate has a price tag of around 2 million euros. Palomares and Wikileaks The plutonium contamination at Palomares is in the headlines at present due to a “Wikileaks” revelation, published in ‘El Pais’, one of the Spanish daily newspapers. These revelations concern a discussion between Miguel Angel Moratinos, Spanish Minister of the exterior, and Hilary Clinton, Secretary of State in the US in 2009. The conversation debated how much Spanish pressure would be put on the US once the report was published that revealed that there was still half a kilo of plutonium that had contaminated 50,000 cubic metres of soil. There is general agreement that this area of 40 hectares that is contaminated should be removed. The likely cost is estimated as 31 million euros. At present the US is not too keen to foot the bill, and take all the earth away, as has been done before; as Spain has nowhere to store the contaminated soil. The contamination resulted from the accidental dropping of four armed US nuclear bombs following an aircraft collision over Palomares in 1966. Plutonium was released from two

Planning Changes The Junta de Andalucía, governing body for Almería, has published new regulations regarding major projects. The new regulations are an attempt to tidy up existing legislation under one new heading. It is also intended that the new regulations speed up the process of application and approvals.

New Coastguard Boat ‘Salvamento Maritimo’ have taken delivery of a new multi-functional vessel, the “Sar Mastelero”. This boat replaces the “Remolcanosa V” that was involved in the Helimer 207 helicopter incident. The 40 metre vessel is equipped for towing another vessel weighing 60 tons, aiding vessels in distress, being equipped with firefighting equipment and also to help with rescuing illegal boat immigrants. There are 3 identical vessels that have cost 38 million euros.

Focus on Local News continued ETA Proposal The Spanish terrorist organization ETA (similar to the IRA in Ireland), amplified their “peace” suggestion from last September with a new statement. This was rejected by all political parties as not amounting to enough of a surrender. ETA has seen large numbers of their groups arrested in the last couple of years, and major caches of bomb material and computers have been seized. 24 hours after ETA’s announcement the Spanish Rapid Action Group of The Guardia Civil carried out a joint operation with the French police. In France Iraitz Geselaga Fernández was arrested, who is thought to be the mastermind behind coding and encryption of communiqués, and contact with lawyers who were used by the group. In Spain the police arrested Itxaso Urtiaga Valderrama, his girlfriend, who is believed to be involved in the same work, and travelled to Venezuela in 2008 with Iraitz, to visit ETA members there.

Wind Farms

The EU pushed for alternative energy sources in the 1990s and Germany and Spain are leaders in the production of electricity by wind farms. Apart from Cádiz, Almería is the province that supplies the most electricity this way in Andalucía with 17 windfarms. The major windfarms at Serón, Tíjola and Las Tres Villas, all supply in excess of 50 Megawatts. 1 Megawatt is the equivalent of having an appliance such as an electric fire on a 1 kilowatt setting for 1,000 hours of uninterrupted use. The EU aim is that by 2010, each member state will have 20% of their electricity supply provided by renewable energy. Albacete province manages to supply nearly 2,000 Megawatts which is close to 10% of the Spanish windfarm total. Focus on Local News continued Death of Eddie Fowlie On Saturday, January 22nd, Eddie Fowlie died in Carboneras aged 89. This was done and the film was partly shot there in 1962 starring Peter O’Toole. Eddie’s autobiography is called, “David Lean’s Dedicated Maniac. Memoirs of a Film Specialist”. Eddie built a hotel in Carboneras called “El Dorado” that is full of mementos from films. David Lean was going to make another film, “Nostromo” in Carboneras area in the late 80s, but died before this was done. The End of the World On Saturday, January 15th, several thousand ‘Telefonica’ customers lost either their Internet access; landline, or both. This was owing to a fire that destroyed vital equipment in the main exchange in Almería. Technical staff were called in from Granada, Seville and Madrid to help transfer lines. The three storey building had different problems on each of the floors. On Sunday night, ‘Telefonica’ sent a special team to the football ground where Almería City were to play Real Madrid. This was to ensure that all the press were able to sent off their reports or TV images during the game. Carboneras Port When the expansion work is finished at the port in April, it will become the largest port in Spain as regards gravel. It is anticipated that it will have a capacity for 6 million tons a year. The cost is calculated as 25 million euros, financed by the Transport and Ports Ministries, and the annual total amount of goods moved is estimated to involve between 70-80 million euros. The port will be capable of handling vessels up to 100,000 tonnes, compared to the former limit of less than 8,000 tonnes. It is also intended that marble and vegetable products will form part of the items handled. The new work will mean that the gravel trade, at present done from Almería port will move to Carboneras, allowing for the expansion of containerized goods from Almería port Cable Inglés Work The elevated railway at Almeria port known as the ‘Cable Inglés’ is seeing the first phase of restoration started. A likeable relationship comedy-drama, enlivened by terrific performances from Jason Bateman, Jeff Goldblum and young Thomas Robinson, though the script struggles to get past its unforgivable central premise and bungles its emotional climax as a result. What's it all about? The Switch stars Jason Bateman as Wally, whose best friend Kassie (Jennifer Aniston) announces that she's decided to have a baby via an attractive sperm donor (Patrick Wilson as Roland). Wally feels put out that Kassie doesn't ask him, not least because he's always had a crush on her, but things go horribly wrong when he accidentally destroys Roland's sperm sample and drunkenly substitutes his own. Kassie then conveniently relocates to another city, only to reappear seven years later with a young boy (Thomas Robinson as Sebastian). Realising (seven years too late) what must have happened, Wally has to decide whether to finally come clean to Kassie, but things are further complicated when she starts dating newly-single Roland, who she still thinks is Sebastian's father. The Good Jason Bateman has an extremely likeable screen persona, which is just as well, since the central act is so unforgiveable that it almost capsizes the film. What saves it is the touching relationship between Bateman and young Thomas Robinson â€“ indeed, it's their relationship that forms the emotional heart of the film, despite the marketing trying to convince you that this is the latest Jennifer Aniston non-com. The Bad The film's biggest problem is that it can't quite get over its own plot hurdle, instead resorting to cop-outs such as Wally's convenient seven year memory loss or a forced emotional finale that feels like it was tacked on. Worth seeing? The superb performances ultimately compensate for the occasional narrative mis-step and the emotionally unconvincing finale. Worth seeing, surprisingly. So Now You Know... The Longest Lift Fall Betty Lou Oliver was a lift operator on the 80th floor of the Empire State Building in New York. Everbody knew that the film scenes of a lift plunging to the bottom of a shaft were not possible because of brakes and safety cables. In 1945, a B-25 bomber flew into the building and Betty Lou, badly burned, was put into another lift to be taken to the ground floor for specialist medical attention. The aircraft had damaged its cables and she plunged down. Fortunately some brake action, air pushing down underneath, and some coiled cables below, broke her fall. Betty survived and holds the record for a 300m lift fall. Smelling Whilst Asleep We don’t mean you didn’t wash before you came to bed, we mean that only a small percentage of the population can smell odours whilst in deep sleep. Hearing things is fairly usual; traffic, a radio, the dog moving, and more usefully, an alarm. Smelling things is very rare. Polar Bears Polar bears have a thick white fur that apart from being the right colour to merge in against the snow, helps keep the polar bear warm. In reality, their fur is a dense collection of almost transparent strands, so at sunset and sunrise the colour of their fur can be a yellow-orange shade. Providing the fur is clean it reflects light shining off the white snow, until the end of the season, mid summer, when it is about to moult. At this time it can become a very “grey” shade of white. The hairs of a polar bear are hollow and in 2004, two polar bears at Singapore Zoo turned green from algae in their pool that filled their hollow hairs. Delia’s Cake Delia Smith is a famous TV chef who has also sold more cookery books than anyone else. In 1969 she started writing for the ‘Daily Mirror’ and also worked from home. One Month On

any people in Spain were still astounded on Sunday, January 2nd, when they found that the new ant-smoking laws had actually come into place, and it applied to their favourite bar and restaurant too!

The typical profile of persons trying to give up is that there are more women than men and the average age of the women is 42 and they smoke 23 Luckily, the weather meant that people who chose cigarettes a day. to go outside their normal bar for a cigarette weren’t, in general, frozen stiff. Gradually some problems emerged where bar owners complained that at certain times there were more people outside their bar than inside. Regulations about drinking in the street mean that you can’t take your drink with you, and bar owners were complaining that clients were leaving bags and coats inside the bar whilst they were outside! Disco and late music bars found they had to distinguish between those coming back in after a smoke, and those queuing to get inside to start with! Suddenly, unenclosed terraces with a roof and possibly an outside gas heater were the rage, and in certain parts of Spain the supply of these heaters ran out. Town halls were inundated with requests for covered terraces or awnings, or whatever the regulations allowed! Almería city had 138 applications within a few days. The amended smoking /tobacco laws were passed only a couple of days before Christmas with only Santa Justa station at Seville minor amendments. Attempts to introduce compensation for the 1% of bar and restaurant owners who had paid to have a closed-off smoking area following the 2006 regulations failed, smoking was banned within the grounds of hospitals as well as inside, and tobacco vending machines were allowed to be installed in petrol stations. Hotels must keep 30% of their rooms as rooms where you can smoke, but somehow separate them from the other 70%, and once chosen they can’t choose a different 30%!

Health officials are trying to decide whether they should offer some financial help to people who want to stop smoking, such as paying for antismoking treatment. This is going to be very difficult to do, apart from finding the money! Individual autonomous regions such as Andalucía can decide for themselves if they wish to do this. The Tobacco Laboratory of the Junta de Andalucía Health Authority is investigating the contents and effects of the electronic cigarettes, to see if they are harmful to health and if the advertising is fraudulent! Rechargeable electronic cigarettes cost from 60 to 100 euros, give the smoker a nicotine input and produce smoke that has been christened “steam”, free of contaminants.

More Questions than Answers

n January 21st last year, a search and rescue helicopter from the Spanish coastguard service “Salvamento Maritimo” crashed into the sea five miles from Almería airport. An interim report by the Spanish Air Accident Authority (CIAIAC) has just been published. The cause of the crash has been put down to one of the bleakest causes of aircraft accidents, “controlled flight into terrain or sea”. The crew of the helicopter, for reasons totally inexplicable at present, flew their helicopter into the sea, whilst apparently in full control of a fully functioning aircraft and seemingly totally unaware of any impending disaster.

The helicopter designated as “Helimer 207” had taken off from Almería airport at 6.10pm for a routine training exercise liaising with a sea vessel from Salvamento Maritimo, the Salvamar Denébola. It had a crew of four consisting of pilot and copilot, a rescue swimmer and a winchman. Three of the crew were Spanish and the co-pilot was from New Zealand, so known by his crew as “El Kiwi”! The exercise was completed successfully and at 8.14pm the helicopter pilot officially acknowledged the end of the exercise with the swimmer back on board. The pilot then requested landing permission from Almería airport. The airport controller asked if they wanted to refuel after they landed and this was discussed. Unfortunately, part of this conversation was leaked to the press, who then published that the helicopter had run out of fuel (!), resulting in furious denials from the coastguards.

Further investigation is promised, including investigation into aircrew training, the ergonomics of the cockpit, and anything else that can help. At present it has been suggested that “Spacial disorientation” could be a contributing factor. This has been responsible for other air accidents over the sea, when, (for example) the pilot becomes disorientated in daylight, between the sea, horizon and the sky. This accident took place however after darkness had fallen.

Two minutes after asking for landing permission, the helicopter was approaching Almería airport when the automatic warning signals of both lights on the cockpit display and an audible instruction “landing gear, landing gear!” were activated, as the helicopter was only 150 feet above the sea. From the black box recorded conversation, neither the pilot nor co-pilot seemed concerned about this, and the co-pilot was in normal conversation regarding re-fuelling with air traffic control at 8.16pm when the helicopter flew into the sea. The helicopter was a type AW 139 manufactured in Italy by AgustaWestland, and had only been in service since June 2009. It had been flown for 348 hours. The helicopter belonged to “Inaer”, a multinational company that purchase aircraft and supply them on government contracts. “Inaer OffShore”, employed the crew and were responsible

The only thing you can be sure of, is that the Easter bunnies have worked this out too, and know when to deliver the eggs.

There is another Equinox in September, called the Autumn Equinox, for the same reason, but the Easter dates are influenced by the March one. A man took his wife deer hunting for the first time. After he explained the basics to his wife, he told her the most important piece of information: Whenever you shoot something, make sure to claim it right away or the first person who gets to your kill can claim it as their own, so be quick if we want to have deer meat in the refrigerator! Computer Nerds Did you hear about the woman who was married to a succession of three Microsoft employees and still died a virgin? Out of Hours A veterinarian surgeon had had a hell of a day, but when he got home from tending to all the sick animals his wife was waiting with a long cool drink and a romantic candle-lit dinner, after which they had a few more drinks and went happily to bed. At about 2:00 in the morning, the phone rang. "Is this the vet?" asked an elderly lady's voice. "Yes, it is", replied the vet, "Is this an emergency?" Role Reversal A journalist had done a story on gender roles in Kuwait several years before the Gulf War and she noted then that women customarily walked about 10 feet behind their husbands. She returned to Kuwait recently and observed that the men now walked several yards behind their wives. She approached one of the women for an explanation. "This is marvellous," said the journalist. "What enabled women here to achieve this reversal of roles?" To which the Kuwaiti woman replied: "Land mines." Golf Clubs There was a businesswoman who just made a million dollars for an Arabian Oil Sheik. When she was leaving, the Oil Sheik offered her diamonds and rubies and a Silver-plated Rolls Royce, but she declined. The Sheik insisted she accepted something so she said that she had just started to play golf and maybe some golf clubs would be nice. A few weeks later she received a telegram from the sheik. "So far I have bought you 3 golf clubs. I hope you aren't disappointed that only 2 of them have swimming pools."

The only cow in a small town in Poland stopped giving milk. The people did some research and found that they could buy a cow from Moscow for 2000 rubles, or one from Minsk for 1000 rubles. Being frugal, they bought the cow from Minsk. The cow was wonderful. It produced lots of milk all the time, and the people were amazed and very happy. They decided to acquire a bull to mate with the cow and produce more cows like it. Then they would never have to worry about the milk supply again. They bought the bull and put it in the pasture with their beloved cow. However, whenever the bull came close to the cow, the cow would move away. No matter what approach the bull tried, the cow would move away from the bull and he could not succeed in his quest. The people were very upset and decided to ask the rabbi, who was very wise, what to do. They told the rabbi what was happening; "Whenever the bull approaches our cow, she moves away. If he approached from the back , she moves forward. When he approaches her from the front, she backs off. An approach from the side and she just walks away to the other side." The rabbi thought about this for a minute and asked, "Did you buy this cow from Minsk?" The people were dumbfounded. They had never mentioned where they had got the cow. "You are truly wise rabbi. How did you know we got the cow from Minsk?" The rabbi answered sadly, "My wife is from Minsk."
