I

n not many weeks it will be 2014, but where did 2013 go! It does look as if there will be a gradual improvement in the economy in general next year. Individuals and businesses will be waiting with bated breath. Any mortgage holder who has their interest rates re-calculated this December will pay a reduced amount next year, thanks to a further drop in the “Euribor” rate that determines interest amounts. Other mortgage holders may have to wait longer, depending on when their review takes place.

you are religious, but otherwise just another holiday day. Some years, essential maintenance to electricity and water supplies is carried out on Christmas day, as it’s a convenient time to have breaks in the supplies for the Spanish! There will be many celebrations where the “El Gordo” lottery on December 22nd has proven lucky. We explain the significance of this and the January 6th lottery in an article.

A Three Kings procession

Tourist numbers for November are not yet fully calculated but it has certainly been another record month throughout Spain, along with tourists into Almería airport. The new airport taxes discount plan, for any airline or tour operator that opens up new routes to Spain in 2014-2015, is solely designed to attract an increase in numbers. Ryanair and other airlines will be carefully studying the amended rates, and Michael O’Leary is already talking about re-instating his Almería to Madrid flight, along with others. Estate agents have been experiencing a real boost in sales with almost all the purchasers being cash buyers. Figures in Almería province for the 3rd quarter of this year (July to September) show an increase of 18%, and this period in other years has often been quiet. In all of Spain, only Málaga and Santa Cruz in Tenerife have had better sales, and then only slightly. The figures here are nearly four times the average in the rest of Andalucía, and twelve times the national average! New property owners whether buying a main home or a holiday home will help boost the money spent in this region. The third quarter sales here amounted to just over 2,000 properties. For those readers not familiar with the Spanish Christmas traditions, Christmas Eve (“Noche Buena”) is more important than Christmas Day. The evening meal is a big family event, when people working or living away try to get back home. For this reason the vast majority of Spanish businesses, including restaurants, will be shut on the evening of Christmas Eve. Christmas day is a time for going to church if

New Year’s Eve (“Noche Vieja”) is celebrated as much in Spain as any other country, but with the traditional eating of twelve grapes on the strokes of midnight. The Plaza del Sol square in Madrid is packed in front of the clock that has become the reference point for Spain. January 5th, twelfth night – the night before the twelfth day, is the eve of “El Día de Los Reyes Magos” (Three Kings), the time when presents are exchanged. Children have written letters to their favourite king (as opposed to Santa) and eagerly await the result. School and nursery children receive presents from the Kings at a special event at their town halls. The processions with the three kings on January 5th and 6th take place in every town and city. Spanish television channels switch back and forth between the most lavish ones in the major cities. The typical greeting for Christmas and the New Year is “Felices Fiestas” and we wish this to all our readers and advertisers. (As in other years there will be no January issue of the ‘Focus’ magazine and we return as normal in February).

Focus on Local News Christmas & New Year Spending Every year the independent Federation of Users and Consumers carries out a major survey throughout Spain relating to anticipated spending over Christmas and the New Year by adults in work. As regards Almería, they estimate that every adult will spend an average of 410 euros for extra expenses in the festive season. This is 55 euros less than 2012 and a staggering 348 euros less then in 2008. The average throughout Spain as a whole is 455 euros, but along with Almería province, all of Andalucía thinks they will spend less. The division of the 410 euros is 130 euros for presents, and 160 euros for food eaten at home or elsewhere. Money spent on the two special lotteries is estimated to be 65 euros, way down from the 133 in 2008 (We feature these lotteries in an article). 60 euros is set aside for any leisure activity, as opposed to 209 euros in 2008. The advice from the Federation is to buy presents and toys that are really suitable for the recipient, and not just look good. They also recommend buying meat and fish well before the time they are needed and freezing them. This will avoid price rises nearer the time and spread the cost. The vast majority of people in the survey said they would only spend small amounts using a credit card this year. Almería Airport Hours The Ministry of Transport and ‘AENA’, the airports authority, have clarified the opening hours at Almería airport. The official hours are from 7am10.45pm. With prior approval, the night time hours can be extended to 11.15pm. This has to allow for sufficient time for a return flight to take off again. There was criticism in July when a flight from Madrid was diverted to Granada airport with an arrival time by coach of 2am in Almería. The authorities say that all airlines are aware of the opening hours and the flight in question only asked for a late arrival at 10.40pm whilst still in Madrid, too late to allow for the landing and departure procedures. The airport can be manned with an emergency crew at any time when it is

officially shut, for the arrival or departure of organ donations for hospitals.

Olive Oil From January 1st, a new EU directive comes into force regarding olive oil used in bars and restaurants. Olive oil given to customers has to show a label with the name of the company that has supplied it. The oil also has to be supplied in “one off” quantities such as a sachet, or in a bottle that cannot be refilled, with, for example, a spray top. This is aimed at ensuring that poor quality oil or a blend of various oils is no longer used, and also to improve hygiene. Olive oil producers see this as a good move. In Italy it has been claimed by Spanish olive oil exporters that the top quality oil they export there is often mixed with lower grade oil. The 1,200 bars and restaurants in Almería, along with the rest of Spain, have until February 28th to comply with these regulations. The Mojácar Post Office In reply to our “local news” item about the problems with the Mojácar “Apartado” post boxes, a reader, Mr. J.D.Grey, has contacted us. He knows for sure that various letters addressed to him in the correct manner have been returned to the sender. A letter sent back to the ‘HSBC’ bank resulted in them deciding that his “Apartado” address was “unsafe”. He points out that “a country is judged by its postal service”. If a house owner can properly identify his house or apartment street name and number and fit a post box (buzón), this will help, but in some cases (as with Mr. Grey) this is not possible. The “Apartado” address then needs to be changed to the street

Focus on Local News address. This is a practical solution, but by no is completely false and much more liable to have mechanical wear or faults. means exonerates the post office! Pedestrian Injuries and Deaths In the last three years up to this November, 18 pedestrians were killed and another 186 injured on roads in Almería province. 74 people were severely injured and 112 had other injuries. The figures were about the same on zebra crossings without pedestrian traffic lights as those with. More than 50% of accidents were in the mornings, and a large number of pedestrians involved were age 65 or more. This is believed to be due to poor eyesight or hearing, and more time needed to cross. Vehicle reaction time is also an important factor. The proposed reduction in speed in all towns from 50km/hr to 30km/hr is designed to reduce injury. Any person involved in an accident, including pedestrians, now have to provide a breath sample or drugs swab at the scene. A Really Dangerous Scam 24 people connected with the motor trade were arrested by a combined police force in Almería recently and 42 bank accounts were blocked. 27 searches were made of different premises and 252 vehicles inspected that were on sale. The persons involved were using sophisticated computer software to change the display of the mileage to a much reduced number of kilometres. Sale prices to the public were then much higher. The vehicles chosen were bought from “trade only” auctions, where ex-leasing vehicles were sold. As they were all about 3-4 years old, and had never needed an “ITV” (MOT) there was no official record of the distance travelled. In some cases police claim that mileage readings of 250,000 to 300,000 kms had been changed back to 80,000. Police trawled through the auction sales records of a total of 32,000 vehicles to find the ones that had been manipulated. So far, at least 210 vehicles that had been tampered with were sold-on in Almería province, but others were sold nationally or on the Internet. Apart from fraud, unsuspecting purchasers have bought vehicles where the mileage

El Ejido Storm Pictures from El Ejido taken on November 20th could have been confused with those from Pueblo Laguna and Puerto Rey in September 2012. After a day of very black skies, torrential rain and hailstones came down during the afternoon. In just less than an hour some 40 litres per square metre bucketed down. In imperial measurements this meant 16 inches of rainfall. The hailstones settled to a depth of 6 inches on roads and pavements in some cases. Apart from major damage to vehicles, homes and commercial premises, the hail storm decimated very large areas of under cover fruit and vegetable growing sites. An initial estimate of this damage amounted to 32 million euros. Connecting roads were washed away and there were large tailbacks on the A-7 motorway, and the Roquetas to El Ejido road had to be closed. When the full extent of the damage had been calculated, the El Ejido authorities and associations of growers asked the Junta de Andalucía for a declaration that this was a natural catastrophe needing major financial help. Mojácar Plans The majority ‘PP’ party council in Mojácar have put forward a new planning document known as ‘PGOU’ that defines how future expansion will take place in the next 20-30 years. Opposition councillors voted against this, asking for more

Focus on Local News time to study and debate the measures. Any new plan has been frozen for many years after the “Llano Central” plans for an enormous project between Garrucha and Los Gallardos were unveiled. It now seems accepted that this will never happen. One proposal is that the land from around the petrol station down to the beach would have amongst other development a bus station, medical centre, police station, recycling area, a home for elderly residents and a fairground. Opposition councillors consider that the terrain on this site is not suitable. A plan to join the Marina de la Torre development across to the Garrucha-Mojácar bypass with a new road has been put forward. A small marina is envisaged near the Hotel Indalo, and industrial units opposite the petrol station on the Garrucha-Los Gallardos bypass, in the area known as Las Alparatas. A parking area and possibly a hotel, would be sited where the Mojácar camping site is at present. This and other projects have the date of January 15th for any objections or counterproposals. Opposition councillors say that for such a major plan they need at least until the end of January to reply, taking into account the Christmas and New Year period as well. Cheaper Mortgage Payments The president of the Central European Bank surprised the financial markets by reducing the cost of borrowing money from 0.5% to 0.25% recently, a measure designed to help boost trade in the EU. As a result of this, the “Euribor” rate is expected to fall even further, which is good news for mortgage holders. This rate, that mostly determines mortgage interest amounts, has been less than 1% for some time, after peaking at more than 5% in 2008-2009. By the end of December it is expected that the percentage will have reduced from 0.5% to perhaps 0.3%. If it does fall to this level, a mortgage of 120,000 euros over 20 years would have the interest payments reduced by a total saving of 156 euros a year. For a mortgage of 150,000 euros the reduction would be 192 euros a year. Mortgage holder will have to wait until the time when interest rates are worked

out every year, but for many banks or lenders this is done in December so any reduction in payments will be applied at the start of 2014. The only disadvantage of the reduced Central Bank rate of interest is that deposit accounts at banks will have a reduced interest rate as well on some existing accounts or new ones opened. For mortgage holders it is definitely good news.

Fuit & Veg Prices Agricultural suppliers in Almería are continually complaining about the mark up in prices over what they sell their products for, and what the consumer pays. They have started a new campaign with the title “Large retail outlets defraud you and me”. The typical price of tomatoes and peppers on sale is 6 times the price the grower obtains, and in the case of oranges was recently 7 times greater. Prices for lettuces are often 5 times the money paid to the growers. The association complains that they are always being pressurized to reduce their prices but the sellers keep putting their price up. They consider that selling prices in supermarkets are fixed at a level that they think consumers will pay, not a price that gives a normal profit margin. They say that this particularly applies within Spain, where distribution costs are lower than in export markets. A complaint is being made to the Almería consumer body who they hope will add their voice to the latest complaints. On a similar vein, a group of people who produce ecologically fed lamb are to offer it for sale direct to the public via a website. In this case they say that the high quality of their

On November 19th the EU parliament approved a 40% grant towards the “Mediterranean Corridor” of rail links from France to Algeciras. This “Connect Europe” project has a total grant of 29 billion euros. The grants are awarded on a “payment by results” basis, with 2030 as the date when all the work has to be completed. Hot Water! The unilateral modified statutes from ‘Galasa S.A.’, the water supplier in this area, are provoking a fierce debate. ‘Galasa’ want to impose on all the municipalities that they purchase water solely from them, take over any existing water equipment, and charge the cost of the water at a price fixed by them only. Albox and Turre seem to be the municipalities most affected by these new rules. The mayor of Albox, Rogelio Mena, says that to change from the company they have a contract with at present would mean they would have to pay compensation. He says that ‘Galasa’ are “moving the goal posts in the middle of a game”. He also highly criticises another clause that states that if any municipality withdraws from ‘Galasa’ they have to pay them compensation based on the number of inhabitants. ‘Galasa’are currently “in the red” to the tune of 22 million euros. Albox council agreed at a special meeting to oppose any of the changes in the statutes. 1.3 Million Fraud The National Police in Almería recently smashed a social security scheme that had defrauded a total of 1.3 million euros. 25 phantom companies had been formed, with a large number of “ghost” workers registered with the social services as employees, who then became “unemployed” and claimed benefit. In some cases the documents

presented regarding the residents certificates were false as well. The fraud came to light when it was realized that all the dummy companies and ghost employees were being formed or administered by the same “gestor” (legal advisor), who provided false documentation using special Internet access for “gestors” in general.

Mobiles, Tablets and E-book Devices The American “FAA” aircraft regulatory body has told US carriers that in their opinion the use of electronic equipment by passengers is not dangerous once an aircraft is in normal flight. Mobile ’phones, CD or DVD players, tablets or book reader devices all emit radio waves. These have been proved to cause some problems and false readings in the cockpit that are potentially dangerous at take-off and landing. Once an airplane is above 3,000 ft, the problems virtually disappear in severity. They are advising airlines that they can decide for themselves, depending on aircraft type, what their policy is to be. Modern planes such as the ‘Airbus’ have systems that reduce the radio signals encountered, or aerials that are used to re-transmit mobile ‘phone frequencies. The “FAA” does not recommend the use of laptop computers on flights, solely because in turbulence or other “manoeuvres” their weight may cause personal injury to the user or other passengers! European airlines are expected to follow suit.

Focus on Local News continued “Sareb” Sales The “toxic” bank debts relating to properties where there was nil chance of any repayment were put into a central organization called “Sareb” (for short), after the Spanish banking system had to be overhauled last year. The object is to attract long term investors to buy whole chunks of the properties available. Up to the end of October they sold 4,500 properties out of a target of 7,500 for 2013. They hope to have sold 36,000 of these “bad debt” properties by 2016. As we stated last month, some 103 million euros is being set aside for the demolition of half built properties, or projects just started, where the cost of finishing the properties ready for sale is estimated at 133 million euros.

A sentence of more than 2 years means just that; in prison. As we reported last month, the then mayor of Cantoria, Pedro Lamas, was in court over the four “illegal” houses and a prison term of 3 years was requested by the prosecution service, so a real prison term. The judge handed down a 2 year suspended sentence, and a ban from holding a position as a councillor or similar position for 23 months. This was upheld on appeal so Pedro Llamas was forced to resign as a councillor, which he did. In the next court case pending, a prison term has again been requested. If a judge agrees with this, the new prison term is added to the suspended term and a real prison term should follow. The opposition councillors in Cantoria have made an official complaint (denuncia) to the Guardia Civil police regarding Pedro Llamas, and the court ban on holding any council position. They state that he is a still a regular visitor to the town hall and is involved in council affairs. If this is proved, another prosecution for “contempt of court” could result.

Smoking Fight Health professionals are bitterly opposed to the proposed change in the anti-smoking laws that are being put forward in Madrid relating to the ‘Eurovegas’ casino project. Sheldon Adelson, the US magnate behind the project, has virtually made the right to smoke in the casinos part of the contract “if” he comes to Madrid. The Association of Medical Professionals is convinced that the non-smoking laws at present are stopping deaths, heart attacks, lung cancer and hospitalization. They are totally against “money” affecting health. It is highly likely that if customers of the casinos are allowed to smoke, changes in the ant-smoking laws throughout Spain would have to be modified. The pressure from hotels or restaurants, that a few years ago built expensive smoking areas, ‘Primark’ Store Open would be impossible to ignore. Focus on Local News continued Car Accidents An association that studies the relationship between work and road safety has published their results for 2012. They claim that there were 949 persons who lost work days as a result of traffic accidents in Almería province. They calculate the cost in lost production to be an average of 2,500 euros for each person. They also state that the average time off work is 33 days. The peak accident time for 73% of workers is not surprisingly from 8am-10am & 6pm-8pm. Of all the accidents registered as being work related more than 50% were road accidents. They ask employers and the self employed to try and re-organize their work periods to avoid peak times of traffic flow. Disguised Trade Sales The Spanish traffic authority linked to the Guardia Civil police force want new legislation to be put into place regarding vehicles with “For sale” signs in streets, public land, markets, or places such as hospital or supermarket car parks. They are trying to stop motor traders from presenting themselves as private sellers. Doing this means that purchasers do not get the 2 years written guarantee from trade sellers, or the 12 month reduced guarantee if both parties agree. They have asked councils to pass local legislation to prohibit all types of sales in such areas, but many councils have not complied. Mojácar council prohibited this some years ago, faced with a large number of vehicles with “Se vende” or “For sale” signs on the beach areas. Help With Water & Electricity Costs The Junta de Andalucía is planning to introduce a payment system for families who are considered to be below the breadline and in many cases without work. This is thought to currently apply to 1,700 families in Almería province. They plan to subsidise these families with a total cost of 3,000 litres of water per month and 1,400 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, from the 2,519 kilowatts they consider are used by such an average family. In the first quarter of 2013, 1,708 families applied for benefit based on their low

income. Existing benefits pay about 400 euros per month for a single person rising to 645 euros for a family of 6 or more members, for an initial period of 6 months. 78% of these claimants are Spanish and the remainder non-Spanish. Families who qualify for such help have to have been in such a situation for a minimum of 12 months, and all persons have to be registered on the “padrón” (the list of residents in every municipality). Central government has immediately criticised this plan as “unworkable” and say that for the suppliers of water and electricity it would involve very complicated accounting. Such lack of support between the Junta and Central government is because they are of opposing political parties!

A 2014 Michelín Star There are now two restaurants in Almería province that hold 1 Michelin star for their cuisine. The “La Costa” restaurant run by chef José Alvarez in El Ejido has had their star confirmed and Alejandro Sánchez from the “Alejandro” restaurant in Roquetas has regained his star after obtaining it previously then losing it. There are eight establishments in Spain with the 3 star award, but Madrid only has one, as a result of these latest awards. Disaster Help The Mental Health Department in Huércal-Overa experienced an increase in persons asking for advice or medication after the 2012 September flood disaster. The protocol following a large catastrophe of this nature has been the subject

Focus on Local News continued of a conference between the mental health professional, hospitals, doctors, fire service chiefs, Local and Guardia police, and local mayors. The aim of this conference was to see if the coordination of all the agencies involved could be improved to offer the best assistance in a similar event, not just locally. There was a great deal of anxiety recently amongst residents and businesses when a smaller flood occurred in Pueblo Laguna and Puerto Rey. The conference looked at the ability of all the agencies to give accurate information quickly, in person and through the media and social networking sites. Old Cars The Almería traffic department is sending out letters to all owners of vehicles that are over 10 years old. If you receive such a letter, this is first of all aimed at checking that their records are up to date. They think this comes to 262,000 vehicles, some 54% of all the ones in their data base. Their message from the traffic police department (DGT) records is that on ordinary roads the risk of injury and death from accidents is twice as likely with older vehicles than with modern ones. 20% of all registered vehicles are over 15 years old. The plan “PIVE” with discounts when a car is over 10 years old, or 7 in the case of a van, with the consequent scrapping of these vehicles is designed to reduce the number of older vehicles on the roads. The discount plans have now been renewed 3 times, and the motor manufacturers and retailers hope they will be renewed again in early 2014, when the available money is expected to run out again. “ITV” & Radar The Spanish Traffic Authorities are concerned about the number of vehicles that have no current “ITV” (MOT)” test certificate. In some cases this is blamed on the economic crisis, but the fine for not having passed the tests is 200 euros. Their main concern is that potentially dangerous faults may be present without drivers being aware of them. In early December they will feed all the

registration numbers of cars that pass fixed speed radar points into the general register of vehicles that holds “ITV” data. This will flag any vehicle that is not shown as having a current test certificate. There are 11 fixed radar devices throughout Almería province. The radar devices that register the most speeding offences and fines are the ones on the A-7 motorway level with El Ejido and on the A-334 between Purchena and Macael where the speed limit is 60km/hr. Between January and the end of September, the A-334 radar point recorded 5,666 speeding vehicles! The most speeding offences take place between 8am-4pm and mostly exceed the limits by 20km/hr.

The “Monday” Fuel Effect The authorities who are responsible for a fair pricing system are convinced the large petroleum companies are operating a “cartel” and fixing prices. They have been looking at fuel prices for some time. EU surveys of fuel prices in member states for petrol and diesel are noted every Monday. It has been plain for a long time that fuel prices at the pumps are being reduced on Mondays accordingly and increased over the rest of the week. At weekends, or particularly at holiday times, prices often go up further. The Ministry of Industry has therefore taken an average of the prices during the previous week to send to Brussels. There are several investigations underway regarding fuel prices. The claim is that prices from the supplier and at the pumps are more than a fair profit margin. The Spanish Association of Fuel Retailers continually denies this.

Focus on Local News continued El Ejido Paellas The present town council in El Ejido are trying to pay off all the bills owing but are handicapped by the major political scandal that was uncovered in 2008. An enormous amount of money was siphoned off and 20 people were arrested. The present council have taken advantage of a cheap government loan scheme available for every town hall to pay off their outstanding supplier bills. Two of the bills settled relate to two paellas. One cost 1,000 euros and the other 3,400. These bills are not part of the fraud! They relate to two enormous paellas cooked there in 2009. The big one was to feed 1,700 people. Paellas like these are cooked by specialists, in this case a non-profit association that puts all the money they are paid towards the fiestas in Paterno where they come from. The El Ejido Councillor for Finance, José Francisco Rivera, remarked that debts like these from the previous council were totally unacceptable and the bills had been presented various times before without being paid. 1,800 Million Euros On November 12th, the EU promised 6,000 million euros to be used to combat unemployment in young persons under the age of 25. The 1,800 million available to Spain is for 2014-2015. The idea is that social security payments by employers would be drastically reduced if work contracts were signed. The aim is that young persons that are unemployed obtain work, or access to a training course within 4 months. Spain and Greece have the worst unemployment figures for young persons at 57% each. Not Almería But….. Following an official complaint by the UK, ten members of the European Commission visited Spain and Gibraltar to see for themselves the exact function of the border dispute and claims. The have now ruled that Spain is within its rights to operate such controls going into Gibraltar and coming back, but suggested that more use should

be made of the available space on the Spanish side of the border. This would cut down the queues and bottlenecks. They also suggested that the Gibraltar authorities should make safeguards and regulations to stop the “contraband” of the importing into Spain of large numbers of cigarettes (in particular). They also asked for constructive talks between both parties to take place. Spain is of course pleased with this decision, but the Gibraltar authorities stated that this merely “reinforced the abuses” made by Spain for the last 6 months.

Zurgena Court Cases Cándido Trabalón, ex mayor of Zurgena but still a councillor, is awaiting an appeal against a sentence of 21 months in prison and a 9 year ban on holding public office for planning irregularities. At the end of November, another court case started, following the investigation named “Operación Costurero” in 2008. This relates to the building of 14 houses at ‘Los Llanos de Peral’ on land not zoned for building and other projects. 6 other councillors who approved the development are also in court, along with the municipal architect and building and promoter companies involved, along with their overall technical architect. Another prison term and a further ban on holding office is requested for Cándido Trabalón and prison terms that total 180 years for all of the accused.

So Now You Know... “Twas the Night Before Christmas” Clement Clarke Moore was a 19th century author and classics professor who wrote the poem for his family to celebrate Christmas in 1922, allegedly drawing inspiration for Santa from a pudgy Dutch driver who took his family on a sleigh ride. But Moore never intended for it to be made public, so it almost just stayed in his drawer. A close friend of Moore sent the poem to the ‘Sentinel’ newspaper where it was published anonymously. The writer felt the poem was not his best work and after it was published and became a huge hit, he denied writing it for nearly 15 years. It was eventually included in an anthology of Moore's work thanks to the insistence of his children. Department Store Santas The first department store in the US to feature a visit from Santa was the J. W. Parkinson’s store in Philadelphia in 1841. Astonishingly, no other US department stores copied this event until 1890 when a store in Boston repeated it. Before long, lines of children formed at stores across America to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him their wish list. The “department store” Santa has been immortalized in films such as “Miracle on 34th Street” and “Christmas Story”. Each year there are approximately 20,000 “Rent-a-Santas” across the United States, many trained by specialist agencies on how to keep a jolly attitude, and accept money from parents while the children are not looking! Rudolph “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” was created as a 1939 promotion for the New York ‘Montgomery Ward’ store, and was a character in a book given to children visiting Santa. The advertising material was written by Robert L. May. It became a huge success but the store owned the copyright. Robert May later faced bankruptcy paying medical bills for his very ill wife, and eventually the store gave the “Rudolph” rights back after a lot of pleas. “Rudolph” became an even bigger success when May set the story to music along with his brother-in-law Johnny Marks. The famous version recorded by Gene Autry became one of the best-selling Christmas songs ever, selling 2 million copies.

Poinsettias The poinsettia plant was originally native to Mexico and cultivated by the Aztecs. For the Aztecs, the plant’s brilliant colour symbolized purity. They used the leaves to make dye and the sap to reduce fever. They called the plant “Cuetlaxochitl”. Joel Roberts Poinsett was the first Ambassador from the USA to Mexico in 1825. Whilst visiting the Taco area in 1828, he became very interested in the plant and sent some back to South Carolina. They became known as “Poinsettia” as a result in the mid 1830s. Mexican legend says that God turned some weeds into poinsettias as a gift for a poor girl at Christmas who had nothing to give to baby Jesus. “NORAD Tracks Santa” The ‘NORAD’ US & Canada Northern Command Centre is a top secret base designed to provide highly accurate instant airspace data. Every December 24th, volunteers “share” the data they collect about one specific object. According to the NORAD web site, they use radar, satellites, Santa cams and fighter jets to track Santa. Back in 1955, the “Sears” stores printed a phone number so children could tell Santa what they wanted. The misprinted phone number sent children to the “hotline” for Colonel Harry Shoup, NORAD Director of Operations. Instead of blocking the number, he kindly ordered his staff to give children “Santa flight co-ordinates”, now an iPhone app. Home Alone As with many other Christmas movies, “Home Alone” slipped in a reference to another Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life”, when the rest of the family are seen watching TV in their French hotel. Macaulay Culkin still has evidence of being Kevin McAllister. In the scene where Harry bites Kevin’s finger, Joe Pesci bit harder than he'd intended and left Macaulay with a scar. Daniel Stern wasn’t crazy about having to film a scene with a tarantula on his face, but agreed to it on the condition that they do just one take. The project is providing a refreshing example that things can be done differently. It reminds us that there are other ways to think about our lifestyle choices, our communities and our future, right on our doorstep.

A typical day at Sunseed involves an early wake up call for breakfast. Then you are welcome to join one

of the departments in their daily tasks. It can be anything from harvesting or planting in the organic gardens, conserving the immediate landscape or doing plant research. Making bread, preserves, or natural cosmetics aids sustainable living. There is the restoring or maintaining of a traditional room with eco-construction, or experimenting with “gasifiers” that ingeniously provide a cooking flame from natural material such as “caña” (Spanish bamboo). The maintenance of the “ram pump” is another task. It is an incredibly simple gravity pump, requiring no external energy to pump 500 litres of water per hour to a height of 40 metres day and night. Managing to survive in the unforgiving Almerían desert is achieved by using resources such as the ancient irrigation system from the Rio del Aguas dating back to Moorish time, the life blood of the village for centuries. Appropriate technologies, sound drylands management and savvy gardening play a fundamental part. Solar panels provide electricity and warm showers for everybody, whilst solar ovens support low impact cooking, and gasifiers allow cooking using a local fossil free energy source. A chemical free policy including compost toilets ensures that the use of precious water is reduced as much as possible. The gardens are an impressive example of how smart water usage and conscious gardening techniques in a challenging landscape can give impressive results. Oranges, pomegranates, carrots, pumpkins, aubergines, lettuces, cucumbers, radishes, tomatoes, peas and beetroot are produced. Olives, almonds, carob and other indigenous produce and

plants are used to their full potential. They do not claim to be 100% self sufficient, and are a healthy customer for the local economy. They provide impressive examples of how low impact living is achievable, here in Almería province.

Sunseed not only aims to educate people on more environmentally sound practices or methods for the planet, but also on the benefits for an individual of living in a simple community with others. Volunteers are asked to share rooms, cook and clean communally, share experiences and time, as well as be prepared to use compost toilets and eat a vegetarian diet. There is no TV, nor a fridge, and limited access to the internet. This may sound like some sort of ecological boot camp, but in reality these experiences can be potentially life changing for most people who spend time there. The results for volunteers are not only ecological based, but also personal. Visitors develop strong friendships, experience an international environment with different cultures, achieve new goals, as well as learn basic life skills. They can see the world with different eyes after spending some time there. It can be a holistic learning experience on many levels. If two weeks of simple living seems too much, every Tuesday, Sunseed opens its doors to visitors by giving free guided tours of their departments and welcoming guests to join them for dinner. Weekend courses are also on offer, on a wide range of topics. A visit to Sunseed has a lot to offer and share, not just for the planet but for individuals and the community of Almeria too. An Amazing Plan!

ere at the “Focus” magazine, we try to keep readers abreast of the latest progress, or lack of progress, regarding the “AVE” (high speed train) that in our case involves the link from Murcia to Almería. We gave an update as recently as last September, but there has been a dramatic idea put forward since. The “AVE” is rightly seen as of vital importance, not just for Almería, but Andalucía as well. It is by far the most expensive project ever, involving billions of euros, but with enormous benefits for this region, in both passenger and goods transport. In every stage of the “AVE” projects in Spain there have been twin tracks, with a third in some places for a separate goods track. The other bombshell relates to the planned Vera station. “El Gordo” and “El Niño”

F

or anyone who wants a chance to win a lottery, “El Gordo” or “La Lotería de Navidad” (Christmas Lottery) drawn on December 22nd is certainly the most popular one in Spain that offers amazing prizes. “El Gordo” has come to mean the whole lottery, but it is actually the name of the first prize only -“The Big One”. Punters get another chance to play on January 6th in a lottery, deceptively known as “El Niño” – “The Little One”, but with similar very large prizes.

“El Gordo” was first set up by King Carlos III in 1763 as a way of offering people a better lifestyle, so this year it has been going for 250 years! Millions play “El Gordo”, (it is almost part of Christmas), and it may be the only lottery some people buy a ticket for each year. This year the first prize in the slightly less popular “El Niño” has been increased to match the “Gordo” first prize, of 400,000 euros for a single winning 20 euro ticket. 160 people can win this amount from the total of 640 million euros, just for the first “El Gordo” prize, if all the tickets with that number on sale have been bought. There are a similar amount of 2nd prizes with 250,000 euros per winning ticket, followed by 3rd prizes of 50,000 euros, and two winning numbers for the 4th prizes of 20,000 euros each. 17,940 individual winning ticket numbers pay out 1,000 euros each, and then hordes of prizes for part winning numbers.

So in practice it works like this: you can buy a single ticket for 20 euros from a lottery office, or for 23 euros sold in bars, restaurants, shops and organizations such as clubs, who keep the 3 euros for themselves or towards their society. This single ticket comes off a sheet of 10, so is called “un décimo”, a “tenth” of the full sheet with the same ten numbers, like a sheet of stamps. A whole sheet then costs 200 euros from a lottery office, but there are 195 sheets of 10, all with the same number; this year from 00000 to 84999. Some big lottery offices in Madrid and Barcelona order the whole lot of a particular number, and often keep the same number each year, along with other amounts of different numbers. On December 22nd and January 6th the draw is held at the ‘Teatro Real’ in Madrid. Pupils of the San Ildefonso school (formerly reserved for orphans of public servants) draw the ”El Gordo” numbers and corresponding prizes, and sing the results aloud in front of a large audience. Until 1984 only boys from San Ildefonso participated in the draw, then Mónica Rodríguez became the first girl to sing the results, including a 4th prize of 25 million pesetas. It is a custom that the winners donate some of the money to the school, and often the boy or girl who sings out the largest prizes. The draw can take as long as 3 hours, with As the draw takes place, a single ball is ejected the children singing the results in shifts. from each of the revolving spheres at the same time. One child sings the winning number; the other child sings the corresponding prize. They weigh 3gms each and have a diameter of 19mm. Before being thrown into the globes, the entire set is shown to the public for anyone to check that the balls with their numbers are not missing.

The Late November Exodus

B

y November 23rd, Sir Ridley Scott, the film stars, and the hordes of production staff and technicians had left Almería province after the filming of “The Book of Exodus”. This is by far the most important film for a very long time in terms of the famous director and stars, and the extent of the various locations. An unscheduled weekend visit to this area by Prince Felipe, heir to the Spanish throne, along with Leticia his wife and their two daughters, was also an amazing boost. They went to the filming on their last day here and watched a battle.

The Diputacíon are prepared if necessary to transport the larger items to the film centres such as Mini Hollywood or Fort Bravo. They have also offered to keep them in storage until December next year when the film is released. Apart from the tourist attraction, they hope that the preserving of some of the sets would remind other film makers of the advantages of this area. Christian Bale who plays Moses in the “Exodus” film was invited to join this select group, but said “No thanks”, he couldn’t spare the time. He had hardly left his rented villa to intermingle with the local inhabitants, unlike the American actor Aaron Paul who spent time in restaurants, bars and sightseeing and said the area was wonderful. In a break with the “film star” idea, Ridley Scott was then sounded out about a plaque, and immediately said yes. He had already filmed here forty years ago. Almería Diputacíon, (the county council), wants to keep the film sets here. Normally they are dismantled, partly so that the general public or the press does not have a preview of the film locations that were heavily guarded during the filming. Some

‘Babieka Productions’ who organized the “extras casting” events for the film were heavily criticized for the lack of precise information and requirements and some chaotic selection processes. There was a harsh “You yes! You no!” for hopefuls who had queued for hours, or even overnight. A young man called Antonio, promised a part in El Ejido, was told to keep slim and grow a beard. He turned down another film extra job in Seville paying less money. He contacted the casting company by email and ‘phone four times when the filming was scheduled. He was always told on the ‘phone to send another email. He never got any reply, along with four other “chosen” people he knew! He eventually shaved off his beard in disgust.

Angels Two men were in the pub on Christmas Eve, talking about their families. Bert said, “My wife is an angel”. ...and next... The Lecture On New Year's Eve, Roger was in no shape to drive, so he sensibly left his van in the car park and walked home. As he was wobbling along, he was stopped by a policeman. 'What are you doing out here at four o'clock in the morning?' asked the police officer. 'I'm on my way to a lecture,' answered Roger. 'And who on earth, in their right mind, is going to give a lecture at this time on New Year's Eve?' enquired the constable sarcastically. 'My wife,' slurred Roger sadly. The Strange Christmas Scene In a small southern town in Texas there was a nativity scene that showed great skill and talent had gone into creating it. One small feature stood out. The three wise men were wearing firemen’s helmets. Totally unable to come up with a reason or explanation, a visitor decided to ask a local what it meant. At a shop on the edge of town, he asked the lady behind the counter about the helmets.
